Need For Preparedness!

Five years ago today at about 10:55 a.m. we experienced some significant shaking going on in the western part of Washington State. The news in our area over the last several days has been reminding us of that earthquake which became known as the “Nisqually Quake”. This quake was centered south of Seattle and northwest of Olympia, but the tremors were reportedly felt as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah, up into Canada, and down into Oregon. Though this earthquake measured 6.8 on the Richter Scale and was reported to be one of the strongest in Washington State history, there have been quakes in other parts of the country and around the world that have caused more significant damage as well as loss of life than this one.

Among the discussions and news bulletins immediately following this quake February 28, 2001, was a focus on the need for preparedness. That same discussion continues today as the five year anniversary is remembered. Experts say the BIG ONE is coming, but how many have made preparations? As time passes, the memory of the possibility of more quakes seems to fade with people going back to their usual routines and preparations are neglected.

The BIG ONE! Who can predict when it will be? There is much in life that can take us by surprise and it is difficult (if not impossible) to fully prepare for every possible happening. Therefore we need to focus on preparation for that which is among the most significant to life.

Jesus encouraged the disciples that He was going to go and prepare a place for them. (John 14:2) His desire was that where He was, there they would ultimately be also. (John 14:3) We can be assured that what Jesus prepares will be completely adequate and worth entering into. Nevertheless we must be prepared for when the time comes for departure from this realm into the next. Have we focused on preparing or are we living as though we think we have all the time in the world? It is far too easy for time to get away from us and the greatest tragedy would be for of all the events of life, for the BIG ONE to come and we find ourselves not ready to meet the Lord.

During Jesus’ ministry He referred to His coming to be like during the days of Noah. Noah tried to warn before the BIG ONE came, but the people would not listen. Everyone continued to go on with life as usual right up to the time Noah and his family entered the ark and then the flood came and swept them away. (Matthew 24:37-39)

Jesus went on to give another analogy as He exhorted toward preparedness.
“(42) Therefore, STAY AWAKE, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. (43) But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. (44) Therefore YOU ALSO MUST BE READY, FOR THE SON OF MAN IS COMING AT AN HOUR YOU DO NOT EXPECT.” (Matthew 24:42-44 ESV)

Heaven has been referred to as a prepared place for a prepared people. Are we? Of all the great events and happenings of life the truly BIG ONE is yet to come and we must be prepared. Let us remain alert to the way in which we are going about each day of our life. May our actions and choices continually be with eternity in mind.

Have a great day LIVING EVER PREPARED TO MEET THE LORD!

Bright Beginnings!

New beginnings generally come with a sense of excitement encouraged by a RAY OF HOPE for a glorious future. My attention has always been drawn to the RAYS of sunshine breaking through an opening in the clouds. When it comes to the events of life are we constantly mindful of the RAYS OF HOPE that pierce the darkness to encourage us on?

When God began bringing life into existence, we read…
“(1) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (2) The earth was without form and void, and DARKNESS WAS OVER THE FACE OF THE DEEP. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (3) And God said, ‘LET THERE BE LIGHT,’ and THERE WAS LIGHT. (4) And God saw that THE LIGHT WAS GOOD. And God separated the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:1-4 ESV)

As God began His wondrous work of creation He started with light and that light was good! This was the beginning of new things. It was the starting of new life. What a marvelous world God created in which to place mankind. It was a bright beginning in the history of humanity with a marvelous HOPE of an abiding relationship with the Creator.

As we read the history of mankind unfolding through the Scriptures, it doesn’t take long to begin seeing the struggles in maintaining a proper focus for the life God was set on providing. However, even in the midst of sin and rebellion against God and His Will, there were RAYS OF HOPE heralded by His prophets. And just as “in the beginning” God brought forth light to dispel the darkness, there was another era (dispensation) to come that would also begin with radiant light.

In Isaiah we read…
“(1) Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. (2) For behold, DARKNESS SHALL COVER THE EARTH, and thick darkness the peoples; BUT THE LORD WILL ARISE UPON YOU, AND HIS GLORY WILL BE SEEN UPON YOU. (3) And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” (Isaiah 60:1-3 ESV) [For verse 3 note also the reference in Revelation 21:22-26)

This was a reference to the future glory of Israel. Just as “in the beginning” there was physical light to dispel the physical darkness, God would provide spiritual light that would dispel spiritual darkness. When Jesus, the Messiah and “TRUE LIGHT, which enlightens everyone” (John 1:9) came onto life’s scene, He was the bright RAY OF HOPE to break through the darkness of error, sin, and unrighteousness.

To be “separated from Christ” is to remain in darkness and to be without hope. (Ephesians 2:12-13) However, just as in the beginning “God separated the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4), so in Christ we can be separated from the darkness as we live in His light. Regardless of how dark things may seem to be in this world, He is still the RAY OF HOPE to help us see our way and encourage us on. Our new beginning in Christ at baptism was “to be born again to a LIVING HOPE” (1 Peter 1:3 ESV) and an eternal inheritance that awaits us in heaven. (1 Peter 1:4) May the RAYS OF HOPE in Him continue to draw our attention upward.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE BRIGHT FUTURE THAT’S OURS IN CHRIST!

"ITIES"

Have you ever heard of “ities”? I’m not sure exactly what they might be except they could be something of the past since they have been referred to in the sense of FORMER ones or EARLIER ones being called “prior” “ities”. “PRIOR - ITIES”? “PRIORITIES!” That’s it! That’s what they are -- “priorities”!

Well, now that we have the word right, do we have THEM right? Or are they something of the past?

What do you keep putting first? What is most important to you? School? Work? Band? Chorus? Sports? Recreation? A hobby? A boy friend or girl friend? Food? Travel? Personal recognition or achievements? What? Where is God in connection with your priorities? Where is His church in relation to your priorities? What is it that matters most to you? Are you so caught up in the “urgent” things that you may have forgotten the IMPORTANT things? If you say serving God is your number one priority -- does your life really show it? Take a look at what draws most of your time and attention. Is God really NUMBER ONE in your life?

Jesus said…
“But SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)

A charge against the church in Ephesus was that they had forsaken their “FIRST LOVE” (Revelation 2:4) and thus were told…
“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; REPENT, AND DO THE WORKS YOU DID AT FIRST. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.” (Revelation 2:5 ESV)

If our priorities are not right, let us return to our devotion to God and our Lord Jesus. Let them remain our FIRST LOVE. In so doing the other things of life will fall into their proper place as well.

Have a great day PUTTING GOD FIRST!

Zechariah And Elizabeth!

God chose Zechariah and Elizabeth to be the parents of the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah. This husband and wife were both described as being “righteous before God.” (Luke 1:5) Zechariah was serving as priest at the time he was given the news that he and his wife would have a son. After being given a description of the character and mission of John, how did this man of God respond to the news?

We read…
“And Zechariah said to the angel, ‘HOW SHALL I KNOW THIS? For I AM AN OLD MAN, and MY WIFE IS ADVANCED IN YEARS.’” (Luke 1:18 ESV)

Can we understand his struggle? Sure God had done this with Abraham and Sarah centuries before, but how could Zechariah be sure such a thing would happen again? Because Zechariah did not BELIEVE the words spoken to him, he was made unable to speak until after they were fulfilled. (Luke 1:20)

Now, consider Elizabeth. We are not given a glimpse of her response to the news given to her husband, but we do get a record of her focus with regard to what was to be fulfilled through her cousin Mary.

