The Cutting Edge!

We hear a lot today about “cutting edge” technology and it is amazing how quickly some things are changing. But in the midst of all that, there are still some struggles in the world that do not change. In spite of all the technological advances which continue to benefit life in the world there is still much conflict between individuals. Quite often, at the root of the conflict is a “cutting edge” that needs to be avoided.

Solomon wrote:
“There is one whose RASH WORDS ARE LIKE SWORD THRUSTS, but the TONGUE OF THE WISE BRINGS HEALING.” (Proverbs 12:18 ESV)

Words can cut very deeply. They can damage! They can scar! They can destroy!

As I began today's message, a story that was shared with us recently via e-mail came to mind. ( I do not know the author, but if you do, please let me know so I can give them credit.)

---------------
THE FENCE
There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Show your friends how much you care.
---------------

Think about it. Let’s consider what we say. May those around us not receive the “cutting edge” of our tongue. Just as we would not be reckless with a sharp knife, let us not be reckless with our tongues. Rather than words that pierce, let us extend WORDS OF HEALING. In a world plagued with selfish ambition and conflict, we may be noted as being involved in “cutting edge” humanity. In this we will be shown wise!

Have a great day BRINGING HEALING INTO THE LIVES OF OTHERS!

Our Slant On Life!

Not everyone has the same slant on life. All people are not INCLINED toward the same things. As we look around us, perhaps we are often struck by how what seems to be most on the INCLINE is the DECLINE of morals. What is the INCLINE and DECLINE associated with our life? What direction are we moving on the slant?

After the temple was built and the ark of the covenant was brought in, the glory of the Lord filled the temple. (1 Kings 8:10-11). In Solomon’s prayer of dedication he acknowledged that the highest heaven could not contain God, “much less this house that I have built.” (1 Kings 8:27) However, the temple being the place where God’s Name would be (1 Kings 8:29) was to be focused toward when prayers were offered as God would listen in heaven, His dwelling place. (1 Kings 8:30) At the conclusion of Solomon’s prayer, he stood, blessed the people assembled, and exhorted them toward faithfulness to God.

Solomon began…
“(56) Blessed be the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. NOT ONE WORD HAS FAILED OF ALL HIS GOOD PROMISE, which he spoke by Moses his servant. (57) The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. May he not leave us or forsake us, (58) THAT HE MAY INCLINE OUR HEARTS TO HIM, to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his rules, which he commanded our fathers.” (1 Kings 8:56-58)

Solomon continued exhorting the people toward wholehearted devotion to God. If the heart of the people INCLINED toward worldliness would it not seem appropriate for the blessings of God to be on the DECLINE; for Him to “leave” or “forsake” His people? On the other hand, to INCLINE the heart toward God would put faithlessness on the DECLINE and faithfulness on the INCLINE. Since God had been faithful to all His good promises, faithfulness to Him should have been seen as the most appropriate response.

The psalmist prayed…
“INCLINE MY HEART TO YOUR TESTIMONIES, and NOT TO SELFISH GAIN!” (Psalm 119:36 ESV)

To what are we most INCLINED -- our stuff or God’s? In a sense to be INCLINED toward our own selfish ways is to DECLINE the blessings God desires to give. May we instead DECLINE the cheap thrills of worldly living and INCLINE our hearts wholly to God so that we may continually receive the richest and truest blessings He is delighted to make ours. Yes, God, INCLINE our hearts wholly to You!

Have a great day MAKING LIFE’S SLANT AN UPWARD MOTION!

Paparazzi Preparedness!

I love to look at PICTURES of children. It seems the older we get the less we want our PICTURE taken. That’s not the case with most children. When they know a camera is around they are drawn to it with as big a smile and as much cuteness as they can muster. Then there are the times some pretty funny stuff is captured on film when they are not looking. Some of those things have earned families big money by having their videos aired on the “America’s Funniest Videos” television program.

I do not envy the lives of celebrities and other famous people. It is very difficult for them to live private lives. Whether they want it or not there are those who are always prepared to snap a PICTURE. Just one click of the camera at an opportune time and that moment becomes immortalized. And not all the PICTURES that end up being published in newspapers or magazines are flattering. Sometimes I wonder if the “paparazzi” (free lance photographers who aggressively pursue celebrities for the purpose of taking candid photographs) following them around are actually looking for the shot that might show these celebrities at their worst. Since it is so hard for the famous (and infamous) to hide from all the cameras, the pressure is on to try to be at their best at all times.

Someone has said, “All the world is a camera: look pleasant please!” [source: sentence sermons]

As we try to live the Christian life there are those who may try to accusingly catch us at our worst. We are not perfect people, being as much in need of God’s grace as the rest of the world. However, is our aim to always be at our best, demonstrating that though we sometimes struggle, we still sincerely accept and keep God’s Word as the standard for all of life? We may not always be aware when others are looking to see what our Christian faith truly means to us. What PICTURES are developing as the eyes of the world are upon us?

Note the manner of living Paul encouraged.
“(14) Do ALL THINGS without grumbling or questioning, (15) that you may be BLAMELESS AND INNOCENT, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you SHINE AS LIGHTS IN THE WORLD, (16) holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.” (Philippians 2:14-16 ESV)

Note also Peter’s exhortation and the hopeful effect.
“(11) Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. (12) KEEP YOUR CONDUCT among the Gentiles HONORABLE, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they MAY SEE YOUR GOOD DEEDS AND GLORIFY GOD on the day of visitation.” (1 Peter 2:11-12 ESV)

As we live conscious of the many eyes upon us, let us be mindful of the PICTURE we are leaving to be captured. There is no need to look around to see who’s watching if we simply decide to always live to glorify God. Doing our best to live approved of God (2 Timothy 2:15) will provide ample opportunity for images captured of our life that are worthy of framing. Consistently living to His glory is the best way to be “paparazzi” prepared.

Have a great day LIVING A PORTRAIT OF GODLINESS!

Inner Strength!

In Paul’s letter to Titus, we find the reference to being “self-controlled” (ESV) five times within the first two chapters. It is used in association with the elders (1:8), the older men (2:2), the young women (2:5), the younger men (2:6), and the way we are all to live in response to the grace of God. (2:11-12) Self-control is not based on reliance on environment or outward rules and restrictions, but on a strength developed within.

A couple days ago we noted “superpowers” and the super ability of David as he retained his trust in God. Such was demonstrated in the many victories accredited to David. However, there was another strength of David that strikes me every time I read about his life and that is the times he demonstrated marvelous self-control.

Again and again David had to flee and hide away because Saul sought to take his life. However, though David knew Saul’s intent, when David had the opportunity to kill Saul, he did not take it. When Saul came into a cave in which David and his men were hiding, David was encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity, but he would not. (1 Samuel 24:4-7) When Saul again pursued David, David was once more given the opportunity while Saul slept in the midst of his men, but again spared Saul’s life. (1 Samuel 26:8-9) Each time David was content to LET GOD deal with Saul. (1 Samuel 24:15; 26:10) David was unwilling to put out his hand against “the Lord’s anointed.” (1 Samuel 24:6; 26:9 & 11)

Later on, after Saul had died and David became king, there were still situations faced which showed remarkable “self-control” on the part of David. When David’s son Absalom conspired to take over the kingdom, David fled and as he and his men were going out, Shimei (a man of the house of Saul) pelted David and all those with him with stones and cursed at him. (2 Samuel 16:5-8 & 13) Though David had the authority as king, he did not allow anyone to kill Shimei (2 Samuel 16:9-11), but was content to LET GOD do what He chose regarding the situation. (2 Samuel 16:12) Then, following the death of Absalom, when David and his men returned, Shimei hurried to meet them and fell before them to ask forgiveness for his earlier actions toward him. (2 Samuel 19:16-20) Though Abishai felt Shimei should be put to death for having cursed the Lord’s anointed (2 Samuel 19:21) David would not have it.

