For Me?
Birthdays! Weddings! Anniversaries! Christmas! Other special occasions! Or just because! What is something each of these have in common? Gifts! Sometimes when a gift is received it is gratefully accepted with the expression, “For me?”; words which may express both delight and surprise. However, are all gifts just “for me”? Are they all simply to be for personal benefit?
A number of years ago we decided to give our youngest son (in high school at the time) a gift (two tickets to a concert by “Jars Of Clay”) we thought he would enjoy for his birthday. Two tickets would allow him to invite a friend so he would not have to go alone. His choice, however, was for us (his parents) to go with him because he thought it was something we would also enjoy. Though we continued to ask if there wasn’t some friend he would rather take than his parents, our son made it clear he wanted us to go. The gift was for him, but he wanted to SHARE IT with us. We therefore ended up giving him three tickets for his birthday.
A willingness to SHARE a gift! In recent years I have heard on more than one occasion of a young child celebrating a birthday, but requesting donations be collected for some worthy cause rather than receiving presents. Perhaps such a desire naturally springs up from a recognition of being blessed and the importance of considering the needs (or desires) of others.
The church at Corinth, though blessed with many spiritual gifts, struggled in maintaining a proper focus on their usefulness for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:7) Paul, reminding these Christians that being members of one body (the body of Christ, 1 Corinthians 12:27) there was to be a focus on mutual benefit.
Paul exhorted the church at Rome in a similar way when he wrote…
“(4) For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, (5) so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. (6) Having GIFTS THAT DIFFER according to the grace given to us, let us USE THEM: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; (7) if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; (8) the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Romans 12:4-8 ESV)
In what ever ways we may be gifted (abilities, talents, etc.) we are not to be boastful about it or keep it all to ourselves. Instead we are to consider the ways in which such can be SHARED for the benefit of others. Peter also urged those to whom he wrote that as each had received a gift they were to “use it to serve one another.” (1 Peter 4:10)
There is joy in receiving, but also in SHARING. SHARING in the lives of others (teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, etc.) in accordance with our maturing of faith in Christ increases the magnitude of that joy. Let us thank God for the abilities in which He helps us increase, being joyful that they are “for me”, but also with a focus of how that can be used “for us”. Any season is the season for giving and sharing in the lives of others.
Have a great day JOYFULLY SHARING WHAT WE HAVE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED!

Strong Argument!
Many Scriptures can be pointed to as proof of what God expects. Nevertheless there are lots of people who refuse to accept verbal claims. Jesus pointed many to God’s intent in the principles of the Law and yet there were those who would not accept His teaching. However, when it came to the manner in which He walked on this earth, that power was hard to deny. It was difficult to argue with the CONSISTENCY BETWEEN WHAT JESUS TAUGHT AND WHAT HE DID. Many of the Jewish leaders who tried to trap Jesus with their questions had great difficulty trying to explain away the works He performed. Our Lord’s actions spoke powerfully as to Who He was and His link to the Heavenly Father.
Someone has said, “The strongest argument that can be offered a skeptic is a godly life.” [source: list of sentence sermons]
Perhaps there are some who do not believe because they see those who call themselves “Christians” living as if they did not believe. As we walk in the steps of our Lord, our life should also be lived in powerful testimony to the One in Whom we believe and for Whom we are to live (note Romans 14:8) our life.
Peter exhorted…
“(11) Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. (12) KEEP YOUR CONDUCT AMONG THE GENTILES HONORABLE, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may SEE YOUR GOOD DEEDS AND GLORIFY GOD on the day of visitation.” (1 Peter 2:11-12 ESV)
First noting Peter’s negative warning and then his positive affirmation regarding MANNER OF LIVING reveals our choice of CONDUCT in life has the potential for impacting more than merely ourselves, but also those who observe our actions. While we live our life under the critical and even judgmental and slanderous eye of the world, consistent GODLY LIVING will make our proper actions difficult to be honestly argued with. Our aim should be for our DAILY ACTIONS to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) to the end that God will be glorified.
To the church at Thessalonica, Paul noted his prayer on their behalf.
“(11) To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and MAY FULFILL EVERY RESOLVE FOR GOOD and every work of faith BY HIS POWER, (12) so THAT THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS MAY BE GLORIFIED IN YOU, AND YOU IN HIM, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 ESV)
Though we ought to always be prepared to give an answer (or defense) for the hope that we have (1 Peter 3:15), there are situations when the most powerful and best answer will be the GODLINESS of our life. In the process our Lord will ultimately be glorified and He will be glorified in us. May we be mindful of living to make it so.
Have a great day LIVING LIKE A TRUE BELIEVER!

He Is Painfully Aware!
God is a God of everlasting love. (Psalm 103:17) However, that love is also toward RIGHTEOUSNESS. God expects mankind to pay attention to Him and what He has revealed. As the author of life, God has provided the guidelines for living it best. Those who have His judgment to fear are those who do not have a reverential fear for God’s authority behind the Will He has revealed.
David noted…
“God is A RIGHTEOUS JUDGE, and a God WHO FEELS INDIGNATION EVERY DAY.” (Psalm 7:11 ESV)
God has revealed Himself in ways that leave mankind without excuse (note Romans 1:18-20) for not acknowledging Him. As a “RIGHTEOUS Judge” He has every right to feel indignation or anger toward the wicked (as some translations express it) every day as His Will is ignored and rejected. God is grieved when His Way is departed from. (i.e. Genesis 6:6) As we follow His Will we can find some comfort in knowing He is well aware of what others are doing and He will ultimately deal with it all. Our aim should be to continue allowing God’s Wisdom to be evident in the manner in which we live regardless of what others around us may be doing.
Mankind makes judgment about all kinds of things. That includes us. Let us continue to abide in God’s love (note John 15:10 & 1 John 4:16) as we look to Him for the guidance that will aid us in making a “RIGHT judgment” (John 7:24) regarding the things of this life. God will be aware of our following in His Way.
Have a great day ALLOWING GOD’S WILL TO OUR DAILY GUIDE!

"Technicalities" Or "Right"?
Technicalities or what’s right? Which of these is of most concern to us? Are we ever disturbed when we read of someone being guilty of some heinous crime, but having the case thrown out by a court because of a “technicality”?
I guess it is “technicalities” that keep so many lawyers employed. However, does it almost appear the quest becomes one for “technicalities” rather than for “right”?
“Look for the gray! Forget the black and white!
Look for the loophole! Forget about wrong and right!” (CWH)
Things are not as “gray” in God’s eyes as some would like to believe or live. It is dangerous if we decide to walk in the gray instead of the right. Why walk in the gray when we can walk in the “LIGHT.”
John wrote:
“(6) If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. (7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:6-7 ESV)
To count on “technicalities” is not safe. They may work in this realm, but God sees through all the smoke and mirrors of words and angles and looks into the heart. Jesus is our advocate before the Father. He’s there for our defense. However, we deceive ourselves and cheapen His grace if we think that leaves us room to play the games of the world’s courts.
Micah, the prophet, exhorted…
“HE HAS TOLD YOU, O man, WHAT IS GOOD; and what does the Lord require of you but to DO JUSTICE, and to LOVE KINDNESS, and to WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD?” (Micah 6:8 ESV)
May our refrain be:
“Look for the right! Stay from the gray!
Walk in His Light. It’s the only safe Way!” (CWH)
Have a great day WALKING IN THE LIGHT!

