Must Do Our Part Too!

God has given us many marvelous assurances and promises. With each of these we should take God at His word. God is SERIOUS regarding what He offers us. That SERIOUSNESS should be recognized in His willingness to send His Son to redeem us and save us from our sins. Through our fellowship with Christ, God has provided the good way for life. Are we SERIOUS with regard to continuing down the road He has placed before us? How many want the blessings and gifts, but without any effort with regard to life change?

Someone has stated, “The way some say, ‘Get thee behind me, Satan,’ means, ‘Get behind and push.’” [source: sentence sermons] We need to recognize that the devil is a “pusher” and what he pushes takes us down the wrong road. Are we SERIOUS enough about keeping on track that we strive to keep as far away from temptation as possible? The devil is a game player and playing with temptation is a gamble we dare not wager.

Paul encouraged…
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. GOD IS FAITHFUL, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation HE WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE WAY OF ESCAPE, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)

Though God provides the “way of escape” we still have to choose to use it. Are we SERIOUS enough about our relationship with God that we will seek it and go that way? The statement has also been made, “When you meet temptation, turn to the right.” [source: sentence sermons] Turning to the right is turning away from temptation and away from Satan. As it is with anger, so it should be with regard to temptation that we be SERIOUS about not giving the devil an opportunity. (Eph. 4:27) Resisting the devil while submitting to God (James 4:7) is what will aid us in keeping life on the right road. May we continue to travel the way He continues to open before us.

Have a great day MEETING GOD’S FAITHFULNESS BY FAITHFULLY FOLLOWING HIM!

In Over Our Head!

Getting into water over our head may not alarm us too much if we know how to swim. However, how long can we tread water? We may be able to keep our head above water for a while, but eventually we must recognize the need for help.

Note how David described the experience of feeling OVERWHELMED.
“(1) Save me, O God! For THE WATERS HAVE COME UP TO MY NECK. (2) I SINK IN DEEP MIRE, where THERE IS NO FOOTHOLD; I have COME INTO DEEP WATERS, and THE FLOOD SWEEPS OVER ME. (3) I AM WEARY with my crying out; my throat is parched. MY EYES GROW DIM with waiting for my God.” (Psalm 69:1-3)

Such can become the picture of trying to make it on our own. We may find ourselves over our head with regard to having taken on too much work, procrastinated to the extent we are overwhelmed by tasks, accumulated debt, or other varying challenges of life. In the midst of any of this we may find our attitude, focus, and even faith beginning to drown. Regardless of whether such circumstances are self-caused or not, the source of help we need is still the same. Perhaps it is good for us to feel OVERWHELMED from time to time to remind us we are not to try to make it on our own.

David began his cry with a focus toward God as he said, “Save me, O God!” (vs.1a) He went on to declare…
“(13) But as for me, MY PRAYER IS TO YOU, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love ANSWER ME IN YOUR SAVING FAITHFULNESS. (14) Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. (15) Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.” (Psalm 69:13-15)

As David faced his varying challenges of life He knew God was the One to look to for rescue. He PRAYED TO GOD, TRUSTING HIM to answer according to His timing. We may not always get the quick fix we desire, but God can and will sustain and lead us through even the challenges we have created for ourselves. May we continue to SEEK HIS HELP as we strive to live in accordance with His Will.

Have a great day TRUSTING GOD AS OUR LIFEGUARD!

Keeping It In Balance!

Paul had a marvelous way of keeping the view of his own life in balance. There was much about his life that could have caused him to boast. There was also much about his life which could have caused him to really be down on himself.

Paul was aware of his rich heritage as he stated…
“(4) though I MYSELF HAVE REASON FOR CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: (5) circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;” (Philippians 3:4-5 ESV)

That would have looked good on any Jew’s resume. Nevertheless, all that was nothing compared to knowing Christ Jesus his Lord. (Philippians 3:8) Even as he viewed himself as a faithful servant of Christ in preaching the gospel he would not boast in himself (note 1 Corinthians 9:16-17) because his ministry demanded his stewardship of what had been entrusted to him.

Paul was also very much aware of his grievous sin before God. In his zeal as a Pharisee he had persecuted the church, though he had viewed himself at the time as living blameless under the law. (Philippians 3:6) What he had done had been in all good conscience though he was in fact seriously wrong.

Knowing what he did not deserve, Paul wrote…
“(9) For I am the least of the apostles, UNWORTHY TO BE CALLED AN APOSTLE, BECAUSE I PERSECUTED THE CHURCH of God. (10) But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:9-10 ESV)

Paul knew full well how unworthy he was to be in the position Christ had placed him. Writing to Timothy, he even acknowledged himself as the worst or foremost of sinners. However, Paul also knew the mercy he had received because Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15-16)

Someone has said, “God wisely designed the human body so that we can
neither pat our own backs nor kick ourselves too easily.” [source: calendar quote] Can we see that exemplified in the life of Paul? How about in the view of our own life?

We may recognize the advantages we have received to place us where we are today. We may also continue to be fully aware of our blunders of the past. Nevertheless, recognizing how we are viewed by God through Christ should leave us with both a sense of GRATEFUL HUMILITY AND PEACE. We must be HUMBLE (yet encouraged) as we recognize the high stature God has given us as Christians while at the same time finding PEACE in trusting the blood of Jesus to adequately deal with our sins. (1 John 1:7) In Christ the condemnation is removed (Romans 8:1) and the only room for boasting is in Him. (Galatians 6:14) Let us thank God that in Christ we don’t get what we deserve and praise Him that we are granted what we don’t deserve.

Have a great day MAINTAINING A PROPER SPIRITUAL EQUILIBRIUM!

Sharper!

Some people are pretty sharp and I’m not referring to intelligence. It’s the pointed words they use which cut and gouge, slice and dice, pierce and stab, destroying confidence and mutilating relationships. There is POWER IN WORDS and that power is often abused.

David referred to those…
“(3) who whet their TONGUES LIKE SWORDS, who aim BITTER WORDS LIKE ARROWS, (4) SHOOTING FROM AMBUSH at the blameless, SHOOTING AT HIM SUDDENLY and without fear. (5) They hold fast to their evil purpose; they TALK OF LAYING SNARES secretly, thinking, who can see them?” (Psalm 64:3-5 ESV)

Perhaps we have been inflicted by those sharp jabs of the tongue and the piercing arrows of words shot our direction. We are also most likely guilty on occasion of being the inflictor of the same. We need to give serious thought to the impact of OUR WORDS even as we recognize we may not be able to completely avoid being on the receiving end of such pierces and stabs.

