Just A Minute?

It has been queried, “Why is it that a minute contains 60 seconds except when it is preceded by ‘Just a’?” [source: calendar quote]

I’m sure we have all heard someone tell us “I’ll be there in just a minute” or “I’ll get to it in just a minute” only to find the minute to which they referred was not a literal minute. Perhaps we have simply come to accept this to be the reality when such words are spoken. However, when it comes to TIME, the long or short of it seems to be relative to what we are either presently doing or what we are anticipating to take place. As we reflect on today being the last day of the year, for some the year may have passed slowly due to things they have endured while for others it may have appeared to fly by too quickly.

TIME is relative. For a child, a five minute timeout is an eternity while eight hours at an amusement park is not long enough. Ninety-some years is old for humanity, but young for a tree. The minutes, hours, days, months, years, all pass differently from individual to individual. Besides all this, just as TIME is not always viewed alike by us, God’s perspective is much different from ours as well. The One Who is not bound by TIME has His own perspective of it and own timetable on which His plans and purposes are based.

In a prayer of Moses recorded in the Psalms we read…
“For A THOUSAND YEARS in your sight are but AS YESTERDAY when it is past, or as , a watch in the night.” (Psalm 90:4 ESV)

Peter also pointed out…
“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord ONE DAY IS AS A THOUSAND YEARS, and A THOUSAND YEARS AS ONE DAY.” (2 Peter 3:8 ESV)

TIME is something to us, but nothing to God! When we compare our earthly lifespan to our eternal Lord, we will recognize how life here truly is “JUST A” mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (James 4:14) And, like Paul, we can begin to look at the challenges of life as being “slight” and “momentary” compared to the “eternal” glory that is to come. (2 Corinthians 4:17)

As we prepare to move from one year to the next, let us simply continue to accept life in the daily doses God brings it. TIME here in reality is short. May we trust in His timing while making the most of the short TIME we have here by seeking to do His Will. Soon the years here will seem as nothing compared to the glorious eternity God has prepared to bring us into.

Have a great day MEASURING LIFE BY GOD’S MEASURE!

Not Bound!

The fact death could not bind Jesus was revealed through His resurrection from the dead; also evidencing the truth that He is the Son of God. (Romans 1:4) The fact Jesus was not bound to this world was made evident by His ascension back to Heaven. (Acts 1:9-11) The reality of our Lord’s existence transcends the time and place of this world and to have our life bound up in His is to find we are not bound by the world either.

There are many ways in which the world tries to retain its grip on us. How well are we resisting? If we are trying to win the battle alone, it is a battle we will lose. Left to ourselves we are bound to be lost. Without Jesus we would still be in bondage to sin. It is through Jesus that deliverance from sin has been made possible. We have also been freed from bondage to this realm. However, if Jesus is not truly acknowledged for Who He is, the benefit of what He came to this earth to accomplish will not be received.

John encouraged…
“(4) For everyone who has been born of God OVERCOMES THE WORLD. And this is the victory that has OVERCOME THE WORLD -- our faith. (5) Who is it that OVERCOMES THE WORLD except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5 ESV)

Three times in these two verses John made reference to OVERCOMING THE WORLD. There is much in this world to OVERCOME. There may be much within ourselves still to OVERCOME. The good news is that when our life is bound up in JESUS we will find the aid necessary to become OVERCOMERS. However, we must be born of God, must have genuine faith, and must also truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

These verses in the New Living Translation read as follows:
“(4) For every child of God defeats this evil world by TRUSTING CHRIST TO GIVE THE VICTORY. (5) And THE ONES WHO WIN THIS BATTLE against the world are THE ONES WHO BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD.” [NLT, © 1997 Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

In Christ we can be “more than conquerors.” (Romans 8:37) We are not bound by the things of this realm because our eternal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ provides the victory over sin and death. (1 Corinthians 15:56-57) And since we are not bound by the standards and wisdom of this world, let us be steadfast, “always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Yes, in Jesus Christ we will OVERCOME it all, but only in Him! May we continue following and trusting in Jesus so as to break the grip this world desires to retain on us.

Have a great day KNOWING THE VICTORY IN CHRIST!

Filled With It!

As I was reading through Romans yesterday I was struck by a verse in the fifteenth chapter which reads…
“May the God of hope FILL YOU WITH ALL JOY AND PEACE IN BELIEVING, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13 ESV)

What grabbed my attention was the mentioning together of JOY and PEACE. We have just come through a time of the year that many in the world have referred to as a great season of JOY and PEACE. I’m sure there were many gatherings and moments filled with such a focus. However, the JOY and PEACE we can have in believing in Jesus is for every season of life! The Greek word translated “fill” in the above verse refers to the idea of something being filled up to the very top or brim so as to lack nothing to the full measure. To keep our focus where it ought to be throughout our life can keep us filled with a sense of JOY and PEACE that will keep out the negatives that might otherwise undermine our faith.

While referring to Jesus, Peter stated…
“(8) Though you have not seen him, YOU LOVE HIM. Though you do not now see him, YOU BELIEVE IN HIM and REJOICE WITH JOY THAT IS INEXPRESSIBLE and filled with glory, (9) obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1:8-9 ESV)

Peter encouraged those to whom he wrote that they could have such a JOY even though they faced many challenges in this world. The genuineness of their faith was being tested. (1 Peter 1:6-7) Nevertheless, to truly believe in Jesus and to maintain their love for Him and His Will had power to instill within them a great sense of INEXPRESSIBLE JOY because of the salvation that was theirs.

Earlier in Paul’s letter to the church at Rome we read…
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” (Romans 5:1 ESV)

Through the giving of Himself on the cross and adequately dealing with our sins, Jesus has made PEACE with God possible. In Paul’s Ephesian letter he made the statement that Jesus Himself is our PEACE. (Ephesians 2:14) In Isaiah’s prophecy regarding the coming Messiah, our Lord was referred to as the “Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) Since that is what He is, it is to Him we should look to find it!

JOY and PEACE! Because of Jesus these are gifts for us to enjoy throughout our life and on into eternity. May we help others come to know where the reality of these can be found and experienced for all the seasons of life.

Have a great day FOCUSED ON THE JESUS FOR ALL SEASONS!

Wandering Here And There!

People FLOCK to all kinds of things. A noise is heard and people FLOCK to the scene to see what is happening. A celebrity comes into town and people FLOCK to where they are with the hope of gaining a glimpse. A sale is advertised and shoppers FLOCK to the store eager to snatch up the bargains. However, in the midst of all of this there is still an aimless wandering. People FLOCK here and there from one thing and one idea to another, but where is the sense of purpose and where is the peace so much desired?

There are many respects in which the world today is no different than the world into which Jesus stepped and walked among mankind. Jesus came face to face with a people described as being “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36 ESV), and He felt compassion for them. He knew how much they were in need of proper leadership and all would be wise to recognize we could be under no better guidance than that which He offers.

The Hebrew writer stated…
“(20) Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead OUR LORD JESUS, THE GREAT SHEPHERD OF THE SHEEP, by the blood of the eternal covenant, (21) equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (Hebrews 13:20-21 ESV)

Are we acknowledging Jesus as the “Great Shepherd” of our life? How strong is our desire to remain in HIS FLOCK? Are we recognizing the great sense of purpose He brings to life and the peace that can be found in the relationship and in fulfilling His Will? With all the things (and ideas) of this life competing for our attention, let us continue to be drawn to Jesus. May we also live in a manner that reveals how truly blessed we are in His care so that others will want to FLOCK to be in HIS FLOCK as well.

