What's Within?
Sometimes life seems to move along at rocket speed and other times it may seem to drag on -- all perhaps depending on what is going on at the time. We think about the past and we try to glimpse the future, but the thing of importance and within our grasp is what is going on right now. Where is our focus? What are our present actions being based upon?
Someone has stated, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared with what lies in us.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
Certainly the past and the future matter to us, but the good news is the past does not have to define us. Praise God it can be left behind. Hopefully we are able to look at the past and see we have done some growing. Regarding the future, it is not yet ours. However, it is the things going on with us today that will impact our preparedness for whatever the future may bring. Therefore let us give serious consideration to what is going on within ourselves presently.
Jesus charged some of the leaders of that day with appearing righteous on the outside, but within being full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. (Matthew 23:28) He also listed things within that can make one impure. (Mark 7:20-23) In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus he referred to the “sons of disobedience” who had the spirit of the “prince of the power of the air” still at work within them. (Ephesians 2:2)
What is going on within ourselves? What spirit is at work in our life? The past may be what it is because of self and self alone offers no assurance for the future. What is it that compels and EMPOWERS us to do what we are doing right now?
Note Paul’s prayer for the church at Ephesus.
“(14) For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, (15) from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, (16) that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you TO BE STRENGTHENED WITH POWER THROUGH HIS SPIRIT IN YOUR INNER BEING, (17) so THAT CHRIST MAY DWELL IN YOUR HEARTS THROUGH FAITH -- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, (19) and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you MAY BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD. (20) Now TO HIM WHO IS ABLE to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, ACCORDING TO THE POWER AT WORK WITHIN US, (21) to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:14-21 ESV)
God has provided His Spirit to strengthen our “inner being” and Christ is to live within us by faith. The goal of our maturing in Christ is that of being “filled with all the fullness of God.” And we can rely upon His power working within us to bring about even that which is beyond our imagination. There is no need for concern as long as we allow HIS POWER to keep working within us and His truth and love to fill our life in a way that motivates us in continuing service to His glory and praise.
Have a great day FILLED FOR TRUE LIFE!

Just Take A Look!
Yesterday we focused on the clever tactical maneuver of Satan getting us to question or rethink what God has said. Today we will consider another.
A second tactical maneuver Satan used with Eve was to get her to FOCUS ON THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT. Here was the attempt to appeal to her senses. Note Eve’s focus:
“So when the woman saw that the tree was GOOD FOR FOOD, and that it was A DELIGHT TO THE EYES, and that the tree was to be DESIRED TO MAKE ONE WISE, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.” (Genesis 3:6 ESV)
If sin looked bad who would want it? People get caught up in sin because it appeals to the senses in some way. Often the first mistake is to keep looking. Eve looked. She noticed it was appealing to the appetite. She also noticed it looked good. She was drawn as well by what appeared to be a great benefit; the gaining of wisdom.
Did you note that nowhere in the text did Satan ever tell her to go ahead and eat it? He knows if he can just get us to focus on some things long enough, the desires will get us to move the rest of the way. And that is exactly the light in which James placed temptation.
We read…
“(13) Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. (14) But each person is tempted when he is LURED AND ENTICED BY his OWN DESIRE. (15) Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:13-15 ESV)
BE CAREFUL WHAT THE FOCUS BECOMES FIXED ON. If there are some situations, places, anything that takes the focus away from what God desires, don’t go there or look there. Don’t test your strength. Don’t play with fire. Don’t chance getting burned. Don’t create the opportunity to be led astray. Keep the FOCUS ON GOD and HIS WAY in order to be continually drawn closer to Him.
Have a great day FOCUSED ON THE TRULY GOOD!

Are You Sure?
We know from Scripture that Satan can take on any form (2 Corinthians 11:14; I Peter 5:8) and work by various means. If Satan really appeared as a figure dressed in a red suit and holding a pitch-fork we might not be so easily deceived. But he is sly. The form he took in the garden of Eden was that of a serpent and, in order to deceive Eve, he used some clever tactical maneuvers.
The first of these was through his clever use of words. We know Satan tried to use this method in quoting Scripture to Jesus (Matthew 4) and Jesus Himself referred to Satan as a liar, even pointing this out to be his native language. (John 8:44) But note the method of wording he used in the garden with Eve:
“… Did God ACTUALLY SAY, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1 ESV)
Satan has a tricky way of putting us on the defensive. He has a way of putting question marks in our mind. The tactic is to get us to rethink what God has told us and begin to re-evaluate whether what we thought God said is REALLY what He meant.
-- Did we truly understand properly?
-- Maybe the idea wasn’t really anything of consequence after all.
-- Since so many others are not doing that, does it really make a difference?
-- Will there really be any harm in it?
-- Couldn’t I go only so far without really crossing the line?
-- Aren’t I strong enough to do it once and then leave it alone?
The thoughts come to mind. The world tugs at our attention. However the questions come. Satan is pleased when we begin to question because when we become confused it is easier to be led astray.
When it comes to God’s promises, as well as His warnings, He REALLY means what He has said. May we keep listening to His message. Then let us live in a manner that reveals to the world we have accepted what God has said.
Have a great day KEEPING HEART AND EAR OPEN TO GOD!

(PS. Tomorrow, Lord willing, we will focus on a second maneuver of Satan with Eve.)

Signs Of Believing!
For some, “seeing” is believing. These individuals require some kind of visible proof before they will believe. Jesus came face to face with those who demanded signs (Matthew 12:38 and 16:1) and Paul referred to such as well. (1 Corinthians 1:22)
Then there are those who have learned that “believing” is seeing. Perhaps that most parallels the Hebrew writer’s definition of faith (Hebrews 11:1), a faith convicted by even the unseen.
Consider a third concept. There are some who may think that “saying” is believing. To verbalize something must mean the one speaking believes it. Right? Not necessarily! Some people speak things knowing what they are saying is not true. Then there are also those who may speak the truth, but still not acknowledge it as such. We have an example of this in the account of an attempt to entrap Jesus with a question regarding the paying of taxes to Caesar.
Note the initial statements of these whom Jesus would call “hypocrites.” (Matthew 22:18)
“(15) Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his talk. (16) And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE TRUE and TEACH THE WAY OF GOD TRUTHFULLY, and YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE’S OPINION, for YOU ARE NOT SWAYED BY APPEARANCES.” (Matthew 22:15-16 ESV)
These insincere questioners -- in words of flattery before setting their trap with a question that would either diminish Jesus’ popularity among the people or get Him into trouble with the Roman officials -- stated four things about Jesus that were very true. What they said with regard to His character was right! It was unfortunate they did not believe their own words.
First of all, they noted Jesus as being true. How could He be anything but, since He Himself is the Truth. (John 14:6)
Secondly, they noted Jesus as one who taught the truth of God. Of course He did, after all, Jesus came as “the Word” in the “flesh”, being “full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-2, 14)
Thirdly, they noted Jesus as one who was not swayed by the opinions of others. He stuck to His convictions. He loved the Father and came to do exactly what the Father had commanded Him to do. (John 14:31) Since Jesus’ work was not to please man, but rather to save him (which should be the most pleasing thing to us), His actions were always in complete harmony with the Will of the Father. (John 5:19)
And finally, they noted Jesus as one who did not judge by appearances. He knew what was within a man (John 2:25). Jesus could see into the heart and He knew full well what these questioners were up to. Also, when we look at the ministry of Jesus we see how He came into contact with individuals from every level of society of that day. With Him there was no bias, partiality, or prejudice.
All this clearly reveals one can easily speak truths they do not accept or believe! What is it that may be seen as a true sign of believing? True belief impacts the ACTIONS of the life, as can be noted from the example of Abraham and how he was viewed by God. (Hebrews 11:8-10, 17-19; James 2:14, 19-23) To truly believe is to PUT INTO PRACTICE the principles of God’s Word and seek to please Him above all else. May such belief be clearly evident in our day-to-day living.
Have a great day LIVING THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER!