David went on to note the encouragement he had in the face of such experiences.
“(7) BUT GOD SHOOTS HIS ARROW AT THEM; THEY ARE WOUNDED SUDDENLY. (8) They are brought to ruin, with THEIR OWN TONGUES TURNED AGAINST THEM; all who see them will wag their heads.” (Psalm 64:7-8 ESV)

God’s words of judgment and righteousness are even sharper than those mankind may strike with or shoot. That which some have used against others, God will turn on themselves. David was encouraged in view of God ultimately dealing with those who opposed him. Therefore he would rejoice and take his refuge in God. (Psalm 64:10)

The Hebrew writer also drew attention to the POWER IN THE WORDS of God.
“(12) For the word of God is living and active, SHARPER THAN ANY TWO-EDGED SWORD, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ESV)

The POWER IN THE WORD of God can be described as that which is able to conquer all that stand against it (note Revelation 19:15 and surrounding verses), as well as a “scalpel” in the trained surgeon’s hand to cut away that which must be separated from us in order to preserve the spiritual health of our life. May we allow the POWER OF GOD’S WORD to work its intended purpose in our life while we consider the POWER OF OUR WORDS on the lives of others.

Have a great day FOCUSING ON SPEECH’S PREFERABLE POWER!

Interesting!

It’s interesting how we can EASILY and WILLINGLY do things we might not otherwise choose to do (perhaps maybe not even enjoy doing) simply because it is something a person we love or enjoy being with is interested in. By doing the things which interest others we reveal the sincerity of our love and a genuine interest in their desires. We will even EASILY and WILLINGLY set aside our own activities to jump into involvement with their interests without giving it a second thought. Should that not be characteristic of our relationship with Jesus?

Note the compliment Paul paid Timothy.
“(19) I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. (20) For I have no one like him, who will be GENUINELY CONCERNED FOR YOUR WELFARE.” (Philippians 2:19-20 ESV)

Timothy was a devoted servant of God. He was of great help to Paul in his ministry. Paul appears to have been greatly encouraged by his association with Timothy who shared a concern for the spiritual interests of those for whom Paul was also concerned.

Paul went on to point out what probably contributed to this attitude of Timothy.
“(21) They all seek their own INTERESTS, not those OF JESUS CHRIST. (22) But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel.” (Philippians 2:21-22 ESV)

Many seek their own interests or those of the world. However, when we center our minds on the interests of Jesus Christ, we reveal the sincere love we have for seeking to please and glorify Him. When we focus on the interests of Jesus we will be drawn to share a genuine concern for the spiritual welfare of those around us, because it is that for which Jesus came to provide. With such an interest we will find how EASILY and WILLINGLY we will spend time doing things we might not otherwise have been interested in doing.

Interesting what relationships can do, isn’t it? Since we are disciples of Jesus Christ, may we continually keep His interests in mind as we go about our daily lives.

Have a great day FINDING THE JOY IN DOING JESUS’ WILL!

Valiant

The history of mankind is filled with stories of valiant people and valiant endeavors; brave individuals steadfastly standing for worthy causes. We read about them in history books. We find them in the pages of Scripture. Perhaps we have even met or will meet such persons during our own lifetime. However, have we ever pictured ourselves being included in the list?

In association with a time of conflict and VICTORY, David wrote…
“(11) Oh, grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! (12) WITH GOD WE SHALL DO VALIANTLY; IT IS HE WHO WILL TREAD DOWN OUR FOES.” (Psalm 60:11-12 ESV)

In this life we stand to face various foes of a seeming insurmountable nature. Paul listed such opponents as tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. (Romans 8:35) These are challenges which may try to separate us from our relationship with Christ and His love. However, note what Paul went on to declare.

Paul encouraged…
“NO, IN ALL THESE THINGS WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS THROUGH HIM WHO LOVED US.” (Romans 8:37 ESV)

Against such we stand to not just be conquerors, but MORE THAN CONQUERORS through Christ. Even over the greatest foe of death itself God has provided the means of VICTORY through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:54-57)

As we face life’s challenges we may wonder about our own ability to stand firm. Nevertheless, like David, let us understand that “with God we shall do valiantly” as we continually seek to be “strong in the Lord and in the strength of HIS MIGHT.” (Ephesians 6:10) VICTORY is a sure thing with Him.

Have a great day BRAVING LIFE’S CHALLENGES WITH THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD!

How Far?

Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul encouraged these Christians to focus on the great joy and thanksgiving associated with their relationship to Christ. Such would be the result of their unity and other-centeredness as well as their continued daily walk with Christ. As Paul exhorted them to share the attitude of Christ (Philippians 2:5), among the characteristics exemplified by Him was the great servant attitude Jesus portrayed in surrendering completely to the Father’s Will.

Among the points made by Paul was…
“HE humbled himself by becoming OBEDIENT TO THE POINT OF DEATH, EVEN DEATH ON A CROSS.” (Philippians 2:8 ESV)

How far will OUR OBEDIENCE to the submission of God’s Will take us? Jesus was obedient to the point of death. Though He prayed that what He was about to endure might pass, Jesus was still willing to submit to the Will of the Father (Matthew 26:39), even “to the point of death.” However, Paul pointed out that the death Jesus endured was “even death on a cross.” To just face death and remain obedient to God is one thing, but to face death of an excruciating nature and remain obedient is another. This is what Jesus was willing to do for us. How far will OUR OBEDIENCE take us with regard to Him?

When Jesus warned of the persecution to come, He exhorted…
“(21) Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, (22) and you will be hated by all FOR MY NAME’S SAKE. BUT THE ONE WHO ENDURES TO THE END WILL BE SAVED.” (Matthew 10:21-22 ESV)

Jesus went on to point out that a disciple and servant are not above their teacher and master. Rather, it was enough “to be like” the teacher and master. (Matthew 10:24-25) Are we focusing OUR OBEDIENCE to parallel that of our Lord so that we will be submissive to the Father’s Will regardless of what we might face?

As Paul faced whatever lay before him, his continuing hope was that he would have sufficient courage to honor Christ in his body, whether that be by life or death. (Philippians 1:20) I believe Paul’s life revealed how much he knew what it meant to possess the mind of Christ and walk obediently in His steps. Let us understand that OUR OBEDIENCE to God, regardless of what we face, will always lead to glory. May we continue to live a surrendered life to the Father’s Will, knowing He is fully able to bring us safely home.

Have a great day FOCUSED TO GO THE DISTANCE WITH CHRIST!

Above And Beyond!