Note David’s response.
“(22) But David said, ‘What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be as an adversary to me? Shall anyone be put to death in Israel this day? For DO I NOT KNOW THAT I AM THIS DAY KING OVER ISRAEL?’ (23) And the king said to Shimei, ‘You shall not die.’ And the king gave him his oath.” (2 Samuel 19:22-23)

David was king. He was God’s choice. David knew it and therefore had NOTHING TO PROVE! He was willing to let it go and LET GOD deal with it. Prior to David’s death he spoke to his son Solomon regarding those who had been his enemies, including Shimei. (1 Kings 2:8) Shimei was eventually ordered by Solomon to be put to death for disobeying what he had agreed to do. (1 Kings 2:36-46) It was then that Shimei became accountable for his sins.

Trust in God has been expressed by the statement “LET GO AND LET GOD!” That doesn’t mean to let our self-control go, but rather recognize how in many situations we need to turn lose of the focus on what others have said and done and LET GOD be the One to ultimately deal with it. Let us trust God to handle such situations as we live on as His faithful children. He knows how to work things out. Our energies can be used for better purposes than revenge, especially since that is His department. (Romans 12:19) May this strength of David be exhibited in our life.

Have a great day RESTRAINED BY A RETAINED TRUST IN GOD!

Sigh To Song!

Have you ever been walking along and found your pace slowing because you began to think about something that may have perplexed or troubled you with regard to the way life seemed to be going? Then as you continued in your thinking, did your pace pick back up again when you began to focus on other positive things that were taking place in your life? Things come to mind that may cause us to utter a heavy sigh. There are life experiences which can deeply distress and discourage us. However, when we remember God’s timetable is not always the same as ours and that His track record of faithfulness is amazing, that sigh can quickly TURN TO SINGING.

In Psalm thirteen David asked the question, “How long…?” three times within the first two verses. He wondered about God’s mindfulness of him and what he was experiencing in life. He felt forgotten (vs.1) while he sensed his enemy was being exalted. (vs.2) His perspective brought him sorrow. (vs.2) He was shaken (vs.4) and perhaps he was sighing because the situation had shaken the SONG out of his heart. Has our focus ever been there as we observed all the things going on around us? Fortunately David’s view did not remain there. Though we find David wondering some negative thoughts in some of the psalms he wrote, those thoughts always seemed to eventually come back to truth of God that brought back the SONG IN HIS LIFE.

David ended this psalm with these words:
“(5) But I HAVE TRUSTED in your steadfast love; MY HEART SHALL REJOICE in your salvation. (6) I WILL SING TO THE LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.” (Psalm 13:5-6)

I love to SING. SONGS are frequently going through my mind. However, I have had experiences that seemed to take the SONG out of my life, at least for the moment. But, oh the joy of having the SONG return. There is real power gained from maintaining a SONG IN THE HEART. May we continue to keep our eyes on God so that His awesome power and faithfulness can keep the SONG going.

Have a great day IN TUNE WITH GOD FOR A SUSTAINING HEART MELODY!

Superpowers!

“Faster than a speeding bullet.” “More powerful than a locomotive.” “Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.” A description of Superman! This comic book character was brought to life in a television program years ago and then in a series of movies. The man who played the role in the movies (the late Christopher Reeves) became SUPERMAN in the eyes of many as he battled his own life challenges. How many children have ever run around with a cape (made from a towel or old sheet) trailing behind them pretending to be Superman; running around with both arms stretch forward and upward as they LEAPED off of steps or over low fences and other objects? There seems to be a period in life when individuals see themselves as invincible. Nothing can stop them. Death is a long way off. Perhaps that is your view right now. Though we should be cautious regarding our own estimation of our life, do we have within ourselves that which provides a sense of being superhuman? Is there anything exhibited in the manner in which we approach life that might cause others to wonder about the power behind us?

David was a valiant mighty man supported by other mighty men. (Note the descriptions of them as recorded in 2 Samuel 23.) However, David did not look to himself for the power to overcome his foes. Even as a youth he saw God as the One who brought the victory. (1 Samuel 17:37 & 45-47) Recently reading through the end of 2 Samuel, I was struck by a statement David made in a song which focused on his being delivered from all his enemies. Note what David stated in the following portion of that song.

“(29) For you are my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness. (30) For by you I can run against a troop, and BY MY GOD I CAN LEAP OVER A WALL. (31) This God -- his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” (2 Samuel 22:29-31 ESV)

It was David’s faith and reliance on God that made him superhuman. It was God who provided the victories in David’s life. For the Apostles their association with Jesus was taken note of. (Acts 4:13) Though they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were bold and unstoppable as they proclaimed the truth of Jesus. God’s Spirit worked powerfully within them. Because of the power of God at work in their lives they had become more than human and continued LEAPING forward and upward in the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus.

Let us not underestimate what God can do in and through us when we rely upon Him. His power at work in us is “able to do far more abundantly that all that we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20 ESV) Understand what Paul was saying! God is “able.” He is able to do “more”, but not just more. God is able to do “far more” and to do so “abundantly”, even beyond the things we might “ask” or “think” in our minds. It is He Who makes us more than the ordinary as we trust Him and submit to His Will.

Paul asserted …
“I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” (Philippians 4:13 ESV)

John declared that faith is the victory that overcomes the world. (1 John 5:4) This assurance is for those who are born of God and maintain a faith not in self, but in Him and what He has promised to bring about. We cannot overcome the world with that which is of the world. We must rely on a power beyond that of mankind and look to God.

There is superpower to tap into beyond ourselves. No, we won’t be given the power to look through walls, but we can be enabled to see the things of God in a way the world is unable to. We won’t be able to stop a speeding train, but as the world tries to railroad us with its ideas, we can have our “train of thought” brought on track with the mind of God so as to enable us to keep moving forward in a way that is unstoppable. And we won’t be provided the agility to leap over tall buildings, but God will provide the strength necessary to LEAP OVER THE OBSTACLES the world places in our way that would otherwise hold us down and hinder our spiritual growth and progress in our journey with God. Relying upon God we can truly become overcomers.

Like David, remember that God’s Way is perfect and His Word proves true! May this truth put some spring in our step as we take the LEAP OF FAITH based upon the assurance, faithfulness, and power of God while we continue seeking to carry out His Sovereign Will.

Have a great day AS A SUPERHERO OF FAITH IN GOD’S EYES!

Playing By The Rules! (part 4 of 4)

The fourth rule is one Jesus taught and which we have come to refer to as the “GOLDEN RULE.” Jesus put it in these words:

“So whatever you wish that OTHERS WOULD DO TO YOU, DO ALSO TO THEM, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12 ESV)

This is the rule for life that prompts activity which is not contingent on the actions of others, but rather on their need and a focus on the way we ourselves would like to be treated. This rule, rather than embracing a list of negatives like the others we’ve noted, calls us toward taking positive action in dealing with others. And there is real power in living according to this rule. In treating others kindly, even when they have not deserved it, may be the very thing that finally wins them over and transforms them from enemy to friend. This is why this rule is so golden. Since we know how we want to be treated, let that focus prompt us in all our actions toward others.

Have a great day ACCEPTING GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES TO PRACTICE THIS RULE!

Playing By The Rules! (part 3 of 4)

A third rule some live by has been referred to as the “RULE OF GOLD.” This is where either the one who has the gold makes the rules or whatever will get the gold is the thing done. In this case money (worldly wealth) has become the master over the life. It is covetousness or greed that rules.

Paul placed greed in the category of “idolatry” (Colossians 3:5) because the wealth becomes the god that controls the decisions and actions of the one under its power.

Jesus warned:
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You CANNOT serve God and money.” (Matthew 6:24 ESV)

He also asserted the following:
“And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ONE’S LIFE DOES NOT CONSIST IN THE ABUNDANCE OF HIS POSSESSIONS.’” (Luke 12:15 ESV)

There may be only a one letter difference between GOD and GOLD, but there is a world of difference for this life and all eternity between which is our Master! The right rule is connected to the right Ruler.

Have a great day RULED BY GOD!

Playing By The Rules! (part 2 of 4)

Another rule some live by has been called the “SILVER RULE.” This is the rule that has been described as a spirit of treating others the way they treat you. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. You be nice to me and I’ll be nice to you. You share with me and I will share with you. But be unkind to me and I will be unkind to you. It is action which is always contingent on the actions of others. Is this the rule we live by?