Controversy!
Some people try to stay away from controversy. We may not like controversy, but as long as we recognize a distinction between right and wrong (which must be done for the sake of righteousness and to be pleasing to God) there will be conflict with those who are unwilling to accept God’s Will. As we hold to the authority of God, remember that those who reject His Standards ultimately have their controversy with Him.
Note the charge during the time of the prophet Hosea.
“(1) Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel, for THE LORD HAS A CONTROVERSY WITH THE INHABITANTS OF THE LAND. There is NO FAITHFULNESS OR STEADFAST LOVE, and NO KNOWLEDGE OF GOD in the land; (2) THERE IS SWEARING, LYING, MURDER, STEALING, and COMMITTING ADULTERY; they BREAK ALL BOUNDS, and BLOODSHED FOLLOWS BLOODSHED.” (Hosea 4:1-2 ESV)
Does that sound like the kind of stuff going on in our own country? It appears to be what we can always expect to take place wherever the “KNOWLEDGE OF GOD” is being rejected! Boundaries continue to be pushed and re-established only to be pushed to the limit again. Lack of respect for the lives of others continues to abound.
There are many “controversial” issues in society today on which we may find ourselves on diverse sides. However, it is where we stand in relation to God’s Will which must be given priority. As long as we live we will face controversy with others over desires, opinions, and life values, but may that controversy not be God’s with us. The courts of our land may make definitive decisions on controversial issues, but it is God’s legal charge that matters most.
When Peter and John were told to stop proclaiming the truth of Jesus (Acts 4:17-18) their response was as follows:
“(19) But Peter and John answered them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, (20) for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.’” (Acts 4:19-20 ESV)
Let the world judge if they will, but let us share the resolve of Peter and John to continue listening to God. Our persistent quest needs to be for gaining the KNOWLEDGE OF GOD and living in accordance with that KNOWLEDGE. It is ultimately His judgment that counts. May our controversy not be with Him.
Have a great day ENJOYING OUR PEACE WITH GOD!

Continuing Thanks!
Yesterday across our country there were many families and friends gathering and focusing together on all the many things for which thanks can be given. Among that for which we ought to give thanks are the special relationships we are able to develop in this life and how personally meaningful they become. Hopefully we each have family and friends who hold a special place in our lives. Those who share a kindred spirit of faith ought to be special to us as well. There is a very special sense of family within the congregation I have had the privilege of working with for the last twenty-one years and I am always encouraged by the manner in which they receive GOD’S WORD. In my teaching and preaching I must always be mindful that I am merely a messenger and the message must remain God’s. HIS WORD must take precedence above all.
Paul faced many challenges during his years of ministry, however, his letters reveal he was a very thankful person. His letters contain many expressions of thanks to God for His rich blessings of grace and mercy and also for those individuals who were co-laborers and a source of great encouragement to Paul. He appreciated the relationships he had developed with believers in various places and was always encouraged by the growth and steadfastness he observed (or heard) taking place in their lives.
Note one of Paul’s expressions of thanks to the church at Thessalonica.
“And we also THANK GOD CONSTANTLY for this, that WHEN YOU RECEIVED THE WORD OF GOD, which you heard from us, YOU ACCEPTED IT not as the word of men but AS WHAT IT REALLY IS, THE WORD OF GOD, WHICH IS AT WORK IN YOU BELIEVERS.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV)
I am personally thankful for each one who continues to have an interest in the daily “teEn-MAIL” focuses and those who have continued to share them with others. My hope is always that your GREATEST INTEREST is to go even deeper into GOD’S WORD with a willingness to accept it as it is. May we always allow GOD’S WORD to be the last word on every subject. Regardless of what the world or others may choose to do, for us to sincerely seek to accept God’s Standard and Will as it is, we cannot go wrong. Let us allow GOD’S WORD to continually fulfill the purpose for which He has sent it. (Isaiah 55:11) In so doing we will continue to be blessed!
Have a great day ALLOWING GOD’S WORD TO CONSTANTLY BE AT WORK IN OUR LIFE!

He Most Certainly Is!
I don’t know it’s origin. I don’t even know how far back it may date. However, I can remember the following words from childhood days being used to teach the daily practice of prayer. “God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen.” Perhaps we would call this a rather simplistic prayer, but to acknowledge God as He is addressed in those words and to be thankful to Him for His daily provision is actually deeply profound. Who can adequately describe the true GREATNESS OF GOD? Who can list all the expressions of HIS GOODNESS.
The last verse of Psalm 100 states…
“For THE LORD IS GOOD; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100:5 ESV)
Yes, God is most certainly GOOD. What He created was GOOD. (i.e. Genesis 1:4,10,etc) What He provides is GOOD. What else should be expected from the One Who is truly GOOD?
James declared…
“EVERY GOOD GIFT AND EVERY PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ABOVE, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17 ESV)
Since GOD IS GOOD, how could what He has done, is doing, or will do be anything but GOOD? Due of GOD’S essence of GOODNESS we can expect GOODNESS because He does not change. As the Psalmist expressed, His “steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” Therefore, as we acknowledge GOD’S GREATNESS and GOODNESS, let us continually thank Him for the food He provides, His steadfast love, His continuing faithfulness, and every other gracious gift He showers upon us.
Let us continually echo the words of the Psalmist…
“(28) YOU ARE MY GOD, and I WILL GIVE THANKS TO YOU; YOU ARE MY GOD; I will extol you. (29) OH GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD; for his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 118:28-29 ESV)
Have a great day THANKING THE GOD WHO IS!

In His Presence!
God’s people did not always enjoy the idea of being in His presence. (i.e. Exodus 19:16) However, God, in His desire to be INTIMATELY KNOWN by His people, His presence in their midst was symbolized by the tabernacle and then by the temple in Jerusalem. That closeness with God’s people today is now represented by God’s dwelling with us by His Spirit. (1 Corinthians 3:16;1 John 4:13)
Continuing in our look at Psalm 100, we read…
“ENTER HIS GATES with thanksgiving, AND HIS COURTS with praise! GIVE THANKS TO HIM; BLESS HIS NAME!” (Psalm 100:4 ESV)
For the Jews, a means was provided to approach God to offer their sacrifices of thanksgiving and praise. They were to enter the gates and on into the courts, drawing near to the temple where God’s presence was symbolized in their midst. Through the priests the sacrifices were offered and thanks was to be given to God and His Name was to be exalted and blessed.
There is a picture of INTIMACY here. It is seen in the drawing near to God and in blessing His Name. God was to be KNOWN and acknowledged by Name. His Name could only be blessed if He was INTIMATELY KNOWN.
Because of Jesus, our great High Priest, we can have great confidence in approaching God’s throne of grace. (Hebrews 4:14-16) As we worship, we come into God’s presence and to KNOW HIM is to do so with thanksgiving. We should seek to maintain such a relationship with God that we rejoice to be in His presence. We can also give thanks for the extent the way has been opened up for us.
The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(19) Therefore, brothers, since we have CONFIDENCE TO ENTER THE HOLY PLACES by the blood of Jesus, (20) by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, (21) and since we have a great priest over the house of God, (22) LET US DRAW NEAR WITH A TRUE HEART IN FULL ASSURANCE OF FAITH, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:19-22 ESV)
Since the way has been opened through the blood of Jesus, let us continually draw near to God with confidence, giving thanks to Him and blessing His Name for providing a means of entrance into His glorious presence. May the manner in which we live our daily lives also reveal how INTIMATELY we know God and how thankful we are to live in nearness to Him.
Have a great day KNOWING THE NEARNESS OF GOD!

