Living!
Some people measure their life by the things they don’t do. They may be able to list off a number of “sins” or worldly ways they have successfully refrained from becoming involved in. If we make such a list saying we don’t do this, don’t do that, and don’t do this other thing, etc. -- that may be good, but what does it add up to? Nothing! As we journey here on earth we need to recognize how it is a matter of LIFE GOD WANTS US TO LIVE, not merely a matter of a life to avoid. Most often when we read something in Scripture we are to avoid, within a few verses there is instruction of how we ARE TO LIVE. Godliness is not a passive, but rather an ACTIVE LIFE.
Paul exhorted the church at Corinth with regard to living in Christ…
“(14) For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded
this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; (15) and he died for all, THAT THOSE WHO LIVE MIGHT no longer LIVE for themselves but FOR HIM who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15 ESV)
We did not deserve the gift of Christ on our behalf, but by LIVING FOR HIM we reveal our appreciation for the eternal hope He has provided. We are to live in a manner worthy of the Good News we have received in Christ. (Philippians 1:27) Our belief in Christ and our relationship to Him is to be demonstrated by a LIFE OF DOING to His glory and praise. May our actions continually reveal the genuineness of a LIFE LIVED IN AND FOR HIM!
Have a great day DEAD TO SIN BUT ALIVE WITH RIGHTEOUS ACTIONS!

Believe It!
We have heard the warning not to believe everything we read. News stories, statistics, and information of various kinds found in newspapers, magazines, and other written media can be biased, inaccurate, or outright false. With all the information that can be found on the internet this warning may be especially needful. However, perhaps the thing that creates an even greater challenge is reflected in what I read yesterday on a bumper sticker which simply stated, “Don’t Believe Everything You Think!” The reason it is good to consider that statement is because of what God revealed through His prophet Isaiah.
We read…
“(8) For MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. (9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways HIGHER than your ways and MY THOUGHTS THAN YOUR THOUGHTS.”
(Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV)
Are our perceptions always accurate? Do we look at situations and ever come to the wrong conclusions? It is far too possible for us to give thought to something and be wrong. We are imperfect beings still in need of learning and seeking wisdom beyond ourselves. On the other hand, WHAT GOD HAS DECLARED we can believe. As He made clear through Isaiah, He is in a league of His own.
In order for us to maintain a proper perspective as we go through life we need to continually ACCEPT WHAT GOD SAYS and meditate upon it. Allowing HIS THOUGHTS to become our thoughts is the way for us to be right.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A MIND FOCUSED ON GOD’S WILL!

[SPECIAL NOTE: The authorship of yesterday’s poem was sent to me so I can now give honor to whom honor is due. “The Man In The Glass” has had some wording changes done to it over the years and some have even attached their own name to it. However, it was originally called “The Guy In The Glass” and was written by Peter “Dale” Wimbrow, Sr., in 1934.]

Finding Ourselves!
A few weeks ago I was SEARCHING the web and I found myself. It really caught my attention. What I was doing was a search to see how easily the “teEn-MAIL” could be found since it is now being posted on the Berryville Church of Christ website in Arkansas. To my surprise the daily “teEn-MAIL” was the first link which came up and there was my name right in front of me. I was glad to see (thanks to the efforts of Kevin Cauley) that this material could be so easily found. A few years ago when I set up a group Yahoo site for “teEn-MAIL”, unfortunately such a search brought up some links that were far from God glorifying.
There is a lot that can be found when SEARCHING the web. Perhaps there is a sense in which some have gone online in SEARCH of self; seeking that with which they feel they can identify. However, as I thought about the notion of SEARCHING the web and finding myself I began to think of time spent SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES.
As we SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES, if we don’t find ourselves, what should that tells us? If we don’t identify with what God has revealed in His Word we must not be taking it to heart and allowing it to transform us into the beings God intended us to be. If we look into God’s mirror and cannot recognize ourselves, it is not the mirror that needs changing, but ourselves.
James exhorted…
“(22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. (24) For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (25) But THE ONE WHO LOOKS INTO THE PERFECT LAW, the law of liberty, AND PERSEVERES, being no hearer who forgets but A DOER WHO ACTS, HE WILL BE BLESSED IN HIS DOING.” (James 1:22-25 ESV)
There is a sense in which we should view God’s Word as a mirror for the soul. As we turn the pages and SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES what is the reflection we see? Does our life reflect a likeness to what is written there?
I was first introduced to the following poem by one of my Bible class teachers when I was in grade school and have never forgotten the focus.
THE GUY IN THE GLASS!
When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass.
by Dale Wimbrow, (c) 1934
Besides God, we know more than anyone else what is reflected back as we compare our lives with how God has called us to live. We know how we measure compared to His standard. May we continue to allow God’s Will to transform us into the beings He desires us to be so that when we do SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES we will find the essence of ourselves and the promises associated with living as children of God.
Have a great day SEEKING TO BE FOUND AS GOD WOULD HAVE US!

Value Remains!
We live in a mixed up world. I heard someone recently state how TRUTH goes begging while lies go riding first class. Don’t we see that going on around us? We live in a day of liars. TRUTH is not valued as it ought. However, TRUTH still retains its value whether it is recognized or not and someday all will realize this TRUTH about TRUTH!
Someone has said, “Quality has everything in its favor including the price.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] TRUTH has quality which should never be underestimated.
Solomon urged…
“BUY TRUTH, and do not sell it; BUY WISDOM, INSTRUCTION, and UNDERSTANDING.” (Proverbs 23:23 ESV)
TRUTH is worth whatever it takes to find it and retain it. It is not to be sold and yet some seem to sell out very cheaply. TRUTH is to be loved. TRUTH need not be feared when it is acknowledged and allowed to properly direct our lives.
Why is TRUTH to be valued in such a way? What is the greatest quality TRUTH has to offer? Jesus pointed out that TRUTH has the power to set us free! (John 8:32) Jesus spoke that TRUTH to some who did not realize how enslaved they were and many remain in the same situation today because they refuse to recognize the value of TRUTH. Knowing the TRUTH about sin provides the opportunity to change our course in life and press on without regret. (2 Corinthians 7:10) Therefore we should rejoice in view of the TRUTH; the fact we are able to see it.
Jesus is the TRUTH! (John 14:6) He came to reveal the TRUTH that can set us free. Because of the TRUTH we have been given the opportunity to go “first class” into the glory of our Lord. May we allow the TRUTH to continue to work in our favor.
Have a great day ENJOYING THE QUALITY OF LIFE GOD’S WILL BRINGS!

