Show Me!
There are some things people have difficulty taking our word for when the actions don’t seem to be consistent with the claim. Someone has said that “Love is more easily illustrated than defined.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] The action of love speaks very powerfully to those toward whom it is directed and the reality of its existence is not questioned. On the other hand, it is sad when some hear the words of love, but do not feel its presence through it being demonstrated. Such love is incomplete because when the love is not shown in some way, its existence is understandably questioned. Could the same be true with regard to FAITH? We may believe we have FAITH. We may even declare to others we have FAITH and use words associated with it. But how is FAITH illustrated in our day to day activities? Could the picture of our FAITH be incomplete to the eyes of those who observe our life?
James pointed out…
“(14) What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? … (18) But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith apart from your works, and I WILL SHOW YOU MY FAITH BY MY WORKS.” (James 2:14 & 18)
Just as true love and loving actions go hand in hand, so it is with genuine FAITH and life action. By the manner in which we go about our daily lives, are those around us able to see we truly have FAITH? Or are we seen to be just as worried and fretful about life as the rest of the world? Are we perceived as one who has to have all the answers before we will step out in obedience to the Will of God?
James went on to illustrate his point with the example of Abraham. Abraham’s faith was clearly accompanied by action. In spite of not having full understanding of the situation (James 2:21) Abraham trusted God and the existence of His FAITH was made very evident.
Regarding Abraham’s faith, James stated…
“You see that FAITH WAS ACTIVE along with his works, and FAITH WAS COMPLETED BY HIS WORKS.” (James 2:22 ESV)
God has demonstrated both His love and His faithfulness. He has provided every reason for us to trust Him. Do we love Him? Do we believe Him? Is it evident in the manner in which we approach life’s activities? Without the actions, FAITH is incomplete. May it be demonstrated in our daily lives in such a way that others will want to come to know its benefit as well.
Have a great day COMPLETING FAITH’S PICTURE!

Height of Lowliness!
Estimation of self and others is not always accurate according to human wisdom. Nor is the individual perception of GREATNESS always the same. People who are in high positions are envied by some while pitied by others. However, to have a position of significance is perhaps an ambition of most everyone.
As Jesus and His disciples walked to Capernaum a discussion arose along the way. It was a discussion the disciples were even embarrassed to acknowledge (Mark 9:33-34) when asked by the Lord regarding their conversation. However, the disciples continued to struggle with a proper concept of GREATNESS, for the subject came up again later on. This time it arose from the request for James and John to sit at the Lord’s right and left in His glory. (Mark 10:35-37) Since the others were indignant regarding this request (Mark 10:41) could it have been that each one of them secretly held the same ambition? Such desires and discussion marked the misunderstanding many had regarding the establishment of Christ’s Kingdom. Jesus, pointing out that such positions were for those for whom they were prepared (Mark 10:40), went on to state there was a big difference between the world’s view of GREATNESS and that associated with His Kingdom. (Mark 10:42)
Consider the point Jesus made next.
“(43) But it shall not be so among you. But WHOEVER WOULD BE GREAT among you MUST BE YOUR SERVANT, (44) and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. (45) For even THE SON OF MAN CAME not to be served but TO SERVE, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45 ESV)
We would not deny the GREATNESS of Jesus. He is to be viewed as supreme. We are to allow Him to remain the Sovereign of our whole life. Nevertheless, Jesus took on the lowly stature of a servant (Philippians 2:7) on our behalf and we are encouraged to possess the same mindset. (Philippians 2:5) When we do, there is a sense in which we share His GREATNESS.
According to our Lord it is willing humble service that elevates to the height of GREATNESS in His Kingdom. It is not through jockeying for higher position, but through losing self in service to others that true GREATNESS comes. May we daily follow in the steps of Jesus in this regard.
Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE GREAT SIGNIFICANCE AS A SERVANT!

Being Watched!
Do you ever feel like you are being watched? How does it make you feel? Does it depend on what you are doing at the moment? With technology today there can be cameras placed just about anywhere. They are set up in stores to watch for shoplifters. We may see them on street corners to watch for drug dealing or other illegal activities. They may be set up on the sides of buildings for surveillance of people coming and going. Traffic cams monitor bridges and highways for signs of congestion. And the list goes on with a multitude of reasons for their presence. Some are adamant about hating them, saying it is an infringement on their personal rights as they feel “big brother” (or big government) is always watching. Others appreciate the sense of security the cameras provide and feel they are fine if you have nothing to hide. Perhaps as varied as the reasons for using surveillance cameras are the opinions regarding their existence.
Solomon noted…
“THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE IN EVERY PLACE, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3 ESV)
Perhaps, based on this passage, some picture God as a giant eye in the sky. We know from Scripture God is so much more than that. However, according to Solomon’s statement, such a thought can either be unsettling or encouraging. God has ALL OF LIFE IN VIEW. There have been times when surveillance cameras have been fooled or gotten around, but it is not so with God. He is FULLY AWARE of both the evil and the good in this realm.
The Hebrew writer stated…
“And NO CREATURE IS HIDDEN FROM HIS SIGHT, but ALL ARE NAKED AND EXPOSED TO THE EYES OF HIM to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13 ESV)
Some prefer darkness (i.e. John 3:20) because they don’t want to be exposed. However, not even the darkness provides a hiding place from the view of God. (Psalm 139:12)
As David acknowledged God’s FULL AWARENESS of every aspect of his life wherever he might be (note Psalm 139:1-16), he viewed the fact as a source of encouragement. His aim was not to try to hide from God. David found comfort in living under God’s watchful eye because He knew God was an ever present help in the challenges of life. And in the comfort of His continual view, David looked to God for guidance in the everlasting way. (Psalm 139:24)
The reality of God’s watchfulness should impact us in two ways. First, since nothing is hidden from His view, let us give serious consideration to the reality of our accountability before God with regard to our life activities and choices. Secondly, let us be encouraged that we do have a Heavenly Father Who is FULLY AWARE of all the things (both good and bad) going on in the sphere of our life and He desires to bless us and protect us as we surrender to His Will. May we cherish the blessing and privilege of living each day of our life in His Presence.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY GOD’S DIVINE SUPERVISION!

