Return To Sender!

To have a letter return marked “Return To Sender” may create some frustration. Having paid the postage, our expectation is that what we mail will arrive at its INTENDED DESTINATION. When a letter is returned the fault may rest with the sender for having incorrectly addressed it or the fault may be the recipient’s for having failed to give notice of a change of address. A letter may also be returned due to lack of sufficient postage. There is a process to be followed if delivery is to be made.

At a crematorium where families are given the opportunity to select the music CD they wish to listen to as they enter the service, a family requested Elvis Presley’s hit, “Love Me Tender.” On the day of the funeral the music was started for the family to enter, but unfortunately the wrong track number was entered into the CD player. The family found themselves walking in to “Return To Sender.” [source: adapted from bulletin clipping]

“Return To Sender!” Would that really be such a bad selection? Consider the idea in relation to what Solomon noted.
“and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and THE SPIRIT RETURNS TO GOD WHO GAVE IT.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7 ESV)

God brought mankind into being and we have been sent into life in this realm for the purpose of glorifying Him as we serve His Will. However, this realm was not intended to be our final DESTINATION. As Jesus came into this world to give His life as a ransom for many and returned to the Father, so it is God’s plan for us that our INTENDED DESTINATION be with Him in Heaven. Jesus personally paid the cost to deliver us from this world to that DESIRABLE DESTINATION. (note Galatians 1:4) May we continue to correctly address God with both our actions and words as we look forward to the day when we will receive an eternal change of address.

Have a great day LIVING PREPARED FOR THAT FINAL DELIVERY!

Planning!

It has been said that to fail to plan is to plan to fail. Without a plan what can be accomplished? Without a plan where will life take us? Those of you who are teens are probably formulating all kinds of plans for the years that may lay ahead. However, it is important to bear in mind that not just any plan will do.

God, through His prophet Isaiah, rebuked His people, saying…
“‘Ah, stubborn children,’ declares the LORD, ‘who CARRY OUT A PLAN, BUT NOT MINE, and who make an alliance, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin; (2) who set out to go down to Egypt, without asking for my direction, to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!” (Isaiah 30:1-2 ESV)

God’s people had planned to find refuge in Egypt rather than seeking protection from God through maintaining a right relationship with Him. Even before the promised land was entered God had warned not to return to Egypt. (i.e. Deuteronomy 17:16) Judah found themselves in trouble time and time again because they ignored GOD’S PLAN and followed their own. Like stubborn children they did not possess a proper perspective regarding what was truly best for themselves. Therefore they added “sin to sin” by first of all not remaining faithful to God and secondly by making plans without due consideration for God’s Will. With one sin leading to another they were moving down the wrong road physically and spiritually.

We too need to be careful in this regard. There are many who devise plans and then expect God to place His stamp of approval on them. We are first to seek what God has in mind. Our plan needs to be first and foremost to follow the PLAN OF GOD. Like the people of Judah, our alliance needs to be with Him, not the world and its ways. It is HIS PLAN and protection we need to recognize as dependable and best.

Solomon noted…
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LORD THAT WILL STAND.” (Proverbs 19:21 ESV)

We may develop lots of plans for this life that will never come to fulfillment. However, GOD’S PLANS and purposes will come about because He has set them in place. To fail to acknowledge the sovereignty of HIS PLAN will cause us to be left out of it. May we maintain our partnership with Him, making HIS PLANS ours!

Have a great day KEEPING THE TRUST IN GOD AND HIS WILL!

Vision To Love!

It has been said that love is blind. This must be true since I have seen so many people stumbling around in love not knowing how to maintain proper relationships. I know the statement about love being blind is generally a reference to a love that is able to accept while overlooking flaws or disregarding another’s race or social status. There is great power in such a pure love. However, there is also a sense in which love helps us SEE MORE CLEARLY to properly express love and act in loving ways.

John wrote…
“(10) WHOEVER LOVES HIS BROTHER ABIDES IN THE LIGHT, and in him there is NO CAUSE FOR STUMBLING. (11) But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” (1 John 2:10-11 ESV)

John asserted it is the lack of love that is blinding. A world without love would be a very dark place. The one who does not know how to properly love does not even know where they are going because of the blinding darkness in which they live. Genuine love helps to keep all relationships in proper perspective, enabling us to SEE MORE CLEARLY and not stumble.

As we look at the life of Jesus we should be able to SEE CLEARLY what genuine love is all about. Also, when the characteristics Paul listed in his letter to the church at Corinth (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) are taken to heart we will be helped to SEE MORE CLEARLY how to love in practical ways that will build up and sustain proper relationships. May we allow God’s concept of love to open our eyes as we daily interact with others.

Have a great day WITH EYES OPENED BY A PURE OPEN HEART!

Place Of Remembrance!

I am always jotting things down on slips of paper. I don’t want to forget. I need reminders. My shirt pocket is sometimes full of little slips of paper which on occasion fall out when I bend over. There are times I will write something down on a little slip of paper only to lose it between or under other things on my desk. That’s why I also love “Post-it”® notes that I can stick up where they will catch my attention. However, even those can come lose and fall out of sight.

Note the following little poem I came across in a recent church bulletin.

LOVE YOU
I wrote your name on a piece of paper, but by accident I threw it away.
I wrote your name on my hand, but it washed away.
I wrote your name in the sand, but the wind whispered it away.
I wrote your name in my heart, and forever it will stay.
[author unknown]

Those words reminded me of the connection Paul made with those with whom he had shared the gospel and labored. Like Christ, Paul appears to have been gifted at making a HEART CONNECTION with others.

To the church at Philippi he wrote…
“(7) It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I HOLD YOU IN MY HEART, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. (8) For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all WITH THE AFFECTION OF CHRIST JESUS.” (Philippians 1:7-8 ESV)

Paul then went on to encourage these Christians to abound more and more in love. Genuine love shared by those who are in Christ creates a powerful pull drawing those HEARTS together. Once someone (or something) is in the HEART it is hard to forget. Even though miles may separate, holding others in the HEART allows the tie to remain unbroken and strong. May the writing in our HEART continue.

Have a great day CONTINUING TO ABOUND MORE IN LOVE!

Not Simply Some Corner!

As Paul was making his defense before Governor Festus and King Agrippa (Acts 26) -- referring to the events which had taken place associated with Jesus and the hope that was in Him -- Paul knew King Agrippa was familiar with much of it because all those things had “not been done in a corner.” (Acts 26:24) There were many witnesses to the ministry of Jesus and His death, burial, and resurrection. The work of the Apostles and the spread of Christianity had also not begun unnoticed. And even though the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus may have begun in Judea, it was the Lord’s plan for it to spread on out from there “to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) The ministry of Jesus clearly revealed His interest in the individual soul, but all He accomplished was with a view beyond a small “corner” of humanity.