Have a great day AS A SHEEP IN HIS FLOCK!

That Name!

As we look at the Scriptures we notice many names referring to JESUS; each one descriptive of His essence and everything He represents. Like God Himself Who had many descriptive Hebrew names, it appears one name was also insufficient in capturing our Lord’s essence. Among those names we have “Alpha and Omega”, “Anointed One”, “Christ” “Emmanuel”, the “Good Shepherd”, “King of kings”, “Lord of lords”, “Messiah”, “Prince of Peace”, “Redeemer”, “Savior”, the “Way, the Truth, the Life”, “Wonderful Counselor” etc. However, it is perhaps the name JESUS, the name to be given Him at His birth (Luke 1:31), which reminds us most of the humanity He took on.

The name JESUS may strike us as a sweet name to hear. There seems to be something tender about it. Yet there is also something very powerful about the name JESUS. It was in the “NAME OF JESUS” that Peter commanded the lame beggar to rise up and walk. (Acts 3:6)

When questioned regarding the healing, Peter declared…
“And HIS NAME -- BY FAITH IN HIS NAME -- has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through JESUS has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.” (Acts 3:16 ESV)

Peter connected JESUS with conversion and forgiveness of sins as he spoke on the day of Pentecost.
“And Peter said to them, “Repent and BE BAPTIZED every one of you IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38 ESV)

Peter also emphatically declared…
“(11) This JESUS is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. (12) And there is salvation in no one else, for there is NO OTHER NAME under heaven given among men BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED.” (Acts 4:11-12 ESV)

Do these things come to mind when the name of JESUS is spoken? Do we recognize the power and blessing associated with His name? Do we also acknowledge the honor that name deserves?

Paul affirmed…
“(9) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the NAME THAT IS ABOVE EVERY NAME, (10) so that AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)

The manner in which we live and speak His name should convey a view of His exalted position in our life. May the name of JESUS retain the beauty, power, and promise that it should represent to us.

Have a great day LETTING JESUS REMAIN THE LORD OF YOUR LIFE!

Growing Up!

When we consider the experience of growing up it can be quite the experience. The stages of growth may not be passed through within the same timetable for all as some may grow up quicker than others. Nurturing and opportunity can have a lot to do with the rate at which growth takes place, but growth should be expected. When growth does not take place most often parents will seek the expertise of a doctor or psychologist in an attempt to figure out what is wrong. Is there always the same concern when there is a lack of spiritual growth?

Though Jesus was “Immanuel” which means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23), having entered this life’s scene in the form of a tiny baby there were some natural stages expected for Him to go through from infancy to adulthood. To focus on Jesus’ walk on earth can provide us with both a wonderful example of how one can live in this realm and be pleasing to God (1 Peter 2:21) and also help us realize we have a Savior Who understands full well the challenges we face in this life. (Hebrews 4:14-15) The Scriptures do not provide a lot of information regarding the childhood of Jesus, however Luke did record a concise description of that growth, the kind we would do well to follow in.

We read…
“And Jesus increased IN WISDOM and IN STATURE and IN FAVOR WITH GOD AND MAN.” (Luke 2:52 ESV)

Within this single verse we have mentioned the intellectual (wisdom), physical (stature), spiritual (favor with God), and social (favor with man) development in which we should all progress. It would certainly be nice if we could just take a pill or an injection, but that is not the way growth comes. God created us as beings who can learn and grow and has also provided the means in Christ for glorious transformation of our lives to take place as we yield to His Will. May we continue to focus on the example of Jesus as we strive toward further maturity in Christ. (Ephesians 4:13; Colossians 1:28)

Have a great day GROWING ONWARD AND UPWARD IN THE LORD!

A Glorious Thing!

The birth of a baby is a glorious thing. Though it was many years ago, I still cherish the memories of witnessing the birth of our three children. My wife did the work, but I did the gloating. Holding those precious little lives in my arms for the first time was an awesome experience. Holding our grandchildren as infants has been a thrill as well. To me babies are just extra special. I’m a real softy when it comes to them; a trait my father may have handed down to me. (I have many memories of my father holding other’s babies and also how his face would light up at the visit of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.) I love to hold babies whether they are sleeping or awake. To me, they are always a joy to gaze upon. I’m thankful this was the plan of God for bringing NEW LIFE into the world. He may have started Adam and Eve as adults, but every being after them has come onto life’s scene as an infant -- so innocent and sweet.

Though we don’t know the precise date for the coming of Jesus into this world, God’s plan was for His entrance onto life’s scene to be as an infant whose first bed was a manger. His coming was heralded as a glorious thing to shepherds watching their sheep. (Luke 2:8-14) After the shepherds found this NEW LIFE in a stable in Bethlehem they went away “glorifying and praising God” for the things they had witnessed. (Luke 2:15-20)

Though John’s gospel does not provide an account of the birth of Jesus, note how He was introduced.
“(1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (4) IN HIM WAS LIFE, AND THE LIFE WAS THE LIGHT OF MEN.” (John 1:1-4 ESV)

John eventually made it very clear He was referring to Jesus in those verses. (note John 1:14) Jesus came to life in this realm as an infant to provide us with the means and opportunity for NEWNESS of LIFE (Romans 6:4) now as a NEW CREATION (2 Corinthians 5:17) and for an even more glorious NEWNESS of immortal life to come. (read Philippians 3:21; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53)

The birth of Jesus was a glorious thing. Mary marveled at the things said about that NEW LIFE. (Luke 2:19 & 33) Jesus’ glory was retained in His being acknowledged as the Son of God. That glory was accentuated in the fulfillment of His ministry in giving Himself for us on the cross, triumphantly rising from the dead, and by His glorious return to Heaven. Since He is glorious, our NEW LIFE associated with Him will also be glorious. May we praise Him for all He was willing to go through on our behalf.

Have a great day FINDING GLORY AS A CHILD OF GOD!

Breaking News!

Whenever I hear the words “Breaking News!” while watching television, or see those words FLASH across the screen, I sit up ready to take notice. They are words which capture my attention. They are words which cause me to stop whatever else I am doing so that I can give the NEWS FLASH my undivided attention. Those words are an indicator that something worth reporting has taken place and it is even worth interrupting whatever other program may be on at the time.

When the time came for the Messiah to come onto this life’s scene, the story did not hit the headlines of the “Jerusalem Journal” though, perhaps, it should have. Nor did it make the front page of the “Bethlehem Bugle”. I’m not even sure it made it into the local “birth announcements” section. However, there was a great NEWS FLASH that took place and it may surprise us to think who was chosen to receive it. It was not the elite of the day. Nor was it the “religious” leaders of the time.

Luke recorded…
“(8) And in the same region there were SHEPHERDS OUT IN THE FIELD, keeping watch over their flock by night. (9) And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and THE GLORY OF THE LORD SHONE AROUND THEM, and they were filled with fear. (10) And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I BRING YOU GOOD NEWS OF A GREAT JOY that will be for all the people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (12) And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.’ (13) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, (14) ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!’” (Luke 2:8-14 ESV)

The attention of the shepherds was captured. They were startled at the sight. However, it was a GOOD NEWS FLASH! Here were shepherds chosen to receive the GOOD NEWS of the One who would be called the Good Shepherd. (John 10:11) How appropriate! But isn’t that true of whatever God chooses to do?