Acceptable Heart Condition!
When it comes to heart condition some may simply be in need of more exercise and better diet while others could require consultation with a physician and heart surgeon. To deal with heart difficulties the procedures range from angioplasty to radical heart surgery or the installation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. When it comes to spiritual heart condition, it is God to Whom we must turn for healing.
The statement has been made that “God demands a whole heart, but He accepts a broken one.” [source: list of sentence sermons] Note how the following two passages relate to this concept.
David wrote…
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEART, O GOD, YOU WILL NOT DESPISE.” (Psalm 51:17 ESV)
Remember Jesus’ response when asked about the greatest commandment.
“And he said to him, ‘You shall LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART and with all your soul and with all your mind.’” (Matthew 22:37 ESV)
There is a sense in which it takes a BROKEN (pierced, struck, touched, humbled) AND CONTRITE (penitent) HEART to draw us to God. The BROKEN HEART is one that has come to understand and therefore humbly and willingly turns to the One Who can bring the healing. Such is the converse of those who refuse to see their need. (Isaiah 6:10 and Matthew 13:15) The hardhearted either deny His existence or their need for a relationship with Him. But as we come to God with a HEART BROKEN, humbly acknowledging we have not been right with God, He is able to bring the needed healing so that our spiritual health can be restored. Then as we recognize the great, gracious and merciful love God has for us, our love for Him and our obedience to Him can begin growing into WHOLEHEARTED faithfulness. (note Romans 6:17) Learning to deny the desires of self, we are then in a position to turn our attention to loving God with our WHOLE HEART or entire being; heart, soul, and mind. That is the spiritually healthy heart that will aid in maintaining a healthy relationship with God and His Will; a heart prepared for the longevity of an eternity with Him.
Have a great day WITH A HEALTHFUL HEART FOR GOD!

Horse Sense?
Following the arrest of Peter and John, their being brought before the Jewish council, and then their release after being told to speak or teach no more in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:18), they reported to their friends what had happened. (Acts 4:23) Hearing the report, they prayed together to God, and in that prayer they quoted some words from David.
We read…
“(25)…WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES PLOT IN VAIN? (26) The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’” (Acts 4:25a-26 ESV) [quoting Psalm 2:1-2]
The Greek word “rage” used by Luke in the record of Acts is “phruasso” which primarily referred to the snorting, NEIGHING, or tromping of a horse. How often is that literally what the unbelieving world does in response to the commands of God? There are so many NAY-SAYERS who refuse to accept the proofs regarding Who Jesus is and the vital link He is to God and our salvation. There are the NAY-SAYERS who continually say no to the absolutes of God’s moral standard. There are the NAY-SAYERS who wish to squelch the mention of the Name of God in public life. They won’t believe, will not accept, and often refuse to even listen as they “tromp” off to do their own thing.
Like the Apostles Peter and John, let our resolve be that we too “cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20) regardless of the NAYS of the world. Living as Christians we have seen the wholesomeness Jesus’ teachings have brought to life. And the message of salvation we have read and heard is not to be squelched. The plotting against God’s plans and purposes will ultimately be in vain because His truth will continue to march on regardless of how many NAY-SAYERS there may be.
Perhaps horses have more sense than the NAY-SAYERS, however, it seems every age will have them! Jesus was surround by NAY-SAYERS. The Apostles were also opposed by them. Why should we think we will not face them as well? May the bold affirmation of our life be a resounding YEA because the world needs to come to know that all the promises of God find their YES in Christ. (2 Corinthians 1:20) When it comes to salvation in Christ, the YEAS have it!
Have a great day CONTINUALLY AFFIRMING YOUR YES TO CHRIST!

Measuring By Right Standard!
“Status Quo“ refers to “the existing state of affairs.” [source: Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition, © 1993) As we look around ourselves at the “state of affairs” of this life, what do we see? Is our goal to maintain the “status quo” or to elevate it? Do we ever sense ourselves becoming complacent with how things are either around us or with our own life?
To approach life merely attempting to maintain (or live up to) the “status quo” is to seek to keep things as they are. It suggests no desire for growth. It demands no consciousness regarding any need for improvement. It indicates life is seen as moving along just fine and “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The truth is there is much that needs fixing. Even with regard to our own selves there is room for improvement. To simply seek to maintain the “status quo” is to aim too low.
Jesus stated…
“(46) For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet only your brothers, WHAT MORE ARE YOU DOING THAN OTHERS? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?” (Matthew 5:46-47 ESV)
Loving those who love us may seem to be an equitable standard, but Jesus stated that even the tax collectors did that. What Jesus exhorted toward was learning to love even our enemies and praying for those who would persecute us. (Matthew 5:44) To greet only those with whom was felt a sense of brotherhood was something even done by Gentiles, but Jesus asked His listeners, “WHAT MORE ARE YOU DOING THAN OTHERS?” Jesus’ question implied there was a higher standard by which a life was to be measured.
To simply be content with doing what others are doing -- maintaining the “status quo” -- is not the way life is to be lived. As children of God the standard we live by must be recognized as being higher than that of society in general. Our standard for living is not to simply look at those around us and determine we are doing just fine because we are on a par with them. To seek out the minimum requirements and to be content with that does not reflect much appreciation for the life and hope God has provided. WHAT MORE are we doing? We ought to consider this, not because doing more will merit salvation (we are saved by grace), but because it will reveal God’s intent for what life is really to be all about!
Jesus went on to state the standard for which we are to aim.
“(48) You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48 ESV)
This goal is certainly a lofty one, but it is to be our lifelong pursuit. If there is a “status quo” to be upheld, let it be the “state of affairs” of our heavenly Father who called us to be holy, because He is holy. (1 Peter 1:15-16) May we continually seek for His essence to be evident in our daily life.
Have a great day EXCELLING IN GODLINESS!