In a psalm associated with the time David fled from Saul in a cave, we
read…
“(2) I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. (3) HE WILL SEND FROM HEAVEN AND SAVE ME; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. ‘Selah’ God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness!” (Psalm 57:2-3 ESV)

Quite often Israel got into trouble when they looked to their own strength or the strength of others (even other nations) to rescue them. David’s words imply his focus was beyond what either his friends or even his mighty men of valor could do. (Note 2 Samuel 23:8-39 for an impressive list of their abilities.) Instead, it was FROM HEAVEN that he saw his salvation would come.

Good things come FROM HEAVEN. That which is most beneficial comes FROM HEAVEN. The best of the best comes FROM HEAVEN.

Jesus reminded Jews of this fact in the following way.
“(32) Jesus then said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread FROM HEAVEN, but my Father gives you the TRUE BREAD FROM HEAVEN. (33) For THE BREAD OF GOD IS HE WHO COMES DOWN FROM HEAVEN AND GIVES LIFE TO THE WORLD.’” (John 6:32-33 ESV)

Prior to this discussion Jesus had fed the five thousand. The people continued to follow because they had eaten their fill. (John 6:26) Jesus was seen as a good provider. However, what Jesus came FROM HEAVEN to provide was greater than just bread to fill the stomach. Jesus would go on to point out that those who ate the manna in the wilderness died, but those who would eat the bread He was then referring to (Himself) would not die. (John 6:48-51) When Jesus spoke of this bread that brings life, the people (still thinking in terms of physical bread) stated their desire for Jesus to give this bread to them always. (John 6:34) However, Jesus was referring above and beyond what they were thinking, pointing to Himself through Whom they could live forever. (John 6:51)

Often we may think we know what we need, but when we look above we should recognize God has in mind greater blessings beyond what we might imagine or be seeking. (note Ephesians 3:20) As David noted in the psalm above, he looked “to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” May we also continued to look up to God for the greatest blessings FROM HEAVEN He desires to bring to us now and for an eternity with Him.

Have a great day KEEPING THE VISION HIGH!

A Sweet Tooth!

Some TASTES just don’t go together. Have you ever brushed your teeth and then taken a drink of orange juice? The TASTE combination does not go together very well. I’m sure there are not many of us who do not like chocolate cake? However, I also love grapefruit juice, but have you ever used grapefruit juice to wash down chocolate cake? Yuck! That’s what a cold glass of milk is for!

Sometimes we get a TASTE in our mouth we wish to savor. We don’t want it to go away. When we enjoy a TASTE in this way it often encourages us to avoid other things that don’t go well with what we have already TASTED. While we recognize this in a physical sense should we not also acknowledge it spiritually?

As David declared the law of the Lord to be perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and true, (Psalm 19:7-9) he went on to state…
“More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine told; SWEETER ALSO THAN HONEY AND DRIPPINGS OF THE HONEYCOMB.” (Psalm 19:10 ESV)

When God’s Word is TASTED to be even sweeter than honey to us, that TASTE should help us to sense the bitter, sour, and un-complementary TASTES of the ideas and ways of the world. The more we continue taking in His sweet word, the more we will not desire other things.

If we are going to possess a “sweet tooth” let it be for the sweet words of God. (Psalm 119:103) The more frequently we consume God’s Word, the more we will sense the yuck factor in relation to the temptations this world offers. May we continually receive the abundant mouthwatering morsels He provides.

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE SCRUMPTIOUSNESS OF SCRIPTURE!

Properly Impressed

Sometimes when an individual talks about things they have done, someone who may not be impressed responds, “BEEN THERE! DONE THAT!” Many may boast of the things they have done with a spirit of being unimpressed with others, but how does such relate to our view of God?

God (as He revealed Himself to Moses) is the great “I AM!” (Exodus 3:14-15) That Name is an expression of God simply being; a reference to His existence without any connection to time of beginning or end. God was, is, and will be. He is eternal. He is the One who has seen all and directed and brought into existence all creation. Therefore “I AM” is indicative of God’s eternal essence as well as His Sovereignty over all creation.

To some who are caught up in their own selves God could say…
“(4) WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. (5)Who determined its measurements -- surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? (6) On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, … (12) HAVE YOU commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place,…. (16) HAVE YOU entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?” (Job 38:4-6, 12, and 16 ESV)

I encourage you to read Job 38-39 and allow God to bring a proper perspective regarding self and life. God is the only One who seems to truly be in a position to boast, “BEEN THERE! DONE THAT!” In view of “I AM” we, like Moses, should humbly ask, “Who am I….” (Exodus 3:11) David humbly asked it as well. (1 Chronicles 29:14-16) David also wondered regarding God’s mindfulness of man. (Psalm 8:3-4; Psalm 144:3-4] Nevertheless, God is very much aware of us and all the situations of our life. (i.e. Matthew 10:29-31; 1 Peter 5:7)

“Who am I” in view of the great “I AM”? Paul directed the focus of the Corinthians to the fact there is “one God, the Father, FROM WHOM ARE ALL THINGS AND FOR WHOM WE EXIST,….” (1 Corinthians 8:6 ESV) Because He exists we exist and are to exist for Him. Like Moses we should be encouraged that God has chosen us to carry out His Will. Also, like David, be encouraged we have something to give because God has richly blessed us. Be encouraged also that our eternal Father is ever mindful of our life. We are significant to Him!

God has “BEEN THERE! DONE THAT!” and is able to bring about complete salvation for us. May we humble ourselves before Him while bearing in mind His Sovereignty and being encouraged by the fact God truly does care.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING WE ARE BECAUSE HE IS!

Earnest With What?

When God’s ways are ignored things can really get mixed up and in a mess. How much do we see occur in this world that causes us to shake our heads in wonder? Someone has noted: “Many wise words are spoken in jest, but they don’t compare with the number of foolish words spoken in earnest.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] Foolish words spoken in earnest! Are we amazed at the ideas some people accept and validate as WISDOM when in fact they are foolishness?

Looking at life Solomon observed…
“(5) There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were an error proceeding from the ruler: (6) FOLLY IS SET IN MANY HIGH PLACES, and the rich sit in a low place.” (Ecclesiastes 10:5-6 ESV)

So many times that which is of real value (according to God’s standards) is set aside to accept what is actually folly. We see this again and again especially as it relates to moral issues in our society. Some are so set on rejecting God’s principles for life that almost any idea that has Christians or Christian values associated with it is quickly rejected. There is even cringing at the thought of conservatives in public office. I almost chuckle (except for the reality it is not really funny) when I read of policies set in place that were suggested by Christians in the past, but were only finally adopted after other efforts were found to not be very successful. One case in point is the now recognized WISDOM in urging abstinence among teens. It is God’s Way with His ultimate idea of marriage in mind. However, those who are determined to accept the foolishness of worldly wisdom -- since such are lacking in a love for the truth -- God allows them to be deluded so that they believe what is false. (note 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12)

I saw a bumper sticker recently that read “Liberal, And Proud Of It.” I suppose some could display a similar expression regarding being a conservative as well. However, it is human pride (regardless of whether one considers themselves conservative, liberal or somewhere in between) which often creates the difficulty in being able to acknowledge and accept the true WISDOM of God.

