Understanding!
Solomon stated…
“A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.” ( Proverbs 14:6 ESV)
It may seem strange to think of a scoffer seeking wisdom, for in their scoffing that is what they often reject. Part of the challenge for the scoffer is that they either look for wisdom in the wrong places or perhaps consider they already have it and therefore reject whatever does not match what they already think they understand. In this way scoffers limit their own ability to learn more.
Solomon also warned…
“Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” ( Proverbs 26:12 ESV)
Many of the Jewish leaders who continued to hound Jesus with questions (i.e. Matthew 22:15, 23, 34-35), were really not SEEKING knowledge. They scoffed at His teaching and tried to trap Him in it. The only thing they seemed to learn was when they best not ask Jesus any more questions. ( Matthew 22:46)
It is the understanding who know where to SEEK wisdom, first of all by recognizing it is not within themselves. When we ask questions do we do so to make a point or to learn something. When we search the Scriptures do we SEEK only that which will prove “our” point or are we continually SEEKING the wisdom God has preserved in those pages? Just as a scoffer will limit his ability to understand situations of life, so it will be when he opens God’s book. However, the one who truly and honestly SEEKS to gain wisdom from above will be able to find it there, for such is the promise for the TRUE SEEKERS. (note Matthew 7:7) May that characterize our quest.
Have a great day KEEPING EARS, EYES, AND HEART OPEN TO GOD!
