Art Of Learning!
When in college, I can remember at the beginning of each term looking at the stack of books I was going to have to read for each of the courses I signed up to take. It seemed to be an overwhelming sight. I remember one of those books being almost three inches thick. However, as I focused on the breakdown of the material week by week, though there was still much to read, it was not quite so intimidating. Even now, as I begin each week and consider the lessons I need to prepare for classes and preaching, I can feel overwhelmed until I consider the daily increments in which it will get done. For several years I have set up a daily list on my desk calendar to plan out how much reading and meditation will be done for each of the lessons I am preparing. This serves a two-fold purpose. One is to help me see whether or not I am remaining on target through the week. The other is so that I have plotted out my study time in daily segments that allow me to meditate on and absorb what I am studying rather than finding myself drowning in information.
There is much we may recognize we don’t know and want to learn. That acknowledgement alone has cause some to not even want to begin. However, when we consider the way we best learn, we can still approach our gaining of knowledge in an eager and encouraging way.
Note a statement recorded by Isaiah.
“For it is PRECEPT UPON PRECEPT, PRECEPT UPON PRECEPT, LINE UPON LINE, LINE UPON LINE, HERE A LITTLE, THERE A LITTLE.” (Isaiah 28:10 ESV)
It is possible that verse nine begins a taunt by some who felt the prophet’s message was not very grand or did not amount to much. Were they to be treated and taught like children? Sometimes the simplest and most beautiful truths are missed by those who think they are so smart and well educated. Perhaps these individuals are like those Paul stated are “always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 3:7 ESV) Though the principle mentioned in verse ten may not have been stated in a positive manner, our way of picking up the wonderful life changing truths of God’s Word is still GRADUALLY precept by precept, line by line, here a little and there a little -- all ADDING UP to instruction that furthers the maturing process. It is the way these were going to be taught! (Isaiah 28:13) Are we open to it?
May we recognize how every bit of truth we glean from God should be considered a big thing for our life. As children of God we are to be CONSTANTLY GROWING “in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18 ESV) Let us allow that grace and knowledge to continue being GRADUALLY, but STEADILY drawn into our minds and translated into our actions.
Have a great day EAGERLY LEARNING AND PRACTICING GOD’S WILL!

Life In Perspective!
Sometimes what we need is not so much for our circumstances to change, but for our perspective to be brought into better focus. Perhaps that is why Paul -- though he endured a wide variety of situations -- was still able to keep on rejoicing. In 2 Corinthians 11, Paul reluctantly listed many things he had endured, including a great concern for others. (2 Corinthians 11:23-29) Some of the things he went through were very severe and yet he would refer to his afflictions as “slight momentary” things compared to what he knew was in store for him. (2 Corinthians 4:16)
It was in this same letter that Paul would declare…
“I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. IN ALL OUR AFFLICTION, I AM OVERFLOWING WITH JOY.” (2 Corinthians 7:4 ESV)
Wow! In spite of the sufferings and trials of Paul’s life, he possessed overflowing joy. Though some might focus on how bad Paul had it, he seems to have kept his focus on HOW GOOD HE HAD IT! He knew the great assurance he had in Christ and maintained a grateful spirit for the salvation and hope that were his. In comparison with others, he was well supplied. (Philippians 4:18)
Perhaps the following that appeared some time ago in a church bulletin will help us with our perspective.
SOMEWHERE…
…a mother is trying to make up her mind whether to let a surgeon perform an operation on her only child that may take his life.
…a man whose son didn’t come home last night is walking through a door marked “City Morgue.”
…a wife whose marriage is “on the rocks” is at a party flirting with the man she knows will destroy her fidelity.
…a man is sitting in his bedroom toying with a pistol while his wife is yelling at him from the bottom of the stairs to come down and explain his recent whereabouts.
…a young woman is being wheeled into the delivery room from which she knows that mother or child, but not both mother and child, will be wheeled out.
…a tired doctor is shaking his head and says, “terminal cancer.”
…AND a “contented Christian” is lying in his warm bed, yawning and decides against attending the worship assembly this Sunday morning, because (after all) he doesn’t really have anything to be thankful for.
[original author unknown]
What does that do to our perspective regarding our own life? Can we, like Paul, say that in spite of life’s challenges we are still “overflowing with joy”? Let us not lose sight of how GOOD WE HAVE IT living a life in Christ because we have a hope that according to Romans 5:5 will not put us to shame (ESV) or disappoint us. (NKJV) May that remain key to our life perspective.
Have a great day SINCERELY ACKNOWLEDGING HOW BLESSED WE ARE!

Sweet Fulfillment!
“I love it when a plan comes together.” How sweet those words are to those who witness the DESIRED RESULTS of their planning and labor. Have we rejoiced over it happening? Have we experienced the joy? Though all our DESIRES may not be fulfilled, it is a great encouragement when they are.
Solomon stated…
“A DESIRE FULFILLED IS SWEET TO THE SOUL, but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools.” (Proverbs 13:19 ESV)
Oh, how sweet it is! Oh, how encouraging! Oh, how wonderful to know the effort was worthwhile. Oh, how sweet the satisfaction experienced deep within the soul when plans come together!
We may have many plans rolling around in our minds, but it is ultimately the purposes of God that will stand (Proverbs 19:21) and what He wills is perfect and most beneficial. Oh, what rejoicing fills heaven each time HIS DESIRED results come together, especially with regard to the salvation of souls. (note John 15:7 & 10) This is God’s ultimate DESIRE and the reason for His present patience. (2 Peter 3:9). Through Christ -- the only means of salvation (Acts 4:12) and access to the Father (John 14:6) -- God set into motion the adequate means for bringing His plan together! May we retain a DESIRE to labor with Him as He continues to bring it to fulfillment one soul at a time.
Have a great day EXPERIENCING PLEASANT PARTICIPATION IN GOD’S PLAN!

Sweets!
It seems that most of the focuses recently have been fairly long, though I hope time was taken to read and reflect on the passages focused on and some benefit was found. Today I decided to try to keep it short and sweet, and pray it will encourage your focus through the day.
About four years ago as I began a deliberate attempt to lose some weight (and as of last June have kept it off for three years) I found that not only did I need to increase exercise, but had to also change the way I was eating. Among many things I have come to understand is how eating sweets can trick the body into WANTING MORE sweets and it therefore becomes easy to overindulge.
Though sweets may need to be approached in moderation with regard to physical health, praise God He has provided something sweet that is perfectly healthy to INDULGE in again and again.
From the Psalms we read…
“HOW SWEET ARE YOUR WORDS TO MY TASTE, SWEETER THAN HONEY TO MY MOUTH!” (Psalm 119:103 ESV)
A bowl of sweet treats within arm’s reach -- though taken one at a time and popped into the mouth -- can easily be consumed before one realizes it. Since I have experienced this personally there have been times I have purposely moved a bowl away from where I sat in order to keep this from happening. However, what a wonderful thing for us to keep God’s Word close at hand, providing the opportunity to continually be popping one verse or passage at a time into our minds. It’s all good! It’s all healthy! We can’t take in too much of it! Let us continually INDULGE and enjoy the sweetness that keeps us COMING BACK FOR MORE. May we develop a real sweet tooth for God’s sweet truth!
Have a great day CONTINUALLY REACHING FOR GOD’S WORD!