Compliance vs. Conversion!
“Comply” is defined as being [1] ceremoniously courteous and [2] to conform or adapt one’s actions to another’s wishes, to a rule, or to necessity. “Convert” is defined: [1] to bring over from one belief, view, or party to another. [source of definitions: “Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary”, © 1972]
Note the definition for “comply” referred to ceremony and actions. Compliance can merely be performance of an outward nature. On the other hand, conversion goes deeper to the essence of being and relates to a change in perspective. It is possible to comply with any number of rules and regulations (even God’s) without any real conversion having taken place. If our perspective and desires do not change, changes made may not be very long lasting.
Writing to the church at Rome, Paul noted what had taken place in their lives when they had responded to the message of salvation in Christ and had been baptized into Him to rise into a new life. In the process, the old self had been put to death that the life they lived could be lived to God in Christ Jesus. [read Romans 6:1-11] This was not merely outward change, but went much deeper.
Note Paul’s reference to what marked their obedience and life change.
“(17) But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin HAVE BECOME OBEDIENT FROM THE HEART to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, (18) and, having been set free from sin, HAVE BECOME SLAVES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.” (Romans 6:17-18 ESV)
Their obedience went deeper than merely outward performance. It was FROM THE HEART (or more literally “out from heart”) that they had responded to the truth and committed themselves to it. With an obedience from the inside out they went from being slaves to sin to slaves of righteousness.
It is not coerced religion that is pleasing to God, but rather HEARTFELT that God desires. It is the converted HEART which brings lasting change to life. May we continue to lovingly respond to the God Whom we should always endeavor to please.
Have a great day TOTALLY TRANSFORMED BY THE TRUTH OF GOD!

Saving Face!
Saving grace is a magnanimous and precious gift of God. Saving face, on the other hand, may be a gift we give ourselves. Someone has advised, “The best way to save face is to keep the lower half of it closed.” [source: "1600 Squibs And Quips", compiled by E. C. McKenzie] How often do we find ourselves saying the wrong thing?
Solomon noted…
“(1) For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: … (7) a time to tear, and a time to sew; A TIME TO KEEP SILENCE, AND A TIME TO SPEAK;” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 7 ESV)
We know there is such a time for each. Wisdom is knowing which is which. Perhaps we have encountered those who have nothing to say, but insist on saying it.
Solomon also pointed at that…
“Even a fool who KEEPS SILENT is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” (Proverbs 17:28 ESV)
It appears that keeping the MOUTH SHUT is good advice for just about everyone. There may be times we feel like saying something which is best not said. That is why James advised it is best to be quick to listen, SLOW TO SPEAK, and slow to becoming angry. (James 1:19) Serious consideration needs to be given to the impact of our words.
Solomon also stated that…
“Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but A MAN OF UNDERSTANDING REMAINS SILENT.” (Proverbs 11:12 ESV)
Here is one who knows when to HOLD THE TONGUE. Perhaps this is the individual who tries to place themselves in the other’s shoes. There is an attempt to be neighborly, striving to get along by helping rather than hurting. It is truly a small person who puts others down in an attempt to elevate self. It’s also sad when “grudge fences” are erected so that neighbors can live as if the other does not exist.
Note one more of the many statements Solomon made regarding speech.
“When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but WHOEVER RESTRAINS HIS LIPS IS PRUDENT.” (Proverbs 10:19 ESV)
Continual talk can eventually get us into trouble. Either we will say something we regret or people will get tired of listening to us. Let us consider the impact and relevance of what we say as we look to God for His wisdom to know when to speak and when to BE SILENT. That SILENCE may speak a powerful message of love, meekness, patience, and understanding that will open a door for when a good word does need to be spoken.
Have a great day RECOGNIZING SILENCE CAN BE GOLDEN!

Feeding The Hunger!
Regarding the discussion of our physical health, there is a lot of advise that gets passed around. The internet is full of health information, some of which is not sound advise and it may be difficult to sort through it all. It is therefore important to be careful what advise we accept. When it comes to dealing with colds or fever I have heard the statement made, “Feed a cold and starve a fever or perhaps it is the other way around.” Which is it? Where is the certainty?
Someone has said, “Feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death.” [original source unknown] Feeding to starve may sound like an odd concept, but in this case it is true. The WORD of God is to our lives what food is to our bodies. As our bodies distribute what we eat to every cell of the body, so the WORD needs to touch and give life to every aspect of our being. And by feeding our faith, fear and worry will not receive what they need to survive.
Paul stated…
“So FAITH COMES FROM HEARING, and hearing through THE WORD OF CHRIST.” (Romans 10:17 ESV)
Though many pills and special drinks have been marketed as substitutes for healthy eating, there is just no substitute for time spent in the WORD of God. If many spent as little time eating as they do in the Word, the toll on their bodies would quickly become evident.
Jesus encouraged…
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. THE WORDS THAT I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU ARE SPIRIT AND LIFE.” (John 6:63 ESV)
Are we reading? Are we listening? Are we gaining the spiritual nourishment God has provided? What is it that fills our plate to nourish the life?
May we be like Peter who declared to the Lord…
“Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE,” (John 6:68 ESV)
It might not hurt some of us to miss a meal now and then. However, let us never neglect regular time spent feasting on the WORD of God.
Have a great day PROPERLY NOURISHED FOR LIFE ETERNAL!

May The Force Be With You!
In the “Star Wars” motion picture, written and directed by George Lucas, we have the classic struggle between good and evil. As Luke Skywalker was being encouraged to cross over to the “dark side”, he kept being told, “It is your DESTINY.” Was it? Though the power of the “dark side” was a challenge to resist, Luke refused to accept that crossing over to the “dark side” truly was his DESTINY. However, it would have become his DESTINY had he given in to the force of the “dark side” as his father, Darth Vader, had done.
When we consider our own DESTINY we must understand the role our choices play in the process. There is power which can influence us toward good or evil. But what is the DESTINY God has in mind for us?
As Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica he contrasted those who lived as children of light and those who were of the darkness. However, the relationship they had with Christ was the determining factor with regard to their DESTINY.
Paul encouraged…
“(9) For GOD HAS NOT DESTINED US FOR WRATH, BUT TO OBTAIN SALVATION THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, (10) who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. (11) Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9-11
ESV)
God created us in His image, sent His son to redeem us from sin, and provided His Spirit to bring renewal to our lives -- all because the DESTINY He has set before us is not to experience His wrath, but rather eternal life and glory with Him. The power of light is greater than that of the darkness. May we continue to surrender to God, relying upon His strength and wisdom as we walk in the light (1 John 1:7), so that this DESTINY can fully be realized.
Have a great day WALKING IN THE POWER AND LIGHT OF CHRIST!