Sense Of Belonging!
Among the things for which we may give thanks is family. Good relationships are a real blessing in life. How sad it is for those who do not have a sense of belonging; who feel forgotten and maybe unloved. In this country the celebration of “Thanksgiving” provides the opportunity for many family gatherings where is found the enjoyment of good company, good food, and the sharing of loving remembrances. Not just this time of year, but always it is important for us to let others know they are significant. Family and friendships should not be taken for granted. Do those we are connected with know we have an APPRECIATION for the relationship?
In our offering of thanks for relationships, let us not forget this one!
“Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and WE ARE HIS; we are HIS PEOPLE, and THE SHEEP OF HIS PASTURE.” (Psalm 100:3 ESV)
How many times did the nation of Israel forget to Whom they belonged? How many times did they have to lose the relationship to begin to APPRECIATE it again. At the time of Hosea, God declared He would withhold His blessings because the people did not acknowledge they had come from Him. (Hosea 2:8-9) Do we forget? Do we live with a constant awareness that He is the Giver of life and all things? (Acts 17:25)
How thankful are we for the relationship God desires to have with us will not only be expressed by our words, but by the manner in which we live our life as well. Is He truly our God? Do we APPRECIATE being cared for in His flock? Are we encouraged and motivated to press on in faith and righteous living by such a sense of belonging? Can there be a Psalm (or a song) of thanks on our heart without thinking of God and how everything about life relates to that relationship? Recognizing the meaningfulness of our relationship with God will help bring meaningfulness to our other relationships as well. To APPRECIATE life we must rightfully APPRECIATE all that relates to our relationship with God. May a daily life of thanksgiving reveal it is to Him we truly belong.
Have a great day EXPERIENCING WHAT TRUE BELONGING IS ALL ABOUT!

Making Noise!
We are surrounded by all kinds of noise today. There is even concern with regard to what has been called “noise pollution.” Many communities have noise ordinances. Some people wear ear protection when working around loud engines or machines. There is music loved by some that is considered noise by others. When issues arise that some people want to draw attention to they make noise about it. (Remember the proverbial “squeaky wheel gets the grease”.) Perhaps there is no getting around some of the noise that goes on in this world. However, we can choose what kind of noise we can become known for making. For what kind of noise should we desire to be noted?
The psalmist suggested…
“(1) MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE TO THE LORD, all the earth! SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS! Come INTO HIS PRESENCE WITH SINGING!” (Psalm 100:1-2 ESV)
It is what God hears in our life which ought to be of the greatest concern to us. Does He hear a JOYFUL noise ringing out from our life? What could generate such? Perhaps we would acknowledge our singing of heartfelt praise and thanksgiving could be the JOYFUL sound heard by our God. Is our praise restrained or does it naturally well up JOYFULLY from within us as we reflect on how blessed we are by God?
Could the JOYFUL noise be the sound of humble and willing service as well? Is our service to the glory of God done grudgingly or with a sincere song on our heart and praise on our lips for the opportunities to share? Is there a gladness evident in the manner in which we go about daily life? Is there something about us that can be seen as different because we are constantly mindful of the One Who gives us every reason for JOY for not only this life, but also for an eternity?
To recognize God as the Giver and Sustainer of life is what all throughout the earth need to learn to acknowledge. Perhaps our own JOYFULNESS as we go through life can help draw the attention of those around us to that truth. If we are going to make some noise, may it be a JOYFUL sound that rings even in the ears of God.
Have a great day BEING HEARD IN GLORIOUS WAYS!

Alliance & Reliance! (3 of 3)
When an alliance is formed it will be made evident through properly focusing on the SOVEREIGN POWER. Who (or what) is the SOVEREIGN POWER in our life? Self? Our possessions? Our nation’s government? The world’s applause? Or is God and His Will the supreme rule for our daily life? If we acknowledge God as our life’s SOVEREIGN POWER, how do we demonstrate our alliance with and our reliance upon Him?
Note the focus urged by Solomon.
“(5)TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, and do NOT LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. (6) In ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, and he will make straight your paths. (7) Be NOT WISE IN YOUR OWN EYES; FEAR THE LORD, and TURN AWAY FROM EVIL. (8) It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.” (Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV)
Did you note six ways in which alliance with God and reliance upon Him ought to be demonstrated in our life? Let us personally consider the following questions regarding these six things.
[1] Does our life display a wholehearted trust in God? “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
[2] Are we leaning and supporting our life on His wisdom rather than depending on our own understanding? “Do not lean on your own understanding.”
[3] In all that we do and say is it with an acknowledgment of God in mind, constantly considering what is glorifying and pleasing to Him? “In all your ways acknowledge Him.”
[4] Are we remaining humble enough to rely on God’s guidance and instruction for each day? Do not be “wise in your own eyes.”
[5] Do we maintain a reverential awe for God and the power that is His to exercise? “Fear the Lord.”
[6] Are we keeping our face toward God, continually turning away from that which is evil and out of character with our Christian walk? “Turn away from evil.”
To properly focus on these things and live in accordance with that focus will demonstrate God to truly be the SOVEREIGN POWER in our life! Living under His authority provides the greatest benefits and privileges we could ever possess. Let us maintain our unity with Him and His Will; living as good citizens (Philippians 3:20) of the Heavenly Kingdom.
Have a great day LIVING AS A PRIVILEGED CITIZEN OF GOD’S ETERNAL KINGDOM!

Alliance & Reliance! (2 of 3)
Yesterday, as we considered alliances being made to gain more strength against an enemy, we also noted some alliances have been made with an enemy in order TO SECURE PEACE. The devil is an enemy who may deceptively promise PEACE, but he is certainly not one with whom we would want to seek an alliance. However, in association with the subject of enemies, note something else James pointed out that must be kept in mind.
James stated…
“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes TO BE A FRIEND OF THE WORLD MAKES HIMSELF AN ENEMY OF GOD.” (James 4:4 ESV)
To befriend the world is to go along with its ways and to do so is to become an enemy of God. To live outside a relationship with Christ and to choose to live outside the sphere of God’s Will is to be an enemy of God because we are not living for Him, but rather against Him. Allying ourselves with the world and relying upon its standards and wisdom for life must be guarded against because we do not want God for an enemy. (note Hebrews 12:29) It is in Christ, we have been delivered from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9-10) and where we can find peace (Romans 5:1) with the One with whom we would otherwise be enemies. Therefore we must be resolute in our decision to break from the world and the things of it. (note 1 John 2:15-17) We cannot be “double minded” (James 4:8) in loving and following the things of the world and the things of God. Instead we must fully ally ourselves with God, accepting His provision of PEACE that has enabled us to no longer be His enemies. To befriend God and rely upon His Will is the only path that leads to PEACE. May we remain on it.
Have a great day BEING A COHORT OF GOD!