As Jesus gave His disciples the great commission, He stated…
“Go therefore and make disciples of ALL NATIONS, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19 ESV)

Prior to Jesus’ ascension back to the Father, He made it clear how far reaching the message of salvation was to be. It was not merely for a few individuals in some “corner” of the world. It was not for one class of society. Nor was it for one nation among the world’s population. It was a message to be taken to ALL NATIONS.

This important truth is also contained in Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats.
“Before him will be gathered ALL THE NATIONS, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” (Matthew 25:32 ESV)

Prior to Jesus’ ascension, He specifically mentioned ALL NATIONS. In this parable focusing on His second coming Jesus also referred to ALL NATIONS. Though our Lord’s public ministry spanned only about three short years and took place in a small region of this world, the significance of the message associated with Him and the salvation only to be found in Him (John 14:6) was for ALL NATIONS. There is the need for the message to go out to ALL NATIONS because there will be an eventual judgment and separation from among ALL NATIONS.

In every “corner” of the world where we live we need to hold out the message of hope in Christ. We should also pray for and support those who are willing to go to other nations to share the Gospel of Jesus. We have members of our congregation who teach others through Bible correspondence courses via mail to people in Africa and other places. As God has opened the door wider and wider for the daily “teEn-MAIL” focuses it has become my privilege to share with others (most of whom I may never meet in this lifetime) across the United States and many foreign countries around the world. I praise God for those who have helped open those doors.

Let us continue to pray for ALL NATIONS and open our lives to the ways in which God can use each one of us even from our own “corner” of this globe. There are ways in which we can all be involved in helping others become prepared for the gathering and separating that will ultimately take place. May we keep the larger picture in view.

Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE BROADER SPECTRUM OF GOD’S PLAN!

Pick'n Those Bones!

Do you like fish? I do! But I remember not caring for it much as I was growing up. It took a while for me to realize why, however. It was not that I didn’t like the taste of fish -- I just didn’t like having to pick out the bones. Eventually I decided the taste of good fish was worth taking time to remove the bones. To eliminate fish from my diet because of those bones was to miss out on some meat that was beneficial to my body and tasty as well.

Paul, writing to the church at Thessalonica, stated:
“(21) but test everything; HOLD FAST WHAT IS GOOD. (22) Abstain from every form of evil.” (I Thessalonians 5:21-22 ESV)

When it comes to some of the things we hear or read, we may often find ourselves struggling with what to accept and what to disregard. It is somewhat like eating fish. Eat the meat, but throw the bones away! Test it all to see how it fits with what God has revealed to us in His Word and be nourished by that which is good and sound teaching while throwing away or putting aside the rest.

I have a lot of books in my personal library that contain ideas that are not Biblically sound. However, these volumes contain some things that nourish and uplift my spirit. Therefore, based upon God’s Word I hold to what is good and toss the rest. I would miss out on some great concepts if I rejected those books completely because of the “bones”. Aside from those “bones” the “meat” is beneficial in my study.

Spend time in God’s word so you will be able to recognize the meat and not choke on any bones. Test everything and hold to the good. You will be blessed.

Have a great day NOURISHED IN YOUR PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE!

Ready To Retire?

“If you don’t want to work you have to work to earn enough money so that you won’t have to work.” [Ogden Nash]

If you’re like me, you might have to read that statement a couple of times for it to sink in and make sense. Aside from receiving a large inheritance or winning a lottery (which for me would be a miracle since I have never bought a ticket) there is no way of getting around the need to work. However, if one works hard enough and long enough it is possible to retire at even an early age and then be able to sit back and enjoy a life of ease. Is that your goal for life?

Many people anxiously look forward to retirement. Perhaps some of these do so even before they have hardly begun to work. Then there are those who retire and have such difficulty figuring out what to do with their time they find another job. Still others become so fed up with the world around them they want to retire from life itself.

It is important to find something meaningful to do with our life. Without a sense of purpose, why live? Are we consciously seeking to find how whatever we do is linked to our relationship with God and what He has in mind for eternity?

As Solomon looked at life even in a general sense, he stated…
“(24) There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, (25) for APART FROM HIM WHO CAN EAT OR WHO CAN HAVE ENJOYMENT?” (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25)

Young and old alike, we must bear in mind the ways in which our labors are to glorify God. Though the day may come for us to retire from whatever employment we have taken up, that is not to be the case with regard to the EMPLOYMENT OF SELF IN SPIRITUAL MATTERS. Our SPIRITUAL LABOR is to continue because now is the time for such since there is a night coming when no one can work. (John 9:4)

What about retirement? The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(9) So then, THERE REMAINS A SABBATH REST for the people of God, (10) for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. (11) LET US THEREFORE STRIVE TO ENTER THAT REST, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4:9-11)

Let us continue to labor on in WORKS FOR THE LORD, knowing He will provide the time of rest. As long as we live in this realm our WORK FOR THE LORD is to continue. May we find fulfillment in carrying on HIS WORK with a view toward the retirement benefits God will ultimately provide that will truly be out of this world!

Being Fully Prepared!

Tomorrow (Saturday, September 24) is our ladies’ 25th Annual Ladies Fellowship. Helping the ladies prepare for their special day, many from the congregation gathered last Saturday to do some extra clean-up in and around the church building. People came ARMED with pruners, saws, shovels, rakes, dusters, cleaning supplies, and coffee and donuts; all the things we needed to do battle with hanging tree limbs, garden shrubs, dust, and dirty windows.

Being prepared to tackle particular tasks is often more than possessing the right equipment for the job. We also need to consider our mindset. All the right tools can be readily available, but without a resolve or willingness to stick to what needs to be done, complete success may not be realized.

Peter exhorted…
“(1) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, ARM YOURSELVES WITH THE SAME WAY OF THINKING, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (2) so as to LIVE FOR THE REST OF THE TIME in the flesh no longer for human passions but FOR THE WILL OF GOD.” (1 Peter 4:1-2 ESV)

Jesus came prepared to do a mighty work; providing the means for the salvation of souls. As He walked this earth Jesus was opposed. He was rejected. He was mocked. Nevertheless He came ARMED with a mindset to press on in victory over His foes -- including the devil. It was that mindset which maintained our Lord’s resolve of “not My will, but Yours be done” (i.e. Matthew 26:39) as He focused on the Father’s plan. Are we ARMED for life in the same manner?