Give It A Shot!
A couple items I try to keep handy around our house are a roll of duct tape and a can of WD-40®. With these two items I am prepared to either hold things firmly together or allow others to work more smoothly. As the can of WD-40® states: “Stops Squeaks, Protects Metal, Loosens Rusted Parts, Frees Sticky Mechanisms”.
We have a sliding glass door which periodically becomes hard to open. It can get so difficult that even with both hands and a little grunting the door will hardly budge. In that condition this door to our deck becomes a real source of frustration. When the challenge first occurred I lifted the heavy glass door out of its track and tried adjusting the rollers on the bottom. After doing this several times I remembered my can of WD-40® and decided to spray a little along the door’s track and found that was all it really needed. Now, at the first sign of sticking, I merely give the lower track of this door a few shots of WD-40® which then allows it to be easily slide open with the strength of just one finger!
Perhaps you have experienced a bicycle wheel, wagon wheel, wheel to a cart, or some other moveable object which seemed very sluggish. Then with just a few drops of oil or a shot from a can of WD-40® the work is taken out of making the wheel turn or object move.
Perhaps we wish there was a can of something we could spray on our life to help us move through situations easier. Someone has state, “Cheerfulness greases the axles of the world.” [source: listing of sentence sermons]
There are all sorts of tasks we find ourselves having to do; some being more pleasant than others. Nevertheless they are things which must be done. Approaching them with an attitude of groaning and moaning never makes them go any smoother. But when approached with the CHEERFUL attitude of one who seeks to always do their best to the glory of God (i.e. Ephesians 6:7), some of the laboriousness may be taken out of the work.
Solomon stated…
“All the days of the afflicted are evil, but THE CHEERFUL OF HEART HAS A CONTINUAL FEAST.” (Proverbs 15:15 ESV)
Many things may attempt to aggravate us. Some things may feel to be a real burden. To change such things is not always within our power. However, the attitude with which we approach these situations or tasks can make a world of difference is how we get through them.
Just back a couple verses Solomon pointed out…
“A GLAD HEART MAKES A CHEERFUL FACE, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed.” (Proverbs 15:13 ESV)
The spirit with which we go about our daily tasks can greatly impact how we get through them. Next time we have something that has to be done, let us give it a shot of CHEERFULNESS and see the difference it makes. Doing things with complaining and grumbling (note Philippians 2:14) will only add weight and create drag, thus making the work even harder. Let us keep our focus on all we do being done to the glory of God that we may receive the “oil of gladness” (Isaiah 61:3) being in His favor provides. It is the CHEERFUL HEART that can lubricate the wheels of our actions as we go about our day to day tasks with the sincere desire to be faithful servants of God with regard to whatever is at hand. May it be so in our life.
Have a great day SERVING TO GOD’S GLORY LIKE A WELL OILED MACHINE!

Following!
Sometimes in the grocery store I will get a little ahead of my wife with the shopping cart and I will turn and say, “I’m following you.” This is usually followed by her response, “I can tell.” Following is not going ahead, but rather coming after!
As Jesus began to clearly reveal to His disciples that He would be rejected by the Jewish leaders, killed, but then would rise again (Mark 8:31-32), Peter refused to accept the possibility. Mark’s account tells us Peter took Jesus aside and rebuked Him. (Mark 8:33) Jesus in turn rebuked Peter by saying, “GET BEHIND ME, Satan!” and told Peter he did not have in mind the things of God. (Mark 8:33) Instead of following, Peter was trying to do some leading here. Instead of trying to be in front, he needed to FALL BEHIND JESUS, remembering He was to be Master and Peter was to remain disciple.
Note what Jesus went on to emphasize.
“And he called to him the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and TAKE UP HIS CROSS and FOLLOW ME.” (Mark 8:34 ESV)
Jesus expressed three directives here associated with being His disciples: the denying of self (surrendering of our will to His), being willing to take up our cross (enduring as faithful disciples for His Name’s sake) and following (allowing Him to continue to do the leading). Each of these are to be characteristic of our MANNER OF LIVING as Christians. Our cross is not taken up to die there, but to PRESS ON with. Jesus was not referring to an end, but rather to an ONGOING LIFE OF FOLLOWING Him.
Remember when the psalmist stated…
“Even THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4 ESV)
The valleys were the route to the higher country for seasonal pasturing of the sheep and there were a variety of dangers for which a good shepherd would be on the look out. David, viewing God as his loving Shepherd, saw himself not left in the valley of the shadow of death to die, but rather LED THROUGH it. And He was comforted and encouraged to have the care and guidance of God on which to depend.
It is possible we could literally experience the giving up of our physical life for the cause of Christ. Perhaps such a moment would not be found to be too difficult. However, the real challenge is maintaining a willingness to continue on day to day denying self, carrying our cross, and following Christ the Good Shepherd (John 10) As His true disciples, such should be characteristic of our MANNER OF LIVING.
Let us remain BEHIND JESUS, allowing Him to do the leading. As we do this in life, we will be prepared to eventually be led by Him into eternal glory with Him. May we continue to daily PRESS ON after Him.
Have a great day LIVING ON DAILY FOR THE LORD!

The Inner Sanctum!
The inner sanctum. The inner room. A place of retreat for reflection, study, and working things over. A hideaway out of the sight of others where we are free to ponder alone in privacy. We all have one and there is the need for serious consideration regarding what we choose to bring in within its walls. Someone has stated, “Your mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] What do we peruse while retreating within ourselves?
Paul urged…
“Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is HONORABLE, whatever is JUST, whatever is PURE, whatever is LOVELY, whatever is COMMENDABLE, if there is any EXCELLENCE, if there is anything WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)
If this were the only passage dealing with godly principles for guarding OUR THINKING, would you not say it just about covers it all? Whatever does not fit into one of these eight categories should be dispelled from the inner sanctum of the mind. The things we THINK become our actions and verbal responses to life’s varying situations. Therefore the volumes of thoughts we allow to sit on the shelves of our mind need to be seriously considered.
Others may not always know what goes on within those walls, but we do and God does. And if we truly want our inner sanctum to be a holy sanctuary for truly beneficial retreat, our earnest desire needs to be that expressed by the psalmist David.
“Let the words of my mouth and THE MEDITATION OF MY HEART BE ACCEPTABLE IN YOUR SIGHT, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14
ESV)
Have a great day OF RIGHTEOUS REFLECTION!

Intended Use!
Though we have continued to have some beautiful days, they have been starting out with a good hard frost because of our clear night skies. Such cold mornings mean before my wife and I head off to our respective offices we have to scrape the ice from the windows of our vehicles. Last night as we came home from the store, noticing we once again had very clear skies, I commented that we would be scraping windows in the morning. My wife then stated, “It’s too bad we don’t have one of those things that protects the car so we don’t have to scrape.” And I responded, “You mean a garage?”
What my wife was referring to was a plastic tarp that can be placed over the windshield of the car to shield it from the moisture that collects, freezes and turns to ice. In the morning it can be removed to reveal a clear, dry windshield, thus being spared the time it takes standing in the cold scraping the ice off. However, a garage in which to park a car at night is the best protection. We had to laugh at my response because we do have a garage, but it is full of so much stuff there is no room to park either of our two vehicles.
Perhaps you have received one of those “Only In America” lists via e-mail. One of the statements on such a list refers to the idea that where else would you find people parking an expensive vehicle on the street or in the driveway while locking up all their “junk” in a garage? How many things do we seem to get backwards? The truth is our garage is not serving the PURPOSE for which it was built!
When it comes to our individual lives, do we find ourselves cluttering it up with so much “junk” there is difficulty in finding suitable space for that which is of real value? Just like a house or garage where there are many things stored away which vary greatly in value and usefulness, so it can be with our lives.
Paul noted…
“(20) Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. (21) Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, SET APART AS HOLY, USEFUL TO THE MASTER OF THE HOUSE, READY FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.” (2 Timothy
2:20-21 ESV)
It is important for us to take a close look at our lives and see where there is the necessity of some “house” cleaning. We need to move out the “junk” so that we may truly live our lives for the HOLY PURPOSES for which God created and called us. As we acknowledge that our lives are set on the foundation of the truth of Jesus Christ, let us keep in mind the godly PURPOSES which are to be associated with our day to day activities. May we become more and more a VESSEL FOR HONORABLE USE in the hands of God as we allow Him to be the Master of our lives.
Have a great day BEING PUT TO HOLY USE!