Referring to God, the Psalmist pointed out…
“HE LEADS THE HUMBLE IN WHAT IS RIGHT, AND TEACHES THE HUMBLE HIS WAY.” (Psalm 25:9 ESV)

May we retain a humility that allows us to accept God’s Way as we continue to stand firm in the WISDOM He provides!

Have a great day WISELY SUBMITTING TO THE WISDOM FROM ABOVE!

Purposeful Gain!

Many people work to simply gain more stuff. Some steal to acquire things. For others their life boils down to this: They work so they can eat so they can work so they can eat so they can work…! Is that all the purpose we find for living? If we work to make money, what is it all for? Is it merely to survive or is there a higher purpose? Providing for family is important, especially since Paul pointed out that those who refuse to do so are worse than an unbeliever. (1 Timothy 5:8) Nevertheless, is there purpose even beyond this?

Writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul exhorted…
“Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him LABOR, DOING HONEST WORK with his own hands, so that he MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE WITH ANYONE IN NEED.” (Ephesians 4:28 ESV)

The work we do ought to be honest labor. That would mean it should be honorable work and the way in which we perform it should be to the best of our ability. However, did you notice Paul’s emphasis was not merely on making a living? He stated one purpose for working is so we might have something TO SHARE with others who are in need.

Even in the area of working we must guard against being selfish. Work is not all about us and getting more stuff. Work is about glorifying God by doing a job well, performing worthwhile service for others, providing for the needs of family, taking care of our debts, and having something TO SHARE with those who can use our help. Paul told Timothy to encourage the rich to be “rich in good works” by being generous and ready TO SHARE, for by so doing they would receive the greatest gain. (1 Timothy 6:18-19) May we recognize the many facets connected with our labors in life, performing them with the purposes of God in mind.

Have a great day THANKING GOD WE HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE!

IN ____ WE TRUST!

For us to make the statement above, what would go into the blank? What do our choices reflect? What do our actions reveal? To what or whom do we turn for counsel and guidance?

To turn away from God is to turn toward that which is false. Rejecting the truth of God is an act of pride because it is a decision that suggests one has either come up with or found better wisdom than what He has to offer. Many today have been easily led away from truth to believe lies. Paul even referred to those who “exchanged the truth about God for a lie” (Romans 1:25) and were so set on doing so that God gave them up to their desires. (Romans 1:24) What a perilous position in which to be left!

David exhorted…
“BLESSED IS THE MAN WHO MAKES THE LORD HIS TRUST, who does NOT TURN to the proud, TO THOSE WHO GO ASTRAY AFTER A LIE!” (Psalm 40:4 ESV)

Where have we placed OUR TRUST? If we place too much confidence in the teachings of men we too may be easily led astray. Our confidence needs to remain with what God has said because HE WILL NEVER LIE. (Titus 1:2) What He has stated we can rely upon. Keeping THE LORD as OUR TRUST we will be blessed!

Have a great day TRUSTING THE EVER TRUE ONE!

Reasonable Faith!

All the things you and I may plan don’t always work out or get fulfilled. Sometimes that is a good thing since all our plans may not be what God has in mind. Nevertheless, what do we know when it comes to God’s plans?

After Job had gone through his great trials, faced the accusations of his friends, and then finally had the opportunity to hear from God Himself, His faith in God appears to have become even stronger than it was at first. Job had continued to earnestly seek God and in the end he was willing to accept even that which he could not understand. God’s ways and wisdom were above him, but Job was safe in placing his life in the hands of God.

Following God’s final statements to Job we read…
“(1) Then Job answered the Lord and said: ‘(2) I KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO ALL THINGS, AND THAT NO PURPOSE OF YOURS CAN BE THWARTED. (3) ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.’” (Job 42:1-3 ESV)

Job was willing to admit his limitations when it came to understanding the ways of God. However, did you note what Job had come to know about God? Anything God intends to do He will do and there is no one and nothing that can possibly thwart His purposes!

As I consider some of those in the world who seem bent on carrying out evil, I always pray that their plans will be thwarted. However, at the same time, I am encouraged that God’s plans and purposes SHALL STAND! (note also Proverbs 19:21) Regardless of what mankind may do, the plans of God WILL ULTIMATELY PREVAIL. We can see that clearly with regard to the fulfillment of prophecy after prophecy from the Old Testament to the New Testament. In every detail God has brought His plans to fulfillment and His track record should encourage us that He will continue to do so.

Like Job (and his friends) we may not have a good explanation regarding the existence of good and evil and how bad and good happen to both the just and unjust alike. However, like Job we can come to know that ultimately the plans of God STAND FIRM and will be completely brought to fulfillment. It is therefore reasonable to continue seeking after God in Whom we can be assured that victory over evil will be the final outcome.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY GOD’S INFALLIBLE RECORD!

The Walking!

Some people don’t pay attention to where they are walking. Others have had the experience of sleep walking. Note the kind of walking Paul reminded the Ephesian Christians that once marked their life.

He wrote…
“And you were DEAD IN THE TRESPASSES AND SINS in which you ONCE WALKED, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.” (Ephesians 2:1 ESV)

At one time they were the “walking dead.” They were moving about and involved in various activities, but as far as the salvation of the souls was concerned, they were “walking dead”, separated from God. However, when they accepted the message of salvation in Christ they were made alive in Christ. (Ephesians 2:5) Now, did that mean they were then to be the “sitting alive”?

It is not enough for us to simply stop doing the things that are wrong. The WORKS which marked our life when we were the “walking dead” are to be replaced with WORKS that reveal the essence of our being alive in Christ. We are to pay attention to where we are walking and what we are doing along the way.

Paul went on to state…
“For we are his workmanship, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand, that WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM!” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)

The transition is to be one of moving from being the “walking dead” to being the “walking in good WORKS” which God had in mind for us even before we were His to do them. May we commit ourselves to daily walking in the WORKS which glorify God and reveal we are alive to be His servants to carry out His Will.

Have a great day WALKING LIVELY FOR GOD!

Anticipation!

It is fun to watch children who are anticipating something. They get so excited they can hardly stay still. The feet shuffle. Fingers fidget. They often have to be reminded to stay seated. I have observed this power welling up from within our grandchildren many times. It is nearly impossible for them to be still when they are filled with the excitement of what they know is coming.

