The True Benefit!

It is not enough to simply possess things. We must also have a proper understanding of their appropriate use. Someone has pointed out that “The use of money is all the advantage there is in having it.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] As Christians such a focus should be of great significance. Since we belong to God, whatever we possess belongs to Him as well, and we are to be GOOD STEWARDS of those things. Whether it be money, other possessions, or abilities, do we acknowledge the true benefit of everyone of these is in their being used? If they are not used we might as well not even possess them!

When Jesus told the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) the focus was not centered so much on how much was gained as it was on what was put to use. Each was given according to their ability. One, however, did not live up to his ability. As we use our possessions and talents to the glory of God, we may not always know the extent of the return for our labors. The important thing is for us to just put them to use for godly purposes.

Peter encouraged…
“(10) As each has received a gift, USE IT TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER, AS GOOD STEWARDS OF GOD’S VARIED GRACE: (11) whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies -- in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11 ESV)

God does not expect any more from us that that which we possess. (2 Corinthians 8:12) What we must be mindful of is the putting to use of that which has been entrusted to us. May we strive to be the GOOD STEWARDS God will be pleased with that we too may someday hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant … enter into the joy of your Master.” (Matthew
25:21 & 23 ESV)

Have a great day AS A USER TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

Adding An "S"!

Resistance and retaliation seem to be common reactions among mankind. Certainly we desire to be treated well and may not appreciate it when we feel others are trying to take advantage of us. However, even when others may not act properly toward us we are still encouraged to exercise a spirit of Christian love. Love appears to always be a right response. As Jesus was teaching against retaliation, one of the principles He shared (in what Matthew recorded as the “Sermon on the Mount”) was that of going the second mile.

Jesus stated…
“And if anyone forces you to go one MILE, go with him two MILES.” (Matthew 5:41 ESV)

From this passage has come the principle of “going the extra MILE”; the act of being willing to do more than what was asked of us or going beyond the call of duty. Do you see how an “S” added to MILE puts our action where Jesus encouraged it? Nevertheless, is it still possible that we could go the extra MILE or MILES and yet do so without the spirit that would truly glorify God? We could go the two MILES and do it grudgingly with an attitude of getting it over with and satisfying our “duty”. Since it is very possible to carry out the actions without being happy about it, perhaps what we need to do is add the “S” to the beginning of MILE rather than at the end.

Paul exhorted…
“(14) DO ALL THINGS WITHOUT GRUMBLING OR QUESTIONING, (15) that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you SHINE AS LIGHTS IN THE WORLD,” (Philippians 2:14-15 ESV)

Let us put some cheer into our actions. Putting a shining SMILE in our service will not only have an impact on those we serve, but on our own disposition as well. Great joyfulness can be ours when all we do is done for the purpose of God’s glory and praise.

It is service with a SMILE that most clearly reflects the true servant’s heart? As children and servants of God, may that be the kind of spirit exhibited in the actions of our daily lives that He might be glorified.

Have a great day GOING THE EXTRA SMILE!

Don't Quit!

A mother came home from shopping one day and was greeted at the door by one of her children who was bearing a huge smile on his face. “What have you been up to?” she asked suspiciously. “I’ve been helping you today,” came his proud response. Almost afraid to find out she then asked, “What did you do?” “I licked all your stamps for you.”

Some envelopes are marked with the clear reminder: “Without the proper postage, the Post Office will return your mail.” The thing about a postage stamp is that its usefulness consists in its ability to STICK TO ONE THING UNTIL IT GETS THERE! And such should be our focus for pressing on in life.

Jesus warned…
“(12) And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. (13) BUT THE ONE WHO ENDURES TO THE END WILL BE SAVED.” (Matthew 24:12-13 ESV)

Enduring is important. Regardless of how long we might hold on, if we don’t STICK WITH IT to the end, it is all for not! Remember how Paul focused on the “ONE THING” of forgetting what was behind and straining toward what was to come. (Philippians 3:13) We must keep our faith in God and our love for His Will alive as we press on, knowing that whatever we endure will be nothing compared to the glory that is to come. (2 Corinthians 4:17)

Like the stamp, when it comes to our hope for eternity, our usefulness to ourselves, to others, and to God’s glory will come through our steadfastness in STICKING TO THE ONE THING UNTIL WE GET THERE! May we continue to encourage each other on!

Have a great day STICKING WITH GOD FOR ETERNITY!

Blessed Inclusion!