Hang In There!
Have you ever gone somewhere and soon found yourself asking why you had come? Perhaps you went with certain expectations, but things did not begin turning out as anticipated. THE GOING may have been with a noble purpose in mind, but the initial results were discouraging. Did you leave? Did you at least consider it? Or did you remain to ultimately realize (even if it was days or years later) that YOUR GOING had accomplished something?
Israel was enslaved in Egypt and Moses was sent as God’s deliverer. Though it was with reluctance that he accepted God’s calling (note his excuses, Exodus 4:1, 10, &13), Moses DID GO with God’s assurance of how His power would be demonstrated to the people to convince them he had been sent by God. (Exodus 4:2-9) However, when Pharaoh first refused to let the people go and made the work harder on them, the people got mad at Moses for having come and made their situation worse. (Exodus 5:21)
Note Moses’ reaction.
“(22) Then Moses turned to the Lord and said, ‘O LORD, why have you done evil to this people? WHY DID YOU EVER SEND ME? (23) For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.’” (Exodus 5:22-23 ESV)
Would you say that Moses was discouraged? The situation did not look good. Things were not working out in the way Moses had anticipated. His discouragement was also revealed in his words, “…the people of Israel have not listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me…?” (Exodus 6:12 ESV)
God continued to encourage Moses who stuck with the charge he and his brother Aaron had been given. As Moses confronted Pharaoh the anticipated results were still not immediate, but after the tenth plague the Israelites were eagerly allowed to go.
When we are involved in seeking to serve the Lord’s purposes, some of the reactions of those around us may easily discourage us. We may wonder many times how much benefit our actions or presence can actually have. Nevertheless, AS WE GO through life there will be many ways in which we can impact the lives of others. I remember a trip we made out of town that initially seemed as if it were for nothing because the service that night was canceled for weather related reasons. However, about a year later we found out that a couple we had spoken to that night as we waited eventually became Christians. They had enjoyed our visit and returned on another occasion and were drawn into the fellowship there. This couple has reminded my wife and I of that first encounter several times since. I also recently received a card from an individual in our community thanking me for support I had provided a couple years ago.
In many situations we may never know the full impact of our HAVING GONE. The important thing is to hang in there, allowing God to use us in whatever ways He can, knowing that service done for His glory and praise will produce some profitable results along the way.
Have a great day WILLING TO SERVE AS WE JOURNEY ON!

While The Games Are Played!
Let me preface today’s focus with the fact I in no way mean to put down those who love football. Some of my close brethren and friends are avid football fans. I also do not intend to imply that these individuals have lost their perspective on life. However, such can become a very real possibility.
Football fans in our area have been hyped about Sunday’s football game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers; an important game to see who is going on to the Super Bowl. But as I watched the news Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, I almost felt like there must be nothing else going on in the world than this Sunday football game. Though I would like to see the Seattle Seahawks go on to the Super Bowl this year, for me the amount of attention our local newscasts were giving to this one news item was more than I personally felt necessary and said so to my wife. I was interested to find out news of other happenings across the country and around the world. Yet for several nights I almost felt like the only SIGNIFICANT thing going on was this upcoming football game.
With my mind already struck in such a way, Saturday evening while going online I noticed a little news clip on the computer screen that I just had to click on. It was news about two more West Virginia miners who, despite valiant efforts to escape, had died following a conveyor belt fire. I asked my wife if she had seen that on the news and she hadn’t. I couldn’t help shake from my mind the fact that during the midst of all the hype about a football game there were LIVES LOST and the lives of families had been dramatically impacted.
Watching sports or involvement in other activities can be a wonderful outlet and a good break from the day to day serious stuff of life. However, while the games are played and various activities are enjoyed, LIFE IS HAPPENING and LIVES ARE IMPACTED. We need to not lose sight of that which is of the greatest consequence. This football season will come to an end with a team and its fans gaining the bragging rights for the season, but next year it will be a whole new ballgame! The SIGNIFICANCE of each season seems to diminish with the beginning of the next.
Note the sorrowful words of the prophet Jeremiah as he grieved over the nation.
“(20) ‘The HARVEST is PAST, the SUMMER is ENDED, and WE ARE NOT SAVED.’ (21) For the wound of the daughter of my people is my heart wounded; I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me. (22) Is there no balm in Gilead? IS THERE NO PHYSICIAN THERE? WHY then has the health of the daughter of my people NOT BEEN RESTORED?” (Jeremiah 8:20-22 ESV)
The seasons were passing, but hearts were not being convicted. Activities were engaged in, but souls were not being won. As we consider the relative shortness of life (James 4:14) we need to be careful regarding what we get caught up in the most. There are people around us who are hurting. There are people around us who are LOSING THEIR LIVES and are in need of hearing the message of hope we have received. The Great Physician has come (Matthew 9:12-13) and the Gospel of Jesus is still the most SIGNIFICANT NEWS for the lives of others every day of the week. May we uphold its SIGNIFICANCE in our own life as we draw the attention of others to Him.
Have a great day KEEPING THE RIGHT GOAL IN VIEW!

Sharing The King's Open Invitation!
Yesterday we noted the invitation our Lord offered. (Matthew 11:28-30) We also considered some ideas associated with Jesus’ parable of the wedding feast. (Matthew 22:1-14) In the parable, when the invitation was rejected, it was opened further. One important truth to keep in mind is that what God plans He will have. (Proverbs 19:21)
We read…
“(8) Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. (9) Go therefore to the main roads and INVITE TO THE WEDDING FEAST AS MANY AS YOU FIND.’ (10) And those SERVANTS WENT out into the roads and GATHERED ALL WHOM THEY FOUND, BOTH BAD AND GOOD. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.” (Matthew 22:8-10 ESV)
Did you notice to whom the invitation was extended? Keep in mind the spiritual implications of this parable. It was not a picture of “selective” evangelism! It was not looking for a response from just tax-collectors and prostitutes. (Matthew 21:32) Nor was it only for the poor, crippled, lame, and blind. (Luke 14:13) The invitation went out INDISCRIMINATELY to both the good and the bad! It was extended to “as many” as could be found!
Certainly repentance, conformity to the Will of God and transformation of character is necessary for remaining (note Matthew 22:11-13). However, God has offered, in Christ, a very open invitation to come and receive the benefits the blood of Jesus was shed to provide.
Do we engage in “selective” evangelism? Do we consider what some are and determine they cannot change and therefore we need not offer them the opportunity? Or do we extend the invitation of Christ with a recognition of the change He can bring about in a life? Not all will accept. Not all may allow change to take place. Nevertheless, let us continue to hold out the “Kings’ Invitation”, knowing that as we do our part, God will provide the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:5-7) We are to continue in service as His messengers.
Have a great day LIVING AS A MESSENGER OF THE KING!

A King's Open Invitation!
Receiving an invitation from a king would be something not to be taken lightly. To be the recipient would probably make us feel pretty special or at least privileged. And so should be the feeling in view of the invitation Jesus has offered to us.
Jesus said,
“(28) COME to me, ALL WHO LABOR AND ARE HEAVY LADEN, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV)
Jesus came to establish His Kingdom. He is to be recognized as “King of kings and Lord of lords.” (1 Timothy 6:15) Under His Lordship He desires for us to find help with our burden and rest for our soul. Under the authority of what better Monarch could we live? Nevertheless, His invitation has been rejected by many. This was a picture Jesus presented in His parable of the wedding feast. (Mathew 22:1-14) Some flat out refused to come. (Matthew 22:3) Others paid no attention and went off to do their own thing. (Matthew 22:5) And yet others treated the messengers cruelly. (Matthew 22:6) Such responses to the invitation deemed those first invited to be unworthy. (Matthew 22:8)
When the preaching of Paul and Barnabas was rejected by many Jews in Antioch of Pisidia, Paul boldly stated…
“…It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you THRUST IT ASIDE AND JUDGE YOURSELVES UNWORTHY OF ETERNAL LIFE, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.” (Acts 13:46b ESV)
Though others may cast aside or think lightly of the invitation offered to humanity, what marks our response? Are we EXCITED about the offer? Are we EAGER to participate in His feast? Though we do not merit being on His guest list, are we responding AS WORTHILY AS WE CAN? His big event is something we do not want to pass without having ACCEPTED the opportunity He has provided. There is no better time than “now” (2 Corinthians 6:2) to be sure we have wholeheartedly ACCEPTED the salvation our King came to earth and made possible. May our life continually be an appropriate response to His invitation!
Have a great day ACCEPTING THE PRIVILEGE CHRIST PROVIDES!

