Precious To Precious!
Many different things are held precious by various individuals in this world. However, much of that which is considered precious will not last. A great deal of it is only related to life in this realm and some of it is even difficult to keep secure here. Some try to hang on to treasures they think will retain their value or increase in it. Items of gold or other precious metals are locked away for safekeeping. It should be remembered that Jesus mentioned how the treasures of earth can be destroyed by moth and rust and can be stolen by thieves. ( Matthew 6:19) What is precious to us that will truly continue to retain or increase its value?
Peter (quoting from Isaiah 40:8) declared that “the word of the Lord remains forever.” ( 1 Peter 1:25) Are we acknowledging its longevity and truly appreciating its preciousness?
Regarding the commands of God, the psalmist David declared...
“MORE TO BE DESIRED ARE THEY THAN GOLD, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” ( Psalm 19:10 ESV)
The Hebrew translated “desired” is a word which refers to “desirableness” or “preciousness” and the NIV translation uses the phrase “MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD.” With our life focused on the abiding Word of God we can be enabled to develop that which is also MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD. God’s Word which is MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD will bring to our individual lives a quality that is of the same preciousness.
Peter encouraged…
“(6) In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, as was necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, (7) so that the tested genuineness of YOUR FAITH -- MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (8) Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, (9) obtaining the OUTCOME OF YOUR FAITH, the SALVATION OF YOUR SOULS.” ( 1 Peter 1:6-9 ESV)
God’s Word; that which is MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD. Genuine faith; a possession MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD and more durable as well. A glorious outcome; the salvation of our soul (the precious eternal abiding aspect of our life). Do we have the priorities right? Are we focusing on that which is truly MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD or any of the other “glitter” the world dangles before our eyes? May we keep our focus on God’s precious Word so as to continue developing a precious sustaining faith that will keep us on track with the eternal goal.
Have a great day KNOWING THE SAVING THAT IS SECURE!
Carl