As Abraham, in obedient faith, left his home to follow where God would lead, the promise was made that through his seed all nations of the earth would be blessed. (Genesis 12:2-4; 15:5) That covenant promise was repeated to Abraham’s son Isaac (Genesis 26:4) and then to Isaac’s son Jacob (Genesis 28:13-14) revealing the unchanging intent of God.

As the history of God’s people and His blessing upon those who would obediently acknowledge Him would unfold, God even revealed to Abraham Israel ’s 400 years of affliction in Egypt. (Genesis 15:13) However, God also made it clear that He would lead the people out to the promised land and as we read of the Exodus from Egypt we see God gloriously providing for His people Israel.

When the nation came to Mount Sinai we read…
“(5) Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be MY TREASURED POSSESSION among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; (6) and you shall be to me A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS and A HOLY NATION. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” (Exodus 19:5-6 ESV)

This is what Moses was to tell the people. What a special relationship God desired to have with His people! What a blessed status He would provide for them! What a marvelous essence was to characterize their lives. But such is also the blessed state in which He has placed us in Christ.

Note the similar words stated by Peter.
“But you are A CHOSEN RACE, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a HOLY NATION, a people for HIS OWN POSSESSION, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)

Thus we should clearly see the broad extent of the promise God had made to Abraham. What a blessing we possess through the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham through Christ! In Christ we have become heirs of that promise (Galatians 3:29) and therefore viewed by God as a CHOSEN, PRIESTLY, and HOLY people. May such character truly be exhibited in our daily lives.

Have a great day LIVING TO REVEAL THE EXCELLENCIES OF GOD!

Covered!

One thing I don’t understand about clothing is how that which appears to have been made with less cloth can cost more than that which covers more of the body. I have seen shirts which appeared so short I have been tempted to ask the individual if perhaps they could not afford the whole shirt. Modesty in clothing is something which should be given serious consideration. However, there is also a principle here we ought to bear in mind relating to the religion we profess. The statement has been made, “Some people will make a cloak out of a very small piece of religion.” [source: list of sentence sermons]

Some have embraced religion which has to be pulled at and shifted from time to time in order to cover whatever aspects of life need covering at the time. Others wear a religion that is so tight they can hardly move. Then there are those whose religion is merely a cloak used to cover themselves when around certain people, but is left in the closet when around others. How clothed are we?

Paul exhorted…
“But PUT ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (Romans 13:14 ESV)

The Greek here signifies “to enter into, get into, as into clothes, to put on.” [Vine’s Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words] Strong’s Lexicon refers to the word in the sense of sinking into a garment. If we think of sinking into comfortable clothing (as we do for various tasks) we should recognize the comfort of always living FULLY CLOTHED IN CHRIST.

We were CLOTHED WITH CHRIST when we put Him on in baptism. (Galatians 3:27) And we will be suitably covered for all the tasks of life as long as we remain fully CLOTHED IN HIM. Without Him we are underdressed for any of life’s activities. May Christ and His essence remain our daily attire.

Have a great day CLOTHED FROM GOD’S WARDROBE!

Regaining Our Footing!

A number of years ago, very soon after arriving at a lake not far from where we live, my attention was caught by a group of people getting into a canoe. As they launched out into the lake I also noticed a young child standing in the water at one end of the canoe who appeared to be associated with the group. However, those in the canoe seemed oblivious to his presence there. As the canoe was departing, the child reached forward to give it a shove, but in the process of doing so he stepped out further into the lake. Finding himself in OVER HIS HEAD, he pushed off from the bottom only to launch himself out further. And each subsequent bob took him yet farther away from the shore. Seeing he was obviously unable to swim I quickly jumped in and helped him out of the water.

Perhaps some of us have had the experience of losing our footing and going under. The tragedy is when people in life suddenly become aware they are in OVER THEIR HEAD and don’t know where to turn for help. They may try their best to “tread water” or “hold their breath” hoping their situation will soon pass, but by their own efforts are unable to regain their footing. It is also sad when those around them are oblivious to their dilemma.

Note David’s description of his own experience.
“For MY INIQUITIES HAVE GONE OVER MY HEAD; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.” (Psalm 38:4 ESV)

When one gets in OVER THEIR HEAD, weighed down by the burden of sin, how can they possibly keep their head above water? Remember how when Jonah ignored God he found himself in OVER HIS HEAD. David did not minimize his sin nor did he deny the struggle. He recognized his situation and the great need for help. Left to self one is more likely to launch themselves further into deep waters.

