A Refuge
Life is filled with challenges. There are many things we go through that are not easy. Nevertheless, in the midst of it all we can have a sense of peace knowing the hope we have in Christ. This life has many glorious aspects to it as well as many difficult ones. Perhaps we have sometimes felt it would be nice to pull over and park for a while. However, life goes on and we can have courage to press on because we have come to know that this life is not all there is to our existence. If it were, there might be good reason at times to quit.
To the church at Corinth, Paul stated…
“If in this life only we have HOPED IN CHRIST, we are of all people most to be pitied.” (1 Corinthians 15:19 ESV)
Because our HOPE goes beyond this realm we can find ourselves approaching life’s challenges with less fear than those who do not yet know that HOPE. As others observe us and wonder, hopefully the example of our faith will speak powerfully with regard to the HOPE we possess because of our knowledge there is more to our existence than meets the eye.
Solomon stated…
“The wicked is overthrown through his evildoing, BUT THE RIGHTEOUS FINDS REFUGE IN HIS DEATH.” (Proverbs 14:32 ESV)
Was this a part of Paul’s focus? As Paul continued to be a good steward of his time in this realm, he was encouraged on by his view of his greatest gain.
Note Paul’s attitude with regard to life and death.
“(21) For to me TO LIVE IS CHRIST, and TO DIE IS GAIN. (22) If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and BE WITH CHRIST, for that IS FAR BETTER. (24) But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. (25) Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, (26) so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.” (Philippians 1:21-26 ESV)
Having been provided a glimpse of some of the things Paul endured (2 Corinthians 11:23-28) we might easily understand a sense of eagerness with regard to the refuge death would provide. Paul knew his HOPE was (as Peter referred to it) a “living HOPE” (1 Peter 1:3) and the greatest gain he could receive would be through death. Nevertheless, while in this realm he would continue to serve the Lord’s purposes for his life.
Let us be diligent in living for Christ now, recognizing the ultimate gain in store for us. This life is just the beginning and death is not the end because in Christ we have a living HOPE!
Have a great day LIVING WITH GREAT EXPECTATIONS!

Joke's On Whom?
Do you like jokes? I do. I love to laugh. I also love to play jokes on people and I have had some pretty good ones played on me. It is wonderful to have a good sense of humor. In fact, I believe we need to have one in order to survive some situations in life. Such can be a good stress reliever. However, we do need to be careful!
Have you ever known someone who just didn't seem to know when to quit with the jokes? Or have you seen someone who appeared to lack good judgment in what was a good joke and what was not? Again -- we need to be careful! Some things have a tendency to backfire!
Have you ever experienced someone trying to seriously pull something over on you, but when you caught on they tried to get you to believe they were only joking all along?
Solomon wrote:
“(18) Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death (19) is the man who DECEIVES his neighbor and says, ‘I AM ONLY JOKING!’” (Proverbs 26:18-19)
Some things can really hurt! What some may think is funny could possibly be very damaging. And some joking may be merely a smoke screen for deception. Let's not make that our game!
Let us be very careful. It is okay to have fun with each other, but let us use some wisdom in how we joke. May we seek to make our laughter something that can also be glorifying to God.
Have a great day ENJOYING THIS LIFE GOD GAVE US!

Remaining Afloat!
When I took a lifesaving class quite a number of years ago, one of the lessons learned was that if stranded in water, heavy clothing should be discarded in order to not be weighed down. There was also instruction on how to use clothing (such as pants or a shirt) as floatation devices by knotting and filling them with air. When I took scuba diving lessons I was taught the importance of making sure the weight belt could be easily released to enable easy floating if necessary. Getting rid of the weight belt allowed the wetsuit and safety vest to provide buoyancy and thus saving energy when trying to remain afloat.
Someone has stated “God’s love keeps us afloat. When we cling to that love, it is only our sins that sink.” [source: bulletin clipping]
Jesus warned regarding becoming weighed down by self-indulgent living. (Luke 21:34) Being weighed down by such will cause us to sink lower and lower below the level of God’s Will. When we hold on to sin, it weighs us down. It needs to be released. If we do not recognize sin as sin, its weight will continue to pull us down and ultimately sink us.
In HIS GREAT LOVE, God has provided the means for keeping us afloat. However, we must remain in HIS LOVE. (i.e. John 15:10) We also need to lay aside every weight that will hinder our spiritual progress. (Hebrews 12:1)
Of God, Micah declared…
“He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities under foot. YOU WILL CAST ALL OUR SINS INTO THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA.” (Micah 7:19 ESV)
Let us hold to GOD’S LOVE as we live with a LOVE for His Will, allowing our sins to sink away from our life. As we keep our faith in Him and hold to His standards for living, He is able to keep us from sinking in the midst of a sea of worldliness. May HIS LOVE continue to be our life preserver.
Have a great day BUOYED BY THE SUSTAINING LOVE OF GOD!

Experience!
Life is filled with many varying experiences. These experiences can either make us or break us. They can make us better or make us bitter. They can save us or cave us. Though some are able to learn from experience, others seem to be unable to recover from it. Do we know where to focus when the going gets tough?
Paul suffered many things throughout his ministry which probably could have easily caused some to withdraw to some corner and throw themselves a pity party. (note 2 Corinthians 11:23-33) Considering the severity of some of those experiences, perhaps we wouldn’t blame them. Even before Paul (then known as Saul) was baptized it was noted he would suffer much for the Name of Christ. (Acts 9:16) Nevertheless Paul did not allow those experiences to get him down.
Note Paul’s attitude as expressed to the church at Rome.
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are NOT WORTH COMPARING WITH THE GLORY THAT IS TO BE REVEALED TO US.” (Romans 8:18 ESV)
There was a GREATER GLORY to which Paul continued to look. He knew grander things were coming and the experiences would be worth it all. With his focus fixed on the GLORY yet to be revealed, Paul pressed on for the sake of Christ and the ministry of the Gospel.
Though Paul had a firm resolve to press on, he still seemed very much aware of how others might perceive his sufferings and the impact the sight could have on their faith. Perhaps some would shrink back from the faith as they took note of the cost of discipleship exhibited in Paul’s life.
To the church at Ephesus Paul wrote…
“So I ask you NOT TO LOSE HEART OVER WHAT I AM SUFFERING for you, WHICH IS YOUR GLORY.” (Ephesians 3:13 ESV)
There is a battle raging between good and evil; between right and wrong. We need to stand firm as “a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:3) May we be encouraged by the bold faith of Paul and in spite of the experiences we might undergo for the sake of Christ, let us also press on recognizing the greater experience of an eternity with God. Though it may not seem so now, we will eventually see that all the challenges of this life will not be worth comparing to the GLORY that is to come.
Have a great day KNOWING IT WILL SURELY BE WORTH IT ALL!