Note the FAITH of Elizabeth when she was visited by Mary.
“And why is this granted to me that the MOTHER OF MY LORD should come to me?” (Luke 1:43 ESV)

Did you note how she acknowledged the Lordship of Jesus even before He came onto life’s scene. Granted, she had already personally experienced the fulfillment of one of God’s promises in that she was presently carrying John in her womb. However, we should still be struck by the FAITH in her words to Mary who was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. Mary had been encouraged by the angel Gabriel that “NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD.” (Luke 1:37 ESV) That was something both Zechariah and Elizabeth had come to KNOW WITH CERTAINTY!

We may be astonished at some of the things God has promised to bring about. Like Zechariah we may wonder how we can know it to be so. However, remember that even Balaam noted God as the One who did what He said and fulfilled what He spoke. (Numbers 23:19)

There is a big difference between the questions of “How CAN this be?” and “How WILL it be?” The latter of these two was asked by Mary. (Luke 1:34). The first is along the lines of wondering how one can be sure of it and seems to question the possibility for it to happen while the second merely wonders how or in what manner it will come about. May we nurture a FAITH that accepts what God has said He will do even when we wonder regarding the ways in which it might unfold. OUR GOD IS ABLE!

Have a great day ASSURED OF ALL GOD HAS AFFIRMED TO BE!

Cord Of Remembrance!

In the 1960’s one of the philosophies of life promoted by some was “If it feels good, do it.” There may be many in prison who have followed that advice to one extent or another and others who have negatively impacted their own life or the lives of others by pursuing their own heart’s desire.

Another expression that may not always be true is “What you see is what you get.” There are many things which are not exactly as they appear. Quite often there is more than meets the eye. Also, if one only accepts what they can see there is much that can be missed out on.

When life and religion become merely that which is associated with one’s own feelings and vision it becomes difficult to find consistency and stability needed in life. Such can open the door for being easily led astray by that which merely appeals to one’s own heart and vision. Knowing that one’s own heart and own eyes are not always dependable guides, God had Moses command the nation of Israel to make tassels for the corners of their garments. (Numbers 15:38) These tassels were not merely for ornamental purposes, but were intended to be a reminder of where PROPER GUIDANCE would continually be found.

We read…
“(39)And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and REMEMBER ALL THE COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD, TO DO THEM, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after. (40) So you shall REMEMBER AND DO ALL MY COMMANDMENTS, and BE HOLY TO YOUR GOD.” (Numbers 15:39-40 ESV)

The purpose was clearly stated for the focus to be directed away from one’s “own heart” and “own eyes” to the specific commands God had provided. Jesus would later accuse some of the Jewish leaders of drawing attention to their “spirituality” by making the tassels (or fringes) of their garments long. (Matthew 23:5) They were so busy focusing on being seen that they did not see themselves as they should. With their focus not resting solidly on that which those tassels were to be a constant reminder, though they may have been highly respected and appeared holy to those around them, their hypocrisy was clearly visible to the eye of God.

We too should be careful to not depend merely upon our own heart and eyes. We need to continually seek the GUIDANCE OF GOD’S WORD so that we can truly feel good about our life and see even the unseen that provides the hope to press on. May God’s Word continually be a cord of remembrance that binds our whole life together and draws us ever closer to Him.

Have a great day LACING LIFE WITH EACH STRAND OF GOD’S TRUTH!

Christian Camaraderie!

It has been noted that the truest sign of friendship is the ability to SINCERELY SHARE THE JOY AND ACCOMPLISHMENT OF OTHERS without a trace of envy. Perhaps we could say that would also be the truest sign of Christianity. To respond toward each other in Christ in this way would make the existence of a proper love for one another evident and would therefore be a sign of proper discipleship to Him. (John 13:35)

There are some who seem to view almost everything in life with a sense of competition. Such a perspective makes it difficult (if not impossible) to REJOICE WITH OTHERS in their successes or whatever has drawn attention to them. Some are so set on getting the glory or notoriety that they can’t stand it when another gets the attention. This attitude is not a mark of spirituality, but rather the sign of a focus that is still fleshly. (note 1 Corinthians 3:1-3) It is the selfish desire of the flesh that gives rise to envy and jealousy toward one another. Since we are in Christ, such a spirit is to be put to death. (Galatians 5:24) How well are we doing?

Paul admonished the church at Galatia that…
“(25) If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. (26) Let us NOT BECOME CONCEITED, provoking one another, ENVYING ONE ANOTHER.” (Galatians 5:25-26 ESV)

When we truly love one another as we ought, that love should crowd out the tendency toward envy because “love does not envy” (1 Corinthians 13:4), but rather “REJOICES WITH THE TRUTH.” (1 Corinthians 13:6) One truth to bear in mind is that we as Christians are to be drawn together in harmony with Christ and so with each other.

Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul exhorted…
“(1) So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, (2) complete my joy by being of the SAME MIND, having the SAME LOVE, being IN FULL ACCORD and OF ONE MIND. (3) DO NOTHING FROM RIVALRY OR CONCEIT, but IN HUMILITY COUNT OTHERS MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN YOURSELVES.” (Philippians 2:1-3 ESV)

There is the spirit that allows us to sincerely REJOICE WITH OTHERS in what they have accomplished and the attention they have received. Paul exemplified this spirit in acknowledging himself as merely one of God’s many servants involved in the work of reaching others. (1 Corinthians 3:5-6) He felt no sense of competition with others who proclaimed the truth of Jesus, even when their motivation may not have been what it should, but rather REJOICED THAT CHRIST WAS PREACHED. (Philippians 1:15-18) May we sincerely REJOICE IN THE PART all can have in the ministry of Christ while we seek to encourage each other in labors together in accordance with God’s Will for His ultimate glory.

Have a great day KNOWING THE WINNING SPIRIT OF ONENESS IN CHRIST!

From Criticism To Compliment! (part 4 of 4)

After having her actions referred to as being wasteful (Mark 14:4) Jesus turned to those who scolded her by calling her actions “beautiful” (Mark 14:6) and praising her for having done “what she could.” (Mark 14:8) Note the third complimentary statement Jesus made regarding her action of having poured the ointment over Him.

Again we read…
“(6) But Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? SHE HAS DONE A BEAUTIFUL THING to me. (7) For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. (8) SHE HAS DONE WHAT SHE COULD; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. (9) And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, WHAT SHE HAS DONE WILL BE TOLD IN MEMORY OF HER.’” (Mark 14:6-9 ESV)

Thirdly, Jesus drew attention to her actions as an EXAMPLE that would be told wherever the gospel would be proclaimed. The “MEMORY” of her actions would remain alive. They would not be forgotten. In fact, here we are almost two thousand years later noting her actions again. That’s the way it is with actions that are EXEMPLARY. The REMEMBRANCE of them seems to surface again and again. And even those actions that may not be remembered by many are NEVER FORGOTTEN BY GOD.

The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(10) For GOD IS NOT SO UNJUST AS TO OVERLOOK YOUR WORK AND THE LOVE THAT YOU SHOWED FOR HIS SAKE IN SERVING THE SAINTS, as you still do. (11) And we desire each one of you to SHOW THE SAME EARNESTNESS to have the full assurance of hope UNTIL THE END, (12) so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” (Hebrews 6:10-12 ESV)

Whatever works we do in accordance with God’s Will, WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN OR OVERLOOKED. God takes note of each one of them and we will receive the eternal reward He has promised. May we each continue to press on in works to His glory and praise.

Have a great day KNOWING THE ONE WHO ALWAYS NOTICES!

From Criticism To Compliment! (part 3 of 4)

Following the criticism the woman received from those who observed her pouring the ointment over Jesus, He complimented her act as a “beautiful thing.” Note the second statement Jesus made regarding this woman’s actions.