David (a couple psalms later) referred to the help He received from God.
“HE DREW ME UP from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and SET MY FEET UPON A ROCK, making my steps secure.” (Psalm 40:2 ESV)

If the dilemma of sin was something we could have handled ourselves, there would have been no need for Christ to have given His life on the cross. It is there that the burden of our sins was adequately dealt with. However, we need to be in Him in order to receive the blessing of the complete cleansing His blood provides. The only way we could ever hope to keep our head above water is to have been buried with Him in the waters of baptism to rise and walk in a new life (Romans 6:1-4), thus becoming a new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17), and being lifted up by Him and placed where we can have a firm footing on which to stand. When Peter began to sink it was the Lord, not the disciples he called upon to save Him. (Matthew 14:30) We also must look to Jesus for our salvation.

Have a great day MAKING JESUS TO BE OUR LIFEGUARD!

Being Ready!

People do a lot of different things to try to cover the bases. It is a good thing to seek to leave no lose ends. However, are all the efforts put forth truly sufficient? Someone has said, “With a birth certificate and a burial policy a fellow is prepared to live or die.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Perhaps that sounds like both ends are covered, but is that necessarily true? There are many people who are dead even while they live. (i.e. 1 Timothy 5:6 & Ephesians 2:1-3) And there are also many who are sadly unprepared for the inevitable which is destined to follow death.

Paul understood how to have both covered. The key was the LINK OF LIFE AND DEATH TO JESUS. If that is not the case we are neither prepared to truly live or to die.

Paul stated…
“(19) For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. (20) It is NO LONGER I WHO LIVE, BUT CHRIST WHO LIVES IN ME. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:19-20
ESV)

And as Paul reflected on the life he had LIVED IN THE LORD, he looked TO JESUS for confidence with regard to the end.
“(6) For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. (7) I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (8) Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, WHICH THE LORD, THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE, WILL AWARD TO ME ON THAT DAY, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:6-8 ESV)

Most everyone gets a birth certificate when they are born and a burial policy can be purchased from any number of sources. However, neither of these truly prepares for that which is beyond this realm. The key is through proper recognition of the true LORDSHIP OF CHRIST! We must recognize that without JESUS we are not prepared to live life now nor to see its end!

Writing to the church at Rome Paul revealed what our focus should be.
“(8) If we live, we LIVE TO THE LORD, and if we die, we DIE TO THE LORD. So then, WHETHER WE LIVE OR WHETHER WE DIE, WE ARE THE LORD’S. (9) For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.” (Romans 14:8-9 ESV)

As Christians, whether we have our life or death in view, we can be encouraged that our RELATIONSHIP TO CHRIST does not end. If we have allowed JESUS to gain such a grip on our life, we can be encouraged that we cannot be snatched from His hand. (note John 10:28-29) May we ever remain His!

Have a great day FULLY REMAINING CHRIST’S POSSESSION!

Our Country!

In our country, with a sense of pride (and even downright arrogance at times), some people state they will do or say certain things simply because this is America and they are Americans. It is true we have great freedom to express ourselves in so many ways (speech, action, art, music, etc.). However, there may be times we observe some of what takes place and wonder, “What were they THINKING?”

Is our intellect rooted in the “freedom” to THINK or in the “substance” of what can be THOUGHT? Just because someone says something is true does not necessarily make it so. That includes Bible teachers. (i.e. Acts 17:11) We are not to check our brain at the door when we enter a church building to hear the teaching and preaching. Though I diligently strive to be true to the message of God, even the “teEn-MAIL” is not to be viewed as the final word on any subject. Praise God He has given us His Word so that we can read it to be certain what we are being taught is true. Still, even as we accept the authority of God’s Word that does not mean we set our brain aside as we begin to read it either. We must always study the Bible with a consideration of the context of what we are reading, consider who is speaking and to whom, and how it relates to or fits with other passages of Scripture. God’s Word may not always agree with us, but it will always agree with itself!

The statement has been made, “I am a fellow citizen of all men who think. Truth; that is my country.” (Alphonse de Lamartine, “Marseillaise de la Paix”, 1841) [source: “A Treasury of Business Quotations”, #1574, p.145, compiled by Michael C. Thomsett © 1990]

Living in the truth is important. Are we constantly mindful of remaining within truth’s borders? Does truth mean enough to us that we will submit to its sovereignty?