"Well, Well, Well!"
When someone has sighed, “Well, well, well”, sometimes they are responded to by another saying, “That’s a deep subject for a shallow mind.” Well, some wells truly are deep. Drilling must go down to whatever depth the water table or underground spring might be. When the fresh water source is found, the landowner rejoices as they look forward to the refreshment they will have for years to come. However, not all wells are alike. The farm on which my wife grew up had its own well and the water was very good. A drink from that well was truly something to look forward to enjoying. It was REFRESHING and SATISFYING. It did not disappoint. I have also taken a drink from wells that had a lot of minerals and I really had to be thirsty to even consider drinking it. I suppose in time I could get used to drinking such water, but I know where I would rather drink.
Recently reading in Isaiah, I was struck by the following:
“(1) You will say in that day: ‘I will give thanks to you, O LORD, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. (2) Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.’ (3) WITH JOY YOU WILL DRAW WATER FROM THE WELLS OF SALVATION.” (Isaiah 12:1-3 ESV)
The context here seems to be with regard to the hope of the remnant who would return from captivity in Assyria. (Isaiah 11:16) These would be saved and be able to return to the land God had given them. How REFRESHING this hope must have been. It would not just be deliverance from God’s earlier anger and the period of captivity, but would also be a time of prospering. They would be drawing blessings from God’s deep gracious well and find REFRESHMENT and SATISFACTION in His provision.
Are we also encouraged by the reality of God’s abundant provision from which we can draw in our relationship to Him through Christ? God has a well able to provide that which is adequate for all who are willing to come to draw and drink. When Jesus talked with the woman at Jacob’s well near Sychar in Samaria, He got her attention when He spoke of “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” of which those who drank would never be thirsty. (John 4:14) She wanted that water. When she realized Who was speaking to her, she forgot about the physical water she had come to draw, even leaving her water jar (John 4:28) as she ran back into the city to tells others.
Let us not turn to the wells of this world. They will ultimately leave us thirsting again. It is from God’s well that we can taste and know that the Lord is good. (1 Peter 2:3) May we remain drawing from the REFRESHING AND SATISFYING provision which continually flows from Him.
Have a great day WITH A CONTINUAL THIRST FOR GOD’S WELL!

Doing Our Thing! (part 6 of 6)
We already noted Jesus doing “His thing”; the Father’s Will. “Jesus’ thing” was also to be submissive to allowing the “Scripture’s thing” to be carried out in His life. As Jesus was being arrested, He made this clear to Peter as well as to the crowd who had come to arrest Him.
Directed to Peter we read…
“(52) Then Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. (53) Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? (54) BUT HOW THEN SHOULD THE SCRIPTURES BE FULFILLED, THAT IT MUST BE SO?’” (Matthew 26:52-54 ESV)
Jesus could have allowed the sword, but He told Peter to put it away. This was not the time and place for the sword. Jesus did not resist force with force nor use the sword to overthrow earthly kingdoms. This was not the way His eternal kingdom would be established. It would be established by the power of truth -- the “sword of the Spirit” -- as we noted yesterday.
Jesus could have also called upon an army of angels. A legion equaled a Roman army of 6,000 men. Twelve legions of angels could have meant a legion for each of the disciples (the remaining faithful eleven) and a legion for Himself. That would have been quite the battle force since there were times all God needed was to send one angel to do His work. (i.e. 2 Chronicles 32:21)
Nevertheless, neither the sword nor an angelic host would be mustered because Jesus submitted to the plan that SCRIPTURE had already pointed toward. He was willing that it be FULFILLED in and through Him. What SCRIPTURE declared, “it must be so”!
Directed to the crowd we read…
“(55) At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, ‘Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. (56) BUT ALL THIS HAS TAKEN PLACE THAT THE SCRIPTURES OF THE PROPHETS MIGHT BE FULFILLED.’ Then all the disciples left him and fled.” (Matthew 26:55-56 ESV)
These wicked men, though acting in ignorance, were in fact FULFILLING the eternal purpose of God. What the prophets had written was being FULFILLED in every detail! What we must understand is whether we obey God or not, what He has revealed will be carried out. Therefore we must consider what our relationship to the SCRIPTURES is going to be!
Jesus is the supreme example of unwavering devotion to what the SCRIPTURES declare. He came as the Word in the flesh. (John 1:1-2, 14), being the very embodiment of the Truth of God. (John 14:6) As Jesus’ ministry was about to begin, He responded three times to the devil’s attempts to tempt Him with the truth based on “It is written…”! (Matthew 4:4,7, &10) During His ministry He was the Truth, taught the truth, and held to the Father’s timings. Even in the face of death, Jesus would allow the SCRIPTURES to be FULLFILLED. (Isaiah 53:1-12) Jesus surrendered to what SCRIPTURE prophesied, allowing it to stand and be FULFILLED in every respect. He would do the “SCRIPTURE’S thing.” The “Father’s thing” being “His thing” would be the FULFILLED thing!
What about our own life? How willing are we to do the “SCRIPTURE’S thing”? Are we willing that SCRIPTURE be FULFILLED in and through us? Are we willing to be a wise builder by hearing our Lord’s words and putting them into practice? (Matthew 7:24-25) It is only though making “God’s thing” “our thing” that we will be able to keep our life on track. Let us not allow anything to move us away from the SCRIPTURES! Instead let us continue to surrender to the truth of God, allowing every thought to be taken captive to obey Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5) It is by submission, not resistance, that we will gain the victory in our life. May our life remain properly connected to the unfolding of God’s eternal purposes.
Have a great day ABIDING IN GOD’S ETERNAL TRUTH!

Doing Our Thing! (part 5 of 6)
As those sent by the chief priests and elders of the people were beginning to do “their thing”, the next player in the events of our text jumped into action to do “his thing”. Peter loved His Lord. He had previously stated an unwavering devotion to Him. (Matthew 26:33) Here Peter was ready to demonstrate it as he reacted to the situation at hand.
We read…
“And behold, one of those [PETER (John 18:10)] who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and DREW HIS SWORD and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.” (Matthew 26:45-51 ESV)
Though Matthew did not name Peter, John did (John 18:10), even naming the servant of the high priest. I wish we had some insight into what became of Malchus’ life? Jesus touched his ear and healed it (Luke 22:51) and I wonder if Jesus restored a perfect ear or if perhaps there remained a scar to remind Malchus of this merciful act even as Jesus was being arrested. But getting back to our focus on Peter, here he was doing “his thing”, being his impetuous self. Perhaps we love Peter so much because we can relate to how he sometimes acted first and thought later. Nevertheless, here he was ready to fight, though apparently a better fisherman than a swordsman.
Maybe what we should learn from “Peter’s thing” on this occasion is how we need to be so careful of just reacting to situations. We can all probably think of more times than we wish to recount when we have reacted only to soon realize it wasn’t the smart thing to do. We need to be ACTIVE and even PROACTIVE, but very cautious about being reactive. Though we may be motivated by a good heart (as I believe Peter was), it is still far too easy to launch ourselves into doing the wrong thing. When Jesus told Peter to put his sword away, He stated that those “who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52 ESV) This was not the way Jesus’ kingdom would be established or advanced.
We also need to exercise caution in being on the defensive too quickly when in dialogue with others. Certainly we should stand firm in the truth, but if we’re too quick to react when others use terminology that may not be necessarily Biblical, a little patience in listening might clarify things and lead us into more beneficial discussion with them. Let us not be quick to use the “sword of the Spirit” (God’s Word, Ephesians 6:17) to slice and dice, but rather to gently cut away the false notions from the truth by directing the focus to that which God has clearly revealed through the Scriptures. Remembering how long it has taken us to see some things more clearly ourselves should lead us to being kind and patient with others. For those who will allow it, God’s Word will accomplish His purpose and succeed in that for which He has sent it. (Isaiah 55:11) May we be ACTIVE in taking up the “sword of the Spirit”, living by it, and patiently sharing its truth with others.
Have a great day ADVANCING THE KINGDOM WITH THE RIGHT SWORD!

