Better Than Reformation!

Paul, writing to Titus, encouraged him of principles to remind those among whom he ministered that would have a positive impact on life. (Titus 3:1-2) Those principles related to conduct in society at large as well as interpersonal relationships. Paul also reminded of the behavior present prior to the relationship with Christ.

We read…
“(3) For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.” (Titus 3:3 ESV)

Such actions certainly lead to trouble. These behaviors often accompany a life out of control. There was the day when youth were sent to “Reform School” to try to get their lives turned around when such behavior was exhibited. There they were taught better things to focus on, how to deal with their anger and other emotions, and learn to make something good of their life. The hope was to make them contributors of good to society rather than detracting from it. To reform one’s life is a good thing. However, in Christ is found something better than “reformation.” In Him is provided the power of God for REGENERATION!

Paul went on to write…
“(4) But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, (5) he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, BY THE WASHING OF REGENERATION AND RENEWAL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, (6) whom he poured out on us richly THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR, (7) so that being justified by his grace we might BECOME HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE.” (Titus 3:4-7 ESV)

The Greek word used by Paul that is translated “REGENERATION” is “palingenesia”. It is a compound of “palin” (again) and “genesis” (birth) and therefore refers to a new birth, being born again, or to have a new beginning. More than turning over a new leaf, it is a completely new and fresh start that we are provided in Christ. More than the changing of habits, it is a REBIRTH into a whole NEW LIFE. Rather than merely a remolding or reshaping it is to become a NEW CREATION.

Paul, writing to the church at Corinth stated,
“Therefore, IF ANYONE IS IN CHRIST, HE IS A NEW CREATION. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)

Praise God for that NEW BEGINNING He has made possible. May we continue to live the NEW LIFE in Christ! There is no better way to live and it leads to life eternal.

Have a great day LIVING RENEWED!

Getting Up From Down!

What do you do when you feel bummed out? How do you get yourself back up? Do you have a method you use to LIFT YOUR SPIRITS UP again?

Also, whenever you experience down moments do you wonder about your spirituality? Do you wonder if you are drifting away from God because "Christians should never feel down"?

Well, I don't know who started the idea that God's followers never have down times, because it's not true. The truth about life is that it has its ups and downs and with them come the changing of moods. Read through the Psalms and you will find times when David was down, but he always seemed to know where to look to regain a proper perspective of things, and thus was able to begin the journey back up.

One of the Psalms (noted as a Maskil of the sons of Korah) that reflects this type of focus is Psalm 42. Here the Psalmist remembered the up times and wondered about why he felt so downcast. He asked questions such as:

-- "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?" (vs.5)
-- "Why have you forgotten me?" (vs.9)
-- "Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" (vs.9)
-- "...my adversaries taunt me, ... 'where is your God?'" (vs.10)
-- He referred also to his "tears" as being his "food day and night" (vs.3)

Do those words reflect a gloomy spirit? But note the focus connected to those words:

-- "...Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." (vs.5)
-- "...therefore I remember you.." (vs.6)
-- "By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me -- a prayer to the God of my life." (vs.8)
-- And again -- "...Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." (vs.11)

Do you see the method used to begin THE JOURNEY BACK UP?

--Focus on prayer.
--Focus on a song in your heart.
--Focus on your remembrance of God.
Remember blessings you have received in the past.
Remember He is mindful of you today.
Remember His promises for the future.
--Focus on your relationship to God.
Keep your hope there.
Keep praising Him.
Keep acknowledging Him as your Savior and God.

It has been said: "When you're down, everything is looking up!" So, when you are down, stop for a moment and collect your thoughts and once again set your sights heavenward.

Have a great day UPLIFTED IN SPIRIT BY THE LORD!

Objects Of Remembrance!

There are things of the past which, when remembered, can serve to caution and prompt righteous actions and focuses for life. We may be surrounded by various objects that remind us of events or experiences of days gone by. Though the memories may powerfully encourage and motivate us to live rightly now, is it possible to make too much of the objects themselves?

As the nation of Israel wandered in the wilderness under the leadership of Moses, again and again this people murmured and complained. Though God continued to provide for their needs, they frequently seemed inclined to quickly grow “impatient on the way.” (Numbers 21:4) They raised their voices in complaint not only against Moses, but also against God (Numbers 21:5) as they would again think they would have been better off in Egypt. On one of those occasions God sent fiery serpents among the people as they complained about their food (Numbers 21:5-6) and many people began to die. This served to bring the people back to their senses as they acknowledged their sin. (Numbers 21:7) The people asked Moses to pray for the serpents to be taken away and so Moses prayed.

Note what God commanded Moses to do and its result.
“(8) And the LORD said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.’ (9) So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would LOOK AT THE BRONZE SERPENT AND LIVE.” (Numbers 21:8-9 ESV)

It was not that the image of the bronze serpent on the pole had any power of its own, but as the people obediently looked to it, they were spared by the POWER OF GOD. This incident became a shadow of the great benefit of Christ being lifted up on the cross for our salvation.

As Jesus talked with Nicodemus, He stated…
“(14) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, (15) that WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM MAY HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.” (John 3:14-15 ESV)

We may be proverbially “snake bit” by all kinds of things in this life, but Jesus is our source of eternal life. We are to continue looking to Him. As God provided a means of sparing the Israelites from death, so He has provided eternal life for us through Jesus.

Now, whatever became of that bronze serpent? To keep it around would perhaps have served as a reminder to the nation of Israel and succeeding generations to not murmur and complain against God, but instead remember Him as the Great Provider and Deliverer in life. Well, apparently the bronze serpent was kept because we read about it during the reign of King Hezekiah.

As Hezekiah tried to lead the nation back into a wholehearted relationship to God we read…

“He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And HE BROKE IN PIECES THE BRONZE SERPENT THAT MOSES HAD MADE, FOR UNTIL THOSE DAYS THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL HAD MADE OFFERINGS TO IT (it was called Nehushtan).” (2 Kings 18:4 ESV)

That which God had Moses make for the people to look to when bitten by the fiery serpents eventually became an object of worship. Do we find that amazing? However, is that any different than today when some seem to worship the cross while not retaining a proper focus on the Christ? We should not make more of the objects than what they were intended to be; objects of remembrance, but not objects of worship. The cross was the instrument of death in bringing about our cleansing by the blood of Jesus, but our FOCUS is to be ON THE SAVIOR. It is HIS POWER that saves us and HE IS THE ONE to rightfully receive our worship.

Have a great day KEEPING MEMORIAL OBJECTS IN THEIR PLACE!

To Follow ... Depends!

A man had the following inscribed on his tombstone:

“Pause, dear friend, as you pass by,
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now you soon will be;
Prepare thyself and follow me.”

Some thoughtful individual scribbled the following below the epitaph:

“To follow you I’m not content
Until I know which way you went.”

To follow ... depends!

I saw a bumper sticker that read, “Don’t Follow Me, I’m Lost Too!” To be on the safe side we need to set our eyes on Jesus. We need to follow Him since we know where He is! We know where He has gone to prepare a place! We know where He leads!

While walking on the face of this earth Jesus lived His life as an example to be followed. There is a beautiful consistency between His teaching and His life. As Christians we see Jesus as safe and worthy to be followed. But as we focus on His life and then our own, one thing to be mindful of is this: “Is my life worth following?”

Paul went to great pains at times to ensure that his life was a worthy example to follow. Regarding his example he wrote:

“(7) For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, (8) nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. (9) It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves AN EXAMPLE TO IMITATE.” (2 Thessalonians 3:7-9 ESV)

The New King James Version reads, “AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU SHOULD FOLLOW US.”

And in writing to the church at Corinth, Paul wrote:
“Be IMITATORS OF ME, AS I AM OF CHRIST.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV)

The King James Version reads, “Be ye FOLLOWERS OF ME, EVEN AS I ALSO AM OF CHRIST.”

We should strive to live such godly lives that we could make the same statement, yet still directing the attention and glory to Christ.

May we be careful to not be so short-sighted as to only try to live as good as those around us. We need to lift our eyes, behold the glory of Christ, and strive to be like Him. Let us keep “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith...” (Hebrews 12:2 ESV) and follow where He leads. That will make it safe for others to follow us.

Have a great day KNOWING “FOLLOW THE LEADER” IS NOT JUST A GAME!

