Memorial Days! (2 of 2)

Do you have something that is a reminder of an event or milestone in your life? I have several things. One simple item is a plastic fork saved from my first scuba dive when I was in high school. Some people have buildings or towers erected as reminders of memorable events or people. Yet, it doesn’t matter what the structure or item might be (big or small) if the reason for it is forgotten.

Paul reminded the Corinthian brethren of a MEMORIAL they were to observe on a regular basis.
“(23) For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, (24) and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in REMEMBRANCE of me.’ (25) In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in REMEMBRANCE of me.’ (26) For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. ” (1 Corinthians 11:23-26 ESV)

The MEMORIAL of the greatest event associated with our eternal salvation is composed of the simple items of bread and fruit of the vine. The objects used for the Lord’s Supper are simple items which were such as would not eliminate the partaking by anyone, rich or poor. The two items were readily available. What was to hinder this regular observance of the greatest sacrifice and provision for our redemption? Yet, even as we participate in this MEMORIAL on the first day of the week, our focus must go beyond the simple items to all of which they are to be a constant REMINDER. Jesus gave His life for our salvation. This MEMORIAL has significance to us because we have a relationship with the Lord. And as we continue to partake and REMEMBER we are making a proclamation of our faith in Him as we look forward to His coming.

The Lord’s Supper. Such simple items. But what powerful truths flood our minds as we share in it.

Have a great day DAILY REMEMBERING THE LORD’S GREATEST GIFT!

Memorial Days! (1 of 2)

Some people constantly look back at MEMORIAL events and days. Some hope to live MEMORIAL lives. We may be looking toward a MEMORIAL eternity. How much of our life is encompassed by MEMORIALS?

When it comes to setting up memorials, there are some which are fancy and beautiful, while others seem to be composed of very simple items. Yet if they serve the purpose of reminding, then they are adequate.

As Israel prepared to cross over into the Promised Land, instructions were given for the purpose of the occasion being remembered for generations to come.

We read…
“(4) Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. (5) And Joshua said to them, ‘Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, (6) that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘WHAT DO THOSE STONES MEAN TO YOU?’ (7) then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So THESE STONES SHALL BE TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL A MEMORIAL FOREVER.” (Joshua 4:4-7 ESV)

A pile of rocks! Have you ever seen one? It was something available to make a monument. It was also something that would not be so glorious as to become an object of worship. But it was to be an adequate REMINDER to the nation of God’s fulfilled promise in bringing them into the land He had promised. God’s deliverance, guidance, and provision was to be remembered on down through the generations. It was a MEMORABLE occasion. It was a DAY to be REMEMBERED! And it would stand as a REMINDER of the reason God could be trusted through each day He would provide.

May we, as we read through the pages of Scripture, be encouraged in our faith by God’s great track record of faithfulness. God is still the great Deliverer! He is still the Guide for life! And He is the Provider of all good things!

Have a great DAY IN REMEMBRANCE OF GOD’S GOODNESS!

He Must Be It!

As Paul attempted to move the view of some in Rome from seeking to obtain righteousness through observing the Jewish Law to recognizing the adequacy of the provision of salvation in Christ (i.e. Romans 8:3-4), he pointed to the need for recognizing the LORDSHIP of Jesus! That LORDSHIP is to be believed within the heart and acknowledged verbally. (Romans 10:9-10) Just as it is with regard to sin that all (Jews and Greeks or Jews and Gentiles) are in the same boat (Romans 3:9), so it is with regard to acknowledging Jesus’ LORDSHIP.

Paul unequivocally stated…
“For there is NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN JEW AND GREEK; the SAME LORD IS LORD OF ALL, bestowing his riches on ALL WHO CALL ON HIM.” (Romans 10:12 ESV)

It is not all who call upon the Law. Neither is it all who call upon themselves. It is those who call on the LORD. According to the next verse (Romans 10:13), “everyone” who does so will be saved. (Bear in mind, according to Romans 6:3, Paul was addressing baptized believers here.) However, Jesus had stated that “not everyone” who said to Him, “Lord, Lord”
would enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 7:21) Do we have a contradiction of Scripture? No! The LORDSHIP of Jesus must be given more than mere verbal acknowledgment. Jesus went on to point out the need of “doing the will” of the Father. Therefore, to call on the Name of the LORD is to truly acknowledge Him as BEING LORD of our life.

If we truly acknowledge the LORDSHIP of Jesus our focus must move away from our own desires as we willingly accept His for our life. He is the one to call the shots. Just saying His Name and labeling our actions with it does not make our works (regardless of how good they might be) His Will. (Matthew 7:22-23) The focus of our life must be ON HIM! He is the One to sit on the throne of our heart! He is to be held as Sovereign over all our wishes and desires. He is the One to be in complete charge of our life.

What is our life saying about the LORDSHIP of Jesus? Who do our choices reflect as truly being in charge? We could have no better Master than He Who has our ultimate good and eternal blessings in mind, having provided adequately for His riches to become ours. May we let Jesus have the place in our life that is rightfully His, allowing His Will to always prevail in our daily walk onward toward a glorious eternity with Him.

Have a great day LIVING A CHRIST MASTERED LIFE!

Live With Integrity!

Do you ever wonder what has happened to integrity in daily life? So much cheating and dishonesty goes on today that in some circles it is almost expected. It has been a problem for a long time among mankind. As we read through the Old Testament we find even God’s prophets, priests, and kings did not always live with integrity. (i.e. Jeremiah 5:31) As Paul wrote to Timothy he made reference to a time of the lack of integrity coming. (note 2 Timothy 3:1-4) Read the list Paul presented and consider how closely it fits our society today.

Solomon noted…
“WHOEVER WALKS IN INTEGRITY WALKS SECURELY, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” (Proverbs 10:9 ESV)

As children of God, integrity is something the world should see being exhibited in our life. It is a SECURE position to take. To walk with integrity we don’t have to worry about being found out or how to keep our stories straight. We can feel SECURE knowing with certainty what we have said and done. To walk in integrity we can also walk in a SECURE relationship with the God Who knows all that goes on within us as we continually aim to do what is right.

Paul was one whose aim was to always live before both God and man in all good conscience. (Acts 24:16) May we also choose to shun the crooked and twisted ways of the world and walk in integrity before God and all those we meet.

Have a great day LIVING TO BE FOUND TRUE!

Time And Place?

For us to remember and be faithful in attending set times for assembly and worship together is important. The Hebrew writer exhorted his readers to not forsake their assembling together because it was an opportunity not only to WORSHIP, but to “stir up one another to love and good works” and encourage each other. (Hebrews 10:23-25) However, is that the extent of our WORSHIP as if it were controlled by a switch we turned on and off in accordance with some schedule?