Similar To Nature!
During the winter I am generally into my office before the sun comes up. As we move further into Spring, with the sunrise coming earlier, one of the things I enjoy is waking up to the sound of the birds. At the Spiritual Growth Workshop I recently attended, one of the speakers from Lubbock, Texas commented that there they wake up to the birds coughing. I assume he was comparing the dry dusty climate of Lubbock to the fresh moist greenness of Washington State.
This morning I woke up to the sound of foghorns, a sound I also enjoy as it reminds me of how close we live to the water. After doing my morning reading I took off on the long walk I generally take on Tuesdays (my day off) and soon the sound of the foghorns was joined by the cry of seagulls. To me, those are two sounds which go well together. Then as my walk took me closer to the water the sound of the foghorns and seagulls was joined by the gentle lap of the waves against the shore. It was a beautiful symphony of nature with not a sound out of place.
As I listened to how well those sounds went together, my mind began to ponder some thoughts from James. As he discussed the tongue, he stated…
“(9) WITH IT WE BLESS our Lord and Father, AND WITH IT WE CURSE people who are made in the likeness of God. (10) FROM THE SAME MOUTH come BLESSING AND CURSING. My brothers, THESE THINGS OUGHT NOT TO BE SO.” (James 3:9-10 ESV)
James went on to provide three illustrations of how contrary to nature such use of the tongue should be recognized. (read James 3:11-12) For blessing and cursing to come from the same mouth should not be viewed as NATURAL. It should be considered against our NATURE as children of God. The two do not go together. There can be no harmony between the two.
As we recognize what sounds NATURALLY blend together may we be very mindful of the sounds which come forth from our lips? Are they what they ought to be? Do our words express that which is according to the NATURE of God Whom we claim to believe in and serve? If it is contrary to His NATURE then we should see how it is also out of place in our life and refrain from it. May we, like the psalmist David, continually seek for the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart to be acceptable in the sight of God. (Psalm 19:14) In this way the sounds of our life will NATURALLY possess the potential to bring blessing to those who hear.

Praise Be To God!
Blunders! Errors! Foul ups! Goof ups! Mistakes! Mess ups! Slip-ups! Whatever you want to call them we all make them and don’t like attention drawn to them. They seem to be an inescapable part of our lives. Perhaps we feel people tend to remember our blunders more than when we get things right and that if we have just enough SUCCESSES maybe we can feel a sense of redemption for the mistakes we have made. Someone has said, “Success covers a multitude of blunders.” [source: calendar quote] There are times when a great SUCCESS can overshadow the blunders made along the way. Is the only thing we can hope for is to have more SUCCESSES than blunders?
We are limited in what we can do when it comes to redeeming ourselves from life’s blunders. Our personal SUCCESSES are not enough to redeem us from our sins. It is not a matter of hoping we have more good things to outweigh the bad. Though we must aim to live godly lives, we can never be “good enough” to redeem ourselves. We must trust in and rely upon the grace of God for that as we live our lives in Christ.
James pointed out that “love covers a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20) Certainly love is what was behind God’s adequate provision for redeeming us.
Paul noted with regard to this fact…
“(8) but GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR US IN THAT WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US. (9) Since, therefore, we have now BEEN JUSTIFIED BY HIS BLOOD, much more shall we be SAVED BY HIM from the wrath of God.” (Romans 5:8-9 ESV)
The sacrifice of Christ is the only adequate means of dealing with life’s blunders. It is through the SUCCESS of Christ enduring the cross and shedding His powerful blood that our sins can be covered.
Paul noted this SUCCESS in his letter to the church at Corinth.
“(56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to GOD, WHO GIVES US THE VICTORY THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.” (1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESV)
Therein lies our SUCCESS story. Our Lord’s SUCCESS in fulfilling the plan of the Father has provided the adequate means for complete forgiveness. (1 John 1:7) May we praise God for such a provision as we strive to live daily in accordance with His Will.
Have a great day KNOWING HE’S GOT US COVERED!

I Love You To Life!
Since, through God's love, the means has been provided for us to have life and have it eternally, how can that love work through us in a way to also "love others to LIFE"? How can our life impact others to bring them to Christ, the source of life?
1. Love in a way that keeps walls down! (Matthew 5:44)
2. Love in a way that builds up! (1 Corinthians 8:1)
3. Love kept as the basis of teaching! (Ephesians 4:15)
4. Love in a way that comforts! (Philippians 2:1)
5. Love in a way that prompts action! (1 Thessalonians 1:3)
6. Love in a way that produces joy in others! (Philemon 7)
7. Love in a way that reaches out to draw in! (1 Peter 4:8)
8. Love in a way that reveals we know we're loved and assured of our salvation! (1 John 4:16-18)
The list could go on and we would do well to meditate on the characteristics of love as listed in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 as well.
Paul wrote in Romans 13:8, “Let no debt remain outstanding except the CONTINUING DEBT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.” (NIV)
Let's love our families TO LIFE! Let's love our friends TO LIFE! Let's love our neighbors TO LIFE! Let's love our co-workers TO LIFE! Let us always reach out with a love that will love people TO LIFE!
Have a great day LOVING OTHERS AS GOD HAS LOVED YOU!

Love You Too ...
I think we've all heard the familiar expression: "to love someone to death." Though I'm not positive, I think the idea behind the statement may relate to holding and hugging so tightly you could almost strangle the individual. But what I think we ought to consider is a bit of a twist to the statement. We ought to "love others TO LIFE!" This is a much more Biblical concept since it is exactly what has been done on our behalf.
This is what God's love did as demonstrated in the giving of His Son while we were still sinners (Romans 5:9) giving us the opportunity to be united with Christ and therefore being "dead to sin but ALIVE to God in Christ Jesus" (Romans 6:11). God is the one who "because of his great love for us ... made us ALIVE with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions...." (Ephesians 2:4-5). God "showed his love among us" by sending His "one and only Son into the world that we might LIVE through him." (I John 4:9)
This is what Jesus' love did in His willingness to suffer death that "he might taste death for everyone" (Hebrews 2:9). And Jesus' desire for His disciples is that they love as He loved (John 13:34-35; Ephesians 5:2).
So how can we love others to life? How can our love impact others to bring them to Christ, the source of LIFE (John 1:4)? Tomorrow's message will focus on those ways.
Have a great day KNOWING THE ONE WHO LOVES TO LIFE!