Doubters! (part 2 of 2)

As we noted yesterday, some people will accept and believe just about anything while others won’t believe regardless of the evidence. These two extremes have been described in the statement: “Twin fools: one doubts nothing, the other doubts everything.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] We noted the second extreme yesterday. Today, let us consider the first.

There are many things we can INVESTIGATE and know for certain. There are truths of paramount significance to be accepted. However, there are also notions in this world that should be suspect. We seem faced with continual attempts to undermine the authority and reliability of the Scriptures. There are those who accept all other claims even when they are based on poor evidence and scholarship while rejecting the concrete evidence (even historical) that supports the Scriptures and events of those times.

Regarding the other side of doubt, John warned…
“(1) Beloved, DO NOT BELIEVE EVERY SPIRIT, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, FOR MANY FALSE PROPHETS HAVE GONE OUT INTO THE WORLD. (2) By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, (3) and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.” (1 John 4:1-3 ESV)

The Bereans were noble enough to search the Scriptures daily to make sure what they were being taught was true and were able to know the truth with certainty. (Acts 17:11) Though we should guard against developing a skeptical attitude toward all things, it is a safeguard to CHECK OUT what we are being taught. Praise God He has provided the written Word for that purpose. The truth of God can stand the test of INVESTIGATION. And to do so with an open heart will ultimately impress us more and more with how it truly does all fit together. No surprise having behind it a common source. (2 Timothy 3:16) May our daily life reveal we do believe.

Have a great day REVEALING HOW RATIONAL BELIEVING IS!

Doubters! (part 1 of 2)

Some people will ACCEPT AND BELIEVE just about anything. To them if they find it on the internet it just has to be true. Then there are others who are so skeptical they don’t think anything can be known for certain. These two extremes have been describe as follows: “Twin fools: one doubts nothing, the other doubts everything.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] Today, let us consider the second extreme and Lord willing we will consider the first tomorrow.

When Jesus told the story of the “Rich Man and Lazarus” (Luke 16:19-31), He noted the tendency toward disbelief as He pointed to the pleading of the rich man out of concern for his brothers, followed by the response of father Abraham.

We read…
“(30) And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but IF SOMEONE GOES TO THEM FROM THE DEAD, THEY WILL REPENT.’ (31) He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, NEITHER WILL THEY BE CONVINCED IF SOMEONE SHOULD RISE FROM THE DEAD.’” (Luke 16:30-31 ESV)

Such an attitude was actually revealed when, at Bethany, Jesus raised his friend Lazarus (the brother of Mary and Martha) from the dead. Some who witnessed this miracle went to the Pharisees which only helped strengthen the resolve in plotting Jesus’ death. (John 11:46-53) There are still those today who will not BELIEVE regardless of how clear and powerful the evidence presented may be. When Jesus was raised from the dead following His crucifixion, again, rather than ACCEPTING the evidence that had been prophesied, the leaders planned a cover-up. (Matthew 28:12-15)

As evidence and testimony are presented, there must remain an openness to the truth God has both preserved and revealed. To reject it places man without excuse. (Romans 1:20; 2 Peter 1:19-20) Let us BELIEVE that which is truly believable.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE TRUTH THAT CAN BE KNOWN!

Live So They'll Listen!

The statement has been made that the road to hell is PAVED with many good intentions. As we live our lives are we constantly mindful of PAVING THE WAY for others to be drawn toward God?

A few weeks ago while on one of my long walks, I came up behind a woman who turned and said, “Oh, hi.” She then asked if I shouldn’t be in another part of town where she has seen me walk on a regular basis. Telling her I had already been there, she replied, “Well of course you have.” As I paused my pace she asked if I was going to be in this year’s annual “Rhody Run”, a question I am frequently asked this time of year. I mentioned being a minister and since the “Rhody Run” registration and beginning are during our assembly time on Sunday mornings it didn’t work with my schedule. This led to her next question regarding where I preach. After letting her know, she then made a statement that certainly caught my attention. She remarked, “Your sermons might be worth listening to if they’re like the way you live and walk.”

Is that not a profound observation? Is that not something important to be mindful of as we live our daily lives? Could the need for a God glorifying life consistency have been stated any better than in this woman’s words? We are often seen before we are given the opportunity to be heard. Do our actions serve as a road block or do they instead PAVE THE WAY for being listened to?

As Israel was being reminded of God’s commands in preparation for their eventual crossing over into the promised land, they were encouraged regarding the importance of the manner in which they lived. In Moses’ exhortation toward faithfulness to God’s commands he stated…

“Keep them and do them, for that will be your WISDOM and your UNDERSTANDING IN THE SIGHT OF THE PEOPLES, who, WHEN THEY HEAR ALL THESE STATUTES, will say, ‘SURELY THIS GREAT NATION IS A WISE AND UNDERSTANDING PEOPLE.’” (Deuteronomy 4:6 ESV)

We need to live with an aim to glorify God and reveal through our daily actions the wisdom and understanding for life based upon God’s Will. If it is not being lived in our life, then why should anyone bother listening to us?

Paul exhorted…
“And WHATEVER YOU DO, in WORD OR DEED, DO EVERYTHING IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 ESV)

It is important to consider the impact it can have when people see the manner of our life walk and so become interested in what we have to say. Let us constantly aim for a consistency between our actions and words. If we want the message of Christ to be believable, our life actions must be believable as well. May our daily living help PAVE THE WAY that is best worth traveling.

Have a great day BEING A BELIEVABLE BELIEVER!

A Likeness To Him!

There is a lot that has been written about Jesus. The Gospel accounts and the writing of the Apostles tell us much about our Lord. Toward the end of John’s Gospel, he noted that Jesus did many other things not written, but what was written was so that we could believe and have life in Him. (John 20:30-31) John also stated that he supposed the world could not contain the books that could be written regarding the things Jesus did while on earth. (John 21:25)

Within the Scriptures we gain POWERFUL GLIMPSES of our Lord. We should be duly impressed by His life and teachings. His Words are still words of life. (John 6:68) The recorded actions of Jesus’ walk on earth are still the pattern of steps in which we should follow. (1 Peter 2:21) Peter provided what may perhaps be the shortest commentary on the life of Jesus when he referred to His going about doing good. (Acts 10:38) Then there is one verse -- the shortest verse in the Bible -- which provides a very POWERFUL INSIGHT INTO THE ESSENCE OF JESUS. It is a verse and a thought I frequently refer to when conducting a funeral or memorial service.

John wrote…
“JESUS WEPT.” (John 11:35 ESV)

The occasion was the death of his friend Lazarus. Lazarus had been dead for four days. (John 11:39) What prompted those tears? Did Jesus miss his friend who had died? Was His weeping due to a sense of His own personal loss? It appears JESUS WEPT because He was touched by the depth of grief and loss that surrounded Him there. He could see and hear the weeping of Mary and Martha, and all of the others who were present (John 11:33) and Jesus was deeply moved. His tender heart went out to them even though it was not a hopeless situation, for Jesus went knowing what He was going to do. (John 11:4 &11)

Someone has said, “We can measure our likeness to Christ by the range of our sensitiveness to the world’s sorrow and pain.” [source: list of sentence sermons]

For us to walk in the steps of Jesus and help this world understand the kind of love Jesus came to reveal, we must maintain a heart that can be touched by the varying situations of life. A shared tear can be a very POWERFUL thing. May our tears not just be for our own situations, but be prompted by our awareness of what others are experiencing. Being moved within will hopefully then move our hands and feet to offer whatever help and support we can give.

Have a great day CULTIVATING A HEART LIKE HIS!

Central Focus!

In the midst of the nation of Israel while they wandered in the wilderness, was the Tabernacle. This structure was designed and set up as the center of worship and focus on God’s presence in the midst of the camp. Eventually the Temple was built by Solomon and stood in all its magnificence in the midst of Jerusalem, the place where God had placed HIS NAME. The Temple was built for HIS NAME (1 Kings 5:5), not the name of David or Solomon or anyone else. Though the structure built under Solomon’s direction had to be rebuilt under the leadership of Zerubbabel at the time of Ezra, and then rebuilt again by the authority of Herod, the Temple in Jerusalem was noted for its exquisite beauty. It is no surprise the disciples of Jesus took note of the Temple buildings as they walked in Jerusalem. (Matthew 24:1) How sad for their grand focus to be met with the prophetic words from the Lord’s own lips regarding the time when one stone would not be left on another. (Matthew 24:2)

Man is often proud of the buildings and monuments he has erected and that pride is often coupled with GOD’S NAME and His Will becoming less and less the central focus of life. Following the flood of Noah’s day, some people gathered together to build a city and a tower. Note the central perspective associated with their actions.