Paul exhorted…
“(18) For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. (19) Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. (20) BUT OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (Philippians 3:18-20 ESV)

In the “free-thinking” society in which we live here, many have become enemies of the truth! But what truly is our country? Though we may enjoy the rights of citizenship in the earthly country in which we live, do we live with an acknowledgment of the greater significance of being citizens of Heaven? It is the wisdom from above which we are to gain because that is the wisdom which is “pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17 ESV) Do our THOUGHTS reflect the essence of such wisdom? If so, then we are fellow citizens with the truly greatest of THINKERS!

Have a great day DOING AND SAYING BECAUSE WE ARE CHRISTIANS!

What Should I Do?

At times when we think we are doing well, perhaps we would be wise to look closer at our life. It is far too easy to validate our daily actions as being very holy and get comfortable with where we are. When such is the feeling it is a good time to do some honest soul searching to see what it is we might still lack.

Jesus was approached by one who seemed to have thought his life was going pretty well. However, he did ask Jesus what he needed to do to have eternal life. (Matthew 19:16) As Jesus pointed this young man’s attention toward the commandments, he asked for more specifics.

We read…
“(18) He said to him, ‘WHICH ONES?’ And Jesus said, ‘You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, (19) Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 19:18-19 ESV)

We would all most likely agree that one whose life was marked by obedience to such commands was living a good life. This young man felt he had been following them. Perhaps Jesus’ statement made him feel his life must be on target. Nevertheless, this man’s questioning went a little deep.

Picking up the narration we read…
“(20) The young man said to him, ‘All these I have kept. WHAT DO I STILL LACK?’ (21) Jesus said to him, ‘If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’” (Matthew 19:20-21 ESV)

When I consider the focus Jesus pointed this young man toward, the first statement directed him to consider how he treated others. Such can be done without any real sacrifice. It is very possible to live a “good” life and not be a “law breaker” and yet not be fully pleasing to God. The second statement directed attention toward a deeper level of sacrifice and a willingness to meet the needs of others. The sad note on which this encounter ended is that this young man was not yet willing to give up his possessions.

Had we encountered Jesus, what would He have noted was still lacking in our life? Though we may be growing spiritually, bit by bit and level by level, what is it that we are still reluctant to release in order to MORE FULLY follow Jesus? I dare say that once we recognize what that is and begin to get it right, God will graciously reveal to us the next thing we need to work on. And such is the continual process of growing more and more into the likeness of Christ that God desires us to share. May we continually be open to learning that which will help us become BETTER SERVANTS of God.

Have a great day CONTINUING DEEPER INTO THE CHARACTER OF CHRIST!

The Important Stuff!

There is so much to do with our schedules filled with lots of important stuff. But in the midst of it all, what we are flexible enough to make time for says something about our true character.

Matthew recorded the following scene during Jesus’ earthly walk.
“(13) Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. THE DISCIPLES REBUKED THE PEOPLE, (14) but Jesus said, ‘LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME TO ME AND DO NOT HINDER THEM, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.’” (Matthew 19:13-14 ESV)

Perhaps the disciples thought the Lord had more important things to do than spend time with “the little children.” Jesus was about important things, but all generations were important. It is obvious from the scene here that even time with “the little children” was time well spent. Reading through the Gospels we see Jesus CONNECTING with people from all levels of society and of all ages. CONNECTING with people -- touching their lives by His action and teaching -- was what Jesus’ ministry was all about. As His followers do we share the same aim in life?

Last December, when we had the service for celebrating the life of my father, one of the things which touched me deeply was the number of young children who came up to me and told me how much they loved my father. There were also teens who had known my dad who expressed the same thing either in person and by e-mails sent to me. He was most definitely a people person, being able to interact with those of all age groups and be accepted by them. He even seemed to be able to get along with difficult people. I can remember (while growing up) when some tasks or travels took a little longer because he took time to talk to others or assist them with something.

If you are an older child, consider the positive impact you can have on your younger siblings. What you do, others watch. And children are easily influenced by what they see. We must guard against being guilty of causing any of these to stumble. (Matthew 18:5-6) The reality is that we are all going to be examples of something and someone is bound to follow our example. We should therefore always strive to be a holy example and an uplifter of others. Time spent with siblings for this reason is time well spent!

As adults we need to be very mindful of our example as well. Many of the attitudes children develop are because of what they observe in the lives of adults. How can parents teach their children about honesty if they observe their parents lying about a child’s age just to get a discount somewhere or if they become aware of dishonesty with information used when filing income taxes? One of the best ways for children to learn to own up to their mistakes is to see their parents also admit when they have been wrong. There are so many little things in day to day living that teach children very important and powerful lessons.