Alliance & Reliance! (1 of 3)
There may be many reasons behind the forming of alliances in this world, but perhaps two general reasons would be TO STRENGTHEN (gain manpower and support) or to unify (perhaps even with an enemy in order to have peace). On the one hand the focus is on STRENGTH to “withstand” an enemy and the other is to secure peace “with” an enemy.
James urged…
“(7) SUBMIT YOURSELVES therefore TO GOD. RESIST THE DEVIL, and he will flee from you. (8) DRAW NEAR TO GOD, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-8 ESV)
We need to be allied with God, relying upon HIS STRENGTH, in order to victoriously stand against the devil. When we become too self-confident and think we have enough strength in and of ourselves to stand against the cunning of the devil, we will find ourselves in trouble. (i.e. 1 Cor. 10:12) We cannot do it on our own and there is no other alliance we can form that will be adequate in resisting the influence of this enemy than the one with God.
We are to remain on guard (1 Peter 5:8), but to do so while still relying upon the STRENGTH OF GOD. It is important for us to be “STRONG IN THE LORD and in the STRENGTH OF HIS MIGHT” (Ephesians 6:10) in order to stand against the devil’s schemes. (Ephesians 6:11) May we continue to draw near in complete alliance with God so that we will have adequate STRENGTH to withstand this foe.
Have a great day A MEMBER OF GOD’S COALITION!

AMEN!
The Greek word “amen” is actually transliterated from the Hebrew word and therefore, between the Greek and Hebrew they sound the same. The Hebrew meaning of the word focuses on certainty, truthfulness, and faithfulness. The word carries the idea of “it is and shall be so” or “so be it.” Any association of this idea with God should bolster our FAITH.
Do we understand the sense of FAITH associated with stating “amen”? When we say “amen” at the end of a prayer do we view it as the period or exclamation mark at the end of a long list of requests or do we recognize the “amen” as a willingness to submit to the Will and Wisdom of God in whatever way He sees fit to respond to our prayer? How much do we truly TRUST Him? When we say “amen” as the Word of God is read and proclaimed from the pulpit, is it simply a statement to encourage the preacher to preach on or is it our own declaration that we believe God and are ready to follow His Will? Do we have a FAITH that is eager to accept and put into practice whatever God has said?
Someone has asserted, “Faith is saying amen to God.” [source: list of sentence sermons] Perhaps we frequently use the word, but does the way we live our life declare it as well? Not only should we be willing to say “amen” with our lips, but also with our life!
Paul encouraged regarding what we have in Christ when he stated…
“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that WE UTTER OUR AMEN TO GOD for his glory.” (2 Corinthians 1:20 ESV)
The giving of Jesus was one of the ways in which God has clearly revealed He has our best interests always in mind. Since He has given us His Son, why should we wonder with regard to other blessings He has promised? (note Romans 8:32) God is faithful. He is truthful. We can be certain with regard to what He has declared. If we are in Christ -- the glorious realm of God’s resounding “YES” -- our entire being ought to utter our “amen” to God. Let it be so!
Have a great day LIVING AN “AMEN” TO GOD!

Above All!
When we consider all the things we need to focus on in life, we often find ourselves REPRIORITIZING in order to get it all in. What goes toward the top of the list may be constantly changing. However, what above all else must be our focus as we set our PRIORITIES? What must always take first place over everything else?
The psalmist David declared…
“I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for YOU HAVE EXALTED ABOVE ALL THINGS YOUR NAME AND YOUR WORD.” (Psalm 138:2 ESV)
Affirming our Lord’s place, Paul affirmed…
“(9) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him THE NAME THAT IS ABOVE EVERY NAME, (10) so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)
This is the reality whether all accept it now or not. Does our life reflect our acceptance of this truth? Throughout each day there are many words we may hear and speak. Does the Word of God take PRIORITY over them all? And of all those whom we seek to please in life, is the NAME OF GOD and OUR LORD JESUS at the top of the list to be glorified in all our actions? Of all the concerns regarding daily living, the reflection of our life on God, His Word, and the position of the Lord in our life is to take top PRIORITY. May the wisdom of such PRIORITIZING be displayed in our life in a manner that draws others to do the same. Someday every knee will bow. (Romans 14:11-12) May the bowing begin now!
Have a great day KEEPING FIRST THINGS FIRST!

Synergy!
We may be blessed with a lot of energy that enables us to accomplish many things. Praise God for good health and strength that helps us carry out the varying tasks at hand. However, “synergy” provides an energy beyond ourselves that is magnified in a marvelous way. What is “synergy”? Simply said, “synergy” is two or more things (whether machines, people or organizations) working together where the SUM RESULT IS GREATER than that of the individual effort.
An example of “synergy” was observed during a horse-pulling contest where the first place horse was able to move a 4,500 pound sled and a second place horse pulled one weighing 4,000 pounds. Wondering what the horses could do together, they were hitched up and it was found they were able to move 12,000 pounds. That was not double, but rather almost three times as much as these horses were able to pull separately.
There may be much I can do and much you can do. However, for us to work together does not merely double the effort, but MULTIPLIES IT. And when we are joined with God in the work, what can be accomplished is MAGNIFIED MANY TIMES MORE.
Paul urged the church at Corinth toward unity in their labors together. There was a collective role to be played (i.e. 1 Corinthians 3:5-8) with the recognition that God was also involved and would provide the increase.
Paul then declared…
“For we are GOD’S FELLOW WORKERS. You are God’s field, God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:9 ESV)
The word used by Paul in this text was “sunergoi” (a compound of “sun” meaning “with” and “ergon” meaning “work”; from the Greek “sunergos” or “synergos”, a reference to co-workers or fellow laborers). This Greek word is part of the background of our English word, “synergy”. The Corinthian brethren were to keep in mind with whom their labors were connected. So should we.
Not only are we to be workers together as brothers and sisters in Christ, but also co-workers with God. Such “synergy” will MAGNIFY the effort many times over as we join in works of service in accordance with His Will. Just like the Christians at Corinth we need to recognize what can be accomplished when we work as a team.
Paul, knowing the dynamic of this “synergy” could confidently declare…
“I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” (Philippians 4:13 ESV)
May “synergy” be the picture of the energy being expended in the labors God has called us to. Together with Him the effort will not merely be doubled, but will be MULTIPLIED and God will provide the increase of fruit from the labors. Let us remain involved as a part of His team.
Have a great day JOINED WITH GOD IN WORKS TO HIS GLORY!