Again we read…
“(6) But Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? SHE HAS DONE A BEAUTIFUL THING TO ME. (7) For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. (8) SHE HAS DONE WHAT SHE COULD; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.’” (Mark 14:6-8 ESV)

The second compliment was that she had “DONE WHAT SHE COULD.” Perhaps there were other things she would like to have done, but the thing she COULD DO, that she did. Jesus validated her actions and note them as preparatory to His burial. Unlike others, Jesus received this service from her before His death.

There is only so much we can do in the varying situations of life. Some do nothing. Others seem to do only as much as is needful to get by. Perhaps we have a desire to do more, but are we at least DOING WHAT WE CAN?

Encouraging the Corinthians in following through with a commitment they had made earlier to help in a collection for needy saints in Judea, Paul stated…
“(10) And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. (11) So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it OUT OF WHAT YOU HAVE. (12) For if the readiness is there, it is ACCEPTABLE ACCORDING TO WHAT A PERSON HAS, NOT ACCORDING TO WHAT HE DOES NOT HAVE.” (2 Corinthians 8:10-12 ESV)

The Corinthians had possessed a desire to help and Paul encouraged them to follow through with that desire. He also encouraged them that God’s expectation was only with regard to what they had to offer. How could one give more than that?

God does not expect anything more from us than what we have to offer. Are we at least offering that in service to Him? Though others might criticize the efforts we put forth as being small, the Lord knows when we have DONE WHAT WE COULD. Remember how Jesus praised the widow who gave WHAT SHE HAD out of her poverty, declaring it to be more than what was given by others out of their wealth. (Mark 12:41-44) The amount -- great or small -- is not as relevant as the willingness to step forward and DO WHAT WE CAN. That is the action that gains the Lord’s approval. May we serve to receive His praise.

Have a great day CHEERFULLY OFFERING WHAT WE ARE ABLE!

From Criticism To Compliment! (part 2 of 4)

Yesterday we noted the criticism a woman received who anointed Jesus while He was dining in the home of a man named Simon. Jesus quickly spoke in defense of this woman’s actions. Today, let us consider the first of three compliments associated with what this woman did.

We read…
“(6) But Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? SHE HAS DONE A BEAUTIFUL THING to me. (7) For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.’” (Mark 14:6-7 ESV)

First of all Jesus called this woman’s actions toward Him a “BEAUTIFUL THING.” What she did was accepted by Him as preparation for His burial, something others went to do after His burial, but could not fulfill because He had already risen. (Mark 16:1-6). This generous gift was offered with unselfish love for the Lord. This was the time. This was her opportunity. She took it and the Lord accepted her actions as a BEAUTIFUL expression of grateful devotion to Him.

Some see beauty where there is actually ugliness. Jesus noted some among the Jewish leaders whom He described as “whitewashed tombs, which outwardly APPEAR BEAUTIFUL, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.” (Matthew 23:27 ESV) Then there are others like these that had criticized the woman who anointed Jesus who were unable to see the BEAUTY of her actions as Jesus did, but only an ugly waste.

Service for the Lord and to His glory should always be viewed as a BEAUTIFUL THING and never a waste of time or energy. No service should be viewed as too small or beneath us when the opportunity presents itself. It is BEAUTIFUL HANDS that offer even a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name and receive a reward. (Matthew 10:42) Paul referred to the BEAUTIFUL FEET of those who would share the good news about Jesus. (Romans 10:15) And Peter pointed to the IMPERISHABLE BEAUTY of a woman’s gentle and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:4), a BEAUTY that far excels that of all the glittering diamonds in the world.

It has been said that BEAUTY is in the eye of the beholder. As the Lord beholds our life it is His estimation which matters most. May we truly recognize the depth of BEAUTY as it is acknowledged by Him and the various ways in which it can be exhibited in our life.

Have a great day LIVING A BEAUTIFUL LIFE OF GOLDEN DEEDS!

From Criticism To Compliment! (part 1 of 4)

Within days of Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, He was in the home of a man called “Simon the leper” who lived in Bethany. (Mark 14:3) While those gathered were reclining at the table, there was a woman who came in with an alabaster flask of expensive ointment and began pouring it over Jesus. What followed was quite the contrast between the reaction of Jesus and that of some who appear to have been shocked by the sight.

Note the criticism directed at the woman.
“(4) There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “WHY WAS THE OINTMENT WASTED like that? (5) For this ointment COULD HAVE BEEN SOLD for more than three hundred denarii AND GIVEN TO THE POOR.” And THEY SCOLDED HER.” (Mark 14:4-5 ESV)

Those who CRITICIZED saw the action as A WASTE because the ointment could have really met a need among the poor. Three hundred denarii would have been three hundred day’s wages. However, was there truly genuine concern for the poor being expressed? John’s Gospel notes this complaint as being associated with Judas who apparently had more concern for the money than he did for the poor. (John 12:4-6) For the woman to have been CRITICIZED for her actions, would that not also have been a CRITICISM of Jesus for having not stopped her? He accepted her actions as a gift to Him.

Moving on through the text we quickly see how the action this woman was SCOLDED for was complimented and praised by Jesus. In fact, the passage reveals three compliments associated with this woman’s actions. Lord willing we will consider these over the next three days. For now, may we focus on striving for our life to be marked by a continual abounding in work for Jesus and His glory, for such will not be in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58) This world may scold us and CRITICIZE our actions as being foolish or wasteful, but that is fine if what we are doing is complimented by our Lord. It is His estimation of our life that counts most. Let us keep that in mind as we press on in service to His glory.

Have a great day UNASHAMEDLY SERVING THE LORD!

Desire's Partner!

It is good to have drive. We need a force behind us that moves us into action. We need an inner drive that spurs us on in life. Without such desire little will be accomplished by us. However, the possession of the desire is not sufficient by itself. There is another element that must be associated with our desire.

Solomon advised…
“DESIRE WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE IS NOT GOOD, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.” (Proverbs 19:2 ESV)

Are we all familiar with the expression “Haste makes waste”? Just launching into things because we have the desire to do them may end up wasting energy, resources, and time, as well as bringing about undesirable results. It is good to give some thought to what we desire to do. Proper KNOWLEDGE helps us shape and fine-tune our desires so that the actions can produce the right kind of results. Ambitious drive without adequate KNOWLEDGE can lead to really missing the mark!

Paul referred to those who had “a zeal for God, but not according to KNOWLEDGE” and in the pursuit of their own righteousness, they were missing the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:2-3) May we keep the partnership of desire and KNOWLEDGE working in our life so that we will be able to remain on course in the Way and Will of God.

Have a great day IMPLEMENTING THE DESIRES OF GOD!

Who Counts?

Abraham was told to look up at the sky (Genesis 15:5) and if he could number the stars, that was representative of his offspring. Who can number the stars? What a promise! What a blessing! God singled out this one man through whom to begin working out a great plan for the ultimate blessing of people from all nations. (Genesis 22:18)

One of the psalmists declared regarding God…
“(4) He determines the number of THE STARS; HE GIVES TO ALL OF THEM THEIR NAMES. (5) Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.” (Psalm 147:4 ESV)

And in Isaiah we read…
“Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? HE WHO BRINGS OUT THEIR HOST BY NUMBER, CALLING THEM ALL BY NAME, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26 ESV)

Though we cannot count the stars, God knows each one of them that He has created and calls them BY NAME. If God is so intimately mindful of that part of His creation, why should we ever question His awareness of each individual as the part of His creation created in His image?

When God asked Moses to number the males of Israel who were twenty years and older able to go to war (Numbers 1:2-3) He did not leave it to Moses to select a representative to help with the counting. Instead, God chose one man from each of the twelve tribes, mentioning each one BY NAME.