Someone has urged, “Our worship should not be confined to times and places; it should be the spirit of our life.” [source: sentence sermons]

Isn’t that what Paul implied when he wrote the following?
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to PRESENT YOUR BODIES AS A LIVING SACRIFICE, holy and acceptable to God, WHICH IS YOUR SPIRITUAL WORSHIP.” (Romans 12:1 ESV)

Any time and any place our life is to be lived in WORSHIP to God. A worshipful spirit is exhibited in our life as we seek to please God and uphold His standard in the choices of activities in which we involve ourselves. Retaining the regular habit of times and places together for WORSHIP should not be neglected. However, let us not limit the WORSHIP of our lives to only a few hours a week. May it truly be the spirit in which we live every hour of our life before God.

Have a great day OF LIVING PRAISE TO GOD!

Other Obligations!

We all have obligations. Though some try to shirk them or push them on to others, we must recognize the obligations we individually must accept. It is also true that some become obligated to the wrong things. They get sucked in and are somehow made to feel THEY OWE it to another (or to some thing) to please them. As we look at our own life do we feel a sense of obligation to the right things? To what (whom) do we feel we OWE for the life we have?

As Paul made a distinction between living according to the Spirit and living according to the flesh, he exhorted…
“So then brothers, WE ARE DEBTORS, NOT TO THE FLESH, to live according to the flesh.” (Romans 8:12 ESV)

Paul implied we all have an obligation to fulfill. The Greek word he used here is “opheiletai” (from opheiletes) and is translated in our English versions as either a debt (being a debtor) or obligation. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testaments Words points to the primary use of this word as being with regard to money. However, it is also used metaphorically for a person who is under an obligation to do something. Paul even used this word to describe the obligation he felt for preaching the gospel. (Romans 1:14) Having receive that message of salvation himself, he felt he OWED it to God and to others to share it.

We are DEBTORS and have an obligation, but note that Paul stated it is not to be to “the flesh”! Should we not feel the greatest sense of INDEBTEDNESS to what (whom) has brought the greatest benefit to our life? It is the flesh which has brought trouble into our lives. On the other hand it is the Spirit of God that has brought transformation and the power to sustain life now and for eternity.

Perhaps the question we most need to ask ourselves is: What has us? Think about it. Does the flesh have us under its thumb or does God’s Spirit have us? To what do we feel most obligated to please?

Paul went on to point out…
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die, BUT IF BY THE SPIRIT YOU PUT TO DEATH THE DEEDS OF THE BODY, YOU WILL LIVE.” (Romans 8:13 ESV)

With the privilege of “sonship” (Romans 8:14-17) comes responsibility. We OWE it to the One Who adopted us to live after His likeness in accordance with His Will. Since God, through the Son, has done for us what the Law could not do (Romans 8:3-4) -- freeing us from sin and death -- we should feel a great sense of INDEBTEDNESS to Him.

There are some things we should not do simply because we have “other obligations”; those associated with the Spirit of God. May we daily focus on walking according to the Spirit (Romans 8:4) while we continually set our minds on the things of the Spirit (Romans 8:5) so that we may please the Father and receive the life He desires to provide. It is to Him we truly OWE everything!

Have a great day LIVING TO PLEASE GOD!

Things Not Always As Seen!

There was a farmer driving along a winding country road who had to suddenly swerve and stop to keep from being hit by a woman coming around a curve on the wrong side of the road. Before he had a chance to yell at her, she stuck her head out the window of her car and shouted, “Pig!” Furious, the farmer yelled back, “OLD SOW!” and began driving on. Rounding the next curve he slammed on his brakes. There in the middle of the road stood the largest pig he’d ever seen.

Coming to the wrong conclusion with regard to what seems to be can be quite embarrassing. Oh, how sheepish this farmer must have felt upon recognizing his misunderstanding of the warning regarding a pig. However, holding the wrong perspective can also be deadly in either a physical or (more drastically) a spiritual sense.

Solomon cautioned…
“There is a way that SEEMS RIGHT to a man, BUT ITS END IS THE WAY TO DEATH.” (Proverbs 14:12 ESV)

And…
“There is a way that SEEMS RIGHT to a man, BUT ITS END IS THE WAY TO DEATH.” (Proverbs 16:25 ESV)

Yes, Solomon’s warning was recorded twice. It is worth repeating. Choosing our own path there is no telling what we will find around the corner. Too many people have chosen a way that seems good and right to them, not realizing the dangers that lay along the way and the ultimate destiny to which it leads.

Solomon encouraged…
“IN THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IS LIFE, AND IN ITS PATHWAY THERE IS NO DEATH.” (Proverbs 12:28 ESV)

It is of paramount importance for us to continually seek to be certain THE WAY we have chosen is THE WAY of God. It is only THE WAY of God that is THE WAY of life! His WAY leads through abundant living (John 10:10) now and eternal life to come. Let us be careful regarding “what seems” and diligently seek to know “what is” as God has revealed it. THE WAY of God will always prove right!

Have a great day REMAINING IN THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS!

The Steam!

It is often counter-PRODUCTIVE when we get steamed at others and vent it. However, when we consider the idea of “getting up steam” to do something, that is usually an indication something PRODUCTIVE is going to take place.

Someone has said, “There is a lot of difference between getting up steam and being full of hot air.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E.C. McKenzie]

Getting up steam must be more than mere talk of what we can or could do. When someone continually makes boasts with no follow through it is a sign they are only full of hot air, possessing no apparent power to motivate PRODUCTIVITY.

Solomon stated…
“Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who BOASTS OF A GIFT HE DOES NOT GIVE.” (Proverbs 25:14 ESV)

Just as it would be frustrating for a farmer to continue to see clouds coming and get no rain for the crops, so it is when people make various boasts and do not follow through. Whether it be an actual gift or the gift of our time and energy, to be all talk and no action benefits no one.

Christianity is to be a life of action, not passive belief. James indicated faith is made evident by our works. (James 2:18-22) Our religion must be more than mere words.

Note James illustration of the need to go beyond words.
“(15) If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, (16) and one of you SAYS to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ WITHOUT GIVING them the things needed for the body, WHAT GOOD IS THAT? (17) So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:15-17 ESV)

There is much that is to accompany our faith to aid us in living effective and PRODUCTIVE lives to the glory of God. (note 2 Peter 1:5-8) As we continue in our Christian walk we must get up steam for daily godly living in service to others. May the fire of our faith continue to build up steam to motivate us toward a PRODUCTIVE demonstration of a deep and abiding faith in God and His Will. If we are going to get all steamed up about (or by) something, let it be in actions committed to the glory of our God.

Have a great day EFFECTIVELY POWERED BY FAITH’S FIRE!

Knowing Where We Now Stand!