We read…
“Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and LET US MAKE A NAME FOR OURSELVES, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.’” (Genesis 11:4 ESV)

Rather than focusing on God’s Will and His command to spread out over the earth, these people had a desire to make a name for themselves. They were viewing life as all about them, rather than being all about God and what He desired.

As Jesus walked away from the Temple that He accused some of making into a “den a robbers” instead of the “house of prayer” God had intended it to be (Matthew 21:13), we can see that the Will and NAME OF GOD were no longer central to the focus of that place. It was time for it to come down so that the focus could be moved from it to Him! As Jesus died on the cross, the veil between the Holy Place and Most Holy Place was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51) and in Him the way was opened for us to approach God in all His Magnificence.

The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(19) Therefore, brothers, since we have CONFIDENCE TO ENTER THE HOLY PLACES BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS, (20) by the new and living way that HE OPENED FOR US THROUGH THE CURTAIN, that is, through HIS FLESH, (21) and since we have a great priest over the house of God, (22) let us DRAW NEAR WITH A TRUE HEART IN FULL ASSURANCE OF FAITH, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:19-22 ESV)

A grass hut of true worshipers exalting the NAME OF GOD and genuinely seeking His Will is far more beautiful and glorious than the most ornate and costliest building where God and His Will are no longer reverently approached and honored above all. It wasn’t the Tabernacle or the Temple that was to be held central, but God Himself Who was to be glorified and praised. Is He truly remaining the central focus of our life?

Have a great day LETTING OUR LIFE BE ALL ABOUT THE GIVER OF IT!

Freedom Through Confession!

Yesterday we focused on the “Blame Game.” Today let’s consider how David found pardon and freedom from the guilt of his sin by not playing this game.

When David’s sin was made clear to him by Nathan, he did not play the “Blame Game”, but rather ACKNOWLEDGED HIS SIN as being against God (2 Samuel 12:13). David accepted accountability for all his actions relating to Bathsheba, her husband Uriah, as well as his short comings as leader of the nation of Israel. The burden of guilt was lifted through David’s ACCEPTANCE of accountability AND CONFESSION of his wrong doing.

Note David’s words in Psalm 32.
“(3) For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. (4) For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah (5) I ACKNOWLEDGED MY SIN TO YOU, and I DID NOT COVER MY INIQUITY; I said, ‘I WILL CONFESS MY TRANSGRESSIONS TO THE LORD,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah” (Psalm 32:3-5 ESV) [I might suggest that you also read Psalm 51]

John wrote:
“(8) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE us our sins AND TO CLEANSE us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9 ESV)

It is not the “Blame Game” that truly brings freedom. It is through the ACCEPTANCE OF OUR PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY for our actions and CONFESSION AND REPENTANCE that we find freedom. Praise God for the means He has provided.

Have a great day ACCEPTING YOUR ACCOUNTABILITY AND GOD’S FREEDOM!

The Blame Game!

One of the games played out in our society again and again is the “Blame Game.” We see it played out in our courts as the accused tries to be viewed as another victim. We see it played out in the political arena. It seems that no one wants to ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for their actions. If there is anyone or anything that can be blamed it is blamed.

But the “Blame Game” is nothing new. We see it played out way back in the garden of Eden. Adam played it. Eve played it. And this is how it went. After Adam and Eve had both eaten of the forbidden fruit they were confronted by God.

“(12) The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.’ (13) Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent deceived me, and I ate.’” (Genesis 3:12-13 ESV)

Adam blamed Eve first. But did you notice how he put some blame on God too? “The woman whom YOU gave to be with me….” Along with shifting the blame to Eve, was Adam also offering in his defense that if God had not given him the woman he would not have been deceived? Then we hear Eve place the blame on the serpent (Satan).

It is true we may have others encourage us the wrong direction or to make the wrong choices, but the choices still remain ours. Regardless of how much encouragement we receive we must ACCEPT ACCOUNTABILITY for our choices. The biggest tragedy of the “Blame Game” is that many have bought the pardon of the excuses and have failed to realize a day of ACCOUNTABILITY before God is coming for us all. The “Blame Game” may work in our society today. It may bring pardon in our court system. It may even allow one to move on in the political arena. But God looks at and knows the heart. All is laid bare before God. He created us as free-will individuals, but with that comes ACCOUNTABILITY. I am ACCOUNTABLE for my actions. When I mess up I must acknowledge it and seek forgiveness. And through Christ, God has provided the means of complete pardon.

[Tomorrow, Lord willing, we will focus on what David did rather than playing the “Blame Game” in order to find freedom from the guilt of his sin.]

Have a great day BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF AND TO GOD.

No shame!

Some proudly have no shame where there should be shame while others seem to be ashamed of that which should be confidently and proudly affirmed. Just as that is the case today, so it was during the first century of the early church. It appears the continuing challenge is to keep the focus straight and if the choice is not based on the right standard we will not get it RIGHT.

In the first chapter of Romans, Paul made a bold statement regarding His own life.

“For I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16 ESV)

The Greek word “ashamed” used by Paul in this verse is in the intensive form. Paul’s lack of shame was exhibited through his boldness in proclaiming the gospel verbally and in living it out in his own life. His life revealed he recognized the glory of his relationship to Christ and the honor resting on himself in the privilege of sharing the Good News of Jesus and the salvation found in Him.

In this same chapter, Paul referred to another group who had no shame. However, what they boldly affirmed was not in accordance with the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God!

We read…
“(26) For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; (27) and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men COMMITTING SHAMELESS ACTS with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for THEIR ERROR.” (Romans 1:26-27 ESV)

The Greek word used by Paul in verse twenty-seven refers to unseemlyness or shamelessness. Though what they were doing was contrary to God’s Will and design, they were not ashamed of the actions which should have caused them shame. In fact, like some today they appeared to be proud of it.

Note a statement found in Isaiah.
“For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they PROCLAIM THEIR SIN LIKE SODOM; THEY DO NOT HIDE IT. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.” (Isaiah 3:9 ESV)

The New International Version reads: “parade their sin like Sodom.” The Hebrew word translated “proclaim” in the ESV refers to being conspicuous, to announce, or report. Such reveals the arrogance and pride behind not hiding, but rather flaunting sin because due shame is not felt.

To feel shame for wrong is a GOOD thing. When we see any action in our life that is contrary to God’s Will, let us be humble enough to be ashamed and change our behavior by turning to God’s Way. However, when it comes to RIGHTEOUSNESS and the GOOD NEWS OF JESUS let us not feel shame or timidity. There is no need to be ashamed of that which is RIGHT AND GOOD. May we keep our focus on God’s RIGHTEOUS standard so that our choices are RIGHT!

Have a great day PARADING THE PATTERN GOD HAS PRONOUNCED!

Called Calling Called!

“Dispatch calling Medic One! Come in please!” The call goes out as LIFE IMPACTING information is in need of being communicated. When life is in peril, emergency 911 services dispatch the medics or police or fire department to go to the rescue. The call goes out and the call needs to be received and acted upon because it could be a life or death situation.

As Paul began his letter to the church at Rome, we read…
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, CALLED TO BE AN APOSTLE, set apart for the gospel of God,” (Romans 1:1 ESV)

On the road to Damascus, Paul was called and he responded. (Acts 9) He was set apart for the gospel, sent (as an Apostle) by Jesus to carry His Name “before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.” (Acts 9:15) Paul was Divinely dispatched with a LIFE IMPACTING message and mission.

With regard to those to whom Paul was writing he stated…
“(6) including you who are CALLED TO BELONG TO JESUS CHRIST, (7) to all those in Rome who are loved by God and CALLED TO BE SAINTS: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 1:6-7 ESV)

Can we perhaps hear… “Called calling the called! Come in please!”? Paul, having accepted His calling by Jesus, was writing to fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who were also called; “called to belong to Jesus” and “called to be saints” (holy ones, sanctified ones). Would we not agree that is a very high calling? Paul wrote to provide LIFE IMPACTING encouragement, exhortation, and reproof so that the lives of these Christians would reflect to the world the high calling they had received.

