The Greatest Of These!

Paul declared…
“So now FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE abide, these three; BUT THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE.” ( 1 Corinthians 13:13)

Faith! Jesus complimented and encouraged great faith. The Hebrew writer stated that without it we cannot please God. ( Hebrews 11:6) However, Paul declared an individual could have great faith, but if it was not accompanied by LOVE, they would be nothing! ( 1 Corinthians 13:2)

Hope! Assurance of hope is necessary to help us through tough times. We need encouragement that our pressing on is worth the effort. Without hope we would be left with despair.

Though faith, hope, and LOVE abide, Paul elevated LOVE to a greater height than the other two. That doesn’t negate their value, but directs us to consider what there is about LOVE that gives it its special status. Where would we be without the LOVE of God? ( Romans 5:8) Without LOVE in our life, where would be the basis and the power for Christian living? LOVE (according to the first three verses of 1 Corinthians 13) is an essential quality to possess!

There is nothing else like “agape” (selfless, God-like) LOVE. This LOVE can create a bond greater than anything else. LOVE for God provides a steadfast resolve to cling to Him and His Will. LOVE seeks the best for others. LOVE is a powerful motivator in the face of all odds, empowering endurance through much. LOVE emboldens to even place oneself in danger for the sake of loved ones.

Though we should cling to our faith and hope, we would do well to also consider the enduring essence of LOVE above the other two. A time will come when there will no longer be a need for faith because we shall fully know as we are fully known. ( 1 Corinthians 13:12) A time will also come when there will no longer be a need for hope because it will be attained. (note Romans 8:24) On the other hand LOVE will always exist to be experienced. LOVE is just as eternal as God Himself Who is LOVE. ( 1 John 4:8) As we consider the Greatest LOVER who first LOVED us ( 1 John 4:19), may we allow that Divine essence to grow in us, becoming the foundation on which our actions and speech are based.

Have a great day EMPOWERED BY A NEVER ENDING LOVE!
Carl