The "Little People" !
Sometimes people move up into a position in society where they are so focused on the praise they are receiving they forget the “little people”. Feeling they are now in a class of their own they no longer have time for those of a lowly stature. After all, they are now too important for such people. Now hobnobbing with the bigwigs and numbered among the “important” people, they have a reputation to uphold and must be careful they do not stoop too low and chance losing the esteem they crave.
How often throughout the history of mankind has their been a struggle with thinking too highly of self? Too many times people have shown themselves to be unable to rightly handle position and power. Like Nebuchadnezzar (note Daniel 4:28-33) and Herod (note Acts 12:20-23) they need to be brought down a few rungs on the ladder to remember they are only human. However, the One Who truly is HIGH AND MIGHTY; the One Who deserves all the praise of all mankind; the One Who has supreme authority as the Sovereign of the universe; the One Who is truly in a class of His own -- He maintains a mindfulness of the humble and lowly who look to Him.
David remarked…
“For THOUGH THE LORD IS HIGH, HE REGARDS THE LOWLY, but the haughty he knows from afar.” (Psalm 138:6 ESV)
It is mankind’s comparisons that cause a perception problem, but God does not judge by human standards. He does not look down on humanity, but looks upon them to ultimately draw them to Him. He is ever mindful of even the “little people”; those whom mankind might consider insignificant.
In Psalm 113, acknowledging God’s position above the nations and His glory being above the heavens (Psalm 113:4), the Psalmist went on to state…
“(5) Who is like THE LORD OUR GOD, who is seated on high, (6) who LOOKS FAR DOWN on the heavens and the earth? (7) He RAISES THE POOR from the dust and LIFTS THE NEEDY from the ash heap, (8) to MAKE THEM SIT WITH PRINCES, with the princes of his people. (9) He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. PRAISE THE LORD!” (Psalm113:5-9 ESV)
Men and women can quickly rise and fall in the eyes of the world. It is God Who is able to provide a place to truly belong; a place where we can have a sense of family and a feeling of significance like no other the world can offer. And it is all possible because the truly HIGH AND MIGHTY has not forgotten the “little people”. Our significance to Him was displayed through His Willingness to send the Son to give His life for us, providing the adequate means of renewal and eternal salvation. May we allow Him to have the significance in our life He deserves and we need as we trust Him to do the exalting He desires to provide.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE SIGNIFICANCE WE HAVE TO GOD!

Between Elim And Sinai!
We may focus on moments and places of blessing in our journey through life, but what marks the occurrences in between? Is God and His provision sometimes forgotten along the way?
As God lead Israel on the journey from Egyptian captivity toward the promised land, Elim was a place where Israel encamped by twelve springs of water and found refreshment. (Exodus 15:27) The journey was to then move on toward Sinai; a glorious meeting place with God where the people were to worship and Moses would receive the Law of God to be delivered to the people. In Exodus chapter 16 we find a reference to a place described as being between Elim and Sinai.
We read…
“(1) They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the WILDERNESS OF SIN, which is BETWEEN ELIM AND SINAI, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. (2) And THE WHOLE CONGREGATION OF THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL GRUMBLED AGAINST MOSES AND AARON in the wilderness, (3) and the people of Israel said to them, ‘Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.’” (Exodus 16:1-3 ESV)
WILDERNESS OF SIN! This was the name of the place, not a description of what took place in the region. However, we might think it a fitting name considering Israel’s lack of trust in God once again being displayed.
Perhaps we have wondered if an appropriate name for the realm in which we live might be “WILDERNESS OF SIN”. For many their life has become a desert, a wasteland, a void, a place of wandering with disregard for God and the wisdom of His Will. The room for grumbling is not because God is unwilling to lead and provide, but because people have removed themselves from the sphere of His blessings, separating themselves from Him by their sins.
Note the desire expressed by the psalmist David.
“(23) Search me, O God, and KNOW MY HEART! Try me and know my thoughts! (24) And see if there be any grievous way in me, and LEAD ME IN THE WAY EVERLASTING!” (Psalm 139:23-24 ESV)
Life needs to be lived with a heart properly focused toward God. We can trust Him to lead us from wherever we are to where He desires us to be. May our life reflect the wisdom of following God and His Ways so that others might recognize the WILDERNESS OF SIN in which they are presently wandering and turn their hearts toward God. There is an eternal promised land to which He desires to lead all humanity.
Have a great day WALKING WORTHY OF BEING FOLLOWED!

On The Soapbox!
The story has been told of a preacher and a soap maker who were walking together, when the soap maker began to question the preacher, asking, “What good is religion? There has been religion for thousands of years and yet people still treat each other badly.” The preacher was silent until they came upon a boy, dirty from playing in the street. The preacher then turned to the soap maker and asked, “What good is soap? We have had soap for thousands of years and still people get dirty.” The soap maker immediately protested such a comparison, insisting that soap had to be PUT TO USE for people to be clean. “Exactly!”, declared the preacher. “Just as religion must be APPLIED to the life in order for it to do any good.”
People get on their proverbial “soapbox” with all kinds of issues, finding fault with many aspects of life. Some of the criticism is properly directed while other is based on a misunderstanding of where the root of the problem actually rests. It is true there have been abuses through the ages in the name of “religion” (some even taking place today), but the fault has not been with what God has declared, but rather with the actions (or inactions) of mankind.
Though the Old Law was a shadow of the greater things to come (Hebrews 10:1), it was still given as a guide to righteousness. Some would claim the Law didn’t work. Though there was a limitation to what the Law could provide in comparison to the more adequate provision we have in Christ (i.e. Hebrews 9:13-14; 10:11-12), God’s Law was intended to direct hearts to live pleasing to Him and live rightly with one another. So where did the true fault rest?
The Hebrew writer stated…
“(7) For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. (8) FOR HE FINDS FAULT WITH THEM when he says: ‘Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, (9) not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.’” (Hebrews 8:7-9 ESV)
Unless God’s principles are APPLIED to life, it is going to be dirty and will contain that which stinks. It is only by recognizing and accepting His authority that life can be cleaned up. Through the proper APPLICATION of God’s Will our life can have a sweet aroma.
Paul exhorted the church at Ephesus to…
“(1) Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. (2) And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, A FRAGRANT OFFERING AND SACRIFICE TO GOD.” (Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV)
Let us live in Christ-likeness so that our life too can be a “fragrant offering” to God. The principles from Scripture that we have learned, received, heard, and seen must be PUT INTO PRACTICE (Philippians 4:9) for there to be any benefit. According to Jesus it is those who hear God’s word and keep it who are truly blessed. (Luke 11:28) May it always be properly APPLIED that in the end we may come forth from life smelling like a rose.
Have a great day LIVING A GOD CLEANED LIFE!

