No Retraction Needed!
There was an irate subscriber who stormed into the local newspaper office waving the current edition above his head, requesting to see whoever was in charge of the obituary section. Being directed to that individual, he yelled, “Obviously you can see I am very much alive and yet you listed me in the obituary column. I demand you print a retraction!” The columnist replied, “I never retract a story. However, I would be happy to list you in the birth announcement column and give you a fresh start.”
Jesus told Nicodemus “…UNLESS ONE IS BORN AGAIN he cannot see the kingdom of God.” and “… YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN.” (John 3:3 & 7 ESV) Nicodemus had difficulty understanding such a concept, but Jesus directed his attention away from the physical to the spiritual. What a wonderful opportunity we have in Christ to gain a FRESH START! Anyone who is in Christ has become a “new creation” or “new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17) and spiritually speaking, there is no need for a retraction because we have died in order to have this new beginning in Christ.
Paul encouraged…
“(2) Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (3) For YOU HAVE DIED, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (4) When CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:2-4 ESV)
Having died to self and to sin (Romans 6:2), our life is to be enveloped by Christ so as for Him to become our life. Being hidden in Him, He ought to be seen as we walk in His steps and seek to serve His purposes.
After mentioning the significance of having “died to sin”, Paul went on to say…
“(3) Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (4) We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, WE TOO MIGHT WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE.” (Romans 6:3-4 ESV)
Born again! New creation! New life! FRESH START! Have we been listed in both columns -- obituary and births -- in the eyes of God? Truly it is the reverse order of how we relate physically, but spiritually speaking it is the death which precedes the life we can have in Christ. May we accept God’s Way and rejoice in the FRESH START He has given us the opportunity to enjoy.
Have a great day REFRESHED IN THE RENEWAL GOD MAKES REALITY!

Right Thing And Way!
The manner in which we do things needs to be taken into consideration. With just about everything there can be a wrong way and a right way to do them. However, someone has well stated, “There may be a wrong way to do right, but there is no right way to do wrong.” [source: collection of “sentence sermons”] When it comes to wrong, wrong is just wrong.
In Isaiah we read…
“WOE TO THOSE WHO CALL EVIL GOOD AND GOOD EVIL, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20 ESV)
Regardless of the label, if something is wrong it is still wrong. Instead of trying to rationalize sin and wrong as some do, it is to be acknowledged for what it is and avoided. To think there is a right way to do wrong is to be deceived.
John noted…
“(7) Little children, let no one deceive you. WHOEVER PRACTICES RIGHTEOUSNESS IS RIGHTEOUS, AS HE IS RIGHTEOUS. (8) WHOEVER MAKES A PRACTICE OF SINNING IS OF THE DEVIL, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. (9) NO ONE BORN OF GOD MAKES A PRACTICE OF SINNING, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. (10) BY THIS IT IS EVIDENT WHO ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD, AND WHO ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL: WHOEVER DOES NOT PRACTICE RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT OF GOD, nor is the one who does not love his brother.” (1 John 3:7-10 ESV)
What is it that we are seeking to PRACTICE in our life? Who does what we PRACTICE align us with -- God or the devil? John did not leave room for any straddling of the fence here. When our PRACTICE is to do wrong, then we have brought our life into association with the devil and his PRACTICES. When our PRACTICE is to do right (righteousness) it reveals that we have been born of God and are carrying out His PRACTICES since He is righteous. May that birth be clearly evident in our manner of living.
Have a great day RIGHTLY CARRYING OUT RIGHT!

Pumped!
People get all pumped up emotionally over things in life. Excitement over causes and issues in society energizes actions and voices. There is also physical strength that is associated with being pumped up such as comes from “pumping iron” (weight lifting) to develop stronger muscles. We can put forth great personal effort to build up our physical strength in a way that enables us to accomplish many things. We can also be STRENGTHENED by the encouragement of others to act boldly with regard to things in which we believe. However, as beneficial as all that may be, we as Christians have a source of STRENGTHENING far above all this that can empower us to press on against all odds.
Note a desire Paul had for the saints at Colosse.
“May you be STRENGTHENED WITH ALL POWER, ACCORDING TO HIS GLORIOUS MIGHT, for all endurance and patience with joy,” (Colossians 1:11 ESV)
The Greek here is strong, using both a noun and verb form of the same word: “dunamei dunamoumenoi”, “power being powered”. The noun “dunamis” is the word Alfred Bernard Nobel (Swedish inventor, manufacture, and philanthropist, 1833-1896) thought of when he came up with the name for “dynamite” (1867), recognizing it’s power. Paul’s desire was for the brethren at Colosse to be STRENGTHENED with all strength or powered with all power. However we must note that Paul linked this STRENGTHENING to the “GLORIOUS MIGHT” of God or Christ. The Greek word translated “might” is “kratos” which refers to force, strength, or might. W. E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words states this word “is derived from a root ‘kra’, to perfect, to complete: ‘creator’ is probably connected. It also signifies dominion, and is so rendered frequently in doxologies.” It has been described as power that overcomes resistance and appears to only be used of God in the New Testament.
“Power being powered” by “His glorious might.” We have no less than the power of Almighty God available to STRENGTHEN, sustain and empower us in life. Are we depending on and yielding to that power God desires to work in and through us? Such STRENGTHENING will help us to continue standing strong through the exercising of “endurance” to boldly press on in work to His glory, as well as the exercising of “patience” in waiting upon the Lord to bring fruit and fulfillment according to His timetable.
The history of mankind through the Scriptures reveals that success has never depended merely upon man’s own strength or the strength of his numbers, but rather a reliance on the STRENGTHENING God provides to work out His Will. His “glorious might” is more than sufficient to STRENGTHEN us with all strength for joyful endurance and patience as we are confronted with the varying situations of daily life. May we continue to yield to it as we serve His Divine purposes.
Have a great day EMPOWERED BY THE GLORIOUS MIGHT OF GOD!

Making It Evident!
I think there is a lot of insanity in this world that is falsely called wisdom and knowledge. However, there are those who view Christians as being insane. Such an accusation was even levied against Paul. (i.e. Acts 26:24) Our calling is to live lives that reflect the REASONABLENESS of acknowledging the Lordship of Christ. How are we doing?
Paul encouraged those at Philippi to…
“(4) Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. (5) LET YOUR REASONABLENESS BE KNOWN TO EVERYONE. The Lord is at hand;” (Philippians 4:4-5 ESV)
First we must understand that our rejoicing is not based on circumstances, but rather is to be focused “in the Lord”. There are many circumstances of life which would make it appear unreasonable to rejoice. However, “in the Lord” we find rejoicing REASONABLE because our eternal hope is in Him. With such a life focus, the REASONABLENESS of our life is to be evident to those around us.
Instead of the word “reasonableness”, other translations have “forbearance” (ASV), “moderation” (KJV), “gentleness” (NIV & NKJV), “considerate” (NLT), and “gentle spirit” (NASB). The Greek word used by Paul is “epieikes”, from “epi” (used intensively) which means “unto” and “eikos” which means “reasonable.” [source: W. E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] As we consider the other words associated with “epieikes”, perhaps we can gain a clearer understanding of the sort of REASONABLENESS Paul had in mind.
When there is a lack of self-control, gentleness, patience, and consideration of others, then REASONABLENESS is often lost. If that is where one is, then it becomes almost impossible for others to reason with them. When one begins to retaliate against others there tends to be a lack of yielding to REASONABLENESS. Leaving vengeance in the hands of God (note Romans 12:19) we can look to Him to reward our gentleness and patience in responding to others.
To consider the nearness of our Lord’s coming, we must be mindful of maintaining a good temperament toward those around us. As others take notice of the way in which we respond, they may marvel at our loving response even when ill-treated. They may even think such a response to be unreasonable and wonder at how such restraint can be exercised. Such an example lived out in our life -- one modeled after our Lord Himself (1 Peter 2:23) -- has the potential of winning even enemies over to the Christian way of living. Let us never underestimate the power of our response to others in life. May the REASONABLENESS of living in accordance with God’s standard shine forth in our daily lives.
Have a great day EXEMPLIFYING THE SANITY OF FOLLOWING CHRIST!