Considering the Evidence!
Sorting through the evidence in court trials can be very challenging. As each side of a case looks at the evidence, they generally seek to use that which most supports their side. In the process of it all there are times when great embarrassment is felt either by the kind of evidence presented or in situations when the evidence is proven to not hold up in court. But in the end the jury and judge consider the entirety of the evidence presented to declare an unbiased VERDICT.
As we consider the VERDICT which matters most, the worst embarrassment and that of eternal consequence would be that of being arrested for being a Christian and then released for lack of evidence. What evidence is accumulating as we go about our daily lives? Is the evidence substantial? Is it circumstantial? Is it fabricated? For the evidence of our life to be laid out, what would the true VERDICT be?
As Jesus talked with Nicodemus, He stated…
“(19) And THIS IS THE JUDGMENT: THE LIGHT HAS COME INTO THE WORLD, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. (20) For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. (21) BUT WHOEVER DOES WHAT IS TRUE COMES TO THE LIGHT, SO THAT IT MAY BE CLEARLY SEEN THAT HIS DEEDS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN GOD.” (John 3:19-21 ESV)
The Light has come! Some have loved the Light while others have hated the Light! Light exposes. Light pierces the darkness to reveal what is truly present. In the Light of God, what does the evidence of our life reveal regarding our view of and association with the Light? What is the VERDICT based on the mounting evidence of our actions and words as we go from day to day? As we claim to belong to Christ is there enough evidence to convict us?
May we be substantially convicted by the truth of God’s Word to make the changes that still need to be made so that we can genuinely live with conviction the faith and godliness we have been called to possess. If we are going to be convicted for something, let it be for being a genuine Christian. (note 1 Peter 4:14-16) In this there is no embarrassment or shame.
Have a great day KEEPING CHRIST EVIDENT IN YOUR LIFE!

Who We Know!
There are some situations in life where it is concluded it is not what you know, but who you know that makes the difference. The “who you know” is what at times gets people moved up the ladder in the business world or in social circles. Sometimes the “who you know” can even get one off the hook in unpleasant circumstances. There is also an element of truth to this statement which we should consider with regard to our approach to day to day living.
We live life recognizing there are many unknowns. Though we may set goals and make plans for the FUTURE regarding furthering education, employment, family, retirement, etc., we do so understanding the possibility all may not turn out exactly as imagined. Some dreams for this life may never be realized while others may turn out better than foreseen. However, there is a constant to which we can link our lives to provide the sense of stability we need. Someone has stated, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
Paul approached his ministry and service to God with diligence and humility. We know from the record in Acts and statements Paul made in his letters that he experienced many challenges to his ministry, but many successes as well. And regardless of the unknowns, he continued to press on. Paul unashamedly proclaimed the Gospel of salvation through Christ wherever he went. Even chains and imprisonment could not silence this man. (2 Timothy
2:9) Regardless of the unknowns he might face, Paul was willing to press on (i.e. Acts 21:13) because of the God he did know!
Perhaps one of Paul’s greatest and most concise faith statements is as
follows:
“…But I am not ashamed, for I KNOW WHOM I HAVE BELIEVED, and I AM CONVINCED that HE IS ABLE TO GUARD UNTIL THAT DAY WHAT HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED TO HIM.” (2 Timothy 1:12 ESV)
Yes, WHO we know and trust our FUTURE to will make all the difference in how we go through each day. May we keep our faith in God, the One Who fully knows what the FUTURE holds for each one of us.
Have a great day LOOKING AHEAD BY LOOKING ABOVE!

Crisp And New!
To me there’s just something special about a crisp new dollar bill. Whether it is handed to me at the bank or in the grocery store, the feel of it in my hand immediately catches my attention. Other bills are softened and wrinkled from being used again and again. But a crisp new dollar bill almost makes me feel like saving it instead of using it. However, dollar bills were made to be spent and we all choose how we use them.
Today started out very literally as a “crisp” NEW DAY. There were frozen puddles of water alongside the road and the frost on the ground has remained in places even until noon. This being my day off, as I headed out on an early morning walk I encountered some slick spots where I had to step carefully. And though it was cold and crisp, with the sun shining in the clear skies, I was enjoying the brand NEW DAY set before me.
Each NEW DAY, just like a crisp new dollar, is intended to be spent. We can’t lock the days away in a vault to save them for some other time. We must use them as they come. And just like we choose how we will spend each dollar, we make the choices of how we will spend the minutes of each day. Days are the “currency” of life and should be used very wisely, for once they are spent, they are spent!
Perhaps some days seem more productive to us than others. Though today is my day off, I still must be mindful of using it wisely. This morning began with my usual daily Bible reading and a little breakfast before going out on a 15.6 mile walk. And that walking time was utilized for meditation and the formulating of today’s focus as I spoke the thoughts into my pocket recorder. Once today’s focus is sent out I will spend some time practicing music for our community orchestra rehearsal this evening. Then I will be making a hospital visit and perhaps spend some time tidying things up around the house before my wife gets home.
Each NEW DAY is a gift from God. (Psalm 118:24) And as we rejoice and gladly put the time to use, we ought to do so wisely and to the glory of the God who gave it.
Paul exhorted…
“(15) Look carefully then how you WALK, not as unwise but AS WISE,
(16) MAKING THE BEST USE OF THE TIME, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians
5:15-16 ESV)
I didn’t slip as I walked on this “crisp” NEW DAY. Such is a worthy aim for our spiritual walk as well. Let us thank God for each NEW DAY He provides, unwrapping the gift and putting it to wise use as He intended.
Have a great day SPENDING IT WITH ETERNAL VALUES IN MIND!