We may be able to quote a lot of Scripture or have our Bibles handy to defend our faith. The Truth of Jesus and the promises of God may be impressed deep upon our mind. We may also acknowledge the power of God available to assist us through this life’s challenges. However, this must be accompanied by a mindset to persevere regardless of what we face. Like Christ, as we live “for the will of God”, we must ARM ourselves with the same resolve to press on regardless of those who oppose the truth of God, reject His standards for life, and mock us for living different than the ways of the world. Such is the path to success in Christ. May we steadfastly remain in it.

Have a great day EQUIPPED IN CHRIST FOR VICTORIOUS LIVING!

Dust To Glory!

Through the centuries men have made monuments and other structures heralded to be glorious that in time have been left in a heap of dust. As great as the accomplishments of men and women may have been through the ages, we must always keep in perspective that which is of lasting significance. There is far too much emphasis on what is fleeting while that which is lasting is either completely ignored or put off for some other moment.

We ought to be encouraged that our God does not need much to bring about that which is of lasting significance. As God brought all things into existence when He created this world and the universe in which we live, when He came to the crowning point of His creation -- the part that was to bear His image (Genesis 1:27) -- with what did He begin? Was it silver? Was it gold? Was it stone that could weather the storms of this realm? No!

We read…
“(7) then the LORD GOD FORMED THE MAN OF DUST FROM THE GROUND and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7 ESV)

In the beginning man was created from the dust of the earth to possess the image of God and that life has continued on in the frailty of the flesh. However, that is not the extent of what God had in mind. God’s desire has always been to ultimately EXALT us in our humility and that humility must be retained for God to do the EXALTING. (i.e. James 4:6-10 & 1 Peter 5:5-6) As we continue to submit to Him He will bring about the glory He had in mind from the beginning.

When we have surrendered our life to Christ, note what Paul stated is to come.
“(3) For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (4) When Christ who is your life appears, THEN YOU ALSO WILL APPEAR WITH HIM IN GLORY.” (Colossians 3:3-4 ESV)

From dust to glory! Only God can bring about a work such as that. May we humbly submit to Him so that He will make it happen.

Have a great day LOOKING TO THE SIGNIFICANCE GOD PROVIDES!

Glimmer In The Midst Of Gloom!

Even when things are not going well, if we can at least see some light at the end of the tunnel or a glimmer of hope through the thick of the gloom, we can find encouragement to press on. God expects His Will to be taken seriously. To disregard His Will leads toward eternal condemnation. However, just like in our Lord’s parable of the lost son (Luke 15) the Heavenly Father is eager to receive again, those who are willing to return home. (Luke 15:20-24)

Jeremiah was a prophet of God during a time when the people were not very receptive to following the Will of God nor turning wholeheartedly back to Him. This prophet has been referred to as the “weeping prophet” and to read through the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations it is easy to see why. It may amaze us that as rebellious as God’s people became time and time again He continued to hold to His promises for the future and extend a gracious hope to those who would return to a right relationship with Him.

We also need to recognize that as bad as it may get in this world today or even as far off track as we might personally become, God continues to hold out the hope of FORGIVENESS to those who will turn back to Him. As long as there is life, there is hope! (note Ecclesiastes 9:4) While Jeremiah called for repentance and delivered God’s warnings of coming desolation and captivity, he also offered glimpses of hope with regard to the remnant God would preserve.

One of the glimmers of light in the midst of a message of doom for a rebellious people is a wonderful picture of the FORGIVENESS of God. Following Israel being referred to as a “hunted sheep driven away by lions” (Jeremiah 50:17) -- this at the hand of Assyria and then Babylon who would also receive the punishment they were due -- God revealed through Jeremiah that a time of restoration was coming.

We read…
“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, INIQUITY SHALL BE SOUGHT in Israel, and THERE SHALL BE NONE. And SIN in Judah, and NONE SHALL BE FOUND, for I WILL PARDON those whom I leave as a remnant.” (Jeremiah 50:20 ESV)

What a wonderful picture of God’s FORGIVENESS; to be viewed as though the sin were not there. How refreshing! How uplifting! How gracious and merciful our God is! However, His willingness to FORGIVE should not be taken for granted. Rather, we ought to respond to such hope in true penitence with a sincere resolve to wholeheartedly draw near to God and walk daily in accordance with His Will.

In the New Testament, the Hebrew writer (quoting from Jeremiah 31:34) encouraged…
“(17) then he adds, ‘I will REMEMBER their sins and their lawless deeds NO MORE.’ (18) Where there IS FORGIVENESS of these there is NO LONGER ANY OFFERING FOR SIN.” (Hebrews 10:17-18 ESV)

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for our sins is adequate to take them away. (Hebrews 10:12) May we continue to walk in Him in order to continue receiving the powerful benefit of His blood. (1 John 1:7) As long as there is life, there is hope! Let us remain turned toward God and accept the gracious gifts He offers.

Have a great day KNOWING THE POWER OF GOD’S PARDON!

The Right Match

We have varying experiences in life that prompt personal reactions. Often we may genuinely feel our response to be a good match for how we have been treated. When we get jabbed our first inclination may be to jab back. When we are struck we generally feel compelled to strike back. However, tit for tat and responding to even the score most commonly escalates rather than serving to help solve the conflict. What is needful is for us to look beyond the reaction of the moment to the ACTION that will truly benefit others, as well as ourselves, in the long run.

Peter exhorted…
“Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, BLESS, for to this you were called, THAT YOU MAY OBTAIN A BLESSING.” (1 Peter 3:9 ESV)

The Christians to whom Peter wrote were experiencing persecution. Such treatment can naturally produce a variety of reactions. Rather than a reaction, Peter simply pointed to our choice of ACTION. What he encouraged toward was not reacting in kind, but instead ACTING in a positive manner so as to hopefully obtain something more positive in the end.

Consider three levels on which life could be lived. There are those who return evil for good. This is the rebellious spirit of the devil and all who would oppose the righteousness and truth of God. Then there are those who are willing to return good for good, but will also return evil for evil. Reacting with like for like is often characteristic of a world that follows the rule, “Do to others ‘as’ they have done unto you.” However, the level we have been Divinely called to is that of returning good for evil. This is the spirit Jesus insisted is to be exhibited in our life (Matthew 5:44-45) and the ACTION Paul stressed in his letter to the church at Rome. (Romans 12:14, 20-21) To ACT according to the righteousness of God rather than reacting in kind may not always be easy. It may not even be our first inclination. Nevertheless, it is the right thing in the eyes of God and is a powerful means of revealing we live according to a much higher standard (and wisdom) than that of this world.