In the struggle with sin, even Christians at times wonder regarding their salvation. Though we must be mindful of not viewing the blessing of God’s grace as license for sin (Romans 6:1; Jude 4), as we walk in Christ do we question the power of His blood to deal adequately with our sins? John wrote encouraging Christians to realize they could know they had eternal life. (1 John 5:13) To really know we are saved provides powerful encouragement to help us persevere as we go through the varying experiences of this life.

Paul very explicitly stated…
“THERE IS THEREFORE NOW NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS.” (Romans 8:1 ESV)

What a wonderful verse! What an encouraging verse! It is a truth intended to remove the fear of God’s judgment. Read it again.
“THERE IS THEREFORE NOW NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS.”

As we consider the significance of what this verse reveals, what is one of the most encouraging words in it? To me the most encouraging word is “NOW”! The Greek is “nun” which is a word used of time, representing the immediate present. Living in Christ NOW we are PRESENTLY removed from under God’s condemnation. The blood of Christ has cleansed us completely and we are NOW a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) in Him.

Those who refuse to believe in Jesus are not merely condemned at some later time. According to our Lord’s own words they stand condemned already. (read John 3:18) For one to live outside of Christ, that is PRESENTLY the verdict. That is why we ought to be reaching out to others to draw them to Christ that they too may become a child of God by putting on Christ in baptism. (Galatians 3:26-27)

In Christ Jesus we are NOW PRESENTLY in a sphere of safety, provided we remain in Him. Therefore, let us remain standing in Him NOW so that any fear of future judgment may be removed. (1 John 4:17-18) PRESENTLY living and walking in Christ we can have this confidence.

Have a great day RELISHING THE PRESENT RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST!

Cleanliness of Life!

Some Pharisees questioned Jesus regarding His disciples after seeing them eat with unwashed hands. (Matthew 15:1-2) Jesus took these leaders to task over how they had upheld their traditions while at the same time would set aside God’s Law. (Matthew 15:3-9) It wasn’t that washing hands was not a good idea before eating. We understand its significance today in keeping from spreading disease, especially when handling food. The problem was that this washing had become a “religious” requirement before eating and was seen as the means to keep from defiling oneself spiritually. Jesus, continuing to talk with the people tried to help them understand it was not what went into the mouth, but what came out of the mouth that defiled a person. (Matthew 15:10-11) Jesus pointed to the mouth as both the instrument of taking in food and of conversation. Peter then asked for even further explanation to which Jesus responded that the basic principle of food is it passes the lips, goes into the stomach, and then is expelled from the body. (Matthew 15:16-17) However, the thing that can defile is what comes back out FROM THE HEART. Jesus then listed a number of things that flow from the heart that reveal an individual is impure. (Matthew 15:18-20)

Our digestive system hopefully functions smoothly, just the way God created it to. However, we must be even more concerned that our HEART (spiritual focus) is functioning as God intended. Though we ought to give thought to eating healthily (which includes in moderation), it is the heart condition that determines whether or not we have become defiled. It’s not so much a matter of food or the washing of hands as it is what “PROCEEDS FROM THE HEART.” (Matthew 15:17 ESV)

What is our paramount focus in life? Are we more concerned with bodily cleanliness than we are with purity of heart? Do we have washing rituals we are diligent in carrying out while we neglect the same diligence regarding the condition of our HEART?

Paul, attempting to get the Corinthian brethren to focus on what mattered most exhorted…
“‘Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food’ -- and God will destroy both one and the other. THE BODY IS not MEANT for sexual immorality, but FOR THE LORD, and the LORD FOR THE BODY.” (1 Corinthians 6:13 ESV)

Cleanliness may be close to godliness, but it is not godliness. It is possible for the body to be clean and diet to be good while the heart is full of uncleanness! If we continue to be more diligent regarding focusing the HEART and what is done with our body as being meant “for the Lord”, we will be steered away from that which does defile. May our religion truly be the uniting of our HEART with God!

Have a great day MAINTAINING A HEART RESERVOIR OF GODLINESS FROM WHICH TO DRAW!

CSI!

My wife and I feel there is a lot of television not worth watching. However, we have been hooked by the CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) programs. My wife is able to watch more of them than I due to some of my other evening activities and the episodes that are later than we wish to stay up are taped for watching at a more convenient time. These programs include CSI:LAS VEGAS, CSI:MIAMI, CSI:NY (New York), and NCIS (Navy Crime Investigation Services). The investigations to solve the crimes on these programs deal with such things as fingernail scrapings, hair samples, mouth swabs, DNA, fingerprints, and even the minutest of blood traces, etc. Sometimes the crimes are solved with very little evidence to go on while other times there is plenty of evidence to collect and analyze. Some of the crime scenes are found to have FINGERPRINTS all over them.

When it comes to believing in God, some deny that there is any evidence while others recognize there is plenty of it. One of the many areas to consider is the world and universe in which we live. To honestly consider even the minutest details in this CSI (Creation Scene Investigation) can we not see that GOD’S FINGERPRINTS are all over it?

The psalmist David asserted…
“The heavens DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD and the sky above PROCLAIMS HIS HANDIWORK.” (Psalm 19:1 ESV)

Paul also declared…
“(19) For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. (20) For HIS INVISIBLE ATTRIBUTES, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, IN THE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20 ESV)

As we look at creation and all of life, it should be easy to see GOD’S FINGERPRINTS are all over it. Those who do not see have dismissed evidence that should be clearly seen as admissible in the investigation. To ignore the evidence God has left to be found will always skew the conclusions. May we continue to allow the evidence to speak for itself.

Have a great day STRUCK BY THE EVIDENCE OF GOD CREATION DECLARES!

What's Happening Within?

In the summer of 1979, as I was working with the church in Toledo, Washington, we had a congregational campout at the beautiful and serene Spirit Lake in the shadow of majestic Mount Saint Helens. It was such a calm setting for our personal reflection and worship together. There in the PEACEFUL midst of part of God’s grand creation we were able to withdraw from the otherwise hectic demands of life.

That winter we took our young people to play in the beautiful white snow up at the turnaround on the mountain. She seemed so majestic and PEACEFUL as we played together in fresh snow. But in a few months that all quickly changed.

The violent eruption of Mount Saint Helens (23 years ago today) was not due to any elements without. Rather, there was something unsettling going on within. Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, as we were heading toward the church building, the unrest within the mountain broke lose with a power that is hard to describe. The side of the mountain gave way, the large ash plume billowed into the sky with flashes of lightning generated within it.
However, the cloud got high enough that it ended up blowing the other direction. (We received the ash fallout, waking up to pitch dark the following weekend with the second major eruption.)

