On Top!
Being on top or coming out on top is the aim of the world. No one wants to be at the proverbial “bottom of the food chain” in the business world or in society at large because with the top positions usually come the bigger bucks and better privileges. While some people are willing to work their way to the top there are others who seem to want to begin there. However, it has been noted, “There is only one endeavor in which you can start at the top and that’s digging a hole.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] Regardless of what our goals might be, we all have to start somewhere? What is the picture of our approach to living spiritual lives in this world.
As Jesus tried to help the disciples understand their role in this world, He noted that greatness comes by being WILLING TO BE SERVANT (or slave) of all. ( Mark 9:35 & 10:44) How opposite that notion is to the thinking of the world! Our Lord illustrated with His own life the GREATNESS OF HUMBLE SERVICE in the washing of the disciples feet ( John 13:3-5) and in His willingness to go to the cross on our behalf.
Arrogance is a real problem in the world. It is what keeps people focused on their own desires and from recognizing the interests or needs of others. This attitude is also what keeps many from accepting God and His Will. There are many who think they are on top of their game who will someday be brought down either by life itself or ultimately by God.
Through Isaiah, God declared…
“I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I WILL PUT AN END TO THE POMP OF THE ARROGANT, AND LAY LOW THE POMPOUS PRIDE OF THE RUTHLESS.” ( Isaiah 13:11 ESV)
Sometimes the arrogant need to be brought down a few notches. God opposes the proud, but to the humble He gives grace. ( James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5) Therefore, as we take note of and follow the example of our Lord in the way of HUMBLE SERVICE, let us realize it is through such living that we will ultimately be brought to the top.
Peter exhorted…
“(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that AT THE PROPER TIME HE MAY EXALT YOU, (7) casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. ( 1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV)
Have a great day KNOWING WITH GOD WE COME OUT ON TOP!