God told Moses…
“(5) And THESE ARE THE NAMES OF THE MEN WHO SHALL ASSIST YOU. From Reuben, ELIZUR the son of Shedeur; (6) from Simeon, SHELUMIEL the son of Zurishaddai; (7) from Judah, NAHSHON the son of Amminadab; (8) from Issachar, NETHANEL the son of Zuar; (9) from Zebulun, ELIAB the son of Helon; (10) from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, ELISHAMA the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, GAMALIEL the son of Pedahzur; (11) from Benjamin, ABIDAN the son of Gideoni; (12) from Dan, AHIEZER the son of Ammishaddai; (13) from Asher, PAGIEL the son of Ochran; (14) from Gad, ELIASAPH the son of Deuel; (15) from Naphtali, AHIRA the son of Enan.” (Numbers 1:5-15 ESV)

Not only did God mention these twelve individuals from all the nation of Israel BY NAME, but noted the names of their fathers as well. Those names may not mean much to us, but to the individuals named, God’s personal acknowledgement of them surely meant something. God was mindful of the nation as a whole, but His interest and familiarity was also with each individual soul.

Jesus referred to the good shepherd who knows his own sheep BY NAME and leads them. (John 10:3) He then stated…
“(14) I am the good shepherd. I KNOW MY OWN and my own know me, (15) just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10:14-15 ESV)

We look at the sky and we may know the names of some of the constellations, but for the most part the stars look like stars. We can’t count them and we do not know their names. When we look at a flock of sheep we can acknowledge seeing a bunch of them, but we may not be able to tell one individual sheep from another. Of the billions of people populating the world, we may know a few intimately, but to acknowledge God’s ability to call the stars BY NAME, and the Lord’s ability to call His sheep BY NAME, should encourage us regarding their full awareness of our individual life. Jesus stated that as He and the Father intimately know each other (but of course), so is His acknowledgement of each one of the sheep of His flock. Though we might not be known by others, to be known by Him is what really counts!

Have a great day KNOWING TO WHOM WE MATTER!

Accepting His Torch!

One of the events that precedes the beginning of the Olympic Games is the passing of the torch from nation to nation until it arrives where the competition is to take place. Upon its arrival the torch is used to light the flame that will burn continuously as the various competitions are played out. Each event of the games is scrutinized by judges to ensure that all participants compete according to the rules, for that is the way it must be. (2 Timothy 2:5) This is to be true of life as well.

In life there are those who accept the “official” torch while others seem to want to carry their own. People get on fire over all kinds of things, some good and some not so good. Not all the things people get fired up about are in harmony with the Will of God. We need to be mindful of whose “torch” we have allowed to ignite ours and give us light.

Note Isaiah’s picture of this distinction.
“(10) Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? LET HIM WHO WALKS IN DARKNESS AND HAS NO LIGHT TRUST IN THE NAME OF THE LORD and RELY ON HIS GOD. (11) Behold, all you who kindle a fire, who equip yourselves with burning torches! Walk by the light of your fire, and by the torches that you have kindled! This you have from my hand: you shall lie down in torment.” (Isaiah 50:10-11 ESV)

The encouragement here was to look in trust to the LIGHT OF GOD. Left to ourselves we will walk in darkness. We need to accept “His torch”; be ENLIGHTENED by the message He has sent and revealed to us! Nevertheless we may see many around us continuing to kindle their own fire, equipping themselves with torches they have lit themselves. Jeremiah pointed out that these who failed to walk in GOD’S LIGHT (not accepting the “torch” from His hand), but rather chose their own light would still receive something from His hand -- torment in which to lie.

One of the psalmists prayed…
“Send out YOUR LIGHT AND YOUR TRUTH; LET THEM LEAD ME; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!” (Psalm 43:3 ESV)

What flame has ignited our “torch”? Is it our own, the world’s, or is it God’s? From Whom are we seeking ENLIGHTENMENT for life? It is not our own message or illumination we are to pass on, but rather that which we have received from God. May we continue to accept the ENLIGHTENMENT God has handed down so that our life may be ignited by a steadfast trust in His Sovereign Will. Then as we pass God’s truth on to others they can be assured of receiving LIGHT that is truly adequate for dispelling the darkness of this world and leading them to God.

Have a great day WINNING IN LIFE BY THE LIGHT OF GOD’S WORD!

The Name We Wear!

In the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) given to Moses on the tablets of stone, the third command dealing with a proper relationship with God warned against taking “the NAME OF THE LORD your God in vain.” (Exodus 20:7) To take GOD’S NAME in vain was to use it irreverently or flippantly. God was to be honored. HIS NAME was to associated with holiness and righteousness. Because of the seriousness of this command the Jews were fearful to even say the NAME of the LORD.

In Leviticus we read…
“(1) And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (2) ‘Speak to Aaron and his sons so that they abstain from the holy things of the people of Israel, which they dedicate to me, so that they DO NOT PROFANE MY HOLY NAME: I am the LORD.’” (Leviticus 22:1-2 ESV)

The things of God were to be handled in the way prescribed by God. The priests were to receive their portion of the various offerings, but the things dedicated to God were to be kept from. To handle the holy things dedicated to God in ways other than what God had commanded was to PROFANE HIS HOLY NAME. Writing to the church at Rome, Paul referred to those who boasted about their relationship to the law yet dishonored God by breaking His law as being guilty of causing the NAME OF GOD TO BE BLASPHEMED among the Gentiles. (Romans 2:23-24)

We see, then, that not only could one be guilty of sinning by misusing the NAME OF GOD, but HIS HOLY NAME could be profaned by actions as well. Do we reverence the HOLY NAME OF GOD and of our Lord Jesus Christ so that when we speak our genuine adoration, respect, and trust are evident? As we go about the actions of daily life, what do the things we do and the choices we make say about the NAME?

What does it mean for us to wear the name CHRISTIAN? Should it not mean for us to be bringing the attention not so much to self, but to CHRIST whose HOLY NAME is associated with us? What do our actions and reactions in life say about the NAME we wear?

Peter exhorted…
“Yet if anyone suffers as a CHRISTIAN, let him not be ashamed, but let him GLORIFY GOD IN THAT NAME.” (1 Peter 4:16 ESV)

We shouldn’t be afraid to speak GOD’S NAME or the NAME OF JESUS. However, we should do so reverently since as CHRISTIANS He is the Lord of our life! We should also recognize how our actions must be in accordance with the Lord’s Will so that it is He Who is glorified in our life. May we live in such a way that both word and deed will cause others to think well and speak well of the CHRIST we love and serve.

Have a great day LIVING TO GLORIFY THE HOLY NAME OF THE LORD!

Love Of Our Life!

The fourteenth of February is noted on the calendar as being “Valentine’s Day”. On this day it has become traditional for valentines (without any real love attachment) to be exchanged by school children. However, cards, flowers, chocolates, jewelry, candlelight dinners, etc. are also given and enjoyed as tokens of AFFECTIONS that truly do exist between individuals. Some have even chosen this day to propose marriage to the one they have come to view as the “love of their life.” I pray that when you come to that point in your life you will focus on the development of that relationship with all the seriousness and commitment God intended to be associated with the oneness of marriage. For those of us who are married, our quest should be to exemplify God’s intent for marriage, keeping it honorable and holy. (Hebrews 13:4)

When we consider in a general sense the “love of our life”, it is of paramount importance to consider where our AFFECTIONS rest. Remember Jesus pointed out that where our treasure is, that is where our heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21) What kind of life focus do we treasure? Are our AFFECTIONS fixed on the right things?