Doing Our Thing! (part 4 of 6)
Once Judas did “his thing” of identifying Jesus, the soldiers and an armed mob stepped forward to do “their thing”.
We read…
“(47) While he [Jesus] was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him A GREAT CROWD WITH SWORDS AND CLUBS, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. (48) Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, ‘The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.’ (49) And he came up to Jesus at once and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ And he kissed him. (50) Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, do what you came to do.’ Then THEY came up and LAID HANDS ON JESUS AND SEIZED HIM.” (Matthew 26:47-50 ESV)
Here were those sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. It seems to have been quite an entourage for the purpose of arresting just one man; coming armed as if they were arresting a violent criminal. It was a great show of force. However, it was also an act of cowardice because there had been plenty of opportunities within the city and in the temple to take Jesus as He taught in broad daylight. Nevertheless, here they were, doing “their thing” in the middle of the night “by stealth” (Matthew 26:3-5 ESV) away from the sight of the people who began to see Jesus as a prophet and perhaps the long awaited Messiah.
Now one might say that these sent to arrest Jesus were simply following orders. Perhaps the lesson for us is to be careful whose orders we allow ourselves to come under. Whose COMMAND and INFLUENCE have we placed our life beneath? Since even “religious leaders” can lead astray, what is the ULTIMATE AUTHORITY for our life?
When Peter and the other apostles were given ORDERS by the Jewish leadership, note how they responded.
“But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘WE MUST OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN.’” (Acts 5:29 ESV)
May it be the RULE OF GOD to which we continue to submit our lives. His “COMMANDMENTS are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3 ESV) because they help us to overcome the influences of this world. God’s INFLUENCE will not lead us astray, but will always lead us in the way of righteousness. Let it be GOD’S AUTHORITY by which we march through life seizing the opportunities to do “His thing”.
Have a great day KNOWING GOD’S COMMANDS ARE ALWAYS GOOD!

Doing Our Thing! (part 3 of 6)
While Jesus was doing “His thing” by doing “God’s thing”, Judas was carrying out “his thing.” He earlier made a deal and had been waiting for an opportune time to carry out his plan. (Matthew 26:14-16) Unfortunately for Judas, the appeal of money (John 12:4-6) was stronger than his faithfulness to the One with Whom he had walked.
Again, focusing on the text, we read…
“(47) While he [Jesus] was still speaking, JUDAS came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. (48) Now THE BETRAYER HAD GIVEN THEM A SIGN, saying, ‘THE ONE I WILL KISS is the man; seize him.’ (49) And he came up to Jesus at once and said, ‘GREETINGS, RABBI!’ AND HE KISSED HIM. (50) Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, do what you came to do.’ Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.” (Matthew 26:47-50)
Oh, what DECEPTION Judas thought he could hide behind. He called Jesus, “Rabbi”, the same word he had used earlier when the others said “Lord.” (Matthew 26:22 & 25). However, Judas had not learned from the Teacher as he ought or he would have acknowledged the Lordship of Jesus and not turned against Him. I find it interesting that Jesus, in turn, referred to Judas as “friend.” (The Greek points to the designation of a companion, which Judas had been.) Perhaps Jesus’ was reminding Judas of what he had been and could still be; a friend and companion. Such a response had the potential to impact Judas’ focus (if he were touchable) the same way it must have struck Peter later in the courtyard when his eyes met with the Lord’s following his three denials. (Luke 22:61)
Then there was “the kiss”; the sign of the one to be seized. What audacity for Judas to have employed -- in an act of treachery -- that which was the common greeting among friends, masters, and pupils. Perhaps the DECEPTION here was to keep the other disciples from knowing what he was really up to. What great deception to use a sign of affection and respect for such an act of treason.
Solomon noted…
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.” (Proverbs 27:6 ESV)
Solomon knew something about this. Such action was not new with Judas. We can put up with the wounds of a true friend when they sometimes tell us a truth that hurts a little bit because we know they have our best interests at heart. However, the kiss of an enemy is an entirely different thing. The cunning! The craftiness! The MASKED DECEPTION! How awful it is! Yet, that was what Jesus experienced as Judas, one of His own, did “his thing.”
What is the true connection between what goes on within us and what is visible without? Do our actions and words MASK something different than what we are representing? Are we guilty of such hypocrisy? Or is “our thing” that of seeking to develop and live with true GODLY CHARACTER that allows its TRUE FACE TO SHINE forth in our actions and words springing from a heart of devotion to the Lord and His Will? May the Lordship of Jesus sufficiently touch us so that all aspects of our life truly acknowledge Him as such.
Have a great day REMAINING A GENUINE DISCIPLE AND FRIEND OF JESUS!

Doing Our Thing! (part 2 of 6)
As things were unfolding toward Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, He continued doing “His thing.” While He had been praying in the garden, the chief priests and elders of the people gathered and sent an armed band to arrest Him in the dark of night. Just as Jesus was finishing praying for the third time (Matthew 26:44), perhaps the sound of feet on a mission began to gradually dispel the quiet of the garden, followed by the glare of torches and lanterns coming into view, and then the louder clank of swords as the armed crowd approached. Judas led the group to this retreating place of Jesus. However, Jesus would NOT RETREAT!
We read…
“(45) Then HE [JESUS] came to the disciples and said to them, ‘Sleep and take your rest later on. See, THE HOUR IS AT HAND, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (46) RISE, LET US BE GOING; see my betrayer is at hand.’” (Matthew 26:45-46 ESV)
Jesus did not hide in the garden. Nor did He hide behind His disciples. He would not slip away from the crowd as at other times. (i.e. John 10:39) Jesus was READY! Jesus was WILLING! Though He knew full well what would happen to Him (John 18:4), He stepped forward, SUBMITTING to what was to be! Jesus is our supreme example of the SURRENDERED LIFE! Though He had just anguished in prayer (Luke 22:44), there was no hesitation at this point. Earlier, throughout His ministry, He had understood when the time had not yet come (i.e. John 2:4; 7:6, 8, & 30; 8:20), but now was the time for Him to say, “the hour is at hand” and SURRENDER to the hour. In the garden He had prayed, “not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39 ESV), completely WILLING to fully SURRENDER His Will to that of the Father’s. That is to be the picture of our life; SURRENDERED to the Sovereign Will of God. It is the way in which “God’s thing” becomes “our thing” and so our life is brought into harmony with Him.
Let us bear in mind that it is “God’s thing” that will ultimately be done! (Proverbs 19:21) Ultimately it is God’s plan that is going to come together. Ultimately it is His Will that shall prevail. The decision we need to make, therefore, is to strive to live in harmony with His Desires, Plans, Purposes, and Will so that we can be a part of what He will ultimately bring together. Like our Lord, may we allow the “Father’s thing” to be ours as we live out each day He brings.
Have a great day WILLINGLY STEPPING FORWARD IN THE WILL OF GOD!