Don't Balk!
In baseball, when a pitcher begins his pitch, but does not FOLLOW THROUGH, it is called a “balk.” When a salesman pitches a sale and does not FOLLOW THROUGH with what is agreed upon, it is called “fraud.” When people say they are going to do something and do not FOLLOW THROUGH it may be called either “lip service” or a downright “lie.”
One of my frustrations in ministry is to see how easy it is for people to say they will attend services or doing something else, but then not FOLLOW THROUGH. When I hear the words my expectation is for them to FOLLOW THROUGH, but perhaps they allow other activities to get in the way or they simply lack the desire to do what they said they would do. It used to be that a “man’s word was his bond”, but today when conducting business you had better have it in writing and maybe even notarized. Sad to think that this way of the world has also drifted into the church. However, the tendency is not new. Jesus quoted from Isaiah when he accused some of the Jewish leaders of offering mere lip service. (Matthew 15:7-9) Lack of FOLLOW THROUGH has been a problem for ages.
Remember Jesus’ parable of the two sons.
“(28) “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ (20) And he answered, ‘I WILL NOT,’ BUT afterward he CHANGED HIS MIND AND WENT. (30) And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I GO, SIR,’ BUT DID NOT GO.” (Matthew 21:28-30 ESV)
When Jesus went on to ask which of the two sons did the will of his father, the response was “The first.” (Matthew 21:31) The first son responded in rebellion to the father’s request, but then changed his mind and went. There’s a word for that. The Greek is “metanoia”. Our English word is “repentance”! Perhaps this son began doing something else, but could not enjoy it because in the back of his mind he kept hearing the father’s request. Have we ever experienced such a thing? Fortunately he had a conscience that could still be touched. He was humble enough to admit he was wrong and own up to his error. He also had a desire to do better in the future. This son may not have said another word; just went and got busy. His actions spoke for themselves. He was not enslaved by the past. Though he began wrong he repented and obeyed. He did the will of the father.
The second son, on the other hand, appears to have found it easy to say he would go. Such words of willingness would encourage any father. What a good son. How respectful. Unfortunately, that’s as close to doing as he got. This son did not FOLLOW THROUGH. He may not have lied. He may have really intended to obey, but got side-tracked. Don’t we know that challenge also?!!
In this parable Jesus portrayed two categories of people. There were (and are) the openly irreligious (or rebellious) and the hypocritical professors. He charged the chief priests and elders (acclaimed followers of God’s Law) with rejecting the testimony of John the Baptist (and now rejecting the Messiah Himself) while the tax collectors and the prostitutes (those who were guilty of not following God’s moral code) were entering the kingdom ahead of them. And even when the leaders became aware of this they did not change their own minds so they could enter also. (Matthew 21:31-32)
Let us remember that quite often it is our actions which speak louder than words. If we have been neglectful, the way to make amends is not to promise better things (though statements for public accountability can strengthen our resolve), but to just get up and do them! As the great Referee of Life, may God not call us on a “balk.” May we also not stand in God’s Court to be charged with “fraud.” Rather let our life move beyond the words to FOLLOW THROUGH in that which is pleasing and glorifying to our Heavenly Father. Let us just do it!
Have a great day LOVINGLY AND LOYALLY LIVING LIFE BEYOND LIP SERVICE!

Beware!
By the entrance to a country store, a stranger noticed a sign which read, “Danger! Beware Of Dog!” Upon entering through the door he observed a harmless old hound dog sleeping contentedly on the floor beside the cash register. “Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?”, he asked the store manager. “Yep, that’s him,” came the reply. Amused, the stranger remarked, “That certainly doesn’t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?” “Because,” the owner responded, “before I posted the sign people kept tripping over him.” [source: bulletin clipping]
James warned…
“So whoever KNOWS the RIGHT THING TO DO and FAILS TO DO it, for him IT IS SIN.” (James 4:17 ESV)
Though it has been advised to “let sleeping dogs lie”, we are not dogs and we are to be living active lives for good. Wrong action as well as INACTION can impact the lives of others; even causing them to stumble. James’ warning was that “not doing” can be sin as much as “wrong doing.”
To the church at Thessalonica, Paul urged…
“(6) Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you KEEP AWAY FROM ANY BROTHER WHO IS WALKING IN IDLENESS and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. (7) For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because WE WERE NOT IDLE WHEN WE WERE WITH YOU,” (2 Thessalonians 3:6-7 ESV)
Walking in idleness? Isn’t that sort of an oxymoron? Christianity is to be a life of ACTION! If we are sleeping we need to wake up! (Ephesians 5:14) If we are idle we need to prepare our minds for ACTION! (1 Peter 1:13) We are to be walking in righteous activity to the glory of God. Let us continue to walk wisely (Ephesians 5:15-16), making the most the opportunities that come our way.
Have a great day OF GODLY ACTIVITY!

Fruitful Focus!
Joseph was an amazing young man. Though he may have pushed his older brother’s buttons by telling them about his dreams (Genesis 37:5-11), he was still one who knew character counted for something. (note Genesis 39:6b-10) Joseph had quite the life, a life which took him from a humble family of shepherds to eventually being a ruler over Egypt, second to only Pharaoh. (Genesis 41:40-41) His life journey between those two points had its ups and downs, twice finding himself in the PITS!
At the hands of Joseph’s brothers we read…
“(23) So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. (24) And THEY TOOK HIM AND CAST HIM INTO A PIT. THE PIT was empty; there was no water in it.” (Genesis 37:23-24 ESV)
While in prison (after the false accusation of Potiphar’s wife) Joseph stated…
“For I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me INTO THE PIT.” (Genesis 40:15 ESV)
Though Joseph could look back on his life and see the purpose of God in it all (Genesis 45:5-8), during the more challenging moments he may have had difficulty seeing the hand of God at work. He encountered some life experiences that were literally the PITS! However, he continued to press on making the most of the situations that arose. Though God did not spare Joseph the trials, he was delivered or rescued from them. (Acts 7:9)
One person may refer to life as a bowl of cherries and another individual responds, “Yes, full of PITS!” What marks our life focus? We should not despair and quit life because of the PITS. Recognize there are the PITS, but focus on and enjoy the juicy fruit! Life still has its sweet side.
As we look at life we all have two lists to draw from; good things and bad things. Which list we choose to focus on will make all the difference in the world. The PITS in my life have not been quite as severe or perhaps as fearful as Joseph’s may have been and I don’t know about all the experiences of your life. However, we have the same God to look toward as Joseph did and we need to learn to trust that ultimately He is still in control! Wherever Joseph found himself, he tried to make the most of the situation and gave his best in whatever tasks were at hand. We would do well to press on in the same manner. We may not always know what God has in mind for each situation of life, but amazing things can take place if we are patient and submissive to the Will of God and what He desires to work in and through us.
When in the PITS we are in a good position to look up. God can produce marvelous fruit in our life if we maintain our focus rightfully on Him. Let us trust that He has something in mind and rely on His strength to carry us through. We may not be spared, but we will ultimately be delivered. May we continue to focus on the sweet fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) that are a part of the sweet life properly connected to God.
Have a great day CONTINUING TO SAVOR LIFE’S SWEET REWARDS!

