Right To Please!
It has been said, “No man has a right to do as he pleases, except when he pleases to do right.” (Charles Simmons) Simply because God has given us the power of CHOICE does not mean we have the “right” to do whatever we please. To do such is not always the “right” thing! It is also of paramount importance for us to look beyond merely the sphere of our own life as CHOICES are being made.
Paul exhorted…
“(1) We who are strong have an OBLIGATION to BEAR WITH the failings of the weak, and NOT TO PLEASE OURSELVES. (2) Let each of us PLEASE his NEIGHBOR FOR HIS GOOD, to BUILD HIM UP.” ( Romans 15:1-2 ESV)
The Greek word translated “obligation” implies a sense of debt or owing. In other words, we owe it to others to consider their needs. After all, it was our interests Jesus had in mind when He came to this earth and gave Himself for us. In that regard Paul went on to point out that even Christ didn’t seek to please Himself. ( Romans 15:3) Our Lord was driven by a higher focus than personal self-interest. Granted, truth and the righteousness of God are never to be neglected in order to please others. However, consideration of the impact of our CHOICES on the lives of others needs to be taken into consideration even when we have the “right” to do something that is “right”. This is the loving thing to do as we look beyond what might be permissible to that which is truly beneficial. (note 1 Corinthians 10:23-24)
To best keep our focus and CHOICES in line let us do what Paul urged the church at Ephesus when he wrote...
“and try to DISCERN WHAT IS PLEASING TO THE LORD.” ( Ephesians 5:10 ESV)
Pleasing the Lord first and others second will help create an atmosphere that can be beneficial for all involved. May this “right” CHOICE be ours as we seek to share in the peace and unity that can only be found in Christ.
Have a great day ENJOYING THE PLEASURE OF DOING RIGHT!
Carl