Unsettled within! Isn’t it the same with us? Is it not more what is happening within us, rather than any conflict without, that determines whether we are at peace of not? Anger, worry, desires focused on the wrong things, etc. -- all that creates unrest, discontent, and a lack of PEACE in our life? Jesus told the disciples that they would have troubles in this world, but could still have HIS PEACE. (John 16:33) HIS PEACE can be experienced even when there are conflicts in the world around us because HIS PEACE is an inside job to calm the unrest that might otherwise be there. In our relationship with Him, as we continue to acknowledge His sovereignty and the fact He has overcome the world (John 16:33), there should be a calming affect on our life. It is a PEACE that is to affect, from within, how we respond and react to what is going on around us.

To the Colossian church, Paul exhorted…
“And LET THE PEACE OF CHRIST RULE IN YOUR HEARTS, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15 ESV)

The Greek word Paul used which is translated “rule” is in the imperative. It is to happen. It must take place. It is a word (brabeuo) which literally points to one acting as an umpire (brabeus) to arbitrate or decide. Sometimes we need to hear the whistle blow, to stop the play, to provide a moment to calmly consider our move or get back into life’s game as God intended it to be lived. The PEACE of Christ is to decide between all we face in a way that we, calmly within, can take note of what truly matters. We are then enabled to move on in a way that reveals our utmost trust is in His sovereignty and we are at PEACE in our relationship with Him. The mind and heart are not to be set on the world’s conflicts, but rather above, on Christ where He is seated as the Authority over all. (Colossians 3:1-2) We, in Him, have the assurance of victory; a truth which should have a great calming affect within us.

May HIS PEACE, not the world’s (John 14:27), be the rule -- the umpire -- as we go about our daily lives. It is the PEACE our Lord desires to be instilled in our life presently. May we truly be at rest in HIS PEACE.

Have a great day TRULY EXPERIENCING THE PEACE THAT SURPASSES UNDERSTANDING! (Philippians 4:7)

Awesome Power!

May 18, 1980 was the day of an AWESOME event I will never forget. We lived in Winlock, Washington while I was working with the church in Toledo, Washington. These two towns are across the freeway (Interstate 5) from each other. The overpass which crosses Interstate 5 between the two towns was a great vantage point from which to watch Mt. Saint Helen's spew steam. We happened to be crossing that overpass the Sunday morning of May 18, 1980 just as the mountain blew, sending ash high into the air, causing one side of the mountain to slide down into what had been beautiful Spirit Lake, and then giving us an awesome display of lightening shooting through that hot ash plume which was heading toward us. However, the ash plume went high enough to be caught by winds which took it the other direction. It was a spectacular display of power as well as devastation to the areas hit by the hot blast and covered by the massive mud flow that went down through the Toutle River valley. The following Sunday, May 25, was the second major eruption which this time left us waking up to pitch dark as the ash fallout blocked out the sun's light.

Events such as this tend to cause us to sit up and take notice. There is AWESOME POWER in this Creation God brought into being and placed us in. But the power of nature displayed that day is still nothing compared to God's power to change our lives and redeem us for eternity! Therefore, it is in Him we continue to trust to see us through this life -- whatever we might experience. He has the POWER and it is MOST AWESOME!

The Psalmist wrote:
“(1) God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(2) Therefore WE WILL NOT FEAR though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, (3) though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.” (Psalm 46:1-3 ESV)

Find comfort in the fact we serve an AWESOME GOD who has AWESOME POWER and loves us with an AWESOME LOVE that extends to us AWESOME MERCY and an AWESOME GRACE that makes us the recipients of AWESOME PROMISES! What an AWESOME THOUGHT!

Have an AWESOME DAY!

Praise The Lord!

God commanded and His creation came into being. (Psalm 148:5) In Psalm 148, the psalmist urged for God to be praised as all of His creation does so. God’s creation praises Him by EXHIBITING THE POWER He placed within it and FULFILLING THE PURPOSES for which it was created.

Included in the verses of this psalm we read…
“(11) Kings of the earth and ALL PEOPLES, princes and all rulers of the earth! (12) YOUNG MEN and MAIDENS together, OLD MEN and CHILDREN! (13) LET THEM PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD, for HIS NAME alone is exalted; HIS MAJESTY is above earth and heaven.” (Psalm 148:11-13 ESV)

Praising God! Something for all of us to do! How well are we joining in chorus with the rest of God’s creation? How well is HIS POWER being exhibited in our daily lives? Is it HIS PURPOSES or our own others see dominating our activities?

As I write this it is about 8:32 in the morning. You may wonder what significance there is in that. It was about this time, twenty-five years ago today, that we were on our way to the church building in Toledo, Washington where I preached and witnessed the POWER OF GOD’S CREATION; the eruption of Mount Saint Helens. There has been a lot of focus planned for this week in the area affected by that eruption and especially for today being the twenty-fifth anniversary of that event. Over the years our family has shared our stories of what we saw and experienced; an event we will never forget. God’s creation is truly awesome in its exhibiting of God’s design and power.

It is also amazing to now see the renewal of life in an area that was so devastated twenty-five years ago. The RENEWAL OF LIFE God makes possible for us (2 Corinthians 3:18; 4:16) is another one of the many blessings for which we should ever praise God!

Over the next two days I will be sending out two previous “teEn-MAIL” focuses which were drawn from the remembrance of the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. However, for today, read through Psalm 148 and reflect on all that comes to mind for which God is worthy of the daily praise of OUR LIFE.

Have a great day LIVING TO REVEAL GOD’S POWER AND PURPOSE!

Understanding!

Solomon stated…
“A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.” (Proverbs 14:6 ESV)

It may seem strange to think of a scoffer seeking wisdom, for in their scoffing that is what they often reject. Part of the challenge for the scoffer is that they either look for wisdom in the wrong places or perhaps consider they already have it and therefore reject whatever does not match what they already think they understand. In this way scoffers limit their own ability to learn more.

Solomon also warned…
“Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” (Proverbs 26:12 ESV)

Many of the Jewish leaders who continued to hound Jesus with questions (i.e. Matthew 22:15, 23, 34-35), were really not SEEKING knowledge. They scoffed at His teaching and tried to trap Him in it. The only thing they seemed to learn was when they best not ask Jesus any more questions. (Matthew 22:46)

It is the understanding who know where to SEEK wisdom, first of all by recognizing it is not within themselves. When we ask questions do we do so to make a point or to learn something. When we search the Scriptures do we SEEK only that which will prove “our” point or are we continually SEEKING the wisdom God has preserved in those pages? Just as a scoffer will limit his ability to understand situations of life, so it will be when he opens God’s book. However, the one who truly and honestly SEEKS to gain wisdom from above will be able to find it there, for such is the promise for the TRUE SEEKERS. (note Matthew 7:7) May that characterize our quest.

Have a great day KEEPING EARS, EYES, AND HEART OPEN TO GOD!

How About Tomorrow?