Let us learn to focus on the powerful potential our own right ACTIONS may provide. To treat others in a manner that would bless their life in spite of the way they treat us has the potential to touch their heart so as to have a desire to bring blessing to us. However, even if our choice of right ACTIONS does not change the heart or behavior of others, we will ultimately receive our blessing from God for having upheld His standard. May our ACTIONS not merely be contingent on what others do (that gives them control over us), but continually based on our decision to do what is right in the eyes of God.

Have a great day MEETING OTHERS ACTIONS GOD’S WAY!

Standing By!

When it comes to “standing by”, some do so simply to watch what happens while others stand by to offer help and support that may be needed. What marks the character of a TRUE FRIEND? Someone has said, “A friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] There are some situations in life where it becomes very evident who our TRUE FRIENDS are. Friends may come and go in life. Perhaps some even feel like a revolving door with people coming into their life and going right back out. Anyone come in to stay?

Solomon noted…
“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but THERE IS A FRIEND WHO STICKS CLOSER THAN A BROTHER.” (Proverbs 18:24 ESV)

The friends who walk out are generally those who seek friendships in order to gain something for themselves. When these stop getting they get up and leave. The friends who abide are those who are willing to consider the best interests of others with a genuine desire to help. In such relationships the benefit generally becomes mutual. We each have our times of need for encouragement or other assistance and then there are the times we are presented the opportunity to extend such. That is the power that works among TRUE FRIENDS.

Do we have friends we can count on? Are we the type of friend who walks out or remains through thick and thin? Having one close TRUE FRIEND can prove better than many mere acquaintances. In some cases a TRUE FRIEND may even be found to stick closer than family.

Let us seek to be the kind of TRUE FRIEND we also wish to have and need. The first part of the above verse in the New King James Version (with KJV similarly translated) reads, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly….” As we genuinely extend friendship we will find it will also come to us.

Have a great day BLESSED BY THE POWER OF TRUE FRIENDSHIP!

Quantity vs. Quality!

There are times when someone will admit they have not given much time (quantity) to something, but will try to validate what they have done by referring to whatever time was put in was “quality time.” Then there is the other side of this when someone might focus on the amount (quantity) of time spent on something to counter the lack of quality. Do such actions always balance out the acceptableness of one’s actions? Not in all situations. One is not always an adequate substitute for the other. Consider one area associated with our spiritual life.

At a time when Israel’s heart was not rightly focused on God, we read…
“When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even THOUGH YOU MAKE MANY PRAYERS, I WILL NOT LISTEN; your hands are full of blood.” (Isaiah 1:15 ESV)

Though apparently guilty of grievous sin the people of Judah and Jerusalem (Isaiah 1:1) seemed to think the quantity of their PRAYERS would make things all right. They saw themselves as being on speaking terms with God, however, God was not listening because of the lack of quality in their spiritual lives. Their “many PRAYERS” did not make up for the lack of a right relationship with God and His Will.

Jesus addressed this similarly when He stated…
“And WHEN YOU PRAY, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for THEY THINK THAT THEY WILL BE HEARD FOR THEIR MANY WORDS.” (Matthew 6:7 ESV)

Our Lord noted those who lifted up “many words” (quantity), but the quality was “empty phrases” and thus unacceptable before God. Does it appear God’s expectation has always been the same? Our PRAYERS may be of few words or many, but what about the quality of our heart in approaching God and seeking His Will? Is it what He desires it to be? Many PRAYERS or many words are no substitute for a heart genuinely seeking to sustain a close walk with God.

May we, like the psalmist David, strive to maintain the attitude of…
“Let the WORDS OF MY MOUTH and the MEDITATION OF MY HEART be ACCEPTABLE IN YOUR SIGHT, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14 ESV)

Have a great day OFFERING ACCEPTABLE PRAYER TO GOD!

Right To Please!

It has been said, “No man has a right to do as he pleases, except when he pleases to do right.” (Charles Simmons) Simply because God has given us the power of CHOICE does not mean we have the “right” to do whatever we please. To do such is not always the “right” thing! It is also of paramount importance for us to look beyond merely the sphere of our own life as CHOICES are being made.

Paul exhorted…
“(1) We who are strong have an OBLIGATION to BEAR WITH the failings of the weak, and NOT TO PLEASE OURSELVES. (2) Let each of us PLEASE his NEIGHBOR FOR HIS GOOD, to BUILD HIM UP.” (Romans 15:1-2 ESV)

The Greek word translated “obligation” implies a sense of debt or owing. In other words, we owe it to others to consider their needs. After all, it was our interests Jesus had in mind when He came to this earth and gave Himself for us. In that regard Paul went on to point out that even Christ didn’t seek to please Himself. (Romans 15:3) Our Lord was driven by a higher focus than personal self-interest. Granted, truth and the righteousness of God are never to be neglected in order to please others. However, consideration of the impact of our CHOICES on the lives of others needs to be taken into consideration even when we have the “right” to do something that is “right”. This is the loving thing to do as we look beyond what might be permissible to that which is truly beneficial. (note 1 Corinthians 10:23-24)

To best keep our focus and CHOICES in line let us do what Paul urged the church at Ephesus when he wrote...
“and try to DISCERN WHAT IS PLEASING TO THE LORD.” (Ephesians 5:10 ESV)

Pleasing the Lord first and others second will help create an atmosphere that can be beneficial for all involved. May this “right” CHOICE be ours as we seek to share in the peace and unity that can only be found in Christ.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE PLEASURE OF DOING RIGHT!

Not Gonna Do It!

Stubbornness can create some real challenges. Sometimes one cannot be encouraged to do what is right because of a stubborn will that refuses to give in. Progress is often slowed by stubbornness to accept new ideas or needed change. Stubbornness also causes some to be unable to admit when they have been wrong. However, there is a power in stubbornness which may perhaps work to our advantage and the advantage of others when it is associated with the right thing.

Paul exhorted…
“Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather DECIDE NEVER TO PUT A STUMBLING BLOCK OR HINDRANCE IN THE WAY OF A BROTHER.” (Romans 14:13 ESV)

The context in which Paul was writing dealt with quarreling over opinions or disputable matters (Romans 14:1) and the relationship between weak and strong brethren. The impact our actions have on one another is to be given serious consideration. The stubborn resolve Paul urged was that of DECIDING TO NEVER place anything in the way of a brother that would either cause them to stumble or hinder their spiritual progress. This needs to be our FIRM DECISION as we value one another within the Body of Christ, the church. The world throws enough stumbling blocks our way, why should we do it to one another? Let us stubbornly make up our mind that we are “not gonna do it!” It is to be the conclusion we have drawn with respect to how we relate to one another.