How about us? Does our manner of living reveal we recognize how we also have been “called to belong to Jesus” as well as “called to be saints”? Are we remaining open to the reception and transmission of faith to faith? (Romans 1:17) The response to the Gospel is a life or death situation. Its message is a LIFE IMPACTING communication we need to receive and be willing to relay to others in the field of this world. May we be willing to do our part in the Lord’s rescue of lost souls.

Have a great day DOING WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DISPATCHED TO DO!

Wearing The Name!

One of the things that strikes me again and again in this world is how what appears to be new is nothing new at all. Much of what we see and experience in this world has been a part of life throughout the ages. Perhaps that brings to mind the statement of Solomon regarding life in general when he noted…

“What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV)

Do we sometimes wonder why others have difficulty seeing the good in living the CHRISTIAN life? As in ages past there are still those who with pointing finger would cry, “Those Christians!” as if CHRISTIANS were amongst the most despicable beings on earth. But where did this name CHRISTIAN arise and what does it mean?

In Acts we read…
“(25) So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, (26) and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. AND IN ANTIOCH THE DISCIPLES WERE FIRST CALLED CHRISTIANS.” (Acts 11:25-26 ESV)

The text does not say these disciples called themselves Christians, but that that was what they became labeled. Perhaps some of the pagan citizens there in Antioch used this expression in a mocking manner as they pointed an accusing finger toward those who were believers in Christ. That “sect” to which Paul and other CHRISTIANS belonged was described as being spoken against everywhere. (Acts 28:22) Should it surprise us (note 1 Peter 4:12) when the same occurs today to one degree or another in various parts of the world?

Note two other places we find the expression “CHRISTIAN” used in the Scriptures.

King Agrippa used it as Paul made his defense before him.
“And Agrippa said to Paul, ‘In a short time would you persuade me to be a CHRISTIAN?’” (Acts 26:28 ESV)

And Peter used it when he wrote…
“Yet if anyone suffers as a CHRISTIAN, let him not be ashamed, but let him GLORIFY GOD IN THAT NAME.” (1 Peter 4:16 ESV)

Those called CHRISTIANS were noted as being followers of Christ. It is a term which identifies one with Him. Though it perhaps began as a derogatory label, to those striving to live for Christ and like Christ, it became a badge of honor that inspired remarkable courage. That is the result of being genuinely identified with Christ.

Some wear the name CHRISTIAN today who have not been born again (John 3:3 & 5); who have not put on Christ. (Galatians 3:27) Some of these individuals may reveal no sign of surrender to the Will of Christ (or demonstration of His likeness) and may have no regular connection with His Body (the church) at all! For some the term “Christian” has become a reference to simply being good. However, the very expression “CHRISTIAN” contains “CHRIST” and even when first used identified those so called as being devoted followers of Him.

Living as genuine CHRISTIANS wholly identified with Christ, we may still be ill spoken of by those who reject the values and Will of Christ. It was those Peter urged to “GLORIFY GOD IN THAT NAME.” Regardless of how the world may view us, our Lord knows the genuineness of our CHRISTIAN walk.

Peter exhorted the CHRISTIANS to whom he wrote…
“For this is the will of God, that BY DOING GOOD YOU SHOULD PUT TO SILENCE THE IGNORANCE OF FOOLISH PEOPLE.” (1 Peter 2:15 ESV)

Fingers may point and wag our direction as we strive to live for Christ. The label “CHRISTIAN” may be hurled at us as if it were a profane name. However, to live in a Christ-like manner can work to silence the ignorance of foolish people by giving them no valid cause for accusation. Let us keep doing what is good and right in the eyes of God. Our life may change the opinion of others regarding what being a true CHRISTIAN is all about, even persuading them to become one. May we truly feel a sense of honor in being identified with Christ as we strive to follow in His steps and Will!

Have a great day BEING FIRST, A CHRISTIAN!

Treasure!

Treasure! Is it always searched for in the right place? Is it always recognized when uncovered? Is it often walked past though it may sit in plain view? There are junk collectors who live by the motto “One person’s trash is another’s treasure.” However, there are those in the world who seem ready to trash that which truly should be treasured.

At a time when Assyria was threatening to once again march against Jerusalem, there was cause for terror, grief, and confusion. However, this destroyer who appeared so threatening would itself be destroyed. (Isaiah 33:1) Therefore, Isaiah spoke words of encouragement to the nation of God’s people to help them recognize a treasure that was still theirs.

We read…
“(5) The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; HE will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, (6) and HE will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS ZION’S [or HIS] TREASURE.” (Isaiah 33:5-6 ESV)

THE LORD, GOD! Oh how we should treasure HIM in all the ways HE deserves to be feared, honored, and trusted above all. There is a lot going on in this world that can give rise to anxiety. Do we truly recognize GOD as the much needed “stability for [our] times”? The politics and ideologies of this world have not even come close to solving man’s conflicts or bringing salvation. Do we realize the “abundance of salvation” that GOD has made available to us today through the gift of HIS Son, Jesus Christ and that He is the only means of that salvation? With all the libraries of books that have been written through the ages one might think that therein could be found adequate wisdom to correct the ills of society and yet our world is not getting better. Do we recognize the Word GOD has preserved for us to read and study is still the treasure chest of “wisdom and knowledge” that will make the greatest difference in our life and the lives of those we direct toward it?

Solomon declared…
“RIGHTEOUSNESS EXALTS A NATION, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34 ESV)

The best treasure of a nation (and each individual) is a religious spirit centered on the True and Living GOD! As Isaiah began in verse 5, may The LORD GOD truly be exalted in our own life. With a resolve to strive to live in accordance with HIS righteousness it will become evident how we truly do treasure above all else the stability, abundant salvation, wisdom, and knowledge that is found in allowing GOD to have HIS rightful place in our life. The proper “fear of the LORD” is where such wisdom begins and to practice such reveals we have a good understanding. (Psalm 111:10) May this perspective of our GOD be maintained and highly treasured!

Have a great day LETTING GOD’S VALUES REMAIN OURS!

Employed Life!

One of the things children need to begin learning at a fairly early age, is that there are times when work must come before play. Children -- most often living for the present -- don’t always give thought to the consequences that come when needed tasks are not completed. Many times a child plays away the hours only to be faced with the frustration and drudgery of the work still to be done when it could have and should have been finished and out of the way earlier. However, when the chores are done first, the play time enjoyed afterward is often sweeter. When this is learned in childhood it helps provide a better focus on priorities in adulthood.

There is a lot about life that we can enjoy. Nevertheless, that is not what this life is all about. There are important tasks to be focused on that are of eternal significance.

I recently came across the following quotation: “Time for employment; eternity for enjoyment. This life for battle; the next for the crown.” [original source unknown]

As I considered what was being expressed in those words, my focus centered on the life of the Apostle Paul. When it comes to an example of SELFLESS SERVICE for the CAUSE OF CHRIST, Paul is one of the grand ones who sticks out in my mind. His life was marked by a diligence for spreading the Gospel of Jesus and expending himself in that SERVICE. Paul knew that this life was the time for employment in the work of God and that his rest would come later. He recognized the war that was raging and was a conscientious SERVANT of the Lord in the battle for righteousness.

Because Paul seemed to have his life priorities right, he was able to look back on his life and toward eternity with the following focus.

“(7) I HAVE FOUGHT the good fight, I HAVE FINISHED the race, I HAVE KEPT the faith. (8) Henceforth there IS LAID UP FOR ME THE CROWN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)

Knowing how he had been employed in SERVICE in this life, Paul could look forward to the enjoyment of the reward and rest God had promised. That promise was not just for Paul, but for us as well. There is SERVICE for the Lord our life is to be employed in now. May we also fight on loyally as SERVANTS of Christ, pressing on to the finish of life’s race, keeping the faith that we too may receive the victor’s crown.

Have a great day EMPLOYED IN SERVICE TO THE LORD!

When God Questions!