Jesus taught:
“(46) For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet only your brothers, WHAT MORE ARE YOU DOING THAN OTHERS? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?” (Matthew 5:46-47 ESV)

Jesus clearly indicates that more should be expected of us than what we see of the world’s actions. When we live by the “SILVER RULE” we are no better than those in the world. May we connect with others in accordance with what they need. This is the very example we get in viewing the walk of Jesus on earth. We ought to be following in His steps.

Have a great day DOING MORE THAN OTHERS!

Playing By The Rules! (part 1 of 4)

Have you ever played a game where it made a difference where you played what the rules were? Maybe you have an arrangement that whomever’s house you’re at determines the rules for the game. This works fine when you understand the rules and agree upon them, for then you know how to play and what to expect. Things always go better when everyone plays by the rules. However, what happens when everyone has a different set of rules in mind or the rules are just not clear? Some people in life seem to be making up the rules as they go along. Others seem bent on playing by their own rules regardless of the desires of others. What rule do we live by?

Over the next few days we will focus on four rules that some have chosen to live by and consider where we are in relation to them? We will consider the first one today.

Is it the “IRON RULE” you live by? To live by this rule means that we do others in before they do us in. It is a rule that causes us to look suspiciously on others, viewing them as deceitful and unworthy of any trust or kindness from us. They are seen as out to get us so the decision is made to get them first. This is a rather ugly outlook and way of dealing with others and is certainly not Christ-like in nature.

Jesus has instructed us:
“(43) You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ (44) BUT I SAY to you, LOVE YOUR ENEMIES and PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU, (45) so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:43-45 ESV)

Have a great day REACHING OUT IN LOVE TO OTHERS!

Even Me!

There are many scholars who are able to lecture and write at great length the facts relating to all kinds of things. Is what they know always properly applied in their own life? Certainly there are genuine experts associated with many fields of learning. I enjoy reading scholarly works to gain insights from those who have gained more knowledge than I. However, it has been suggested that “He who teaches the Word of God is never a scholar: he is always a student.” [source: “sentence sermons”]

We noted not long ago (03/01/2006 “teEn-MAIL”) Jesus’ statement regarding the scribes and Pharisees who preached, but did not put those things into practice themselves. (Matthew 23:3) Paul also asked in his letter to the church at Rome, “you then who teach others, do you not TEACH YOURSELF?” (Romans 2:21a) One of the reasons teachers fall under a greater judgment (James 3:1) is because they are not only responsible for what they teach to others, but are also without excuse if it is not taken to heart themselves.

Some subjects are easier for me to teach than others. There are times when a passage I am preparing to teach even makes me uncomfortable. Am I to ignore teaching it as if the passage did not exist? Am I to skip over it as if the lesson was not needed? No! All of God’s Word is intended to be taught. I must take the text to heart with a resolve to allow that truth to do its rightful work in my own life as I teach others to do the same. The uncomfortableness with a passage is a good thing if that is what I allow to happen. How many teachers might there be if everyone waited until they had it all together before they taught a lesson? The teacher (and I’m preaching to self here) must always remain open to the personal application of what is being taught. Perhaps that is part of what is reflected by the statement often made that one learns more from teaching a class than from having just sat in it.

Every time we open the Scriptures, let us do so with the same desire expressed by David when he wrote…

“(4) MAKE ME TO KNOW YOUR WAYS O LORD; TEACH ME YOUR PATHS. (5) LEAD ME IN YOUR TRUTH AND TEACH ME, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” (Psalm 25:4-5 ESV)

It was not merely for the sake of gaining knowledge or even passing it on to others, but also for the purpose of being able to walk in a proper manner.

David also stated…
“TEACH ME YOUR WAY, O LORD, THAT I MAY WALK IN YOUR TRUTH; unite my heart to fear your name.” (Psalm 86:11 ESV)
In the English Standard Version I found the phrase “TEACH ME” to be used at least 17 times in the Psalms. The student may become a teacher, but may the teacher always remain a student. TEACH ME! A teachable spirit must always be maintained so that we can constantly receive from God the direction our life needs. Let this openness continue to be so in our life!

Have a great day MEETING OPEN BOOK WITH OPEN HEART!

Walking Partner!

When I go walking I am usually walking alone. Though I do encounter others along the way there are times when I am off alone on a trail. Walking alone, especially in such areas, I must remain watchful because of the possibility of stumbling over tree roots crossing the path or loosing my FOOTING on slippery areas muddied by the rain.

Solomon stated…
“(9) Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. (10) For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But WOE TO HIM WHO IS ALONE WHEN HE FALLS AND HAS NOT ANOTHER TO LIFT HIM UP!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 ESV)

Both in a physical and spiritual sense, we can find ourselves in difficulty when we walk alone. One misstep can bring us down so quickly. We need to keep God as a life walking partner or we may loose perspective and then our FOOTING as well.

The psalmist Asaph stated…
“(1) Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. (2) But AS FOR ME, MY FEET HAD ALMOST STUMBLED, MY STEPS HAD NEARLY SLIPPED. (3) For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” (Psalm 73:1-3 ESV)

As Asaph thought within himself and from his limited vantage point viewed the life of the wicked, his perception was not IN STEP with the broader view of God. He began losing his FOOTING of faith and hope as it appeared his striving to live right before God was in vain. (Psalm 73:13-14) In his own estimation of things the wicked seemed to be fairing better that he was. (Psalm 73:4-12)

Fortunately the Psalmist did not slip, fall, and give up. He continued walking and regained his FOOTING of faith and hope based upon the reality of God’s perspective.

Asaph eventually concluded…
“(16) But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, (17) UNTIL I WENT INTO THE SANCTUARY OF GOD; THEN I DISCERNED THEIR END.” (Psalm 73:16-17 ESV)

Being in the presence of God, Asaph was able to discern things more clearly. He gained a perception that kept him from slipping and falling. In one of David’s psalms he noted it was God Who made his STEPS SECURE. (Psalm 40:2) David also stated it is those who keep the commands of God in the heart whose STEPS DO NOT SLIP. (Psalm 37:31) Being mindful of following God on the right path is also important as David found it was there that his FEET DID NOT SLIP.” (Psalm 18:36 ESV)

May we allow God to establish our way as we look to Him for a proper perspective for walking through life. Like Enoch, let us continue walking with God now (Genesis 5:24) so that we can be safely lead home to an eternity with Him. With God we need never walk alone.

Have a great day IN STEP AND ON TRACK WITH GOD!

Hidden Power!

I love bread. It doesn't even have to have anything on it for me to
enjoy it. And I love to walk in to the smell of fresh bread or rolls coming
out of the oven. It still amazes me that one can start out with a little bit
of dough, mix in some yeast that secretly works its way through the whole
batch until it is all leavened (Matthew 13:33), causing it to rise into a
bigger lump and ultimately a large loaf of bread. That leaven (or yeast),
though hidden within, powerfully works through it all, making its presence
evident by the RISING of the dough. God's Word is intended to work in a
similar manner in our life.

In the Psalms we read.
"I have STORED UP YOUR WORD IN MY HEART, THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN
AGAINST YOU." (Psalm 119:11 ESV)

Both the NKJV and the NLT refer to the Word being "hidden" in the heart.
God's Word hidden within is to secretly and powerfully begin to work through
our whole life giving RISE to the godly character His Word is intended to
instill within us. As our character RISES above the standards of the world
it becomes evident that the Word is doing its work within.

Let us continue to store up God's Word within so that we might not sin
against Him, but rather RISE to the challenge of displaying an example of
God's Wisdom in action. As we strive to become more and more like Christ we
can draw attention to the true "bread of life" (John 6:48) Who brings real
nourishment to our souls. May we continually bear in mind that more
important than "kneeding the dough" is our "needing to do" as God's Word has
directed.

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD'S WORD TO WORK AS HE WILLS!

Raised Up! (part 6 of 6)

The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ are very significant, being at the core of the Gospel of Jesus. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) However, that is not to be the end of the focus. Just as the death of Jesus was not the end -- He being raised to life from the tomb -- we should recognize the great significance associated with our own life.

Writing to the church at Rome Paul stated…
“We know that CHRIST BEING RAISED FROM THE DEAD WILL NEVER DIE AGAIN; death no longer has dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9 ESV)

Jesus’ resurrection revealed His power over the grip of death. He was raised up never to die again. He rose to LIVE and LIVE He does! Because He LIVES so can we (John 14:19), but how we LIVE is to be seriously considered.