Love Is In The Air!
Today is celebrated as Valentine’s Day as many cards, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between sweethearts expressing their affection for each other. I remembered the love of my life (now in our 31st year of marriage) with a card and a couple small gifts set out for her to find when she got her coffee this morning. Yes, I’m still glad I found mine (or that she found me)!
There is an old country song which referred to “looking for love in all the wrong places.” That is something many in this world continue to do. However, there are also those looking for love for all the wrong reasons! When Paul listed the characteristics of true love, among the qualities he mentioned was that love “does not insist on its own way”. (1 Corinthians 13:5 ESV) Other translations render the expression as “not self-seeking”
(NIV) and “does not seek its own” (NKJV), thus pointing away from love being self-centered to being OTHER-CENTERED. Certainly there are personal benefits we receive in a loving relationship, but selfishness is one of the wrong reasons to love. Self-centered love is all about getting rather than giving which detracts from meeting the needs within relationships.
WHY DO WE LOVE? Perhaps the best way to be sure our love is properly motivated is to first focus on where love, in its truest sense, began.
John, referring to God, noted…
“WE LOVE BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US.” (1 John 4:19 ESV)
Love began in the mind of God and because we are loved we ought to love.
And in accordance with the fact we were loved in spite of our imperfection (i.e. Romans 5:9) we should be humble and merciful enough to love the same way.
Paul exhorted the church at Ephesus…
“(1) Therefore be IMITATORS OF GOD, as beloved children. (2) And WALK IN LOVE, AS CHRIST LOVED US and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV)
The way we are with others (within our families, the church, and our interaction with others in general) can help bring to light what true love is all about. May there be an air of godly love accompanying our every action and word. By so doing we will reveal to God our acknowledgement of His love for us and our great appreciation for it.
Have a great day WALKING IN LOVE!

Peace!
The statement has been made: “If you want to be miserable, look within; distracted, look around; peaceful, look up.” [source: “sentence sermons”]
Looking within we may readily see what is not right in our heart. And if it were not for our knowledge of the power of the blood of Jesus and God’s amazing grace, we might feel a sense of hopelessness. Paul knew the struggles that went on within himself, but He praised God for the deliverance he had in Christ. (Romans 7:24-25) Peace is not something we can attain solely by our own effort.
Looking around us we can easily become distracted by all the chaos, evil and ungodliness that goes on in the world. Like Peter, we may focus our attention on the wind and the waves and, taking our eyes off Jesus, find ourselves sinking. (Matthew 14:30) Possessing a sense of peace is not necessarily obtained through the elimination of unrest around us.
The real key to obtaining peace is by keeping the LIFE FOCUSED ON AND IN CHRIST. As the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) He is the One Who can provide that which is true and lasting peace. He is the One Who again and again told His disciples not to be afraid. (i.e. Matthew 14:27) As Jesus would soon be led away to be crucified, He tried to prepare His disciples for the inner turmoil they would experience as they would witness the unsettling scenes of His arrest, the trial, humiliating treatment, and death on the cross.
When it comes to gaining a true sense of peace, Jesus encouraged…
“PEACE I LEAVE with you; MY PEACE I GIVE to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27 ESV)
What Jesus defines and offers as peace is different that defined by worldly terms. The peace He offers is able to bring us a great sense of calm within regardless of what might be going on in the world around us. It is a peace that comes from acknowledging the Lord’s Sovereignty and entrusting our lives entirely to Him. May we continue to keep our eyes fixed on He Who is the author and perfecter of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2) As we keep our life focused on Him, it is HIS PEACE we will be able to experience for now and eternity.
Have a great day FOCUSED HEAVENWARD!

Conscience!
We have a daughter-in-law who knows full well there is more to owning a horse than having fun riding. Much effort and many hours must be directed toward a horse. There is conditioning, regular brushing and grooming, feeding, cleaning up after, medical attention, exercising, etc. etc. etc. However, as much as a horse may enjoy and be soothed by a good brushing, it has been pointed out that a galled horse cannot endure the comb. Gall is a sore on the skin that may be caused by friction, and for such an area to be groomed would be intolerable for the animal.
Our conscience can either soothe us or make us unbearably uncomfortable. Sometimes the conscience accuses while other times it excuses or defends us. (Romans 2:15) When our conscience knows we are not right, even involvement in good things can cause us painful discomfort. We might read a passage of Scripture which should encourage and soothe us, but we realize something is not right in our life and we feel the TWINGE. We may involve ourselves in singing praises with others, but the words feel awkward because we know our words or actions have not been consistently praiseworthy.
Don’t regret or reject a good conscience. Such pangs are a good sign. They indicate we have a conscience that has been properly trained and a heart that remains touchable. There are individuals who have become plagued with a conscience which can no longer be touched. (1 Timothy 4:2) Paul also referred to some who had rejected faith and a good conscience and thus shipwrecked their faith. (1 Timothy 1:19) There is no reason for our conscience to work against us. The God trained conscience is intended to work for our benefit. And we are blessed when we allow it to do so.
The Hebrew writer requested…
“Pray for us, for we are sure that we have A CLEAR CONSCIENCE, DESIRING TO ACT HONORABLY IN ALL THINGS.” (Hebrews 13:18 ESV)
Do we share the desire to act honorably in all things? When we feel the TWINGE, let us consult God’s Word and respond accordingly. In this way our conscience will be the blessing God intended it to be.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE GODLY TRAINED VOICE WITHIN!

Courageously Encouraged!
The word “courage” comes from the Middle English “corage” and French “cuer” for heart or the Latin “cor” which refers to “more at heart”.
“Encourage” has the same root pointing to the idea of “heartening.” We know that someone who is courageous has a STRONG HEART to press on in the face of seeming insurmountable odds. To be “encouraged” is to have such a HEART instilled.
It has been said, “You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.” [source: bulletin one-liners]
Solomon stated…
“If you faint in the day of adversity, YOUR STRENGTH IS SMALL.”
(Proverbs 24:10 ESV)
There are situations in this life that seem able to take the HEART right out of some. And I know MY STRENGTH is not always what I need it to be.
Nevertheless I am encouraged that there is strength beyond myself on which I can depend. When facing adversity, the thing I must be mindful of doing is not focusing on how big (or small) I am, but on how big my God is.
Have you ever wondered how Paul could be so courageous in the face of great opposition? He had a marvelous way of being able to see the strength of God working through His weakness. (note 2 Corinthians 12:9-10) And His focus seemed to rest on God’s power rather than his own. Where does our focus rest?
How big a HEART we have for pressing on in faith has a lot to do with how much it is focused on God and filled with the things associated with His Will! If our HEART is full of ourselves or worldly desires we will have difficulty finding the strength to press on in the face of adversity.
Let us resolve to develop the faith of Paul who could say…
“I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” (Philippians
4:13 ESV)
Just like a weak HEART will reduce the strength of the physical body, so it is true spiritually. May our HEART be drawn faithfully toward God and His Will. Let it be encouraged by the faithfulness of God to His promises. By so doing, we will be able to maintain a STRONG HEART for faithful service to His glory.
Have a great day HEARTENED FOR PRESSING ON!