Doing Our Thing! (part 1 of 6)
During the 1960’s, one of the philosophies some wanted their lives to be governed by was, “I just want to do my own thing!” Perhaps there a lot of ideologies that the era of the 60’s is blamed for introducing that were really not new at all, nor are they nonexistent today. We live in a world where many still want to be left alone to do “their own thing.” The problem is that “my thing” and “your thing” many times conflict and collide. There must be some “OTHER THING” that needs to be focused on because it is very possible for “my thing” and “your thing” to both be in conflict with that which is right.
Over the next few days I invite you to focus with me on the arrest of Jesus after His time of prayer in the garden. The complete text we will be considering is Matthew 26:45-56, but note the first portion of these verses below that introduces several of the key players.
“(45) Then HE [JESUS] came to the disciples and said to them, ‘Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (46) Rise, let us be going; see my betrayer is at hand.’ (47) While he was still speaking, JUDAS came, one of the twelve, and with him A GREAT CROWD WITH SWORDS AND CLUBS, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. (48) Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, ‘The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.’ (49) And he came up to Jesus at once and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ And he kissed him. (50) Jesus said to him, ‘Friend, do what you came to do.’ Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. (51) And behold, ONE OF THOSE [PETER (John 18:10)] WHO WERE WITH JESUS stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.” (Matthew 26:45-51 ESV)
Notice the various key players: Jesus, Judas, the soldiers and armed mob sent by the Jewish leaders, and Peter. Each of these were doing different things based on varying EXPECTATIONS, DESIRES, AND PERCEPTIONS of the situation. Where might we have found ourselves had we been on the scene? What would have been the basis of our role? Something important for us each to bear in mind is that whatever “our thing” is reflects something about our character and the view we have of our relationship to God.
Over the next few days the focus will begin with Jesus and end with Jesus (a very proper approach for all things relating to our life), with the consideration of the other key players in between. What I hope we can note together is the manifestation of “their thing” and what better PERSPECTIVE we can gain for our own lives in the process. Even bad examples can teach us something than can make us better children and servants of God. May we be open to the lessons we need.
Have a great day BEING A RIGHT PLAYER IN THE SCENES OF LIFE!

Serious Competitor!
There are activities we participate in that are only side focuses. Interests such as crafts, music, painting, photography, sports, woodworking, etc., may occupy a little time in our lives. However, for some such activities may become the focal point of their life. One of the things that has amazed me when listening to interviews of athletes who have trained for the Olympics is how much of their life had become DEVOTED TO THE GOAL! Young figure skaters have talked of the hours and hours spent on the ice beginning in the early hours of the morning and then again late at night. Years of exercising self-control and a strict regimen in preparation for the competition is an obvious sign of taking it all very seriously. It’s as if the skating had BECOME THEIR LIFE, only squeezing in school studies, eating and sleeping, and other activities whenever possible. The skating becomes the ALL CONSUMING thing with the goal of “Olympic Gold” in mind.
Writing to the church at Corinth Paul exhorted…
“(24) Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? SO RUN THAT YOU MAY OBTAIN IT. (25) Every athlete exercises SELF-CONTROL IN ALL THINGS. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. (26) So I DO NOT RUN AIMLESSLY; I do not box as one beating the air. (27) But I DISCIPLINE MY BODY AND KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ESV)
Living for God was not a side focus, but rather the ALL CONSUMING thing for Paul. He may have been a tentmaker (Acts 18:1-4) on the side from time to time, but living for Christ and sharing Christ had become his life. It was Paul’s reason for existing and he pressed on with the aim of receiving the imperishable victor’s crown. All Paul did revealed his DEVOTION TO THE GOAL and as He shared God’s rules for life with others, he was intent on following God’s Will so as to not be disqualified himself . May we also remain focused on running life’s race according to God’s rule in our hearts with a focus fixed on the goal of eternal life.
Have a great day STAYING IN THE RACE!

I have a great appreciation for those with the ability to draw and paint because it is far from one of my talents. About the only thing I can draw is a conclusion. To me it is marvelous how real and life-like some are able to make a work of art. Maybe part of my problem is I lack the patience an artist needs. I have watched my oldest and youngest sons draw, erase, draw, erase, draw, erase, etc. My personal opinion was that each stroke and line looked great, but they had the desire for just the right shape and shading to capture what they had in mind.
Michelangelo has been described as having been obsessed with perfection. Upon completion of one of his greatest works, “Moses”, he stood back and gazed upon the image he had sculpted. Then, suddenly, he lashed out at the figure in anger, struck the masterpiece on the knee and shouted, “Why don’t you speak?” He was not satisfied! He wanted the image to be better! He wanted it to come alive! And that chisel scar remains today on the statue’s knee -- a reminder of Michelangelo’s obsession with excellence.
Now we can go nuts and put ourselves under undue pressure by an obsession with perfection. We could find ourselves responding to all we do with anger and frustration. However, to have a SUPREME GOAL in mind and CONTINUE TO WORK TOWARD IT is still the type of focus we need. This is especially true with regard to spiritual growth. Without this focus it is too easy to soon find ourselves complacent with where we are.
It is EXCELLENCY for which we need to continue striving. Even though Paul was very complimentary to the church at Thessalonica, notice the encouragement he still gave.
“Finally, then, brothers, we ASK and URGE you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, that you DO SO MORE AND MORE.” (1 Thessalonians 4:1 ESV)
Paul encouraged the Corinthian brethren to “AIM FOR RESTORATION” (2 Corinthians 13:11) and Jesus established the goal with these words: “You therefore must BE PERFECT, AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT.” (Matthew 5:48 ESV)
It is through keeping the UTMOST STANDARD in mind we will be able to CONTINUE TOWARD EXCELLENCE. Someday in Christ it will all be brought to completion as Paul said,
“Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, THAT WE MAY PRESENT EVERYONE MATURE IN CHRIST.” (Colossians 1:28 ESV)
In all of this the goal is toward PROGRESSING FURTHER AND FURTHER into what God desires us to be. May we keep our eyes on the goal and our life open to the transformation He can bring about.
Have a great day EMPOWERED BY GOD TO EXCEL!

Intense Action!
Hurry up and wait! Do we ever feel that way? We rush along only to ultimately find ourselves having to wait? Some things cannot be rushed. There are many things beyond our control and we must learn to relax and wait. Perhaps we struggle with wanting to be active rather than passive in dealing with life and sitting and waiting is just too much inactivity. Maybe the real challenge is that PATIENCE is actually more activity that what we care to be involved in. Someone has stated that “Patience is not passive: on the contrary it is active; it is concentrated strength.” [source unknown] Sometimes PATIENCE takes all we’ve got! For some waiting becomes so intense they can’t stand it. It does take “concentrated strength” to wait upon that which cannot be hurried.
James encouraged…
“(7) BE PATIENT, therefore, brothers, UNTIL THE COMING OF THE LORD. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. (8) You also, BE PATIENT. ESTABLISH YOUR HEARTS, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:7-8 ESV)
Exercise is action. Exercising PATIENCE can be very intense. Like the farmer who has no control over the climate and weather, so we do not have control over the atmosphere of society and the world around us. However, the Lord is coming again. There are things that will be dealt with in their time. We must therefore continue to concentrate our strength on keeping our HEARTS ESTABLISHED in trust and obedience to our Lord. As the farmer’s seed is established in the earth with the anticipation of a fruitful harvest, so God’s Word and His faithful promises must be ESTABLISHED within our HEART with great anticipation of all God has in store for us. Also, like the farmer, though we may feel ourselves going through various seasons of life, the Creator of the seasons is the constant sustainer of life. With a HEART of faith firmly ESTABLISHED in God we can trust it all to work out according to His timetable. May we maintain a concentrated effort in waiting on His working all things out. He can do it.
Have a great day EXERCISING THE STRENGTH OF WAITING!