Youthful Influence!
As young people, you are in a position to greatly influence your peers and even those older than you. You have youthful energy, and, to a great extent, a degree of simple honesty in your outlook on life since you have not had years to develop too many biases. What that means is, you may see some things a little clearer than some of us older folk. (But don’t throw out all our wisdom and guidance yet.) The mistakes of the generations before you don’t have to define your destiny today. Nor do your own mistakes of the past need to define your destiny for the future. However, what you feed your mind and focus on is important to influence toward the right things.
In 2 Chronicles 34 we read of Josiah who became king of Judah at the age of eight. He was preceded by two wicked kings (Manasseh and Amon). Though Josiah was young, he did not allow himself to fall into the same type of leadership or lifestyle that came before him. We read that in the eighth year of his reign (age 16) he began to focus and seek out God (verse 3). In the twelfth year (age 20) he began to clear out of Judah and Jerusalem all the objects of idolatry (verses 3-7). In his eighteenth year (age 24) he set in order the project to repair the temple in order to get the nation back into proper worship with God (verses 8 and following).
But why, among God’s people, was there so much from which Josiah had to turn the nation around? Because as the temple was being cleaned up and the money was being brought out, “Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord that had been given through Moses.” (verse 14). God’s words, His commands for the nation, had been lost. They had not been referred to. The earlier kings had done their own thing. Josiah, beginning in his youth, desired to do God’s thing. And Josiah drew the attention of the people back to God’s commands.
The social, political, and religious climate of Judah prior to Josiah’s reign was due to God’s word being lost. And if we neglect to read and take God’s word to heart today, it might as well be lost for all the good (or lack of good) it will do us. Set your focus on God’s way. Use the youthful energy and insight God has given you to influence in what is right. God can use you to bring blessing into the lives of people you come into contact with both young and old. God is ready to work great things through your life if you will open your heart and allow Him to do so.
Have a great day INFLUENCING TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

Keeping In Touch!
Our society today is a very mobile one. People are always on the go, commutes between work and home for many are long, some make frequent business trips across country and around the world, there are families who pack up and move from one place to another every few years, etc. For some, the way they keep things good in their relationships is by calling or e-mailing HOME frequently. With computers, wireless modems, video conferencing, cell phones, picture phones, etc., keeping in touch with co-workers and with loved ones at HOME has never been easier. Those who rely upon such methods of communication on a daily (even hourly) basis may wonder how they ever got along without them.
The statement has been made that “As a child of God, PRAYER is kind of like CALLING HOME EVERY DAY.” Are we as diligent (or even more so) regarding keeping in touch with God as we are with close family and friends? I have seen some whom I’ve wondered if the cell phone next to their ear was attached. I see people in the grocery store line, driving, walking, jogging, eating, etc., with a cell phone to their ear. Sometimes this is to the neglect of what they should be focusing on. However, how much focus in centered on the most important relationship of all?
Paul exhorted…
“PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV)
Long before anyone ever knew what electronics were, we have had the privilege of “wireless” communication HOME to our Heavenly Father. Let us maintain a spirit of PRAYER, recognizing that at anytime and anywhere our thoughts and PRAYERS can connect us with our eternal HOME.
Have a great day KNOWING HE CAN HEAR YOU NOW!

Right In The Middle!
It is not hard for us to look around ourselves and note the many PROBLEMS that exist today. There are PROBLEMS in government, PROBLEMS in our communities, PROBLEMS within our congregations, PROBLEMS in our families, etc. As long as there are people living within this realm there will be PROBLEMS because we are imperfect beings. We may readily admit to the presence of PROBLEMS. However, sometimes the greatest PROBLEM is the failure to note that which is closest to home. Perhaps our prayer should be as one offered, “Dear God: I have a problem. It’s me.” [source: list of aphorisms] The reality is that “I” is right there in the middle of “sIn” and that PROBLEM dare not be overlooked.
I’m reminded of Jesus’ contrast between the prayers of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Though both men were stated as going up to the temple to pray, oh how different was their focus and manner in approaching God.
Note the prayer of the Pharisee.
“(11) The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am NOT LIKE OTHER MEN, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. (12) I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’” (Luke 18:11-12 ESV)
The Pharisee readily saw the PROBLEMS around him and his prayer seemed to have turned into more of a bragging session before God than anything else. The very reason for Jesus telling this parable was because of the way the “self-righteous” looked down upon others (Luke 18:9) while failing to acknowledge their own struggles.
In contrast, note how the tax collector’s prayer was short and to the point.
“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘GOD, BE MERCIFUL TO ME, A SINNER!’” (Luke 18:13 ESV)
Jesus went on to note that it was this man who went home justified. (Luke 18:14) Not the one who tried to justify himself, but the one who humbly acknowledged where his greatest challenge rested -- the sin in his own life.
There may be many godly characteristics associated with our lives. I pray that is true and that we each are continuing to mature spiritually. However, we must always remain on guard against developing a sense of self-righteousness. We each still have things to work on in our own lives and we need to ask for God’s mercy and help as we humbly acknowledge the PROBLEMS that still need correcting.
John warned and encouraged…
“(8) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we confess our sins, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE us our sins AND TO CLEANSE us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9 ESV)

Seeing And Believing!
Some have made the claim that “seeing is believing” while others might say that “believing is seeing.” However, it is possible to see and believe only what one wants to believe as well as possible to believe and see only what one wants to see. So how do we get seeing and believing together in a way that is beneficial?
Reading in Acts chapter four this morning, I was once again struck by the contrast between those who witnessed undeniable EVIDENCE yet did not come to the same conclusions. In Acts three Peter and John had healed a lame man (forty years old according to Acts 4:22) who continued to hang around them. It was an impressive miracle, but so was the message Peter and John had the opportunity to preach regarding the power of Christ. Many who acknowledged the healing of the lame man also believed the message with a response of about five thousand. (Acts 4:4) This response was disconcerting to many of the Jewish leaders.
Consider the contrast in the following verses.
“(13) Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. (14) BUT SEEING THE MAN WHO WAS HEALED STANDING BESIDE THEM, THEY HAD NOTHING TO SAY IN OPPOSITION. (15) But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, (16) saying, ‘What shall we do with these men? For THAT A NOTABLE SIGN HAS BEEN PERFORMED THROUGH THEM IS EVIDENT to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, AND WE CANNOT DENY IT. (17) But in order THAT IT MAY SPREAD NO FURTHER among the people, LET US WARN THEM TO SPEAK NO MORE TO ANYONE IN THIS NAME.’ (18) So they called them and CHARGED THEM NOT TO SPEAK OR TEACH at all in the name of Jesus. (19) But PETER AND JOHN ANSWERED them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, (20) for WE CANNOT BUT SPEAK OF WHAT WE HAVE SEEN AND HEARD.’” (Acts 4:13-20 ESV)
The Jewish leaders saw the EVIDENCE and could not deny the miracle, but refused to believe it was done by the power and in the Name of Jesus and therefore wanted Peter and John to hush up. Peter and John, on the other hand, could not be shut up because in their viewing of the EVIDENCE they could not help but speak of what they had both seen and heard.
Are we duly convicted by the EVIDENCE of what we have seen and heard? The key to seeing and believing or the believing and seeing is the openness of the eyes and the heart to the EVIDENCE that is there. There is much we accept by faith, but it is not totally a blind faith. God has preserved EVIDENCE suitable for the supporting of our faith. There is substance on which our faith can rest.
The Hebrew writer stated…
“Now faith is the assurance [substance, nature, essence, or literally a standing under or support] of things hoped for, the conviction [proof or evidence] of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1 ESV)
May we be sufficiently convicted by the EVIDENCE regarding the truth of Christ and the hope that is ours in Him. If we are truly open to the truth the truth will be seen.
Have a great day KEEPING EYES, EARS, AND HEART OPEN TO THE EVIDENCE!