Prayer!
How much is prayer a part of your life? Is it what you do in panicked situations (i.e. “God help me!”) or is it a frequent part of daily living?
I don’t always get what I pray for. Have you not experienced the same? Even when I do get what I have prayed for it does not always come in accordance with my timetable. However, none of that causes me to cease praying. The reality that encourages me is that God has blessed me in ways FAR BEYOND MY REQUESTS in prayer. That’s what marks the ability and wisdom of God. (Ephesians 3:20) Someone has stated, “Nothing lies beyond the reach of prayer except that which lies outside the will of God.” [original source unknown] Do we find encouragement in that?
Jesus exhorted the disciples with the following assurance.
“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ASK WHATEVER YOU WISH, AND IT WILL BE DONE FOR YOU.” (John 15:7 ESV)
John later encouraged…
“(14) And this is the CONFIDENCE that we have toward him, that IF WE ASK ANYTHING ACCORDING TO HIS WILL HE HEARS US. (15) And if we know that HE HEARS US IN WHATEVER WE ASK, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15 ESV)
The Will of God being done is what we always need to seek. His Will is always best because it takes more into consideration than what we are able to see and understand. As we allow the Word to abide in us we will have some guidance in the making of our prayerful requests. Let us therefore earnestly pray with great anticipation of God fulfilling His Will in our lives FAR BEYOND the desires that might initially prompt the praying.
Have a great day ANTICIPATING THE GLORY OF GOD’S WILL!

Messengers Of God!
God’s messengers have taken on various forms (i.e. Hebrews 1:7) in order to fulfill the purposes for which they were sent. God’s purposes will prevail. (Proverbs 19:21) Are we seeking for His purposes to be fulfilled in us? Are we encouraged by all that God has sent from above?
In a psalm David wrote as he hid from Saul, we read…
“(1) Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. (2) I cry out to God Most High, to GOD WHO FULFILLS HIS PURPOSE FOR ME. (3) HE WILL SEND FROM HEAVEN AND SAVE ME; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. ‘Selah’ GOD WILL SEND OUT HIS STEADFAST LOVE AND HIS FAITHFULNESS!” (Psalm 57:1-3 ESV)
David trusted in God to fulfill His purpose for his life. He continually looked above for the sending out of GOD’S STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS. Each deliverance David experienced was a view of GOD’S STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS.
What greater manifestation of GOD’S STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS has there been than the provision of deliverance that has come through the promised Messiah. God so loved the world that He sent His Son (John 3:16) in fulfillment of the promise He had made to Abraham.
Jesus, when handed the scroll of Isaiah (Luke 4:17), read from it and stated…
(18) ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me TO PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES and recovering of SIGHT TO THE BLIND, to set at LIBERTY THOSE who are OPPRESSED, (19) to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ (20) And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. (21) And he began to say to them, ‘TODAY THIS SCRIPTURE HAS BEEN FULFILLED IN YOUR HEARING.’” (Luke 4:18-21 ESV)
God’s messengers of HIS STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS had been sent from above. Jesus the Messiah came as God’s “Good News”. He fulfilled the purpose of setting us free from sin by the shedding of His blood on the cross. He brought clarity to our vision of what God desires in our life. Our yoke of slavery to the oppression of sin has been lifted and we are free. Have we been listening to God’s messengers of STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS? If so, may we allow them to embolden our reliance upon Him as we open up our lives for Him to fulfill His good purposes in and through us.
Have a great day OF STEADFAST RELIANCE ON GOD!

Standing Strong!
Fences can be made of a variety of materials and for a variety of reasons. We have two kinds of fencing around our yard. In the front we have a cedar rail fence. It doesn’t keep anything in or out, but does provide a nice rustic boarder to our front yard. In the back we have a chain link fence designed to keep our dog in and other dogs out. Fences may also be constructed of barbed wire, brick, chicken wire, stone, wood, etc.
Recognizing the differing materials and purposes of fences, there are similarities when we consider CHARACTER. The makeup of people’s CHARACTER is not always of the same substance. CHARACTER can also serve to keep out, hold in, or establish certain defined boundaries of which others may eventually become aware. What CHARACTER is made of is of utmost importance because, like a fence, all the whitewash or paint in the world will not strengthen shoddy workmanship.
What are we truly within? When our life is exposed to the elements (life’s storms that attempt to weather our lives) are we developing CHARACTER that will withstand those forces? Is our CHARACTER made up of the right stuff that will hold strong against the winds of this world’s ideas that might attempt to topple us over? Are we growing in CHARACTER that will resist the rot of worldliness that may try to cause us to crumble?
Paul was one whose life was marked by a desire for consistency between his claims and how he lived. His aim was to live before both God and man in all good conscience. (Acts 24:16) Being a man of godly CHARACTER, Paul was enabled to stand strong in the face of opposition.
In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth he wrote…
“(1) Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But WHAT WE ARE IS KNOWN TO GOD, AND I HOPE IT IS KNOWN ALSO TO YOUR CONSCIENCE. (12) We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about WHAT IS IN THE HEART.” (2 Corinthians 5:11-12 ESV)
Yes, God knows what we truly are. We must focus on more than just the outward appearance we are keeping up and consider what is in the heart. A little paint or whitewash may fool the world for a while, but in time weak CHARACTER shows through.
If our life is beginning to lean we had better take a look at what foundation we have set it in. If there are gaps we need to seek to fill them with the right materials. Let us continue to seek God’s Will and the strength He provides in sustaining godly CHARACTER so that others may ultimately see what truly has the power to remain standing strong through all the things life throws at us.
Have a great day REMAINING UNMOVED BY THE WORLD’S FORCES!