Life's Realities!
It is the lesser things that often occupy our focus. Not that there is no significance in many of those things, but when we forget the greater things we lose the perspective necessary for prompting us to press on. Life is full of surprises. Some of these may be exciting while others are potentially devastating.
Most of us are probably familiar with what has been called “Murphy’s Law” which states, “If something can go wrong, it will!” That and other expressions associated with “Murphy’s Law” provide a rather pessimistic view of life, even though this may sometimes feel like the experience in this world. To hold such an outlook on life can create an atmosphere of fear and anxiety that sets the stage for bad things to happen. It is true there are many things in life we cannot anticipate. However, fretting about the possibilities beforehand does us no good. What we need to strive to retain is a strong faith to help us stand strong when we are faced with trials of various kinds. To do this we need to focus on that which is certain.
God’s Law, not “Murphy’s” is where we find the room for OPTIMISM. In view of the many unknowns this life may hold, it is the KNOWN’S God has revealed that must be kept in view to aid us in pressing on.
Peter (quoting Isaiah 40:6-8) encouraged…
“(22) Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, (23) since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the LIVING AND ABIDING WORD OF GOD; (24) for ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, (25) BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD REMAINS FOREVER.’ And this word is the good news that was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:22-25 ESV)
God’s abiding Word can be counted on. In spite of the frailty of the flesh, since His Word “remains forever” we can be OPTIMISTIC about the future to which it refers.
Paul also encouraged…
“(18) As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. (19) For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but IN HIM IT IS ALWAYS YES. (20) For ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD FIND THEIR YES IN HIM. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.” (2 Corinthians 1:18-20 ESV)
How does that relate to the realities of life? There are still bad things we may experience. There are still many unknowns. This life has its realities. However, God has realities which transcend this realm. As we abide in Christ we can count on all God’s promises to be a resounding “YES” for us. We can still count on what God will ultimately bring about because He has promised He will! May we continually view life here through the lense of the OPTIMISTIC assurance God has provided.
Have a great day TRUSTING WHAT’S TRULY REAL!

A Place To Belong!
Yesterday, as I was reading through the thirty-first chapter of Jeremiah, I was struck by a statement which reminded me of one of the Lord’s parables (which we will note in a moment). As Jeremiah prophesied of a time when a remnant of the people would return from Babylonian captivity, it was not just the noble and the healthy and the strong and those who might be best able to reestablish things in their homeland who would return.
Note who Jeremiah mentioned were to be among them.
“(7) For thus says the Lord: ‘Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, ‘O Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’ (8) Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, AMONG THEM THE BLIND and THE LAME, THE PREGNANT WOMAN and HER WHO IS IN LABOR, TOGETHER, A GREAT COMPANY, they shall return here.’” (Jeremiah 31:7-8 ESV)
Among those who would return from captivity were also the infirmed or frail; those afflicted with a limitation of some sort. They were NOT TO BE LEFT BEHIND. They were not to be considered insignificant or unworthy of being brought back. They would have a place in their homeland.
There is a similar picture of acceptance in Jesus’ parable of the “Great Banquet”. An invitation went out to many who, with various excuses, turned down the invitation when the time for the banquet had arrived. (Luke 14:16-20) However, the banquet was going to take place whether those guests came or not!
We read on…
“(21) So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, AND BRING IN THE POOR AND CRIPPLED AND BLIND AND LAME.’ (22) And the servant said, ‘Sir, WHAT YOU COMMANDED HAS BEEN DONE, and still there is room.’ (23) And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.’” (Luke 14:21-23 ESV)
Those who are accepted and important to God are not always those that mankind considers significant. Nevertheless, we must recognize the significance of all people. Their soul and the need of its salvation is to be valued. Do we struggle with our perception of others within the family of God?
Perhaps there are some in your youth group or congregation with whom you’re not quite sure how to relate. They are NOT TO BE LEFT BEHIND. Embrace them. Help them to realize you do value them and are glad they are there. If it takes a little extra time to converse with them, give them the time, valuing what they have to say. Ask God to help you develop a heart of compassion for all people as you seek to find ways to include others in the activities of God’s family.
Let us be mindful of helping others recognize their significance to us and to God. When we treat others in this way it makes it easy to see how God’s family is truly the place to belong now and for an eternity. May we do what we can to NOT LEAVE ANY BEHIND!
Have a great day ENCOURAGING OTHERS IN THE CHRISTIAN WALK!

Keep It In The Light!
I’m glad we have clocks and watches instead of having to rely upon sundials. Can you imagine trying to wear a sundial on the wrist? Would we use a flashlight to read it at night? (That in itself could put even people in the same room in a different time zone.) A sundial does not provide any useful information during the dark of night or if it is kept inside a room in the house. Dim or indirect sunlight does not work like the direct light of the bright sun. Direct sunlight is what allows a sundial to be useful as long as the sundial itself is also properly placed.
CONSCIENCE. What would we do without one? Not very well. Things would probably not be going very well for those around us either. Our English word “conscience” comes from the Latin “conscientia” (“con” from “com” meaning “with” and “scientia” meaning “knowledge”). For a conscience to be beneficial it must be based on certain knowledge because without proper knowledge it cannot function as a good guide.
Wait a minute! How did we get from sundials to a discussion of CONSCIENCE? Someone has said, “Conscience is like a sundial. When the truth of God shines on it, it points the right way.” [source: “sentence sermons”]
Just like a sundial being out of the light of the sun will not work properly, so it is when one does not have a proper understanding of truth. A CONSCIENCE can be weak due to inadequate information (i.e. 1 Corinthians 8:7) and would therefore not be able to properly guide. For our CONSCIENCE to work correctly it must receive adequate illumination.
CONSCIENCE tells us when it is time to leave certain situations that are improper and not God glorifying. CONSCIENCE can also tell us when it is time to stay and draw near to help others. The properly trained CONSCIENCE can trigger an alert in time to keep us from carrying out an action suggested by a thought that is wrong. Therefore we must seek to keep our CONSCIENCE in the light of Son, the truth of God. (John 14:6)
Note the psalmist’s request.
“Send out YOUR LIGHT AND YOUR TRUTH; LET THEM LEAD ME; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!” (Psalm 43:3 ESV)
And John stated…
“But WHOEVER DOES WHAT IS TRUE COMES TO THE LIGHT, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God.” (John 3:21 ESV)
The “science” of a good CONSCIENCE is to keep it in the light of truth. Such will promote timely actions and words to the benefit of others and the glory of God. May our life reveal the evidence of a CONSCIENCE daily guided with knowledge from above.
Have a great day SET FOR EACH MOMENT BY THE LIGHT OF THE SON!

Providing Something To Crave!
Do you like salty and sweet foods? Diet research indicates that when we are really hungry such foods may cause the taste buds to trick us into overindulging because these foods tend to taste even SALTIER AND SWEETER when we are really hungry. Now you may understand why when you get these types of cravings how easy it is to go through a whole bag of candy or chips before you know it. Therein lies a caution regarding diet. However, there may be a plus side with regard to spiritual things.
We live in a world of people who are hungry, but often eating the wrong things. There is a continual search, but no real satisfaction. Since the world is really hungering, perhaps we should recognize the opportunity that is ours to cause them to crave what we have in Christ. Not only are we to be the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13), but also sugar (or at least that which is sweet tasting). In the condition this world is in, hopefully what we offer will be sensed as even SALTIER AND SWEETER so that others end up with a continual craving for what is right.
We recognize the flavoring, healing, and preserving powers of salt. However, do we recognize the powerful influence of that which is sweet?
Solomon noted…
“(21) The wise of heart is called discerning, and SWEETNESS OF SPEECH increases persuasiveness. (22) Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly. (23) The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to his lips. (24) GRACIOUS WORDS ARE LIKE A HONEYCOMB, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” (Proverbs 16:21-24 ESV)
Some translations refer to the sweetness of speech increasing learning or instruction. The way we come across with the truth of God is important. As we talk about our faith are we mindful of the ways in which we can convey the SWEETNESS of relationships with other believers, the SWEETNESS of God’s promises, the SWEETNESS of the practical knowledge of the Word and other aspects of the Christian life? Solomon also mentioned “gracious words” as being like the SWEET “honeycomb”. Are we constantly mindful of the SWEETNESS of kind words and the power of gracious responses in the midst of hectic life?
All of this can cause those around us to crave what we have in Christ, giving us the opportunity to lead them to Him. May the SALTINESS AND SWEETNESS of Christian character be exhibited in our daily life that others will catch the craving.
Have a great day STIMULATING DESIRE FOR THE GOOD THINGS OF GOD!

