Second Opinion?

Sometimes when an individual is diagnosed with an ailment that requires serious treatment, a second opinion is sought out to be sure the diagnosis is correct and the course of treatment suggested is the right option. When it comes to LIFE we can’t be too careful. However, there are also those who self-diagnose what ails them and then search for any doctor who will agree with them. This is also the way of some when it comes to spiritual matters.

Someone has said, “He who holds false doctrine holds it first in his own thinking and then seeks it in the Bible as a second source.” [source: sermon sentences]

Do we look to the Scriptures merely for passages that appear to support what we think, or do we truly seek to come to understand the Mind and Will of God? God’s Word is worthy of being the first and final word on the issues of life. His diagnosis of life’s spiritual ailments is true. His cure for the sin-sick soul is right. After all, He is the Creator of LIFE and knows what it takes to properly sustain LIFE. When it comes to our spiritual LIFE we cannot be too careful. We must genuinely seek to learn the truths of God so that we can let go of opinion and base life on the facts He has revealed.

To whom shall we go? Who has the answers? Though Jesus spoke words that He referred to as being “spirit and life” ( John 6:63) not everyone believed. Some had great difficulty accepting what He said. That is still true of many today. However, His words must be reckoned with because they are what will someday judge us. ( John 12:48)

After many turned away from Jesus, He asked the Twelve if they wanted to go away as well, and we read…

“(68) Simon Peter answered him, ‘LORD, TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE, (69) and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.’” ( John 6:68-69 ESV)

Have we also believed? Have we also come to know? Have we been drawn to recognize what true LIFE is because we have allowed our Lord’s words to impact our LIFE? Accepting His word removes us from the fear of judgment, causing us to pass from death to LIFE. ( John 5:24) May we daily be open to the words He has spoken.

Have a great day ABIDING DAILY IN THE LIFE GIVING WORD!