The story has been told of a meeting by a group of Satan’s angels in Hell. They were discussing what each thought might by the most effective means of deceiving and destroying the souls of men. One of these dark spirits arose and declared, “I know the best way to accomplish our task. We will go to the earth and tell mankind they cannot trust their Bibles, that it is only a collection of myths and certainly not the Word of God.” A second arose and spoke: “No, that will not do it. We must go to the earth and tell mankind that there is no God, no Savior, no Heaven, and no Hell.” The council of Hell agreed that such a plan was wise, however, a third representative arose to speak. “No my brothers of the curse, your plan is sure to fail. Mankind can look at the creation and know there is a God as its Creator and that a Savior there must surely be also. In time they will come to know that a Heaven or Hell awaits all men and angels, and it will do no good to tell them they cannot believe the Bible, for believe they will in spite of our best efforts to deceive. No, we must go to the earth and tell them there is a God and a Savior, that there is a Heaven and Hell, and we will tell them they can trust their Bibles, but then we will tell them that tomorrow is soon enough to believe and obey!” And so the fiendish plot was set in motion and today mankind is being lulled into Hell believing that there is always time enough to do the bidding of God. Today we find that unbelief may be slaying its thousands, but it is PROCRASTINATION that is taking the lives and souls of tens of thousands. [adapted]

After being arrested in Jerusalem and then taken to Caesarea to appear before Governor Felix, Paul had the opportunity to speak with this Roman governor regarding faith in Christ. However, the response of Felix reflected the problem of PROCRASTINATION.

We read…
“And as he [Paul] reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, ‘Go away for the present.
WHEN I GET AN OPPORTUNITY I WILL SUMMON YOU.’” (Acts 24:25 ESV)

The present time was not a convenient time for Felix. The thing we must bear in mind is that when it comes to spiritual decisions it is opportunity, not convenience, which must be taken into account.

When Paul later had the opportunity to speak in the presence of King Agrippa, we read…
“(28) And Agrippa said to Paul, ‘IN A SHORT TIME WOULD YOU PERSUADE ME TO BE A CHRISTIAN?’ (29) And Paul said, ‘Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am -- except for these chains.’” (Acts 26:28-29 ESV)

Short time or long time PROCRASTINATION is a dangerous game to play with regard to our souls and yet many continue to play it. We must remember a reality regarding life; another opportunity is not always guaranteed.

James exhorted…
“YET YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT TOMORROW WILL BRING. What is your life?
For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” (James
4:14 ESV)

Somewhere recently I read a quote to the affect that tomorrow is the busiest day in people’s lives. What that indicates is much has been put off for tomorrow. PROCRASTINATION can be a deadly sin! Counting on tomorrow has become the great deception. When it comes to spiritual matters and the very destination of our souls, let us not put it off to a tomorrow that may never come.

Have a great day SEIZING THE OPPORTUNITIES IT PRESENTS!

Smarter Than Me!

Many don’t like to be told what they ought to do. When advise is offered they are sometimes offended feeling others must think they don’t know how to do anything themselves. However, how many times have reminders of things we already know been helpful? We place ourselves in a dangerous position when we refuse to acknowledge the need for counsel (note Proverbs 11:14; 15:22), especially when it comes to the COUNSEL OF GOD. Someone has stated, “Some men will be surprised someday to find that God knows more than they do and that He says what He means and means what He says.” [source: list of “sentence sermons”]

Paul, knowing that false teachers would arise from among those in Ephesus, exhorted the elders there to keep close watch of the flock over which they were overseers. (Acts 20:28-30) These individuals who would reject the truth would twist it to draw away others after them. What was necessary was to hold to what had already been revealed.

Reminding the Ephesian elders of His teaching while with them, Paul stated…
“(26) Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, (27) for I did not shrink from declaring to you THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD.” (Acts 20:26-27 ESV)

That is what we ought to seek; not merely the part of GOD’S COUNSEL that suits our ears, but ALL OF IT. He has said what He means and means what He has said. In His perfect wisdom God has revealed the counsel we need for living life now and for being prepared to spend an eternity with Him. Let us not shrink away from the COUNSEL OF GOD, but rather thank Him for EVERY BIT OF IT that He has revealed.

Have a great day ACCEPTING ALL THE GUIDANCE GOD PROVIDES!

The Verdict!

Yesterday morning my wife made an appearance in traffic court because of a citation she had received for a traffic violation. (Permission granted by my wife to divulge this information for illustrative purposes.) She admitted her guilt and the fact her mind was on other things as she traveled a familiar stretch where she normally monitored her speed closely. Though she admitted all this, by going before the judge her hope was that the fine would be reduced. I waited to hear from her to find out the final verdict.

Before God WE ARE GUILTY. None of us is without sin. (Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:10) Perhaps that guilt is directly associated with our mind being on things other than the Will of God. So many times we have either deliberately chosen to do our own thing or acted without thinking things through in accordance with God’s standards. Since we know our guilt and accountability before God, considering His judgment can be a fearful thing. The Hebrew writer even implied such. (Hebrews 10:31)

As Christians we have the following encouragement.
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE WITH THE FATHER, JESUS CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUS.” (1 John 2:1 ESV)

We don’t stand before the Father alone. In CHRIST we have one who SPEAKS ON OUR BEHALF to offer DEFENSE for us.

Paul also encouraged…
“(5) For there is one God, and there is ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MEN, the man CHRIST JESUS, (6) WHO GAVE HIMSELF AS A RANSOM FOR ALL, which is the testimony given at the proper time.” (1 Timothy 2:5-6 ESV)

JESUS CHRIST took care of the penalty due for our infractions against God’s Will. He is the One Who has made it possible for us to approach God in confidence. (Hebrews 4:16) According to Paul’s statement, JESUS is the only One Who is in a position to mediate for us. Praise God for such an encouraging hope in CHRIST.

Have a great day LIVING APPRECIATIVELY OF A COMMUTED SENTENCE!

Plan Stands!

It has been noted that you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time. (Perhaps politicians know this more than anyone.) When some don’t get their way they will often fuss and protest and whine until their desires are given into. Some special interest groups even verbalize that they will continue to come back until they get their way. Wearied of the continued return, quite often those of whom the demands are made cave in and finally grant them. It is a mistake, however, to think this is the way with God. We must guard against supposing God (the “I AM”) to be like man. (Psalm 50:21) To that end someone has pointed out, “Some people are conceited enough to think God changes His plans and purposes to suit their opinions and practices.” [source: list of “sentence sermons”]

The Hebrew writer, having referred to the promise made to Abraham and the fact such was still a certainty today, encouraged…
“(17) So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the UNCHANGEABLE CHARACTER OF HIS PURPOSE, he guaranteed it with an oath, (18) so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might HAVE STRONG ENCOURAGEMENT TO HOLD FAST TO THE HOPE SET BEFORE US.” (Hebrews 6:17-18 ESV)

It is through the acceptance of what God has declared regarding His Will for mankind and the provision of eternal life through Jesus Christ that all argument can be ended. What He has declared should be taken as fully confirmed. Any fussing, protesting, and whining will NOT CHANGE what He has purposed to be.

