Memorial Days! (1 of 2)
Some people constantly look back at MEMORIAL events and days. Some hope to live MEMORIAL lives. We may be looking toward a MEMORIAL eternity. How much of our life is encompassed by MEMORIALS?
When it comes to setting up memorials, there are some which are fancy and beautiful, while others seem to be composed of very simple items. Yet if they serve the purpose of reminding, then they are adequate.
As Israel prepared to cross over into the Promised Land, instructions were given for the purpose of the occasion being remembered for generations to come.
We read…
“(4) Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. (5) And Joshua said to them, ‘Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, (6) that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘WHAT DO THOSE STONES MEAN TO YOU?’ (7) then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So THESE STONES SHALL BE TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL A MEMORIAL FOREVER.” ( Joshua 4:4-7 ESV)
A pile of rocks! Have you ever seen one? It was something available to make a monument. It was also something that would not be so glorious as to become an object of worship. But it was to be an adequate REMINDER to the nation of God’s fulfilled promise in bringing them into the land He had promised. God’s deliverance, guidance, and provision was to be remembered on down through the generations. It was a MEMORABLE occasion. It was a DAY to be REMEMBERED! And it would stand as a REMINDER of the reason God could be trusted through each day He would provide.
May we, as we read through the pages of Scripture, be encouraged in our faith by God’s great track record of faithfulness. God is still the great Deliverer! He is still the Guide for life! And He is the Provider of all good things!
Have a great DAY IN REMEMBRANCE OF GOD’S GOODNESS!
