Durable!
The choice of materials with which something is made (in accordance with how it will be used) determines its durability. The statement has been made that religion is the worst cloak, but the best ARMOR one can have. A cloak may cover and provide some warmth and protection from the elements, but when things get really tough what is lacking is revealed. It is ARMOR which provides true protection against the strongest forces.
To consider the concept of “cloaking” being that of covering, hiding, or masking; when such is the essence of one’s religion we may be referring to hypocrisy. But Paul referred to the spiritual ARMOR God has provided for us as Christians so that we can stand our ground. It is sure protection for the genuine Christian against the real forces that would strike at our Christianity.
Paul exhorted…
“(11) Put on THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (12) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. (13) Therefore take up THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, TO STAND FIRM.” ( Ephesians 6:11-13 ESV)
The ARMOR Paul went on to describe is that which covered the front, implying the idea of not retreating, but rather pressing on in the strength of the Lord. We are to put on the “belt of truth”, “the breastplate of righteousness”, have our feet fitted with the readiness of “the gospel of peace”, take up “the shield of faith”, “the helmet of salvation“ and “the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.” ( Ephesians 6:14-19)
How are we equipped? Is our religion merely a cloak that looks nice and makes us feel warm and cozy or is it the true spiritual ARMOR suitable for standing and remaining firm in the truth of God? May we recognize the essence of true Christianity and accept the ARMOR God has provided in order for us to withstand the forces that would try to defeat us.
Have a great day STRENGTHENED BY GOD FOR VICTORIOUS LIVING!
Carl