Today, the world would still do well to sit up and take notice! Jesus came into this world and He fulfilled His mission of making salvation possible through His sacrifice on the cross. He needs to be recognized by all as the Good Shepherd who will lovingly lead to an eternal resting place that is completely safe and secure.

Jesus came and is coming again. As His first coming was marked by a sight that captured the attention of those who witnessed it, His second coming will also be marked by that which will not be missed.

Jesus Himself stated…
“For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, SO WILL BE THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN.” (Matthew 24:27 ESV)

Like lightning FLASHING across the sky cannot be missed, so it shall be with the coming of the Lord. (note also 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8; 2 Peter 3:10) Every eye will see Him. (Revelation 1:7) Therefore the time is now to be prepared, because for those who are, His coming will again be marked as GOOD NEWS!

Have a great day HERALDING THE HOPE OF THE SAVIOR!

"One Good Turn...!"

It has been said that one good turn deserves another. The meaning of this statement is that when one is the recipient of a good deed it is generally natural to return the kindness or at least pass it on. Perhaps we can see how this worked in the life of Paul. He recognized how much he was undeserving of the gracious mercy of God. (1 Timothy 1:15-16) He knew the extent of his guilt with regard to his diligence in persecuting the church. (Acts 26:9-11) However, on the road to Damascus he saw the light and his life took a GLORIOUS TURN for the better. Paul by no means deserved the blessed opportunity he received, but it was the beginning of that which would prompt many other good turns.

As Paul stood before King Agrippa and recounted his conversion we read…
“(14) And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ (15) And I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. (16) But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, (17) delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles -- to whom I am sending you (18) to open their eyes, so THAT THEY MAY TURN FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT and FROM THE POWER OF SATAN TO GOD, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’” (Acts 26:14-18)

Paul was God’s chosen instrument to bring Gentiles to a GLORIOUS TURNING POINT in their life. As Paul had seen the light (both physically and spiritually) he was, in turn, to help others turn from the darkness of this world to the light of the truth of Christ and thus from the power of the devil to that of God. Having had the opportunity himself, Paul was compelled by a sense of indebtedness (Romans 1:14-15) to faithfully carry out that mission. Reading through the book of Acts and through the insight we gain from his letters, we can easily see how Paul exercised the same diligence and zeal in spreading the Gospel of Jesus as he had exerted beforehand in persecuting the church. That GLORIOUS TURNING POINT in Paul’s life brought about a GLORIOUS TURNING of the lives of many others.

Since we as Christians have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, turned from our old self, saved from our sins, and removed from condemnation (Romans 8:1), do we recognize it is our turn to pass on the opportunity? We didn’t deserve the salvation made possible by the grace and mercy of God, but since we have received it, don’t others deserve the opportunity? May we live in a manner that those around us can recognize a GLORIOUS TURNING POINT has been experienced in our life. Then let us continue to hold out the message of eternal hope in Christ that others may have their turn as well.

Have a great day LIVING TO TURN OTHERS TOWARD THE LORD!

Winter Has Arrived!

Yesterday was the first day of winter. For a couple of weeks now the weather has made it feel like winter had already come, but according to the calendar it has now “officially” begun. Though the weather may not follow the specific dates on the calendar, we still anticipate the fact that winter follows fall which follows summer which follows spring which follows winter. The cycle continues and we live each day prepared for whatever weather may come with the changing seasons.

Following the flood, when Noah offered a sacrifice to God, God said…
“WHILE THE EARTH REMAINS, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, SUMMER AND WINTER, DAY AND NIGHT, SHALL NOT CEASE.” (Genesis 8:22 ESV)

The fact winter has begun is a sign that for now God intends life here to go on. There is a time coming when the heavens and earth will be destroyed (2 Peter 3:7, 10-13), but with each sunrise and every change of the seasons that do come, God declares the opportunity to acknowledge Him and His Will more fully, serve His purposes, and live prepared for the glorious eternity that is to come. The continuation of the cycle He put into place (Psalm 74:16-17) is a glimpse of God’s great patience and the opportunity for fulfilling His desire for the salvation of lost souls. (2 Peter 3:8-9)

Yes, winter has arrived, but we have not. As long as we live let us continue to accept the time God has still granted to grow in our knowledge of His Will, be involved in His work, and press on toward our heavenly goal. May we trust in His power to sustain and bring us through all the seasons of life.

Have a great day EXPERIENCING GOD’S LOVE THOUGH ALL SEASONS!

The End Of Instruction!

God is the Creator of LIFE. (Genesis 1) Jesus was referred to by Peter as the “author of LIFE.” (Acts 3:15 ESV) Jesus came into this world so that we could live an abundant LIFE. (John 10:10) In Jesus has also been provided the means of eternal LIFE.(1 John 5:11 & 1 Timothy 1:16) Quite the focus on LIFE! It is what God and our Lord are all about and desire for us. They are for LIFE!

Is this truth continuing to be pressed upon our mind? Does each day we live in the light of God’s truth help us learn the depth of this desire God has for us? To be a disciple of Jesus is to be a learner. Are we remaining open to the instruction provided? Are we still striving to learn or do we feel we have learned enough?

Solomon urged…
“KEEP HOLD OF INSTRUCTION; do not let go; guard her, FOR SHE IS YOUR LIFE.” (Proverbs 4:13 ESV)

As disciples of Jesus, our instruction in the will of God does not end. As long as we have LIFE we need to continue learning and growing, understanding the ultimate end of our discipleship is eternal LIFE. We need to hold on to what we have learned as we continue to seek more knowledge of the Will of God. May we continue to have a heart and mind that remain instructable so as to lead to an indestructible LIFE!

Have a great day REMAINING A GOOD STUDENT OF THE WORD!

Good Diet!

’Tis the season for overeating. From Thanksgiving through Christmas it is easy to find ourselves faced with too many good meals and delightful treats difficult to resist. No wonder one of the most common New Years Resolutions is to commit to a good diet and more exercise in order to lose some weight!

One of the members of our congregation recently shared with me a conversation he had with his doctor. He had asked if it would be okay for him and his wife to go on a particular diet. After a statement of approval regarding the suggested diet, he then asked the doctor how to do it. The doctor’s simple response was, “Buy the book, read it, and do what it says.”

Should that not be our focus for a healthy spiritual life? Buy the book, (God’s Word, the Bible), read it daily, and put into practice what it says. Could it be any simpler than that?

Now, most of us probably already have one or more copies of God’s Word, so the first part is covered. The reading and doing are to then be the ongoing activities. God has provided “all things that pertain to LIFE AND GODLINESS, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.” (2 Peter 1:3) Nevertheless, in the same way it takes COMMITMENT AND EFFORT to remain on a good diet and exercise regimen, so it is with regard to our spiritual life. It doesn’t just happen by itself. We must commit the EFFORT AND TIME necessary for it to happen.