Resistance And Submission!
When it comes to resisting and submitting, some people get it backwards. What I mean is, their life is not properly ARRANGED and so they end up resisting what they should submit to and submitting to what they should resist. When Stephen was being opposed as he proclaimed salvation in Christ, he declared…
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, YOU ALWAYS RESIST THE HOLY SPIRIT. As your fathers did, so do you.” (Acts 7:51 ESV)
Rather than submitting to the will of God, these continued in a track record of resistance, rejecting the long awaited Messiah by having betrayed and murdered Him. (Acts 7:52) Though they believed their lives were aligned with God, they were actually like those Jesus stated were of their father the devil, because they were carrying out his will rather than God’s. (John 8:44)
James urged…
“(7) SUBMIT YOURSELVES therefore to GOD. RESIST THE DEVIL, and he will flee from you. (8) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ” (James 4:7-8 ESV)
Who our life is ARRANGED against and under is extremely important. The word translated “submit” comes from the Greek “hupotasso” and is a military term meaning “to rank under” (“hupo”, under, and “tasso” TO ARRANGE) [source: “Expository Dict. Of N. T. Words”, by W. E. Vine] The word implies being in subjection or submission to. James used this word in the imperative. SUBMISSION TO GOD is a must! It is of paramount significance for victory in our life. The word “resist” comes from the Greek “anthistemi”, meaning “to set against (“anti” against, and “histemi” to cause to stand). It is akin to the Greek word “antitasso” with “anti” again being “against” and “tasso” meaning TO ARRANGE, originally being a military term for ARRANGING in battle against a foe. [source: W. E. Vine] James also used this word in the imperative.
There is a battle going on and we best be sure our life is ARRANGED under the right leadership. Are we continuing to keep our life ranked under God? If so, we are to remain submissive to His orders as we take our stand against the devil. In the process, James stated we are drawn closer to God while the devil flees from us. To get the submission and resistance backwards would cause us to be separated from God. May we remain diligent in maintaining a life that is ARRANGED against the devil, but under the sovereign rule of God.
Have a great day MAINTAINING LIFE IN RIGHTEOUS ORDER!

The Greatest Fete On Earth?
Circuses. Acts of various kinds. High-wire acts, trapeze artists, clowns, lion tamers, etc.; all promoted as "The Greatest Show On Earth!" The crowds come. They pay their money to get entertained and wowed. There are ooh's and ah's as one grand act follows another. The audience stands amazed at daring human ability along with the control of even the largest beasts (elephants and horses), the wildest creatures (lions and tigers), and the most deadly (poisonous snakes). However, there is a greater fete that we should be eager to witness and be a part of because it is more needful in this life.
James stated.
"(7) For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, (8) BUT NO HUMAN BEING CAN TAME THE TONGUE. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison." (James 3:7-8 ESV)
Perhaps one of the reasons life at times becomes a "circus" is because of this failure on the part of mankind. It seems there has continued to be better success at taming the creatures of this world than the taming of THE BEAST that resides within the mouth. Don't we know the struggle ourselves? Have we not each experienced the difficulty of holding THE TONGUE back; keeping it under control? Some use THE TONGUE to bless God while they curse men (James 3:9) and still others use THE TONGUE to curse both. As James admonished, "My brothers, these things ought not to be so." (James 3:10 ESV)
In all our battles for self-control, this is an important one. Even though we may have the other uses of our body aligned with God's intended purposes, if we do not TAME THE TONGUE, James stated we are "staining the whole body." (James 3:6 ESV)
What is the key to tightening the reins of THE TONGUE? James stated it in the first chapter when he urged his readers to be "quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger." (James 1:19 ESV) With two ears and one TONGUE, deciding to do twice as much listening as speaking may aid in keeping THE BEAST under control. Tamed, THE TONGUE can be as meek (gentle) as the wild stallion brought under control, which incidentally is the background usage of the word "meek". Let us make the matter of THE TONGUE a focus of daily prayer in seeking God's help in bringing it under control so that OUR TONGUE may keep us out of trouble and become a tool of blessing to those around us. It just may wow them.
Have a great day COURAGEOUSLY CAGING THE CHATTER!

Once Upon The Lips!
Dieting women have sometimes quipped, “Once on the lips, forever on the hips.” The idea behind this statement is that what goes into the mouth (amount and types of food) will ultimately SHAPE the body. Though taking good care of our body is important, we must also never underestimate the importance of considering what goes ONCE FROM THE LIPS can SHAPE THE LIVES of others for years to come in either negative or positive ways.
The story has been told of seven-year-old Marta who began to cook dinner for her family of four. It was the early 1900’s. Her mother had become seriously ill and Marta was considered to be the natural choice. She had a younger sister, Gracey, who wasn’t fond of domestic tasks. She would rather read or do puzzles. Gracey’s parents believed her to be intelligent and weren’t stern with her regarding her chores. Therefore, Marta being very adept at tackling household tasks, carried the weight. Marta was creative, a good artist -- and she was also very bright. However, when it came time for the girls (who were close in age) to go to college, their parents saw fit for Gracey to attend, but not Marta. She was heartbroken. Her father said to her, “Well, you’re not as smart as Gracey. But don’t worry, you’re a good cook.” Marta is now 90. She has lived a full and exciting life. She’s an avid reader and has an amazing mind. Eighty years later, she still talks about those words from her father. She still believes she’s not very smart. [source: bulletin clipping (phrasing edited some)]
A statement ONCE FROM THE LIPS of Marta’s father had a lifelong impact on her life. There is POWER IN WORDS that can create more of a weight than the adding up of calories from food eaten. Such can take a drastic toll on a life in emotional, physical, and spiritual ways. Excess calories eaten may be burned off easier than reversing the damage of SEARING WORDS spoken without consideration of their impact.
Solomon noted…
“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but THE TONGUE OF THE WISE BRINGS HEALING.” (Proverbs 12:18 ESV)
Words, like a thrusting sword, can cut, maim, sever, and ultimately kill desire, enthusiasm, and the will to press on. On the other hand, there is beneficial healing that can be brought about with the wise use of the tongue. It is wise to give careful consideration to what we say and how we say it.
Solomon also encouraged that…
“GRACIOUS WORDS are like a honeycomb, SWEETNESS TO THE SOUL AND HEALTH TO THE BODY.” (Proverbs 16:24 ESV)
There are healthy and unhealthy statements that can pass through our lips. Each has the potential of having a lasting impact on the lives of others. A statement (whether good or bad) may only need to be said once to have such an impact.
Paul urged…
“LET YOUR SPEECH ALWAYS BE GRACIOUS, SEASONED WITH SALT, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:6 ESV)
Yes, may our “speech always be gracious.” As we consider the characteristics and abilities of others, let us give due thought to the words we use. What we say has potential to SHAPE the focus and life of those to whom we speak. Perhaps our motto should be, “Once on the lips, forever having been worth saying.”
Have a great day SPEAKING WORDS WORTH REMEMBERING!