Note Paul’s description of MISDIRECTED AFFECTIONS!
“(2) For people will be LOVERS OF SELF, LOVERS OF MONEY, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, UNGRATEFUL, unholy, (3) HEARTLESS, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, NOT LOVING GOOD, (4) treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, LOVERS OF PLEASURE RATHER THAN LOVERS OF GOD, (5) having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Timothy 3:2-5 ESV)

Don’t we see a lot of that going on in the world today? How important does being “right” seem to be within society in general? There is a song by Luther Ingram that states, “If loving you is wrong I don’t wanna be right.” The focus of that sentiment is more on what “I want” than on what is “right.” Such is the focus of many in this world! At the heart of selfishness, greed, ingratitude, evil, and simply living for worldly pleasure is the misdirection of the AFFECTIONS away from God and His Will to merely what self desires.

Where does the proper focus of AFFECTIONS begin? Jesus exhorted the disciples…
“IF YOU LOVE ME, YOU WILL KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.” (John 14:15 ESV)
It is foolishness for one to claim to love the Lord and make no attempt to carry out His Will. A love that has a genuine interest in carrying out His Will should be seen as the basic foundation for our life.

John stated…
“For THIS IS THE LOVE OF GOD, THAT WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. And his commandments are not burdensome.” (1 John 5:3 ESV)

This is what true love is all about! (note also 2 John 6) Does such love truly mark what represents the “love of our life”; the focus of the AFFECTIONS of our entire being (heart, soul and mind) on God? (Matthew 22:37) If our AFFECTIONS first find their resting place there, our love will be properly directed in the other areas of life as well. May we truly seek for our love to be right in God’s sight.

Have a great day DOMINATED BY A SERIOUS AND SINCERE GODLY LOVE!

Weighty Light Significance!

God is amazing. His power is well beyond what we can even ask or think. (Ephesians 3:20) We should be encouraged that even in God’s greatness He is still mindful of our individual lives. However, the spectrum of His plans have always been quite broad. As God created the world He brought LIGHT into existence. (Genesis 1:3) That LIGHT was not a LIGHT thing because life depends upon it. The same is true with regard to how vital God’s spiritual LIGHT is to our existence now and for eternity.

As Isaiah prophesied regarding the Messiah and the message of hope in Him, among the statements made we read…

“he says: ‘It is TOO LIGHT A THING that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I WILL MAKE YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE NATIONS, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’” (Isaiah 49:6 ESV)

Paul mentioned this prophecy in association with the carrying out of his ministry of the Gospel of Jesus. (Acts 13:47) As the Jews waited in great anticipation for the coming of their Messiah, they needed to bear in mind the full extent of God’s plan. Though the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham (Genesis 22:18; 26:4) for blessing mankind came through one nation of people, it was too LIGHT a thing for Jesus to come only to give Himself for that nation. The weight of the matter is that Jesus Christ is to be recognized as the LIGHT for all nations. He is still the “LIGHT of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5) needed by mankind to find their way to the Father. (John 14:6) Without His LIGHT we would be left with the heaviness of darkness and the weight of the guilt of our sins.

As we enjoy walking in the LIGHT of our Lord, let us never view what He has done for us as a LIGHT thing. Our eternal salvation depends upon Him and the redemption He has provided through His blood. May we continue to extend the message of that hope to those around us.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE BREADTH OF GOD’S PLAN!

Where Messengers Can Be Found!

If you ever wonder about whether or not God can use you to spread His Good News of salvation in Jesus, you might like to know where Jesus found His first missionary. The encounter where Jesus found His first missionary was before the time He sent out the twelve disciples (Luke 9). It was also before the sending out of the seventy-two (Luke 10). This encounter was also before Jesus gave His disciples the “Great Commission” to go out into all the world. (Matthew 28)

The encounter I am referring to is found in Mark 5:1-20. Jesus had arrived in the region of the Gerasenes, after crossing the lake by boat, and was greeted by a man possessed by many demons. This “wild man” could not be controlled and his home became a place among the tombs (a cemetery). After healing the man (an account I encourage you to read) Jesus and His disciples were getting back into the boat when the man, very appreciative of the healing he had received, pleaded with Jesus to let him go with them.

Mark tells us:
“(19) And he did not permit him but said to him, ‘Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.’ (20) And he went away AND BEGAN TO PROCLAIM in the Decapolis HOW MUCH JESUS HAD DONE FOR HIM, and everyone marveled.” (Mark 5:19-20 ESV)

Did you catch it? Did you notice that Jesus found His first missionary in a cemetery? Can God use you? You bet He can and He wants to if you will let Him. How do you begin? Just go out and start telling people how much Jesus has done for you!

Have a great day OF TESTIMONY TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

My Dog Says I'm All Right!

Yesterday morning seemed a little strange. The day did not begin with the usual sounds and routine. I did not hear my wife coaxing our dog, Princess, to get out of her bed to go outside. I did not hear the thump of her tail on the floor as I walked into the living room. I didn’t have to step over her to go into the kitchen. This past Thursday afternoon we made the difficult decision of having her put to sleep because she was having so much difficulty getting around and would often have spells of shaking. Up until about a year and a half ago she would still bring us her leash, letting us know she wanted to go for a walk. However, as inflammation began settling into her hind quarters she needed help getting up or would drag herself pitifully along. She had been a member of our family for a good number of years and never lost her sweetness. Other than her joy of eating (though she most recently had done that lying down by her bowl) her most energized movement remaining was in her tail. As soon as we would come through the front door or enter the room where she was, we would hear the thumping of her tail on the floor. We were accepted by her with an unconditional love.

I have become a bit painfully aware of how often my eyes would turn to the corner of the room where she often laid. I can picture her ears that would perk up at the sound of the lid coming off the peanut butter. I can see her head pop up at the sound of my spoon hitting the bottom of an almost empty cereal bowl, and though she would be in the living room, her eyes would remain focused toward me, knowing she would most likely get to finish the little bit that was left. We will also miss hearing the “hound” in her (she was a beagle and terrier mix) when the raccoons would come onto our deck to eat cat food.

Thinking about the loss of this good friend made me think of a “teEn-MAIL” focus I had sent out in May of 1998. I share it again to encourage us to consider the way we should be in the eyes of God.

================
[This focus was originally sent 05/30/1998, (Edited some and passage has been changed to ESV)]

MY DOG SAYS I’M ALL RIGHT!

Warren J Keating (minister of a church in Arizona) has stated that the best prayer he ever heard was: “Lord, please make me the kind of person my dog thinks I am.”

Our dog, Princess loves me. As I sit here typing, her wet nose often pushes my arm up so I will pet her. Even if she is not being given direct attention, she likes to at least sit at my feet or in the room near me. Often times as I am sending out the e-mail she is lying on her blanket behind me. She thinks I'm okay. I'm the person she wants to stay around.

Most importantly I need to be that way in the eyes of God for the sake of being the RIGHT KIND OF EXAMPLE for others.

We sing the song:

“Make me a servant, Lord make me like You
For You are a servant, make we one too.
Make me a servant, do what You must do
To make me a servant, make me like You.

To Love my brother, to serve like You do
I humble my spirit, I bow before You.
And through my service, I'll be just like You
So make me a servant, make me like You.

Open my hands, Lord, teach me to share
And open my heart, Lord, teach me to care.
Service to others is service to You
So make me a servant, make me like You.”
(author unknown)

Phillips, Craig & Dean (a contemporary Christian group) have recorded a song “I Want To Be Just Like You” (written by Joy Becker & Dan Dean). It is a song about a father recognizing his son’s desire to be just like him and thus the seriousness of living a life that presents the RIGHT EXAMPLE. The chorus of the song goes like this:

“Lord, I want to be just like You 'Cause he wants to be just like me
I want to be a holy example For his innocent eyes to see
Help me be a living Bible, Lord, That my little boy can read
I want to be just like You 'Cause he wants to be like me.”