Let us be encouraged by the two facts that God’s character and His Word (oath) are UNCHANGING. He cannot lie! As we acknowledge His Will as being sovereign and His Wisdom as being perfect we should see that any change in need of taking place would be to our own opinions and practices. May it be so to the glory of God and the ultimate blessing of our lives.

Have a great day STANDING ON GOD’S PROMISES AND IN HIS PURPOSES!

Game of Life!

Some refer to life as a game. If so, how serious do we take it? In sports it may be true “It matters not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that counts”, but when we are talking about life we don’t want to lose!

A lot of pressure is put on the coaches of professional sports teams. If they do not lead their teams to victory they are quickly fired. With professional sports there is a lot of money involved. However, with life there is much more involved than money; our very soul is at stake! As Christians, we should be encouraged that we have a WINNING COACH who knows the game (note Hebrews 4:14-15) and offers all that is necessary to get us around the bases and safely home.

Paul encouraged…
“(56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
(57) But thanks be to God, who gives us THE VICTORY THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” (1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESV)

John also encouraged…
“(4) For EVERYONE who has been BORN OF GOD OVERCOMES THE WORLD. And this is the VICTORY THAT HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD -- OUR FAITH. (5) Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5 ESV)

It is a universal league in which we are in the midst of competition. However, we have a COACH Who is in a league of His own! Regardless of the competition we can trust the COACHING we receive from our Lord. He will lead us to final victory! Let us keep our faith in Him.

Have a great day REMAINING A PLAYER ON CHRIST’S TEAM!

Final Jeopardy!

“The category is ‘History’ and here’s the final clue. He said, ‘I regret I only have one life to give for my country.’ … [music playing] … What is the question? “Who is Nathan Hale?” “That’s right, Nathan Hale, the revolutionary patriot and martyred spy (1755-1776).”

It has been said that the definition of a “true patriot” is one who does regret he only has one LIFE to give for his country. When the LIFE is in “jeopardy” it seems like a final thing. The giving of a LIFE is viewed as the ultimate sacrifice. Since we have only one LIFE to give, if we give it, it’s all gone.

Could a similar definition be given for a “true Christian”? Having only one LIFE to give (Hebrews 9:27) we need to be concerned with how we give it and live it. Paul exhorted the Christians in Rome to give their “bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1 ESV) Such is to be an ongoing characteristic of our manner of living. It is the picture of a LIFE wholly surrendered to the Will of God.

Jesus exhorted…
“(23) And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (24) For whoever would save his life will lose it, BUT WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE WILL SAVE IT.” (Luke 9:23-24 ESV)

It is when we try to hold on to our LIFE ourselves that it is truly in “jeopardy”! We must be willing to surrender it to the Will of our Lord. We only have ONE LIFE to give for His sake, but by doing so we will save it. It is through Jesus the means has been provided for ETERNAL LIFE. He has made it possible for us to cross over from death to life. (John 5:24) Jesus gave His LIFE to save ours and He rose again to reveal His power over death and thus our removal from “jeopardy”. May we continue to daily give up our LIFE for the cause of Christ.

Have a great day AS A LIVING LOYALIST TO THE LORD!

Being Fed!

There were the days when everything eaten had to be prepared from scratch. Today we enjoy the convenience of not only going to the store for food to be prepared, but often can find dinners conveniently pre-packaged to heat and serve. Many grocery stores even have a deli where meals can be bought and either eaten on the spot or taken home for the family.

Someone has said, “More and more food is coming canned or pre-packaged -- including food for thought.” [source: 1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

When it comes to being given FOOD FOR THOUGHT we need to consider the source. Just like food that has been prepared for us, we need to be concerned with how it has been handled; considering what may have been added to it or if it has become contaminated some way. Many ideas today have been packaged in such a way that they may meet the taste of many even though they may not be purely the truth.

Fortunately God has prepared and preserved His Word so that we can check out what others may try to feed us. Remember the Bereans who checked out the Scriptures daily to make sure what they were being taught was true. (Acts 17:11) It is the “pure spiritual milk” (1 Peter 2:2) which we need for spiritual vitality.

Our highest health begins with our acceptance of Jesus and His teaching with regard to how we are to conduct our lives. Jesus, when followed by some of the very people He had fed with the loaves and fish, attempted to lift their gaze beyond a physical meal to the spiritual.

We read…
“(32) Jesus then said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you THE TRUE BREAD FROM HEAVEN. (33) For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ (34) They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ (35) Jesus said to them, ‘I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE, WHOEVER COMES TO ME SHALL NOT HUNGER, AND WHOEVER BELIEVES IN ME SHALL NEVER THIRST.” (John 6:32-35 ESV)

From the table Jesus has prepared we can know the FOOD FOR THOUGHT will be good and will bring health to our spiritual lives. May we retain a taste for what He has to offer while continuing to go back to original source of pure truth.

Have a great day BEING THOROUGHLY SATISFIED IN CHRIST!

Give Them A Reason!

Recently while taking one of my walks a woman who was also walking stated, “I’d follow you if I wanted to get someplace in a hurry.” Her comment reminded me of a passage in Zechariah that caught my attention a few years ago. God, through this prophet, pointed toward a time when many peoples and nations would seek the favor of the Lord.

We read…
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall TAKE HOLD OF THE ROBE OF A JEW, SAYING, ‘LET US GO WITH YOU, FOR WE HAVE HEARD THAT GOD IS WITH YOU.’” (Zechariah 8:23 ESV)

What an honor is described here. A single Jew who would have ten from other nations take hold of them to FOLLOW because they had come to realize God was with them. Paul was raised a devout Jew (Philippians 3:5) and as we read in Acts and glimpse his life through the letters he wrote, we can easily see how many took hold of him and FOLLOWED, becoming believers in the Will of God and in Christ. There was something powerful with regard to the manner in which Paul lived his life that drew others to him. He was even received by some as if he had been an angel of God or Christ Himself. (Galatians 4:14) Paul’s life provided a reason for others to FOLLOW. He lived in a manner which revealed God was with him.

The implications of how we live our daily lives cannot be underestimated. How we approach our daily tasks and conduct our lives says something to those around us. Classmates, fellow workers, neighbors, and even strangers on the street observe our lives and draw conclusions from what they see. Do they see God? Do they see Christ? Is there anything about our manner of living that would cause another to want to take hold of us with a desire to FOLLOW where we are going? The potential impact our life can have to the glory of God should always be on our minds. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to lead others to Him. May we live with such a high purpose in accordance with God’s Will that others will be given every reason to desire to take hold of our life and FOLLOW us to Him.

Have a great day WALKING IN GOD’S WAY!