Strong Willed! (part 2 of 2)
As we noted yesterday, dealing with a strong willed child can be quite challenging and dealing with strong willed adults can be even more so. We also considered how that strong will is most often a strong “won’t”! If we are going to have a strong will, may it be to REMAIN STEADFAST in the Will of God! It takes a strong will to PERSEVERE in the midst of differing values in a world that desires for us to conform to its will.
Remember Paul’s exhortation to the church at Rome.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is THE WILL OF GOD, what is GOOD and ACCEPTABLE and PERFECT.” (Romans 12:2 ESV)
It often takes a very strong will to ward off that pressure from the world. It is God’s Will that is perfect. The world’s and our own is often short sighted and off center; quite far from being perfect.
The Hebrew writer encouraged those going through tough times with these words:
“(36) For YOU HAVE NEED OF ENDURANCE, so that when you have DONE THE WILL OF GOD you MAY RECEIVE WHAT IS PROMISED. (37) For, ‘Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; (38) but MY RIGHTEOUS ONE SHALL LIVE BY FAITH, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.’ (39) But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but OF THOSE WHO HAVE FAITH AND PRESERVE THEIR SOULS.” (Hebrews 10:36-39 ESV)
How strong is our will to PERSEVERE without shrinking back? That is the STEADFAST resolve we need to keep us on the right path in life. Without that resolve we can find ourselves easily entangled in the things of the world. Are we always mindful of that which is of lasting significance?
John exhorted…
“(16) For all that is in the world -- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions -- is not from the Father but is from the world. (17) And the world is passing away along with its desires, but WHOEVER DOES THE WILL OF GOD ABIDES FOREVER.” (1 John 2:16-17 ESV)
Let us not get so caught up in the things of this world that we lose sight of that which will sustain us for an eternity with God. May we maintain a strong will to keep God’s Will in view as we engage in every activity of life.
Have a great day SUSTAINED BY AN UNSHRINKABLE FAITH IN AND COMMITMENT TO GOD’S WILL!

Strong Willed (part 1 of 2)
Dealing with a strong willed child can be quite challenging. Dealing with strong willed adults can be even more so. Who knows this better than God? Again and again we read the charge against God’s people as being stubborn, stiff necked, and rebellious. Though God provided the best guidance, as well as blessing after blessing, His Will was often ignored.
There are many who may think they have a strong will when in reality what they possess is a STRONG WON’T! Even after Jesus came this tendency still existed among those who considered themselves God’s people. It was those of hardened heart who condemned Jesus to be crucified. After He rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven, the Apostles continued to deal with opposition to the Will of God. Stephen, the first Christian to give his life for the faith (Acts 7:58), noted this STRONG WON’T among those with whom he tried to share the truth.
Stephen stated…
“(51) You STIFF-NECKED PEOPLE, uncircumcised in heart and ears, YOU ALWAYS RESIST THE HOLY SPIRIT. As your fathers did, so do you. (52) Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, (53) YOU WHO RECEIVED THE LAW as delivered by angels AND DID NOT KEEP IT.” (Acts 7:51-53 ESV)
A very good description of a STRONG WON’T! Is it any different today? What marks our own life? Are we ever guilty of “resisting” the Will of God? Anytime we choose our will over His we have “resisted” His Will. May we “resist” the urge and submit to Him.
Have a great day SUBMITTING TO GOD’S BLESSED WILL!

Glory Or Gloom!
When Moses was on the mountain to receive the Law from God, he stated his desire for God to show him His glory. (Ex. 33:18) God’s response was that He would have His goodness pass before him, but Moses could not see His face. (Exodus 33:19-20)
Speaking to Moses, God continued…
“(22) and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. (23) Then I will take away my hand, and YOU SHALL SEE MY BACK, but my face shall not be seen.” (Exodus 33:22-23 ESV)
What a glorious thing Moses was able to experience. No description is given, but Moses observed a sight not shared by others. This special servant of God received a special privilege as he was there in the presence of God on the mountain.
To consider the “BACK” OF GOD is not always a glorious picture. I thought of Moses’ experience mentioned above as I was reading through Jeremiah recently. The mention of the “BACK” OF GOD with regard to Judah during the day’s of Jeremiah was a picture of gloom, not glory.
We read….
“Like the east wind I will scatter them before the enemy. I WILL SHOW THEM MY BACK, NOT MY FACE, in the day of their calamity.” (Jeremiah 18:17 ESV)
This was not a picture of God revealing a part of Himself or coming to save, but rather God turning HIS BACK on them, allowing the nation to be taken captive by another. God was turning HIS BACK on the nation because they continued to turn their back on His commands. In order to have the glory of God turned back toward them there was the need to turn back toward Him.
The people needed a heart that would sincerely express the psalmist Asaph’s words…
“RESTORE US, O LORD God of hosts! LET YOUR FACE SHINE, THAT WE MAY BE SAVED!” (Psalm 80:19 ESV)
David encouraged…
“(3) Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? (4) He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. (5) He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. (6) SUCH IS THE GENERATION OF THOSE WHO SEEK HIM, WHO SEEK THE FACE OF THE GOD OF JACOB. Selah” (Psalm 24:4-6 ESV)
We do not want the “BACK” OF GOD turned toward us. Therefore, let us continually seek His face by submitting to His Will that the light of His favor may shine upon us.
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE GLORY OF GOD’S FAVOR!

Firm Trust!
Sometimes a simple statement can mean so much. This is especially so when it is connected with God. Anything associated with God should be significant to us if God holds the place in our life that is rightfully His!
As Jeremiah delivered God’s warnings to Judah, he faced opposition. There were others prophesying better things (i.e. Jeremiah 5:12-13), but these prophets were not speaking for God. Nevertheless, Jeremiah faithfully proclaimed God’s message and looked to God for his own deliverance.
Note the following simple statement made by Jeremiah.
“Heal me, O LORD, and I SHALL BE healed; save me, and I SHALL BE saved, for you are my praise.” (Jeremiah 17:14 ESV)
In Jeremiah’s mind, if God did something, IT WOULD BE SO! It would not be partial. It would not be halfway. It would be complete! Regardless of what else was going on around him, Jeremiah trusted God to sustain and ultimately save him. Even if the rest of the nation looked elsewhere for salvation, it was to God Jeremiah was resolved to look. His trust in God’s power was firm! If God would bring the healing (whether physical or spiritual) IT WOULD BE SO! If God would deliver him and save him, IT WOULD BE SO! Regardless of any threat, Jeremiah saw God as the One sufficiently able to save for he knew that blessing is on the one who trusts in the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:7) Keeping an unwavering trust in God will bring ultimate blessing to us as well.
Have a great day FIXING FAITH’S FOCUS ON GOD!