An Esteem Issue?
As we look at the life of Paul, though we would join him in acknowledging his error of judgment prior to accepting Jesus as the Messiah and rightfully view him as an imperfect being like the rest of us, we would still note him as being a great man of faith who surrendered his life fully to do the Will of God. However, to read some of Paul’s statements about himself one might wonder about his emotional and social stability.
Note how Paul described himself in his letter to Timothy.
“(15) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save SINNERS, OF WHOM I AM THE FOREMOST. (16) But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.” (1 Timothy 1:15-16 ESV)
Now note a statement from his letter to the church at Ephesus.
“(7) Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. (8) To me, though I AM THE VERY LEAST OF ALL THE SAINTS, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,” (Ephesians 3:7-8 ESV)
And consider his view of himself in his letter to the church at Corinth.
“(7) Then he [Jesus] appeared to James, then to all the apostles. (8) Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. (9) For I AM THE LEAST OF THE APOSTLES, UNWORTHY TO BE CALLED AN APOSTLE, because I persecuted the church of God.” (1 Corinthians 15:7-9 ESV)
For Paul to view himself as the foremost of sinners, the least of all the saints, and the least of the apostles and his unworthiness to even be called one, could one conclude he had a struggle with low self-esteem? Some might draw that conclusion from statements such as these. Paul was not down on himself, but humbly acknowledged all the blessings and hope that were his were very much unmerited. As he mentioned to the church at Rome, Paul’s life attested to the marvelous gifts GOD’S MERCY and great PATIENCE were. Hope for eternal life was available. To the church at Ephesus Paul noted the richness of GOD’S GRACE that made it possible for him to be called a saint (a holy being sanctified by the blood of Christ) given the privilege of preaching the Good News of Jesus. As he wrote to the church at Corinth regarding his apostleship, Paul went on to point out that it was by the GRACE OF GOD that he was what he was. (1 Corinthians 15:10) All of this would have attested to Paul’s realization of THE VALUE GOD PLACED ON HIS LIFE and the lives of all others who responded to His gifts in an appropriate manner. If there is anything that should boost personal self-esteem, should not that do it?
Let us remain humble as we consider where we are because of Christ. May we never forget that what we are and what we have is possible because of GOD’S GRACE. However, the fact it cost “the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19) to make it possible is a declaration we have enough VALUE IN THE EYES OF GOD for Him to have been willing to have such a price paid. Let us humbly accept God’s provisions as we strive to live in a manner that reveals HIS GRACE has not been received in vain. (2 Corinthians 6:1) We are loved and wanted by Him!
Have a great day UPLIFTED BY OUR SIGNIFICANCE TO GOD!

Amen!
“Amen.” The Hebrew for this word is “amen”. The Greek for this word is “amen”. “Amen” is “Amen”! It is a word which has been transliterated from the Hebrew, left unchanged as it was incorporated into the Greek, and then into the English language as well. It is a word which apparently needs to be expressed no other way. However, has it retained its meaning in our life? When we say “Amen”, we are personally AFFIRMING our belief and acceptance with regard to a statement made. Perhaps we could consider “Amen” faith’s exclamation point at the end of a spiritual truth. “Amen” is the declaration to “let it be so.” And if it be God’s Will, why should we want it any other way?
Someone has rightly said, “Be an ‘Amen’ Christian, but don’t shout it louder than you live it.” [source: “sentence sermons”]
What we strongly AFFIRM verbally needs to be as strongly AFFIRMED bodily. What we are ready to boldly “Amen” with our mouth should be seen to be just as established in our conduct.
Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul declared…
“(18) As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. (19) For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. (20) For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that WE UTTER OUR AMEN TO GOD FOR HIS GLORY.” (2 Corinthians 1:18-20 ESV)
Paul had in no way been wishy-washy in the message he had declared to the church at Corinth. The message was God’s, the One who is consistently faithful and holy in all He does. Paul had boldly AFFIRMED the fulfillment of things in Christ Who was the “Yes” to all the promises of God. For us to “Amen” the promises should be to respond in righteous living. To “Amen” the promises should cause us to “Amen” God’s commands and warnings as well.
“As surely as God is faithful”, what He has declared will be so! We can therefore speak the “Amen” because of the “Yes” God has made possible through Christ. May we speak and live in such a way that there is a consistent “Amen” AFFIRMING our openness to God’s Will working in and through our life to His glory.
Have a great day LETTING A CONSISTENCY BE SO!

Holds The Keys!
I have been in two federal penitentiaries and two county jails. No, I was not there as a prisoner, but as a visitor. Walking within the walls of those places, I was behind not one, but several sets of locked doors. I could not have gotten out on my own any more than those who were imprisoned there. However, I was not afraid. I knew that when it was time to leave I would be able to do so. I WALKED WITH the one who had the keys.
At times we may feel the confines of this life. Do we allow those limitations to unsettle us? Do we sometimes sense we are as much a “prisoner” of the struggles of this life as those who do not acknowledge God? Do we forget we are NOT WALKING ALONE?
As John was exiled on the island of Patmos (Revelation 1:9), he had a vision. Many encouraging things were revealed to him, of which he was to write down so that his readers could be blessed by what he recorded. (Revelation 1:3) We may not understand all the images in this writing of John, but as we read through the pages of this letter we should not come away with great fear, but rather the encouragement of the victorious overcoming that is ours in WALKING WITH CHRIST.
As Jesus revealed Himself to John we read…
“(17) When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, (18) and the living one. I DIED, and BEHOLD I AM ALIVE FOREVERMORE, and I HAVE THE KEYS OF DEATH AND HADES.” (Revelation 1:17-18)
John may have been exiled, but he knew the One who held the keys. As Jesus was once dead and then raised to life -- death no longer having dominion or mastery over Him (Romans 6:9) -- He holds that same assurance for us. Jesus holds the authority and power over death and its realm. The last enemy to be destroyed is death (1 Corinthians 15:26) and as we WALK WITH the One who holds the keys, the fear of death (Hebrews 2:15) can be removed because of the blessed eternity that awaits us. May we continue our WALK WITH HIM.
Have a great day WALKING FREE WITH CHRIST!

Keys!
Do you remember when you were given your own key to the house? That meant you were able to enter without your parents being home. How about your own set of car keys? Perhaps you are of an age that such is still a delightful anticipation. Receiving one’s own set of car keys may be viewed as even more significant than the house keys, because car keys are a symbol of even greater independence. However, along with keys comes something that is awesome; RESPONSIBILITY! When one has the keys to lock and unlock, along with that privilege comes the RESPONSIBILITY to make sure the house is locked when away and also to consider who is brought in when the door is unlocked. With the use of car keys, one becomes responsible for the life of every one else being taken for a ride as well as the consideration of all others out on the road. To possess keys is a privilege that is to be approached in a very RESPONSIBLE way.
As Jesus rebuked some of the Jewish leaders for their lack of leadership, he stated…
“Woe to you lawyers! For YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY THE KEY OF KNOWLEDGE. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.” (Luke 11:52 ESV)
Matthew recorded Jesus accusing the scribes and Pharisees of shutting “the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces.” (Matthew 23:13 ESV) Instead of RESPONSIBLY using the key of knowledge they proudly claimed to possess, they were guilty of slamming the door and locking it, thus hindering others from accepting Jesus and entering into the kingdom of heaven.
When Peter made his great confession regarding Who Jesus was (is), Jesus responded…
“(18) And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell [(Gk.) hades] shall not prevail against it. (19) I WILL GIVE YOU THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:18-19 ESV)
Peter was given keys. How RESPONSIBLE was he with the keys placed in his hands? After the ascension of the Lord, on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1) when a great crowd gathered, Peter preached the truth of Jesus, opened the door to the kingdom, and we read that “those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” (Acts 2:41 ESV)
Are we hiding the key to the knowledge of Jesus? Are we leaving it in plain sight so others can find it? Do we carry it in our pocket, ready to share and open the way so others can enter into the kingdom through Jesus? We have been privileged with the key (God’s Word) of knowledge regarding salvation in Christ. With that privilege comes RESPONSIBILITY. As we have entered, may we not be guilty of hindering others, but rather unlock and open the truths of Jesus for others to see and enter in.
Have a great day BEING A CONSCIENTIOUS KEY HOLDER!