Content With That!
I recently came across a bulletin clipping I had set aside which read, “A rich person is one who knows he has enough.” Enough! How much is enough? I imagine that for how many people we asked we would have that many different answers. Living in a world where people have so much yet want so much more, lack of contentment will surely continue to be one of life’s challenges. How thankful are we for what we have? How often are we guilty of taking too much of our RICH BLESSINGS for granted?
Note the focus Paul encouraged.
“(6) Now there is GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. (8) But if we HAVE FOOD AND CLOTHING, with these we will BE CONTENT.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV)
Do we honestly recognize the TRUE BLESSINGS of food and clothing? Can we be content with that as Paul advocated. When our desires are focused on too much other stuff we can easily begin to be drawn away from the rich gain there is in godliness; the pursuit and exercise of the Will of God. Paul went on to point to the real challenge and distraction worldly wealth and possessions can present. (1 Timothy 6:9-10) Our only safeguard is to keep it all in perspective, making sure one possession we have is a real sense of appreciation and thankfulness for even the simple everyday provisions for life -- “food and clothing.”
There is a prayer of an unknown Confederate soldier which has circulated for years which illustrates very well how to focus on TRUE BLESSING. It is a picture of prayers answered the other way, yet with an acknowledgement of the TRUE BLESSING ultimately received.
“I asked God for strength that I might achieve,
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health that I might do greater things,
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked for riches that I might be happy,
I was given poverty that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life,
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men most richly blessed.”
As we pray we may not always know what is best to ask of God. (note Romans 8:26-27) Are we willing to sincerely pray for His Will to be done in our life? Will we be content with receiving what God considers best and accept as sufficient the TRUE BLESSINGS He brings? Of all the things we possess may we retain an appreciation for even the simplest blessings, taking nothing for granted. By so doing we will be able to also say, “AMONG ALL PEOPLE I AM MOST RICHLY BLESSED.”
Have a great day APPRECIATING HOW RICH WE TRULY ARE!

Seize The Opportunity!
Have you ever had the experience of wanting to talk to someone, but decided to finish what you were doing first, only to eventually turn and realize they were gone? The intent was good, but while you focused on your own stuff they SLIPPED AWAY along with the opportunity. The opportunity may present itself again, however there are situations when the last opportunity may have SLIPPED BY. It is important to recognize that some opportunities must be given higher priority than whatever else we might be doing.
Through Isaiah we have the following exhortation.
“Seek the LORD WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND; call upon him WHILE HE IS NEAR.” (Isaiah 55:6 ESV)
Here was a focus toward present opportunity to seek and call upon God. The calling seems to imply an action stronger than the seeking. Also, the “while he is near” is even more encouraging than the “while he may be found” because it implies we can call out to Him right from where we are presently.
Through Isaiah, God’s wonderful and very open invitation had been extended. (Isaiah 55:1) The blessing God had in mind for His people was also made clear in the succeeding verses. The warning to be taken to heart is that if we fail to seek God now He may eventually be hidden from us and if we do not call on Him now we may become so separated from Him that He will no longer listen to us. A time of God’s judgment is coming and today presents an opportunity we dare not chance having SLIP AWAY from us.
It is an awful chance we take -- a dangerous gamble with our very soul -- when we think we have plenty of time and many opportunities to seek and call upon God when we have finished with all the other stuff we want to do. Perhaps the younger we are the more inclined we may be to focus such, however it is not an attitude only found amongst youth. Let us NOT NEGLECT the opportunities God is presently providing us to turn and follow in His Will. A more convenient time (note Acts 24:25) may never come.
Have a great day GRABBING HOLD OF THE HOPE GOD OFFERS!

Today I got soaked. It poured and poured down rain, but I wanted to get my walk in anyway. It wasn’t cold, but it sure was wet and it wasn’t long before I could hear my shoes making a squishing sound. The rain is good. It is part of God’s plan for plant, animal, and human life to exist. Without the rain we would have to deal with dust storms, lack of the bountiful greenery we enjoy here in the Northwest, lack of power generated from our hydroelectric dams, and a lack of WATER with which to bathe and drink. WATER is a necessary part of God’s plan to prevent the death of animal life, plant life, as well as human life. Our bodies need WATER. In fact we can live longer without food than we can without WATER. Therefore I don’t mind the rain. I’m glad it is a part of God’s plan.
WATER was a part of the plan during the days of Noah. By it God put to death the wicked while at the same time saving the life of Noah and his family. The rainbow in the sky reminds us of God’s promise to Noah following the flood. (Genesis 9:12-17)
There is also WATER in God’s plan of salvation today. However, some have “watered down” God’s plan by leaving the WATER out? [Now, there’s a strange sounding concept.] While reminding his readers of God’s judgment at the time of Noah and His provision for the salvation of Noah and his family (1 Peter 3:20), Peter paralleled the picture to baptism today.
We read…
“(21) BAPTISM, WHICH CORRESPONDS TO THIS, NOW SAVES YOU, not as a removal of dirt from the body but AS AN APPEAL TO GOD FOR A GOOD CONSCIENCE, THROUGH THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST, (22) who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.” (1 Peter 3:21-22 ESV)
The fact Peter contrasted baptism with simply a washing of the dirt from the body (such as a bath) reveals he had WATER baptism in mind, but for the purpose of being united with Christ and the washing away of sins. (note also Acts 2:38 and Romans 6:3-4) As Peter in his preaching noted the need for repentance (Acts 2:38 and 3:19) and the Scriptures also acknowledge the need for believing (Acts 16:30-31), and confessing (Romans 10:10), we must not forget that there is also WATER in the plan; baptism being an act of submission as we enter into a relationship with Christ by putting Him on. (Galatians 3:26-27) Each one of these -- according the Scriptures -- is directly associated with Christ and the salvation we have through Him.
Again, noting Peter’s parallel between the salvation of Noah and ours, as there was both death (that of the wicked) and salvation (Noah and his
family) associated with the WATER then, with the WATER of baptism there is the death to self (or the old man) and sin that we may be alive to righteousness and God. (read Romans 6:5-14) Therefore let us remember it is God’s plan and He is the One Who included the WATER in it. Yes, WATER is necessary for life and life eternal!
Have a great day HAVING ACCEPTED GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION!