Peter exhorted…
“(5) For this very reason, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO SUPPLEMENT YOUR FAITH with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, (6) and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, (7) and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. (8) For IF THESE QUALITIES ARE YOURS AND ARE INCREASING, THEY KEEP YOU FROM BEING INEFFECTIVE OR UNFRUITFUL IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” (2 Peter 1:5-8 ESV)

EFFORT is necessary to gain knowledge and to allow that knowledge to be effective and fruitful in our life. If we learn much, but never put it into practice, what benefit is the knowledge? That knowledge will only stand in judgment against us if we fail to put it to use. (i.e. James 4:17)

Solomon encouraged…
“(7) Be not wise in your own eyes; FEAR THE LORD, and TURN away FROM EVIL. (8) It will be HEALING TO YOUR FLESH and REFRESHMENT TO YOUR BONES.” (Proverbs 3:7-8 ESV)

Let us continue to pick up God’s Book, read it, and COMMIT to doing what it says. This is the wise way to build up the life. (Matthew 7:24) Craving and longing for “the pure spiritual milk” (1 Peter 2:2) is the way to nourish our soul, enabling us to grow up in our salvation. May we remain COMMITTED to putting forth the daily EFFORT.

Have a great day LIVING BY GOD’S BOOK!

Words of a father!

Wisdom. We all need it. We also all need to PAY ATTENTION when directed toward it. We each have key individuals within our lives who have been instrumental in pointing us toward wisdom.

A recent new subscriber to “teEn-MAIL” wrote: “Thanks Carl for your ministry. My dad always says that you should wake up in the morning with praise, prayer and scripture. Your bible lessons will be perfect for my morning worship with me and the Lord. Please send me your emails.”

Here is someone who has PAID ATTENTION to some wisdom from their “dad”. This individual has a father who has obviously tried to help them realize the importance of beginning the day with a spiritual focus. As a father, Solomon also tried to direct toward PAYING ATTENTION to wisdom.

We read…
“(1) MY SON, DO NOT FORGET MY TEACHING, but let your heart keep my commandments, (2) FOR LENGTH OF DAYS AND YEARS OF LIFE AND PEACE THEY WILL ADD TO YOU. (3) Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. (4) So YOU WILL FIND FAVOR AND GOOD SUCCESS IN THE SIGHT OF GOD AND MAN.” (Proverbs 3:1-4 ESV)

How many times have individuals said, “I wish I’d listened to my parents.” There are periods in the life of youth when parental wisdom may not seem so wise, but usually the time comes when that wisdom is recognized. It is true that our earthly fathers (and mothers), no matter how godly they may be, are still imperfect beings. However, when they encourage toward true wisdom, for that we should always be grateful. When that wisdom is PAID ATTENTION to and followed, there are many ways in which we can acknowledge its impact on our days and years and the peace experienced in life.

“Praise, prayer and scripture.” Sounds like a wonderful way to begin each day. And as we PAY ATTENTION to what those Scriptures are saying, we may be amazed at how God will provide the opportunity to put the instruction into practice through the varying activities of the day. As we put that wisdom into practice, not only should we do so with an awareness of our living in the “sight of God”, but that we will also find others who are PAYING ATTENTION to the manner in which we live. Therefore, let us PAY ATTENTION to the wisdom on which our life should rest. Our Heavenly Father has provided His instruction with our best always in mind!

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE WISDOM OF THE FATHER!

In The Shadow!

Picture a child standing alone in a dimly lit area, when suddenly he sees his own shadow engulfed by a larger one. How quickly his imagination might picture the possibilities of what was approaching. Is it a bear? Is it the boogie man? Is it a giant ready to swoop him up? Quickly turning to face the creator of the fearful shadow, a sudden relief and calmness comes over him as he realizes the SHADOW IS THAT OF HIS FATHER.

Fear is often associated with that which may cast a large shadow. The shadow may reveal how close the object is or reveal its size. How huge a shadow can be made by a mountain! What a large shadow is cast by objects reaching to the sky!

The Psalmist wrote:
“(5) Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. (6) Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD. (7) How precious is your steadfast love, O God! THE CHILDREN OF MANKIND TAKE REFUGE IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WINGS.” (Psalm 36:5-7 ESV)

Oh, to consider the height of God's faithfulness and righteousness and then to experience the calmness and comfort to know we are living in His shadow. He is near. To know Him as OUR FATHER is to NOT BE IN FEAR OF HIS SHADOW, but to know the refuge it offers.

Have a great day LIVING CALMLY IN THE SHADOW OF THE HEAVENLY FATHER!

Is Good Good Enough?

There are a lot of good people in the world. They are helpful and kind to those around them. They are generous. They are honest. They are law abiding citizens. Such is good. It is how we should be. However, is that enough?

In Acts we read of a man who was described as being very good.
“(1) At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, (2) a devout man who FEARED GOD with all his household, GAVE ALMS GENEROUSLY to the people, and PRAYED CONTINUALLY to God.” (Acts 10:1-2 ESV)

Doesn’t that sound like the description of one who would be a good neighbor and an asset to any community? We know Cornelius believed in God because the text tells us he feared Him. We know he was worshipful because he prayed to God continually. This Gentile was also a philanthropist; giving generously to those who were in need. However, there was more he needed to recognize than his own goodness. In the midst of what appears to be his earnest seeking of God, it was revealed to Cornelius that an important element of his focus was missing.

As Peter later told of his encounter with Cornelius, we find that in spite of his goodness he was still unsaved. How do we know that? Because he related how he was told by the angel that Peter would declare to him a message by which he would be saved. (Acts 11:14) He was still in need of understanding the source of salvation.

Talking with Cornelius about JESUS, Peter stated…
“To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes IN HIM RECEIVES FORGIVENESS OF SINS THROUGH HIS NAME.” (Acts 10:43 ESV)

Cornelius and his household believed the message and then we read…
“And he [Peter] commanded them to be BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. Then they asked him to remain for some days.” (Acts 10:48 ESV)

Though Cornelius was a very good man, that was not good enough. Even though Cornelius believed in God, that was not sufficient. The missing link between Him and God was JESUS. Cornelius needed to come to know JESUS as the source of salvation and be baptized in the Name of JESUS to receive the forgiveness of his sins. This is still true today. (Acts 4:12; John 14:6; Mark 16:16)

We might wonder why the angel (Acts 10:3-6, 30-33; 11:13-14) did not tell Cornelius what he needed to do, but rather had him send for Peter. It appears that was and still is the commission God has given to His people. (Matthew 28:19-20) God has given us the message of salvation in JESUS CHRIST that is to be shared. JESUS CHRIST must be acknowledged as the significant link between us and God. JESUS CHRIST is the only mediator between man and God. (1 Timothy 2:5) There is no amount of goodness that can take the place of the means JESUS CHRIST has provided for the salvation of our soul. It is to Him we must all come and in Him we must all remain. May we never lose sight of this fact as we draw the attention of others to JESUS.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE GOOD WE RECEIVE BECAUSE OF JESUS!

Our Snapshot!

Many people look at pictures of themselves and declare, “That’s not me!” Perhaps the picture people complain about most is the one on their driver’s license. Sometimes those pictures look more like a criminal mug-shot than the PORTRAIT we would prefer. Nevertheless, how do others see us? What is the PICTURE we leave in their minds? When we are considered, what is the PORTRAIT that comes into focus?