Deafening Applause!

There you are center stage! The lights are on you! The roar of the crowd is deafening! The applause goes on and on and on! What a feeling! What encouragement to keep on keeping on! But who is this audience? Who is it that is applauding your performance? Yes, you have pleased them, but who are they that are so pleased with you?

This life is a performance of one scene after another and this world is the stage. How are we doing? Who are we seeking to please? Whose applause are we allowing to encourage us onward in life?

People in this world can be so fickle. They can applaud us one minute and curse us the next. Their standard of acceptance is not always the same. What they want or expect is not the same one day and then the next. The world gets bored with the same old same old. They want something new! They want something different. They often want the limits pushed and so applaud those who are brave enough to do it. But the difficulty with the world's standards is that they are constantly changing and one can never be sure if what he is doing will get the applause or not.

God has a constant standard and it is His applause we need to be seeking. Note what John wrote about some of the Jewish rulers during the days Jesus walked on earth:
“(42) Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (43) FOR THEY LOVED THE GLORY THAT COMES FROM MAN MORE THAN THE GLORY THAT COMES FROM GOD.” (John 12:42-43 ESV)

And Paul wrote:
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10 ESV)

Let us do what is good because it is good. Let us do what is right because it is right. Let us do what is honorable because it is honorable. The sight of the vanity in seeking worldly fame should stir our hearts to seek the satisfaction that comes only from seeking the praise and favor of God. It is to God we are responsible! It is His praise, His applause, His accolades we need to seek to receive!

Our life is center stage. Our Heavenly Father is watching. Is He booing or applauding our performance? Let us continue to live and perform our life in His Light so that some day we may be greeted by Heaven's deafening applause as we are welcomed into eternal glory!

Have a great performance ACCORDING TO GOD’S SCRIPTING!

Crave The Pure!

The weather is getting nicer -- isn't it? We're getting back to the weather where it is easy to work up a thirst. But what would you think of me if you gave me a glass of cold milk or good clean fresh cold water, and before I drank it, I picked up a little dirt and put it in it? I mean, not a lot of dirt, but just a little bit. Would you think I was crazy to put dirt in the clean refreshing water you gave me to drink to quench my thirst? We want that which is pure to be taken in to quench our bodies' thirst, don't we? Why take the dirty or the muddy when you can have the clear, clean, refreshing!

Peter exhorted…
“(1) So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. (2) Like newborn infants, LONG FOR THE PURE SPIRITUAL MILK, that by it you may grow up to salvation -- (3) IF INDEED YOU HAVE TASTED THAT THE LORD IS GOOD.” (1 Peter 2:1-3 ESV)

Have you tasted how good God is to us? Have you found great encouragement in His promises and blessings of life? God has promised us such good things; so many promises to encourage and prompt us to lovingly obey His desires. We need to be concerned about what we take into our lives both physically and spiritually.

Paul wrote…
“Since we have these promises, beloved, LET US CLEANSE OURSELVES FROM EVERY DEFILEMENT OF BODY AND SPIRIT, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1 ESV)

Yes, by doing that we do show God we appreciate all He has provided and show Him the reverence [respect and worship] He deserves and of which He is worthy.

Have a great day BEING QUENCHED BY GOD!

Sowing with a Harvest in Mind!

This time of year many people are tilling and planting their gardens. Seeds have been selected and a harvest is anticipated. Such should also be associated with regard to our outlook on life. As we go along our way there is sowing being done of which a harvest will someday be gained. We do need to be mindful, however, of sowing the right stuff. (note Galatians 6:7-8)

Paul encouraged the church at Corinth…
“He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the HARVEST OF YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” (2 Corinthians 9:10 ESV)

Paul had been encouraging the Corinthian brethren to have a proper attitude in giving to meet the needs of Christians in Judea. He had also pointed out God’s abounding grace in sufficiently providing what was necessary for them to ABOUND IN GOOD WORKS. (2 Corinthians 9:8) While prompting these Christians to be generous, Paul reminded them of God’s provision and continued provision as a basis for their generosity. As one gives (whether it be money, time, energy, etc.), thankfulness for what God has provided and faith in His future provision are to be the basis of the willingness. Taking our blessings for granted and possessing a lack of faith may cause us to withhold from others feeling it must be horded away for self.

Remember Jesus’ encouragement with regard to doing the right things.
“(37) Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; (38) give, and it will be given to you. GOOD MEASURE, PRESSED DOWN, SHAKEN TOGETHER. RUNNING OVER, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:37-38 ESV)

When seed is sown, the harvest amounts to more than what was sown. The same is true spiritually. Like investing in a bank is done with a view toward greater dividends in return, so our investing in service to the glory of God ultimately brings greater blessing from Him. May God’s manifold provision prompt generosity on our part with a view toward a RIGHTEOUS harvest He will provide.

Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE BLESSINGS OF GENEROSITY!

Guard Against Such!

The story has been told of a woman who went to a preacher, feeling she needed to confess the sin of PRIDE. The preacher listened as she told him, “I must confess that I just can’t resist the temptation of sitting in front of my mirror for two to three hours every day admiring my beauty.” The preacher, giving her a second look, counseled her, “Well, it’s not the sin of pride you need to confess; it’s the sin of IMAGINATION!”

Perhaps we can look around us and see how PRIDE and IMAGINATION often go hand in hand. In ARROGANCE many reject God’s wisdom to follow all kinds of IMAGINATIONS. They are so stuck on themselves and their own desires their thinking becomes extremely distorted. Why must we be so careful in this area? Solomon stated there is more hope for a fool than for one who is wise in his own eyes (Proverbs 26:12) and Paul made reference to those who, claiming to be wise, became fools. (Romans 1:22)

Regarding the wicked, the psalmist stated…
“(2) IN ARROGANCE the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in THE SCHEMES THAT THEY HAVE DEVISED. (3) For THE WICKED BOASTS of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord. (4) IN the PRIDE of his face the wicked does not seek him; ALL HIS THOUGHTS ARE, ‘THERE IS NO GOD.’” (Psalm 10:2-4 ESV)

When PRIDE takes over and one is left to their own IMAGINATIONS, perhaps it is the most dangerous position to be in. The psalmist went on to point out that such a one is so deluded in his PRIDE that he THINKS, “I shall not be moved” (Psalm 10:6), “God has forgotten” and “will never see” the way others have been treated (Psalm 10:11), and that God “will not call to account.” In each of these verses the psalmist stated this is what the wicked “says in his heart.” In the midst of PRIDE and one’s own IMAGINATIONS, all perspective is lost.

What is going on in our heart? If we are even bordering on either PRIDE or reliance on our own THINKING we need to confess it to God and turn our hearts back to a surrendered obedience to His Will. These two sins which often go together need to be driven out together. May we seek God’s help in maintaining a proper perspective of self and the manner in which we ought to live.