Name For Self!
Many people put in the effort of a lifetime to make a name for themselves. Some do it through infamy (i.e. John Wilkes Booth) while others through great accomplishments that bring public renown (i.e. Albert Einstein). Perhaps we also sometimes consider how wonderful it might be to make a name for ourselves, leaving an imprint of our life in this world.
Following the flood during the days of Noah, God had given the command to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” (Genesis 9:1) However, it was not long before we read of some who decided to build a city and a tower reaching to the heavens in order to, as the people put it, “make a name for ourselves lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth. (Genesis 11:4) They wanted to make a name for themselves, but were doing so with disregard for God’s plan of spreading out and replenishing the earth. These people did not succeed, but God did as He confused their language and by this means scattered them over the face of all the earth as He had commanded. (Genesis 11:7-9)
God had (and has) a desire to make a name for those who would LISTEN TO HIS WILL. Such were (and are) destined to be a special people.
Note the following God commanded Moses to speak to Israel.
“(5) Now therefore, if you will indeed OBEY MY VOICE and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; (6) and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” (Exodus 19:5-6 ESV)
After mentioning the disobedience of earlier generations, Peter noted the same special designation for God’s people under Christ.
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)
We see, then, the special character God desired both under the Old and the New to be descriptive of His people. This is the character by which we should desire to be noted. If we want to make a name for ourselves we need to seek to do it God’s way.
Note the sad message of God through Jeremiah.
“For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, THAT THEY MIGHT BE FOR ME A PEOPLE, A NAME, a praise, and a glory, BUT THEY WOULD NOT LISTEN.” (Jeremiah 13:11 ESV)
Had they LISTENED TO GOD, they could have been renowned as a people, a name, a praise, and a glory because God would have made it so. May we recognize the great blessing God desires to bestow on those who truly belong to Him. It is not through LISTENING to ourselves or this world, but TO HIM that we will be able to make an everlasting name for ourselves. The victorious life God can bring will provide for His Name to be written upon us. (note Revelation 3:12) May we allow God to work out His glorious Will in our life.
Have a great day KNOWN AS A TRUE CHILD OF GOD!

It Happened Along The Way!
Interesting things can happen to us along life’s way. Some of those events can be life changing if we let them. As we go through life there are many opportunities to be impacted in right ways. Whether or not that happens depends on how we perceive ourselves and whomever (or whatever) we are brought into CONTACT.
While Jesus was on the way to Jairus’ house (a synagogue ruler whose daughter was sick at the time of his going to Jesus, but then died, yet was raised by Jesus -- Luke 8:49-46), there was an encounter along the way. As Jesus’ popularity grew it became difficult for Him to go anywhere without crowds forming and encircling Him. The people pressed around Him (Luke 8:42) perhaps trying to get as close to Jesus as possible. That in itself is a noble aim. However, once drawn close and into CONTACT WITH THE CHRIST, how one is impacted and walks on from the experience is of eternal significance.
Note Luke’s record of a close encounter.
“(43) And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. (44) SHE CAME UP BEHIND HIM AND TOUCHED THE FRINGE OF HIS GARMENT, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. (45) And Jesus said, ‘Who was it that touched me?’ When all denied it, Peter said, ‘Master, THE CROWDS SURROUND YOU AND ARE PRESSING IN ON YOU!’ (46) But Jesus said, ‘SOMEONE TOUCHED ME, FOR I PERCEIVE THAT POWER HAS GONE OUT FROM ME.’ (47) And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. (48) And he said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.’” (Luke 8:43-48 ESV)
According to Peter’s statement it is clear that others touched Jesus besides this woman. In such a crowd CONTACT would have been hard to avoid. As the crowed pressed in around Him, though others bumped or brushed against or even purposely touched Jesus, it was only the woman on this occasion who drew power from that CONTACT WITH THE CHRIST. Perhaps there were many people around Jesus who were curious or wanted to see Him perform a sign of some sort. This woman, on the other hand, had a need and she looked in faith to Jesus for that need to be met. She saw Jesus as her last hope of release from her sickness and because of her faith (Luke 8:48) received power through her direct CONTACT WITH THE CHRIST.
Today there are many who are brought into CONTACT WITH THE CHRIST by the example of those living Christ-like lives, through reading the truth of Him in the Scriptures, or by hearing that truth verbally proclaimed. Nevertheless, not all come away having benefited from Christ’s life changing power. How are we impacted as we have come into CONTACT WITH THE CHRIST, our only hope of relief from a sin-sick soul and the only means of receiving the promise of eternal salvation?
As John began his first short letter, he wrote…
“(1) That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and HAVE TOUCHED WITH OUR HANDS, CONCERNING THE WORD OF LIFE -- (2) the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us -- (3) that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, SO THAT YOU TOO MAY HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH US; and indeed our fellowship is WITH THE FATHER AND WITH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.” (1 John 1:1-3 ESV)
John was not one who had merely a brief encounter with Jesus. His life had been changed through His CONTACT WITH THE CHRIST. He testified regarding the Christ with the aim of drawing others into fellowship with Him. Through that fellowship is the CONTACT that provides life. May we remain in fellowship with Christ to continue receiving His life changing and truly life providing (John 10:10) power.
Have a great day CONNECTED TO DRAW LIFE POWER FROM THE LORD!

Picturing Life! (part 2 of 2)
Yesterday we noted Hezekiah’s picture of life as something woven on a loom. Consider the passage again for a second image he provided.
Hezekiah stated…
“(12) MY DWELLING IS PLUCKED UP AND REMOVED FROM ME LIKE A SHEPHERD’S TENT; like a weaver I have rolled up my life; he cuts me off from the loom; from day to night you bring me to an end; (13) I calmed myself until morning; like a lion he breaks all my bones; from day to night you bring me to an end.” (Isaiah 38:12-13 ESV)
This life is a pilgrimage. We are on a journey. WE ARE NOT HOME YET. Getting too content and settled in within this earthly realm can cause us to loose sight of our greatest purpose and the heavenly goal.
Think of shepherds guiding their sheep to good pasture and pools from which to drink. The shepherds may enjoy the beauty of starlit peaceful nights. Their trek will take them through lovely meadows and up onto beautiful hillsides. Shepherds, moving about from place to place, but the time comes when the STAKES ARE PULLED UP AND THEY HEAD FOR HOME. As much as the shepherds might enjoy the journey and the settings in which grazing takes place, there is nothing like the joy of GOING HOME.
I love tent camping. I enjoy spending time hiking in the outdoors. However, this is all done with the anticipation of PULLING UP STAKES and returning home to a real house, a more comfortable bed, and all the other comforts of home.
Paul, in referring to our fleshly body as a “tent” encouraged…
“(1) For we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, WE HAVE A BUILDING FROM GOD, A HOUSE NOT MADE WITH HANDS, ETERNAL IN THE HEAVENS. (2) For in this tent we groan, LONGING TO PUT ON OUR HEAVENLY DWELLING, (3) if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. (4) For while we are still in this tent, we sigh, being burdened -- not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. (5) HE WHO HAS PREPARED US FOR THIS VERY THING IS GOD, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.” (2 Corinthians 5:1-5 ESV)
There will come the time to MOVE ON; to GO HOME; for our life to be “plucked up and removed from [us] like a shepherd’s tent.” It is what God has prepared us for. May we maintain a focus in life that will leave us prepared for when it is our time to MOVE ON into an eternity with Him.
Have a great day LOOKING TOWARD HOME!

Picturing Life! (part 1 of 2)
This morning as I was reading through three chapters of Isaiah, I was struck by two pictures Hezekiah gave relating to the end of life in this realm. These two images were in a statement made by this king of Judah, following a sickness from which he had recovered. (Isaiah 38:9 ESV) Hezekiah had been told to get his house in order because this sickness was originally going to end in death. (Isaiah 38:1) However, God ended up adding fifteen more years to his life. (Isaiah 38:5) Today, focus with me on one of these images and, Lord willing, we will consider the other one tomorrow.
We might be able to easily picture our life like a blanket or garment or tapestry, thread by thread being brought to completion. Some of the colors may stand out more than others just as each day or event of life varies in brightness and color. Our brighter days are mingled with the sometimes drab moments of our existence, but all are WOVEN together in a way that holds life’s garment together, leaving no holes. Every moment of life is filled with something. But in the hands of God, He can thread by thread, moment by moment, day by day, event by event, bring forth a final masterpiece (by the end of our years here) that is both beautiful and strong. Then the day comes when the last beautiful thread has been WOVEN into place and we are cut from the loom. Taken from the loom, rolled up, ready to be delivered. A completed work. A work of beauty. A masterpiece no longer fit for this realm, but prepared to be brought into the eternal presence of God.
May we continue to leave our life in the hands of the Master Weaver. The patterns and colors WOVEN into our life will be varied, but in the end God will make it what He intends it to be.
Have a great day LIVING LIFE ON THE LOVING LOOM OF GOD!