Earlier in this same chapter of Romans, Paul noted a symbolic parallelism for us relating to Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. He wrote…

“(3) Do you not know that ALL OF US WHO HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST JESUS WERE BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH? (4) We were BURIED therefore WITH HIM BY BAPTISM INTO DEATH, in order that, just AS CHRIST WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD by the glory of the Father, WE TOO MIGHT WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE. (Romans 6:3-4 ESV)

The water of baptism is like a burial as we are immersed under the water, dying to sin and to self (i.e. Romans 6:6), and being raised up ready to walk in a NEW LIFE. Being baptized puts us in Christ (Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:12), bringing us into the realm of forgiveness from our sins (Acts 2:38) and the sphere of salvation. (1 Peter 3:20-21) However, that doesn’t mean we sit back in the glow of our salvation in Him. We are to LIVE, walking on in the NEW LIFE in Christ. Being brought under the power of His love, we no longer LIVE for ourselves, but rather for Him who died and was raised again. (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) That is to mark our purpose for living.

Remember Jesus’ encouragement regarding His purpose in coming.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I CAME THAT THEY MAY HAVE LIFE AND HAVE IT ABUNDANTLY.” (John 10:10 ESV)

In Jesus is found not just life, but abundant life. It is in Him that we find and experience the truest life possible. And that LIVING goes even beyond this realm.

Jesus also encouraged…
“(39) And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. (40) For this is THE WILL OF MY FATHER, that EVERYONE WHO LOOKS ON THE SON AND BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD HAVE ETERNAL LIFE, AND I WILL RAISE HIM UP ON THE LAST DAY.” (John 6:39-40 ESV)

Let us therefore consider ourselves “dead to sin and ALIVE TO GOD IN CHRIST JESUS.” (Romans 6:11) There are works we were created in Christ Jesus to walk in. (Ephesians 2:10) Let us seek and do them to His glory and praise. Like Paul, may our life be so centered in Jesus that whether we are facing life or death, it is done for Him. (Romans 14:7-8) LIVING our life for Jesus now we have the hope of ultimately being raised up to die no more! May our life be lived in LIVING praise to Him!

Have a great day RAISED TO PRAISE THROUGH ETERNAL DAYS!

Raised Up! (part 5 of 6)

As we began this series we noted Moses’ statement regarding a prophet like him Whom God would raise up (Deuteronomy 18:15), the ultimate fulfillment of which Peter associated with the coming of Jesus, the Messiah. (Acts 3:22-26) We also noted just a few verses further down from Moses’ reference to this coming prophet that the way to identify a false prophet was to see if what he said came true. (Deuteronomy 18:22) That seems like a pretty simple way to PROVE whether or not a prophet should be believed. However, we may find it amazing how many continue to follow even today those who make numerous claims that never come true.

Jesus came onto life’s scene. He talked and walked among man. He raised the hopes of many while raising the anger of others. Jesus was handed over to be crucified, died a cruel death on a cross, and was laid in a tomb.

During His ministry, when Jesus was asked for a sign of PROOF regarding Who He claimed to be, He referred to the sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:40; 16:4), a reference to his three day burial. On another occasion, when again asked for a sign, Jesus referred to the destroying of the temple and raising it in three days (meaning His body, not the structure in Jerusalem). (John 2:18-21) This was remembered by some while Jesus was being crucified and so they challenged Him to use His power to come down from the cross. (Matthew 27:40) It was also remembered by the Jewish leaders who asked for the tomb to be sealed and guarded, fearing Jesus’ body would be stolen to create a resurrection hoax. (Matthew 27:62-64) Following the Lord’s resurrection the disciples remembered these things. (John 2:22)

When the first day of the week arrived, we read…
“(1) Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. (2) And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. (3) His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. (4) And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. (5) But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. (6) He is not here, for HE HAS RISEN, AS HE SAID. Come, see the place where he lay. (7) Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.’” (Matthew 28:1-7 ESV)

“He has risen, as He said.” Just as Jesus said it would be it was! All that He foretold came about just as He had said! His Words were true. The fulfillment of His words was PROOF that He was a true prophet and more! And what He has declared can still be depended upon. His death on the cross was for our sins, but His being raised up from the dead was the crowning PROOF regarding Who He was and is.

Paul declared it in the Areopagus at Athens.
“(30) The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, (31) because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and OF THIS HE HAS GIVEN ASSURANCE TO ALL BY RAISING HIM FROM THE DEAD.” (Acts 17:30-31 ESV)

Paul also affirmed it as he began his letter to the church at Rome.
“(1) Paul, a servant of CHRIST JESUS, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, (2) which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, (3) concerning HIS SON, who was descended from David according to the flesh (4) and was DECLARED TO BE THE SON OF GOD IN POWER according to the Spirit of holiness BY HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD, JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD,” (Romans 1:1-4 ESV)

Because the PROOF that was raised with Christ could not be denied, the Jewish leaders gathered to devise a tale and paid the soldiers to tell it. (Matthew 28:12-15) However, the truth remains that Jesus was raised just as He said; all of it -- His death, burial, and resurrection -- taking place in accordance with the Scriptures. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) May our life be raised up in a faith based upon the PROOF God has provided in Christ.

Have a great day TRUSTING TO BE WHAT HE HAS FORETOLD!

Raised Up! (part 4 of 6)

As we noted yesterday, after a sponge of sour wine was raised up to
Jesus while He hung on the cross, He declared .
". 'IT IS FINISHED,' and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."
(John 19:30 ESV)

What had been prophesied regarding Jesus had been fulfilled! What He
came to do had been completed! According to God's timetable the mission was
accomplished! It was a SUCCESS! However, for the moment it was not being
viewed as such, at least not by the disciples.

As Jesus died and then was taken down from the cross and placed in the
tomb, something else began to be raised. What could the disciples make of
all this? In view of Jesus' death and burial there was occasion for the
raising of confusion and doubt. Things were not working out according the
expectation of the disciples. Eventually they would recall the Lord's words
and believe (i.e. John 2:22), but for the present the day between His death
and resurrection was one of uncertainty.

The confusion and uncertainty were reflected in:
-- The perplexity of an open and empty tomb. (Luke 24:2-4)
-- The continuation of mourning and weeping. (Mark 16:10)
-- The report from the women sounding like "an idle tale." (Luke 24:11)
-- The disciples' inability to understand even after seeing the empty
tomb. (John 20:9)
-- The hiding away behind a locked door. (John 20:19)
-- Then there was the sorrowful focus of the two on the road to Emmaus.
(Luke 24:13-24)
-- This confusion was expressed in the words, "But we had hoped that he
was the one to redeem Israel.." (Luke 24:21)

Jesus had said "It is finished" and perhaps they thought they were.
Where was the hope? Where was the SUCCESS? What was to become of the
anticipated kingdom now?

Remember Jesus' earlier statement to the disciples regarding this time.
"(20) Truly, truly, I say to you, YOU WILL WEEP AND LAMENT, BUT THE
WORLD WILL REJOICE. YOU WILL BE SORROWFUL, BUT YOUR SORROW WILL TURN INTO
JOY. (21) When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has
come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the
anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. (22) So
also YOU HAVE SORROW NOW, BUT I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN AND YOUR HEARTS WILL
REJOICE, AND NO ONE WILL TAKE YOUR JOY FROM YOU." (John 16:20-22)

Jesus acknowledged the emotions the disciples would experience. He was
aware of their struggle to comprehend. There would be weeping, lamentation,
and deep sorrow. However, He encouraged them that they would see and a
LASTING JOY WOULD BE THEIRS.

Even for us, when things don't work out in the way we have anticipated,
that does not mean they won't work out! God is faithful! He will do it! (1
Thessalonians 5:24) Let us remember God is still ultimately in control. He
has His own way of working things out. Though we may not understand, He
knows what He is doing. Let us be patient. Let us wait on the Lord. Let us
leave the tomorrows in His hands. And let us brace ourselves for wonder at
the marvelous way in which He will SUCCESSFULLY bring His Will to
fulfillment.

Have a great day TRUSTING GOD EVEN WHEN LIFE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!

