Conscience!
We have a daughter-in-law who knows full well there is more to owning a horse than having fun riding. Much effort and many hours must be directed toward a horse. There is conditioning, regular brushing and grooming, feeding, cleaning up after, medical attention, exercising, etc. etc. etc. However, as much as a horse may enjoy and be soothed by a good brushing, it has been pointed out that a galled horse cannot endure the comb. Gall is a sore on the skin that may be caused by friction, and for such an area to be groomed would be intolerable for the animal.
Our conscience can either soothe us or make us unbearably uncomfortable. Sometimes the conscience accuses while other times it excuses or defends us. ( Romans 2:15) When our conscience knows we are not right, even involvement in good things can cause us painful discomfort. We might read a passage of Scripture which should encourage and soothe us, but we realize something is not right in our life and we feel the TWINGE. We may involve ourselves in singing praises with others, but the words feel awkward because we know our words or actions have not been consistently praiseworthy.
Don’t regret or reject a good conscience. Such pangs are a good sign. They indicate we have a conscience that has been properly trained and a heart that remains touchable. There are individuals who have become plagued with a conscience which can no longer be touched. ( 1 Timothy 4:2) Paul also referred to some who had rejected faith and a good conscience and thus shipwrecked their faith. ( 1 Timothy 1:19) There is no reason for our conscience to work against us. The God trained conscience is intended to work for our benefit. And we are blessed when we allow it to do so.
The Hebrew writer requested…
“Pray for us, for we are sure that we have A CLEAR CONSCIENCE, DESIRING TO ACT HONORABLY IN ALL THINGS.” ( Hebrews 13:18 ESV)
Do we share the desire to act honorably in all things? When we feel the TWINGE, let us consult God’s Word and respond accordingly. In this way our conscience will be the blessing God intended it to be.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE GODLY TRAINED VOICE WITHIN!