God takes a very serious view toward those who cause others to stumble. (note Matthew 18:6) Instead, may we always strive to edify (build up) and encourage one another toward greater faith and a resolve to live according to God’s desires rather than pushing our own. Let us DECIDE to keep leading in the right path and help remove the obstacles that might be there for those who follow.

Have a great day HELPING OTHERS IN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS!

Wisdom In Taking The Time!

Wisdom. We all need it. Without it life is tougher. Certainly there are difficult things which must be done and great effort is worth being expended. However, wisdom in approaching even these tasks can make them less of a burden.

Solomon noted in his investigation of life…
“If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but WISDOM HELPS ONE TO SUCCEED.” (Ecclesiastes 10:10 ESV)

Have you ever tried to split wood with a dull ax or cut a board with a dull saw? A lot more energy is expended than if the blade of the ax or the teeth of the saw were sharpened. It seems the wise thing to do would be to take the time in the FIRST PLACE to sharpen them, making the task go much easier and quicker.

There have been a number of times I have decided to quickly trim a few of our roses. I have grabbed the pruners, but considering I was just going to trim a few, have not taken the time to go get some gloves. Usually the result has been that I have gotten a thorn stuck in a finger and found it took longer to remove the thorn than it would have taken to have gotten some gloves in the FIRST PLACE. Am I gaining wisdom?

I also remember trying to dig holes to replace several cedar fence posts along our driveway. Digging with a shovel, I found it difficult to keep the holes from being too wide, partially because I was so close to the concrete slab on which we park. After spending the energy and time digging one hole, I decided I needed the right tool for the job. I went and purchased a posthole digger and dug three more holes in less than the time I had spent digging the first. I should have taken the time to get the right tool in the FIRST PLACE. Am I gaining wisdom?

We have busy schedules. We look at our calendars for the day and see so many things listed on our “to do” lists. So many appointments. So many tasks to be accomplished. Do we find ourselves just launching into it all and then wonder at our feelings of being disorganized and getting frazzled? As the urgent cries for our attention, sometimes the important is missed. Wisdom is needed to prioritize our day. Perhaps it often boils down to having not been wise enough to take the time to do what we should have done in the FIRST PLACE; PRAY!

Even our Lord gave us the example of beginning the day in such a manner.
“(35) And RISING VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there HE PRAYED. (36) And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, (37) and they found him and said to him, ‘Everyone is looking for you.’” (Mark 1:35-37)

Perhaps Simon Peter and the others thought Jesus should have been busy about His urgent business; that which Jesus Himself acknowledged He had come to do. (Mark 1:38) What they needed to learn was the importance of putting in FIRST PLACE time spent in prayerful preparation. May we also remember that even with pressing priorities, PRAYER is the PLACE TO BEGIN. Such will sharpen our focus on the reliance on God’s strength for the day, help prune away some of the anxiety otherwise associated with the tasks before us, and help keep the truly important stuff in view.

Have a great day FINDING SUCCESS THROUGH BEGINNING RIGHT!

What's A Picture Worth?

It has often been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Perhaps some speak even more. Pictures can be very impressionable. They are often able to convey what words cannot. Many of us have no doubt been touched beyond words as we have seen pictures of the neighborhoods and towns devastated by hurricane Katrina. Some of these images speak volumes. We may have also seen pictures of people affected by those forces of wind and water and the looks on their faces tell more than words can express. It is easy for these images to become fixed in our minds.

When we consider the power of images left in the minds of others, what kind of picture does the EXAMPLE of our life communicate? It is so true that actions speak louder than words. Is there a consistency between what we say and the message our EXAMPLE conveys? What images do our actions impress upon the minds of others?

Paul exhorted the young evangelist Timothy…
“Let no one despise you for your youth, but SET the believers AN EXAMPLE IN SPEECH, in CONDUCT, in LOVE, in FAITH, in PURITY.” (1 Timothy 4:12 ESV)

Should that only be the expectation for preachers? Certainly it ought to be the expectation for the elders who shepherd the church and the deacons and others who serve in a teaching capacity. However, should not all of us strive to be EXAMPLES in each of those areas as we interact with our brothers and sisters within the church as well as being our general conduct in life? The thing we must realize is whether we like it or not we will be an EXAMPLE for someone. Others are watching. Someone will be influenced by the actions they see. What is the picture being left in their mind?

Speech! Conduct! Love! Faith! Purity! May we be mindful of the EXAMPLE we are setting in each of these areas. The life EXEMPLIFYING these as God would have it has the potential to leave in the mind of others an image that will speak volumes regarding God’s Wisdom and Way. May we constantly recognize the potential to have an impressionable impact on the lives of others.

Have a great day PRESENTING A PRAISEWORTHY PORTRAIT!

Facing Truth!

What a different world we would live in if everyone lived by the same RULES. We know this is important in the game of football and other sports, otherwise the game would be utter chaos. Should this not be even more important when it comes to life? What a difference it would make if everyone accepted the PRINCIPLES contained in the Bible! What harmony, peace, mutual benefit, etc., would be experienced! However, because everyone does not hold the same values or live by the same PRINCIPLES it is no wonder individuals constantly find themselves on a collision course with others.

Someone has stated, “Many do not want the Bible to be true, because its teachings condemn their practices.” [source: sentence sermons] Quite often God’s Word is not rejected because of a lack of seeing it is good and right, but because of an unwillingness to admit one’s own actions are wrong and thus in need of a change. Such is an attitude Jesus acknowledged when He walked the face of this earth.

Jesus said…
“(19) And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people LOVED THE DARKNESS RATHER THAN THE LIGHT because their deeds were evil. (20) For EVERYONE WHO DOES WICKED THINGS HATES THE LIGHT AND DOES NOT COME TO THE LIGHT, LEST HIS DEEDS SHOULD BE EXPOSED.” (John 3:19-20 ESV)

When we read the Scriptures and are willing to acknowledge them as truth we must recognize we are facing some absolutes. Do we face the truth or turn away from it?

Jesus went on to state…
“(21) But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God.” (John 3:21 ESV)

May we keep our face toward the truth as we continue to turn away from that which is contrary to the Sovereign Will of God. Living in the Light of the Son we will be able to see how good and right His enduring PRINCIPLES are. And in the end it is His call as life’s referee that counts.

Have a great day WINNING AT LIFE BY GOD’S RULES!

Sphere Of Interest!