Raised Up! (part 3 of 6)

One of the signs of a false prophet (or prophecy) is that if what is said does not come about, that prophet has spoken presumptuously on his own. (Deuteronomy 18:22) It is therefore not a message from God. Besides the display of power in the miracles of Jesus as a proof He was from God (i.e. John 9:32-33), so was the fulfillment of prophecy after prophecy marking Him as the long awaited Messiah. He was the prophet who would rise up. (Deuteronomy 18:15; Acts 3:22-26)

Even as Jesus walked among men, He was looking ahead to the MISSION HE CAME TO FULFILL. As things continued to unfold according the God’s timetable, there was nothing that would deter Him from completing it. Though it was not fully understood by the disciples or others, Jesus Himself referred to His death again and again. (i.e. Matthew 16:21; 17:23; 20:19)

Jesus, speaking to Pharisees and other Jews regarding His relation to the Father, mentioned that He was going away and that they would look for Him, but would die in their sin because where He was going they could not come. This made some wonder if He was talking about killing Himself. (John 8:21-22) As Jesus continued speaking we see that He was looking ahead to His death and their involvement in bringing it about.

We read…
“(28) So Jesus said to them, ‘WHEN YOU HAVE LIFTED UP THE SON OF MAN, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. (29) And HE WHO SENT ME IS WITH ME. He has not left me alone, for I ALWAYS DO THE THINGS THAT ARE PLEASING TO HIM.’” (John 8:28-29 ESV)

“When you have lifted up….” Jesus would be raised up on a cross to die and it would be at their urging. However, this was the PURPOSE for which Jesus had been sent.

Regarding His purpose we read the words of Jesus Himself…
“(32) And I, WHEN I AM LIFTED UP from the earth, WILL DRAW ALL PEOPLE TO MYSELF.” (33) He said this to show by what KIND OF DEATH he was going to die.” (John 12:32-33 ESV)

This passage makes it clear Jesus was not referring to His ascension back to heaven, but rather the fact He would be raised up on a cross. If none of this happened we should see Jesus as a false prophet. But it did happen! It all came about just as Jesus said it would. Pilate handed Him over to be crucified. (John 19:16). Jesus bore the cross to the place called Golgotha (John 19:17) with Simon of Cyrene forced to carry it part of the way. (Luke 23:26) Jesus was nailed to and raised up on that cross, willingly laying down His life (John 10:17-18) for us.

After a sponge of sour wine was raised up to Him on a hyssop branch, Jesus declared …
“… ‘IT IS FINISHED,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:30 ESV)

Fulfilled! Completed! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! These Jewish leaders were set on a MISSION, not realizing they were merely playing a role (along with the help of Romans) to FULFILL THE MISSION of Jesus giving His life for the sins of the world and thus providing an eternal hope. However, that death was not the end! Sunday was coming!

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY ALL THE TRUTH OF JESUS CHRIST!

Raised Up! (part 2 of 6)

When Jesus, the Messiah, came onto life’s scene and walked among men, HIS PRESENCE gave rise to various responses. For some, HIS PRESENCE gave rise to hope as in the case of Simeon, when Jesus was presented at the temple. (Luke 2:28-32) HIS PRESENCE also gave rise to faith in Who He truly was, as in the case of the Samaritans (John 4:42), the disciples (John 6:68-69), and others. However, the PRESENCE OF JESUS did not always give rise to a positive response. There were those who would not accept Him regardless of the proof presented, even that of His power to raise the dead. (Matthew 11:4-5; John 11:38-48 & John 12:9-10) The debate continues even today. While Jesus’ PRESENCE continued in this realm, again and again questions were raised in an attempt to trap Him or find something of which He could be accused. (i.e. Matthew 22:15)

As the level of hatred toward Jesus continued to rise, He was arrested and the power of the Roman government was brought into play. Since Pilate did not see anything for which Jesus was worthy of death, but rather perceived it was out of envy Jesus had been delivered up (Matthew 27:18), he made several attempts to release Him. However, these Jewish leaders would not have it and so their voices were raised up against Jesus.

In John’s account we read…
“(5) So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, ‘Behold the man!’ (6) When the chief priests and the officers saw him, THEY CRIED OUT, ‘CRUCIFY HIM, CRUCIFY HIM!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.’” (John 19:5-6 ESV)

And a little bit further we read…
“(12) From then on Pilate sought to release him, but THE JEWS CRIED OUT, ‘IF YOU RELEASE THIS MAN, YOU ARE NOT CAESAR’S FRIEND. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.’ (13) So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. (14) Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, ‘Behold your King!’ (15) THEY CRIED OUT, ‘AWAY WITH HIM, AWAY WITH HIM, CRUCIFY HIM!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Shall I crucify your King?’ The chief priests answered, ‘WE HAVE NO KING BUT CAESAR.’ (16) So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.” (John 19:12-16 ESV)

Pilate could not dissuade them. These leaders were set on their rejection of Jesus and raised their voices against Him. They wanted HIS PRESENCE out of theirs. How about us? Is our voice raised against Jesus or for Him?

Jesus exhorted…
“(32) So everyone WHO ACKNOWLEDGES ME BEFORE MEN, I ALSO WILL ACKNOWLEDGE BEFORE MY FATHER who is in heaven, (33) but WHOEVER DENIES ME BEFORE MEN, I ALSO WILL DENY BEFORE MY FATHER who is in heaven.” (Mathew 10:32-33 ESV)

How we view Jesus and what we say regarding Him is of eternal significance. Is HIS PRESENCE rightfully held in our heart and mind? Is that PRESENCE reflected in our speech? Those who still say “AWAY WITH HIM” will find themselves away from Him. However, as we accept Jesus for Who He truly is, properly responding to Him and the truth He has declared, we have the hope of one day being TAKEN AWAY to be eternally with Him. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) May we encourage one another with that thought.

Have a great day RESPONDING RIGHTEOUSLY TO OUR GREAT REDEEMER!

Raised Up! (part 1 of 6)

We may have many plans in mind for the future. Perhaps some of those plans are linked to short term goals while others are way off in the future. As the short term plans come into being, hopefully we are encouraged by progress toward the long term. The focuses along the way are intended to urge us on toward the fulfillment of GREATER things.

As Moses prepared the nation of Israel for entrance into the promise land, he knew he was not going to be able to enter himself. Though he had been the one to lead the people out of Egypt, he would not be the one to guide them into the land God was giving them.

Moses encouraged the people, revealing…
“(15) The LORD YOUR GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM AMONG YOU, from your brothers -- it is TO HIM YOU SHALL LISTEN -- (16) just as you desired of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ (17) And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. (18) I WILL RAISE UP FOR THEM A PROPHET LIKE YOU FROM AMONG THEIR BROTHERS. And I WILL PUT MY WORDS IN HIS MOUTH, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. (19) And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15-19 ESV)

Joshua was the one to lead Israel into the promised land. He became God’s spokesman. However, the full focus of A PROPHET who would be raised up was actually looking ahead even beyond Joshua.

Note the GREATER focus of Peter when he quoted Moses.
“(22) Moses said, ‘THE LORD GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. (23) And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’ (24) And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, ALSO PROCLAIMED THESE DAYS. (25) You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ (26) GOD, HAVING RAISED UP HIS SERVANT, SENT HIM TO YOU FIRST, TO BLESS YOU by turning every one of you from your wickedness.” (Acts 3:22-26 ESV)

Drawing the attention of this crowd to the reality of Jesus being the Christ (Acts 3:17-21), Peter reminded his listeners on this occasion that Moses had spoken of A PROPHET and THIS PROPHET was the MESSIAH Who had come. A PROPHET like Moses, but GREATER. As Moses was God’s chosen deliverer from bondage, Jesus (the Messiah) was sent by God and was raised up to be the GREAT Deliverer from the bondage to sin and death. Therefore the Hebrew writer noted that Jesus was worthy of GREATER honor (Hebrews 3:3) because Moses was faithful as a servant (Hebrews 3:5) while Jesus was faithful as a son over God’s house. (Hebrews 3:6) And not only did Jesus have the word of God in His mouth, but He was Himself the Word become flesh (John 1:1-2 & 14) to dwell for a while among mankind.

As the teaching of Jesus is raised, let our attention also be raised so that our life may be raised to the standard God has established for life.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S PLANS!