This world is so much in need of some GOOD EXAMPLES. May we all follow in the steps of Jesus so the world will have an opportunity to see an EXAMPLE that will hopefully lead them to God.

Paul wrote:
“BE IMITATORS OF ME, AS I AM OF CHRIST.” (I Corinthians 11:1 ESV)

Have a great day LIVING LIKE JESUS!

Careful Of Repackaging!

Today we buy many products such as medications and food items in what is called “TAMPER proof” packaging. Some products even bear the warning that if the protective seal is broken or the packaging is punctured or torn, the product should not be used. The purpose of all this is for the protection of the consumer. The manufacture of these products recognizes the liability of ensuring the providing of a pure product to their customers. The seals and protective packaging are designed to keep anyone from slipping something in to corrupt the product’s quality.

As Paul spoke of his ministry in his second letter to the church at Corinth he affirmed…
“(1) Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. (2) But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. WE REFUSE to practice cunning or TO TAMPER WITH GOD’S WORD, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:1-2 ESV)

The Greek word translated “tamper” in the English Standard Version (also in the Revised Standard Version) is “dolountes”, from “doloo”, which means to distort, adulterate, handle deceitfully, or TAMPER. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words states this word “primarily signifies to ensnare; hence, to corrupt, especially by mingling the truths of the Word of God with false doctrines or notions, and so handling it deceitfully.”

A medicine bottle that has been TAMPERED with can cause an adverse reaction, sickness, or even death. Watered down medicines will not provide the potency needed and that which has been added to can cause serious side affects. All of this can also be true when the message God has provided is TAMPERED with by those who would take away from it or add their own doctrines to it, with the result also being spiritual sickness and even death (separation from God).

Through the ages God’s Word has come with a warning against it being added to, taken away from, going beyond, or being changed in any way. (i.e. Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32; Proverbs 30:5-6; 1 Corinthians 4:6; Revelation 22:18-19) If the message of God is packaged different than how He has revealed it in His Word we should reject it. It will not be good for us. We need to accept His Word and also share it as it is in order for the message to have the effect God intends.

Let us be diligent to do the thing Paul urged Timothy toward.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, RIGHTLY HANDLING THE WORD OF TRUTH.” (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)

As Paul carried out his ministry conscious of doing so “in the sight of God”, so should we live and serve. It is God’s view which counts above all, for we shall ultimately be accountable to Him for how we accept His Word and what we do with it. May we keep it pure.

Have a great day HOLDING TO AND SHARING GOD’S WORD IN ITS PUREST FORM!

Just A Member?

Not all members of society are contributing members. Those who are not end up being supported by the rest of society either financially or through acts of volunteerism. Certainly there are some members of society who are unable to contribute as much as they would like due to either physical, mental, or other limiting disabilities. However, I know even some of them who eagerly contribute what they can. The worst disability keeping some from being contributing members of society is the refusal to accept the personal responsibility of being an active member. Such become a drain on society.

Just as there are both active and inactive members of society, sadly it is also true within the church. Let us remember that the Lord’s church is described as His Body (Colossians 1:18 & 24) of which He is the Head. (Ephesians 5:23) As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, seeking to bring these Christians into greater unity with one another, he presented a marvelous analogy of how the members of the physical body are to work for the MUTUAL BENEFIT of the whole and how that is to be the same expectation within the Body of Christ, the church. (read 1 Corinthians 12:14-27)

To consider the physical body, what would be the impact if the arms and hands desired to be considered members of the body while only hanging limp, doing nothing? The body might be able to move about, but be unable to accomplish very much. Or suppose the legs decided they wanted to be considered members of the body, but not in an active sense. Such would mean the body would have to crawl or drag itself along causing activity and work to be greatly impeded. What if the mouth decided it wanted to be considered a member of the body, but no longer wanted to eat? We know the body would begin dying due to lack of nourishment.

We could go on with the analogy, but to consider such an attitude with regard to being a member of the Body of Christ, can we see the implications? The body (whether we are referring to the physical body or the Body of Christ) is healthiest when each member is actively doing its part for the MUTUAL BENEFIT of the whole. To refuse to do that is to discourage and impair progress, even draining strength from other members.

Writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul exhorted…
“(15) Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, (16) from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, WHEN EACH PART IS WORKING PROPERLY, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16 ESV)

Just a member? How can one truly consider themselves a member if there is no activity? To have heard the Gospel of Jesus and responded to it in belief (Romans 10:17; Mark 16:15-16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4), repenting of sins (Acts 17:30-31), being willing to confess Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9-10) and submit to baptism for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; 8:36) and being united in Christ (Colossians 2:12; Galatians 3:27) is all good, right, and necessary. However, that is just the beginning of our life response to the privileges of salvation made possible in Christ. Our active walk in this new life in Christ (Romans 6:4) and our work to His glory and our fellowship with one another (note 1 John 1:7) continues.

As a member of the Body of Christ we each have a responsibility with regard to aiding the spiritual health of the Body. Doing otherwise is to be a sick member in need of restoration. Refusing to contribute individual abilities, encouragement, energy, money, presence, time, etc. is to take away from the health and strength and work that could (should) be taking place. If we truly have a connection with the Head of the Body (Jesus Christ) that logically implies a connection with the other members of the Body. May we give serious consideration to the MUTUAL BENEFIT we are responsible to contribute. Such action will strengthen the church and glorify the Lord Who purchased us for Himself by His blood.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE BLESSING OF TRULY BELONGING!

Creator Of The Calm!

After Jesus had spent some time teaching in parables, He and the disciples got into a boat, leaving the crowd behind. While they were crossing the sea a great windstorm arose causing the waves to begin breaking over the side of the boat. Remember, four of the disciples had been fisherman and were very familiar with the dangers that could arise on the sea. As the storm grew, so did their concern. But what was Jesus doing as the boat began to fill with water? He was PEACEFULLY sleeping in the stern of the boat. (Mark 4:36)

After Jesus was awakened by the disciples we read…
“(39) And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘PEACE! BE STILL!’ And the wind ceased, and THERE WAS A GREAT CALM. (40) He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ (41) And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?’” (Mark 4:39-41 ESV)

Someone has said, “Peace rules the day when Christ rules the mind.” [source: “sentence sermons”] I think the statement could also be made that PEACE rules the day when Christ rules the heart or the life. Without His rule in our life, how can we possibly think we can have PEACE. The disciples were still beginning to come to grips with all the Lord was truly the Lord of. He would later encourage them that even though they would have trials in this world, in Him they would have PEACE. (John 16:33) Just as Jesus had the power to calm the storm, He also had the power to overcome the world and bring PEACE beyond anything this world could offer. (John 14:27)

Like the disciples, we need to remember who entered the “boat” of life with us so that we could develop faith in His ability to see us through the storms. In our relationship with Him we can find PEACE of mind that no storm is a match for His overcoming power. Rather than telling our Lord how big the storm is, let us tell the storm how great our Lord truly is. Then we can find the PEACE Jesus desires for us to experience.

Have a great day LETTING CHRIST RULE ON!

Taking A Chance?

Ever heard of the 50/50/90 rule? It expresses the idea that anytime one has a 50/50 chance of getting something right, there is a 90 percent probability they will get it wrong. That does not speak very well of leaving things to chance, especially with regard to spiritual matters. There is no purpose in chance. There is no planning in chance. Where can there be any hope with chance? Life must be approached on a more serious level.