Someone has said, “Reputation is your photograph; character is your face.” [source: “sentence sermons”]

When people see us and recognize our face, there is a PICTURE of some kind that will come into view. The words and actions of our life can leave a lasting impression in the mind of others. What is the PORTRAIT we are leaving with them?

Peter provided a brief “snapshot” of Jesus as he spoke to Cornelius and his household.
“how God anointed JESUS of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. HE WENT ABOUT DOING GOOD and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38 ESV)

That is perhaps the most concise commentary on the life of Jesus we have. The PORTRAIT of Jesus’ walk on earth was characterized by boldness, but also gentleness. It was also distinguished by gentleness, kindness, patience, and selfless love. At no time did Jesus ever display any deceitfulness. Jesus was Who He was, through and through. As we follow Him are we striving for our life to be lived in like manner?

Paul exhorted those at Philippi to…
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 2:5 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, “Your ATTITUDE should be the SAME THAT CHRIST JESUS HAD.”

Though Jesus was God in the flesh, He took on the form of a servant and humbled Himself to death on a cross (Philippians 2:6-8) in order to meet our greatest need. As we take note of the willingness of Jesus to focus on the needs of others (including ours), let our life also be characterized by the same devotion to the Will of God and a willingness to serve.

Paul went on to urge…
“(14) Do all things without grumbling or questioning, (15) THAT YOU MAY BE BLAMELESS AND INNOCENT, CHILDREN OF GOD WITHOUT BLEMISH in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you SHINE AS LIGHTS IN THE WORLD, (16) HOLDING FAST TO THE WORD OF LIFE, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.” (Phil. 2:14-16 ESV)

May the PICTURE of our life be what God desires it to be. In this way Christ will be seen and God will be glorified. We can have no better PORTRAIT than that. Let us surrender to the Will of God that our life may be a PICTURE He would hang in His gallery.

Have great day DEVELOPING THE CHARACTER OF CHRIST!

It Is What It Is!

I don’t recall where I originally came across the following quotation, but I had written it on a 3X5 card that has been in my Bible for a while. It is a quote from the French novelist Jacques Anatole Francois Thibault (1844-1924) who was also the recipient of the Nobel Prize in literature in 1921. He stated, “If a million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.”

The number of people agreeing on an idea does not make a bad one good. That which is wrong is still wrong regardless of how many people might say otherwise. Whatever is unwise remains unwise no matter how many people try to validate it. Foolishness and true wisdom will ultimately be seen for what they are.

Note some Paul referred to.
“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but THEY BECAME FUTILE IN THEIR THINKING, and their FOOLISH HEARTS WERE DARKENED.” (Romans 1:21 ESV)

There are many who continue in such a state today and for some reason seem to gain followers. Bad ideas appear to be just as catching as a virus and society gets sick in the process. Foolishness continues to be flaunted and followed by those who refuse to acknowledge there are absolutes in this life and what one believes does ultimately make a difference.

Writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul urged…
“Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, IN THE FUTILITY OF THEIR MINDS.” (Ephesians 4:17 ESV)

There is wisdom from above and wisdom that is earthly and they are not the same. (James 3:14-17) Following the ways of the world is futility. We need to be sure we are acknowledging and following true wisdom.

As we live in the midst of a diversity of so called “wisdom”, what should we do? First of all, rather than being foolish, we must continue to seek to understand what the WILL OF THE LORD is. (Ephesians 5:17) Then we must remain steadfast in LIVING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THAT WILL.

Peter exhorted…
“(15) For this is the will of God, that BY DOING GOOD YOU SHOULD PUT TO SILENCE THE IGNORANCE OF FOOLISH PEOPLE. (16) Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.” (1 Peter 2:15-16)

Let us continually be mindful that our conduct is in accordance with GOD’S WILL. Ultimately His wisdom is going to be seen. May we live so that others may acknowledge it sooner rather than later.

Have a great day EXHIBITING THE TRUE WISDOM FROM ABOVE!

True Generosity!

This time of year has been said to be the “Season of Giving.” Jesus was quoted by Paul as saying it’s “more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) I recently came across a statement which read, “When the heart is converted, the purse will be inverted.” This reminded me of the spirit of the Macedonians who were complimented by Paul for their WILLINGNESS to give. The Christians in the region of Macedonia were an impoverished people, but that did not dampen their spirit of generosity.

As Paul encouraged the generosity of the Corinthians, he wrote…
“(1) We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, (2) for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their EXTREME POVERTY have overflowed in a WEALTH OF GENEROSITY on their part. (3) For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their OWN FREE WILL, (4) begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints -- (5) and this, not as we expected, but THEY GAVE THEMSELVES FIRST TO THE LORD and then by the will of God to us.” (2 Corinthians 8:1-5)

These Christians had a heart that was fully converted. In view of having given themselves first to the Lord, they appear to have acknowledged they were merely stewards of their possession and desired to use them in service to the glory of God.

Some give out of their abundance while others give out of their poverty. (Mark 12:41-44) Jesus’ compliment of the poor widow’s giving seems to reveal the amount given has less to do with generosity than the spirit in which the giving is done. God has never expected us to give what we do not have. (2 Corinthians 8:12) And regardless of the amount it is the ready HEART that pleases Him. God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7) If we can’t give cheerfully, perhaps it is because we have not yet really given ourselves to the Lord. May we always bear in mind the place where our WILLINGNESS to give begins!

Have a great day ACQUIRING THE WEALTH OF GENEROSITY!

Spreading The Fire!

What makes us GLAD? Is it something which provides a GLADNESS that cannot be easily snuffed out? What does the true joy of our life rest upon?

In Psalms we read…
“(6) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; (7) you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS beyond your companions;” (Psalm 45:6-7 ESV)

According to the Hebrew writer this psalm referred to Jesus, the Son of God. (Hebrews 1:8-9) Isaiah referred to a time when mourning would be replaced with the “OIL OF GLADNESS” (Isaiah 61:3), a section of Isaiah which Jesus Himself associated with His having come into the world. (Luke 4:16-21) One of the characteristics of the early church was a spirit of GLADNESS (Acts 2:46) in their new found faith and the fellowship they enjoyed with one another. Their lives were on fire for Christ and the Good News of salvation in Him.

We see, then, how the “OIL OF GLADNESS” was associated both with Christ as well as with those who were to accept Him as the Messiah. This GLADNESS, accompanied by a steadfast faith, created a fire that burned deep within these believers. However, some were intent on putting that fire out! Now, if water is dumped on burning oil it can cause the oil to splatter and spread the fire rather than putting it out. When the persecution of the church began to intensify following the stoning of Stephen, that is exactly what became the result of the attempt to put out the fire of faith possessed by these first century Christians.

Luke recorded…
“(1) And Saul approved of his [Stephen’s] execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and THEY WERE ALL SCATTERED THROUGH THE REGIONS OF JUDEA AND SAMARIA, except the apostles. … (4) Now THOSE WHO WERE SCATTERED WENT ABOUT PREACHING THE WORD. … (8) So there was MUCH JOY in that city [Samaria (vs.5)].” (Acts 8:1, 4, & 8 ESV)

The attempt to stop the growth of the church actually helped to fulfill the spreading of the Gospel as Christ described it prior to His ascension. (Acts 1:8) Though their faith was tested, the fire could not be extinguished. The persecution only served to spread the Gospel of Jesus to wherever these Christians ended up going. The efforts to put out this growing fire of faith only caused it to “splatter” and ignite more fires in other regions.