Battle For Minds!
There is a raging battle for the minds of mankind. The great difficulty, however, is that many held CAPTIVE by certain thoughts do not realize how imprisoned they are. Someone has said, “An obstinate man does not hold opinions -- they hold him.” [source” “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
“Opinions” are based on personal preferences and information available and should be open to change when more information brings further clarification. However, some in their stubbornness, resist such change. There are many “opinions” held that are contrary to what God has revealed in His Word.
When “opinions” have a firm grip on us it is difficult to change the thinking when new information or clearer truth is presented. On the other hand, when it comes to truth we do need to allow it to CAPTIVATE our thinking and use it as the filter for everything else. We must be cautious regarding what we allow to take our mind CAPTIVE. Some being held CAPTIVE by their opinions may think they are free to hold them, but do not realize how imprisoned they have become. It is truth that truly sets us free. (John 8:32)
Paul warned the church at Colosse…
“See to it that no one takes you CAPTIVE BY PHILOSOPHY and EMPTY DECEIT, according to HUMAN TRADITION, according to the ELEMENTAL SPIRITS OF THE WORLD, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8 ESV)
Such things are still taking the minds of many CAPTIVE today. What we need is something more powerful to CAPTIVATE our thinking so that we can be protected from these other things coming to drag us away.
Paul, noting the struggle, encouraged…
“(4) For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments (5) and EVERY LOFTY OPINION raised against the knowledge of God, and TAKE EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE TO OBEY CHRIST,” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 ESV)
May the Word of Christ be so instilled within us that we cannot be dragged away from Him or the truth. For us to remain safe and on the right track, whatever does not fit with the truth of Jesus needs to be rejected. Let us continue to be CAPTIVATED by His life and teaching.
Have a great day CONQUERED BY THE MIND OF CHRIST!

Reluctance!
Reluctance is an unwillingness, lack of enthusiasm, or resistance to do something and it may be experienced due to feelings of fear or inadequacy. Can we relate? How many times have we felt its drag to our movement? How many times have we encountered its glue under our feet? How many times have we experienced its shackles on our hands? How many times have we sensed its tape across our lips?
Reluctance is not new. The Bible records the life of many reluctant servants of God. In fact, we might be surprised how much God was able to accomplish through these reluctant ones. There was Moses who offered excuse after excuse about why he was not the best man for the job (Exodus 3:11 - 4:13), but he did go and we know the rest of the story. Jonah was another reluctant servant who at first went the opposite direction (Jonah 1:3) before God finally gained his attention and got him to deliver His warning to Nineveh, a city that did repent. When Isaiah was called to be God’s spokesman, Isaiah viewed himself as a “man of unclean lips” living “in the midst of a people of unclean lips” (Isaiah 6:5), but when cleansed (Isaiah 6:6-7) he was willing to be sent (Isaiah 6:8) by God.
When Jeremiah was called by God, note his reluctant response as well.
“Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SPEAK, for I AM ONLY A YOUTH.’” (Jeremiah 1:6 ESV)
How often have we wondered, “Who am I to be involved in any work of God?” Do we view God’s call reluctantly as we consider ourselves too young (or too old) or just plain too timid? I don’t know how old Jeremiah may have been, but he obviously did not see the necessary ability within himself for the calling he received. He saw himself as too young for the job. Certainly there was someone older God could call upon. He also did not consider himself to be a good orator. There must have been some other individual more suited to fulfill this mission.
“What am I to say?” “I don’t know what to say to people.” How many times have we asked such questions? There may be all kinds of subjects of which we talk at length with others while we experience great reluctance in talking about the message that matters most?
Note God’s encouragement to Jeremiah.
“(7) But the Lord said to me, ‘DO NOT SAY, ‘I AM ONLY A YOUTH’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. (8) Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.’ (9) Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I HAVE PUT MY WORDS IN YOUR MOUTH.’” (Jeremiah 1:7-9 ESV)
It is not necessarily talented bodies, but rather willing bodies God is able and desiring to use. We are not to focus so much on our own words or our own abilities. If we do, then we have every reason to be reluctant. God is the One who brings the adequacy for what He has called us to do. It is HIS WORDS and HIS POWER we need to learn to rely upon. Let us be reluctant regarding our own abilities, but bold with what God has revealed through His Word. The message we share is to be HIS WORDS (1 Peter 4:11) rather than our own message. As we hold out His truth it can stand on its own. Let us continue to keep it in our mouth so that we will have something most beneficial to say.
Have a great day RESISTING FOCUSING ON SELF BY RELYING ON GOD!

Entertaining!
[10/13/2005 “teEn-MAIL”]
ENTERTAINING!
Many like to HOST gatherings in their home. They enjoy selecting and sending out the invitations. They love planning the menu and decorating for the occasion. And those gatherings may all be well attended because they have become known to be a wonderful HOST.
Now, the purpose for HOSTING such gatherings may vary. Time spent with friends in this way is very enjoyable because of interests shared. However, some gatherings are HOSTED for the purpose of impressing others in order to gain (or retain) a good standing in society or a higher ranking in the corporate world.
How much consideration do we give regarding what we choose to HOST in our life? To what do we open the door of our heart and invite in? For what do we spread a table to take what we have prepared?
Note a charge God made through His prophet Isaiah.
“(11) But you who forsake the LORD, who forget my holy mountain, who SET A TABLE FOR FORTUNE and FILL CUPS OF WINE FOR DESTINY, (12) I will destine you to the sword, and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter, because, when I called, you did not answer; when I spoke, you did not listen, but you did what was evil in my eyes and chose what I did not delight in.” (Isaiah 65:11-12 ESV)
“Fortune” and “Destiny” were apparently foreign gods to whom some of God’s people had turned rather than to Him. What telling names when we consider the focus of some today. How many people spread their table to entertain this world’s fortunes? Whatever will provide themselves gain, that is what they will HOST and feed in their life. How many people fill the cups of those who will help them get ahead in life as they work toward their own desired destiny of worldly successes?
We need to be HOST to that in which God delights! Our ears need to be open to Him and His Will. It is in God we are to seek our highest fortune (Matthew 6:20) and most glorious destiny. (1 Peter 1:4) If this is not our aim, then like those to whom Isaiah spoke, the destiny God will bring about will be destruction.
Let us guard against being so sidetracked by the things of this world that we play HOST to the wrong party. HOSTING the desires of God in our life now will provide us the opportunity for eternal celebration to come.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A STANDING INVITATION TO GOD’S DESIRES!