Expectations!
We may have some specific expectations for our life. Our parents, teachers, or others may also have certain expectations for us. However, those expectations could be either lazily low or unrealistically high. As we acknowledge God and accept His blessings (both physical and spiritual) we need to keep in mind His expectations regarding what He knows we can become and do. This is something that deserves our most serious consideration. As someone has stated, “The most solemn thing in the world is our accountability to God.” [source: “sentence sermons”]
The Hebrew writer noted…
“And no creature is hidden from his sight, but ALL ARE NAKED AND EXPOSED TO THE EYES OF HIM TO WHOM WE MUST GIVE ACCOUNT.” (Hebrews 4:13 ESV)
God knows us inside and out. He knows what we “could” do if we “would” and what we “would” do if we “could.” Are we aiming too low or are we seeking to become and do what God desires for our life?
We live in a world where personal accountability is often taken lightly. It is far too easy for people to not follow through either with what they have said they will do or what they are able to offer. Our accountability to God should never be taken lightly. If we don’t live with an acknowledgement of our accountability to God, seeking to maintain a proper relationship with Him, then it becomes a “fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:31 ESV) All will stand before God’s judgment seat (Romans 14:10), each one of us giving an ACCOUNT of ourselves. (Romans 14:12) That is a solemn thing to seriously consider. However, we do not have to face life’s tasks and responsibilities alone. God offers His power and wisdom to aid us in carrying it all out. May we seek to know and live up to His expectations, trusting it can be so on ACCOUNT of His gracious provision of what is necessary to sustain our service to Him and others.
Have a great day AS A SERIOUS SERVANT OF GODLINESS!

Examiner's Report!
We have four Gospel accounts, each providing a glimpse into the life and teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to John what is recorded is only a portion of what could have been. (John 21:25) John also later wrote that what he proclaimed to his readers was what he and others had “heard” and “seen with our eyes” and “touched with our hands.” (1 John 1:1 -3) It was not second hand information.
As Luke began his record we read…
“(1) Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, (2) just as those who from the beginning were EYEWITNESSES and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, (3) it seemed good to me also, HAVING FOLLOWED ALL THINGS CLOSELY for some time past, TO WRITE AN ORDERLY ACCOUNT FOR YOU, most excellent Theophilus, (4) that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:1-4 ESV)
Luke was a physician and traveling companion of Paul. Being a physician it may be no surprise the word he used in mentioning “EYEWITNESSES” and our English word associated with it today. It comes from the Greek “autoptes” (“autos”, self, and “aptano” to see) which W. E. Vine’s “Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words” states “signifies seeing with one’s own eyes.” From this Greek word comes our word “autopsy.” A medical examiner who performs an autopsy, examines with his/her own eyes to determine the cause of death. A determination of facts is made in accordance with the evidence being SEEN WITH THEIR OWN EYES. However, the “autoptai” (Greek plural) to whom Luke referred were EYEWITNESSES not of a dead person, but of the risen Living One. As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, he noted there were many of these witnesses still living who could verify the truth relating to Christ’s resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:4-6)
May we be encouraged that though our eyes did not see Him, through the eyes of faith we can confidently believe because we have the EYEWITNESS accounts of those who did. As we continue to read the Gospel accounts and the words of the Apostles and what was foretold by the prophets (2 Peter 1:19), no matter how we scrutinize and “dissect” the Scriptures, we will see how all the facts of the case for Christ agree.
Have a great day KNOWING OUR FAITH RESTS ON RELIABLE TESTIMONY!

No Pulling Back!
In Hebrews 11 we read of heroes of faith who were willing to PRESS ON. In spite of the odds and even having not received in hand the complete fulfillment of what was promised, they PRESSED ON in following God. Their PRESSING FORWARD was not because there was no opportunity to do otherwise, but because they kept focused on the fact God had even better things in mind for them. Therefore their vision did not center on what they had left, but rather on what was AHEAD.
The Hebrew writer expressed it in this way.
“(13) THESE ALL DIED IN FAITH, NOT HAVING RECEIVED THE THINGS PROMISED, but HAVING SEEN THEM AND GREETED THEM FROM AFAR, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. (14) For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. (15) If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, THEY WOULD HAVE HAD OPPORTUNITY TO RETURN. (16) But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. THEREFORE GOD IS NOT ASHAMED TO BE CALLED THEIR GOD, for he has prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:13-16 ESV)
They lived by faith. They were not of those who shrank back. (Hebrews 10:39) What God had promised they could see and greet from afar, trusting Him to ultimately provide something better than anything this world could offer.
I don’t want to be known as one who shrinks back. I don’t even want to be one who remains where I am. I want to keep PRESSING ON FORWARD. God is not pleased with those who shrink back (Hebrews 10:38), but for those who PRESS ON in faith, He is not ashamed of the relationship -- “TO BE CALLED THEIR GOD.” May that be God’s view of our relationship to Him as we choose to keep MOVING FORWARD with Him! There is no shame in that!
Have a great day PRESSING UNASHAMEDLY TOWARD HOME!

Discipline's Goal!
Lack of discipline (whether we are referring to that which is self-practiced or what is received at the hand of others) leads to chaos and disorder in individual lives and in the world. Good parents lovingly discipline their children to direct their lives toward becoming good people who will be able to make a positive contribution to society. As they see best, these parents strive to instill characteristics of courtesy and consideration for others, dependability, good work ethics, honesty, the ability to discern right from wrong, etc. This is an important aspect of parenting that helps children move from functioning well in the family unit to functioning well in society at large.
Noting the provision of our loving Heavenly Father, the Hebrew writer wrote…
“(7) It is for discipline that you have to endure. GOD IS TREATING YOU AS SONS. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? (8) If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. (9) Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more BE SUBJECT TO THE FATHER OF SPIRITS AND LIVE? (10) For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but HE DISCIPLINES US FOR OUR GOOD, THAT WE MAY SHARE HIS HOLINESS.” (Hebrews 12:7-10 ESV)
God has an even higher goal in mind for us. His discipline and redirection of our lives is for the purpose of ultimately sharing HIS HOLINESS. Holiness is not automatic, but is rather instilled and developed in our walk with God. As we hang in there through life’s challenges, remaining steadfast and faithful to His Will, His own HOLY ESSENCE becomes more and more visible in our life. This goal of HOLINESS should be important to us because without HOLINESS we will not be able to see the Lord. (Hebrews 12:14) May we continue to be submissive to His direction so that HIS HOLINESS will become a part of our essence.
Have a great day APPRECIATING GOD’S CORRECTION AS HIS CHILD!