When our faith is opposed it’s our opportunity to show the sincerity of it. If others see the genuineness there, they will be more likely to believe the testimony we share. May we resolve to not let anyone or anything put our fire out, recognizing how our steadfastness has the potential to ignite the faith of others. Focusing on the life we have in Christ, let us live a life filled with the “OIL OF GLADNESS”, as we continually fan the flame of faith!

Have a great day DISTINGUISHED BY AN INEXTINGUISHABLE FAITH AND JOY!

A Defining Love!

When it comes to love there may be many definitions for it. Love is a subject much talked about, but often misunderstood. Anytime love is associated with getting rather than giving, the focus is wrong. Our Lord is the greatest example of a giving love.

Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul listed many characteristics of godly love. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) If even just those 16 characteristics of love were practiced by all, what a different world this would be.

I recently came across a list of descriptions of love from the point of view of children. I had seen the list before, but on reading it again there was one statement which particularly grabbed my attention. It stated, “When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth.”

Knowing your NAME IS SAFE in the mouth of another! How does it make us feel to know when others speak our name it is not being done slanderously, but rather affectionately or kindly? Do we consider this when we speak the name of others? Can others feel the love when they hear us speak their name?

One of the pictures of the Good Shepherd is that of calling His sheep by name and leading them out. (John 10:3) The Lord knows those who are His. (John 10:27) Do we recognize His great love for us? Do we feel our NAME IS SAFE in His mouth?

What about when we speak His Name? Is our Lord’s NAME SAFE in our mouth?

Paul encouraged and exhorted…
“But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘THE LORD KNOWS THOSE WHO ARE HIS,’ and, ‘LET EVERYONE WHO NAMES THE NAME OF THE LORD DEPART FROM INIQUITY.’” (2 Timothy 2:19 ESV)

Some use the name of our Lord in a very flippant way. Do we use it adoringly? When others hear us say the name of Jesus, can they tell He is the love of our life? (note Matthew 10:37) As we express our love for Jesus, we should speak well of Him and live a life that in itself also speaks well of His Name and our association with it. May we constantly be aware of keeping our Lord’s NAME SAFE in our mouth.

Have a great day AFFECTIONATELY SPEAKING THE NAME OF CHRIST!

Letting Your Hair Down!

Letting your hair down! Those of you who have seen me know I don't have much hair to even consider letting down. But that’s not the way we use this expression anyway. It is true we need time to let down and relax. However, it is important to keep in mind things we should never let down on. Are we sometimes more polite toward those who are outside our family than with those within our own home? Do we put up with things from others and then take it out on those at home? Or do we strive to live right in the eyes of the world and give it no thought in our home? If we let down our hair “spiritually speaking” we let down our family, our Lord, and ourselves.

David wrote:
“I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I WILL WALK WITH INTEGRITY OF HEART WITHIN MY HOUSE;” (Psalm 101:2 ESV)

It is just as important to live according to righteousness in our home as it is outside our home. If there is an inconsistency there, could it be that we have merely put on a show for the world and our religion is not sincere? In our homes we have a place provided to practice and perfect (with the encouragement of our family) the way of living that can help impact this world for Christ.

Have a great day BEING THE LIGHT IN EVERY ROOM!

Want The Will!

The parents of a little girl listened fondly as their child prayed at the edge of her bed, “Dear God, please send down the lovely snow to keep the sweet little flowers warm through the winter.” Oh, how her parents glowed with pride as she jumped into bed. But as they were leaving their daughter’s room she said, with a mischievous smile, “I sure fooled Him that time. I really wanted the snow so I can play with my new sled.”

We know we don’t fool God! If we think we can, we have merely fooled ourselves. But what MOTIVATES our prayer requests? James referred to some who struggled with having the proper MOTIVATION in prayer.

“You ask and do not receive, because YOU ASK WRONGLY, TO SPEND IT ON YOUR PASSIONS.” (James 4:3 ESV)

I don't profess to have all the answers to all the questions relating to the answering of prayer. As I trust in God I know His wisdom far exceeds mine. I do know, however, that my prayers ought to be in faith and I also ought to give thought to my MOTIVATION in prayer and for what I am seeking. Perhaps the question we should ask is: “In prayer, am I seeking the Will of God or merely my own wants?”

It is true we express our desires in prayer, but we must still do that with a sincere desire for God to work His WILL, knowing He will do so according to His wisdom. May the seeking of God's WILL be the MOTIVATING factor for our life and our prayers.

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD’S WILL TO BE YOUR WANT!

Humility's Affect!

Pride has a way of limiting effectiveness in life. Sometimes it drives others away. Other times it affects one’s own ability to properly perceive self or the truth that can bring proper changes to life. Being too presumptuous about self puts one in a dangerous position. Such was the case with many of the Jewish leaders at the time of Christ and during the time John the Baptist was preparing the way for His ministry. These leaders were in need of humbling themselves in order to rightly see where they were and what they needed to become in order to bear the kind of FRUIT in their life God desired.

Note the rebuke of John the Baptist.
“(7) But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (8) BEAR FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE. (9) And DO NOT PRESUME TO SAY TO YOURSELVES, ‘WE HAVE ABRAHAM AS OUR FATHER,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. (10) Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. EVERY TREE therefore that does NOT BEAR GOOD FRUIT is CUT DOWN and THROWN INTO THE FIRE.’” (Matthew 3:7-10 ESV)

They presumed a right standing based on their ancestry to Abraham, but what was their relationship to God? In their pride they had too high an estimation of themselves and needed to humble themselves before God in order to be FRUITFUL in accordance with true righteousness.

Someone has said, “The branches that bear the most fruit hang the lowest.” [source: list of sentence sermons] These leaders, viewing themselves as lofty branches in their society, had their heads in the clouds when what they needed was to be grounded in a humble relationship with God. In their arrogance they stood in danger of being cut down by God.

Paul, writing to the church at Rome, exhorted.
“(20) When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. (21) But WHAT FRUIT WERE YOU GETTING AT THAT TIME from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. (22) But NOW that you have been SET FREE FROM SIN and HAVE BECOME SLAVES OF GOD, THE FRUIT YOU GET LEADS TO SANCTIFICATION AND its end, ETERNAL LIFE.” (Romans 6:20-22 ESV)

If we fail to properly humble ourselves before God we will miss the ultimate FRUIT He desires to be associated with our life. As we truly humble ourselves before Him, trusting in Him and accepting the guidance He provides, we will find the provision that will make us effective and FRUITFUL in the knowledge of our Lord. (2 Peter 1:8) May we continually maintain a proper humility toward God so that He will bring the FRUITFULNESS He desires.

Have a great day SUBMISSIVE TO SERVING GOD’S PURPOSES!

Dynamic Change!

Kind gestures are sometimes extended to people who are complete strangers. They are also extended to those who might be seen as undeserving. Such graciousness is wonderful to witness. In fact, are not such actions very God-like in nature?

Note what Paul mentioned in his letter to Titus.
“(3) For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.” (Titus 3:3 ESV)

That is definitely a picture of the absence of GOODNESS and KINDNESS. The life described by Paul was one expressed in terms of foolishness, rebellion, being off course, enslavement, and downright ugliness toward others. What more awful picture of an ungodly spirit could be drawn? Though mankind was created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) how much more unlike God could that picture be? Where is the benefit for anyone when such is the disposition?