Signs!
Signs! They are everywhere. There are stop signs, yield signs, regulatory signs, and warning signs. Some people observe and obey them. Others drive on through or by in indifference. There is a “No Left Turn” sign in our community which I have seen people either not see or decide to ignore. There is also a “Do Not Enter” sign near our high school which I have observed people stop, look at, but proceed through anyway. My assumption is that they apparently think it applies to others, but not to them. As this is sometimes true on our roads, so it is also the reality with regard to life’s spiritual journey.
In Matthew 12 we read of Jesus healing a man with a withered hand. (vss.9-13) Then He restored sight and hearing to a demon possessed man. (vs.22) The fact Jesus had power to do such was not denied. However, rather than acknowledging Jesus’ power as coming from God there was an attempt to align Jesus with Beelzebul (or Beelzebub) the prince of demons. (vs.24) In spite of the proofs presented, the Jewish leaders would ask for more.
We read…
“Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him saying, ‘Teacher, WE WISH TO SEE A SIGN FROM YOU.’” (Matthew 12:38 ESV)
Though they had seen signs their attitude appears to have been, “No, not that one, we want to see another one.” However, would any sign have been enough to convince these hard hearted leaders? Jesus refused to reduce His ministry to a “side show” to entertain the curious. When we look at most of His miracles -- though they were a display of Divine power and a proof of His Messiahship -- we see how they were most often a result of His compassion for the suffering.
Perhaps the sign these leaders needed most was one of those old railroad crossing signs which read “STOP, LOOK, & LISTEN!” They needed to STOP a moment to do some soul-searching about their own attitude and focus and set their own preconceived ideas aside. Then they needed to take another closer LOOK down the “track” of the prophetic record concerning the awaited Messiah and note how much of what Jesus was doing fit the picture. (i.e compare Matthew 11:4-5 and Luke 4:17-21 with Isaiah 29:18-19; 61:1-2) And then they needed to LISTEN more intently to the words Jesus was speaking, recognizing the Divine wisdom and authority behind them.
Jesus went on to mention the only sign THEY would be given; the sign of Jonah (vss.39-40), the same thing He would later state again when asked for a sign. (Matthew 16:1-4) What greater sign could there be than that of our Lord’s resurrection from the dead?
Paul pointed out that such a sign was clear proof of Jesus’ identity.
“AND WAS DECLARED TO BE THE SON OF GOD in power according to the Spirit of holiness BY HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD, JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD,” (Romans 1:4)
Some people, oblivious to signs, end up going the wrong way and their journey will bring them to the wrong conclusion. If we are not open to what God has revealed through His creation and His Word, what else could possibly convince us? What has been recorded is so that we can believe. (John 20:31) Instead of looking for other things we need to accept what God has revealed. Each time we read through the pages of Scripture, let us STOP, LOOK, & LISTEN closely so that our life will remain on the right “track” with the Will of God.
Have a great day ACCEPTING GOD’S REVELATION OF THE SON!

Making It Happen!
It is much easier to go the way of least resistance. However, where will such flow take us? Is that uncertainty a risk we are willing to take in life? A number of years ago I heard a statement that went something like this: “There are two kinds of people in this world; those who watch things happen and those who make things happen!” There are many important things which require DILIGENT action in order to make them happen! This is no truer than when it comes to spiritual development.
In a recent bulletin article dealing with getting back into the habit of daily Bible reading, a preacher noted how routines are like water which follows the course of least resistance and that is why people fall into them. In contrast he then pointed out that disciplined behaviors are like pushing water uphill. Though that may not be easy, it can be done with some definite actions to make it happen. We must bear in mind the development of good habits and godly character does not just happen by itself. Such is learned and increased over time. And it occurs through DILIGENCE and DEVOTION to a plan which has an eternity with God in mind.
Writing to the young evangelist, Timothy, Paul exhorted…
“(12) Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. … (15) PRACTICE THESE THINGS, DEVOTE YOURSELF TO THEM, so that all may see your progress. (16) keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. PERSIST IN THIS, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.” (1 Timothy 4:12 & 15-16 ESV)
The tense of the Greek words translated “practice”, “devote”, and “persist” in these two verses are all in the imperative. It is essential to make a conscious effort to keep from simply being swept along by the flow of other ideas and practices in this world.
After Peter had noted qualities which we are to put forth “EVERY EFFORT” to accompany our faith (2 Peter 1:5-7), he urged…
“Therefore, brothers, BE ALL THE MORE DILIGENT to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” (2 Peter 1:10 ESV)
Again, “diligent” is in the imperative. And did you note that such DILIGENCE can keep us from falling? It is imperative we recognize an eternity is at stake! May we DEVOTE ourselves to the “course” God has laid before us. Certainly there may be times we will feel we are swimming upstream, but onward and upward is the call (Philippians 3:14) to which we are to continue responding. With the help of God, let us daily seek to be of those who make things happen!
Have a great day BEING INHABITED BY GODLY HABITS!

Prayer!
When it comes to prayer, people have varying views of its occasion or purpose. For some prayer is a panic button pressed when God’s immediate attention is needed. Others view it as a means of getting what you want if you say the right words. I have even heard of some who have used demanding terms in prayer. And still others view prayer as a means of blessed conversation with a wondrous Creator Who is already mindful of every aspect of our lives.
It has been stated, “Prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance but laying hold of His willingness.” [original source unknown] Prayer is a gift God has given us to use for the means of petitioning Him as well as praising and thanking Him. However if we view God as a sort of “cosmic Santa Claus” (who gives gifts to those who have been nice, but not those who have been
naughty) or “spiritual genie” (who only grants so many wishes so don’t rub the lamp too often) instead of a loving Father we will most likely find ourselves struggling with approaching prayer properly.
Jesus encouraged…
“(9) Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? (10) Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? (11) If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, HOW MUCH MORE WILL YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN GIVE GOOD THINGS TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM!” (Matthew 7:9-11 ESV)
Where is the sign of reluctance in that? As a perfect loving Father, God is very WILLING to bring that which is MOST BENEFICIAL into our lives. The Greek translated “good things” in verse 11 is a word which describes that which -- being good in its character or constitution -- is BENEFICIAL in its affect. [source: Vine’s Exp. Dict. Of N.T. Words] However, we still are to approach God humbly and reverently.
Though there are many characteristics of God mentioned in Scripture, may we be encouraged by His essence as a perfect loving Father. And as His dear children, let us be eager to converse with Him often in prayer. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) What better way to reveal genuine thanks for His WILLINGNESS to bless than to WILLINGLY submit to the seeking of His guidance and Will!
Have a great day IN CONSTANT TOUCH WITH THE FATHER!