Key To Exemplary Living!
Paul exhorted the church at Corinth to…
“Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV)
Paul was not a perfect man. He acknowledged his great need for the grace of God. (i.e. 1 Timothy 1:15-16; Romans 7:15) However, to look at his life and ministry we would acknowledge he lived an exemplary life. He recognized the great need to practice those things which he taught. (i.e. 2 Thessalonians 3:9-10) He also encouraged others to note the example of those who so walked. (Philippians 3:17)
What is the compelling force that can bring about such living? What must take place for us to be able to live exemplary lives worthy of imitation? The statement has been made, “A LIVING Christ in a LIVING man is a LIVING sermon.” [Original source unknown. Emphasis mine.]
Note how Paul acknowledged such as the reality for his life.
“It is no longer I who live, but CHRIST who LIVES IN ME. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV)
If Christ is truly ALIVE in us it will show. Just as history has revealed Christ cannot be ultimately ignored, for Him to be ALIVE in us He cannot be hidden. When Jesus has become our life as in the case of Paul, we too will be able to live exemplary lives drawing the focus of others to the Christ Who lives within and reigns above. May we allow the influence of the LIVING CHRIST to transform our lives into a LIVING sermon.
Have a great day ALLOWING CHRIST TO SHINE THROUGH!

Act One!
I enjoy live stage productions whether they be professional, semi-professional community productions, or student actors in a school play. When our children were in school we would attend their productions each night. Such productions are generally composed of many scenes within several acts which all together may either simply entertain or convey a POWERFUL story.
When it comes to the varied scenes of life, it is possible for one single act to produce a POWERFUL outcome. Lives can be drastically and forever changed for either good or bad by the single act of one individual. A single act can produce dire consequences or bring about hope beyond measure.
In the fifth chapter of Romans Paul provided a dynamic contrast between the actions of two men: Adam and Christ. We may wonder how Adam could disobey as he did when he lived in the paradise of God. Nevertheless, he did and sin has reigned since that time. But praise God for the hope that has been provided through Christ, the Son of God.
Paul summed up his contrast in the following verses.
“(18) Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so ONE ACT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS LEADS TO JUSTIFICATION AND LIFE for all men. (19) For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so BY THE ONE MAN’S OBEDIENCE THE MANY WILL BE MADE RIGHTEOUS.” (Romans 5:18-19 ESV)
The “one trespass” of Adam brought about the hardship of labor, the dealing with thorns, the facing of death, and expulsion from the paradise of God. (Genesis 3:17-19 & 24). Sin separates from God. Therefore Paul spoke of the condemnation which came by the one trespass of Adam. On the other hand, the POWERFUL act of Christ brought about the means of our reconciliation to God (Romans 5:10-11), justification, and life. Without Christ we would not have this hope.
Through the one act of the first man, mankind was left with a dilemma we could not remedy ourselves. However, the POWERFUL provision produced by the one act of Christ on the cross is sufficient to rescue us from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9) Let us praise God for the glorious provision we have in Christ as we press on in acts of righteousness to His glory. Because of Christ we have an eternal hope associated with a heavenly scene.
Have a great day ALLOWING CHRIST AND RIGHTEOUSNESS TO REIGN IN YOUR LIFE!

A Good Return!
What kind of return do we get for our actions? Granted, some may not treat us well regardless of the KINDNESSES we show them. However, most often, the manner in which we approach life and the consideration we give others drastically impacts the character of what comes back our direction.
Solomon noted…
“A MAN WHO IS KIND BENEFITS HIMSELF, but a cruel man hurts himself.” (Proverbs 11:17 ESV)
Sometimes people can become their own worst enemy. Because of the way some approach life -- trying to gain every advantage for self they can -- they find themselves without friends or those who would help them when assistance is needed. How lonely it can be at the top when one has stepped on everyone else to get there!
Someone has stated, “Kindness is one thing you can’t give away. It always comes back.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
Solomon put it this way:
“(24) One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. (25) WHOEVER BRINGS BLESSING WILL BE ENRICHED, and ONE WHO WATERS WILL HIMSELF BE WATERED.” (Proverbs 11:24-25 ESV)
Here Solomon contrasted the outcomes between a stingy and generous spirit. According to the principle of sowing and reaping (Galatians 6:7), sowing KINDNESS generally means one will reap a harvest of the same. We may not always reap the KINDNESS from everywhere it has been sown, but it will come back to us from those who recognize such being characteristic of our life.
There are many things we may be limited in what we can give. KINDNESS is something we all have that we can share. It doesn’t have to cost money though it may at times be the providing of some. The act may simply be the giving of a little of our time to another who needs encouragement or a helping hand. It may be the act of forgiving and deciding to not hold ill feelings toward one who has wronged us. KINDNESS can take on many forms, each one with the potential of benefiting others while at the same time ultimately enriching and refreshing ourselves.
Paul exhorted…
“(9) And LET US NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for IN DUE SEASON WE WILL REAP, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have opportunity, LET US DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)
Have a great day RECEIVING THE BENEFITS OF SOWING TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

Renewed Strength!
There are some things I just NEVER TIRE of. It matters not how many occasions there are I’m glad to have the opportunity again. Today brought one of those experiences. In our area we get frequent opportunities to see bald eagles. Last Saturday as my walk took me out toward one of our area lighthouses along the Strait of Juan de Fuca I saw a bald eagle perched on a branch along a high bluff. Today, as I walked not far from the same area my gaze was drawn upward to watch two bald eagles soaring overhead. I am always mesmerized by the majestic sight of these creatures of God. I NEVER TIRE of lifting my gaze to see them in magnificent flight, unable to help wondering what it would be like to soar along with them enjoying the view they have from above.
Though I was about eleven miles into my walk, having my focus uplifted to view these two bald eagles I felt a sense of renewal as I continued to ponder the sight while I walked on. Every time I see an eagle with its wings extended majestically as it seems to effortlessly glide along uplifted by the currents of the wind beneath its wings, I am reminded of the encouragement provided through the prophet Isaiah.
We read…
“(28) Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (20) HE GIVES POWER TO THE FAINT, and to him who has no might HE INCREASES STRENGTH. (30) Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; (31) but THEY WHO WAIT FOR THE LORD SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH; they shall MOUNT UP WITH WINGS LIKE EAGLES; they SHALL RUN AND NOT BE WEARY; they SHALL WALK AND NOT FAINT.” (Isaiah 40:28-31 ESV)
Perhaps there are times when we find ourselves flapping along as hard as we can to make things work in life when what is needed is for us to wait on the Lord, looking to Him for the strength He will supply as we extend our “wings” in faith to catch the current He provides to carry us along and lift us up. When we try to handle life by our own wisdom and strength it should be no surprise that we feel weary and faint. However, as we walk on with God and seek for His Will to be worked out in our life we can find the strength to run on WITHOUT BECOMING WEARY.
How many times have you found yourself expending much time and energy in a work of the Lord and you felt more of a sense of fulfillment and joy and uplift rather than weariness? May we remember those experiences as we continue to submit to God, waiting upon Him as He continues His work in and through us. Uplifted by His wind beneath our “wings” let us be encouraged by His strengthening that will keep us from becoming weary in doing good.
Have a great day SOARING BY THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD!

