Better Than Reformation!
Paul, writing to Titus, encouraged him of principles to remind those among whom he ministered that would have a positive impact on life. ( Titus 3:1-2) Those principles related to conduct in society at large as well as interpersonal relationships. Paul also reminded of the behavior present prior to the relationship with Christ.
We read…
“(3) For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.” ( Titus 3:3 ESV)
Such actions certainly lead to trouble. These behaviors often accompany a life out of control. There was the day when youth were sent to “Reform School” to try to get their lives turned around when such behavior was exhibited. There they were taught better things to focus on, how to deal with their anger and other emotions, and learn to make something good of their life. The hope was to make them contributors of good to society rather than detracting from it. To reform one’s life is a good thing. However, in Christ is found something better than “reformation.” In Him is provided the power of God for REGENERATION!
Paul went on to write…
“(4) But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, (5) he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, BY THE WASHING OF REGENERATION AND RENEWAL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, (6) whom he poured out on us richly THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR, (7) so that being justified by his grace we might BECOME HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE.” ( Titus 3:4-7 ESV)
The Greek word used by Paul that is translated “REGENERATION” is “palingenesia”. It is a compound of “palin” (again) and “genesis” (birth) and therefore refers to a new birth, being born again, or to have a new beginning. More than turning over a new leaf, it is a completely new and fresh start that we are provided in Christ. More than the changing of habits, it is a REBIRTH into a whole NEW LIFE. Rather than merely a remolding or reshaping it is to become a NEW CREATION.
Paul, writing to the church at Corinth stated,
“Therefore, IF ANYONE IS IN CHRIST, HE IS A NEW CREATION. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” ( 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)
Praise God for that NEW BEGINNING He has made possible. May we continue to live the NEW LIFE in Christ! There is no better way to live and it leads to life eternal.
Have a great day LIVING RENEWED!