Recognizing Good Deals!
It’s marked on shampoo bottles, candy bars, cereal boxes, salad dressings, and other food products. It catches our attention. It sounds like a good deal. So we reach for it. “20 PERCENT MORE FREE”. “MORE” is a word that is so appealing. MORE food for our buck. MORE money. MORE time. MORE room. Second helpings at the dinner table. MORE, MORE, MORE. And when it is FREE … what a deal!
The world offers a lot of things cleverly packaged to catch our attention. Buzz words are used to draw us in with the hope we will buy. Sometimes we get a good deal. Other times we are disappointed and unfulfilled. However, the words “MORE” and “FREE” continue to catch our attention. It reminds me of the children who put out a sign that read in large print, “FREE LEMONADE.” It was only up close that one could see the smaller print reading, “sugar one dollar extra.”
Writing to the church at Rome, Paul presented a contrast between Adam and Christ. Through Adam came death, while through Christ came life. The sin of Adam brought death into the world and all became subject to it because “all sinned.” (Romans 5:13) However, Paul’s encouragement was the provision God made through Christ.
Continuing the contrast, Paul wrote…
“(15) But the FREE GIFT [(Gk.) “charisma”] is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, MUCH MORE have the grace of God and the FREE gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. (16) And the FREE gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the FREE GIFT [(Gk.) “charisma”] following many trespasses brought justification. (17) If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, MUCH MORE will those who receive the abundance of grace and the FREE gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:15-17 ESV)
Though “FREE GIFT” appears five times in the ESV, twice (as noted above) it is translated from the Greek word “charisma” which refers to “a gift of grace” [W. E. Vine]; a gift not earned or merited. That is why it is referred to as something FREE. It is FREE to us because Jesus paid the price to make it so. It is therefore ours on His account.
Also what we have in Christ is not just MORE, but as the Greek states it is “mallo mallon”; “MUCH MORE”. Not 20 percent more. Not 50 percent more. To recognize what is offered in Christ far and above what this life and world can offer, would we not admit that it far exceeds 100 percent MORE?
In Christ we are offered something we do not want to pass up. No clever packaging -- just a message of salvation focused on a cross. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 1:18 & 20-23) Not an offer extended based on the wisdom and buzzwords of men (1 Corinthians 1:17; 2:4a), but with a focus on the power of the cross of Christ and a demonstration of the Spirit and power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:4b-5) May we humbly accept, on the terms of God, the gracious gift Jesus humbled Himself to FREELY provide. The benefits are MUCH MORE than will be experienced in this life alone, but will carry on into an eternity with our Lord.
Have a great day DRAWN TO THE GREATEST DEAL!

Role Models!
There are many people within our society and around the world who are viewed as heroes or role models. Characteristics of their lives have drawn the attention and aspiration of others. However, we would probably agree that not all these individuals are worthy of being imitated. We ourselves are most likely focused on by someone who sees our life as an example, whether that be a bad one or good. It is therefore important for us to be mindful of the way we conduct our lives.
This world is much in need of good examples. Jesus came to this earth and lived an exemplary life and revealed how one can live a godly life even in the midst of an ungodly world. We should view Him as the supreme example for our life. (i.e. Philippians 2:5) It is also encouraging when we can see others in this life who set an example worthy of following. What kind of role models do we focus on?
The psalmist David exhorted…
“MARK THE BLAMELESS and BEHOLD THE UPRIGHT, for there is a future for the man of peace.” (Psalm 37:37 ESV)
The Hebrew words translated “MARK” (shamar) and “BEHOLD” (ra’ah) are both in the imperative. “Shamar” is defined as “to keep, to guard, observe, give heed” and “ra’ah” is defined as “to see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider.” [source: Strong’s Lexicon] According to David it is imperative that the “blameless” be observed and taken note of and that the “upright” be focused on and considered. Such characteristics are worth desiring to possess. Noting those of like character encourages us to continue to live in the same manner.
It is also good to take note of those who are bad examples as Paul urged…
“(17) I appeal to you, brothers, to WATCH OUT FOR THOSE WHO CAUSE DIVISIONS AND CREATE OBSTACLES contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. (18) For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” (Romans 16:17-18 ESV)
The Greek word translated “watch out” is “skopeo” and means “to look at, consider, implying mental consideration.” [source: W. E. Vine’s Expository Dict. Of N. T. Words] Our English word “scope” comes from this Greek word. The King James Version uses the word “MARK”. It protects ourselves and the lives of others when divisive people are “scoped out” and taken note of so that their influence can be avoided.
Paul encouraged…
“BE IMITATORS OF ME, AS I AM OF CHRIST.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV)
And the Hebrew writer encouraged…
“REMEMBER YOUR LEADERS, those who spoke to you the word of God. CONSIDER THE OUTCOME OF THEIR WAY OF LIFE, and IMITATE THEIR FAITH.” (Hebrews 13:7 ESV)
Let us be careful where our focus rests. The characteristics we most focus on will tend to have the greatest influence in our life. When we feel the draw of desiring to imitate another, let us carefully consider what it is about their life that has caught our attention and make sure it is truly worthy of imitation. Then let us also consider the example we are leaving others to BEHOLD.
Have a great day PERCEIVING THE MARKS OF GODLY LIVING!

Hand To Stand!
When we have fallen down, isn’t it nice when someone extends their hand to help us stand? To feel the hand of another and knowing it will be there for us is a great encouragement in life. How wonderful it is when we have learned who it is we can depend on, even when we might not understand some of life’s situations.
Consider Job. How quickly he went from riches to rags (sackcloth, Job 16:15). Such has easily made many bitter toward life and angry at God. However, Job looked to God in the face of these sudden changes.
We read…
“(21) And he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD.’ (22) In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” (Job 1:21-22 ESV)
It was a confusing time for Job. He had no clue regarding Satan’s involvement in things. Even if God had brought it upon him, Job refused to curse Him (Job 3:9-10), but instead maintained his hope in God. (Job 13:15) What a marvelous example of life being ENTRUSTED to the HANDS OF GOD.
David was another example of one who ENTRUSTED himself to the HANDS OF GOD.
“(3) For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; (4) you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. (5) INTO YOUR HAND I COMMIT MY SPIRIT; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.” (Psalm 31:3-5 ESV)
Jesus offered these same words of trust as He faced death on the cross.
“Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT!’ And having said this he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:46 ESV)
Regardless of the challenges David faced, he continued to view his life as being safe in GOD’S HANDS and so spoke those words in view of life. Jesus spoke the words in view of death. Whether it be in life or death, do we see that our life can be ENTRUSTED in the HANDS OF GOD?
Peter noted our Lord’s focus as an example for our life.
“(21) For to this you have been called, because CHRIST also SUFFERED for you, LEAVING YOU AN EXAMPLE, so THAT YOU MIGHT FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS. (22) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. (23) When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but CONTINUED ENTRUSTING HIMSELF TO HIM WHO JUDGES JUSTLY.” (1 Peter 2:21-23 ESV)
LET US TRUST!
Let us learn to trust God’s hand
Even when we don’t understand
Though life may deal a lousy hand
And things don’t always go as planned,
When feet feel poised on shifting sand
It’s time to let our faith expand.
For left alone we can’t withstand
The things on us life might demand,
But trusting God’s extended hand
He will sustain and in power grand.
So let us learn to trust God’s hand
Even when we don’t understand.
[Carl W. Hanson 07/17/2006]
Job, David, and our Lord Himself all revealed that our Heavenly Father can be trusted. God knows! God sees! May we be encouraged with life left in HIS HANDS.