An athlete doesn’t just leave the success of competition to chance, but goes into “strict training” (1 Corinthians 9:25 NIV) so as to be able to win the prize. The hopes of a career coming along by chance could destine one to standing in the unemployment line or settling for a less fulfilling occupation. In the same way, spiritual growth does not just happen all by itself. Maintaining a proper focus and direction in this world is often like the struggle to swim upstream. Without DILIGENT EFFORT we will find ourselves merely going with the flow.

After Peter urged the adding of virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love to faith, he went on to exhort…
“(8) For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. (10) Therefore, brothers, BE ALL THE MORE DILIGENT TO MAKE YOUR CALLING AND ELECTION SURE, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” (2 Peter 1:8-10 ESV)

Life left to chance will leave plenty of room for stumbling and falling. If life is approached without a plan that aims toward a specific goal, who knows what roads one may end up traveling! Life left to chance leaves no assurance regarding the final destination. To live life based on chance is the worst kind of gamble to make because the stakes are high (the soul’s eternal destination) and the odds are against it. (note Matthew 7:13-14)

It is true that we do not merit our salvation, but are cleansed by the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7) and saved by the grace of God. (Ephesians 2:8-10) However, we must still purposely pursue a life of godliness, being “DILIGENT to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.” (2 Peter 3:14) As has been rightly stated: “To fail to plan is to plan to fail.” May our life be marked by DILIGENT effort in seeking the things of God and to please Him. In our continuing relationship with Him through Christ the odds are established in our favor.

Have a great day ASSURED OF THE BLESSINGS IN CHRIST!

Well, What Do You Know?

The more I study the Scriptures the more I come to know and the clearer I see things I have known before. However, as I study I also realize there is still much I do not know. Therefore I continue in the pursuit of the knowledge of the Scriptures so that I may learn what I can and be guided by it.

Donald Rumsfeld (the present Secretary of Defense for our United States) made the following statement. “Reports that say something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”

Do you know what he was saying? Though it may sound confusing I think he has it right because I understand the experience in relation to the pursuit of knowledge. When I first heard his statement, the following passage came to mind.

“The SECRET THINGS BELONG TO THE LORD OUR GOD, but THE THINGS THAT ARE REVEALED BELONG TO US and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV)

God has not REVEALED everything to us. Nevertheless, what He has should encourage us. The truths God has chosen to REVEAL we ought to HOLD ONTO. When it comes to the “unknowns” there is nothing wrong with saying, “I don’t know” rather than being like those who go on and on talking about things they really don’t understand or of which they are actually ignorant. (i.e. 2 Peter 2:12; Jude 10) God may have chosen not to REVEAL some things because He knows we couldn’t comprehend them anyway. Remember that His Ways and Thoughts are much higher than ours. (Isaiah 55:9)

Paul referred to one [though it seems to have been himself (2 Corinthians 12:7)] who was caught up into paradise and heard “inexpressible words” [NKJV] that could not be told. (2 Corinthians 12:3-4) Perhaps what was heard or witnessed could not have been expressed or understood in human terms because it was too heavenly or spiritual to be grasped.

Yes, there are things we know and things we don’t know. There are also things we know we don’t know and probably much more we don’t know we don’t know. Let us continue to embrace what we do know, knowing the One Who has REVEALED it, and as we seek to grow in greater knowledge of His Will, let us trust God Who knows the unknowns that are not yet ours to possess.

Have a great day TRUSTING THE ONE WHO IS COMPLETELY IN THE KNOW!

Journey Of The Heart!

Some people, as they journey toward a destination, may drag their feet because they really don’t want to go. Then there are destinations to which one might run with eagerness because they just can’t get there quick enough. What is the spirit with which we approach our life journey?

Note the following statement from Psalms.
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, IN WHOSE HEART ARE THE HIGHWAYS TO ZION.” (Psalm 84:5 ESV)

The New King James Version reads, “…Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.”

Are we dragging our feet with regard to the direction God desires for our life or are we drawn along with a sense of eagerness? Do we ever feel like stopping and remaining just where we are? To what degree is our HEART SET on the journey toward God and the future He has prepared for us?

I’m reminded of the Hebrew writer’s comment regarding the focus of the heroes of faith as they followed the direction of God in their journey through this life.
“(13) These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were STRANGERS AND EXILES ON THE EARTH. (14) For people who speak thus make it clear that they are SEEKING A HOMELAND. (15) If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. (16) But as it is, they DESIRE A BETTER COUNTRY, that is, A HEAVENLY ONE. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their GOD, for HE HAS PREPARED FOR THEM A CITY.” (Hebrews 11:13-16 ESV)

The journey toward God and the future He has planned for the redeemed begins with a HEART THAT TURNS from self will to His Will. This turning aids us in remaining receptive to His “HIGH WAYS” (Isaiah 55:9) rather than being drawn into the world’s “low ways.” Then with a WILLING HEART we are to walk in the path He lays before us. Continuing life’s journey with a HEART OF TRUST that where God leads is always the best route to get us to our journey’s rightful end, let us always bear in mind the truth that we will most be drawn to where our HEART IS FOCUSED. (i.e. Matthew 6:21) May we press on with an EAGER and SINCERE HEART for the journey God has set before us.

Have a great day TRAVELING THE HIGH WAYS OF GOD!

Time Needed!

There is a tendency, as some go about the day-to-day activities of life, to forget about God and even forget about what is best for themselves. When God revealed His law for the nation of Israel, He established that which would provide blessing and the best life for His people. God’s regulations were intended to help maintain a proper relationship between Him and the nation, as well as the people with each other.

Among the commands given we read…
“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.” (Exodus 34:21 ESV)

Sabbath means “rest” and under the Old Law the designated day of rest was the seventh day, correlating with the day following God’s completed work of creation. (Exodus 20:11) Though mankind often neglects it for various reasons, there is a need for REST TIME and FOCUS TIME. Under the law it was clearly stated it did not matter what else was going on; even during the busy time of plowing or the busy time of harvest the Sabbath was to be kept! It did not matter how pressing the work of the season might have been, the Sabbath was to be taken! It was established for man’s benefit (Mark 2:27); providing REST TIME for family, servants, and even the livestock (Exodus 20:10) and thus to protect all from being overworked. It was also to be recognized as being “a solemn rest, holy to the Lord” (Exodus 35:2); FOCUS TIME on Him with a trust for His continuing provision.

We are not under the same Sabbath law today. (Colossians 2:16-17; Romans 10:4; Hebrews 7:12) However, there is still the need for not allowing the activities of life to consume us to the point specific time for God is crowded out and we fail to take time out to REST AND REFOCUS. The Israelites were not to say, “But I’ve got to get the ground plowed up.” or “I’ve got to get the seed planted.” or “Everything is ripe and I’ve got to get the harvest in.” Rather, they were to obey God’s command and observe the Sabbath while trusting His provision from the labors of the other six days. Why should it be any different with us? With all the modern conveniences and rapid speed at which we can get much accomplished today, why do so many have trouble setting aside the time for God, for fellowship and worship, and for one another? What is so “urgent” that some better planning on our part could not remedy? Every person receives the same number of minutes and hours for each day. God knows how our time is spent and what our choices are based upon. He also knows how we make time for that which we most desire to do!

The Hebrew writer admonished…
“(24) And let us consider how to STIR UP ONE ANOTHER TO LOVE AND GOOD WORKS, (25) NOT NEGLECTING TO MEET TOGETHER, as is the habit of some, but ENCOURAGING ONE ANOTHER, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV)

The benefit of withdrawing from the busyness of life is for self, for family, for our brethren, and to keep a focus properly set on God. The first day of the week -- correlating with our Lord’s resurrection (John 20:1) and the beginning of His church (Acts 2) -- should hold special significance to us. If we don’t plan, but rather only give God whatever time (if any) is left over, we display little appreciation for all the ways in which He has brought blessing into our life. Let us not neglect the opportunity provided for REST TIME and FOCUS TIME. It will glorify God, encourage others, and bring refreshment to ourselves in many ways.