In Genesis 3:9 God asked Adam a searching question:
“But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “WHERE ARE YOU?’” (ESV)

In I Kings 19:9 God asked Elijah a probing question:
“There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, ELIJAH?’” (ESV)

Could God not find Adam and Eve as they hid among the trees in the garden (Genesis 3:8)? Was God searching as in a game of “Hide & Seek”? Of course not! The God who is omniscient (all knowing) and omnipresent (everywhere) knows exactly where each one of us is physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually at any point in our lives.

Did God not know what Elijah was doing in the cave? Was God unaware of the discouragement Elijah was experiencing? Was God probing the mind of Elijah to find out what he was up to? Of course God knew what was going on with Elijah because His purpose at this time was to give this prophet the encouragement he needed to then go on and perform the task God had for him.

When we feel God asking us “Where are you?” or “What are you doing here?” the real thrust of the questions is “DO I KNOW?”

The church in Ephesus was warned:
“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.” (Revelation 2:5 ESV)

This group of Christians needed to SEE THEMSELVES WHERE THEY STOOD in relation to where they once were.

The church in Laodicea was exhorted:
“For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.” (Revelation 3:17 ESV)

These Christians were in need of OPENING THEIR EYES TO THEIR ACTUAL SPIRITUAL CONDITION.

It is important for us INDIVIDUALLY TO REALIZE WHERE WE ARE in relation to where God is and wants us, otherwise we become complacent with where we are and we make no spiritual progress. If our eyes depart from His direction we can become side-tracked and soon find our life off course.

As you read the Scriptures, hear God’s searching and probing questions. Let His message then direct you on His course and equip you to do His will. We must seriously COME TO GRIPS WITH WHERE WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE DOING IN RELATION TO GOD’S WILL. May our individual prayer be, “Lord, open my eyes that I may see as YOU see me.”

Have a great day ENLIGHTENED BY GOD!

Through A Mother's Eyes! (part 2 0f 2)

Today is marked on the calendar as “Mother’s Day.” Mothers are significant! God chose to use a mother to bring the Messiah onto life’s scene. The birth of a child opens the door for MANY HOPES and GREAT PROMISE. We should recognize that to be especially true with Jesus. However, the road to glory was filled with varied scenes of joy as well as sorrow.

When I think of mothers I see a STRENGTH OF LOVE THAT RUNS DEEP. When everyone else abandons (sometimes sadly even the fathers), A MOTHER REMAINS. A mother will be there EVEN THROUGH THE TOUGH MOMENTS. A sight that might otherwise repulse a mother, will draw her every attention when it is her own child. Even in a situation when she has to acknowledge her child has done wrong, it is still her child.

When a child experiences something, it is experienced by that child’s mother as well. This is true whether that be joy or pain. When I wrestled in high school, my mother did not care to go to too many of the matches because she felt worn out following my turn on the mat. She would twist and turn with the movements I made on the mat perhaps in an attempt to help me. Was the experience of such feelings any different for Mary when Jesus was on the cross?

John recorded…
“(25) but STANDING BY THE CROSS OF JESUS WERE HIS MOTHER and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. (26) When JESUS SAW HIS MOTHER and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ (27) Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.” (John 19:25-27 ESV)

What a horrible sight it must have been for Mary. Jesus had been kept up and tortured through the night. He was being publicly ridiculed. He was enduring a most tortuous death. She probably felt his stinging wounds from the crown of thorns on His head upon her own brow. She probably felt within herself the difficulty that came with each breath she watched Jesus take as He would push Himself up on the nails through His feet. Her muscles probably tightened with each attempt of Jesus to move. Having looked into those eyes as an infant, she could probably read the hurt and the pain in His eyes as He hung there on the cross.

When Jesus, as an infant, was presented at the Temple, remember what Simeon had prophesied.

“(34) And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (35) (AND A SWORD WILL PIERCE THROUGH YOUR OWN SOUL ALSO), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.’” (Luke 2:34-35 ESV)

Oh how her soul must have been pierced as Mary stood before the cross. But she was there. Where else would she be? Though Jesus was Deity and the Son of God, HE WAS HER SON TOO. So, there she stood next to the beloved Apostle John, at the foot of the cross, looking up at her dying son.

And what do our eyes see? Note some more words from Simeon when Jesus was presented at the Temple.

“(29) ‘Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; (30) FOR MY EYES HAVE SEEN YOUR SALVATION (31) that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, (32) a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.’” (Luke 2:29-32 ESV)

Through the darkness and gloom of ungodly actions in this world, may our eyes also see our salvation in Jesus. We may not fully understand all of the scenes of life, but we have the assurance of brighter things because of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God Most High.

There is perhaps one more thought worth considering. While Jesus was in the midst of providing the solution to the world’s greatest need (salvation from sin), He took a moment to consider His mother. Jesus’ concern reveals the value of honoring and caring for one’s mother. And so it was that John, the beloved disciple, took Mary, the mother of Jesus, into his own home.

Jesus and Mary. In the bond of that mother/son relationship was a common concern and love for each other. Family is an institution of God, not man. May we do our part in keeping it holy and honorable before Him.

Have a great day KNOWING THE POWER OF EMPATHY IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS!

Through A Mother's Eyes! (part 1 of 2)

Tomorrow is marked on the calendar as “Mothers Day!” How sad if it takes a date on the calendar for mothers to be honored for the glorious work God has called them to fulfill. One day a year is not adequate recognition for the sacrificial way in which most mothers live and have lived.

Motherhood holds a blessedness from God in ways I as a man may never fully comprehend. It seems that God created mothers with the resilience to stand by their children even when life situations are difficult to understand. This is no more true of mothers than it was with Mary whom God had chosen to bring the Messiah into this world. I have spent this past week reflecting on four moments in the life of Mary that I will be sharing in tomorrow’s sermon here in Port Townsend, Washington USA. Let me share two of them with you; one today and, Lord Willing, one tomorrow.

Though each birth of an infant may seem routine to the doctors, nurses, or midwives who assist the mother in this grand event, this is not the case with the mother. To her, each new birth is UNIQUE and SPECIAL. Where some might see ugliness, a mother SEES BEAUTY. Where some may not see value, a mother SEES SOMETHING TO BE TREASURED. Where some might see hyperactivity, a mother SEES CREATIVITY AND ABILITY to accomplish. Where some might walk away, A MOTHER IS DRAWN TOWARD. Where some see just a baby, a mother SEES ONE WHO WILL CHANGE THE WORLD!

The conception of Jesus was an EXCEPTIONAL OCCURRENCE. (Luke 1:34-35) But immediately following our Lord’s birth and as He began to grow, the attention and statements of others started filling this mother’s heart with SPECIAL MEMORIES. Following the shepherd’s visit and their report of the appearing and message of the angels, we read that “Mary TREASURED UP all these things, PONDERING THEM IN HER HEART.” (Luke 2:19 ESV) When Jesus was presented at the Temple following the days of purification according to the law (Luke 2:22-23) they were met by Simeon who made remarks of which both Joseph and Mary “MARVELED AT WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT HIM.” (Luke 2:33) Then, at the age of twelve, when Joseph and Mary found Jesus in the Temple sitting among the teachers who were amazed at His understanding and answers (Luke 2:46-47), after Jesus responded that He must be in His Father’s house, again we read that “HIS MOTHER TREASURED UP ALL THESE THINGS IN HER HEART.” (Luke 2:51 ESV)

MOMENTS to a mother BECOME MEMORIES for a lifetime. The events associated with the lives of their children become A TREASURE HOUSE of memories. Jesus lived a life of PURE BEAUTY in word and deed. He was and is truly to be TREASURED as SPECIAL. He came and BROUGHT WONDROUS CHANGE to this world. My world. Your world.

And so Mary watched Him grow.
“And Jesus increased IN WISDOM and IN STATURE and IN FAVOR WITH GOD AND MAN.” (Luke 2:52 ESV)

How are we continuing to grow? Let us mature in the likeness of Jesus, for this is the way we honor God as well as the mothers who brought us into this world.

Have a great day KNOWING THE TREASURE OF THE RELATIONSHIP!

Home!

A little girl was asked where her home was and she replied, “Where Mother is.” Here was one who viewed home not in relation to a place, but rather to a relationship and wherever that relationship took her, that was home. A contrast to this view has been expressed in the statement, “Many modern homes are merely filling stations.” [source: sentence sermons] This second description appears to portray a home as merely a place where one goes to eat (and perhaps sleep), but most of the time is rather spent elsewhere.