When Wearied!
In life we get frustrated with the way some things go. There are times we may even be brought to tears in the struggles of life. In the midst of the pressures of living in this imperfect realm we can wear ourselves out as we try to remain firm in our standing in and for the truth of God. The thing that sometimes causes our perspective in life to look so dismal is that we get tired. Our bodies and our minds NEED REST. There is the need to withdraw in order TO REST and REFOCUS. Having taken on flesh (Romans 8:3 and Philippians 2:7), our own Lord acknowledged that need for Himself and His disciples. (i.e. Luke 5:16 and Mark 6:30-31)
David made the following encouraging statement.
“(4) Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. (5) For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, BUT JOY COMES WITH THE MORNING.” (Psalm 30:4-5 ESV)
Haven’t we all experienced having something we were dealing with that didn’t seem quite so ominous after a good night’s sleep? When being wearied about things of life, sometimes what we need to do is lay it out before God and then try to GET SOME REST. It may all appear differently in “the morning.” Having RESTED, our reasoning powers become sharper and our physical and emotional states are renewed. Refreshed from the night’s REST, the challenges often then begin to appear smaller and more manageable. Also, when we refocus on the present situations, measuring the challenges in comparison with God’s ability and power, we can find reason to once again rejoice.
God has given us life in daily doses for a reason. It is the increments in which life can be adequately handled. (i.e. Matthew 6:34) With the dawning of a new day is the rising of new hope and new opportunities. May we accept the night time for REST and trust God for a fresh perspective with each new day He brings.
Have a great day RISING WITH RENEWED PERSPECTIVE FOR LIVING!

Do YOU Know Who You Are?
One of the important principles for us to remember in our Christian walk is to ACT rather than RE-ACT. If our actions are always contingent (linked to or in response to) the actions of others, we have actually placed ourselves under their control. If we allow others to have that kind of power over our lives we are going to find ourselves in an unstable and unpredictable condition. Only God knows what our next action might be.
We need to focus on who we are and thus how our actions relate to who we are rather than to what others do. I think Jesus was able to endure what He did and able to keep the control He had because He knew who He was and did not have anything to prove. Are our actions consistent with others’ behavior or with who we are (a child of God)? Do we act toward others based upon what they do or who we are? The answer to that reveals the true nature of our character.
Paul was one who knew who He was (a servant of God) and thus acted accordingly. In his letter to the church in Corinth he spoke of his action in this way:
“(12) and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, WE BLESS; when persecuted, WE ENDURE; (13) when slandered, WE ENTREAT. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.” (1 Corinthians 4:12-13 ESV)
There is power being who God has called us to be. Jesus had pointed out, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called SONS [or children] OF GOD.” (Matthew 5:9 ESV)
Don’t allow the world to determine your actions. Let the spirit of godliness move you to act in accordance with the image God created you to have.
Have a great day BEING WHO GOD HAS CALLED YOU TO BE!

Need Reminding!
We know David’s life was not without conflict. However, his life was also filled with many blessings and great successes. When we experience the alternating between diverse circumstances and situations in life it can give occasion for a shifting in our focus. Through it all is there a consistency in where our confidence and trust are placed?
David wrote…
“(6) As for me, I SAID IN MY PROSPERITY, ‘I SHALL NEVER BE MOVED.’ (7) By your favor, O Lord, you made my mountain stand strong; you hid your face; I was dismayed.” (Psalm 30:6-7 ESV)
How many at various times in life have looked at their situation and declared self-confidently, “I’ve got it made!”? Was that not the focus of the rich fool? (Luke 12:16-19) When things are going well it is far too easy for our focus to shift away from God and relax in a focus of self-confidence. After all, when all is going well, who NEEDS GOD? However, could it merely be that at those times we have simply become unconscious of God’s hand in continuing to sustain us where we are? Life’s rough spots tend to bring our focus back to acknowledging God’s awareness and presence as well as our CONTINUAL NEED of His care and provision. Nevertheless that should be our consistent focus throughout life.
Note a statement by Agur, son of Jakeh.
“(8) Remove far from me falsehood and lying; GIVE ME NEITHER POVERTY NOR RICHES; feed me with the food that is needful for me, (9) LEST I BE FULL AND DENY YOU and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ OR LEST I BE POOR AND STEAL AND PROFANE THE NAME OF MY GOD.” (Proverbs 30:8-9 ESV)
Agur was well aware of the challenge varying life experiences can have on the personal focus. He acknowledged the potential impact of having more than needed and less than needed and how it could relate to his relationship to God. Therefore he was content with simply having what was “NEEDFUL” from God.
Is there any hour that we do not NEED GOD? May we strive for a consistency of focus on our reliance on God through the fantastic as well as the challenging moments of life. There is great comfort in a continual awareness that He is “not far from each one of us.” (Acts 17:27) Praise God for His awareness and sustaining power.
Have a great day FOCUSED ON THE ONE WHO KNOWS OUR EVERY NEED!

Links Of Fellowship!
In this life there may be individuals we will “patronize” without our life actually coming into a close RELATIONSHIP with theirs. In fact there may be some with whom fellowship is not able to be made possible. To “patronize” is defined as being a customer or client of and “patronage” is the trade of customers. If we approach Christ only from the standpoint of carrying on business or what we can get from Him, that does not indicate much of a RELATIONSHIP. We cannot buy the services He has rendered to make our life and salvation possible. And if we are only out to get what we can from others within the body of Christ, that does not speak well of those RELATIONSHIPS either. It is not patronage, but fellowship that Christ seeks from us and to be enjoyed with one another.
Writing to Christians, John stated his purpose in writing as…
“(3) that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, SO THAT you too MAY HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH US; and indeed our FELLOWSHIP IS WITH THE FATHER AND WITH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.” (1 John 1:3 ESV)
Fellowship (Gk. “koinonia”) refers to a close mutual association. It is a SHARING or PARTICIPATION WITH another. It is a “having in common” (koinos). [source: W. E. Vine’s Exp. Dict. Of N. T. Words] John wrote “so that” such genuine fellowship with the Lord and with one another would be experienced.
John went on to point out that if one claims to have fellowship with God, yet walks in darkness, the claim is a lie. (1 John 1:6) Fellowship with each other and with Him means we are walking in the light. (1 John 1:7) There is no fellowship between light and darkness. (2 Corinthians 6:14) However, remember the power light can have over darkness.
John further described the picture of such fellowship later in his letter when he wrote…
“(23) And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and LOVE ONE ANOTHER, just as he has commanded us. (24) WHOEVER KEEPS HIS COMMANDMENTS ABIDES IN HIM, AND HE IN THEM. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.” (1 John 3:23-24 ESV)
Such is the picture of being genuinely CONNECTED to the Lord and to one another. Are we experiencing the comfortableness of such fellowship? Do we feel a closeness of heart and mind with the Lord and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ? Are we contributing effort in maintaining the fellowship in mutually edifying ways? Fellowship implies RELATIONSHIP and SHARING. May it be genuine with our Lord and with each other in His body.