One Or The Other!
Jesus stated…
“WHOEVER IS NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” (Luke 11:23 ESV)
How does our manner of living convey the idea we are WITH JESUS? Do our actions reflect His Will or merely our own desires? Do we come across to others as wanting His Way or our way? Also, if we claim to be WITH HIM, how is that demonstrated in our commitment to His church and the members of it? Are we focused on encouraging by our own PRESENCE and INVOLVEMENT or are we a discourager by our absence? Are we striving to uplift the faith of others by our own faithfulness or are we guilty of tearing down what is being done by being critical. I’m reminded of the one who responded to another by saying, “Well, I prefer the way I DO IT to the way YOU DON’T DO IT.”
Through my years of ministry there are a couple of things I have found to be quite interesting. One of those is when I have talked with people in the community who remark, “Oh, that’s the church where _______ is a member” and the “member” to whom they referred was one who had not attended for quite some time. The other thing I have found to be quite interesting is how one person can be critical of something within a congregation of which I soon hear another speak of in a very positive way. Personal perspective is obviously the key in such a contrast. Sometimes it is merely personal desires or what one has put into it themselves that makes the difference in one’s assessment regarding what is actually there.
Certainly the church -- though redeemed and sanctified by the blood of Christ (Revelation 5:9; Hebrews 13:12) -- is made up of imperfect people. If I ever found the perfect congregation it would become imperfect as soon as I stepped through the door. Praise God He is not finished with me yet. I still have much growing to do. There are many things I can do better. I (and each one of us) must therefore be willing to be more and more submissive to Him and be patient with my brothers and sisters.
The Hebrew writer exhorted…
“(24) And LET US CONSIDER HOW TO STIR UP ONE ANOTHER TO LOVE AND GOOD WORKS, (25) NOT NEGLECTING TO MEET TOGETHER, as is the habit of some, but ENCOURAGING ONE ANOTHER, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV)
If we have a connection with Christ, the Head of His body (Colossians 1:18), there should naturally be a connection with the members of the body (each other). There is no way one can stir up others “to love and good works” or encourage through absence -- in fact the opposite result can occur. It is something we are to “consider”! It is something to which we are to give some thought. Some may not have intended to discourage or tear down, but what is being conveyed by our life with regard to our connection with Christ and His church is of utmost importance. If there is an attachment or concern, why would one not be there? PRESENCE and INVOLVEMENT (or lack there of) make a strong declaration.
Let us practice that which Paul urged the church at Thessalonica.
“And we urge you, brothers, ADMONISH the idle, ENCOURAGE the fainthearted, HELP the weak, BE PATIENT WITH THEM ALL.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14 ESV)
Have a great day BEING FOR CHRIST AND OTHERS BEFORE SELF!

Life Fellowship!
As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, he exhorted and asked…
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For WHAT PARTNERSHIP HAS RIGHTEOUSNESS WITH LAWLESSNESS? Or WHAT FELLOWSHIP HAS LIGHT WITH DARKNESS?” (2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV)
Paul continued listing the contrasted relationships between Christ and Belial (Hebrew usage seems to be that of a very wicked person and is perhaps used here of the devil who is the personification of evil), a believer and unbeliever, the temple of God and idols, and then reminded these Christians at Corinth that they were “the temple of the living God.” (2 Corinthians 6:15-16) With what or whom we have brought ourselves into fellowship will ultimately impact our life and its eternal destiny.
Solomon warned…
“One who wanders from the way of good sense WILL REST IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE DEAD.” (Proverbs 21:16 ESV)
The New Living Translations refers to such a one as ending up in the “COMPANY” of the dead. Not life, but with the dead! The resting of the life will be found with them! Paul referred to one who was dead even while they lived because they were living for self-indulgence or pleasure. (1 Timothy 5:6) To leave the COMPANY or fellowship of the “good sense” of godly wisdom for living is to ultimately find oneself ASSEMBLED among the dead.
In encouraging contrast, Solomon went on to point out…
“Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness WILL FIND LIFE, RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND HONOR.” (Proverbs 21:21 ESV)
With what are we seeking to maintain fellowship? What are we pursuing? As we grasp at life are we taking hold of life that is truly life? Is the way we are traveling a “dead end” or the “thoroughfare” that ultimately leads to life eternal? Pursuing righteousness will find us in the fellowship of life now and forevermore. May we keep the right ASSEMBLY in view.
Have a great day FINDING LIFE IN FELLOWSHIP WITH CHRIST!

For Me?
I recently clipped a cartoon depicting a husband and wife leaving a church assembly with the man remarking, “I think there’s enough sin out in the world for the preacher to preach about without getting so personal in his sermons.” Though the words were critical there was at least some acknowledgment that the MESSAGE APPLIED somehow to his own PERSONAL LIFE. It is far too easy for us to hear sermons, sit in a Bible study, and read our Bibles while thinking of others who need the exhortation more than we do ourselves. It reminds me of the story of the woman who always responded to the preacher as she left services, “Boy, you sure gave it TO THEM this morning.” One Sunday, due to severe weather, she ended up being the only one in attendance. However, knowing there was application in the day’s sermon, the preacher preached to her as if the auditorium had been full. Following the sermon the woman’s response was, “Boy if THEY had been here THEY sure would have gotten it today.”
We need to always be open to taking the message of the Word to heart. Regardless of what portion of Scripture we might be focusing on, there is an admonishment, exhortation, instruction, or encouragement that can be APPLIED to our PERSONAL LIFE. I appreciate the many times I receive a response from a “teEn-MAIL” recipient who honestly acknowledges their need for a particular focus, sometimes even stating their thankfulness for redirecting their life. Quite often the focus was what I needed PERSONALLY as well. There is great power in the Word if we will be honest and open to our own PERSONAL need for what we are reading.
Paul described the power of the Scriptures as follows:
“(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for TEACHING, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, and for TRAINING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, (17) that the man of God MAY BE COMPETENT, EQUIPPED for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
When focusing on the Scriptures we always need to consider the context first in terms of who is speaking, to whom the message is directed, and under what circumstances, as well as whether it is associated with life under the law of Moses or under Christ. Then we need to consider how the message APPLIES PERSONALLY before our focus moves to ways in which we might encourage or instruct others. As we are honest regarding the life changing power of Scripture we will be enabled to deal with the log in our own eye so that we can then see more clearly to help another with the speck in their eye. (Matthew 7:3-5)
There is something in the message of the Word for all of us. May we remain honest and open to the life principles there so that we do not miss out on the PERSONAL direction God seeks to provide. We can never take His Word too personally. As we focus on the Scriptures, let us be the student first so that we will be enabled to have both our manner of living and speech to be consistent with God’s truth.
Have a great day ALLOWING THE WORD TO WORK ITS WILL IN OUR LIFE!

Plugged In!
It amazes me how popular iPods have become. I see young and old involved in various activities with the earphones of their iPod stuck in their ears. It’s almost as if the music they are listening to is what is POWERING THEIR LIFE. If we were to slip up behind someone and pull the earphones (or earbuds) out of their ears, would it stop them in their tracks? Would they be unable to function? I see skateboarders, bicycle riders, drivers of automobiles (which is a definite no no), people doing yard work, walkers, runners, etc., all seemingly POWERED by what is programmed into their iPod. Among all these listeners, I’m sure there is great diversity in what kind of music is being listened to, but there is a sense in which they are plugged in and being fed something that appears to help them move on through their day.
Consider how in a real sense we are all plugged into an “i-think-Pod.” What we have chosen to listen to (books and other written media we read, movies, music, peers, etc.) becomes a source of what POWERS our THINKING and ultimately our LIFE. We need to be very careful of that which we have plugged into our ears. Paul referred to those who would surround themselves with teachers who would teach what their “itching ears” wanted to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3) Are we taking care to surround ourselves with what is best for our ears to be listening to so that our THINKING and LIFE will be properly POWERED?
Paul exhorted the church at Philippi…
“Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is HONORABLE, whatever is JUST, whatever is PURE, whatever is LOVELY, whatever is COMMENDABLE, if there is any EXCELLENCE, if there is anything WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)
These are the things we need to keep streaming into our ears. If we are listening to and allowing our LIFE TO BE POWERED by thoughts that do not fit into one of those categories, such should be unplugged and turned off. It is not for us. What we THINK soon turns to actions and can ultimately impact our LIFE destiny. May our “I-think-Pod” bring us continuous streaming of wisdom from above.
Have a great day LISTENING TO THE PROGRAMMING OF HEAVEN!
Carl
[P.S. I must give credit to our son who preaches in Scappoose, Oregon, for the “I-think-Pod” idea. He even made one as a visual-aid.]