Way And Away!
Yesterday we noted Solomon’s contrast between the one who would heed instruction and the one who would reject correction. Note the verse again as it reads in the New Century Version.
We read…
“Whoever accepts correction is ON THE WAY TO LIFE, but whoever ignores correction will LEAD OTHERS AWAY FROM LIFE.” (Proverbs 10:17 NCV) [© 1991, Word Bibles, Dallas, TX]
The implication here is that of leading either toward LIFE or away from LIFE. Jesus referred to Himself as the Way, the Truth, and THE LIFE. (John 14:6) What is the direction of our LIFE in relation to “THE LIFE”?
Jesus warned…
“Whoever is not WITH ME is AGAINST ME, and whoever does not GATHER with me SCATTERS.” (Matthew 12:30 ESV)
There is no middle ground implied in Jesus’ statement! That should give us cause for serious consideration of the example our LIFE is setting. We cannot lead where we are not going. Are we going “The Way” worth leading toward?
Remaining open to correction and instruction will aid us in staying on the path to LIFE. Let us walk in the wisdom of God’s Word so that the LIFE we live will be one worth following.
Have a great day LIVING IN A WAY THAT LEADS TO “THE WAY”!

Loves Company!
It as been said that misery loves company. It seems that “rebellion” does also. There are some things individuals would perhaps not do alone that they are ready to involve themselves with when in the company of others who are also willing. Youths will carry out malicious acts when joined by peers that they might consider unthinkable if acting alone. And because of a spirit of rebellion against what is right, misery comes to others and ultimately to themselves.
Solomon stated…
“Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but HE WHO REJECTS REPROOF LEADS OTHERS ASTRAY.” (Proverbs 10:17 ESV)
To listen to and follow the instruction of the Word helps keep us on the right path; “the path of life.” However, when that instruction and correction are ignored or rejected, the potential is for not only ourselves to go astray, but to take others with us.
Besides considering the company we keep, we should give thought to the company we lead. We are all EXAMPLES to someone, whether that be bad or good. This is why we need to consider the actions of our life; they relate to more than just ourselves. Our choices have power to impact the lives of others either negatively or positively and as we journey through life there will be followers.
We may love company, but let us be sure it is the right company. Our desire should always be to be in the company of the saved by living in accordance with the One Who has saved us. Accompanied by His Spirit through living out the truth of His Word, our life can be an EXAMPLE most worth following. May we lead on in all that is right and true.
Have a great day LOVING WHAT ACCOMPANIES OUR SALVATION!

What's Crouching At Your Door?
Remember the story of the jealousy of Cain toward Abel when Abel’s sacrifice was accepted by God, but Cain’s was not? (Genesis 4:3-4) God knew that Cain was angry. Cain was angry with Abel when he should have been angry with himself. God also knew what would happen if Cain kept that anger brewing within himself.
“(6) The LORD said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? (7) If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, SIN IS CROUCHING AT THE DOOR. ITS DESIRE IS FOR YOU, BUT YOU MUST RULE OVER IT.’” (Genesis 4:6-7 ESV)
As long as Cain harbored that anger within him the time was going to come when he would have opportunity to vent that anger. Before that happened, rather than allowing his anger to master him, he needed to master it! God was trying to get Cain to consider his actions and see that he was mad at the wrong person. He himself was the one who had done wrong. Unfortunately Cain did allow the sin to master him and he killed his brother.
Oh how we need to be careful of harboring anger within ourselves. It becomes like a cancer that eats at us until we are consumed and no longer in control.
No wonder Paul advised…
“(26) Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, (27) And GIVE NO OPPORTUNITY TO THE DEVIL.” (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, “(27) for ANGER GIVES A MIGHTY FOOTHOLD TO THE DEVIL.” If Satan is crouching with sin at your door, slam it on that foot! Don’t let him get a foothold!
May we accept responsibility for our own actions, and even when someone else may be at fault, let us be forgiving so that Satan does not gain a foothold and use that anger to the injury of ourselves or others. Master it!
Have a great day MASTERED BY GOD’S SPIRIT!

The Greatest Of These!
Paul declared…
“So now FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE abide, these three; BUT THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)
Faith! Jesus complimented and encouraged great faith. The Hebrew writer stated that without it we cannot please God. (Hebrews 11:6) However, Paul declared an individual could have great faith, but if it was not accompanied by LOVE, they would be nothing! (1 Corinthians 13:2)
Hope! Assurance of hope is necessary to help us through tough times. We need encouragement that our pressing on is worth the effort. Without hope we would be left with despair.
Though faith, hope, and LOVE abide, Paul elevated LOVE to a greater height than the other two. That doesn’t negate their value, but directs us to consider what there is about LOVE that gives it its special status. Where would we be without the LOVE of God? (Romans 5:8) Without LOVE in our life, where would be the basis and the power for Christian living? LOVE (according to the first three verses of 1 Corinthians 13) is an essential quality to possess!
There is nothing else like “agape” (selfless, God-like) LOVE. This LOVE can create a bond greater than anything else. LOVE for God provides a steadfast resolve to cling to Him and His Will. LOVE seeks the best for others. LOVE is a powerful motivator in the face of all odds, empowering endurance through much. LOVE emboldens to even place oneself in danger for the sake of loved ones.
Though we should cling to our faith and hope, we would do well to also consider the enduring essence of LOVE above the other two. A time will come when there will no longer be a need for faith because we shall fully know as we are fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:12) A time will also come when there will no longer be a need for hope because it will be attained. (note Romans 8:24) On the other hand LOVE will always exist to be experienced. LOVE is just as eternal as God Himself Who is LOVE. (1 John 4:8) As we consider the Greatest LOVER who first LOVED us (1 John 4:19), may we allow that Divine essence to grow in us, becoming the foundation on which our actions and speech are based.
Have a great day EMPOWERED BY A NEVER ENDING LOVE!

God Will Provide! (part 2 of 2)
As we noted yesterday, Abraham was told to make an offering and so an offering he went to make. The request was one that surely appeared to be confusing, but Abraham trusted God to provide a LAMB and God did. The faith of Abraham is worth noting and imitating.
As John the Baptist was preparing the way for the Messiah, he drew attention to another LAMB God had in mind to provide. This provision was one which revealed the extent of the mission Jesus came to fulfill.
We read…
“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, THE LAMB OF GOD, WHO TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD!’” (John 1:29 ESV)
There was sin to be atoned for, but what man offered was not sufficient to meet the need. (Hebrews 10:3-4) As John introduced the Messiah he pointed to Him as the great provision of God for dealing with sin. Jesus -- the seed of Abraham through Whom all the nations of the earth would be blessed -- came destined to be THE LAMB OF GOD to fulfill that purpose and meet our great need. In faith, John proclaimed it. In faith we are to accept it.
Paul referred to Jesus as “our Passover LAMB”. (1 Corinthians 5:7) Peter declared that it was with the “precious blood of Christ, LIKE THAT OF A LAMB WITHOUT BLEMISH OR SPOT” that we have been redeemed. (1 Peter 1:19)
Abraham trusted God to provide a LAMB, God did, and Isaac was spared. John pointed the attention to Jesus as THE LAMB OF GOD sent to take away our sins. It is the sacrifice of THIS LAMB that is completely sufficient to spare us from the penalty our sins deserve.
The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(12) But when CHRIST had OFFERED FOR ALL TIME A SINGLE SACRIFICE FOR SINS, he sat down at the right hand of God, (13) waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. (14) For BY A SINGLE OFFERING HE HAS PERFECTED FOR ALL TIME THOSE WHO ARE BEING SANCTIFIED.” (Hebrews 10:12-14)
Under the old law, sacrifices had to be offered again and again. (Hebrews 10:11) Jesus -- THE LAMB OF GOD -- only had to offer Himself once and that sacrifice is the adequate means “for all time” to provide eternal salvation and life. May we continue to learn that what God has said He will provide, He will provide, and it will be sufficient to meet the need!
Have a great day ACCEPTING AND TRUSTING GOD’S GREATEST PROVISION!