As we grow older, do we lose some of that uncontainable quality of EXPECTATION? Someone has said, "Anticipation is ever more fun than recollecting." [source: calendar quote] There may be many things we enjoy thinking back on; many memorable moments we enjoy reliving in our mind. However, they have already been experienced and remain in the past. Though the remembrance may be deeply cherished, the excitement we experienced at the time does not seem to be fully retained in the memory. As much as we might desire, we are unable to return to that moment in time. On the other hand, while we live with EXPECTATION toward something, as time goes on and what is expected seems closer, the intensity of excitement continues to build and build in ways that eagerly move us onward in life.

There are many events we get excited about in this life which come and then become a part of the past. Then we are left to find the next thing to help encourage us on. We need something that captures our attention and draws us eagerly toward it. Such provides not only a real power, but a real purpose for living.

The Hebrew writer encouraged.
"(27) And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, (28) so CHRIST, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, WILL APPEAR A SECOND TIME, not to deal with sin but TO SAVE THOSE WHO ARE EAGERLY WAITING FOR HIM." (Hebrews 9:27-28 ESV)

When we were baptized into Christ we experienced the excitement of having our sins washed away. The power of the blood of Jesus to adequately deal with our sins should never be forgotten. That was His purpose in coming. However, it is because that relationship with Him began and continues that we are able to live with eager EXPECTATION of His second coming. This EXPECTATION provides the greatest power and purpose possible for living life now. May we allow that EXPECTATION to excite us toward keeping our feet moving, our fingers busy, and being unable to sit still as we live and serve now to the glory of God.

Have a great day LIVING IN EAGER EXCITEMENT OF MEETING CHRIST!

Crucified

Jesus was crucified (Gk. “stauroo”) on a cross (Gk. “stauro”). He was put to death there. On the cross Jesus died for our sins. It was there that the penalty we deserved to pay was taken off of us. We ought to have a great appreciation for the benefit we have received from our Lord being crucified. However, in our relationship to Him we must also recognize the crucifixion that is to have taken place in our own life.

Paul, writing to the churches of Galatia stated…
“(19) For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I HAVE BEEN CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST. (20) It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:19-20 ESV)

…and…

“And those who belong to Christ Jesus HAVE CRUCIFIED THE FLESH WITH ITS PASSIONS AND DESIRES.” (Galatians 5:24 ESV)

…and also…

“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which THE WORLD HAS BEEN CRUCIFIED TO ME, AND I TO THE WORLD.” (Galatians 6:14 ESV)

Paul kept going back to the cross. The cross had been a symbol of shame and the crucified Christ was a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. (1 Corinthians 1:23) However, to Paul it was glorious. The cross of Christ was not only central to salvation, but central to the living out of the Christian life as well. Connected to the cross was a crucifixion that set Paul free FROM SELF, from THE FLESH, and from THE WORLD. All this, Paul contended throughout the Galatian letter, the law and circumcision were powerless to do! The cutting off of flesh (circumcision; sign of a Jew) was not sufficient, but rather the crucifixion of the entire self and its connection to whatever else was outside of Christ. It is only through our connection to Christ and being crucified with Him that such freedom is possible. Having been crucified with Christ we have put off SELF, the power of THE FLESH, and THE INFLUENCE OF THE WORLD. It is then through being completely crucified in this way that we can truly be “a new creation” in Christ. (Galatians 6:15) May our life declare where we see the true glory rests!

Have a great day SEEKING THE TRUE GLORY CONNECTED TO CHRIST!

Truly Believing!

There is much we may believe. However, how much do we believe it? Are some of the things we believe a “mere” hope or are they a “certain” expectation? The Hebrew writer defined faith as “THE ASSURANCE of things hoped for, THE CONVICTION of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1 ESV) Do we have a faith in God that prompts us to believe in such a way? Someone has said, “We believe in a thing when we are prepared to act as if it were true.” [source: “sentence sermons”] Does this mark the faith we possess?

In that great chapter of heroes of faith, the Hebrew writer noted the faith of Abraham as follows:
“(17) By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises WAS IN THE ACT OF OFFERING up his only son, (18) of whom it was said, ‘Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.’ (19) HE CONSIDERED THAT GOD WAS ABLE EVEN TO RAISE HIM FROM THE DEAD, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” (Hebrews 11:17-19 ESV)

How do we know Abraham believed? Because HIS ACTIONS clearly revealed he did. His FAITH and WORKS went hand in hand (James 2:26) and because he truly believed, it was “counted to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3; Galatians 3:6; James 2:23 ESV) We might admit God’s request must have been confusing to Abraham. Nevertheless, he was willing to submit and obey the command.

How much do we believe God? To truly believe is to ACT and LIVE in a manner that reveals we know God will be true to what He has promised and revealed. May such faith mark our life that we can also be counted among those who are in God’s great “Hall Of Faith!”

Have a great day EXPERIENCING FAITH WORKS!

For Goodness Sake!

Have you ever heard a parent ask a child, “For goodness sake, can’t you behave?” Perhaps this has been directed toward you or you’ve said it yourself. Doing something for the sake of goodness is a good thing. Do we really need any better reason for doing something than for it to be good and right? Well, just how much goodness is in us? Hopefully there is a lot since we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) and what God creates is good. (i.e. Genesis 1:31) As Christians we are also being renewed in knowledge after the image of our Creator (Colossians 3:10) and transformed to be more and more like the Lord. (note 2 Corinthians 3:18) That too is a very good thing. Nevertheless, it is not our own goodness that has made forgiveness and reconciliation with God possible.

Note a statement made by David.
“(7) Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love REMEMBER ME, FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR GOODNESS, O LORD! (8) GOOD AND UPRIGHT IS THE LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. (9) He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.” (Psalm 25:7-9 ESV)

Sins! We’ve got them. We’d like to forget them. Praise God He has provided the means to adequately deal with our sins through Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:7) God’s willingness to forgive, according to David’s statement, is not based upon our own goodness to merit such a magnanimous gift. Rather it is for the sake of HIS GOODNESS according to His steadfast love that our sins and transgressions can be put behind us. David also stated that because GOD IS GOOD He provides us with the guidance and instruction we need to understand what is right and the way we are to go in life. May we constantly live in a manner that declares we truly appreciate this great blessing.

Have a great day BECAUSE OUR GOD IS GOOD!

A Friend of Truth!

Some people seem to have difficulty with the TRUTH. For some TRUTH about themselves may seem awful. Others don?t like to face up to TRUTH that means they have to change their lifestyle. There are also those who will take the TRUTH and twist it or sugarcoat it in an attempt to make it acceptable to a broader audience. However, the thing that really needs to be acknowledged is that TRUTH is TRUTH. TRUTH remains whether it is accepted by all or not.