Many people are geared to speak their mind and if they have the opportunity you can bet they will do it. They will stand up for what they want and cry out until they get it. They will be persistent. They will not give up. What they want they want now and if they don’t get it they will keep on pursuing it until they wear down the one (or ones) who have the power to give it.

Reading through the last chapter of Proverbs, perhaps we have most often been drawn to consider the description of the godly woman focused on in the last twenty-two verses. However, as I read through this chapter recently I was struck by two verses which preceded this section.

We read…
“(8) Open your mouth FOR THE MUTE, for the RIGHTS OF all who are DESTITUTE. (9) Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the RIGHTS OF THE POOR AND NEEDY.” (Proverbs 31:8-9 ESV)

What a great contrast there generally is between the pursuit of what one personally wants (or even needs) and what effort is expended on behalf of OTHERS. Are we so focused on our own lives that we forget about OTHERS’ needs? Have we drawn the sphere of our interests so tight that there is only enough room for consideration of self?

Speaking on behalf of OTHERS! “What’s in it for me?”, some may ask. That question does not even come close to the Christ-like attitude we, as Christians, have been called to emulate. To act and speak on behalf of those who cannot for themselves is a righteous (not self-righteous) thing to do. Remember how Jesus went to bat (so to speak) for the downcast and outcast of the society of that day. He also did it for us by providing the means of salvation from our sins. Do we recognize our need and the fact there is One Who speaks for us?

Paul encouraged…
“(33) Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. (34) Who is to condemn? CHRIST JESUS is the one who died -- more than that, who was raised -- who is at the right hand of God, WHO INDEED IS INTERCEDING FOR US.” (Romans 8:33-34)

As we live appreciating the One Who speaks on our behalf to the Father above, let us be encouraged to consider more than just our own interests in life. (Philippians 2:4) In this way we will be sharing the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5) who came in the form of servant to bring about the salvation we could never have secured ourselves. May His OTHER-centeredness be exhibited in our life as well. He went the distance. Will we?

Have a great day PROMPTED TO LOOK BEYOND SELF!

The Unworthy! (3 of 3)

Many in this world think they are worthy to decide who is worthy and who is not. The manner in which they treat others reflects their view. Jesus was the most worthy individual to walk the face of this earth, and how was He treated? Much of the Jewish leadership viewed Him as a problem that needed to be removed from their presence. (note John 11:45-53)

The Hebrew writer spoke of men and women of faith who, in spite of their faithfulness to God, were not treated well at all. This WORLD became a hostile place for them to dwell. Have we experienced such?

Note part of the Hebrew writer’s list.
“(36) Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. (37) They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated -- (38) OF WHOM THE WORLD WAS NOT WORTHY -- wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.” (Hebrews 11:36-38 ESV)

These heroes of faith were treated shamefully by a WORLD that the Hebrew writer stated was not worthy of them. Even as we live in a WORLD that is unworthy (self included) of the hope God has extended, we can still live in a worthy manner. (note Colossians 1:9-10) Are we seeking to live worthy of the WORLD or worthy of God? Do we recognize how we are to be in the world, but not of it? (John 17:14-15) Faith helps us turn away from the world’s approval to seek God’s praise.

The WORLD may treat our values and the truth of God we uphold as being unworthy of their acceptance. Nevertheless, as long as we are here there is opportunity to influence the world’s attention toward God and His standard which is of eternal consequence. As we live faithful to the Will of God, let us be encouraged that someday we will be removed from this WORLD to be transported to the worthy place He has prepared for us to spend eternity. It will surely be worth our having faithfully endured the short span of life lived in this realm.

Have a great day LIVING FOR THE REALM THAT AWAITS US!

The Unworthy! (2 of 3)

Do we find our worthiness in what we are able to do for ourselves? Does our own goodness give us a sense of great worth in our eyes? This is an area of life where we must be careful or we will find ourselves glorying in self-righteousness instead of seeking the righteousness which comes from God. (Philippians 3:9) Our attitude as SERVANTS of God must be closely guarded lest we develop too high an estimation of our own selves.

After Jesus described the way it was in life with regard to servants and their masters (Luke 17:7-9) He capped it off with the attitude we should possess as His servants.

“So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are UNWORTHY SERVANTS; we have ONLY DONE WHAT WAS OUR DUTY.’” (Luke 17:10 ESV)

Paul was a great SERVANT of God, yet he stated he was unworthy to be called an apostle because he had been a persecutor of the church. (1 Corinthians 15:9) It was the grace of God that made him what he was and Paul lived in a manner that such grace would not be in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:10)

Certainly Jesus talked at other times regarding rewards for His servants. (i.e. Matthew 6:3-4 & 10:42) Nevertheless, we must bear in mind that as necessary as our obedience and works are they still don’t merit our salvation. As humble SERVANTS of Christ we are to recognize we’re merely stewards of the possessions and talents with which we have been blessed. The many good works we do aren’t done to merit our salvation, but are to be a continual expression of our gratitude to God for having provided it through His Son.

May our works of SERVICE be an acceptable offering of praise and thanksgiving to the God of mercy and grace. Jesus Himself demonstrated that it is a life of SERVICE that is a life worth living. Let us continue to follow in His steps!

Have a great day WORKING THE WORKS GOD PREPARED FOR US TO DO!

The Unworthy! (1 of 3)

Sometimes we see confusion in the world with regard to making distinctions between the worthy and the unworthy. This is an area of discernment in which we need to exercise caution. There are times when the difficulty is related to an improper perspective of self and what is being offered. Such was the case with Jews Paul and Barnabas encountered in Antioch of Pisidia. There in the synagogue Paul was invited to share a word of exhortation. (Acts 13:15) Following his sharing of the Gospel of Jesus the people begged to hear the message again on the next Sabbath. (Acts 13:42) On the following Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the message. (Acts 13:44) However, this caused many of the Jews to become jealous when they saw the crowds and they tried to contradict what Paul was proclaiming. (Acts 13:45)

As Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly, note their response to those who rejected the message.
“And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, ‘It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and JUDGE YOURSELVES UNWORTHY OF ETERNAL LIFE, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.” (Acts 13:46 ESV)

Unworthy of ETERNAL LIFE? There is a sense in which we are all unworthy to receive ETERNAL LIFE. We don’t deserve it. It was our sins that put Jesus on the cross where He tasted the death (Hebrews 2:9) we deserve. Nevertheless, because of the grace and mercy of God, the worthy One came and provided the means for our salvation and ETERNAL LIFE.

Writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul exhorted…
“(1) I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to WALK IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE CALLING to which you have been called, (2) WITH ALL HUMILITY and GENTLENESS, with PATIENCE, bearing with one another in LOVE, (3) EAGER TO MAINTAIN THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV)

The unbelievers encountered by Paul and Barnabas were ready to throw away the opportunity to receive the gift of life (Romans 6:23) Jesus came to provide. They would not accept it for themselves. Though we are in fact not worthy of such a hope, let us be eager to accept the ETERNAL LIFE God is so willing to graciously provide and then aim to live worthy of the calling we have received.

Have a great day RIGHTFULLY ACCEPTING GOD’S GRACIOUS HOPE!

The Way Of Growth!

Someone has said, “Wise people sometimes change their minds -- fools never.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] Stubbornness can blind one to the truth whereas the wise, in humility, WILL CHANGE when the need is there.

Note what Jesus directed at some of the Jewish leaders of that day.
“(28) ‘What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ (29) And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward HE CHANGED HIS MIND AND WENT. (30) And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. (31) Which of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. (32) For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And EVEN WHEN YOU SAW IT, YOU DID NOT AFTERWARD CHANGE YOUR MINDS AND BELIEVE HIM.” (Matthew 21:28-32 ESV)

The first son appears to have exhibited open rebellion, but his conscience was touched and he CHANGED HIS MIND. We might say the second son was a polite “yes man”, but he only offered lip service and did not go. As Jesus capped off the story He pointed to the foolishness of those who had heard the testimony of John and yet would not CHANGE their thinking. The tax collectors and prostitutes (the outcasts of the day) were willing to CHANGE to the way of righteousness while the pious leaders hung onto their own self-righteous attitude.

Paul was one who possessed great spiritual zeal even before He came to know Christ. (Philippians 3:6) He had been advancing in Judaism beyond many his own age, being very zealous for the traditions of the fathers. (Galatians 1:14) However, when faced with the truth of Christ he was wise enough to recognize he had been wrong and CHANGED HIS MIND. Had Paul still been seeking the approval of men he would not have become a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10)

Isn’t it wonderful we don’t have to be slaves to our past. Though we might begin wrong or draw some wrong conclusions along the way, we don’t have to continue down that path. To admit we have been wrong and CHANGE OUR MIND is simply to acknowledge we are growing. May we continue to allow the truth of God’s Word to be the last word on every subject so that by it we may continue to have our thinking transformed into harmony with the mind of God.

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD TO RENEW THE MIND!

Keep On Keeping On!

A couple days ago as I was walking I felt like I could just keep WALKING ON forever. I would have liked to have walked further, but there was only enough time to walk five miles. Yesterday was one of my usual endurance days so I decided to push myself a little and add a few more miles to the usual Tuesday walk. However, for some reason I did not start out with the feeling I could WALK ON forever. As my walk progressed I found I had to keep telling myself, “KEEP WALKING. Focus on a mile at a time. You’ll make it.” I even spoke the words out loud. A goal had been set in my mind and I wanted to achieve it. Therefore, by taking each mile one step at a time I did reach the goal.

As I walk I encounter various individuals, some of whom I have encountered before. Seeing them as well as having passersby on the road honk and wave always encourages me as I WALK ON. Recently an individual I had encountered before commented as I passed him, “There you go making me feel inadequate again.” When others comment regarding my pace I usually try to encourage them with the statement, “At least you’re walking too.” We had three of our grandchildren with us this past weekend and one of them (Andrew) said to me, “PaPa, for being the Dad of a Dad you sure are quick.” That was a nice shot of encouragement too.

Aren’t there times in life when we just feel like we could keep going on with what we are doing forever? We feel good, the atmosphere around us seems just right, and we don’t feel like it is taking too much out of us. Such moments are a reprieve from the times when having to endure may not be so easy. However, when the going seems long and strenuous we need to keep telling ourselves to WALK ON anyway. We should also be mindful of not putting down those who appear to be walking slower, but rather encourage them to keep WALKING ON as well.

Like Paul, let us strive to maintain a resolve that says…
“I PRESS ON toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14 ESV)

The pace of each one of us in this life may very with regard to our journey to maturity in Christ. The important thing to keep in mind is to continue WALKING ON! The persistence in WALKING ON and the fact we are progressing is a good thing. Pressing onward, not in a walk “according to the flesh” (2 Corinthians 10:2), but in a “manner worthy of God” (1 Thessalonians 2:12) is to be the goal. Arriving at our eternal goal may not come at the same time for us all, but if we keep pressing on toward it, to eventually arrive is what counts.

Have a great day RESOLVED TO KEEP PRESSING ON IN CHRIST!

Dollars & Sense!

Recognizing VALUE as we spend our money and expend ourselves in labors of various sorts makes sense. Doing such reveals the possession of wisdom regarding life. Most people, when investing their money, strive to make sensible investments. The same wisdom needs to be exercised in the investment of our time and energy in the varying activities of life. However, it is sad to see those who seem to be unable to distinguish between that which is truly a good deal and that which is not. Many in this world appear to be investing their lives in foolishness and will end up losing more than they realize; their very soul! Do our priorities reflect a consciousness of where true VALUE lies? Do the ideas and the things we buy into reveal an understanding of what truly lasts.

Solomon encouraged…
“How much BETTER TO GET WISDOM THAN GOLD! TO GET UNDERSTANDING is to be chosen RATHER THAN SILVER.” (Proverbs 16:16 ESV)

There are some things money cannot buy. Wisdom and understanding are of greater VALUE than gold and silver because how we live has an impact beyond the things of this earthly realm.

Solomon also warned…
“Why should a fool have MONEY in his hand TO BUY WISDOM when he has NO SENSE?” (Proverbs 17:16 ESV)

Some have spent much money on education and yet still don’t appear to know how to live. There are some very “educated” fools in the world today; among whom are those who are continually learning, but never able (or willing) to acknowledge the truth. (2 Timothy 3:7)

May our life daily reveal our acknowledgement of the high VALUE of the wisdom of God as we continue to set aside our own desires and take hold of the life that the understanding of His Will provides.

Have a great day REVEALING THE SENSIBLENESS OF GOD’S WISDOM!

Attentiveness! (3 of 3)

Some comments are worth ignoring. People may tell us things that should be allowed to go in one ear and out the other or to pass over our head. However, there are words spoken which ought to be taken in and cherished in the HEART.