Competing vs. Completing!
A competitive spirit is very common especially among boys and men. Though I don’t have to win all the time, I do like a good contest. Even when I began to lose weight a little over three years ago, though I was not competing against anyone I still felt a sense of competition in desiring to show what I could do if I set my mind to it. I do, however, need to acknowledge I received much encouragement from others along the way.
One thing which much be considered with regard to a competitive spirit is the IMPACT it can have ON RELATIONSHIPS. In marriage a competitive spirit generally does not work. The lives of husband and wife are to complement and complete each other. When this is not the case it becomes extremely difficult (if not impossible) to achieve the ONENESS that is to be a mark of the relationship. A competitive spirit often tends to drive couples apart where complementing one another brings balance to the relationship and tends to draw the two closer together. The same is true within the family of God.
Prior to Jesus’ death, He prayed regarding ONENESS among His followers.
“(20) I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, (21) THAT THEY MAY ALL BE ONE, just AS YOU, FATHER, ARE IN ME, AND I IN YOU, THAT THEY ALSO MAY BE IN US, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:20-21 ESV)
One of the challenges Paul tried to correct within the church at Corinth was how some viewed their particular gift as more important than others. This caused division and a lack of love and support within the church. The focus needed to be turned toward working together for the “common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7) To get his point across, Paul used the analogy of a body. Though the body is made up of many parts it is still ONE BODY. (1 Corinthians 12:20) The same is true with us as Christians in the Body of Christ. We are individual members of it (1 Corinthians 12:27), but are to be a united body under the authority and direction of Christ Who is its Head. (Ephesians 1:22-23; 5:23)
Our individual lives are not complete without Christ. Since we are a part of His Body (the church) our lives are also not complete without each other. As we focus on being a part of the Body of Christ let us keep in mind the difference between competing and completing and the IMPACT either can have ON RELATIONSHIPS. Our manner of conduct should be marked with interaction that draws us together and builds one another up. May we commit to remaining under our Lord’s Headship so that this will be possible.
Have a great day CONSIDERING THE COMMON GOOD UNDER CHRIST!

Durable!
The choice of materials with which something is made (in accordance with how it will be used) determines its durability. The statement has been made that religion is the worst cloak, but the best ARMOR one can have. A cloak may cover and provide some warmth and protection from the elements, but when things get really tough what is lacking is revealed. It is ARMOR which provides true protection against the strongest forces.
To consider the concept of “cloaking” being that of covering, hiding, or masking; when such is the essence of one’s religion we may be referring to hypocrisy. But Paul referred to the spiritual ARMOR God has provided for us as Christians so that we can stand our ground. It is sure protection for the genuine Christian against the real forces that would strike at our Christianity.
Paul exhorted…
“(11) Put on THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (12) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. (13) Therefore take up THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, TO STAND FIRM.” (Ephesians 6:11-13 ESV)
The ARMOR Paul went on to describe is that which covered the front, implying the idea of not retreating, but rather pressing on in the strength of the Lord. We are to put on the “belt of truth”, “the breastplate of righteousness”, have our feet fitted with the readiness of “the gospel of peace”, take up “the shield of faith”, “the helmet of salvation“ and “the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:14-19)
How are we equipped? Is our religion merely a cloak that looks nice and makes us feel warm and cozy or is it the true spiritual ARMOR suitable for standing and remaining firm in the truth of God? May we recognize the essence of true Christianity and accept the ARMOR God has provided in order for us to withstand the forces that would try to defeat us.

Admit It!
Some people are simply not honest enough about their life challenges to be helped by those who try to do so. That has been my experience with some struggling with a problem with alcohol. An alcoholic will tend to tell you what they think you want to hear rather than what really is. Being willing to admit or ACKNOWLEDGE a struggle is often the first step in moving toward victory over it.
The point has been made that “Before God can deliver us from ourselves, we must undeceive ourselves by repentance.” [original source unknown] As we submit to God we must be willing to ACKNOWLEDGE what is out of place in our life. To believe we are just fine in and of ourselves is to lose out on the transformation to godliness God has in mind for us.
John encouraged, but also warned…
“(7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (8) IF WE SAY WE HAVE NO SIN, WE DECEIVE OURSELVES, AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN US. (9) If we CONFESS our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:7-9 ESV)
The blood of Jesus is powerful enough to deal with our sin. However, we must recognize our sin in order to ACKNOWLDEGE it, CONFESS it, and TURN from it. And as we CONFESS our sins to God, John encouraged that He is “faithful and just” to not only forgive, but to cleanse us of the unrighteousness. May we continue to walk in His light so that we may clearly see where we are now and where God wants us to be.
Have a great day OPEN TO GOD’S OBSERVATION OF OUR LIFE!

Isolated vs. Insulated!
Sometimes we might feel it would be nice to just wall ourselves in away from the world. Certainly we would be spared some of the challenges we face living amongst people who don’t always acknowledge God’s standard for living. However, if we isolated ourselves from the world how could we ever expect to influence it in positive ways. Remember, we have been called to be salt and light in this world. (Matthew 5:13-16)
Someone has stated, “One cannot be isolated from sin, but he can become insulated against it.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
Writing to the church at Corinth Paul stated…
“(9) I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people -- (10) not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since THEN YOU WOULD NEED TO GO OUT OF THE WORLD.” (1 Corinthians 5:9-10 ESV)
Paul went on to point to the need to deal with such within the church, but that God would judge those without. (1 Corinthians 5:11-13) While we go about our day to day lives in this world there are all sorts of folk with whom we come into contact. It is unavoidable. Our aim ought to be to influence them toward the truth of God while we GUARD ourselves from being influenced by them.
Remember when Jesus prayed for His disciples, He knew full well the challenges they would face. However, He did not pray that they would be taken out of the world, but that they would be PROTECTED from the evil one. (John 17:15)
Just like there is no keeping the cold weather from coming and therefore pipes and structures are insulated to ward off its affects, so it is with our lives in a world where much may be weathered. Sin is all around us because of those who refuse to acknowledge God and His standard. Nevertheless, we can insulate ourselves from sin’s affects as we look to God for the strengthening and the guidance from the truth He has provided.
Note the encouraging provision mentioned by Peter.
“(3) His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (4) by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, SO THAT THROUGH THEM YOU MAY BECOME PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE, HAVING ESCAPED FROM THE CORRUPTION THAT IS IN THE WORLD BECAUSE OF SINFUL DESIRE.” (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)
Peter then went on to list some keys to insulating our life: faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. (2 Peter 1:5-7) These attributes are key to GUARDING and maintaining our effectiveness and fruitfulness to God’s glory. May we continue to seek to grow in them so that our life will be adequately PROTECTED from the elements of the world.
Have a great day INFLUENCING OTHERS TOWARD GODLINESS!