Have a great day LIVING FOR THE ONE TO WHOM WE WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT!

Don't Forget This Grease!

WD-40 ®, lightweight oil, grease, graphite; all wonderful lubricants designed to make things WORK smoother and easier. Well oiled machinery runs better, greased joints rotate more smoothly, and lubricant sprayed hinges and sliding doors and windows WORK with less effort. However, with all the benefits of these lubricants there is still one grease which cannot be forgotten. When it comes to many of this life’s tasks there is still no substitute for good old fashioned roll up your sleeves “elbow grease”. Even with regard to our labors to the glory of God, we are not only to put our back into the WORK, but our all as well!

In light of the things we can do in this life, Solomon stated….
“Whatever your hand finds to do, DO IT WITH YOUR MIGHT, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol [the grave], to which you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10 ESV)

If it needs to be done and is worth doing, why should we not put our all into it? A little bit of “elbow grease” can go a long way when it is applied to our WORK for the Lord. With our willingness accompanied by His wisdom and strength there is much that can be accomplished. Whatever our hand finds to do, may we apply some “elbow grease” and do it with our might to the glory of God.

Have a great day READY FOR EVERY GOOD WORK!

Limitations!

We can see them just about anywhere we go; signs that indicate some kind of limitation. Some of them may be more significant than others, but through the acceptance or rejection of some our very safety may be at stake. “House Guests Only!” “Entrance Only!” “Exit Only!” “One Way Only!” “Right Turn Only!”

Funk & Wagnalls’ Dictionary defines “ONLY” as an expression of limitation in the following words: “Solely; merely; exclusively; limiting a statement to a single defined person, thing, or number.”

We’re used to those designations of limitations in this life. Why, then, do some struggle so much with accepting such being associated with approaching God and living a spiritual life? When reading the Bible, some appear to dislike the “ONLY” passages or those which seem to bring limitations to life. We can’t have all things just any way we want them!
Just like many of the “ONLY” signs we see around us today, whatever limitations the Scriptures address are for properly directing our lives in a safe manner. Even without the use of the word “ONLY” there are passages which still convey such an implication to be accepted. When the Scriptures state one thing in a manner that excludes or rules out all else, such limitations from God ought to be respected because they are based upon His Wisdom and Will to provide blessing to our lives.

Note an important limitation Jesus addressed while talking to Thomas.
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME.” (John14:6 ESV)

“No one”, said Jesus. What is to not understand there? “Except through Me”, Jesus also declared. Again, what part of that limitation is not clear? Jesus is the ONLY ACCESS to the Father. No man has been declared by God to be such. For this reference to be made to Jesus rules out any others. He must be acknowledged for Who He is and a life with Him must be entered into in order to have access to the Father.

Let us persist in acknowledging Jesus as the “One Way” as we continually make a “Right Turn” toward Him and His Will. May we strive to help others understand the importance of this truth as well. There is an eternity that depends upon it.

Have a great day COMING TO THE FATHER THROUGH THE SON!

Children of God!

A son. A daughter. A child. A dependant. Parents have great concern for their well-being. Provision is made for the nurturing of mind and body. However, is it always well ACCEPTED? Is what is being provided always recognized and appreciated? It is sad when loving provision is offered only to be rejected.

Consider the following I came across in a recent church bulletin.

===========
THE SON

A Jewish businessman in Chicago sent his son to Israel for a year to absorb the culture. When the son returned, he said, “Papa, I had a great time in Israel. By the way, I converted to Christianity.” “Oy vey,” said the father. “What have I done?” He took his problem to his best friend. “Ike,” he said, “I sent my son to Israel, and he came home a Christian. What can I do?” “Funny you should ask,” said Ike. “I too, sent my son to Israel, and he also came home a Christian. Perhaps we should go see the rabbi.” So they did and they explained their problem to the rabbi. “Funny you should ask,” said the rabbi. “I, too, sent my son to Israel, and he also came home a Christian. What is happening to our young people?” And so they all prayed, telling the Lord about their sons. As they finished their prayer, a voice came from the heavens….. “Funny you should ask,” said the voice. “I, too, sent my son to Israel….”

==========

John, referring to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, stated…
“(11) He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. (12) BUT TO ALL WHO DID RECEIVE HIM, WHO BELIEVED IN HIS NAME, HE GAVE THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD, (13) who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:11-13 ESV)

Verse eleven seems like such a sad verse. God sent His Son to the very ones who lived in eager anticipation of the coming Messiah. Jesus drew attention and rightly so. He was noticed. His teaching and power could not be ignored. However, He was not accepted by all. Jesus was rejected in His home town. (Mark 6:4-6) Even His own brothers had difficulty believing at first. (John 7:5) And most of the leadership of the nation opposed Him.
Nevertheless, there were many who did ACCEPT AND BELIEVE, and to those was given “the right to become children of God.”

Praise God for His provision and the opportunity we have had to become children of God. Our Heavenly Father loved enough to send the very best with the hope He would be ACCEPTED AND BELIEVED. May our life unceasingly reveal much we do!

Have a great day LIVING AS ONE BORN AGAIN OF GOD!

Leaving A Mark!

Various individuals have left their mark in life throughout the history of mankind. Perhaps we would note that some have done this by noble means while others in dishonorable or shameful ways. We might even wonder regarding the mark we could someday leave behind when our life here on earth is through. Someone has urged, “As you go through life, leave your mark, not a stain.” [source: calendar quote]

It may not surprise us when we notice the stains some have left behind in this world. However, it is sad when such is noticed within the church. Peter made reference to some who counted “it pleasure to revel in the daytime” and referred to them as “blots and blemishes” even though they feasted among the church. (2 Peter 2:13) Jude also made a similar observation. (Jude 24) Such should not be the mark of us as Christians. Since Jesus has provided the means for His church to be “without spot or wrinkle”, but rather “holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27) we should seriously consider the mark our life leaves in its wake.

What ought to be the mark among us and the mark to aim to leave behind?
Jesus exhorted His disciples…
“(34) A new commandment I give to you, that you LOVE ONE ANOTHER: just AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, you also are to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. (35) BY THIS ALL PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES, if you have LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER.” (John 13:35 ESV)

Genuine LOVE is to be a mark of being disciples of Jesus. LOVE for the Lord, for the truth, for one another, and even for our enemies (Matthew 5:44) will ultimately leave a powerful mark where we have walked and lived out our life.

The LOVE of Christ was powerfully displayed through a blood stained cross. However, it is His LOVE that has left its abiding mark on those who believe. Having been called to “walk in love” (Ephesians 5:2) let us live in such a way that His LOVE -- working in and through us -- will leave its mark on those around us.

Have a great day LOVINGLY LIVING TO BE SEEN AS ONE OF HIS!