Powerful Story!
Heard any good stories lately? Recently read any good books? Anything worth reading again and sharing with others? Hopefully your answer is “yes” and though you may have done much reading of various sorts (especially those of you who are students) I pray that the Scriptures and the good story of Jesus were included.
As Luke began his Gospel, he stated…
“(1) Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, (2) just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, (3) it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, TO WRITE AN ORDERLY ACCOUNT FOR YOU, most excellent Theophilus, (4) THAT YOU MAY HAVE CERTAINTY CONCERNING THE THINGS YOU HAVE BEEN TAUGHT.” (Luke 1:1-4 ESV)
When John concluded his Wonderful Gospel, he remarked…
“Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. WERE EVERY ONE OF THEM TO BE WRITTEN, I SUPPOSE THAT THE WORLD ITSELF COULD NOT CONTAIN THE BOOKS that would be written.” (John 21:25 ESV)
We may read or hear stories which bring a tear to our eye, make us angry, inspire us, etc. Such reveals we have a good heart that can be touched by the words. The Greatest Story ever told is the Gospel -- the “Good News” -- of Jesus. However, unless it becomes MORE THAN A STORY to us it will never have the impact on the story of our life that it should.
The Gospel of Jesus is the Greatest Story ever told because it reveals the greatest love ever demonstrated and greatest hope ever offered for not just this life, but for eternity. It is through the Gospel that “life and immortality” have been brought to light. (2 Timothy 1:10) We are called through the Gospel in order that we may obtain the glory of Jesus. (2 Thessalonians 2:14) The story of Jesus -- when received and properly understood -- is destined to CHANGE OUR LIFE for good and forever. The Gospel is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16) and life transformation.
God has preserved for us a Great Book (the Bible) that contains the Greatest Story we could ever read again and again. May we move from viewing it as just a story to allowing it to become everything to us so that in view of Jesus and all He offers, the story our own life will be gloriously transformed in preparation for an eternity with Him.
Have a great day KEEPING YOUR STORY POWERFULLY LINKED TO HIS!

Don't Forget Self!
I know that when I point my finger at others I must be very careful because when doing so I have three fingers pointing back at myself. [Take a look at your hand while pointing and you will see what I mean.] It is often too easy to judge the actions of others when we may be guilty ourselves.
Perhaps the fact we have the struggle ourselves makes its presence in others so obvious.
Note Paul’s warning to the church at Rome.
“(3) Do you suppose, O man -- you who judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself -- that you will escape the judgment of God? (4) Or DO YOU PRESUME ON THE RICHES OF HIS KINDNESS and FORBEARANCE and PATIENCE, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?” (Romans
2:3-4 ESV)
Where the English Standard Version has the word “presume”, other translations have “despise” (NKJV) and “contempt” (NIV). The Greek word is “kataphroneis” which is a combination of “kata” meaning “down” and “phren” which means “mind” and according to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words “kataphroneo” literally means to think down upon or against anyone and signifies to think slightly of.
Being PRESUMPTIVE can be dangerous. When we PRESUME too much we can find ourselves in deep trouble or disappointment. For us to PRESUME we can judge the lives of others and do the same things ourselves without fearing God’s judgment we have not thought as seriously (have thought only slightly) about God’s kindness, forbearance and patience which is intended to lead us to repentance; a change of direction in life. To PRESUME we can acknowledge Christ and then live anyway we choose, expecting God’s grace to just automatically take care of our sin, is to misunderstand the relationship we are to have with the Lord as well as what His grace is all about. (note Jude 4) Such action also PRESUMES God’s patience is never-ending -- a gamble we dare not take.
Praise God for the riches of His kindness, forbearance, and patience! We need it all. However, let us respond appropriately by seeking to please Him in all we do. As we acknowledge the things that are out of place in the lives of others let us consider our own actions as well. When we are willing to recognize and remove the log from our own eye we will be able to see much clearer as we help another get the “speck” out of theirs. (Matthew 7:5) We will also be more likely to be gentler in the process.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A PENITENT SPIRIT BEFORE GOD!

God's Righteous Word!
God’s Word! Many people love it while others hate it. It is used by many as a guide for life though some use all of it while others take only the parts they want. Some seek the pure truth contained within it while others twist its meaning to their own destruction. (note 2 Peter 3:16)
Recently a decision was made by the Colorado State Supreme Court to change the sentence of a man convicted of murder and rape because a Bible had been taken into the jury room during deliberation. After the jurors were instructed by the judge to make an “INDIVIDUAL MORAL ASSESSMENT”, the Bible was researched and discussed by the jurors before deciding the man should be sentenced to death. The Supreme Court of the State of Colorado (in a 3 to 2
decision) stated the jurors had acted improperly when they consulted the Bible and changed the man’s sentence to life without parole simply because the Bible had been brought into the picture. I guess an “INDIVIDUAL MORAL ASSESSMENT” is only valid if it is based on something other than God’s Word.
One of the things which strikes me most about this case is that the Bible used to be used in our country’s courtrooms to swear people in when they were going to testify in court. Now it appears the Bible has no place in the juror deliberation room. Perhaps if God’s Wisdom was recognized more there would be fewer court cases to be deliberated.
What has happened to the MORAL COMPASS of this day and age? How can a world find its way that uses a MORAL COMPASS which points any direction one chooses? Praise God HIS MORAL COMPASS still points in the true direction of godliness and holiness (2 Peter 3:11), the manner in which we are to conduct our lives.
The Hebrew writer’s words are still true…
“For THE WORD OF GOD IS LIVING AND ACTIVE, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
(Hebrews 4:12 ESV)
Regardless of what the rest of the world does, let us continue to rely upon the power and wisdom of God’s Word. Does it make sense to ignore the “MORAL ASSESSMENT” of life from the One Who created it? May we allow God’s MORAL COMPASS to remain living and active in our life.
Have a great day ACCEPTING GOD’S MORAL ASSESSMENT REGARDING LIFE!