Messengers!
Yesterday was “Groundhog Day” and according to the “official” groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil (of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania), since he saw his shadow, we are in for six more weeks of cold winter weather. As this annual event was captured by the news media, there was much mumbling and groaning from the crowd gathered and they were reminded that “Phil” was only the messenger. Though we may not fully rely upon the forecast associated with “Groundhog Day”, how often has the weatherman felt the brunt of complaints regarding the weather as people forget the weatherman only predicts the weather, not produces it?
As Stephen was helping to spread the message of salvation in Jesus, there were some who disputed with him, but were unable to withstand his wisdom. In an attempt to stop this messenger, they secretly instigated men to accuse him of blasphemy. Stephen was seized and brought before the Jewish council where false witnesses testified against him. (Acts 6:8-14) Stephen then began a speech pointing out a long history of ill treatment of God’s messengers.
Note the following charge Stephen directed toward this group.
“(51) You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. (52) WHICH OF THE PROPHETS DID NOT YOUR FATHERS PERSECUTE? AND THEY KILLED THOSE WHO ANNOUNCED BEFOREHAND THE COMING OF THE RIGHTEOUS ONE, WHOM YOU HAVE NOW BETRAYED AND MURDERED, (53) you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.” (Acts 7:51-53 ESV)
Jesus also referred to the history of how God’s messengers had been treated. (Matthew 23:29-36) So many of God’s prophets were mistreated as their message was rejected by those to whom God had sent them. However, God’ s true prophets could and would only speak the message He gave them. There were also times when prophets who would speak a kinder message were sought out instead. Is the tendency much different today? Quite often, when people don’t like the message they simply take it out on the messenger. And if the messenger can’t be clearly proven wrong, attempts are made to shut him (or her) up one way or another. Even many who seek to uphold freedom of speech and encourage a spirit of toleration of diverse ideas are among the most intolerant of Biblical principles and appear to want nothing more than for Christians to be silenced!
When the prophet Micaiah was before Ahab and was told to speak favorably, he responded “As the LORD lives, WHAT THE LORD SAYS TO ME, THAT I WILL SPEAK.” (1 Kings 22:14) We are not prophets, but we are to be messengers of GOD’S WORD. What God has spoken and preserved in the Scriptures, that is what we are to proclaim. As we hold out the message of salvation in Christ and live true to the standard God has given us for life, we must always remember the MESSAGE BELONGS TO HIM and we are merely the messengers. We have no right to change the message to suit the ears of those around us. The message is to be what it is regardless of the climate of society. May we remain true to HIS MESSAGE!

Ridiculous Response!
“Come on now!” “Ya, right!” “You expect me to believe that?” “You can do better than that!” “What do you take me for?” Those are reactions to responses which seem unreasonable. Time and again man’s faulty reasoning and wisdom are exposed by statements which are made, and the amazement continues as others accept those explanations anyway.
Consider a moment in Israel’s history.
“(21) And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought such a great sin upon them?” (22) And Aaron said, “Let not the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. (23) For they said to me, ‘Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ (24) So I said to them, ‘Let any who have gold take it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I THREW IT INTO THE FIRE, AND OUT CAME THIS CALF.”” (Exodus 32:21-24 ESV)
Who would buy such a response? Who would accept such an explanation? If we had been Moses would we have looked Aaron in the eye and said, “Give me a break!”? Could it have just happened as Aaron said? Of course not! Aaron had much more to do with it than that! (note Exodus 32:4) What a lame response! Who would possibly accept that as a LOGICAL EXPLANATION?
As Paul stood in the Areopagus at Athens, he stated…
“(24) The GOD WHO MADE THE WORLD AND EVERYTHING IN IT, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, (25) nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since HE HIMSELF GIVES TO ALL MANKIND LIFE AND BREATH AND EVERYTHING. (26) And HE MADE from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, (27) that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, (28) for ‘IN HIM WE LIVE AND MOVE AND HAVE OUR BEING’; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ ” (Acts 17:24-28 ESV)
God created this world and universe and is the author of all life! Nevertheless, there are still many who want to claim it all came about by chance or by some cosmic accident. As ridiculous as Aaron’s explanation that he threw the gold into the fire and out came a calf is the reasoning that all the elements making up this universe were thrown together and by chance out came all the order and complexity and design associated with its existence and ours. It just happened? Of course not! Like Aaron’s, God’s hand was directly involved!
The Hebrew writer stated…
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that HE EXISTS and that HE REWARDS THOSE WHO SEEK HIM.” (Hebrews 11:6 ESV)
The God who created us as reasoning beings continues to be faced with unreasonable behavior and responses to what He has done and the hope He offers. However, as the clear evidence is accepted there will continue to be those who are drawn to seek Him as He has desired. The proofs of creation are such that mankind is left without excuse for not believing. (Romans 1:20) As a part of God’s glorious creation may our life continue to point to the LOGICAL EXPLANATION that He is still behind it all!
Have a great day AS LIVING EVIDENCE OF THE HAND OF GOD!

The Real You!
Have you ever taken a walk in a cemetery? It can be a very interesting place. Reading some of the grave markers we get glimpses of the duration of a life lived and sometimes even a briefly stated reflection of the mark that individual left on others. As we look over the tombstones we may notice some to be quite ornate and well kept while others may be very simple or show the wear of exposure to the elements. While walking through cemeteries where the plots are kept up by the following generations of family members, we may observe some that appear to receive frequent attention while others may be as forgotten as the one who had passed on. Nevertheless, in spite of all the variation of these scenes, what is below the surface is pretty much the same.
Someone has stated… “Reputation is seeming; character is being.” [source: list of “sentence sermons”] Having a good reputation is a noble aim. However, the reputation on the surface may not truly reflect the TRUE ESSENCE WITHIN. It is not enough to aim to seem. We must seriously consider WHAT WE BE!
Perhaps you are wondering why this focus began with a consideration of cemeteries. Remember Jesus’ rebuke directed at some of the leaders of that day.
“(27) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are LIKE WHITEWASHED TOMBS, which outwardly appear beautiful, BUT WITHIN ARE FULL OF DEAD PEOPLE’S BONES AND ALL UNCLEANNESS. (28) So you also outwardly APPEAR RIGHTEOUS to others, but WITHIN YOU ARE FULL OF HYPOCRISY AND LAWLESSNESS.” (Matthew 23:27-28 ESV)
These -- sometimes referred to as experts in the law (Luke 7:30) -- had become experts at putting on a show. They loved the praise of men. (John 12:43) They loved to be greeted with respect. (Matthew 23:7) They loved the place of honor at banquets and in the synagogues. (Matthew 23:6) However, Jesus could clearly see the corruption and decay that lay below the surface.
What is the TRUE ESSENCE of our life? Are we continuing to earnestly seek the praise of God? Are we willing to humble ourselves before God, letting Him be the One to do the exalting? Is there a godly beauty on the surface of OUR BEING that goes all the way to the bone? We might be able to fool others for a while, but eventually the TRUE ESSENCE will show through. May we continue to grow spiritually in a way that when others begin to dig deeper below the surface they will see that we truly are sincere Christians through and through.
Have a great day DEVELOPING A DEEPER GODLY SENSE OF BEING!