Solomon urged…
“(20) My son, BE ATTENTIVE to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.” (21) Let them not escape from your sight; KEEP THEM WITHIN YOUR HEART. (22) For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. (23) KEEP YOUR HEART WITH ALL VIGILANCE, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:20-23)

Jesus pointed out the thing that matters regarding purity of life is what is treasured in the HEART, because it is from there the actions and words flow. (Matthew 15:18-19) What is stored up in the HEART is of vital importance, for just as the physical HEART pumps life through the body, what is stored in the HEART of our intellect determines the spiritual quality (or lack thereof) that flows from our life. That is why we must guard the HEART “with all vigilance” so that our life will be properly refreshed, sustained, and will bring glory to God.

Have a great day KEEPING LIFE’S INNER SPRING PURE!

Attentiveness (2 of 3)

When someone asks us to guard something of value to them, they might exhort us to make sure we don’t take our EYES off of it for even a moment. Therefore, whether we stand or sit, our EYES remain glued to whatever it might be until they return.

Solomon urged…
“(20) My son, BE ATTENTIVE to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. (21) Let them NOT ESCAPE FROM YOUR SIGHT; keep them within your heart.” (Proverbs 4:20-21)

If we fail to continually keep the wisdom of God IN VIEW we could soon find ourselves having lost it as the FOCUS rests more and more on the worldly ways around us. We are to VIEW and REVIEW God’s Word on a constant basis to guard against departing from it. Keeping His Will IN VIEW not only provides us with the best life possible, but also steers us away from what would otherwise affect our health (Proverbs 4:22) both physically and spiritually. It is of utmost importance to keep our FOCUS fixed on what God has revealed to us.

Have a great day KEEPING THE SIGHT SET ON GOD’S WISDOM!

Attentiveness (1 of 3)

It is fun to watch our dog when something begins to get her attention. Her head pops up, her EARS lift and turn toward the direction of the sound, and her nose begins to wiggle as she sniffs the air. Though she is getting old and does not get around as easily as she used to, there is nothing wrong with her EARS. It is even difficult to quietly open the cupboard where some of her treats are kept without her HEARING and hobbling into the room to see what we are getting.

At times when someone is speaking to us and we want to make sure we hear them above all the other noises or voices that might be around us, we will cup an EAR and turn it toward them. Such should be the case with regard to anything WORTH HEARING.

Solomon exhorted…
“(20) My son, BE ATTENTIVE to my words; INCLINE YOUR EAR to my sayings.” (Proverbs 4:20 ESV)

The reason given regarding the need for such attentiveness is that these words were “life to those who find them.” (Proverbs 4:22 ESV) God has spoken. His Word has be recorded. His mind has been revealed. His wisdom has been offered. Our life depends on having HEARD it. May we daily incline our EAR to Him for it remains the message most WORTH HEARING again and again.

Have a great day KEEPING BOTH EARS OPEN TO GOD’S WISDOM!

A Single Vote

Political signs have been popping up in yards and our mail in ballots came in today’s mail for our upcoming primary election. This election will narrow the fields for the general election to take place in November. I enjoy living in a democracy. To have a voice in what goes on is both a privilege and responsibility. However, things don’t always turn out the way I vote. Not everyone shares the same desires and values I do. Though voters in our country are encouraged that every single vote counts, I sometimes wonder if my vote has really made a difference. Not all the individuals I vote for get elected nor do all the issues I want get passed. All I get is one vote and whether it is the decisive vote or not, at least the opportunity to voice my opinion is made.

Though our country is set up as a democracy, I must remember the kingdom of God is a monarchy and Christ is the authority on the throne. He has not given us a vote, but would have us understand He is to be viewed as sovereign and the purposes of God stand. (Proverbs 19:21) Nevertheless, we could live under the authority of no better monarch than Jesus.

As we have been called out of the world and into the kingdom of Christ, chosen in Him to dwell in a kingdom that transcends this world, we need to consider the kind of citizens we are to strive to be. We should also be encouraged that in Him we can find a secure position.

Peter exhorted…
“(10) Therefore, brothers, be all the more DILIGENT TO MAKE YOUR CALLING AND ELECTION SURE, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. (11) For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:10-11 ESV)

It is not the world, but rather the Lord Who decides our place in His kingdom. Regardless of the what the world might think of us (Luke 6:26), it is GOD’S VOTE THAT COUNTS (Romans 8:31), and for that we can be eternally thankful. No matter what the view of the world might be, GOD’S VOTE IS THE ONE VOTE THAT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR US. It is HIS ELECTION that ensures the victory. If we are in Christ, we are living in the ELECTED REALM of salvation.

Have a great day KNOWING THE VOTE THAT COUNTS!

Making A Difference!

I think we all want to feel that what we are involved in is making some sort of difference in this life. That is what most people take into consideration when choosing a career. For many, the work they choose to take on defines who they are, whether that be a computer programmer, a doctor, a mechanic, a teacher, or something else. Some occupations indirectly bring benefit to people (i.e. produce growers and ranchers, factory workers, power company employees, etc.) while other professions can bring one into very DIRECT CONTACT with others (i.e. doctors and nurses, counselors, social workers, etc.). Though today’s society may tend to hold higher esteem for a doctor than for a laundry worker, is that necessarily the focus shared by God?

If our life is truly defined as being a Christian, where is the emphasis placed? Is it centered on the ways in which we can most TOUCH THE LIVES OF OTHERS IN DIRECT WAYS? Certainly that would be the result of serving as salt and light to those around us. (Matthew 5:13-16). I find it interesting what Jesus chose to focus on in one of His judgment day parables.

We read…
“(34) Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (35) For I was hungry and YOU GAVE ME FOOD, I was thirsty and YOU GAVE ME DRINK, I was a stranger and YOU WELCOMED ME, (36) I was naked and YOU CLOTHED ME, I was sick and YOU VISITED ME, I was in prison and YOU CAME TO ME.’ (37) Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? (38) And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? (39) And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ (40) And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, AS YOU DID IT TO ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE MY BROTHERS, YOU DID IT TO ME.’” (Matthew 25:34-40 ESV)

There is a glimpse into the mind of God regarding some things that matter; works that make a difference not only for others, but for our own selves as well. Not that any of this merits our salvation, but rather each one of these can be a demonstration of the genuineness of our relationship to Jesus and the Christ-likeness that permeates our being. There is just no substitute for THE PERSONAL TOUCH as we interact with those around us.

God has given other commands which are not to be ignored. However, Jesus ’ teaching in the above passage implies we are expected to CONNECT WITH OTHERS in meaningful and practical ways. These are things we each can do; significant works which glorify our Lord. May “servants” seeking to glorify and please Christ become the thing that defines our daily life.

Have a great day SEIZING THE OPPORTUNITIES TO TOUCH OTHERS!