Living And Active!
Being alive is more than just existing. Paul noted the self-indulgent as being dead even while they still lived. (1 Timothy 5:6) As the blood pressure and pulse are taken to reveal the VITAL SIGNS of physical life, the way we live and act reveals what is going on within us spiritually. Whether or not we are truly living is dependent on what foundation we are building our life upon.
The Hebrew writer stated…
“For THE WORD OF GOD IS LIVING AND ACTIVE, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ESV)
With the reference to soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and the thoughts and intentions of the heart, we should recognize how God’s Word is practical for all of life: spiritual, physical, and intellectual. If we have taken the “living and active” word within, our life should be marked as being “living and active” in accordance with the Word’s power within. When we allow the word to be “living and active” within us, our life will be “living and active” to the glory and praise of God.
The Scriptures are more than words printed on a page. God’s Word contains the power to bring life where there has been deadness. It provides hope where there has been despair. It brings stability where life has been out of balance. It produces renewal where the decay of sinfulness has been taking place. However, in order for this to occur, God’s Word must be allowed to be “living and active” in our life. It is only then that our life can also be in truth, “living and active”.
What do our spiritual VITAL SIGNS indicate? Are we anemic? Are we stressed? Is our immune system down? Or are we strong with the blood of Jesus and the “living and active” Word of God running through our veins? May the vitality they bring be revealed through a “living and active” exercise of faith and obedience to God in our daily life.
“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be IN GOOD HEALTH, AS IT GOES WELL WITH YOUR SOUL.” (3 John 2 ESV)

Presentably Dressed!
Laundry seems to be a never ending job for my wife. As soon as she empties the clothes hamper it begins to fill again. We appreciate permanent press clothes that eliminate the need for ironing. However, even if the clothes have been washed, if left sitting in the dryer (rather than being immediately folded or hung up), crammed into a drawer, or hung wrong in the closet, they will end up with creases and WRINKLES that will make us appear very sloppily dressed. There is also the need to specially treat any stains that might be present in order for them to not become set in the garment.
In this life we are prone to slop stuff on ourselves -- not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. The changing of our clothes does not change what is going on within our life. Perhaps we might look good to others, but we’re aware of the STAINS and the WRINKLES. And not even an industrial washer, dryer, or steam press is capable of dealing with those.
Jesus gave Himself up for the church…
“(26) that he might sanctify her, HAVING CLEANSED HER BY THE WASHING OF WATER WITH THE WORD, (27) so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, WITHOUT SPOT OR WRINKLE or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians 5:26-27 ESV)
We need Jesus and the Word to take care of the SPOTS and WRINKLES that have developed in our life. We can’t “Shout”® out these STAINS or “steam” out these WRINKLES. Baptized into Christ (coming into contact with the power of His cleansing blood) and continually being led by the Word is the only means of getting out the SPOTS and WRINKLES and having our life hang straight in the eyes of God.
We may greatly appreciate the machines, the person, or even the laundry service that takes care of our clothes. Nevertheless, when it comes to the SPOTS and WRINKLES of our life, let us praise God for the adequate service of cleansing available in Jesus Christ, our only means of standing presentable before Him.
Have a great day WITH LIFE LAUNDERED BY THE LORD!

Letting It Make Sense!
Have you ever wondered why something seemed so clear to you, but others didn’t appear to get it? Perhaps they did not want to get it. Or it could be their focus was so tainted by preconceived ideas they really couldn’t understand. Someone has said, “Talking sense today isn’t quite good enough; it must sound like nonsense so a nutty world can more easily understand.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] Have you experienced conversations or situations where such seemed to be the case; the nuttier the idea the quicker it was accepted?
Part of the reason many in this world struggle with coming to grips with the truth is they are trying to comprehend it based on the wrong wisdom. Some things don’t seem to make sense until one begins to develop the “mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16) Worldly views of things -- even of Jesus (i.e. 2 Corinthians 5:16) -- make it difficult to understand the true SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE. That’s where Nicodemus struggled in his discussion with Jesus regarding being born again. (note John 3:4 & 12) It didn’t make sense physically, but as Christians, we know how it does SPIRITUALLY.
In Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth he noted…
“(20) Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? HAS NOT GOD MADE FOOLISH THE WISDOM OF THE WORLD? (21) For since, in the wisdom of God, THE WORLD DID NOT KNOW GOD THROUGH WISDOM, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:20-21 ESV)
Had the world (in its wisdom) understood what was going on, Paul declared they would not have crucified the Lord. (1 Corinthians 2:8) There is wisdom beyond ourselves to which we must look. If man’s wisdom were enough, would not this world be a better place to live than it is? Those who simply go with their feelings or personal inclinations will always struggle with the wisdom of God.
Paul went on to point out…
“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them BECAUSE THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED.” (1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV)
Religion based on a crucified Christ was a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles. (1 Corinthians 1:22). However, to come to know our Lord’s power over death and His ability to renew life gives us all the hope we need to press on toward the eternity that awaits us. May we continue to view life through SPIRITUAL eyes while maintaining a faith resting on what God has revealed.
Have a great day ACCEPTING THE WISDOM FROM ABOVE!

Peace! Be Still!
Yesterday was fairly nice. It was a cool Fall day, but the sun was shining. However, the previous few days we had some pretty strong winds accompanied by plenty of rain. As I walked within view of the water this past Saturday I enjoyed hearing the sound of the waves crashing against the beach and watching some of the boats tossed about by the boisterous waves whipped up by the wind. I was even challenged in my walking by the force of the wind against me. All this brought to mind the words of the hymn “Master, The Tempest Is Raging” (by Mary A. Baker and Haratio R. Palmer, 1874), a hymn apparently inspired by the story of Jesus and His disciples in a boat on a storm tossed sea. As I continued to walk, the tempest was raging and the waves were billowing. Where I was at the time, I had no shelter from the wind.
Reading the account in Mark’s Gospel we find the disciples filled with fear as the storm raged around them. Bear in mind four of them had been fishermen and were familiar with the sea. What was Jesus doing? He was peacefully sleeping. The disciples, in their alarm and perhaps wonder as to how Jesus could be so CALM at such a time, woke Him.
We then read…
“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and THERE WAS A GREAT CALM.” (Mark 4:39 ESV)
Was the GREAT CALM of the sea probably not also matched by the GREAT CALM within the disciples as they looked at the sea and at Jesus in awe and wonder? More than the sea around them, the disciples needed to have their fears CALMED within. They needed to remember Who was in the boat with them. We also need to keep in mind the One Who is in our life with us in order to not become so anxious and agitated when things are not going as smoothly as we would prefer.
This past weekend was a pretty full one. I had some extra things on my plate as well as studies and outlines to finish up. As I tried to maximize my study time I was faced with the frustration of one of my lesson files on the computer deciding not to open. Fortunately I had printed out the work I had already completed, so I at least had a copy to work from. Nevertheless, time spent having to redo some of my work was highly aggravating since it meant more time out of an already busy schedule. On top of this I was struggling with a cold. To say the least I was buffeted by a real sense of lack of peace as a tempest of frustration welled up from within me.
It is not life’s storms around me that often create the biggest challenge to me, but the ones that rise from within myself. What must I continue to bear in mind? The fact that things generally work out. My Sunday morning sermon was titled “What Lack I?” from Matthew 19:16-22. It will be preached next Sunday because one thing I ended up “lacking” (due to my cold) was a voice. I instead shared a shorter focus and we did a little more congregational singing. In the end everything that needed to be done through the past week and the weekend did get done.
So many times when I have an already busy workload and extra things come up, though priorities sometimes get shifted, God always seems to help me get done what needs to be completed. When the tempest of frustration begins to rock me, that’s when I need to remember this. I need to look away from myself and the troubles of the moment and hear the Lord’s words, “Peace! Be still!” I’m not alone. There is plenty of reason for a GREAT CALM to be experienced. There is One greater than me Who is in control. “Peace! Be Still!”
Have a great day FINDING THE CALM IN SPITE OF THE STORMS!