As Paul stated to the church at Corinth? "For we cannot do anything against the truth, but ONLY FOR THE TRUTH." (2 Corinthians 13:8 ESV)

Are we an "offender" or "befriender" of TRUTH? What is revealed by our use of it?

Pilate asked Jesus the question, "What is TRUTH"? (John 18:38) Jesus was the TRUTH (John 14:6) standing right in front of Him. However, as Paul stated, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ (Philippians 3:18) and therefore of the TRUTH regarding Him. The TRUTH in Jesus (Ephesians 4:21) must be acknowledged.

The Galatians had welcomed Paul and the message of salvation in Christ as if he had been an angel of God or Jesus Himself. (Galatians 4:14) Then they were led astray from the TRUTH. Paul wrote his letter to them to bring their focus back to the sufficiency of their relationship to Christ for salvation rather than becoming enslaved to the law.

As Paul tried to redirect them back to what he had taught them he asked?
"HAVE I THEN BECOME YOUR ENEMY BY TELLING YOU THE TRUTH"? (Galatians 4:16 ESV)

I saw a bumper sticker the other day which read: "Friends Don't Let Friends Go To Hell!" Have we befriended the TRUTH? If so, are we a friend enough to share that TRUTH with others who need to hear it? May we continue to live by the TRUTH and share the TRUTH of Jesus. Though some may view us as an enemy, a time will come when we will be revealed to have been the TRUEST friend one could possibly have; a friend both willing to speak and to live the TRUTH as it is in Jesus.

Have a great day BEING TRUE TO GOD?S WILL!

Heart Healthy!

There are many things which may ail people in this world. Physical afflictions of varying degrees of severity are experienced and usually appropriate treatment is sought out. However, in the midst of all this there is spiritual sickness that is often ignored. For a long time I have appreciated John’s hope for Gaius that his health would go well as it went well with his soul. (3 John 2) John placed the emphasis first on Gaius’ spiritual condition and secondarily on his physical. There is a more devastating HEART CONDITION than that of the flesh which needs to be continually monitored. When the physical heart gives out there is the loss of life, but the loss is of an eternal nature when it is the spiritual HEART CONDITION that has given out.

This morning I was struck by the following statement from the psalmist David.
“The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD. MAY YOUR HEARTS LIVE FOREVER!” (Psalm 22:26 ESV)

Along with a picture of eating and being satisfied is the mention of the heart living forever. There is a lot of attention today focused on eating heart healthy. The same should be considered spiritually. It is of eternal consequence to continually focus on a right relationship with our Lord.

Jesus stated…
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone EATS OF THIS BREAD, HE WILL LIVE FOREVER. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51 ESV)

How much are we focused on being partakers of the life of Christ? Are we continually seeking to take into our life that which will sustain a healthy HEART CONDITION before God? Though this world tends to be a powerful trend setter, we need to allow God to be our heart’s PACEMAKER. Our affections, aspirations, cravings, desires, hopes, longings, etc.; all need to be linked to His Will. Then, regardless of what happens to the body, through maintaining proper concern for our spiritual health we will be CONDITIONED for the eternal life we have been promised in Christ.

Have a great day SUSTAINED BY A HEART THAT WON’T QUIT!

Messing Up The Way!

Running or walking on uneven surfaces can be hazardous or at the least a hindrance to progress if caution is not exercised. As I walk around our town I encounter sidewalks and roads in various conditions. Yesterday I chose to walk a well maintained walking and biking trail which recently even had a section paved. I appreciated the smooth level surface. Walking there I was able to focus most on some thoughts I was developing rather than where my feet were being placed.

As John the Baptist was preparing THE WAY for Jesus, he was fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy of filling in the valleys and bringing low the mountains to create a LEVEL WAY on which to travel. (Luke 3:4-6; Isaiah 40:3-5). Jesus came as THE WAY (John 14:6) and many began to follow Him while others tried to impede the journey.

Saul (later to be called Paul) set his focus on persecuting and hindering those who belonged to “THE WAY”. (Acts 9:1-2) Eventually Paul began his own journey with “THE WAY” (Acts 24:14) and committed himself to leading others into it. Among those he taught were many in Galatia. They had accepted the message. However, after Paul had left, others came in hindering their progress and to Paul’s astonishment some of these brethren had turned to a different gospel that was actually no gospel at all. (read Galatians 1:6-9)

Paul admonished the brethren of Galatia…
“YOU WERE RUNNING WELL. WHO HINDERED YOU from obeying the truth?” (Galatians 5:7 ESV)

Why have I been drawing attention to such ideas as a path or WAY? The word translated “hindered” (ESV) in this verse is an interesting one. It is from “enkopto” which (according to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words) literally means “to cut into” (“en”, in, and “kopto”, to cut). We can imagine the difficulty in running a racing when someone cuts in on us. However, this word was one used to describe the impeding of a person’s progress by either breaking up the road or placing an obstacle in the way of the traveler. Thus the word became used for unnecessarily detaining another. In this passage, W. E. Vine points to the significance of Paul’s statement as being “who broke up the road along which you were traveling so well?”

Paul had taught and brought the Galatians into THE WAY of God; a life in Christ. They had begun the Christian race very well. Then they had allowed some to come in and dig up THE WAY on which they were traveling and lead them another direction. We also must guard against allowing others to do that to us today. There are many who teach error regarding Christ or with regard to THE WAY in which we ought to live. To be detoured either of those directions will hinder or completely halt the spiritual progress God desires for us. May we continue to diligently study so that we will not be hindered from continuing our journey in THE WAY of righteousness with Christ.

Have a great day REMAINING STEADFAST ON THE HEAVENWARD ROAD!

In Store!

Laying by in store is something people do for various reasons. There are some who talk about saving for a rainy day, even establishing a “rainy day” fund. Some STORE UP for others as Paul encouraged the Corinthian brethren to put aside money on the first day of every week, STORING IT UP as they had been prospered (1 Corinthians 16:2); funds which were to be used to help needy saints in Jerusalem. (1 Corinthians 16:1) Then there are others who STORE UP for themselves, like the rich fool Jesus told the parable about. (Luke 12:16-21)

Some people have placed their trust in their own wealth to their own destruction. (note Psalm 52:7 and Proverbs 11:28) Such is not what the heart is to be set upon. (Psalm 62:10) Perhaps we have observed many good fiscal planners, but how many of these have neglected spiritual planning? It is actually wrath some are STORING UP (Romans 2:5) due to a refusal to acknowledge and follow God’s Will.