Beyond The Classroom!
In the colleges and universities of our country there are some who have been called “professional students.” These students are referred to as such because they continue year after year to take classes, but never decide on a field in which to major (perhaps continually changing majors) or never move on to take a job where they can apply what they have learned. Learning may be fun and interesting (the time certainly goes better when it is), however, the goal of learning something ought to be for the purpose of APPLYING IT TO LIFE in some way.
This is important to consider as we continue to be students of God’s Word. Our classroom may at times be our bedroom, the kitchen table, an easy chair in the living room, or some other quiet place away from life’s distractions. The classroom should also be regular times of Bible study together with other Christians and taking to heart the message preached from the pulpit. However, it is not enough to simply learn. We must be ready to do something with that knowledge, otherwise we are no better than the “professional student” who never puts to work the knowledge gained.
As the disciples followed Jesus, their classroom seems to have been wherever Jesus was. They observed our Lord’s actions, listened to His teaching, and even received private instruction as they needed clarification from time to time. They were in the process of being prepared for the proclaiming of Christ’s eternal kingdom and leading others into it following the Lord’s ascension back to Heaven. The disciples enjoyed their time with the Great Teacher and they grieved the idea of His departure (note John 16:5-7) and going on without His presence. Nevertheless, they had a mission to take up and the book of Acts records their bold efforts and the success of the kingdom beginning to grow.
Jesus encouraged…
“(24) Everyone then who HEARS THESE WORDS OF MINE AND DOES THEM will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (25) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25 ESV)
Jesus went on to point out the converse of this, describing the great fall of the life of the one who listens without doing. (Matthew 7:26-27) The principles Jesus taught are still to be APPLIED TO LIFE and acted upon. They are wisdom for life. They are practical for daily living. They themselves are life (John 6:63 & 68) when they impact us as they were intended!
James exhorted…
“(22) But BE DOERS OF THE WORD, and NOT HEARERS ONLY, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. (24) For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (25) But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but A DOER WHO ACTS, he WILL BE BLESSED IN his DOING.” (James 1:22-25 ESV)
Perhaps the “real” professional is the one who takes what they have learned and puts it to use. Both Jesus and James implied it is the doers who will be blessed. May that blessing APPLY TO OUR LIFE because we have accepted God’s Word and continually seek the ways to daily APPLY IT IN LIFE!
Have a great day LIVING OUT WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED!

A Good Education!
Getting a good education is important. It is often the experience that learning comes easier at an early age than in later years. Therefore it is important to apply ourselves to the task of learning, being GOOD STUDENTS while receiving instruction. Getting a good solid education is vital to the eventual finding of a good job, being able to live a comfortable life, support a family, and even be of assistance to others in need. The manner in which we approach our learning now can have considerable impact on how things will work out for us in the future. How serious are we about our education?
Though a secular education is important for life in our society today, being GOOD STUDENTS with regard to spiritual matters is of even greater significance since it not only relates to life now, but also to eternity. Our education in spiritual matters is to be a lifelong pursuit. The importance of familiarity with God’s commands was emphasized as a family responsibility for the nation of Israel. (Note Deuteronomy 6:7-9) It ought to be a daily thing for us as well.
Paul warned…
“(3) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears THEY WILL ACCUMULATE FOR THEMSELVES TEACHERS TO SUIT THEIR OWN PASSIONS, (4) and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)
This is good reason for us to be GOOD STUDENTS of the Word, lest we be led astray. The “degree” to which we pursue that knowledge and apply it to our daily lives is of eternal significance. Consider the following degrees we should seek to possess:
A.A. -- Always Amazed (at what God can do with and through us if we let Him)
A.S. -- Assured of Salvation (by remaining in Christ)
B.A. -- Bible Affirmer
B.S. -- Bible Sharer
M.A. -- Master’s Assistant (servant of God)
M.S. -- Master of Service.
M.B.A. -- Master’s Business Activity (being about the Father’s business)
Ph.D. -- Phileo Degree (brotherly love)
D.D. -- Devoted till Death (to God and His Will)
D.D.S. -- Doer of Deeds and Service (all to His glory)
It is the GOOD STUDENTS of God who are the truly enlightened ones. May we faithfully continue the pursuit of His Will, applying His Word in our daily lives as we recognize the “Higher Education” He provides.
Have a great day PREPARING FOR GOD’S HONOR ROLL!

Boundaries!
Some people look at fences and consider their use for keeping things (or people) within while others view their purpose to be that of keeping things (or people) out. Without a well defined and secure boundary there is always the possibility of that which is within wandering outside and that which is outside wandering in. It has been noted that good fences make good neighbors. The principle may also be applied to the making and maintaining of good Christians. Boundaries (whether they be fences, walls or established life rules and values) provide a certain sense of CONTROL by offering guidance and setting limits. They also can instill a feeling of safety or security while providing a sense of freedom of movement within.
Solomon noted…
“A MAN WITHOUT SELF-CONTROL is like a city broken into and left without walls. (Proverbs 25:28 ESV)
What a picture of being left vulnerable! The individual who lacks SELF-CONTROL often has no clue as to what they might find themselves involved in until there are in the midst of it. Also, such individuals frequently open themselves up to having many unhealthy ideas introduced into their life. Just like a city without walls was prone to attack and takeover, the person who lacks SELF-CONTROL is wide open for trouble.
It is necessary to have well defined boundaries to keep the Will of God and His standard from slipping away or being taken from us. We also need strong boundaries to keep other advice and ideologies from breaking through and taking over our thoughts and affections.
Let us make the government within the walls of our life the Sovereignty of God and the walls about us the standards and values He has revealed through His Word. This is the only successful means of warding off the attacks of opposing ideas and worldly issues as well as keeping us from leaving the safe sphere of God’s Will. To lose SELF-CONTROL we may find ourselves at a loss in every way. On the other hand, as we rightfully acknowledge and live within the boundaries He has established for our good, we will eliminate regret in viewing the past and sustain our hope in viewing the future.
Have a great day ENJOYING THE SAFETY WITHIN THE BORDERS OF GOD’S WILL!

The Good Old Days!
Oh, the “good old days”! Do you remember them? Well, if you haven’t referred to them yet, the chances are some day you will use that expression about some period of your life? But is it for real? Were the days of the past really the “good old days”? Isn't it true that at some point a generation will place that label on today? Is everything good today? No! But is everything bad? No! Is not this the truth about the days of the past as well? Will it not also be the truth about the days ahead?
Solomon wrote:
“Say not, ‘WHY WERE THE FORMER DAYS BETTER THAN THESE?’ For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.” (Ecclesiastes 7:10 ESV)
Why is it not wise? Do we really have adequate information of all that has gone before to make such a statement? Also, why long for that which we can’t go back to or have control over?
Often times this sentiment may merely reflect a spirit of discontent. What is taking place during that moment of discontent may then in the future be looked back upon by another as being a part of the “good old days.”
Were the “good old days” really good? Has man’s disposition in the world really changed? Has there ever been a time when there was no struggle? Was there ever a time when life was really easy? All ages have had the good and the bad.
Israel, when complaining in the desert seemed to forget how bad they had had it in Egypt. Note one of the times Israel complained.
“(2) And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, (3) and the people of Israel said to them, ‘Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.’” (Exodus 16:2-3 ESV)
Had they forgotten what it was like to be enslaved? Had they forgotten what it was like to have their children taken from them? God was trying to bless them, but in their impatience all they could think of was going back to another place and time.
What should characterize our focus? This is the life we have. These are the days we have. How are we using them right now? What are we making of them? We know in who’s hands is the future. Are we walking with Him now? Are we glorifying Him with our lives now? Do we see how He is and will bless us?
We may look back on days of the past with fondness for the special events, experiences and people that made a special imprint on our memories. But the greatest is truly yet to come when we move from this life into eternity with our Lord.
Have a great day PREPARING FOR THAT GLORIOUS FUTURE!