The example we set is always important to keep in mind. And an awareness of the importance of CONNECTING with others (regardless of age) is essential. May we live a life that CONNECTS with others in ways that reveal all people are important to us and to our God. Such will be indicative of a life well spent.

Have a great day ALLOWING TIME TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS!

The One We Have!

We are probably all familiar with the expression “A bird in the hand in worth two in the bush.” Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “One today is worth two tomorrows.” The point of both of these statements is that what is IN HAND is the only sure thing. The two birds in the bush may never be caught and the two tomorrows may never come.

The Psalmist stated…
“THIS IS THE DAY that the LORD has made; Let us REJOICE and BE GLAD IN IT.” (Psalm 118:24 ESV)

Today is the day we have IN HAND to deal with and work through. It is God’s gift for us to unwrap and put to use for the purpose for which it has been given. It is the only day presently under our control.

The Hebrew writer warned…
“(12) Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But exhort one another every day, AS LONG AS IT IS CALLED ‘TODAY,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:12-13 ESV)

Today is the day to encourage and exhort and to accept the same from our brothers and sisters in God’s family. We must not become so relaxed about life that we let our guard down against the deceitfulness of sin.

Paul urged…
“(1) Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. (2) For he says, ‘In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, NOW IS THE FAVORABLE TIME; behold, NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.” (2 Corinthians 6:1-2 ESV)

There are many things which are unwise to put off. Today we have opportunities IN HAND which tomorrow may be lost. Just like birds suddenly fluttering out of a bush and quickly getting out of reach, so it is with many opportunities which are allowed to slip away from our grasp. And when it comes to the salvation of our souls, we are worth more than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:31)

It is easier to handle one bird IN THE HAND than two. It is also easier to handle one day at a time. That is why, in God’s great wisdom, He has chosen to give us life in daily doses. May we use wisely the day God has presently placed IN OUR HANDS.

Have a great day TODAY!

Bears Repeating!

“If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times.” Perhaps we have experienced a parent directing those words toward us. I must admit I made similar statements to our own children as they were growing up. It is a statement indicative of a sense of frustration in having to remind and remind and remind again. However, a problem with some things being repeated again and again is that they end up being tuned out. Nevertheless there is that which we should never tire of repeating or hearing and that is the expression of genuine LOVE.

Following each thought in Psalm 136 (a psalm which appears to have been set up as a responsive reading) is the recurring phrase “for HIS STEADFAST LOVE ENDURES FOREVER.” (ESV) Twenty-six times in this one psalm this statement regarding God’s LOVE is made. It bears repeating and the truth regarding God’s LOVE does not diminish with the repetition. The thing which should take place is for our awareness of it to continue to grow.

It is possible to say “I LOVE you” and then act in ways that convey the opposite to be true. God has stated His LOVE for us in no uncertain terms. He has also clearly displayed the genuineness of His LOVE innumerable times and by various means. (i.e. Romans 5:8) Though we may say we LOVE God and say it often, what does our life actually declare? I know my wife would not be pleased if I had said “I LOVE you” when we got married and never told her again. She would also have difficulty believing me if I said the words but acted contrary to them. Could we honestly expect it to be any different with God?

When Jesus was asked regarding the greatest commandment, He replied…
“And you shall LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD with ALL YOUR HEART and with ALL YOUR SOUL and with ALL YOUR MIND and with ALL YOUR STRENGTH.” (Mark 12:30 ESV)

Our whole life is laid bare before God. He sees beyond the words to the heart. Do we truly have a whole-hearted devoted LOVE for God? Is our soul completely drawn to the One Who holds eternity in His hands? Do the things we dwell on in our mind declare our genuine LOVE for God and His Will? And do we use our strength eagerly and energetically out of LOVE for His cause? What is it that our entire being continues to repeat again and again regarding LOVE for God as we go about our daily activities?

The genuineness of our LOVE for God bears repeating day after day and by our entire being. May our heart, soul, mind, and strength reveal it to be so. God longs to hear it again and again from our lips and in the daily actions of our life.

Have a great day CONSISTENTLY REVEALING A HEART TOWARD GOD!

Frequency!

We make choices in life and sometimes find ourselves having to face the music. However, all the music is not bad. Even music a varying moods can play its own particular role in helping us press on. The statement has been made, “There is plenty of heavenly music for those who are tuned in.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Are we TUNED IN? How often? As these two questions indicate, there are perhaps two ways in which we should consider our “frequency.” Two definitions (taken from Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 2002. © 1993-2001 Microsoft Corporation) for the word “frequency” are: [1] “the fact of happening often or regularly at short intervals” and [2] “a wavelength on which a radio or television signal is broadcast and to which a receiving set can be tuned.”