Have a great day FINDING GOD’S BLESSINGS IN SETTING ASIDE THE TIME!

Impatience!

We probably all struggle with being impatient from time to time. We get impatient with each other or with having to wait for certain things to happen. However, do we ever get impatient with God?

As God set out to lead Israel from Egyptian slavery and on toward a glorious destination, He did not lead them by a direct route because He knew if the people faced war too quickly they would become discouraged and want to return. (Exodus 13:17) Still, it did not take the Israelites long to begin complaining and wishing they were back in Egypt. (i.e. Exodus 14:12; 16:2-3; 17:3; etc.) This was in spite of the fact they recognized the plagues in Egypt to be a demonstration of God’s power, celebrated God’s glorious deliverance on dry land through the sea while He brought the waters back on the Egyptians, and wondered at the plentiful provision of water to drink where there was none plus the manna and quail to eat.

At a place where God provided water from a rock we read…
“And he [Moses] called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, ‘IS THE LORD AMONG US OR NOT?’” (Exodus 17:7 ESV)

Besides being stiff-necked (i.e. Exodus 32:9) [stubborn and rebellious], the Israelites were also a very impatient people! Perhaps they wondered “IS THE LORD AMONG US?” because they were not getting what they “thought” they needed or wanted. Since provision was not made immediately they thought God was no longer in the picture. Have we ever struggled there? Because God’s hand is not seen or because some don’t get what they have prayed for, they begin to deny or question the existence of God.

For Israel, this was to be a time for learning to trust God. Do we recognize how impatience can actually be a sign of the lack of trust in either God’s power or His wisdom?

While Paul was in Athens, he declared to the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers…
“(26) And he [God] made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, (27) that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet HE IS ACTUALLY NOT FAR FROM EACH ONE OF US,” (Acts 17:26-27 ESV)

Certainly there is much going on in this world that is contrary to the Will of God. Nonetheless, imagine how much worse it would be were God to not exist! Because we believe we pray and as we pray we must trust God to work things out in His time and in accordance with His wisdom. He is very much aware of our life situations. He is not absent from life. HE HAS NOT WITHDRAWN HIMSELF FROM US.

Through the psalmist we have God’s urging to…
“BE STILL, AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD. I WILL be exalted among the nations, I WILL be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10 ESV)

And Isaiah encouraged…
“but THEY WHO WAIT ON THE LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 ESV)

James also exhorted Christians going through extremely difficult times to…
“(7) BE PATIENT, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. SEE HOW THE FARMER WAITS for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. (8) YOU ALSO, BE PATIENT. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:7-8 ESV)

God has a timetable for bringing all His plans to fruition and those plans will not be thwarted by mankind. We don’t know when, but the Lord will come again (Matthew 24:36) and His coming will be in accordance with God’s timing rather than our own desire. Therefore, let us continue to exercise the patience and trust to which we have been called. We may not always see the hand of God at work, but His work continues (John 5:17) and we can believe that HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING!

Have a great day REVEALING HOW WORTHY GOD IS OF OUR TRUST!

A Vital Organ

When all the vital organs of the body work properly our activity is not restricted and life can be lived to the fullest. However, when the heart and lungs begin to function improperly we can either become sick, very limited in activity, or even die. Therefore it is important to observe good health practices for life longevity.

This is also true with regard to our spiritual well-being. If the HEART is not kept in proper condition we can become sick, our activity to the glory of God will begin to diminish, and ultimately we can be found dead in our sins. (Ephesians 2:1-5) Just like the serious consequences we would face if our physical HEART gave out, even more so is the seriousness if we LOSE HEART spiritually. It is possible, with some of the things we face in life, to be easily tempted to LOSE HEART and give up! Therefore we must guard our lives closely so that we do not LOSE HEART function that can spiritually sustain us.

After referring to Jesus having endured the cross for us, the Hebrew writer exhorted…
“(3) Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may NOT GROW WEARY OR FAINTHEARTED. (4) In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” (Hebrews 12:3-4 ESV)

Have we experienced the pangs of a FAINT HEART? Remember not just what our Lord endured on our behalf, but how others have stood strong in the face of opposition. As they stand as heroes of faith to us, let us strive to remain strong as a hero of faith for others.

Though there are physical ways in which our strength may diminish as we grow older, that does not have to be the picture of our life in a spiritual sense. Note the encouragement of Paul’s view of life.

“(16) So we DO NOT LOSE HEART. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our INNER NATURE IS BEING RENEWED DAY BY DAY. (17) For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, (18) as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ESV)

The spiritual renewal of our life is ongoing. It is a day by day thing that God provides while we continue to embrace the truth of His Word and walk on in the full assurance of faith. When Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow, Luke noted the purpose of that parable was to encourage us “ALWAYS TO PRAY AND NOT LOSE HEART.” (Luke 18:1 ESV) May the power of God’s promises and the abiding truth of His Will continue coursing our veins to bring vitality to sustain our spiritual walk.

Have a great day MARKED BY UN-AGING SPIRITUAL AGILITY!

Knowing The Struggle!

Of all the Apostles, Peter is one of my favorites. [Please notice I said “one of”. I also have a great fondness for especially Andrew (Peter’s brother) who quietly connected with others (John 1:40-42; 6:8-9; 12:20-22), the spark of conviction of James and John (Luke 9:53-54) whom Jesus gave the name “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17), and Thomas who should not be remembered for his doubting, but more for his willingness to put his life on the line with Jesus. (note John 11:16)] Glimpsing Peter’s life through the Gospels and into the book of Acts we know he had his struggles. However, Peter was driven by a marvelous spirit and a powerful love for the Lord.

With Jesus having come to establish His Kingdom, Peter just could not imagine His Lord being put to death. He even took Jesus aside and told Him it wasn’t going to happen. (Matthew 16:22) Peter was also driven by a great desire to stand by His Lord all the way, stating his willingness to defend Him to the death. (Matthew 26:33-35; John 13:37) And Peter did draw a sword. (John 18:10) However, as Jesus had predicted, he did later deny the Lord three times.

Prior to Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, Peter, James and John accompanied Jesus as He went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. After Jesus went away the first of the three times He prayed, He came and found the disciples sleeping rather than watching.

To Peter Jesus said…
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. THE SPIRIT INDEED IS WILLING, BUT THE FLESH IS WEAK.” (Matthew 26:41 ESV)

Jesus knew Peter and the struggle he would face. Peter was WELL INTENTIONED. He was SINCERE IN HIS DESIRE to stand unwaveringly behind Jesus. He had a very WILLING SPIRIT, but the flesh was not quite so strong. Do we know the struggle? Have we not also at times found our SPIRIT WAS WILLING, but we caved in when the going got tough, revealing we were not quite as strong as we thought we were? To know the struggle should serve to keep us humble (not having too high an estimation of our own abilities) and to encourage the placing of our reliance on God’s strength and wisdom.

The Apostle Peter did continue to grow and God used him in powerful ways. Peter developed a boldness in ministry that was unstoppable. (i.e. Acts 4:19-20; 5:42) He just had to learn to look beyond himself and so must we. May we therefore maintain a SPIRIT OF WILLINGNESS to serve the Lord’s purposes while we look to Him for the strength to sustain our faith and actions regardless of what we might face.

Have a great day KNOWING WE DON’T STAND ALONE!