Home! What is our view of it? Is it a place to get or a PLACE TO BE? For home to be viewed as a PLACE TO BE we must not only have a desire to be there, but also recognize our own contribution to making it be a place where there is a desire to be present. We need to do our part to create a sense of homeness.

Note Jesus’ words in response to a question by Judas (not Iscariot).
“Jesus answered him, ‘If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and WE WILL COME TO HIM AND MAKE OUR HOME WITH HIM.” (John 14:23 ESV)

We sing a hymn with the refrain, “Anywhere is home, If Christ, my Lord, is there.” [by John M. Henson and Homer F. Morris, © 1927] As the little girl mentioned above felt that home was where her mother was, do we sense that at homeness in our relationship with Jesus? We are to be open to being that home for Him; the PLACE TO BE, regardless of geographic location! It is the closeness He desires. What an amazing blessing to realize how Deity wants to be at home with us.

Though it was noted negatively above, there is a positive sense in which this homeness may be associated as a “filling station”. Note that Jesus also mentioned “If anyone loves me, he will KEEP MY WORD,…” Homes may be filled with lots of words, but our life is to be filled with His! His Word is to be at home with us, dwelling in us richly. (Colossians 3:16)

Are we allowing our life to be that PLACE TO BE? Where Christ is! Where the Father is! Where the Word is! A home where a heart of righteousness has taken up residence! There’s no better way to keep the home fires burning, creating a perpetual sense of welcomeness that will stretch on into eternity. May we, in humility, keep an open door for the Lord.

Have a great day BEING A HUMBLED AND HOLY HABITATION!

Our Standing!

ALONE, we stand condemned because of our sins. ALONE, we stand incompetent because within ourselves we have limited resources and wisdom. ALONE, we are but a speck among the myriads of people who have lived through the ages. ALONE, we might as well sit down. But we want to stand and we want to have a good standing. We must therefore understand where ALONE that standing must be.

Paul encouraged the church at Rome by noting where they were standing.
“(1) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. (2) THROUGH HIM WE HAVE ALSO OBTAINED ACCESS BY FAITH INTO THIS GRACE IN WHICH WE STAND, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1-2 ESV)

It is IN CHRIST ALONE that we can stand. It is Jesus Who has made the difference for us because it is through Him we are able to stand in the grace of God. Whoever does not believe in Him stands condemned already. (John 3:18) Jesus ALONE is the access we have to the Father. (John 14:6) We must understand that our sufficiency and competency come from God. (2 Corinthians 3:5-6) And with Him we are not ALONE.

The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU.’ (6) So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:5-6 ESV)

Oh, what confidence we can have because of what God has made possible through the Lord Jesus Christ. He has provided the means for us to be able to stand in God’s grace and by the power of Christ’s blood our standing before God can be one of blamelessness. (Jude 24) As we continue to stand for the truth of God’s Word, taking on the spiritual armor God has provided so that we can stand firm (Ephesians 6:13), let us be courageous, knowing we are not standing ALONE!

Have a great day STANDING UP BECAUSE OF AND FOR JESUS!

Mighty Fine!

When we are asked how things are going we may simply reply, “Fine!” Perhaps there are days when things are going exceptionally well and our reply might be, “Things are mighty fine!” There are situations we may find ourselves in and declare, “I’m fine with that.” There are also relationships we share that have been well developed of which we again might declare “I’m fine with that.” What do we mean when we say “fine”? Do we merely mean “okay” or are we using the word to imply “excellent in quality”? Would that not be truly “mighty fine”? The word fine is also used with reference to purity. That sounds “mighty fine” as well when we are talking about our life. With our life placed in the HANDS OF GOD do we have a faith that is able to declare that life is “mighty fine” because of that relationship?

Note David’s encouraging outlook as he considered his relationship with God.
“(14) But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘YOU ARE MY GOD.’ (15) MY TIMES ARE IN YOUR HAND; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!” (Psalm 31:14-15 ESV)

David’s trust was in God. He was “mighty fine” leaving his life IN GOD’S HANDS. He knew that was always best because God was more merciful than man. (note 2 Samuel 24:14)

Perhaps the following little rhyme is a good declaration of our faith in the relationship we have developed with God: GOD IS MINE AND I AM FINE! For God to truly be our God and knowing the might of His Sovereign power, have we developed a sense about life that can help us declare that IN HIS HANDS we truly are “mighty fine”? Let us also be encouraged that as fine as we are in the HANDS OF GOD now things are going to get even finer; even more mighty finer than we might imagine. With God as our God He has great things in store for us. I’m “mighty fine” with that. Are you?

Have a great day BEING REFINED IN GOD’S GOOD HANDS!

But Busy About What?

We probably all have pretty busy schedules. Some of that business is hopefully involvement in work for the Lord. If we are too busy for that then we are downright too busy and need to reprioritize the things we are doing.

It has been noted that Satan loves to keep Christians so over busy in “the Lord’s work” that the Lord doesn’t get an opportunity to tell them what it is He wants them to do. Think about that notion for a moment. Consider what it is you are doing in the Name of the Lord and where the idea has actually originated. Is it always the Lord’s work that is called “the Lord’s work”?

Jesus cautioned…
“(21) Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, BUT THE ONE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER who is in heaven. (22) On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy IN YOUR NAME, and cast out demons IN YOUR NAME, and do many mighty works IN YOUR NAME?’ (23) And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” (Matthew 7:21-23 ESV)

The Lord mentioned some good things being done in His Name and the context makes it sound like they were not being done for self-glory. However, the error was in that what was being done was apparently self-chosen rather than God-chosen since Jesus’ emphasis was on doing the FATHER’S WILL. It is therefore possible to be involved in many good works and still not be right in the eyes of God. To acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus means HIS WILL is to be supreme.

Are we merely choosing and doing and then putting the Lord’s Name on our works in an attempt to validate them? Or are we truly seeking to understand what HIS WILL is? More than busyness and even busyness that we have attached the Lord’s Name to, is the need to understand what it is GOD ACTUALLY WILLS for us to be doing. That is why we need to keep studying God’s Word sincerely seeking to be sure of what the HIS WILL is.

Paul exhorted…
“(15) LOOK CAREFULLY THEN HOW YOU WALK, not as unwise but AS WISE, (16) making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. (17) Therefore do not be foolish, but UNDERSTAND WHAT THE WILL OF THE LORD IS.” (Ephesians 5:15-17 ESV)

Perhaps we could also rightly say that we should look carefully then how we “work” so that our works, like our walk, may all be done wisely. Let us seek to find out what the LORD’S WILL is so that we can be involved in it. If we are going to be eager to get busy, let it be about the LORD’S WILL! Acknowledging HIS WILL will bring Divine acknowledgement to our works.

Have a great day WILLING TO DO WHAT GOD WILLS TO BE DONE!

being Useful!

I think we would all like to be considered useful for something. It provides a good feeling when we know we have been able to make at least a somewhat SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO LIFE in this world. However, we should guard against feeling we are either too old or too young for being made useful. For example, consider Noah who was six hundred years old when he entered the ark (Genesis 7:6); God having given him something useful to do and this world was given a fresh start. Noah had refused to get caught up in the ungodly direction that marked the world of his day. (Genesis 6:5) Then consider Josiah who was only eight years old when he began to reign as king over Judah. (2 Kings 22:1) His reign followed on the heals of two very wicked kings (Manasseh and Amon, 2 Kings 21), but by his eighteenth year (2 Kings 22:3) Josiah began leading great reforms for the kingdom of Judah, bringing the people back to following the commands of God. What made Josiah such a good king was that he "turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might." (2 Kings 23:25)

As we consider our usefulness as members of the household of God, we should be mindful of anything that might detract from the usefulness God wishes to make of our life.