Reality Of Presumption!

In 1 Samuel 15 we have the account of Saul going out to fight against Amalek. Before the battle Saul was instructed by the LORD through Samuel that he was to devote all that the Amalekites had to destruction. Nothing was to be spared either among man or beast. This was God’s judgment against that nation for having earlier opposed Israel when they came up out of Egypt. (vss.1-3) Though there were other times God allowed His people to take of the spoils of war, nothing was to be saved from the victory over the Amalekites. Unfortunately Saul only partially obeyed. All the people were devoted to destruction by the edge of the sword, but the life of Agag (the king of the Amalekites), as well as the best of the sheep, oxen, fattened calves, the lambs, and all that was good were not completely destroyed. (vs.9)

It appears Saul was proud of himself following the victory because he set up a monument for himself at Carmel. (vs.12) Though he may have been pleased with himself, God was not pleased and Samuel was sent to confront Saul. Upon their meeting, King Saul declared, “I have performed the commandment of the LORD.” (vs.13) When Samuel brought up the sound of the bleating of sheep and the lowing of the oxen in his ears (vs.14) Saul began with one of those notorious “Oh that! Well…” statements that are still heard today when one gets caught with their hand in the proverbial cookie jar. God had given a direct and very specific command, but Saul and the people came up with a “better” idea. Saul explained they had brought all the “best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the LORD” (vs.15), but the rest had been devoted to destruction. That was not what God had commanded. Saul had not fully obeyed God. It was presumptive on the part of Saul to do what HE THOUGHT was “better” than God had commanded and yet he apparently anticipated God’s acceptance.

Note a portion of Samuel’s response.
“(22) And Samuel said, ‘Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. (23) For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and PRESUMPTION IS AS INIQUITY AND IDOLATRY. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.’” (1 Samuel 15:22-23 ESV)

Note that Samuel paralleled the act of presumption (also translated arrogance and stubbornness) to “iniquity and IDOLATRY.” For Saul to disregard what God had commanded and presume to do what he decided was “better” was like placing himself in the position of God. Samuel declared that obeying God was “better” than the sacrifices Saul had in mind. What Saul should have sacrificed was his OWN THOUGHTS so that he would have properly submitted to the Will of God. Because Saul rejected God’s Word, he himself was rejected by God as king. (vss.22 and 26-28)

When we presume to choose to do something contrary to what God has commanded, it is idolatry because God is not receiving the worship (worthship) that is rightfully His! To decide OUR WILL or the will of another is “better” than God’s is definitely an act of arrogance and stubbornness. To infer -- either by word or by action -- that we can pick and choose which commands of God to obey is to claim that some of them are important while others make no difference. But who says that is so? God or man? Certainly we must take into consideration who particular commands were spoken to in Scripture, the context in which they were given, and also whether they relate to living under the Law given to Moses or the Law of Christ. But to sacrifice God’s Will to take up OUR OWN is idolatry because we have exalted OUR OWN THOUGHTS and desires above His.

Let us guard against following in the error of Saul. If we truly desire to be accepted by God we must be willing to accept His Word. Let us not sacrifice obedience, but rather ourselves to the Lord (Romans 12:1) by completely surrendering to His Will. Having OUR THOUGHTS transformed and renewed in accordance with His Will brings our life into contact with that which is truly good, acceptable, and perfect. (Romans 12:2) May His Word and Will be joyfully received.

Have a great day OFFERING GOD WHAT HE DESIRES!

Gainful Discussion!

There are numerous topics we can find ourselves discussing today ranging from the small talk of the day’s weather to the seriousness of politics and religion (two subjects some try to avoid). However, some discussion even regarding the most serious of subjects can be worthless if the right substance is not brought into it.

As Paul, a prisoner at Rome, sensed the end of his life in this realm was drawing near, he urgently warned Timothy regarding things of which he needed to be mindful as he carried on his ministry at Ephesus. Because of false teachers and error already circulating (i.e. 2 Timothy 2:18 and 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3), Timothy needed to remain focused on the truth of God.

In both letters to Timothy Paul urged…
“(20) O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. AVOID THE IRREVERENT BABBLE and contradictions of what is FALSELY CALLED ‘KNOWLEDGE,’ (21) for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.” (1 Timothy 6:20-21 ESV)

And…

“(15) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (16) But AVOID IRREVERENT BABBLE, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, (17) and THEIR TALK WILL SPREAD LIKE GANGRENE. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, (18) who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some.” (2 Timothy 2:15-18 ESV)

The Greek word translated “babble” is “kenophonia”, a compound of “kenos” (empty) and “phone” (a sound), thus being a reference to empty talk. Among our English definitions for “babble” is that of the unintelligible sound of an infant. Paul referred to it as being “irreverent” [(Gk.) “bebelos”, also translated godless or profane in contrast to that which is sacred]. Because of this “irreverent babble” some had swerved from the faith or had their faith upset. Therefore Paul warned for such to be avoided because it could spread ungodliness like gangrene. When gangrene begins to spread in the physical body it can lead to the need of severing part of the body in order to keep it from leading the death. The picture is the same with regard to spiritual matters.

To be involved in babbling. the discussion could merely be a pooling of spiritual ignorance by those who join in. Is our desire merely to talk about the Word of God or to get into the Scriptures, allowing them to speak to us? For our life to be SPIRITUALLY SOUND we need to hold to the substance the Scriptures provide.

There is no substance to many ideas circulated today. Just as during the days of Paul, there remains that which is “falsely called knowledge.” (1 Timothy 6:20) May we avoid the “empty sound” as we continually seek the SOUND TEACHING of the Scriptures.

Have a great day MATURING IN GENUINE GODLY DISCUSSION!

A Winner!

Sometimes when an individual is involved in a contest and does not win one of the top prizes, they are given what is called a “consolation prize.” This prize -- usually of much lesser value than what was hoped for -- is intended to console the feelings of disappointment for having not won. In life, when we might feel like the world is winning instead of us, do we hope for a “consolation prize” for our efforts or do we instead PRIZE THE CONSOLATION of the truth God has revealed regarding those who keep their faith in Him?

In view of the wickedness going on in the world, one of the Psalmists stated…
“When the cares of my heart are many, YOUR CONSOLATIONS CHEER MY SOUL.” (Psalm 94:19 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads…
“When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” (NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House)

Our view needs to remain focused on the promises God has revealed through His Word. Living on the side of God it matters not who or what might be against us. (Romans 8:31 & 35-39) He is both able and faithful to bring His promises to fruition and secure our lives for an eternity with Him.

John encouraged…
“For EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN BORN OF GOD OVERCOMES THE WORLD. And this is THE VICTORY that has overcome the world — OUR FAITH.” (1 John 5:4 ESV)

Our great CONSOLATION TO PRIZE is that what God ultimately has in store for us far outweighs anything we might endure presently. (note 2 Corinthians 4:16-18) We may lose some of life’s skirmishes, but like David let us remember the battle still belongs to the Lord. (1 Samuel 17:47) When we wonder about the direction of the world, as we live to please God we are the ones who will be the true winners!

Have a great day GAINING FIRST PRIZE BY KEEPING GOD FIRST!

Believing And Trusting!

Believing and trusting are important for carrying us on through life. However, what and who we believe and trust in is important. We also ought to consider what elements of self might be involved in the believing and trusting that can play a role in how we view perceived outcomes. What our expectations are linked to is important to carefully and honestly evaluate.

David encouraged…
“(3) Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. (4) Delight yourself in the LORD, and HE WILL GIVE YOU THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART.” (Psalm 37:3-4 ESV)

Some would read David’s statement and be ready to run with it as if it were a “free hall pass” to go and pursue almost anything the HEART DESIRED. Others might consider his words and wonder about their truthfulness. We have all most likely had some desires that though they were not necessarily wrong, just didn’t work out for us.

Someone has said, “God cannot disappoint the desires that are of His own kindling or the hopes of His own raising.” [source: sentence sermons] I think therein lies the concept that can help us sort it all out. If our focus is merely on the desires we have “kindled”, we may see the light of some of those things flicker and go out. And if our hopes are only raised by our own estimation of things or that of others, we may be disappointed. Self -- especially due to our limited wisdom and view of the spectrum of life -- is the element that is most likely to cause us to misunderstand or misapply the above passage and throw our perspective off balance. However, if our expectations are based upon what God has clearly assured through His Word, and OUR DESIRE remains firmly fixed on His ultimate Will to work out, we will not be disappointed. Guarding against setting our expectations on our own self-centered desires, we are to learn to trust that God, in His broad view of life and eternity, has our best always in mind.

