Unfading Beauty!
The first day of May is celebrated by some as a Spring time festival called “May Day.” Besides dancing around a decorated “maypole”, one of the “May Day” traditions has been to place fresh flowers on the doorstep of a neighbor or friend, knock, and leave before they open the door to the delight of a colorful bouquet.
Though I believe every season has its own beauty, the many colors of the flowers is a beauty hard to surpass. What wondrous colors God has sprinkled over this globe on which we live! Tulip fields appear as a sea of bright colors waving in the breeze. Sunshiny yellow daffodils. Bluebells and hyacinth. And the list goes on of the awakening taking place in the gardens of Spring. To behold the beauty and smell the sweetness of flowers has the power to calm the spirit, refresh the focus, and remind us that life continues. Such a glorious part of God’s creation. Even Solomon in all his wealth and majesty was not dressed as gloriously as the flowers of the field. ( Matthew 6:28-29) However, as the time passes, what do we see? Are we not reminded that as the seasons cycle, so do the colors on which we gaze? We appreciate the beautiful blossoms while they are here, but the time of their blooming passes.
Recognizing the way it is with the flowers of the field, where do we find the seed of germination that brings about lasting beauty and glory? Peter, reminding his readers of the new life that was theirs in Christ, used a quotation from Isaiah ( Isaiah 40:6-8) as he pointed to that which remains constant. It is something thoroughly beautiful and wholly good.
We read…
“(22) Having purified your souls by your obedience to THE TRUTH for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, (23) since you have been born again, NOT OF PERISHABLE SEED BUT OF IMPERISHABLE, through THE LIVING AND ABIDING WORD OF GOD; (24) for ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and THE FLOWER FALLS, (25) BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD REMAINS FOREVER.’ And this word is the GOOD NEWS that was preached to you.” ( 1 Peter 1:22-25 ESV)
The truth! The Word of the Lord! The “imperishable” seed! The “good news” of Jesus! Though the beautiful flowers are here for but a season, GOD’S WORD is forever! It is the constant we can look to for calming the spirit. His promises are able to refresh our focus with the reminder there is an eternity that awaits us; a unending season of beautiful and eternal glory.
The beauty and freshness of Spring can be a very uplifting time of year. May we appreciate and enjoy the flowers, acknowledging them as one of God’s gifts in this realm. But as they spring up, opening their blossoms toward Heaven, let our focus also be directed Heavenward toward the Creator of life (and LIFE ETERNAL) and the Revealer of ETERNAL WISDOM by which to live our lives. Though the flowers fade, faith’s blossom can continue to beautifully and fragrantly remain. Oh, how sweet it can be!
Have a great day KEEPING FAITH’S FLOWER VIBRANTLY BLOOMING!
Carl