Paul exhorted Timothy.
"(20) Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. (21) Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, SET APART AS HOLY, USEFUL TO THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE, READY FOR EVERY GOOD WORK." (2 Timothy 2:20-21 ESV)

Now, we may never build even a small boat (let alone an ark) or sit on a throne over a nation. Nevertheless, a life marked by a refusal to get caught up in the status quo of the world, but instead maintains an openness to the Will of God is the life GOD CAN AND WILL WORK THROUGH IN SIGNIFICANT WAYS. We might not be a rescuer of life from a flood or bring the attention of a nation back to God, but we can SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT those around us one soul at a time. Just as God was mindful of one life (Noah's) in the midst of a wicked world, for us to draw the attention of even one soul to God is the greatest and MOST SIGNIFICANT usefulness toward which to put our life. Between the history of the lives of Josiah and Noah, let us be encouraged that anywhere between the ages of eight and six hundred God can provide something SIGNIFICANT and worthwhile to do. May we experience the joy of being used by Him.

Have a great day LIVING USEFUL TO THE MASTER!

Temptation!

After starting a new diet, an individual changed their usual driving route to work to avoid passing their favorite bakery. However, one day they accidentally drove by the bakery and as they approached they could see a host of goodies in the window. Feeling perhaps that it was no accident, they prayed, “Lord, it’s up you. If you want me to have any of those delicious goodies, create a parking place for me directly in front of the bakery.” And sure enough, on the eighth time around the block, there it was! “God is so good!”

Do we ever feel that if we could just stay in the right place we wouldn’t have to be faced with temptations? Though we should avoid places where we know we would be tempted, remember temptation came to Adam and Eve in the midst of paradise (Genesis 3:1-13) while Jesus faced it in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:1-11) They caved, but Jesus did not. Temptation has more to do with what is going on within us and that is why we must work on maintaining a FOCUS that sets our DESIRES on that which is right.

James explained the temptation process as follows:
“(13) Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. (14) But EACH person IS TEMPTED WHEN he is LURED AND ENTICED BY his OWN DESIRE. (15) Then DESIRE WHEN IT HAS CONCEIVED GIVES BIRTH TO SIN, and sin when it is FULLY GROWN BRINGS FORTH DEATH.” (James 1:13-15 ESV)

Something is only a temptation if the DESIRE is there. Once we have been enticed we can easily be led on down the pathway James described. We are not alone in facing temptation. Temptation and the need to keep the DESIRES in check is common to all. Our need is to keep the FOCUS on that which is right and holy. That is how Jesus responded to the devil’s attempts to tempt Him; with each temptation FOCUSING on what Scripture declared.

God truly is good in His provision with regard to the temptations of life. Paul cautioned and encouraged…

“(12) Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. (13) No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. GOD IS FAITHFUL, and he will NOT let you be TEMPTED BEYOND YOUR ABILITY, but WITH THE TEMPTATION HE WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE WAY OF ESCAPE, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:12-13 ESV)

Rather than trusting too confidently in ourselves, let us keep the FOCUS on God and His Will as we look for the “way of escape” He will provide. However, remember God will not push us through it. We must choose to use the way He opens for us. May that be our strongest DESIRE when facing temptation.

Have a great day FINDING VICTORY OVER THE BATTLE WITHIN!

The Relationship!

It is not fun to walk with someone with whom we are struggling in our relationship. In fact it can be downright uncomfortable. Conversation is awkward. Spatial distance tends to increase. Perhaps attempts are made to shrink away from having any contact at all because such makes us feel so uneasy knowing the relationship is not right. Unfortunately this is the sad picture of many relationships in the world today. Even sadder is when this depicts the relationship between mankind and God.

Adam and Eve had a very special relationship with God in the garden. There was an EXTREME CLOSENESS. Perhaps we would agree that such a relationship ought to accompany a picture of life in paradise. However, when God’s command was disobeyed and the forbidden tree was eaten from, the relationship became uncomfortable.

We read…
“(8) And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and THE MAN AND HIS WIFE HID THEMSELVES FROM THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD GOD among the trees of the garden. (9) But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ (10) And he said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I WAS AFRAID, because I was naked, and I HID MYSELF.’” (Genesis 3:8-10 ESV)

The relationship was not right. The EAGER DESIRE TO BE IN GOD’S PRESENCE was gone. There was a feeling of shame and therefore an attempt to hide. However, God could not be avoided. He could not be hidden from. As they tried to hide their nakedness from God, there was a need to understand how exposed all truly are.

The Hebrew writer noted…
“And no creature is hidden from his sight, but ALL ARE NAKED AND EXPOSED TO THE EYES OF HIM TO WHOM WE MUST GIVE ACCOUNT.” (Hebrews 4:13 ESV)

When we don’t feel like praying it is good to consider why. When we do not desire to read the Scriptures, perhaps we should take a close look at our relationship with God. Is there something about it that is not right? Are we avoiding Him? Are we distancing ourselves? Has our confidence in approaching God (Hebrews 4:16) been undermined?

Regarding the relationship to our Lord, John exhorted…
“And now, little children, ABIDE IN HIM, so that WHEN HE APPEARS WE MAY HAVE CONFIDENCE AND NOT SHRINK FROM HIM IN SHAME AT HIS COMING.” (1 John 2:28 ESV)

Through Christ, God has made it possible for us to draw into a CLOSE RELATIONSHIP with Him. (Hebrews 7:19) Striving to walk in a right relationship with the Lord now will keep us from feeling the need to shrink back when He comes. He wants us to experience the joy of the relationship. (Romans 5:11) He has made it possible to experience peace in the relationship. (Romans 5:1) To continue walking in a right relationship with Him presently leads us toward the day when we will walk on into the eternal paradise of God. May we maintain an EAGER DESIRE FOR LIVING IN HIS PRESENCE!

Have a great day CHERISHING THE CLOSENESS!

Hand-Me-Downs!

Hand-me-downs! Do you get excited about them? Have they been viewed as a blessing to you? Or do you feel that if you receive them you might be poor or people will at least think so? I received many hand-me-downs as I was growing up and appreciated them. These hand-me-downs came from my older brother or from family friends with children who had outgrown but not worn out the clothes. I even eventually received some hand-me-downs from my father. My wife and her sister passed baby clothes back and forth as each new baby came onto the scene within each of our families. As our two boys (we also have a daughter) began to surpass me in height, I even got hand-me-downs from them. (Or would you call those hand-me-ups?) Even in recent years I have gratefully accepted clothes from others that were used, but not used up. Yes, hand-me-downs have been a wonderful blessing in my life.

Jesus encouraged…
“BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3 ESV)

The “poor in spirit” are those who recognize their spiritual need and are open to receiving whatever is needed. Jesus said the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Do we sense our spiritual need so as to receive what will satisfy it? How blessed we are when there is openness to the FAITH OF THE SCRIPTURES being handed down to us.

In God’s desire for FAITHFULNESS to be PERPETUATED among His people, He commanded the following during the days of Moses:
“(6) And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. (7) You shall TEACH THEM DILIGENTLY TO YOUR CHILDREN, and shall talk of them WHEN YOU SIT IN YOUR HOUSE, and WHEN YOU WALK BY THE WAY, and WHEN YOU LIE DOWN, and WHEN YOU RISE.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

The COMMANDS OF GOD were to be handed down from generation to generation. They were to be talked about through the daily activities of life. Each generation was to be prepared to do the same so that GOD’S COMMANDS would become the basis of life for each succeeding generation. Without the handing down of GOD’S COMMANDS it would not take long for a generation to arise “who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.” (Judges 2:10) Sadly that too often became the case.

When Jesus gave His disciples the Great Commission, He did so with its perpetuation in mind. Jesus said…
“(19) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

As Jesus commissioned the disciples, what He commanded them to teach included those being taught to understand they in turn were to PASS THE GOSPEL MESSAGE ON to others who would go teach and baptize others who would then go teach and baptize others who would then go teach and baptize others and on and on the GOOD NEWS OF JESUS would be handed down to bring changes to the lives of those who received it.

Remember Timothy who was sharing A FAITH that had been handed down to him from his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. (2 Timothy 1:5) It became A FAITH that was alive in Timothy; a faith Paul was encouraging Timothy to continue proclaiming.

One generation can have a dynamic impact one way or the other on the next generation. May we continue to be open to receiving the TRUTH OF THE SCRIPTURES and do our part of handing down A PURE FAITH to the next generation. When it comes to the Gospel of Jesus, one size fits all and will never go out of style.

Have a great day BEING PART OF GOD’S PERPETUAL BLESSING!

A Happy Place!

Is your world (the sphere of activities and relationships close around you) a happy place? Is your life a happy place? Is there understanding with regard to your own role in the finding of a happy place? Are the true elements of happiness properly perceived?