The Energizer!
Paul, as he was trying to encourage faithfulness in the brethren at Philippi, made the statement:
“for it is GOD WHO WORKS IN YOU, both to will and to work FOR HIS GOOD PLEASURE.” (Philippians 2:13 ESV)
The Greek word translated “works” here is “energon”. Does that bring to mind our word “energy”? As we commit ourselves to God’s works we need to ALLOW HIM TO ENERGIZE us. Now, that does not mean we sit and wait for Him to start “strong arming” us around. His works can only be done and brought to completion by His power as we co-operate with Him. God is working, but we work too. For example, consider working with scissors. What does the cutting? The scissors. However, who supplies the power? The one holding the scissors. One way to picture ourselves involved in God’s works is that we are the tools in His hand EMPOWERED BY HIM to continue His work.
Let me share the passage with you again from the New Living Translation:
“For God is working in you, GIVING YOU THE DESIRE TO OBEY HIM AND THE POWER TO DO WHAT PLEASES HIM.”
Perseverance and steadfastness in the work of God is possible as HE ENERGIZES us to carry out His will. Though some tasks may be tougher than others, He has not asked us to do anything He will not ENABLE or EMPOWER us to do. He is the ENERGIZER to truly keep us going, and going, and going....
Have a great day ENERGIZED BY GOD FOR HIS WORKS!

What A Building!
In Matthew 24, Jesus and His disciples had just left the Temple in Jerusalem and the disciples called His attention to its buildings. (Matthew 24:1) They seemed quite impressed by the sight. Jesus, however, pointed out that a time was coming when these would be destroyed (Matthew 24:2), and today when you visit that site there is no question to the truthfulness of Jesus’ statement.
When I read in the Scriptures the description of the building of Solomon’s Temple, I can’t help but think what a magnificent structure it must have been. He was quite the ARCHITECT. Now, by the time of Jesus’ walk on earth that Temple had been rebuilt several times, but I’m sure it and the surrounding buildings were still impressive. That is why the disciples were noting them. Nevertheless, there is another structure that is even more impressive because of the magnificent material it is made of, as well as the greatness of the ARCHITECT behind it. It is a building of a spiritual nature.
Note Paul’s reference to this building in his letter to the church at Ephesus:
“(19) So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, (20) built on the FOUNDATION OF THE APOSTLES AND PROPHETS, CHRIST JESUS HIMSELF BEING THE CORNERSTONE, (21) in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into A HOLY TEMPLE in the Lord. (22) In him you also are being BUILT TOGETHER INTO A DWELLING PLACE FOR GOD BY THE SPIRIT.” (Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV)
Wow! What a structure! What better cornerstone to square it all up and join it together than Jesus Christ the chief cornerstone? What better foundation than that of the inspired Apostles and the Prophets, God’s messengers of the new and the old that centered on the salvation that came through Christ? And what greater privilege is there than for us to be a part of the structure being built together as a Holy Temple wherein God can dwell by His Spirit? What’s more -- it is a structure that no worldly empire can ever destroy! How wonderful to be used in the building of the GREATEST ARCHITECT!
Have a great day KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE A PART OF!

Loving Life!
There are many who seem to love life and try to live it to the fullest. There is much we can enjoy in this life. Life is filled with many sweet experiences and to be able to live life with exuberant joy is a marvelous way to be carried through each day. However, there are many who love life for the all the wrong reasons. They love life for the personal pleasures they may get out of it rather than living it for the purposes for which it is given. For these individuals, life is lived and choices are made based upon what they want rather than with an acknowledgement of GOD AND HIS WILL. Therefore, it may be right that they love life, yet while not living and loving that which is right.
Peter (quoting from Psalm 34:12-16) exhorted his readers…
“(10) For ‘WHOEVER DESIRES TO LOVE LIFE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; (11) let him TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; let him seek peace and pursue it. (12) For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’” (1 Peter 3:10-12 ESV)
The literal Greek in verse 10 implies the idea of “wanting” or “wishing” to love life. It is choosing to love life. We all have the freedom to choose how we will live, but with choices come consequences. We must give serious consideration as to the impact the way we live has on others and with regard to future days. Those who simply live life for personal pleasure will somewhere down the road look back with regret.
Where does our love for life rest? It is true we may have good days and bad days throughout our life. However, the trials we endure should not cause us to give up on life. Some of the days the world may consider bad may in fact be viewed by us as good days knowing the strength of character developed through enduring and the assurance of hope that is ours through LIVING LIFE FOR GOD.
Life is a loving gift from God and He holds a promise of it for an eternity. To truly love life is to thank Him for it and USE IT TO HIS GLORY. We are to be about the business of doing good, thus following the example Jesus set as He walked this earth. (Acts 10:38) Therein can be found the greatest sustaining joy for living. May each day we live reflect to the world how life can be loved and lived to the fullest through living to PLEASE GOD and offering ourselves in service to those around us. By living life in this way we will experience the difference between a full life and a fulfilling one. We’re going to love it!
Have a great day FILLING LIFE WITH ALL THAT IS TRULY GOOD!

Manufactured Or Grown?
Manufacturing plants make parts for products and assemble them. Those parts are molded, cut, bolted or hammered together, welded, crimped, shaped by heat or pressure, primered and painted, etc. Sometimes the parts are manufactured in one place and assembled at another. And in the process of mass production, some of these products may fail to work. These may look right on the outside, but nevertheless have something wrong within.
There is another kind of plant; the plant that grows up from the ground. The soil is prepared, the SEED is planted, the area is fertilized and water to encourage the growth; all done with the expectation of a fruitful harvest.
Which of these is a better picture for our life? We may buy products of which we have no idea what is inside, the quality even varying from product to product. However, when we purchase SEEDS to plant in the ground, we know the plant God created to form from within, and with the proper nurturing that simple SEED will grow and produce after its kind.
Is our Christianity merely manufactured (notice how “man” is a part of the word); something slapped together, assembled by man, or simply looks good on the outside while no telling what’s shorting out within? Or is our life growing up from a SEED germinating to provide true life and godly fruit? Someone has said, “Reputation is manufactured; character is grown.” [source: list of “sentence sermons”] We might be known for a label we wear, but what is truly within?
James exhorted his readers…
“Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE IMPLANTED WORD, WHICH HIS ABLE TO SAVE YOUR SOULS.” (James 1:21 ESV)
What is truly going on within us? In order for the imperishable SEED of God’s living and abiding Word (1 Peter 1:23) to grow and naturally produce in our life what it was designed to, we must allow it to germinate. It must be cultivated, nurtured, and watered. Effort should be made to keep the weeds (worldliness, sin, etc.) out, as it is carefully and lovingly tended. When this is done that SEED can only produce the godly character God designed it to produce. May that growth continue daily according to God’s design.
Have a great day GROWING IN GODLY CHARACTER!