Paul encouraged…
“(1) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (2) Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and WE REJOICE IN HOPE OF THE GLORY OF GOD. (3) More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, (4) and endurance produces character, and character produces HOPE, (5) and HOPE DOES NOT PUT US TO SHAME, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:1-5 ESV)

Some of the things Paul listed we may not necessarily desire. Nevertheless, he referred to experiences of this realm that contribute to our spiritual growth. As we continue to trust in the Lord and delight in our association with Him, we receive the assurance of a hope that is based not upon our personal expectations, but upon the faithfulness and wisdom of God. May we be very conscious of seeking the DESIRES of a GOD-CENTERED HEART. There will ultimately be no shame for having held onto the expectations of such a hope as that.

Have a great day BEFRIENDING THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD!

"Saymeando!"

“Saymeando!” Do we know this word? Does it characterize our life? No, it is not from the Hebrew. Nor is it from the Greek. It is actually merely three words I stuck together: say, mean, and do. When it comes to others, we don’t always have control over what they say. Nor do we have control over the meaning behind their words, whether or not they are sincere. Neither do we have power over the actions of others. However, we do have that power over ourselves and -- with regard to others -- we can KEEP THEM IN OUR PRAYERS!

After Saul had been established as king over Israel because the people had wanted a king (1 Samuel 8:19-20), Samuel, now old and gray (1 Samuel 12:2), gave a farewell address to the nation. In that farewell he provided opportunity for his character to be scrutinized and the people acknowledged the complete integrity of his life lived before them. (1 Samuel 12:2-5) Samuel also reminded the people of the deliverance from Egypt, their history of turning away from God, and the leaders God had raised up to deliver them again and again. (1 Samuel 12:6-11) He then exhorted them regarding the importance of both they and their king continuing in obedience to God. (1 Samuel 12:14-15) Calling upon the Lord to send thunder and rain, the people were struck with great fear before the Lord. God’s power was to be recognized and respected. (1 Samuel 12:16-18) Acknowledging their sin before God the people then ASKED SAMUEL TO PRAY FOR THEM. (1 Samuel 12:19)

Samuel responded…
“(23) Moreover, AS FOR ME, FAR BE IT FROM ME THAT I SHOULD SIN AGAINST THE LORD BY CEASING TO PRAY FOR YOU, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. (24) Only fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. (25) But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.” (1 Samuel 12:23-25 ESV)

Reading this passage I was struck by how Samuel saw it as a sin to cease praying for the people. Knowing what their tendency was, he knew he needed to KEEP PRAYING FOR THEM. But is it not also wrong (even sin) for us to tell people we will KEEP THEM IN OUR PRAYERS and then fail to do so? Perhaps it would be a good idea to write down the prayer request and place it where we will see it to remind us that we said we would. Maybe we should even say at the time, “Let’s pray right now.”

“Saymeando!” SAY it! MEAN it! DO it! Hopefully others will do the same for us since we are all in need of prayer. We don’t even have to know all the details because we call upon the God Who knows. May unceasing prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17) continue.

Have a great day OF FAITHFUL PRAYER TO THE FAITHFUL FATHER!

Passing Beyond!

In school there is always the hope for a “passing” grade and the expectation of “passing” from one grade to another. Then there are games of various sorts that involve “passing”: football, ultimate frizbee, “passing” the buck, “passing” the blame, etc.

When I studied Greek in college, there were some words which were easier to remember than others due to word association. For example, the Greek word “ballo” which means “to cast or throw” was easy to remember because I associated “ballo” with a ball that could be thrown. Then there is the word “HUPERBALLO”. Perhaps at first sight you might think of a superball. I lost several of those as I was growing up because they bounced further than I had expected. The word “huperballo” literally means “to throw over or beyond.” Though that might have been what those superballs did, playing ball is not what Paul had in mind when he used the word.

In referring to the love of Christ, Paul stated…
“(19) and TO KNOW THE LOVE OF CHRIST THAT SURPASSES [huperballo] KNOWLEDGE, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:19)

Knowledge is wonderful. There are things we need to know that relate to life now and eternity. As much as we might know there are still many things we do not know. Gaining knowledge is a lifelong process and there are some things that will only be known in the realm to come. (note 1 Corinthians 13:12 and 1 John 3:2) This being true, we will experience the lack of understanding and wisdom we sometimes desire. However, Paul referred to coming to “know the LOVE OF CHRIST THAT SURPASSES (huperballo, beyond) KNOWLEDGE.” How can we come to know that which is “beyond” knowledge?

Note the passage again as it reads in the New Living Translation.
“MAY YOU EXPERIENCE THE LOVE OF CHRIST, THOUGH IT IS SO GREAT YOU WILL NEVER FULLY UNDERSTAND IT. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” [NLT © 1997, Tyndale House]

We can EXPERIENCE LOVE without completely understanding it or being able to fully explain it. Among several things Agur mentioned in Proverbs as being too wonderful and that he did not understand was the way of a man with a maiden. (Proverbs 30:18-19) I think he must have had the LOVE EXPERIENCE in mind and perhaps we have seen relationships that seemed to defy logic. However, on an even higher level, can we fully explain the love of God or the love of Christ Who gave Himself for such an unworthy people? (Romans 5:8) Sometimes love does defy logic. Sometimes love cannot be adequately explained. The truth about love is we don’t have to be able to explain it for it to be EXPERIENCED. Actions done in genuine love often convey what words cannot.

In light of the example of Christ, John exhorted…
“(16) BY THIS WE KNOW LOVE, that HE LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR US, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. (17) But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? (18) Little children, let us not LOVE in word or talk but IN DEED AND IN TRUTH.” (1 John 3:16-18 ESV)

If we have a true appreciation for the LOVE EXPERIENCED in Christ we should be compelled to help others EXPERIENCE LOVE in its genuineness and purity as well. Loving actions may cause the world to wonder. Others may not be able to explain such a love in the midst of a world that generally only loves those who love them. (note Matthew 5:44-46) As the demonstration of Christ’s love speaks powerfully to us, our loving actions can do the same. John also stated, “We love, BECAUSE HE [GOD] FIRST LOVED US.” (1 John 4:19 ESV) May His love that “surpasses knowledge” be channeled through our life to those around us.

Have a great day SEEKING FOR HIS LOVE TO ABIDE IN AND WORK THROUGH US!

Second Opinion?

Sometimes when an individual is diagnosed with an ailment that requires serious treatment, a second opinion is sought out to be sure the diagnosis is correct and the course of treatment suggested is the right option. When it comes to LIFE we can’t be too careful. However, there are also those who self-diagnose what ails them and then search for any doctor who will agree with them. This is also the way of some when it comes to spiritual matters.

Someone has said, “He who holds false doctrine holds it first in his own thinking and then seeks it in the Bible as a second source.” [source: sermon sentences]

Do we look to the Scriptures merely for passages that appear to support what we think, or do we truly seek to come to understand the Mind and Will of God? God’s Word is worthy of being the first and final word on the issues of life. His diagnosis of life’s spiritual ailments is true. His cure for the sin-sick soul is right. After all, He is the Creator of LIFE and knows what it takes to properly sustain LIFE. When it comes to our spiritual LIFE we cannot be too careful. We must genuinely seek to learn the truths of God so that we can let go of opinion and base life on the facts He has revealed.

To whom shall we go? Who has the answers? Though Jesus spoke words that He referred to as being “spirit and life” (John 6:63) not everyone believed. Some had great difficulty accepting what He said. That is still true of many today. However, His words must be reckoned with because they are what will someday judge us. (John 12:48)

After many turned away from Jesus, He asked the Twelve if they wanted to go away as well, and we read…

“(68) Simon Peter answered him, ‘LORD, TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE, (69) and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.’” (John 6:68-69 ESV)

Have we also believed? Have we also come to know? Have we been drawn to recognize what true LIFE is because we have allowed our Lord’s words to impact our LIFE? Accepting His word removes us from the fear of judgment, causing us to pass from death to LIFE. (John 5:24) May we daily be open to the words He has spoken.