Will Be There!
There are some things that cannot be avoided regardless of how much we might try. There are events associated with our life that are not of our own planning. Even though we may not know the when and where, there are inescapable events for which we will be present. Woody Allen is quoted as saying, “I’m not afraid to die. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” Again, regardless of our desire, there are some events we won’t miss.
Our birth was not the result of our planning, but the planning of others. That event took place and though we had a limited awareness, we were there. When the time for our departure from this realm comes, we may not know the time and place, but the event is unavoidable and we will be present. This being the reality, what we need to do is make sure that when we lie in death we ARE READY for what lies beyond death.
Paul exhorted…
“(10) Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For WE WILL ALL stand before the judgment seat of God; (11) for it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, EVERY KNEE shall bow to me, and EVERY TONGUE shall confess to God.’ (12) So then EACH OF US will give an account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:10-12 ESV)
“All”. “Every”. “Each.” These words point to the inescapable fact of being there! Therefore we ought to be mindful of the kind of people we are, striving to live godly and holy lives so that we can live in eager anticipation of that which is to come. (2 Peter 3:11-12)
How we die, where we die and when we die is not as important as how READY we are for the event to take place. The B-I-B-L-E has been referred to as “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.” Praise God He has preserved His Word so that we can know what is necessary to be prepared. Now is the time for planning so that when we are there we will be found to BE READY to enter into that which God has prepared for His redeemed.
Have a great day LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT WHICH WON’T BE MISSED!

Court In Session!
Under the rule of the Roman Empire, if one was accused of a crime they were brought before a tribunal. A tribune was a Roman official whose function was that of protecting citizens from arbitrary actions. Members of the tribunal were TRAINED in the law and through listening to witnesses and cross examination would either commend or condemn the one brought before them. Today we have courts and judges where people are brought to stand trial. Sometimes court schedules get so full the trial has to be put off for a while. However, there is a court that is always in session; one that if properly TRAINED may eliminate the fear of coming before the courts of the land.
Someone has said, “The tribunal of conscience exists independent of edicts and decrees.” [source: sentence sermons] The conscience is only a good guide when it is TRAINED in accordance with the right standards and values. Our conscience needs to be based upon the Will and Word of God. Such a well TRAINED CONSCIENCE can keep our actions on track even when there is no other authority present.
As Paul talked about obedience of Jews and Gentiles, he spoke of those who “by nature” did what the law required. (Romans 2:14) They had developed a consciousness regarding right and wrong that did not necessitate God’s law being right in front of them.
Describing what went on within, Paul wrote…
“(15) They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while THEIR CONSCIENCE ALSO BEARS WITNESS, and THEIR CONFLICTING THOUGHTS ACCUSE OR EVEN EXCUSE THEM (16) on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 2:15-16 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads…
“(15) They demonstrate that God’s law is written within them, for THEIR OWN CONSCIENCES EITHER ACCUSE THEM OR TELL THEM THEY ARE DOING WHAT IS RIGHT. (16) The day will surely come when God, by Jesus Christ, will judge everyone’s secret life. This is my message.” [NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House]
As we step into each day, may we do so with the light on in that court within. Continually taking to heart the Word of God, let us allow a God TRAINED CONSCIENCE to keep our life on course. With that court always in session, when it begins to accuse, let us turn back to the right. When it defends our actions as right, let us remain firm in standing for that which is holy and righteous in the eyes of God. Living in this manner before God will take the fear out of the judgment to come.
Have a great day GUIDED BY GOD’S TRIBUNE OF TRUTH WITHIN!

Inhaling Life!
Sometimes it is nice to just slow down and take in a deep breath. In fact, it is good for the body. Our body needs oxygen. An adequately oxygenated body allows the muscles to do the work they are intended to do as well as allowing the brain to function at peak level. Inhaling fresh air is vital to sustaining life. However, there is other BREATHING that is of utmost significance to our existence as well.
The Scriptures do not give a lengthy description of God’s creation of man. Though it is important to recognize man was created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) -- an image God has provided the means to renew (Colossians 3:10) -- the few details of the substance that went into making man and his becoming a living being are very significant.
We read…
“(7) then the Lord God formed the man OF DUST FROM THE GROUND and BREATHED INTO HIS NOSTRILS THE BREATH OF LIFE, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7 ESV)
GOD BREATHED into that which He formed of dust and life entered into man. Man became energized by the BREATH of God to fulfill the purposes for which he had been created. We are to be mindful of life being lived not for self, but ultimately for His purposes. He Who gave us life is to be acknowledged as the director of it. The One Who has the power to BREATHE life in, also has the power to take it away and destroy both body and soul. (note Matthew 10:28) GOD BREATHED and man became a living, BREATHING being. In His BREATH is the power of life!
Paul noted…
“(16) ALL SCRIPTURE IS BREATHED OUT BY GOD and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE COMPETENT, EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
GOD BREATHES and things come to life. God’s Word is “living and active.” (Hebrews 4:12) God’s Word has power to bring life to us and equip us for the works He desires us to do because He BREATHED the life into it. That Word, received and planted within ourselves, has power to save (James 1:21) and to sustain (Hebrews 1:3).
As the BREATH of God brought life to man in the beginning, may the Word He has BREATHED be deeply inhaled into our life so that we may live the life God destined for us to live. What is associated with the BREATH of God has power to sustain not only for this life, but for eternity. May we continually enjoy its freshness.
Have a great day PROPERLY OXYGENATED FOR OUR SOUL’S EXISTENCE!

Reason For Confidence!
We can look at ourselves and have plenty of reason for no confidence. Placing confidence in ourselves (especially with regard to eternity) is risky at best. However, we can have confidence in what God has made possible for us now in a way that removes the fear with regard to the future, including the coming judgment of God.
John encouraged…
“(16) So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (17) By this is love perfected with us, so that we MAY HAVE CONFIDENCE for the day of judgment, BECAUSE AS HE IS SO ALSO ARE WE IN THIS WORLD.” (1 John 4:16-17 ESV)
John had earlier mentioned our being like Jesus when He comes. (1 John 3:1-2) Such a blessing is linked to the love of God that has made it possible for us to be children of God presently. However, that third chapter reference was to the LIKENESS we will have in eternity. Here in chapter four John’s reference was to a present LIKENESS as being the secret of our confidence. “AS HE IS SO ALSO ARE WE IN THIS WORLD.” The more we presently recognize how much of CHRIST’S LIKENESS we share, the more confidence we should have in facing that which is to come. As we continue to live and walk in Him (note 1 John 1:7) it is in that present position that we can have confidence knowing God views us as individuals closely identified with His Son, Jesus Christ, and will deal with us as such. Therefore, why should we fear when in Christ our condemnation has been removed (Romans 8:1) and God lovingly sees us as His dear children and members of our Lord’s body. We are not to wait to be LIKE HIM, we are to be bearing HIS LIKENESS now!
Have a great day LIVING CONFIDENTLY IN HIS LIKENESS!