First consider what it is that creates unhappiness in this life. Is it not things such as deception, guilt, selfishness, death and disappointment, etc.? What then are some elements that help create happiness? Is it not such things as the joy of having served to meet other’s needs, knowing we are right regardless of what others say, knowing we have been forgiven, knowing that ultimately God will work things out, etc.? Could we say that happiness is a state of HEAVEN IN THE HEART? To have a heart of Heaven and toward Heaven is that which will draw us into HEAVENLY LIVING now. That is HOLY LIVING; living that makes us different from the world. It is such an aim that provides a peace that surpasses understanding and may even cause the world to wonder how we can retain a sense of joy and peace when there may be a lack of it around us.

Someone has said, “If it were possible to enter heaven void of holiness, it would be no place of happiness.” [source: sentence sermons]

As John described the new Jerusalem, he stated…
“But NOTHING UNCLEAN WILL EVER ENTER IT, NOR ANYONE WHO DOES WHAT IS DETESTABLE OR FALSE, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (Revelation 21:27 ESV)

Truly, how happy could Heaven be if it contained the detestable deeds and falsehoods of this realm? Where God is, is a place of HOLINESS! And those who will be brought into His presence for eternity will be those who have been made HOLY by the blood of Jesus. (Hebrews 10:10 & 14) Having been set free from our sins we receive SANCTIFICATION, the end of which is eternal life. (Romans 6:22)

Peter exhorted…
“(14) AS OBEDIENT CHILDREN, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, (15) but AS HE who called you IS HOLY, YOU ALSO BE HOLY IN ALL YOUR CONDUCT, (16) since it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”” (1 Peter 1:14-16 ESV)

May we find happiness now in focusing on the HOLINESS of God and thus experience a taste of the Heavenly happiness that is to come! By striving to spread a little HEAVEN here as we live to please God, hopefully we can gain the attention of those around us to come to know the Source of true and lasting happiness. We may not be happy about all things here, but the day is coming when happiness of the most pervasive kind is all there will be. I want to be there, don’t you? Praise God for His provision to make it possible!

Have a great day LIVING WITH A HAPPY HOLY HEART!

Prepared For What Went!

The man of God went to the people and he declared, “Behold a man went camping in the mountains, but upon arriving at his picturesque campsite, he realized he had forgotten his tent and sleeping bag. Then, lo, he took a trip into the mountains on another day, for the powder was just right for skiing, but alas he had forgotten his skis. This same man, upon hearing that the surf was up, hurried off to the beach to catch a wave, but when he arrived he found that the surfboard was still at home. And again, on a sunny afternoon, he went off to play a round of golf, only to arrive and remember his golf clubs were still in the garage.”

Then all the people responded, “How foolish for this man to have gone to all those activities unprepared with the very things vital to that for which he had gone!”

And the man of God looked at the people and asked, “And why is it that you call it Bible study and Bible camp when you do not take your Bibles with you to open, to read, and to study, making certain what is being taught is in accordance with God’s Word? Why do you not yourselves go prepared for that for which you have gone?”

And the people had no response for they knew the man of God was right. Verily, how much more important than the EQUIPMENT for camping, skiing, surfing, or golf, is the Bible in hand for the study of what matters for eternity!

Perhaps we might sometimes think that we can always borrow a Bible or there will be one in the pew or the classroom. However, there is no substitute for a Bible of our own that we can mark and take notes in and become familiar with where things are on each page. Like a warrior with a sword, we need to become well trained with the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17 ESV)

Remember…
“(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) THAT THE MAN OF GOD MAY BE competent, EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)

Don’t forget about the most important EQUIPMENT relating to the activities of life now and for eternity. God’s Word has value for all things. Let us not leave home without it!

Have a great day KEEPING PREPARED WITH GOD’S WORD!

God's Protection!

God created Adam and Eve and they lived in the beautiful garden paradise He had prepared for them. There God provided for their needs. There they lived in safety. Blessed by God, what more could they desire? As the relationship began between Creator and created, God desired to be TRUSTED and obeyed. After all, He, the Creator of all that is good (Gen. 1:4, 10,12,18,21,25,31), knows what is truly good for man.

Note the one limitation God placed on man in the garden.
“(15) The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (16) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, (17) BUT OF THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL YOU SHALL NOT EAT, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’” (Genesis 2:15-17 ESV)

What was there to not understand regarding this command? Of all the trees in the garden that were good for food, all could be enjoyed except one. There was freedom to pick from every other tree that was there except for this one of which God was very specific. How difficult could it be to leave one tree alone while savoring the sweetness of all the rest?

From the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the fruit was not to be eaten. To me it appears that God was trying to protect man’s innocence. Some seem to think the only way to distinguish and to understand sin is to experience it. That is not true. By learning and maintaining a focus on what is right and true, whenever confronted with sin we can know what is wrong. Rather than man seeking that knowledge through his own experience, God seeks for man to TRUST HIM FOR THE KNOWLEDGE.

When it comes to seeking things out our own way we are most likely to stumble and fall into sin. We are not always as strong and wise as we might think. God has provided His commands because HE KNOWS what is good and what is not good. Regardless of what command of His we might be focusing on, this should be kept in mind. God seeks to bless us. God seeks to protect us. God seeks to spare us the things we would bring upon ourselves when His Will is departed from. We don’t have to conduct research on evil in order to faithfully follow in His Way.

As we enjoy the sweetness of the things God encourages us to freely partake of in life, let us continue to TRUST what He has declared to be good and true so that our innocence may be safeguarded. That is the blessing He seeks for us to experience.

Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR THE LIFE PARAMETERS HE HAS SET!

Unfading Beauty!

The first day of May is celebrated by some as a Spring time festival called “May Day.” Besides dancing around a decorated “maypole”, one of the “May Day” traditions has been to place fresh flowers on the doorstep of a neighbor or friend, knock, and leave before they open the door to the delight of a colorful bouquet.

Though I believe every season has its own beauty, the many colors of the flowers is a beauty hard to surpass. What wondrous colors God has sprinkled over this globe on which we live! Tulip fields appear as a sea of bright colors waving in the breeze. Sunshiny yellow daffodils. Bluebells and hyacinth. And the list goes on of the awakening taking place in the gardens of Spring. To behold the beauty and smell the sweetness of flowers has the power to calm the spirit, refresh the focus, and remind us that life continues. Such a glorious part of God’s creation. Even Solomon in all his wealth and majesty was not dressed as gloriously as the flowers of the field. (Matthew 6:28-29) However, as the time passes, what do we see? Are we not reminded that as the seasons cycle, so do the colors on which we gaze? We appreciate the beautiful blossoms while they are here, but the time of their blooming passes.

Recognizing the way it is with the flowers of the field, where do we find the seed of germination that brings about lasting beauty and glory? Peter, reminding his readers of the new life that was theirs in Christ, used a quotation from Isaiah (Isaiah 40:6-8) as he pointed to that which remains constant. It is something thoroughly beautiful and wholly good.

We read…
“(22) Having purified your souls by your obedience to THE TRUTH for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, (23) since you have been born again, NOT OF PERISHABLE SEED BUT OF IMPERISHABLE, through THE LIVING AND ABIDING WORD OF GOD; (24) for ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and THE FLOWER FALLS, (25) BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD REMAINS FOREVER.’ And this word is the GOOD NEWS that was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:22-25 ESV)

The truth! The Word of the Lord! The “imperishable” seed! The “good news” of Jesus! Though the beautiful flowers are here for but a season, GOD’S WORD is forever! It is the constant we can look to for calming the spirit. His promises are able to refresh our focus with the reminder there is an eternity that awaits us; a unending season of beautiful and eternal glory.

The beauty and freshness of Spring can be a very uplifting time of year. May we appreciate and enjoy the flowers, acknowledging them as one of God’s gifts in this realm. But as they spring up, opening their blossoms toward Heaven, let our focus also be directed Heavenward toward the Creator of life (and LIFE ETERNAL) and the Revealer of ETERNAL WISDOM by which to live our lives. Though the flowers fade, faith’s blossom can continue to beautifully and fragrantly remain. Oh, how sweet it can be!

Have a great day KEEPING FAITH’S FLOWER VIBRANTLY BLOOMING!