God Will Provide! (part 1 of 2)
When we think of individuals who showed great faith, Abraham’s name usually comes to mind. We marvel at his willingness to leave his homeland to follow God (Genesis 12:1-4), not knowing where he was being led. We wonder at his trust in God to fulfill the promise of a child even though both he and Sarah were well advanced in years. (Genesis 15:1-6) Then when God did give them Isaac, we may be shocked at his readiness to offer that son. (Genesis 22) However, it was all related to Abraham’s willingness to obey God and trust Him to fulfill what He had promised.
Before arriving at the place, Abraham said to the young men who accompanied them…
“Stay here with the donkey; I AND THE BOY WILL GO over there and worship AND COME AGAIN TO YOU.” (Genesis 22:5 ESV)
Did you notice what was implied? Abraham did not say he would return alone.
Then when Isaac asked regarding the offering, we read…
“Abraham said, ‘GOD WILL PROVIDE FOR HIMSELF THE LAMB for a burnt offering, my son.’ So they went bother of them together.” (Genesis 22:8 ESV)
They went on in faith. In trusting obedience, Abraham prepared the altar. (Genesis 22:9) He drew the knife revealing a faith that was unwavering. (Genesis 22:10) And God provided A RAM to be offered. (Genesis 22:13)
Regardless of how confusing the situation may have seemed, Abraham revealed the extent of his trust in God’s provision. He didn’t have to have it all figured out because his faith was in the One Who did! God had made promises and Abraham’s obedience revealed he believed God would fulfill them. May we develop the same kind of trust.
Have a great day GROWING IN UNWAVERING FAITH!

Marvelous!
Over some things, either good or bad, we might find ourselves marveling. We may observe things which are either above or below what should be anticipated. Then there are the realizations which are just simply marvelous.
Note two situations which caused our Lord to marvel.
“(8) But the centurion replied, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. (9) For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.’ (10) WHEN JESUS HEARD THIS, HE MARVELED and said to those who followed him, ‘Truly, I tell you, WITH NO ONE IN ISRAEL HAVE I FOUND SUCH FAITH.’” (Matthew 8:8-10 ESV)
And…
“(4) And Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.’ (5) And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. (6) AND HE MARVELED BECAUSE OF THEIR UNBELIEF. And he went about among the villages teaching.” (Mark 6:6 ESV)
Jesus marveled at the FAITH of a centurion and then He marveled at the UNBELIEF of those in His hometown of Nazareth. Where FAITH might not be expected it came about, and where BELIEF should have been anticipated it was not present. The key to ACCEPTANCE is not always based on either national or religious advantages, but rather the individual openness to the truth when confronted with it.
Though Jesus was rejected by some, HE WAS JOYFULLY ACCEPTED by others and the same is true today. When Jesus told the parable of the tenants, He capped it off with a quotation from Psalm 118:22-23.
We read…
“Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘THE STONE THAT THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CORNERSTONE; this was the Lord’s doing, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES’?’” (Matthew 21:42 ESV) [also Mark 12:11-12]
We may marvel at those who simply refuse to ACCEPT JESUS as the cornerstone, but for us who do ACCEPT HIM as such, it is a marvelous truth to acknowledge. Recognizing Him as the cornerstone, our life can be brought properly in line with the will of God. And having our life built up in the truth of Jesus destines us toward an eternity that will be wholly marvelous to experience.
Have a great day JOYFULLY LIVING IN THE WONDER OF THE LORD!

The Wicked Before God!
Have you ever dropped a large candle on your toe? Its weight and solid state can cause injury. Have you ever been hit over the head or on the arm with a candle? Though it might break it can still hurt. Getting close enough to a candle for the hot wax to drip on us can cause a burn.
All of this may also be true of our encounters with the WICKed of this world. They may think they are enLIGHTened and are full of BRIGHT ideas, not recognizing the great darkness within them. (Matthew 6:23). As they live according to their WICKed ways, we may feel the effect of them tromping on our toes as we try to walk in faithfulness to God. We may feel their blows and may even get burned by their actions. However, God will ultimately deal with the WICKed, and before Him they cannot stand.
David wrote…
“As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; AS WAX MELTS BEFORE FIRE, SO THE WICKED SHALL PERISH BEFORE GOD!” (Psalm 68:2 ESV)
Our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29) He should be approached and worshiped with reverence and awe. (Hebrews 12:28) When it comes to God’s exceeding glory and wisdom (Isaiah 55:8-9), mankind cannot hold a candle to Him. Those who continue in their WICKedness before Him will melt away.
David went on to encourage…
“But THE RIGHTEOUS shall be glad; they SHALL EXULT BEFORE GOD; they shall be jubilant with joy!” (Psalm 68:3 ESV)
Though the WICKed will melt away before God, keeping our faith in Him we can continue to stand strong even in the midst of a WICKed world. As God’s children, seeking to do His Will, we can approach Him with gladness and joy. May we keep the WICK of our faith trimmed and burning, allowing the LIGHT of truth to shine around us.
Have a great day KNOWING GOD IS IN CONTROL!

Pleasing Others!
Pleasing others is a GOOD way to make and keep peace. This is true in the relationship between husbands and wives. It is true among siblings and within families in general. Considering the interests of others is a path to peace within the church rather than merely thinking of our own interests. (Philippians 2:4) Consideration of others in society at large can also lead toward peacefulness. However, when it comes to pleasing, there are two important factors to consider.
Note the first factor stated by the Apostles when their message was rejected.
“But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘WE MUST OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN.’” (Acts 5:29 ESV)
What is pleasing to God must always be given first consideration. The Apostles could not be stopped because their first priority was to please God.
Though Paul aimed to be all things to all men that he might win them to Christ (1 Corinthians 9:19-22), had he merely attempted to do what was pleasing to men, he would not have been a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10) As he preached the Gospel of Jesus, for Paul, pleasing God (1 Thessalonians 2:4) took first place above all else.
Note a second factor stated by Paul in his letter to the church at Rome.
“Let each of us PLEASE HIS NEIGHBOR FOR HIS GOOD, to build him up.” (Romans 15:2 ESV)
Yes, pleasing others is something for us to consider. However, did you note Paul did not say to please others simply for “their” pleasure? The pleasing was to be for THEIR GOOD! Consideration is to be with regard to what will benefit and build others up rather than tearing them down. And the ultimate GOOD we should consider for others is what will draw their attention toward God and His Will.
Pleasing God, then others, and lastly himself appears to have been the submissive way Paul went about his ministry. Paul was mindful of setting a proper example and his life is worth considering because of the way in which he tried to follow the example of Christ. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 11:1) May we continue to seek to please God and then others for THEIR GOOD. In the process we will find much GOOD for ourselves.