Personal Delivery!
There are a lot of ways to deliver messages to people today. We can use regular mail, airmail, special overnight delivery, e-mail, fax, text messaging, or even the method of personally handing our messages directly to another. Such means are used to deliver a variety of types of messages, some more important or serious than others. What kind of PERSONAL MESSAGE is our life delivering?
Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul stated…
“(2) YOU YOURSELVES ARE OUR LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all. (3) And you show that you are A LETTER FROM CHRIST delivered by us, WRITTEN not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but ON TABLETS OF HUMAN HEARTS.” (2 Corinthians 3:2-3 ESV)
The lives of the Corinthians were to be a LETTER testifying to the work of Paul and the message of Christ they had received. How mindful are we of the PERSONAL MESSAGE our life is delivering as we go about our daily lives? Whether we are thinking about it or not, some kind of message is being delivered. Our lives are being read by those around us. Let us continually live mindful of the “personal delivery” being exemplified by our manner of living. May we strive to live a PERSONAL MESSAGE of righteousness others will find worth reading and taking to heart.
Have a great day LIVING THE MESSAGE OF CHRIST!

Precious Possession!
When something is given to us, we can then possess it as our own. The possession may even become something cherished. We may also develop a sense of pride in it being ours. However, is it possible to get so caught up in calling the possession our own that we forget from where it came as if we had secured it on our own? Is it possible to RECEIVE something and yet live as if it had been “achieved” instead?
The church at Corinth had a problem with pride which led to divisiveness rather than unity. As they had RECEIVED the gift of salvation in Christ, they were also gifted in knowledge and other spiritual gifts. They began to think too much of what they possessed instead of remembering the source of those things and the intended purpose toward mutual edification within the church.
In an attempt to redirect their focus, Paul asked…
“For who sees anything different in you? WHAT DO YOU HAVE THAT YOU DID NOT RECEIVE? If then you received it, WHY DO YOU BOAST AS IF YOU DID NOT RECEIVE IT?” (1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV)
The New Living Translation clearly reads…
“What makes you better than anyone else? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if all you have is from God, WHY BOAST AS THOUGH YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING ON YOUR OWN?” [NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House]
It appears a sense of having “achieved” had replaced the reality of having RECEIVED! Do we ever struggle there? Have we ever boasted with regard to what is ours, having forgotten from Whom it was RECEIVED?
Writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul reminded…
“(8) For BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED through faith. And this is NOT YOUR OWN DOING; it is the gift of God, (9) not a result of works, so THAT NO ONE MAY BOAST. (10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV)
We need to maintain a proper perspective regarding what we have RECEIVED from what we have “achieved”! Paul reminded the church at Ephesus how they had been saved by grace through faith rather than by their own doing and that their works were a natural outgrowth of having been saved. (Ephesians 2:8-10) Understanding this in our own life we need to be mindful of a continuing walk in those works prepared in advance for us to do. Paul also acknowledged the mercy he had RECEIVED as a testimony of the Lord’s “perfect patience” toward those who would believe in Him for eternal life. (1 Timothy 1:12-16) Paul didn’t forget. He knew what He deserved, but gloried in Christ for what he had RECEIVED.
When it comes to our salvation there is no room for boasting in ourselves. We did not “achieve” what we have RECEIVED by grace, and must not forget that. Rather than boasting, “Look what I’ve got”, our attitude should be, “Thanks be to God I have RECEIVED it by His grace and the power of the blood of Jesus and it is assuredly mine in Him.” If we are going to boast, let it be in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:31) and in the cross of Christ (Galatians 6:14) that has made life possible.
Some might look at Paul’s life and call him a “high achiever.” I think what was key to the effectiveness of Paul’s ministry was his humility in remembering what he had RECEIVED and that God desired others to RECEIVE it as well. He had not “achieved”, but by the grace of God he was what he was, having not RECEIVED it in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:10) May we also never lose sight of the fact we have surrendered to Christ to RECEIVE our salvation, not to “achieve” it. Praise God for this precious gift we can call our own.
Have a great day HUMBLY ACKNOWLEDGING THE GRACIOUS GIFTS OF GOD!

Obeying God!
My wife and I WALKED different places together today. Now, you may be saying, "What? Different places, but together?"! Of course that doesn't make sense and if such depicted our life, my wife and I would not have much of a relationship. It takes a willingness to agree upon and move the same direction for a relationship to thrive and survive.
The nation of Israel was exhorted to WALK in God's statutes and observe His commands. If this was done God would continue to bring blessings to them. (Leviticus 26:3ff) However, if the nation WALKED "contrary" to Him, then He would be against them. (Leviticus 26:21) The Hebrew translated "contrary" carries the idea of "opposition, contrariness, encounter, contrary or hostile encounter" (Strong's Concordance), so it only stands to reason if one WALKS in opposition to God, God would stand in opposition against them. To refuse to WALK with God is to place oneself in a hostile relationship with Him. Even Jesus clearly implied there is no middle of the road in the relationship with Him. (note Matthew 12:30)
In Amos we read.
"Do two walk together, unless they have AGREED TO MEET?" (Amos 3:3 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads. "Can two people walk together WITHOUT AGREEING ON THE DIRECTION?" [NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House]
Regardless of our claims, unless we are WALKING the direction God is going we are not WALKING with Him. Obeying God is to WALK with Him and whenever we see we are not WALKING together, it is never God Who needs to change direction, but rather us! God has set the course and we need to "agree" with Him to WALK in it. To do anything else is to be found WALKING in opposition or hostility to Him. Unless we WALK with God we will find ourselves involved in a hostile encounter with Him. Why place ourselves in the wrath from which Jesus provided the means to deliver us? (Romans 5:9)
We don't know a lot about Enoch except that he WALKED with God and God took Him. (Genesis 5:24) May that be descriptive of our life as well so that we can be assured of God's eventual taking us home. Let us be mindful of continuing to WALK with God in the direction He has set. Such a WALK will be found to be one of sweet communion.
Have a great day AGREEING WITH GOD BY WALKING HIS DIRECTION!