Call It To Mind!
Some people have a real sour outlook on life. Perhaps, being made aware of some of the calamities and challenges certain individuals have faced, we would not blame them. Reading through Lamentations I came across what could possibly be considered the “best” statement for one who is truly soured on life. It was spoken by one of God’s prophets. Fortunately, however, that is not where his focus remained.
We read…
“(16) He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes; (17) my soul is bereft of peace; I HAVE FORGOTTEN WHAT HAPPINESS IS; (18) so I say, “MY ENDURANCE HAS PERISHED; SO HAS MY HOPE FROM THE LORD.” (Lamentations 3:16-18 ESV)
Imagine one being so miserable they could not even remember what happiness (alternate translations are “good” or “prosperity”) was! The days of Jeremiah were sad times. He persistently proclaimed the message and warnings of God for twenty-three years, all the while the people continued refusing to listen. (Jeremiah 25:3) Most preachers would have quit long before that! Is it any wonder Jeremiah has been called the “weeping prophet”? As Jeremiah faithfully proclaimed the message of God, he was mistreated, threatened, called a liar, imprisoned, and thrown into a cistern. If that wouldn’t sour someone on life, I don’t know what could?
As always, when one is in the depths of despair, the thing to do is to LOOK UP to God and call to mind His reliability! LIFTING OUR GAZE from where we are is not always easy. Sometimes we need the help of others to be reminded of what can still be counted on. Calling to mind the assurances God has given in His Word for those who seek Him also helps renew the spirit to press on. Remember that even above the dark clouds the sun is still shining. Even in the darkest of life’s misfortunes God is aware and His love for those who continue to seek Him endures. As I said above, Jeremiah’s focus was fortunately not left on this sour note.
Jeremiah went on to state…
“(21) But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: (22) The STEADFAST LOVE OF THE LORD NEVER CEASES; HIS MERCIES NEVER COME TO AN END; (23) they are NEW EVERY MORNING; GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS. (24) ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘THEREFORE I WILL HOPE IN HIM.’” (Lamentations 3:21-24 ESV)
Hope is renewed when we remember what God’s ultimate desire is; the restoration and salvation of lost souls. He admonishes and warns with an eagerness for mankind to turn back toward Him and His Will. With each new day dawns the mercies of God. His faithfulness is great! His love is enduring! Therefore let us keep LOOKING UP as we place our abiding hope in Him.
Have a great day SAVORING THE SWEET LOVING FAITHFULNESS OF GOD!

Friendship!
One of the joys of living is found in the development of good friendships. Those friendships can be greatly impacting, even to the point of changing the course of our life. Perhaps we have some friendships that have impacted us to the extent we realize our life could never have been the same without them.
I recently came across the following quotation regarding friendship. “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.” (Anais Nin) Isn’t that a beautiful description of the blessing a friendship can be in life? A friendship can open up a NEW WORLD of experiences and possibilities that might never have otherwise been known. A close abiding connection with another individual has the potential to bring birth to many NEW THINGS.
To His disciples, Jesus said…
“(12) This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (13) GREATER LOVE has no one than this, that someone LAYS DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. (14) YOU ARE MY FRIENDS IF YOU DO WHAT I COMMAND YOU.” (John 15:12-14 ESV)
Our friendship with Jesus doesn’t need to impact Him other than to bring Him joy in our submission to His Will. However, His friendship to us should be life changing. In seeking a friendship with us, Jesus was willing to lay down His life, and in that giving the door was opened to NEW LIFE for both now and eternity.
Paul encouraged the church at Corinth saying…
“Therefore, IF ANYONE IS IN CHRIST, HE IS A NEW CREATION. The old has passed away; behold, THE NEW HAS COME.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)
Do we truly recognize the blessing of the friendship with Jesus? By being united with Him in baptism we are provided the opportunity to “walk in NEWNESS OF LIFE” (Romans 6:4) as in Him we become a NEW CREATION. Living life in Christ should be like living in a whole NEW WORLD, having died to the old self in order to live for Him.
Life in Christ opens up NEW HORIZONS -- a whole new world of possibilities now and a steadfast hope for eternity -- as we can look confidently toward that NEW HOME He has gone to Heaven to prepare for us. Of all the life impacting friendships we enjoy, may we guard the one we have with Jesus the most! We could ask for no better friend.
Have a great day DYNAMICALLY AND ETERNALLY CHANGED BY CHRIST!

The Handwriting On The Wall!
I enjoyed playing on seesaws (teeter totters) as I was growing up. It was fun to try to get more weight on one side and hold whoever was on the other side up in the air. Another thing that was fun was to try to get the seesaw to balance with both sides level. I remember even trying to stand at the center point myself, attempting to hold the balance even.
Is such the picture of what it takes to bring balance into our life? Is our hope that we will have enough good stuff compared to the bad stuff that the balance will ultimately be TIPPED IN OUR FAVOR?
During the days of Daniel, Belshazzar (king of Babylon) made a great feast. As Belshazzar and his lords, wives, and concubines drank from the golden vessels his father (Nebuchadnezzar) had taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, the king was alarmed to see a hand appear and begin writing on the plaster of the palace wall. (Daniel 5:1-6)
Note the interpretation Daniel gave for what was written.
“(25) And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN. (26) This is the interpretation of the matter: MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; (27) TEKEL, YOU HAVE BEEN WEIGHED IN THE BALANCES AND FOUND WANTING; (28) PERES, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.’” (Daniel 5:25-28 ESV)
“Weighed in the balances and found wanting.” Perhaps that judgment of God is no surprise with regard to this Babylonian king. However, is that not also the reality of the “Handwriting On The Wall” with regard to our own life since we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God? (Romans 3:23) Are we not all lacking in knowledge, spirituality, full surrender to God, etc.?
In and of ourselves we can only be “found wanting.” Our own goodness is not enough to balance it out! True -- striving to be obedient to God’s Will should always be our aim. However, if that alone could ever possibly merit our salvation, Jesus need not have suffered and died for us. Separate from Christ there is no hope! (Ephesians 2:12) Our good weighing against the wrong we have done will never be enough to set the balance right with God. It takes His grace and mercy and the power of the blood Jesus shed on the cross to TIP THE BALANCE the other way. (Romans 3:24-25) Only by God’s provision do we have hope for the balance to be TIPPED IN OUR FAVOR! Praise God for the assurance of hope He has provided in Christ!
Have a great day TRUSTING GOD’S ADEQUACY IN DEALING WITH OUR SIN!