Have a great day ABIDING DAILY IN THE LIFE GIVING WORD!

Being Grounded!

As I was growing up, one of the worst punishments my parents could deal out was for me to be grounded. To not be able to go anywhere other than church or school for a whole week (or two if I had been especially bad) was almost unbearable. Being grounded impacted me in a way that made me think seriously about my choices. Unlike other punishments that might be over and done with quickly, this one provided some extra time to think about what I would not do again. My parents’ ultimate intent in grounding me was to bring benefit to my life.

Though being grounded may have been very much against my personal desire, I do recognize the ultimate result was for good. Grounding can have a very positive side. We need grounding. We need something that restrains and causes us to give very serious thought to what our life choices are based on.

Paul prayed for the church at Ephesus to be inwardly strengthened by God …
“(17) so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith -- that you, being rooted and GROUNDED IN LOVE, (18) may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, (19) and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19 ESV)

The Greek word (themelioo) translated “grounded” is one which means to “lay a foundation”. What composes the foundation on which we are resting and building up our lives? What is it that we view as the support that provides a solid footing? It was “IN LOVE” that my parents grounded me so that I would learn to appreciate and LOVE that which is right. Paul’s mention of being “grounded IN LOVE” reveals that love can provide something very stable for life. Genuine LOVE compels us toward actions that benefit others while also restraining actions that might be inappropriate.

LOVE is a must for our life. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3) Where would we be without God’s LOVE? (Romans 5:8) Where would our life be headed without extending it? (1 John 3:10 & 14-15) LOVE should therefore be seen as basic to the foundation of our life. Because of the LOVE of my parents, they used grounding to help me lay a “foundation [(Gk.) themelion] of repentance” (Hebrews 6:1) that would aid me in moving on in life with a proper perspective. May we continue to allow a LOVE for God (and His Will) and a LOVE for others to become the basis on which our life is lived. This would be having our life grounded in a good and proper way.

Have a great day WELL ESTABLISHED IN LOVE!

Gigantically Great!

People get greatly excited about MEGA events and MEGA news. Sales adds herald MEGA selection and MEGA savings. The announcements go out and the people come running. So much hype! So much excitement! Nevertheless, how many times do people walk away with nothing because of limited stock or the offer was simply just not as good as it had seemed? Or how many come away with contentment unsatisfied, finding themselves searching for the next MEGA thing?

What excites us? What brings joy to our life? Are we still searching or have we found that which provides a sense of it that is lasting?

When it was time for Jesus to come onto life’s scene, the attention of shepherds was captured and we read…
“(10) And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I BRING YOU GOOD NEWS OF A GREAT JOY THAT WILL BE FOR ALL THE PEOPLE. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David A SAVIOR, who is CHRIST THE LORD.’” (Luke 2:10-11 ESV)

The Greek word translated “great” is “megas”, a word used in referring to much in quantity, degree, size, or status. The announcement of a Savior being born was heralded as good news of MEGA JOY! And though it excited the shepherds who went to see Jesus and made known to others the saying that had been told them (Luke 2:17), this MEGA JOY was intended to “be for all the people.” Has Jesus become the source of MEGA JOY for us? If we truly see Him as we ought He should be an abiding source of MEGA JOY. The best things we could ever gain and possess are associated with a life in Christ.

As Paul rejoiced over the faith of those in Ephesus and kept them in his prayers, he reminded them of what they had because of Jesus when he wrote…

“(18) having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may KNOW WHAT IS THE HOPE to which he has called you, WHAT ARE THE RICHES OF HIS GLORIOUS INHERITANCE in the saints, (19) and what is the IMMEASURABLE GREATNESS [(Gk.) “megathos”] OF HIS POWER toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might (20) that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,” (Ephesians 1:18-20 ESV).

Among the blessings that give reason for lasting MEGA JOY are the hope, the rich inheritance, and the “immeasurable” MEGA power at work for us who are in Christ. If we have a desire for true gain it is found in living for Christ in accordance with the Will of God. In fact, Paul stated that there is “GREAT [(Gk., “megas”) GAIN IN GODLINESS with contentment.” (1 Timothy 6:6)

Some stores may advertise as being the “savings place”, but that true place is found in Jesus Christ. May we truly experience the MEGA JOY that comes through recognizing the MEGA power and the MEGA blessings that are ours in Him.

Have a great day OF GIGANTIC JOY IN JESUS!

Transformers!

Remember the commercial for “Transformers” that went something like this: “Transformers! -- More than meets the eye!” I think these toys were designed not by toy makers, but by engineers. They were designed to look like one thing, but after turning here and twisting there and popping out somewhere else, you ended up with something completely different. What a design! Some of them changed in ingenious ways. However, they only changed in accordance with their design. The process had to be done the right way.

Paul, in writing to the church at Rome made mention of a proper way of bringing transformation to our lives that would be IN ACCORDANCE TO GOD’S DESIGN. He wrote…

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWAL OF YOUR MIND, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2 ESV)

Focus on the first part of that verse for a moment. There is a likeness we are not to conform to. That is the pattern of this world. This phrase has been translated “don't let the world squeeze you into its mold.” Oh, how it tries! Oh, how it pushes! Oh, how it squeezes! But we need to resist.

Note the verse again from the New Living Translation [© 1997, Tyndale House]…

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but LET GOD TRANSFORM YOU INTO A NEW PERSON BY CHANGING THE WAY YOU THINK. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect HIS WILL really is.” (NLT)

The best resistance against the world’s pressure to conform to its standard is to have the strength of a proper inner focus. It is a power which truly is “more than meets the eye” as God begins to transform our lives into BECOMING WHAT HE HAS DESIGNED for us to become. As our minds are continually renewed through a focus on His will we become more and more LIKE THE IMAGE HE CREATED US TO POSSESS. That image is HIS IMAGE! And He makes it possible!

The world wants to “toy” with us, but God is the “Engineer” with a transformation design which truly is “more than meets the eye!”

Have a great day BEING TRANSFORMED BY GOD!

Our Teacher!

Today, the first day of April, is focused on by some as “April Fools’ Day.” Also called “All Fools’ Day” it has become known as a day for practical jokes. This custom is noted as having begun in France in 1564 when a change in the calendar shifted New Year’s Day from April first to January first. Those who continued to observe April first were ridiculed for their foolishness. [source: The Concord Desk Encyclopedia”, © 1982]

A day for practical jokes is one thing, but when foolishness becomes the reality of living, it is a very serious matter. Some who consider themselves very wise may be so only in their own estimation. Someone has cautioned, “He who will not learn of anyone except himself has a fool for a teacher.” [source: list of sentence sermons]

Solomon said it this way:
“Do you see A MAN who is WISE IN HIS OWN EYES? There is MORE HOPE FOR A FOOL than for him.” (Proverbs 26:12 ESV)

Even a fool might sense the need for correction. However, too high an estimation of self often leads to blinding one for recognizing the true need. Conceit and pride crowd out the humility needed for openness to counsel and INSTRUCTION.

Are we seeking to learn from beyond ourselves? We can know no more than what we know if we only learn from ourselves. God’s Word provides wisdom that is practical for all of life. Are we remaining open to the INSTRUCTION He offers?

Solomon exhorted…
“KEEP HOLD OF INSTRUCTION; do not let go; guard her for SHE IS YOUR LIFE.” (Proverbs 4:13 ESV)

Some suggest that knowledge is power. There is some truth to that. However, Solomon indicated being open to INSTRUCTION is life! God’s practical teachings help us to live the best life we possibly can. Our acceptance of INSTRUCTION also potentially impacts more than our own life, for Solomon also stated…

“Whoever HEEDS INSTRUCTION IS ON THE PATH TO LIFE, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.” (Proverbs 10:17 ESV)

To ignore the INSTRUCTION OF GOD is to despise ourselves (Proverbs 15:32) and would we not agree that sounds like a pretty foolish thing to do? God’s Word is adequate to provide the teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness necessary for equipping us to live and work to His glory and praise. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) May the learning continue that our life may be properly based and directed.

Have a great day MADE WISE BY THE WORD!