To Him!
David was a valiant warrior and a man of great faith. Certainly he had his ups and downs and challenges in life, but he had a marvelous way of getting his focus back to where it needed to be. He had a good heart; a heart that continued to be inclined toward GOD. And with the INCLINE OF HIS HEART was the INCLINE OF HIS VISION.
In one of David’s psalms we read…
“(1) Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning. (2) Give attention to the sound of my cry, MY KING and MY GOD, for TO YOU DO I PRAY. (3) O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” (Psalm 5:1-3 ESV)
The latter part of verse two in the New Living Translation reads, “… for I WILL NEVER PRAY TO ANYONE BUT YOU.” [NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House] For David there was no one else to LOOK TO in the challenges of life. As we look at the record of David’s life there appears to be not even a hint of being tempted to look toward some other god. GOD was it! The Living GOD was David’s SINGULAR FOCUS. No wonder we see so much stability in his life that he should be called a man after GOD’S own heart. (i.e. 1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22) To GOD David prayed and to GOD he looked, watching for GOD’S Will to prevail.
There’s a grand hymn we sometimes sing that contains the refrain “Where could I go, but to the Lord?” (hymn by James B. Coats, 1940) Regardless of what is going on in life, where else could we go but TO THE LORD? Where else should we WANT TO GO, but TO HIM? Like GOD’S servant David, may our hearts be INCLINED TOWARD GOD so that the FOCUS OF OUR VISION may be also. Let GOD be the only One to Whom we pray as we watch in faith for what He will bring about.
Have a great day MAINTAINING THE FOCUS ON THE ONE TO WHOM WE CAN GO DAY OR NIGHT!

Here We Go!
Over the last thirteen days we have meditated on the HERE AND NOW. With all this in mind we are ready to press on into the future. It does not matter how many days, years, decades, centuries, or millenniums may pass. Our Eternal Father, who is not bound by time, holds the key to a glorious eternity for those who are His.
What will the days of the future hold for us? We may not know the circumstances or events, but we can know we are safe in the hands of the One Who brings us each new day.
HERE AND NOW let us each decide where our true allegiance rests.
HERE AND NOW may we resolve to seek the Will of God.
HERE AND NOW may we be sure our affections are focused where they ought to be.
Remember Jesus' words.
"(37) And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with ALL YOUR HEART and with ALL YOUR SOUL and with ALL YOUR MIND. (38) This is the great and first commandment." (Matthew 22:37-38 ESV)
This is what Jesus would have us to do so that our relationship with Him may transcend this realm on into eternity. With such a heart we will be open to the work God desires to accomplish in and through us.
The Hebrew writer's prayer for those to whom he wrote was.
"(20) Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, (21) EQUIP YOU with everything good THAT YOU MAY DO HIS WILL, working in us THAT WHICH IS PLEASING IN HIS SIGHT, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen." (Hebrews 13:20-21 ESV)
I pray that you continue to feel a sense of blessing through your meditation on God's Word. May you continue to focus on His Will and experience the blessed love and peace of God with each new day He provides.
Have a great day FOCUSED TOWARD A GRAND FUTURE!

The Here And Now! (part 13 of 13)
A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was leaving the room after paying
a visit, and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the
other side."
Very quietly the doctor said, "I don't know."
"You don't know? You mean, even though you are a Christian, you have no
idea what is on the other side?
The doctor was holding the handle of the door, on the other side of
which came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door a
dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.
Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice that dog? He
had never been in this room before. He did not know what was inside. He knew
nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened he sprang
in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I
do know one thing: I know my Master is there, and that is enough. And when
the door opens, I shall pass through with no fear, but with gladness."
-- Author Unknown
When the NOW is right the future holds no fear. Though we might not know
all that the future may be like, placing our faith in our Heavenly Father
NOW helps bring a sense of peace regarding the things to come. The blessed
things of NOW, through our relationship with God, can only mean even better
things for our eternal future.
John encouraged.
"(2) Beloved, we are GOD'S CHILDREN NOW, and what we will be has not
yet appeared; but we know that WHEN HE APPEARS WE WILL BE LIKE HIM, because
we shall see him as he is. (3) And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies
himself as he is pure." (1 John 3:2-3 ESV)
To know we are CHILDREN OF GOD NOW is enough to spur us onward and
upward toward the greater glory with which we shall someday be crowned. "Oh
to be like Thee!" What a grand thought! And whatever we might imagine our
glorious eternity with God will be like, I believe it will even be grander
than that. The reality of the relationship NOW will bring about an even more
glorious reality in the realm to come.
Have a great day COMMITTED TO GOD'S FAMILY FOREVER!

The Here And Now! (part 12 of 13)
Who is EXALTED in our life? Self? A sports hero? A movie star? A
statesman? Who?
The one whom we aim to please most by our life is the one who will be
most EXALTED. And who we EXALT in life HERE AND NOW has a bearing on Who
will be EXALTED in death.
Paul stated His aim in these words:
"(20) as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at
all ashamed, but that with full courage NOW AS ALWAYS CHRIST WILL BE HONORED
IN MY BODY, whether by life or by death. (21) For to me to live is Christ,
and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:20-21 ESV)
Regardless of what Paul was facing, his aim was to EXALT CHRIST! Christ
was the Lord of his life. Christ was his life! And with that resolve Paul
would even face death with his focus on Christ. Paul could retain such a
focus because he knew, in Christ, death was not loss, but gain.
May Jesus be EXALTED in our daily life NOW. And when we face death's
door, may He be EXALTED at that time as well. It will be to our benefit NOW
and to our greatest gain then. To EXALT Christ as the Lord of our life NOW,
will mean our ultimate EXALTATION into eternal glory through death.
Have a great day HOLDING CHRIST ABOVE ALL ELSE!

The Here And Now! (part 11 of 13)
In this life we STAND HERE and there NOW and again. Sometimes we don't know where we are to STAND and have to be told. Other times we have the choice of where to STAND. We STAND around. We STAND in line. We stand with others. And we are sometimes left to STAND alone. Where have we been found STANDING? Where are we STANDING NOW? Inside? Outside? Right side? Wrong side? Upside? Downside? Where will we STAND tomorrow?
We need to be decisive today. We need to look at where we are STANDING NOW! Someone has said that those who STAND for nothing will fall for anything.
God has made it possible for us to STAND in a realm to aid us so that even when we stumble we will have the encouragement to STAND back up. But our footing needs to be in the right place. STANDING where God would have us, we can rejoice in the gift of hope He provides.
Paul encouraged.
"(1) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (2) Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this GRACE IN WHICH WE STAND, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God." (Romans 5:1-2 ESV)
The standing in grace Paul mentioned is in the Greek active indicative. Paul referred to it as the present standing. And GRACE is the place to be found STANDING. God's gift of GRACE is extended so we can STAND in it even NOW!
Have a great day STANDING WHERE GOD HAS DESIGNATED!

the Here And Now! (part 10 of 13)
A loner. A misfit. An outcast. Have we experienced a sense of such? But what an uplift it is when we know we are being included! As God's children, even HERE in this realm, God wants us to feel that great sense of belonging NOW!
Peter encouraged.
"(9) But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (10) Once you were not a people, but NOW YOU ARE GOD'S PEOPLE; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." (1 Peter 2:9-10 ESV)
Part of God's wonderful work is to make somebodies out of nobodies. NOW we are God's people. HERE in this life we are His! And to be His NOW is to provide us with assurance and hope for the future.
Have a great day KNOWING TO WHOM YOU BELONG NOW AND FOREVER!