A Place For Prayer!
The statement has been made that seven days without prayer makes one weak. Here we are eight days into this new year. Have you been praying? Does prayer have an important place in your life? How strong our prayer life is can have a direct correlation with how strong we are in our Christian walk.
Paul urged the church at Thessalonica to…
“PRAY WITHOUT CEASING,” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV, NKJV, KJV)
When Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow, Luke recorded…
“And he told them a parable to the effect that they OUGHT ALWAYS TO PRAY AND NOT LOSE HEART.” (Luke 18:1 ESV)
Perhaps we think about the place of prayer being associated with meal time, bed time, worship assembly time, Bible study time, panic time, etc. However, we ought to consider the place for prayer being ANYTIME of day. Though Jesus referred to having some very private time for prayer (Matthew 6:6) there is a sense in which a spirit of communication with our God should be ongoing. The most important room is the one we make in our life for UNCEASING prayer.
If we enjoy talking to those we love, remember God’s ear is attentive to our prayers ANYTIME, day or night. The combination of spending much time in God’s Word and time spent in prayer will help keep our faith and spirit strong. May we keep on talking and trusting as our relationship with Him continues.
Have a great day IN CONVERSATION WITH GOD!

Strengthened To Stand!
Growth is a process. Building up strength is gradual. But it should be taking place. Effort is necessary to make it happen. We can’t expect strengthening to come by doing nothing.
The following strengthening concept has been suggested. Take a ten pound potato sack and lift it several times each morning for a week. On the second week repeat the daily exercise with a twenty pound potato sack. On the third week continue the daily exercise with a fifty pound potato sack. If this has all gone well, on the fourth week try putting a few potatoes into the sack.
Someone has stated, “It is difficult for an empty sack to stand upright.” [source:”1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] We might go on to say that trying to build up physical strength with an empty potato sack will bring no benefit either. For us to mature and stand strong spiritually we need to BE FILLED, but with the right stuff; not filled with “potatoes”, but with “fruit” that will help us gain strong spiritual stature.
Note Paul’s prayer for the Christians at Philippi.
“(9) And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, (10) so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, (11) FILLED WITH THE FRUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11 ESV)
First of all, to be fruitful we must have a proper connection to the life source. (i.e. John 15:4-5) Properly connected to our Lord we should then BE FILLED with a fruitfulness that glorifies God and upholds His standard for life. Our life needs to BE FILLED with the “fruit of the Spirit”; the inner qualities Paul listed in his letter to the church at Galatia: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) Such qualities prompting and strengthening our actions will offer ongoing support for an “upright” life before God and among our fellowman.
Have a great day WITH SPIRITUAL SUBSTANCE TO SUPPORT YOUR LIFE!

Turning Points!
One of the members of our congregation recently fell and fractured her hip. As I talked with her a couple days ago, she mentioned she was still having some trouble turning to the left. I remarked that what we all need to try to do is keep TURNING TO THE RIGHT. Laughing at my statement, she stated that was what she was trying to do.
As we travel through life and consider the turns which may need to be made, three RIGHT TURNS can get us to the left, but two wrongs still never make a RIGHT! During a lifetime there may be many turning points. It is important to consider the way in which our life is headed. Are we maintaining a course on the RIGHT path?
Solomon referred to those…
“(13) who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, (14) who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, (15) men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways.” (Proverbs 2:13-15 ESV)
For some their life seems to be marked by many wrong turns. However, all hope is not lost. Though much time may have been spent in turning the wrong direction, as long as there is life there is opportunity to TURN TO THE RIGHT.
Note the following exhortations of God given through the prophet Ezekiel.
“Again, when a wicked person TURNS away from the wickedness he has committed AND DOES WHAT IS JUST AND RIGHT, he shall save his life.” (Ezekiel 18:27 ESV)
“Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ yet if he TURNS from his sin AND DOES WHAT IS JUST AND RIGHT, … (16) None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has DONE WHAT IS JUST AND RIGHT; he shall surely live.” (Ezekiel 33:14 & 16 ESV)
Similar statements can also be found in Ezekiel 18:21 and 33:19. As long as there is life there is opportunity to make a U-TURN; to repent and TURN TO THE RIGHT way of God. Ezekiel was to be diligent in warning the wicked because it is dangerous to put off the opportunity of turning back to God.
Note David’s prayer.
“LEAD ME, O LORD, IN YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS because of my enemies; MAKE YOUR WAY STRAIGHT BEFORE ME.” (Psalm 5:8 ESV)
As we continue our journey in this realm, let us continue to TURN TO THE RIGHT, seeking God’s Way of righteousness laid out before us. It is always RIGHT to do RIGHT and live RIGHT and to be doing so RIGHT now! May we continue walking the course God has marked out for us to travel.
Have a great day STAYING ON THE STRAIT AND NARROW WAY! (Matthew 7:14 KJV)

Pay Attention!
Paying attention can be critical to various areas of life. I find myself in trouble when my wife has spoken to me and I have not paid attention. It is important to pay attention when driving. If one does not pay attention while cooking, proper measurement of ingredients may be missed or spills can take place. Working in a lab, lack of paying attention can cause serious accidents and injury. It is also very important to pay attention in school in order to learn the material and be prepared for TESTING.
This life has its TESTS. What we know and how we prepare ourselves for living will dynamically impact how well we will handle these TESTS. It is important to pay close attention to the things we are learning, making sure we are getting them right.
Peter wrote to Christians who were going through severe trials (1 Peter 4:12) and who also needed to be aware that there would be some who would either challenge the truth or pervert it. (note 2 Peter 2:1-3) In the face of such TESTING there was the need to pay attention to what he had taught them. (2 Peter 1:12-15)
Peter encouraged…
“(19) And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which YOU WILL DO WELL TO PAY ATTENTION as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, (20) knowing this first of all, that NO PROPHECY OF SCRIPTURE COMES FROM SOMEONE’S OWN INTERPRETATION. (21) For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, BUT MEN SPOKE FROM GOD AS THEY WERE CARRIED ALONG BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.” (2 Peter 1:19-21 ESV)
The Bible is the best interpreter of itself. As we read it, we should recognize how it all fits together. We can rely on the word of the prophets and the Apostles as they taught and wrote by the inspiration of God. We are so fortunate to have the message of God preserved in written form so we, like the Bereans (Acts 17:10-11), can search the Scriptures daily to be sure what we are being taught is true.
Someone has referred to the BIBLE as “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.” Let us pay close attention as we read the Word. Having just begun a new year is a good time to recommit to spending daily time reading the Bible. Continually refreshing our memory is a safeguard (Philippians 3:1) for us. Much depends upon it. What we come to learn will aid our focus and resolve to press on when times of TESTING come.
Have a great day MAINTAINING PREPAREDNESS WITH THE WORD!