Avoiding The Crisis!
Sometimes people struggle in what they do because they are experiencing an IDENTITY CRISIS. They struggle in coming to grips with who they are and what their purpose in life might be. When there is a struggle with one’s personal IDENTITY it makes it difficult to relate to others. It also causes some to be unable or unwilling to do certain things because they feel those tasks are either below their dignity or they have something to prove.
Some at Corinth appear to have had a problem with pride because they had forgotten what they had been. (1 Corinthians 1:26-31) When we have a proper understanding of where we have been, where we are going, and what our HIGHEST IDENTITY is we will find it much easier to humbly submit to the serving of others. Jesus Himself provided us with such an example.
John recorded…
“(1) Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, (3) JESUS, KNOWING THAT THE FATHER HAD GIVEN ALL THINGS INTO HIS HANDS, AND THAT HE HAD COME FROM GOD AND WAS GOING BACK TO GOD, (4) ROSE FROM SUPPER. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. (5) Then he poured water into a basin AND BEGAN TO WASH THE DISCIPLES’ FEET and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” (John 13:1-5 ESV)
Here was the “Master” serving the “disciples” rather than the other way around. Jesus had no IDENTITY CRISIS. He knew Who He was. He knew where He had come from. He knew what His purpose was for being in this realm and where He was destined.
To truly recognize our IDENTITY as being “children of God” and “servants of God” we will avoid the crisis. We will not be lacking in good works. We will be humble enough to serve the needs of others regardless of what those needs might be. With a proper acknowledgement of who we are and Whose we are, we can live life without feeling we have something to prove about ourselves because it will be the wisdom and power of God that will ultimately be revealed in and through us. May we be willing to submit “to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21) By so doing our actions will be IDENTIFIED with those of our Lord.
Have a great day LIVING A CHRIST IDENTIFIED LIFE!

A Law!
There are times when something is observed and someone exclaims, “There ought to be a law!” Laws help bring a sense of order to life. A society without some rules would be nothing but chaos. Established laws help us know what is expected and what consequences might be met if the laws are ignored.
After warning the church at Galatia regarding the works of the flesh and the consequence for those who practice such (Galatians 5:19-21), Paul went on to state…
“(22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control; AGAINST SUCH THINGS THERE IS NO LAW.” (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV)
Now those are some good works. However, did you note Paul’s statement regarding law? He wrote, “Against such things there is no law.” Who would possibly think of making a law against love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Who wouldn’t think those were good things? Also consider how many laws might not be necessary if everyone lived lives producing such fruit as this! We have complete freedom to practice these in our life. By living such before God, keeping in step with the Spirit, there is no law to condemn us for producing such fruit in our life.
Have a great day FREELY EXERCISING THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT!

Peripheral Impact!
When Israel stated their desire to have a king so they could be like all the other nations (1 Samuel 8:5 & 20), God had Samuel warn the people what being under the rule of a king would be like. (1 Samuel 8:10-18) Nevertheless the people insisted on having a king anyway. (1 Samuel 8:19) Saul was God’s choice for Israel’s first king and he was anointed with the exhortation toward both the faithfulness of the king and the people in following the Lord so that things would go well with them. (1 Samuel 12:14) Unfortunately Saul’s heart did not remain faithful to God and he was eventually rejected as king. Reading through the history of the kings of Israel and Judah it is sad to note how so many of them tended to lead the nation again and again away from faithfulness to God.
David, God’s choice to replace Saul, had his own struggles with temptation and sin. However, David possessed a heart which continually drew him back to God. He was willing to humbly acknowledge his sin and recognized the impact his own personal choices and the direction of his own life could have ON OTHERS.
Note an expression of David’s solemn desire with regard to others.
“LET NOT THOSE WHO HOPE IN YOU BE PUT TO SHAME THROUGH ME, O Lord God of hosts; LET NOT THOSE WHO SEEK YOU BE BROUGHT TO DISHONOR THROUGH ME, O God of Israel.” (Psalm 69:6 ESV)
Whether we are aware of it or not (even irregardless of whether we want it to be so) there are people who will note our example, some of whom will follow it. Our choices not only greatly impact our own lives, but we must also recognize the extent to which they can potentially touch the lives OF OTHERS.
Note the serious warning Jesus gave.
“(1) And he said to his disciples, ‘Temptations to sin are sure to come, but WOE TO THE ONE THROUGH WHOM THEY COME! (2) It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea THAN THAT HE SHOULD CAUSE ONE OF THESE LITTLE ONES TO SIN.’” (Luke 17:1-2 ESV)
May we never lose sight of the impact beyond our own selves with regard to the way we conduct our lives. Let us closely guard our actions lest we be guilty of leading ANOTHER astray. However, let us also be encouraged that as we live faithful to God there is great potential for OTHERS to follow that lead. As Paul exhorted the Corinthian brethren to follow his example as he followed the example of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1) may we resolve to do likewise.
Have a great day LIVING A LIFE WORTH IMITATING.

Wind Resistance!
This was one of my regular long walk days. However, today was one of those days I was tempted to cut my walk a little shorter. It wasn’t exceptionally cold. I wasn’t even having to contend with rain. Today it was the wind I had to battle. At times I found myself walking leaning to the side while at other times I had to really lean forward into the wind. Some of the gusts almost completely stopped my forward motion, but I was determined to get my usual miles in and therefore PRESSED ON though it took me a little longer than usual to go the distance. I did appreciate the moments when I was among trees which sheltered me from the wind’s force. This offered some relief and encouragement to PRESS ON to the finish.
Life is like that. Sometimes we may feel the benefit of having the wind behind us. I took advantage of those moments today to pick up my pace. Other times we may feel forces attempting to slow our forward motion or even trying to stop us in our tracks. Perhaps there are times we are tempted to quit because the effort needed to PRESS ON seems so great. Nevertheless we must be determined to PRESS ON.
What we need to maintain is a focus that helps us remember PRESSING ON will be worth the effort and that there is strength beyond ourselves for resisting the force of the winds that may rise against us in this life. God has provided encouragement and instruction so that we can develop a faith which keeps us from being driven and tossed about by the wind. (James 1:6)
Paul encouraged the church at Ephesus as he wrote…
“(11) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, (12) to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, (13) until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, (14) so THAT WE MAY NO LONGER BE CHILDREN, TOSSED TO AND FRO by the waves and CARRIED ABOUT BY EVERY WIND OF DOCTRINE, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” (Ephesians 4:11-14 ESV)
We may experience the force of ideologies and teachings which conflict with the truth of God’s Word, but we must continue to mature and grow stronger in resisting the force to go with those winds. Sometimes those gusts may feel quite strong, but at those times let us lean forward in prayer as we PRESS ON with a determination to go the distance with God. Let us also be encouraged by the refreshment of spirit we can find in the times of shelter with other believers.
If I was a fair-weather walker I would not be in the physical shape I am in today because I would not get in the miles I usually do. If we are fair-weather Christians we will not develop the maturity and stamina necessary to be the spiritual beings God desires us to be now and for eternity. There will be times when the walking is more difficult than at others times. Jesus has gone the way ahead of us so that we can follow His lead. Let us retain a determination to PRESS ON in His steps with the knowledge that the one who endures to the end will be saved! (Matthew 10:22;
24:13)

