Are You Sure?
We know from Scripture that Satan can take on any form ( 2 Corinthians 11:14; I Peter 5:8) and work by various means. If Satan really appeared as a figure dressed in a red suit and holding a pitch-fork we might not be so easily deceived. But he is sly. The form he took in the garden of Eden was that of a serpent and, in order to deceive Eve, he used some clever tactical maneuvers.
The first of these was through his clever use of words. We know Satan tried to use this method in quoting Scripture to Jesus ( Matthew 4) and Jesus Himself referred to Satan as a liar, even pointing this out to be his native language. ( John 8:44) But note the method of wording he used in the garden with Eve:
“… Did God ACTUALLY SAY, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” ( Genesis 3:1 ESV)
Satan has a tricky way of putting us on the defensive. He has a way of putting question marks in our mind. The tactic is to get us to rethink what God has told us and begin to re-evaluate whether what we thought God said is REALLY what He meant.
-- Did we truly understand properly?
-- Maybe the idea wasn’t really anything of consequence after all.
-- Since so many others are not doing that, does it really make a difference?
-- Will there really be any harm in it?
-- Couldn’t I go only so far without really crossing the line?
-- Aren’t I strong enough to do it once and then leave it alone?
The thoughts come to mind. The world tugs at our attention. However the questions come. Satan is pleased when we begin to question because when we become confused it is easier to be led astray.
When it comes to God’s promises, as well as His warnings, He REALLY means what He has said. May we keep listening to His message. Then let us live in a manner that reveals to the world we have accepted what God has said.
Have a great day KEEPING HEART AND EAR OPEN TO GOD!
Carl
(PS. Tomorrow, Lord willing, we will focus on a second maneuver of Satan with Eve.)
