Discipline's Goal!
Lack of discipline (whether we are referring to that which is self-practiced or what is received at the hand of others) leads to chaos and disorder in individual lives and in the world. Good parents lovingly discipline their children to direct their lives toward becoming good people who will be able to make a positive contribution to society. As they see best, these parents strive to instill characteristics of courtesy and consideration for others, dependability, good work ethics, honesty, the ability to discern right from wrong, etc. This is an important aspect of parenting that helps children move from functioning well in the family unit to functioning well in society at large.
Noting the provision of our loving Heavenly Father, the Hebrew writer wrote…
“(7) It is for discipline that you have to endure. GOD IS TREATING YOU AS SONS. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? (8) If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. (9) Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more BE SUBJECT TO THE FATHER OF SPIRITS AND LIVE? (10) For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but HE DISCIPLINES US FOR OUR GOOD, THAT WE MAY SHARE HIS HOLINESS.” ( Hebrews 12:7-10 ESV)
God has an even higher goal in mind for us. His discipline and redirection of our lives is for the purpose of ultimately sharing HIS HOLINESS. Holiness is not automatic, but is rather instilled and developed in our walk with God. As we hang in there through life’s challenges, remaining steadfast and faithful to His Will, His own HOLY ESSENCE becomes more and more visible in our life. This goal of HOLINESS should be important to us because without HOLINESS we will not be able to see the Lord. ( Hebrews 12:14) May we continue to be submissive to His direction so that HIS HOLINESS will become a part of our essence.
Have a great day APPRECIATING GOD’S CORRECTION AS HIS CHILD!
