The One We Have!
We are probably all familiar with the expression “A bird in the hand in worth two in the bush.” Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “One today is worth two tomorrows.” The point of both of these statements is that what is IN HAND is the only sure thing. The two birds in the bush may never be caught and the two tomorrows may never come.
The Psalmist stated…
“THIS IS THE DAY that the LORD has made; Let us REJOICE and BE GLAD IN IT.” ( Psalm 118:24 ESV)
Today is the day we have IN HAND to deal with and work through. It is God’s gift for us to unwrap and put to use for the purpose for which it has been given. It is the only day presently under our control.
The Hebrew writer warned…
“(12) Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But exhort one another every day, AS LONG AS IT IS CALLED ‘TODAY,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” ( Hebrews 3:12-13 ESV)
Today is the day to encourage and exhort and to accept the same from our brothers and sisters in God’s family. We must not become so relaxed about life that we let our guard down against the deceitfulness of sin.
Paul urged…
“(1) Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. (2) For he says, ‘In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, NOW IS THE FAVORABLE TIME; behold, NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.” ( 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 ESV)
There are many things which are unwise to put off. Today we have opportunities IN HAND which tomorrow may be lost. Just like birds suddenly fluttering out of a bush and quickly getting out of reach, so it is with many opportunities which are allowed to slip away from our grasp. And when it comes to the salvation of our souls, we are worth more than many sparrows. ( Matthew 10:31)
It is easier to handle one bird IN THE HAND than two. It is also easier to handle one day at a time. That is why, in God’s great wisdom, He has chosen to give us life in daily doses. May we use wisely the day God has presently placed IN OUR HANDS.
Have a great day TODAY!