Truth Or Consequences!
I found it interesting that as New Year’s Eve approached, a couple news broadcasts discussed the topic of the “Cure For The Hangover.” A number of “cures” for hangovers have been offered over the years, but the conclusion of these news reports was that there is none. It appears the only cure for the hangover is to not get drunk. Interest in such news reports and studies reflects how many don’t want to change their BEHAVIOR, they are only interested in someone coming up with a method to either diminish or do away with the consequences for choices made. This is not only true with regard to drinking, but also with choices of sexual BEHAVIOR, the use of drugs, lack of consideration for others and what is theirs, devaluing of life, etc.
The truth is, that which is not good for the body (or the spirit or soul) should be avoided. The breaking of either God’s natural laws or spiritual laws has it’s consequences. When bad choices are made there is a price to be paid either mentally, physically, socially, or spiritually. If there is no desire for BEHAVIOR to be changed or transformed, where can hope be found?
Paul urged…
“(12) LET NOT SIN therefore REIGN IN YOUR MORTAL BODIES, to make you obey their passions. (13) Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but PRESENT YOURSELVES TO GOD as those who have been brought from death to life, AND YOUR MEMBERS TO GOD AS INSTRUMENTS FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” (Romans 6:12-13 ESV)
For some, the symptoms of what ails them may be recognized, but the heart is not being changed. To what have we chosen to give our lives? For what purposes are we putting to use our body? Does our BEHAVIOR reflect a genuine interest in seeking to use the members (parts) of our body as instruments of righteousness?
To the church at Ephesus, Paul wrote…
“(17) Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (18) And DO NOT GET DRUNK WITH WINE, for that is debauchery, BUT BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT,” (Ephesians 5:17-18 ESV)
Debauchery is self-indulgent BEHAVIOR that is unrestrained. By being filled with the Spirit and thus being led by the truth of God, we can avoid suffering the consequences that others bring upon themselves. It is only through a changed heart and the transformation of life God brings that we can find deliverance from the consequences of sin. Two “B’s” we must always keeping in mind are “BElieving” and “BEHAVING”!
Have a great day BEING WHAT GOD DESIRES US TO BE!

Starting Fresh!
In the first verse of the first book of the Bible we read…
“(1) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 ESV)
From there the Scriptures reveal the order in which each facet of the creation took place, each seemingly in preparation for the next phase until finally God brought Adam and Eve into being. (Genesis 1:27) There, in the beginning of time for life in this universe was the privilege of being placed in a paradise God had prepared for them. (Genesis 2:8) Then CHOICES WERE MADE, sin was committed, and this paradise was lost. (Genesis 3:23) However, hope was not lost! In Christ, God has provided the means for paradise to be regained.
We have just begun a New Year. We are pressing on into its first week. This year began on a Sunday; the FIRST DAY of the week. What a wonderful way to begin the New Year with the opportunity for worship and fellowship together. Perhaps we have each focused on a sense of having a fresh start. There may be some specific things we plan to do differently this year. We will be FACED WITH CHOICES. Will the opportunities God brings before us be lost or seized?
We cannot change the past. We can only go on from where we are right now. Each day God provides is the FIRST DAY of the rest of our life and an opportunity for a fresh start. What are we making of it?
Jeremiah encouraged…
“(22) The STEADFAST LOVE OF THE LORD never ceases; HIS MERCIES never come to an end; (23) they ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; great is your faithfulness. (24) ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’” (Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)
With the beginning of each new day God provides, we have the opportunity to accept HIS STEADFAST LOVE and HIS MERCY. These refreshing blessings should never be taken for granted, but should encourage us to continually seek to please the One Who provides the opportunity to receive them.
God has brought us life. He has provided His commands. He offers His wisdom and guidance. WE CHOOSE whether or not we will accept it all. Are we getting off to a fresh right start?
Have a great day USING THIS FIRST DAY WISELY!

The Beginning!
[01/02/2006 “teEn-MAIL”]
THE BEGINNING!
I wasn’t born yesterday so there are things which people can’t easily pull over on me. I have gained some wisdom over the years. I have gotten smart about a lot of things. However, there is still much for me to learn. At times I feel the need to find someone who is older and wiser to help me understand things better. There are people who have been around longer than I. Nevertheless, even then I recognize they too are limited in their knowledge as well.
When it comes to verifying the facts of particular events, it is wise to try to find sources relating to those happenings that are as close to the time of their occurrence as possible. The closer we can get to the eyewitness accounts the more reliable the information tends to be. In our attempt to come to grips with the truth regarding spiritual matters, the place to begin is with HE Who was from before the beginning.
Regarding JESUS, Paul noted…
“(15) HE IS the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. (16) For BY HIM all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -- all things were created THROUGH HIM and FOR HIM. (17) And HE IS before all things, and IN HIM all things hold together. (18) And HE IS the head of the body, the church. HE IS THE BEGINNING, the firstborn from the dead, that IN EVERYTHING HE MIGHT BE PREEMINENT.” (Colossians 1:15-18 ESV)
JESUS was there in the beginning when all of creation was brought into existence. BY HIM, THROUGH HIM, and FOR HIM all things were created! That being so, it is a sign of wisdom for us to seek to understand how all things properly relate to HIM. HE is the beginning and firstborn from the dead in the sense He arose never to die again. And in the power of His resurrection is the assurance of ours. (1 Corinthians 15:20-23) True life for us begins WITH HIM and our hope of eternal life depends ON HIM. Therefore it is important for us to live acknowledging that in all things JESUS is to be seen as PREEMINENT; number one supreme!
As we begin this New Year, may our steadfast resolve be FOR HIM to be truly seen as the Lord and Master of our life. HE wasn’t just born yesterday! HE has always been and ever will be! We can rely upon HIS wisdom!
Have a great day WITH LIFE LINKED TO THE ONE WHO HAS SEEN IT ALL!

In The Midst Of Change!
We have just changed from the month of December to the month of January. We have also changed from one year to another. Looking back over the past century (the twentieth) it is easy to see the many changes brought about during that time. However, even during the first five years of this twenty-first century the technological changes have continued to come rapidly. Looking at society we can also note the ongoing change of desires, ideologies, and values.
Change often makes us nervous and sometimes rightly so because not all changes are good. Even when change is good it can frequently makes us uncomfortable. Change does not always come easily because it is far too easy to get ourselves into a rut or become complacent about how our life is at the present.
When things around us are changing there is the need to find something solid to hold onto in order to keep our life from being thrown off balance. It is important to retain a good foundation and sense of direction for life in order to properly navigate through the swirling changes around us. Though many changes will continue to arise there is still A CONSTANT in which we can place our trust.
The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“JESUS CHRIST IS THE SAME YESTERDAY AND TODAY AND FOREVER.” (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)
When we consider the example of our Lord’s life we should note that in His glory and perfection He doesn’t need to change. If anything needs changing it is for our life to be brought into conformity with His Will. The fact we have a Lord Who is unchanging means we can know what to expect as we study His life and teachings and strive to please Him.
With all the come and go and inconsistency that goes on around us, having our faith centered in Jesus Christ will provide the CONSTANT we need to carry us through. His goals and purposes remain CONSTANT and salvation in Him is still available by the same means it always has. Jesus Christ remains the CONSTANT hope for a world so in need of something of certainty. May we keep our focus fixed on Him as our life and words proclaim an unchanging Christ in this changing world.
Have a great day STABILIZED BY FAITH IN CHRIST!
