Where Our Life Sits!
It can be challenging when translating from one language to another. The difficulty is in finding the right word to most accurately convey the original idea. This contributes to the complexity of making the Scriptures available in other languages. Through the process of listening to story telling in native languages, it has sometimes taken many years to come up with an alphabet and words to begin the translation process and put it in a written form. However, that process has sometimes been an enlightening one when words have been found to very beautifully communicate the depth of a Biblical principle.
The story has been told of a missionary attempting to translate the Bible into the language of the South Pacific. When it came to translating the word “BELIEVE” he was unable to find a native word that clearly conveyed the biblical concept. The right word came to light one day when he observed a native sit down and use a word that meant, “I am resting my whole weight on this chair.”
What a beautiful concept of BELIEVING; to mean “I am resting my whole weight upon.” Does that describe how we BELIEVE in God and the message of His Word? Are we resting the whole weight of our life upon Him and His Will for us? Is our view of the trustworthiness of God and His Word enough that we are able to sit with our whole life resting comfortably there?
As Paul noted the manner in which he had begun to teach the Corinthians, he stated..
“(1) And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. (2) For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. (3) And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, (4) and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, (5) that your FAITH MIGHT NOT REST IN THE WISDOM OF MEN BUT IN THE POWER OF GOD.” ( 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 ESV)
Paul wanted to make sure the FAITH of the Corinthians rested on the right foundation. Where is ours resting? The “wisdom of men” can be a rickety place to sit. It sometimes looks nice, but its legs may give way, the back may fall off, or the seat may break through. On the other hand, the Power of God and the truth of His Word are adequate to support and sustain our life. With our life sitting there we don’t have to fear toppling over. We can sit down with confidence. May the world come to see how un-anxiously we are able to rest the weight of our whole life with God.
Have a great day TRUSTING GOD WITH OUR WHOLE BEING!