Properly Religious!
The scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day were quite religious. In their piety they enjoyed the greetings and respect they received from the people. (i.e. Matthew 23:6-7) However, in the way they embraced and promoted their religion, where were they leading others? Jesus indicated it was not into the kingdom of heaven, but that they were rather shutting people out. (note Matthew 23:13) To be religious is good, but to be so in accordance with the truth and in genuineness. Someone has said, “Be sure that religion cannot be right which a man is worse for having.” [source: list of “sentence sermons”]
Note the charge Jesus levied against some of these scribes and Pharisees.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, YOU MAKE HIM TWICE AS MUCH A CHILD OF HELL AS YOURSELVES.” (Matthew 23:15 ESV)
Oh, yes, they were zealous in their religion, willing to travel over land and sea to convert another, but to what? Jesus implied the conversions were for worse rather than BETTER. Though these leaders had a great respect for the Law of God, they did not always apply it as God intended. They were also guilty of adding their own teachings and traditions and binding these on others. (Matthew 15:7-9; Mark 7:6-9)
We need to guard against these same tendencies today. What God has commanded we ought to do and what He has revealed we ought to teach. When we go beyond that (note 1 Corinthians 4:6), how can we expect the outcome God desires? God’s truth, as it is, is what will bring right changes to life for the BETTERMENT of ourselves. He has revealed His Will to promote righteousness and good things for this life and for eternity. Remember we are not to be leading others to ourselves or our own ideas, but rather to God. May the message we receive, share, and live out in our life remain His!
Have a great day ZEALOUS FOR THE WILL OF GOD!

Familiarity
We are most comfortable with that with which we are most familiar. We can also be at ease when we are with another who is either familiar with an area or situation we are in. We might ask another, “Do you know how to get there?” and they might respond, “I know this area LIKE THE PALM OF MY HAND.”
The PALMS OF OUR HANDS are ever before us. It is a good picture for that which is most familiar to us. As we pick up things and do various tasks, the PALMS OF OUR HANDS are right in front of us. We see them every day.
Note the following description God gave for His familiarity with His people Israel.
“(15) Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. (16) Behold, I HAVE ENGRAVED YOU ON THE PALMS OF MY HANDS; your walls are continually before me.” (Isaiah 49:15-16 ESV)
Pictured here was a description of a mother’s love and the declaration of God’s perfect love that would never forget His people. They are engraved on the PALMS OF HIS HANDS and therefore are ever before Him.
Perhaps when we have something to remember and have no paper on which to write it, we will make a note on the PALM OF OUR HAND. (Please note I am not referring to notes for cheating.) Unlike a slip of paper, our hand will not fall out of our pocket. Nor do we have to grip it tightly to keep this note from slipping away. Aren’t we encouraged by the fact God always remembers those who are His?
Paul encouraged regarding God’s familiarity when he wrote…
“But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘THE LORD KNOWS THOSE WHO ARE HIS,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.’” (2 Timothy 2:19 ESV)
The Lord knows! He is familiar! We are not strangers to Him! Though others might forget, He will not! May we ever remain His!
Have a great day KNOWING WE ARE INTIMATELY KNOWN BY GOD!

Person Perspective!
As we look around ourselves it is far too easy to jump to the wrong conclusions based upon the appearance or social status of individuals. Someone has said, “Prejudice is a great time-saver. It enables one to form opinions without bothering to get the facts.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] Do we ever find ourselves stereotyping individuals? Do we want others to do the same toward us? Have we ever drawn the wrong conclusions simply because we did not bother to get the FACTS?
James exhorted…
“(1) My brothers, SHOW NO PARTIALITY as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. (2) For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, (3) and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ while you say to the poor man, ‘You stand over there,’ or, ‘Sit down at my feet,’ (4) have you not then made DISTINCTIONS AMONG YOURSELVES AND BECOME JUDGES WITH EVIL THOUGHTS?” (James 2:1-4 ESV)
James addressed the problem as even existing among brethren in the church. Others were being classified and treated according to how they were perceived rather than all being treated alike, as brethren. When this occurs the reality is that some will tend to be highly esteemed while others will be looked down upon.
What are some FACTS we ought to bear in mind?
1. All are made in the likeness of God. (James 3:9)
2. All (including ourselves) are in need of repentance and forgiveness. (i.e. Romans 3:9)
3. The welfare of each soul is valued by God. (i.e. Luke 15:7)
4. We do not have the insight into the heart that God does. (1 Samuel 16:7)
5. To show partiality is to “become judges with evil thoughts!” (James 2:4)
Each of these FACTS should cause us to be careful regarding our perspective of others.
James went on to state…
“(8) If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF,” you are doing well. (9) But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.” (James 2:8-9 ESV)
If we are convicted by a genuine love for others we will be less likely to be convicted of transgressing the commands of God. We know how we wish to be treated. Should we not treat others in the same manner? May we always bear in mind the mercy God has extended toward us and the hope He holds out to all mankind. Treating others in a way that helps them recognize their value in the eyes of God may be the first step in drawing them into a right relationship with Him.
Have a great day TRYING TO SEE OTHERS THROUGH THE LOVE OF GOD!

God's Love!
God’s love has been powerfully displayed and graciously expressed. Out of love for lost humanity He sent His son to provide the means of eternal life. (John 3:16) The graciousness of God’s love is revealed in the fact “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) In fact, God is the One Who first got this thing called love going. (1 John 4:19) If God could be summed up in a word, love would be a good one, as John stated, “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Where would we be if it were not for the love of God?
There are many who like to focus on the love of God as if that were the only characteristic of His Being. Certainly the love of God ought to encourage us and powerfully compel us to draw near to Him with a desire to please Him. One powerful influence of love is that of driving out fear (1 John 4:18) and God has revealed His Will to us so that we can approach the day of judgment with confidence. (1 John 4:17) However, the truth there is such a day reveals that though God loves very freely and graciously, He expects His Will to be taken seriously. If, as some suppose, God in His love would punish no one, why has God continually warned through His Word of the need for preparation and repentance?
After Jude warned of judgment on false teachers and on those who indulged in sexual immorality and the fact God would execute judgment on all the ungodly, convicting them of their ungodly deeds, He exhorted…
“(20) But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; (21) KEEP YOURSELVES IN THE LOVE OF GOD, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.” (Jude 20-21 ESV)
The urging to REMAIN IN the love of God implies His love can be departed from. That in itself is a warning to not take the love of God for granted or take it as freedom to do whatever we please. God’s love is more powerful than our sins. However, just as Paul asked, “Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?” and then emphatically stated, “By no means!” (Romans 6:1-2) -- for us to not strive to please God is to have a lack of appreciation for His love.
John noted…
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and WHOEVER ABIDES IN LOVE ABIDES IN GOD, AND GOD ABIDES IN HIM.” (1 John 4:16 ESV)
Have we truly come to know and believe the love of God? Do we genuinely appreciate the salvation God has lovingly provided? Then let us live in a manner that clearly declares we do! REMAINING IN His love we have a future of which we can live in eager anticipation because, through the loving provision of the Son Jesus Christ, we have been delivered from the wrath of God. (1 Thessalonians 1:10)
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE TRUTH OF GOD’S LOVE!