How safe is that which we are STORING UP? Some people have gone to an account they had set aside only to be shocked to find their account had been drained by someone. All they had STORED UP was gone. What they STORED UP was not as safe as they thought.

Jesus pointed to the safest place to STORE UP the right treasure.
“(19) Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, (20) but LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES IN HEAVEN, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO.” (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV)

Paul also exhorted…
“(17) As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to SET THEIR HOPES on the uncertainty of riches, but ON GOD, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. (18) They are to DO GOOD, to BE RICH IN GOOD WORKS, to BE GENEROUS and READY TO SHARE, (19) THUS STORING UP TREASURE FOR THEMSELVES AS A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” (1 Timothy 6:17-19)

Those who do not properly plan with regard to spiritual things now will find they have something dreadful in store for them. However, as we maintain a proper spiritual perspective in Christ we can be assured that the treasure we have STORED UP is safe with Him.

Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE GREAT RETURN IN TRUSTING CHRIST!

With The Territory!

Life has its mists and sprinkles, but there are also the times that when it rains it pours. There is a country song which states, “I beg your pardon. I didn’t promise you a rose garden. Along with the sunshine there’s got to be a little rain some time.”

The relationships we develop in this life can pose their CHALLENGES. The same is true with our relationship to Jesus. When people are led to believe that once they accept Jesus as Lord all of life will be bliss, they are set up for disappointment when they become faced with CHALLENGES to their faith. Bear in mind that it is not an easy chair, but rather a cross which has become the symbol of Christianity. Jesus was quite honest with His disciples regarding the things they would face. (i.e. John 15:18-20; 16:1-2, & 33) In the relationship with Christ trials come with the territory.

In the midst of such CHALLENGES, the thing we must do is keep the focus on the bigger picture. In spite of Paul’s trials he maintained a proper perspective. Note his attitude as expressed in his letter to the church at Rome.

Paul wrote…
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are NOT WORTH COMPARING with the glory that is to be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18 ESV)

Yes, there are the CHALLENGES. These CHALLENGES help us grow and mature. (James 1:2-4) However, there are innumerable blessings too. Jesus does provide for abundant (John 10:10) living now and there is an “eternal glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17) to set our eyes upon. While we persevere in our faith, may we keep in view the blessed and glorious aspects of our relationship to Jesus that far outweigh anything else.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE GREATER PICTURE!

But It's Just...!

Imagine the glory that accompanied the beginning of the priesthood under the old law. Aaron and his sons were adorned in beautiful priestly garments. They were given the privilege of being intermediaries between the people and God. They were charged with a holy service. And as they were consecrated for their service to God, the glory of the Lord appeared to the people as the offering of Aaron was accepted. (Leviticus 9:23-24) What an awesome thing to have been able to behold. But…! Oh, how different life might be without the word “but”. Things were beginning well “but” then how quickly things can change.

In the very next chapter we read…
“(1) Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and OFFERED UNAUTHORIZED FIRE BEFORE THE LORD, which he had NOT COMMANDED them. (2) And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.” (Leviticus 10:1-2 ESV)

Some might say, “It was just fire. What difference did it make?” The New Living translation refers to it as “different” fire. What was it different from? The King James Version calls it “strange” fire. Was there something unusual about it? The English Standard Version’s rendering of “unauthorized” fire clearly cues us in that this fire was different than what God desired or had commanded. God’s response to the situation also reveals how serious He is with regard to His commands being carried out.

There are many who claim to believe in God yet live as though what God has said really makes no difference. Regardless of how small or simple something might appear to us, if God has spoken regarding it, who are we to think our way is better? If we think it to be a simple thing, why not just SIMPLY DO IT! Remember how Naaman at first refused to do the simple thing that he was told to do. It was just water! There were other rivers nearer his home! However, it was when Naaman was willing to submit to the message of God’s prophet Elisha that he received the benefit. (2 Kings 5:10-14)

God, in His great wisdom, has revealed to us that which will always bring about our greatest benefit. We may not understand the “why” with regard to all the commands of God. Nevertheless, what God has spoken is to be accepted. Any specific He has given He expects to be carried out. It may be “just” fire or “just” water, but if that is what He has commanded it is “just” what He expects to be done. May we always be ready to SIMPLY DO IT!

Have a great day FOCUSED TO DO GOD’S WILL!

Our Prayers!

Are we constantly mindful of the blessing and privilege we have in prayer? Though God is well aware of our needs and the varying situations of life (note Matthew 6:32), He has given us PRAYER as a means of placing a deliberate focus toward Him. Time spent in prayer reminds us of our dependence on God and reveals our desire to retain the close relationship with Him. However, what is the paramount focus of our personal prayers? Someone has said, “Prayer is something more than asking God to run errands for us.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] What is it to us?

There are some who seem to view prayer as a “panic button” when they find themselves in trouble. Others appear to see prayer as merely the means of presenting their “wish list” to God. Certainly God has given us prayer as a means of calling upon Him for His help and to petition Him with regard to needs, but is there another element that may be sometimes slighted?

Paul exhorted the church at Thessalonica to…
“(16) Rejoice always, (17) PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, (18) GIVE THANKS in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

And writing to Timothy, Paul urged…
“(1) First of all, then, I urge that SUPPLICATIONS, PRAYERS, INTERCESSIONS, and THANKSGIVINGS be made for all people, (2) for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV)

Do our prayers tend to be long on requests while short on THANKS? Our prayers may rightly focus on particular life circumstances, needs (both physical and spiritual) of others and ourselves, and for godly wisdom to be exercised by those in decision making and governing positions. However, while we are diligent in prayer with regard to these things we should be just as conscientious in remembering to THANK GOD for all that He has done, for His continued mindfulness of our life, and for the eternal hope we have in Christ! As Paul noted in both these letters, this is the “will of God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and is both “good” and “pleasing” (1 Timothy 2:3) in His sight.

Have a great day SUSTAINED BY A GRATITUDE ATTITUDE TOWARD GOD!

Chin Up!

There is so much which can get us down in this life if we allow it to do so. We see things going on around us we acknowledge as not being right, and though we try to stand for that which is, the world continues to do its own thing and go its own way. People become critical of our faith and values and also make statements that could discourage us. Sometimes we may even feel threatened while we strive to continue to remain faithful to God and His Will. However, remember we are not the only ones who have faced such challenges.

David was a man of God who faced many challenges and foes in his life. As we read through the Psalms we gain insight into his perspective that kept him moving forward in his faith in God. I was recently encouraged in my morning reading as I read the following words of David.