Paul went on to encourage…
“(4) BUT WHEN THE GOODNESS AND LOVING KINDNESS OF GOD OUR SAVIOR APPEARED, (5) he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (6) whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, (7) so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (8) The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so THAT THOSE WHO HAVE BELIEVED IN GOD MAY be careful to DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO GOOD WORKS. These things are excellent and profitable for people.” (Titus 3:4-8 ESV)

Though the GOODNESS and LOVING KINDNESS of God has not been deserved, it has come anyway. God sent the Son into a very undeserving world and our salvation did not come because of “works done by us in righteousness”, but rather in accordance with God’s mercy. His GOODNESS and LOVING KINDNESS were extended with the desire for an appropriate response from us. Are we acknowledging the true blessing this is? If so, it should impact the way in which we are toward others.

When the GOODNESS and LOVING KINDNESS of God appeared through the sending of the Son to save, He also provided the means for transformation, making it possible to renew our character. Acknowledging God’s GOODNESS and LOVING KINDNESS in saving us, justifying us by His grace, and thus making us heirs of eternal life, should have a dynamic impact on our disposition. What should this cause us be devoted to? Paul urged Titus to insist on a devotion to “good works.” Good works should flow naturally from a genuine character of GOODNESS and LOVING KINDNESS. Exhibiting those godly characteristics in our life has the potential to also promote dynamic change in the lives of those around us. May the GOODNESS AND LOVING KINDNESS of God be evident in our actions.

Have a great day REVEALING THE EXCELLENCE AND PROFITABLENESS OF GODLINESS!

Taking The Gloves Off?

The expression “taking the gloves off” is generally a reference to taking the fight out of the ring, exposing the hard knuckles for a harder blow against a challenger. It is the act of getting down to serious personal fighting; skin against skin. However, yesterday the idea took on a much gentler and kinder meaning. As I was out on my long walk, I met an older gentleman whom I have met regularly on my walks, but had not seen for a while. Yesterday, rather than walking on past each other with our usual greetings, we stopped, our “gloves came off”, and we shook hands and talked about how things had been going and how good it was to see each other again. Certainly we could have shaken hands with gloved hands, but we both slipped “the gloves off” for a more personal connection. It was a simple act, yet it struck me as being very meaningful.

We connect with others on varying levels. Some of those CONNECTIONS may be just a smile, a wave, or a quick “good morning” as we pass. Even a passing cheerful disposition can make a difference for others whose paths we may cross. Then there are those we may meet that we just have to stop (even if it is only for a moment) to CONNECT more personally. Such may be the beginning or the continuation of a CONNECTION of which only God may know what it will ultimately become.

Jesus CONNECTED with people in various ways. His teaching and His miracles impacted lives in ways that were life changing. Our CONNECTION with Him today should still have a life changing affect. Jesus had power to speak the words and heal even at a distance. (i.e. Matthew 8:5-13) However, there was one situation where Jesus chose to touch, a CONNECTION I imagine was very meaningful to the leper who received it. (Matthew 8:2-3)

Different countries have different manners in which others are greeted. A handshake is a common greeting, creating a physical CONNECTION. Some handshakes are very firm while others may be gentle. That we would take the time to CONNECT with another acknowledges a sense of value. The power of such should not be underestimated. However, there are CONNECTIONS which we ought to recognize as going very deep because of what is shared.

Paul, writing to the church at Galatia commented about a reception he had received.
“and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, THEY GAVE THE RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP TO BARNABAS AND ME, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.” (Galatians 2:9 ESV)

This reference is not to merely a handshake. There was a sharing in the labors of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus. The extension of the “right hand of fellowship” was a validation or endorsement of the focus of the labors of the Apostles in Jerusalem to the circumcised and Paul’s work of reaching out to the uncircumcised. There was no competition between them as they were proclaiming the same Gospel to their respective audiences.

There is no greater CONNECTION we can have than that of agreeing together in carrying out the work of the Lord in accordance with His Will. If there is competition, it is with the devil who is also attempting to claim souls for himself. CONNECTING with each other in the truth of God and with others with the message of salvation in Christ should be the personal desire of us all. May the “gloves come off” that we may touch others for their benefit and the glory of God.

Have a great day PERSONALLY CONNECTING WITH OTHERS FOR GODLY PURPOSES!

Two Sides To The Door!

Life provides opportunities to do a variety of things. Though these opportunities may vary in significance, they ought to be recognized and given consideration. Someone has said, “If God writes ‘Opportunity’ on one side of open doors, He writes ‘Responsibility’ on the other.” [source: sentence sermons]

What an awesome privilege the disciples had to be able to walk and talk with Jesus. Through the varying encounters, Jesus was training them for the work He would leave them to do. The disciples were expected to be RESPONSIBLE with what they had learned and the calling they had received.

As Jesus was honest regarding challenges that lay ahead, He said…
“(12) But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. (13) THIS WILL BE YOUR OPPORTUNITY to bear witness.” (Luke 21:12-13 ESV)

We don’t have to read too far into the book of Acts to see these who were at one time very timid, being very bold. They recognized the open doors, seized the opportunities, and accept the RESPONSIBILITY the Lord had laid on them. They had a message of hope to share, a mission to carry out, and they would not be stopped! (Acts 5:41-42)

When we find ourselves challenged in life and going through difficult times, perhaps our perspective would be better if we began by looking for the opportunity the occasion might present. As we step through the door of opportunity, if we look back, may it be to recognize the RESPONSIBILITY that is ours as servants of Jesus. What is it that we have been brought to that moment to carry out? Perhaps it is the opportunity for the world to see the genuineness of our love. Maybe it is the opportunity for others to see a faith that remains steadfast. It could be the opportunity for those around us to see that we believe the truth enough to not be moved from it no matter what others might say or think. Perhaps it is the opportunity to speak words of truth that have the power to either convict or encourage. In all of this others can take note that Jesus has made a tremendous difference in our life.

We have a RESPONSIBILITY to live up to what we know. As we go through our daily life we may be the person for the moment who needs to act. May we enter into the opportunities before us with that in mind.

Have a great day ACTING ACCOUNTABLY TOWARD OPPORTUNITIES!

Don't Be Fueled!

There was an old philosopher of Greece who one day found himself receiving a very severe tongue lashing from his wife. When he continued to listen in silence it caused his wife to become even more infuriated. Finally, she picked up a bucket of cold water and threw it at him, leaving him completely drenched from head to foot. While the water was still dripping from him, he very calmly said, “After that thunder and lightning I rather expected a shower.”

Some situations in this life truly challenge our desire to remain calm. It has been pointed out that you can measure the size of an individual by what it takes to get to them. There is a lot of truth in that statement. When we are pushed to the limit, how well does our character stand up? If we choose to fight fire with fire we simply help in building a bigger fire.

Solomon warned…
“As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, SO IS A QUARRELSOME MAN FOR KINDLING STRIFE.” (Proverbs 26:21 ESV)

Solomon advised…
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1 ESV)

Don’t allow the actions of others to “fuel” our responses. Let our responses be prompted by the character God is striving to instill within us.