Concentration Needed!
Our minds work so quickly that it is easy for our thoughts to be somewhere other than on what they ought to be focusing at the present. How often have we found ourselves watching something without really taking it in? The eyes might have been glued to the activity, but the mind was a million miles away. How many times has someone spoken to us and we heard them, but what was being said did not register in our mind? How frequently have we read a paragraph or two only to realize not a word of it could be remembered because the mind had drifted somewhere else? Perhaps this is the challenge as a school day wears on sitting in class after class with so much to absorb. However, the challenge doesn’t necessarily get easier as we grow older. All this can happen on the job or at home or just about anywhere, including church services. Deliberate concentration is needed to PAY ATTENTION and we would do well to put forth the effort.
In my personal reading yesterday morning I was struck by the following charge against Israel during the time of Isaiah.
“(18) Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see! (19) Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the Lord? (20) He SEES many things, BUT DOES NOT OBSERVE them; his EARS ARE OPEN, BUT he DOES NOT HEAR.” (Isaiah 42:18-20 ESV)
Can we relate? I have looked at things without really taking note of the them. I have heard what has been said while being guilty of not really listening. There have been times I’ve responded to my wife with a simple “Uh huh” only to have her ask, “‘Uh huh’ what?” I can’t get by without her knowing I have truly listened.
When we fail to closely look at or listen to what God has revealed and said, we should recognize we are headed for serious trouble. If we are going to ignore Him we might as well be blind and deaf. At least then we might have some excuse, though God knows where the true problem rests. Israel had witnessed proofs of the power of God and His goodness of guidance and provision, but they had not fully taken it or their relationship with Him to heart. To see and hear without perceiving was a severe disability keeping the nation from walking the path of God.
When it comes to the things of God, let us PAY ATTENTION with an undivided heart. It is for our benefit that He have our undivided attention.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A GENUINE INTEREST IN THE THINGS OF GOD!

Breaking Ground!
What would you think if ground was broken for the building of a structure, but the structure was never built? Would you think someone may have begun a work without first counting the cost to see if they were able to finish? (i.e. Luke 14:28-29) Or what would you think if you watched a farmer break ground in his fields; plowing and making long straight furrows as if preparing to plant a crop, but never planted anything? If you saw the farmer plowing the next day and the next and the next would you perhaps think he enjoyed preparing the ground but not planting or reaping?
God, through Isaiah, declared…
“(23) Give ear, and hear my voice; give attention, and hear my speech. (24) DOES HE WHO PLOWS FOR SOWING PLOW CONTINUALLY? DOES HE CONTINUALLY OPEN AND HARROW HIS GROUND? (25) When he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter dill, sow cumin, and put in wheat in rows and barley in its proper place, and emmer as the border? (26) For he is rightly instructed; his God teaches him.” (Isaiah 28:23-26 ESV)
When we consider everything God has begun we should note that He has anticipated FRUIT. What He has done was not just to be doing something, but done with an ultimate purpose in mind. There are often many steps in bringing something to completion, but just as ground is broken in preparation for building a structure and planting a field, so is there an end God has in mind for our having begun to live. That end includes FRUIT; FRUIT that glorifies God. The expectation is not for us to simply continue to make preparation, but for a life to be built and righteous FRUIT to be produced.
The Hebrew writer scolded those to whom he wrote for not having grown. (Hebrews 5:11-13) Though sufficient time had passed, they were still in need of the basics. When we became Christians our life was broken (crucified, Galatians 5:24) as we turned in submission to Christ and the expectation of God is for the FRUIT of the Spirit to be produced in our life. (Galatians 5:22-23) God is able to bring the work He has begun in us to completion. (note Philippians 1:6) May we remain open to being “rightly instructed” by God, allowing Him to teach us that He may receive a harvest in association with the life He has provided for us.
Have a great day WITH RIPENING RIGHTEOUSNESS RISING IN OUR LIFE!

Grace Is Amazing!
GRACE IS AMAZING!
Why is grace amazing? We won't note all there is to consider regarding grace, but consider these 4 points. Then I will share an illustration I received via e-mail.
[1] Grace is not cheap! It cost Jesus His life for our sins on the cross!
“(21) But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it -- (22) the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: (23) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (24) and are JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE AS A GIFT, THROUGH THE REDEMPTION THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS, (25) whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. (26) It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:21-26 ESV)
[2] Grace is not something we can buy or earn! If it was it would not be grace.
“(5) So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. (6) But if it is by grace, it is NO LONGER ON THE BASIS OF WORKS; OTHERWISE GRACE WOULD NO LONGER BE GRACE.” (Romans 11:5-6 ESV)
[3] Grace does not take away our need for activity! God has prepared stuff for us to do!
“(8) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, (9) not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (10) For we are his workmanship, CREATED in Christ Jesus FOR GOOD WORKS, WHICH GOD PREPARED BEFOREHAND, THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM.” (Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV)
[4] Grace is not insignificant! It is powerful enough to do what God intended it to do!
“(8) Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. (9) But he said to me, “MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR YOU, FOR MY POWER IS MADE PERFECT IN WEAKNESS.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:8-9 ESV)

+ THE LORD'S BASEBALL GAME +
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Bob was caught up in the spirit where he and the Lord stood by to observe a baseball game. The Lord's team was playing Satan's team. The Lord's team was at bat, the score was tied zero to zero, and it was the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs.
They continued to watch as a batter stepped up to the plate whose name was Love. Love swung at the first pitch and hit a single, because Love never fails.
The next batter was named Faith, who also got a single because Faith works with Love.
The next batter up was named Godly Wisdom. Satan wound up and threw the first pitch. Godly Wisdom looked it over and let it pass, because Godly Wisdom does not swing at Satan's pitches.
Ball one. Three more pitches and Godly Wisdom walked, because Godly wisdom never swings at Satan's throws.
The Lord looked at Bob and told him He was now going to bring in His star player. Up to the plate stepped Grace. Bob said he sure did not look like much.
Satan's whole team relaxed when they saw Grace. Thinking he had won the game, Satan wound up and fired his first pitch. To the shock of everyone, Grace hit the ball harder than anyone had ever seen. But Satan was not worried. His center fielder, the Prince of the air, let very few get by. The ball slammed into his glove, hit him on the head, and sent him crashing to the ground; then it continued over the fence for a home run.
The Lord's team won.
The Lord then asked Bob if he knew why Love, Faith, and Godly Wisdom could get on base but could not win the game. Bob answered that he did not know why.
The Lord explained: “If your love, faith and wisdom had won the game you would think you had done it by yourself. Love, faith and wisdom will get you on base, but only My grace can get you home. My grace is the one thing Satan cannot stop.”

Powerful! Amazing Grace! Aren't you glad you're on God's team! He'll get you to home!
Have a great day HANGING IN THERE -- THE GAME’S NOT OVER!

Flighty Words!
It is amazing to watch birds flitting this way and that, appearing to be ready to land, but then fluttering away again. With fascination I have watched barn swallows as they would circle, swoop, dive, shoot up quickly toward the sky and then back down, darting about, but not coming to rest. I’ve even had them circle close to my feet. Sometimes birds fluttering about appear as if they are going to roost, but then suddenly fly away. It is as if they check out the spot and then decide it is not the place to rest.
Solomon encouraged…
“Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, A CURSE THAT IS CAUSELESS DOES NOT ALIGHT.” (Proverbs 26:2 ESV)
Words and statements by others can hurt and hurt deeply. Nevertheless, there are times when we just have to let some statements people make go over our head. People often speak rashly or out of anger. We may not deserve their words and the one who has spoken them may even regret them later. However, there is a certain sense of calm we can retain when we know we are innocent of a groundless charge.
This proverb of Solomon is similar to the English proverb, “Curses, like young chickens, always come home to roost.” There are times when people make misguided judgments and statements or accuse without cause, only to eventually have those words come back on themselves. Such was mentioned in a prayer of David regarding his accusers. (Psalm 109:16-20)
Solomon advised…
“(21) DO NOT TAKE TO HEART ALL THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE SAY, lest you hear your servant cursing you. (22) Your heart knows that many times you have yourself cursed others.” (Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 ESV)
Some things we need to just let go! We know the condition of our relationship to God. We know full well what our motives are as we interact with others. When we have been cursed or wrongly criticized by another, the words (like the birds) may even flit here and there between people for a while, but as we live uprightly the charge will eventually fly away as it is found to be untrue. Because the charge is groundless it will have no place to land.
Have a great day LETTING RIGHTEOUS LIVING ANSWER OUR CRITICS!