David wrote…
“(1) O LORD, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; (2) many are saying of my soul, there is no salvation for him in God. Selah (3) BUT YOU, O LORD, ARE A SHIELD ABOUT ME, MY GLORY, AND THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD.” (Psalm 3:1-3 ESV)

Do we continually look to God as our protector, knowing that His hand is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear our prayers? (Isaiah 59:1) Also, though there are many glorious aspects of life here, our greatest glory is that of our eternal connection with Him. He is our glory and the One Who can LIFT OUR HEAD UP, putting a joyful smile on our face in spite of what else may be going on around us. God is still God and He ultimately remains in control.

Further into the Psalms David wrote…
“(19) Blessed be the Lord who DAILY BEARS US UP; GOD IS OUR SALVATION. (20) Our GOD IS A GOD OF SALVATION, and to GOD, the Lord, BELONG DELIVERANCES from death.” (Psalm 68:19-20 ESV)

May we, like David, continually keep our eyes on God. That is an UPWARD GAZE! When we find ourselves beginning to look down, let us think of His great love and power for us, letting Him LIFT OUR HEAD UP as we remember the glorious eternal future He is bring us victoriously toward.

Have a great day LIVING WITH HEART AND MIND FOCUSED HEAVENWARD!

Freedom!

Freedom! For it, wars have been fought. To retain it, lives have been given! It is loved! It is cherished! It is something we do not want to lose! We enjoy the fact we live in the “Land of the FREE and the home of the brave” as our national anthem declares! This country was traveled to in order to gain FREEDOM. Our government was established to ensure FREEDOM.
However, today is the focus on that FREEDOM the same?

Some have set their focus on FREEDOM FROM. They seek to gain and retain FREEDOM from persecution, high taxation, religion, etc. Others set their focus on FREEDOM TO. They desire FREEDOM to do their own thing, to have whatever vocation they desire, to be their own boss, to choose their own life-style, whatever they desire, etc. Some do not want to have any limitations dictated. And still others focus on FREEDOM OF. They desire FREEDOM of religion, of expression and speech, etc. And here also is often the desire to have no limitations imposed. The glorious FREEDOM we have in Christ, however, is of a higher nature and greater impact and consequence than what our United States Constitution could ever provide.

Freedom does have its limits. Paul stated...
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only DO NOT USE YOUR FREEDOM AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FLESH, but through love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13 ESV)

And Peter stated...
“Live as people who are free, NOT USING YOUR FREEDOM AS A COVER-UP FOR EVIL, but living as servants of God.” (1 Peter 2:16 ESV)

We must understand these limitations are for our benefit. Within FREEDOM there is still the need for guidelines. FREEDOM does not eliminate a distinction between right and wrong, though the choice is still there from which to choose. FREEDOM is to be exercised wisely.

The greatest FREEDOM we have is the FREEDOM FROM sin and its consequences. Jesus gave His life to provide that FREEDOM.

Jesus said...
“(35) The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. (36) So IF THE SON SETS YOU FREE, YOU WILL BE FREE INDEED.”
(John 8:35-36 ESV)

And Paul stated...
“(1) There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life HAS SET YOU FREE IN CHRIST JESUS FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.” (Romans 8:1-2 ESV)

And we therefore have FREEDOM TO confidently approach God as Paul encouraged...
“(10) so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. (11) This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, (12) in whom WE HAVE BOLDNESS AND ACCESS WITH CONFIDENCE through our faith in him.” (Ephesians 3:10-12)

Thank God for the FREEDOM He has made possible! There is no other like it!

Have a great day APPRECIATING AND WISELY EXERCISING THIS BLESSING IN CHRIST!

Power Passages! (11 of 11)

We have dreams. We envision goals. We imagine works we would like to accomplish in our lifetime. We develop mental images of ways the Lord may use us. And if we have the openness and willingness toward those things that is wonderful. But the most awesome thing about this is what God may desire and is able to do even beyond those dreams.

Paul elevated the focus with these encouraging words:
“(20) Now TO HIM WHO IS ABLE TO DO FAR MORE ABUNDANTLY than all that we ask or think, ACCORDING TO THE POWER AT WORK WITHIN US, (21) to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV)

Do you believe that? Do I? God is able to do not just more, but ABUNDANTLY MORE than all we may ask or imagine. And this is connected to HIS POWER He is ready and willing to work within us! WOW!

So go ahead and dream! Go ahead and imagine! Then let us allow God to EMPOWER us and do in and through us the POWERFUL work He desires to do. As His purposes will prevail (Proverbs 19:21), may we allow them to be done through us!

Praise God for His awesome POWER CONNECTION!

Have a great day REMAINING PLUGGED INTO GOD’S POWER!

Power Passages! (10 of 11)

To POWER appliances and other things requiring an energy source we must have them plugged into an adequate POWER supply. You could not start your car with a AAA battery. Nor could you POWER a refrigerator with a nine volt battery. God, the Creator of life, offers the POWER adequate to sustain it.

Peter encouraged with these words:
“(3) HIS DIVINE POWER HAS GRANTED TO US ALL THINGS THAT PERTAIN TO LIFE AND GODLINESS, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (4) by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them YOU MAY BECOME PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE, HAVING ESCAPED FROM THE CORRUPTION THAT IS IN THE WORLD BECAUSE OF SINFUL DESIRE.” (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

Life in its fullness and godliness in its depth of character comes by DIVINE POWER which provides all that is necessary to sustain them. It is this POWER which brings the renewal of God’s Divine nature into our being and provides the escape from the corrupt tendencies of this world.

May we praise God for His every provision (physical and spiritual) and trust in the adequacy of His DIVINE POWER!

Have a great day EMPOWERED FOR LIFE AND GODLINESS!

Power Passages! (9 of 11)

Sunscreen! Sunglasses! Umbrellas! Safety glasses! Armor! Bullet-proof vests! What do these have in common? They all provide a protective SHIELD against something. Protection from the elements. Protection from flying objects. Protection from life-threatening forces. Life presents many situations where some type of protection is required.

Peter encouraged:
“(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4) to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, (5) who BY GOD’S POWER ARE BEING GUARDED THROUGH FAITH for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:3-5 ESV)

By His POWER we are “GUARDED” (ESV) or “SHIELDED” (NIV). There is only so much we can do to protect ourselves and those we love. The Psalmist frequently referred to God using such terms as “fortress”, “shield”, “stronghold”, etc. and we should view Him as such today. God’s POWER is extended as a SHIELD to protect us that we may be assured of receiving the eternal blessings promised to those who are His. His POWER uplifts us by the assurance of a “living hope” connected to an “inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.” God has reserved it for us and He has promised to SHIELD us until our salvation has come in its completeness.

Have a great day knowing you are SHIELDED BY GOD’S POWER!