Have a great day RESPONDING IN THE LOVE OF GOD!

Give 'Em What They Want?

A department store manager overheard one of his clerks say to a customer, “No, we have not had any for a long time.”
Quickly, the manager rushed up and assured the customer, “But we’ll get it for you right away. We’ll send out and get some.”
Then, drawing his sales-clerk to the side he quietly ordered, “Don't you ever tell a customer we are out of something. Tell them we will get it right away!”
“But,” the clerk protested, “we were talking about rain.”

A philosophy of many businesses is: “Give the customer what they want!” In fact, some businesses have even been established by looking at what people wanted and then opened up to provide that very thing. Now, this may make wonderful business sense, but the tragedy is it has come into the realm of religion too.

In I Samuel 8 we read where the people wanted a king to lead them like it was with all the nations around them. (I Samuel 8:5). God had Samuel warn them of the problems they would have under a king (rather than just following God as their King), but the people would not be dissuaded from their desire. (I Samuel 8:6-21) They got a king so they would be like the other nations and sure enough, they struggled as most of the kings were not good godly leaders. [If you happen to have a Halley's Bible Handbook, just take a look at his chart of the kings and see how few good kings there were compared to the bad ones.] Due to the stubborn desire of the people it appears getting a king was the only way they would learn.

What’s the good news? The good news for us, if we keep our faith properly directed, is that God has not promised, nor set out, to provide our every want. He knows many of those wants are not good for us or may not be handled properly. However, He has promised and set out to provide for our every need! God has attempted to get us to realize this through many passages of Scripture, but note what He conveyed through the Apostle Peter:

“(3) His divine power has granted to us ALL THINGS THAT PERTAIN TO LIFE AND GODLINESS, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (4) by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

Let us continue to look to God in faith, knowing He will provide what we need. He knows best what we need and how to provide for those needs.

Have a great day GETTING WHAT YOU NEED!

The Messiah!

The timing of events can be affected by many factors in this life. Due to unforeseen circumstances, happenings may be either canceled or postponed. When something is canceled that means it will not happen. However, if something is postponed, we can look for it to take place at a later date. This past Thursday afternoon I received a call from the director of our area community chorus to let me know that evening’s PLANNED performance of George Frideric Handle’s “Messiah” (1742) had been postponed due to weather. The performance would be rescheduled for some time in January, though this coming Sunday afternoon’s performance would still go on as scheduled. (My part in this concert is that of playing in the small orchestra which will accompany the 90 some member chorus from our community and the surrounding area.) It has often been said, “The show must go on.” Nevertheless, that is not always the case. Cancellations and postponements do take place.

With all the PLANNING and rehearsing it would have been a shame to completely cancel the “Messiah.” It was still unfortunate to have to delay one of the performances. However, the realities associated with God’s PLANNING of the “Messiah” have never been and never will be hampered by weather or anything else. Though some may interpret time passing as a postponing by God, all things related to His PLANNING have been and will be carried out according to His timetable.

Paul noted with respect to the initial coming of the “Messiah”…
"(4) But WHEN THE FULLNESS OF TIME HAD COME, GOD SENT FORTH HIS SON, born of woman, born under the law, (5) to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” (Galatians 4:4-5 ESV)

With regard to securing our salvation, Paul stated…
“For while we were still weak, AT THE RIGHT TIME CHRIST DIED for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:6 ESV)

And as Paul stood before an audience in Athens, He declared…
“(30) The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, (31) because HE HAS FIXED A DAY ON WHICH HE WILL JUDGE THE WORLD in righteousness BY a man WHOM he has APPOINTED; and of this HE HAS GIVEN ASSURANCE to all BY RAISING HIM FROM THE DEAD.” (Acts 17:30-31 ESV)

Even in this last reference it is clear Paul was, again, referring to Jesus, the “Messiah.” What God has PLANNED will go on! It will take place! At the time He has scheduled it, it will happen! Let us be encouraged and prepared!

Growing Like A ...!

This world is full of a variety of plants. Perhaps we wonder about the purpose of some them, especially the weeds. Blame Adam. (Genesis 3:18) Sometimes a child is noted as “growing like a weed.” Weeds do grow quickly, but hopefully the weed (growing wild and unattended) is not descriptive of the character of the child. Though Micah would prophesy regarding the salvation of God that was to come, he noted a sad condition among the people at the time.

We read…
“The best of them is LIKE A BRIER, the most upright of them A THORN HEDGE. The day of your watchmen, of your punishment, has come; now their confusion is at hand.” (Micah 7:4 ESV)

Did you note this was not a description of the worst of them, but of the best? What a sad commentary on the overall character of a people. It is not a picture of FRUITFULNESS, but one of overgrown desolation. Such is the picture of a life when God and His Will are ignored. What kind of plant depicts our life?

Let us bear in mind the picture Jesus encouraged toward.
“(4) Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch CANNOT BEAR FRUIT BY ITSELF, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (5) I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever ABIDES IN ME AND I IN HIM, HE IT IS THAT BEARS MUCH FRUIT, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5 ESV)

When we remain properly connected to Jesus, the “true vine” (John 15:1), the picture of the life is not one of desolation, but rather one of much FRUITFULNESS. It is our connection to Him that makes this possible as we continue receiving the life giving nourishment that flows from the “true vine” into our life. Let us remain open to the pruning of the “vinedresser” (John 15:1-2) so that more FRUIT will continue to be produced to His glory.

Have a great day LIVING A GOD TENDED LIFE!

Precious To Precious!

Many different things are held precious by various individuals in this world. However, much of that which is considered precious will not last. A great deal of it is only related to life in this realm and some of it is even difficult to keep secure here. Some try to hang on to treasures they think will retain their value or increase in it. Items of gold or other precious metals are locked away for safekeeping. It should be remembered that Jesus mentioned how the treasures of earth can be destroyed by moth and rust and can be stolen by thieves. (Matthew 6:19) What is precious to us that will truly continue to retain or increase its value?

Peter (quoting from Isaiah 40:8) declared that “the word of the Lord remains forever.” (1 Peter 1:25) Are we acknowledging its longevity and truly appreciating its preciousness?

Regarding the commands of God, the psalmist David declared...
“MORE TO BE DESIRED ARE THEY THAN GOLD, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” (Psalm 19:10 ESV)

The Hebrew translated “desired” is a word which refers to “desirableness” or “preciousness” and the NIV translation uses the phrase “MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD.” With our life focused on the abiding Word of God we can be enabled to develop that which is also MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD. God’s Word which is MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD will bring to our individual lives a quality that is of the same preciousness.

Peter encouraged…
“(6) In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, as was necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, (7) so that the tested genuineness of YOUR FAITH -- MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (8) Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, (9) obtaining the OUTCOME OF YOUR FAITH, the SALVATION OF YOUR SOULS.” (1 Peter 1:6-9 ESV)

God’s Word; that which is MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD. Genuine faith; a possession MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD and more durable as well. A glorious outcome; the salvation of our soul (the precious eternal abiding aspect of our life). Do we have the priorities right? Are we focusing on that which is truly MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD or any of the other “glitter” the world dangles before our eyes? May we keep our focus on God’s precious Word so as to continue developing a precious sustaining faith that will keep us on track with the eternal goal.

Have a great day KNOWING THE SAVING THAT IS SECURE!