Today's The Day!
Yesterday is passed and who knows about tomorrow? TODAY is a day not to be neglected. We have it for a purpose. Yet we make the choices regarding how it will be used. There are some things of TODAY we might have another opportunity for, but we may not know that for sure. There are also things that hold varying degrees of significance. I may neglect my lawn today, but the consequences of that are not great. However, there are other things of greater significance if neglected TODAY.
Paul wrote:
“For he says, ‘In a favorable time I listened to you, and in A DAY of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, NOW IS THE FAVORABLE TIME; behold, NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.” (2 Corinthians 6:2 ESV)
Certainly things in relation to our eternal salvation should never be put off. TODAY we have the opportunity to respond to God. It is a gamble to count on that opportunity tomorrow.
The Hebrew writer warned:
“(12) Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But exhort one another every day, AS LONG AS IT IS CALLED ‘TODAY,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (14) For we share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. (15) As it is said, ‘TODAY, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.’” (Hebrews 3:12-15 ESV)
It is important what we do TODAY with what we know from God’s word. It is dangerous to decide to put it into practice at some later date. We might not have that opportunity. Let us maintain a proper focus on TODAY.
Have a great TODAY TAKING CARE OF THE IMPORTANT THINGS!

Today!
Have you heard the following expression?
“TODAY is the TOMORROW you worried about YESTERDAY.”
Today is important to focus on because we have no power over yesterday. That time has passed and there is no way to call it back to be relived. Tomorrow is a possibility, but it is not for certain, and thus is also beyond our grasp. We can only be sure of the day at hand.
In the model prayer Jesus gave when giving His “sermon on the mount”, there was a focus on TODAY.
“Give us THIS DAY our daily bread,” (Matthew 6:11 ESV)
Jesus’ model prayer did not say, “fill our cupboards and warehouse to take us through another year.” This was a part of the prayer that focused on the daily needs.
Later on in this same chapter we read Jesus’ words following His teaching on anxiety or worry:
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. SUFFICIENT FOR THE DAY IS ITS OWN TROUBLE.” (Matthew 6:34 ESV)
Since each day has enough to focus on and take care of, why borrow from the next? Tomorrow will come as tomorrow will come. Understand, however, Jesus was not ruling out any planning for the future, but rather dealing with anxiety over things and days to come. Focusing on and properly taking care of the things of TODAY will take the anxiety out of the tomorrows God may give us and allow us to reflect on the yesterdays with peace and satisfaction.
Have a great TODAY ENTRUSTING GOD WITH YOUR FUTURE!

A Day!
Leonardo da Vinci once stated, “In rivers, the water that you touch is the last of what has passed and the first of that which comes: so with present time.”
The Scriptures have much to say about “TODAY” and our relationship to it. There are so many who spend their time either dwelling on the past or living only in anticipation of “special” days, living from one “special’ day to the next. It seems some never grow out of the feeling of a child who, as soon as he has opened his last Christmas present asks, “How long ‘till the Easter Bunny comes?”
We must never forget the importance, nor the specialness, of TODAY! Let us remember that the Psalmist wrote:
“THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24 ESV)
We need to realize that each day we have is special because God has blessed us with it as a gift. God gives us life in daily doses so as not to overwhelm us. TODAY is the day we have. TODAY is the day God has given us. Tomorrow is not ours and yesterday has moved beyond our grasp.
Have a great TODAY PRAISING THE GIVER OF THIS GIFT!

When To Consult!
There are businesses which know what their business is all about that will still on occasion call in a consulting firm to advise them on decisions being made. The business world can be very challenging and with companies competing against each other for the same consumer dollars, it is important to invest their energy, money, and time to the greatest advantage.
Life itself can be very complicated and the competition for the souls of mankind is fierce. The devil and his forces work 24/7 to gain control through advice and strategies that may sound good, but ultimately lead away from God and His Will. That is why it is important for us to consult God regarding our LIFE DECISIONS on a daily basis. Left to ourselves we are susceptible to being deceived.
Solomon urged…
“(5) Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. (6) IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV)
IN ALL WE DO we need to seek God’s guidance and walk the path He lays before us. Anytime we fail to consult God, we have chosen to step out on our own. With the devil prowling around like a roaring lion seeking whom he might devour (1 Peter 5:8) and since he also has the ability to disguise himself and masquerade as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), we need to remain vigilant in acknowledging the Will of God in association with ALL ASPECTS of our life. Like a business that recognizes the benefit in using some of its hard earned profits for paying a consultant, we should never underestimate the benefit of time invested on a daily basis in the Word of God. Doing so is the only way to safeguard remaining on track. After all, it is the Author of Life Who knows all about the business of life now and for eternity.
Have a great day BASING LIFE’S INVESTMENT ON GOD’S COUNSEL!

Handout!
We can put our hand out to get or give, to gain help or extend it, etc. For there to be a giver there needs to be a receiver and visa-versa. During a lifetime we will generally find ourselves on both sides. To remain on one side or the other can be unhealthy. We need to continue to receive (encouragement, love, income, etc) in order to continue giving. However, to remain content with being on the receiving end without contributing effort toward others is selfish and ungodly.
Someone has said, “A loafer in the church is of no more account than a loafer on the street corner.” [source: “sentence sermons”] Certainly there are poor who need to be helped. Such assistance is to be characteristic of our Christian walk. (i.e. Galatians 2:10; Matthew 6:2-3) Paul also warned against idleness. (2 Thessalonians 3:10-12)
There are some on street corners who hold signs that read, “Will Work For Food!” Some of these individuals may be very willing to do so while others are really only desiring a “handout”. Is that any different than any who sit in the church pew to be fed on the Word of God, yet are unwilling to give themselves in service to God and others? Perhaps in focusing on our Lord we need to come to a better understanding of what He saw as food.
When the disciples rejoined Jesus after His discussion with the woman at the well, we read…
“(31) Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, ‘Rabbi, eat.’ (32) But he said to them, ‘I HAVE FOOD TO EAT THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW ABOUT.’ (33) So the disciples said to one another, ‘Has anyone brought him something to eat?’ (34) Jesus said to them, ‘MY FOOD IS TO DO THE WILL OF HIM WHO SENT ME AND TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WORK.’” (John 4:31-34 ESV)
While the disciples were in Sychar buying food (John 4:8) Jesus had a very fulfilling and satisfying discussion with the Samaritan woman at the well. Do we find as much satisfaction in DOING THE WILL OF GOD as we do in backing away from the table with a full stomach? We gain spiritual nourishment in the process of laboring for the Lord. May we come to experience more and more the spiritual nourishment, refreshment, and satisfaction of putting our hand out in WILLING SERVICE to others in the Name of Christ. DOING GOD’S WILL needs to be acknowledged as NECESSARY FOOD for sustaining our souls.
Have a great day FILLING OUR PLATE WITH SERVICE TO GOD’S GLORY!