What Is Revealed Presently?
Perhaps we have the desire for more; more money, more possessions, more responsibility, to be trusted with the big stuff of life, etc. However, a key consideration we must be open to is how well are we handling what we have right now?
The statement has been made, “Show me a man who cannot bother to do little things and I’ll show you a man who cannot be trusted to big things.” (Lawrence D. Bell, quoted by Peter Potter, “All About Success”, 1988, “Anything Worth Doing”) [source: “A Treasury of Business Quotations”, p.148, compiled by Michael C. Thomsett]
Jesus put it this way…
“(10) One who is FAITHFUL IN A VERY LITTLE is also FAITHFUL IN MUCH, and one who is DISHONEST IN A VERY LITTLE is also DISHONEST IN MUCH. (11) If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? (12) And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?” (Luke 16:10-12 ESV)
If we are not TRUSTWORTHY with what we have now why should we expect to be trusted with more? We are not to approach life from the standpoint of “If I had… then I would do….”, but rather handle honorably, rightly, and in a God glorifying manner what we do have presently! It is a matter of FAITHFULNESS in all things whether it be with little or much or with worldly wealth or the true riches of a spiritual nature.
Can we be trusted with true riches? The “seed” of the answer to that question is contained in how we are handling the “little stuff” right now. What is “germinating” as we go on through life? How do we think God feels about those who waste His possessions? Since we belong to Him we ought to give serious consideration as to whether we are wasting our life or using it well. Even our worldly possessions can be used to the glory of God as we meet the needs of others. Perhaps we should guard against dividing our view of daily living between the secular and the sacred as we recognize all we have belongs to God Who has given it and should be used in service to His glory and praise.
Let us be encouraged by Jesus’ words. If we are FAITHFUL with the “little stuff” we will be trusted with greater things. If we learn to handle worldly wealth we will be able to rightly appreciate and handle the true riches associated with the kingdom of God. Then, as we show ourselves to be FAITHFUL stewards of all God has placed in our hands now, we can look forward to someday inheriting a glorious eternal possession of our own. May we glorify God as we seek to do all things well!
Have a great day HONORABLY TACKLING ALL THE TASKS OF LIFE!

Super Bond!
Varying situations in life reveal who our true friends are. Perspectives offered regarding the subject of friends include statements such as “He who ceases to be your friend never was a good one.” and “A friend that you can buy with presents can be bought away from you.” Activities “friends” choose to join together in can also have a bearing on how cemented (or not) that relationship is for it has also been stated that “Friendships cemented together with sin do not hold.”
Those who becomes “friends in crime”, if one gets caught they generally tell on the other so they both end up “doing the time.” Unrighteous activities (involvement in sin) with others not only places one at odds with God, but most often with each other as well. There is a greater bond we should seek to apply to our relationships with one another.
Paul exhorted those at Colosse…
“(12) Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, (13) bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (14) And above all these put on LOVE, WHICH BINDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:12-14 ESV)
The only thing which has lasting power to cement relationships together is LOVE. Without it we have nothing. (note 1 Corinthians 13:1-3) The super bond of genuine LOVE is vital to our relationship with God, within our families, and in the church because it is the thing which never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:8).
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE LOVE THAT STICKS!

In Our Hands!
You take an ordinary individual, even a timid person, and place something powerfully in their hands and quite often a transformation is seen. Like Tim Allen from the television show “Home Improvement”, when he had some tool he had tweaked to give it MORE POWER, he felt ready to launch into anything no matter how big the job may have seemed. Some, when given a little extra authority will sometimes take on an aura of POWER and confidence they had never exhibited before. To recognize something of POWER being placed in our hands should contribute to a sense of confidence and privilege as it is utilized properly.
As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth he reminded them of his having come to them not with lofty speech or wisdom, but simply in the truth of the message of the cross. (1 Corinthians 2:1-3) He had come in weakness, fear, and trembling in a way which should have revealed clearly there was no POWER in and of Paul himself, because the real POWER rested with God. (1 Corinthians 2:3-5)
Writing to the church at Rome Paul stated…
“(16) For I am not ashamed of THE GOSPEL, for IT IS THE POWER OF GOD FOR SALVATION to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (17) For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” (Romans 1:16-17 ESV)
The POWER of the Gospel message does not rest on us, but in the truth of Christ and the salvation He came to provide. It is the message we as Christians have accepted and are to hold out to those around us. Certainly, some who refuse to accept it may think it foolishness. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 1:18) Nevertheless, it is the message we are to continue to be active in sharing.
The Apostles were ordinary men (Acts 4:13), but they were given a POWERFUL message to proclaim. Their acceptance of the truth and their being convicted by it EMPOWERED them to boldly share it. May we also look beyond ourselves and simply let the POWER of the Gospel do its work as we live it and verbally share it with those with whom God brings us into contact. There is no MORE POWERFUL message to bring change to the lives of mankind than the truth that has come from God.
Have a great day EXHIBITING A CONFIDENCE IN THE TRUTH OF GOD!

Finding Treasure!
Solomon exhorted…
“(1) My son, if you receive my words and TREASURE UP MY COMMANDMENTS with you, (2) making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; (3) yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, (4) if you seek it like silver and SEARCH FOR IT AS FOR HIDDEN TREASURES, (5) then you will understand the fear of the Lord and FIND THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD.” (Proverbs 2:2-5 ESV)
Hidden treasure can be passed by or walked right over. Sometimes people are fortunate enough to stumble upon it. However, even when we are not specifically searching, if our eyes are open it can be found as we go along life’s journey. Every time we open God’s word, if our eyes and heart are open we will come upon treasure and walk away enriched. That’s the way it is with all that relates to Christ and the kingdom of God.
As Jesus told the parable of the hidden treasure He referred to one who was willing to sell everything he had in order to make that treasure his. (Matthew 13:44) He did so eagerly! He did so willingly! He did so without complaining or regret because what he happened to find was WORTH EVERYTHING else he possessed! Any pain he might have felt in the parting with his other possessions was lost in the joy of the new found treasure.
Do we view Christ and the kingdom of God the same way or do we hold other treasure closer and dearer? Paul, though blessed with a rich heritage, found no glory or value in it compared to what He had in Christ. Note how he expressed his view of the GREATER VALUE.
Paul declared…
“(4) though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: (5) circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; (6) as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness, under the law blameless. (7) But WHATEVER GAIN I HAD, I COUNTED AS LOSS FOR THE SAKE OF CHRIST. (8) Indeed, I count everything as loss because of THE SURPASSING WORTH OF KNOWING CHRIST JESUS MY LORD. FOR HIS SAKE I HAVE SUFFERED THE LOSS OF ALL THINGS and count them as rubbish, IN ORDER THAT I MAY GAIN CHRIST” (Philippians 3:4-8 ESV)
May we also recognize the INESTIMABLE VALUE of the kingdom of God and all that relates to it. Let us willingly and eagerly give up anything and everything that may stand between us and the ETERNAL TREASURE God offers.
Have a great day REVEALING HOW CHRIST IS WORTH IT ALL!