First of all we need to be sure we are TUNED IN to the right “frequency” if we are going to find the right music or message for life. But the “frequency” of which we TUNE IN is also of paramount importance. As we consider the ease of pushing the buttons (or clicking the remote) for our radio or television, we should consider the ease of picking up our Bibles and reading through the pages. We should also give serious thought to which of these we are TUNED IN to the most? Whatever it is will have the greatest influence in our life.

Note some folk Paul and Silas encountered.
“(10) The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. (11) Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they RECEIVED THE WORD WITH ALL EAGERNESS, EXAMINING THE SCRIPTURES DAILY to see if these things were so.” (Acts 17:10-11 ESV)

The Bereans had good “reception” when it came to the Word of God. They eagerly received it. They were also TUNED IN to the Scriptures on a daily basis in order to be certain they were continuing to receive the truth. Keeping TUNED IN was a safeguard against being led astray by that which might have sounded good, but was not true.

In the Psalms we read…
“How can a young man keep his way pure? BY GUARDING IT ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD.” (Psalm 119:9 ESV)

May we each be certain to remain TUNED IN to the right “frequency” and to do so with “frequency”. It is the way to ensure we are listening to the music of Heaven now and will be able to for eternity.

Have a great day LIVING LIFE TUNED TO GOD!

The Way of Brothers!

It seems like it is the way of brothers to quarrel. I know my two brothers and I had our moments while growing up. There was even one time my younger brother and I were going at it to the point our older brother ran out of the house to let our mother know because he thought we were going to kill each other. Squabbles happen. However, all of that is far behind us and the relationship the three of us have shared for many years is very good.

It is sad what often happens between brothers (and sisters). Cain got mad and killed his brother Abel. And jealousy within families can cause great problems. It did in Jacob’s family. Joseph’s brothers resented the special treatment he seemed to have received. (Genesis 37:4) And when Joseph had his dreams it caused his brothers to despise him even more. (Genesis 37:8 & 11) Eventually Joseph’s brothers decided to get rid of him (though not all agreed -- Genesis 37:21-22), but his life was spared when he was sold to a caravan heading toward Egypt. Knowing the rest of the story we understand this was all a part of God’s plan (and in accordance with Joseph’ s dreams) for the eventual sparing of Jacob and his entire household during a great famine that eventually came.

When the famine began, Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain. But when Joseph began to question his brothers (they not knowing it was him) and the request was made for them to bring Benjamin back with them, out came the quarreling finger with an “I told you so” along with a “but noooo, you would not listen” from Reuben. (Genesis 42:22) Sounds like brothers, doesn’t it?

Eventually the brothers returned to get more grain, taking Benjamin along with them, and it was on this visit Joseph revealed himself to them. With a plan in place to have the entire household of Jacob come to Egypt, Joseph sent them off with the following admonishment.

We read…
“Then he sent his brothers away, and as they departed, he said to them, ‘DO NOT QUARREL ON THE WAY.’” (Genesis 45:24 ESV)

It was time to END THE QUARRELING AND MOVE ON. The blame of the past did not need to be placed, rather rejoicing in the present situation was what needed to be done. The past could not be erased anyway.

How sad it is when brothers and sisters (relationships within the family of God included) quarrel through the years. Sometimes that quarreling is due to an unwillingness to leave the past in the past. Other times it is simply caused by a spirit of envy or selfishness.

Paul complimented the church at Thessalonica with these words…
“Now concerning BROTHERLY LOVE you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves HAVE BEEN TAUGHT BY GOD TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER,” (1 Thessalonians 4:9 ESV)

If there is anything we should learn from God it is what love is all about! Are we learning? Does it show in our relationships within our families and within the church? Paul went on to encourage these brethren to continue to do so more and more. Our goal also ought to be to “LET BROTHERLY LOVE CONTINUE.” (Hebrews 13:1 ESV) If we allow love to be genuine we will be able to squelch the quarreling that might otherwise exist. May brotherly love abound!

Have a great day MAINTAINING TRUE LOVE IN THE FAMILY!

Remind Me Again!

As Paul wrote his letters he admonished, exhorted, and encouraged his readers. And though we find his statements to be very bold at times, a great sense of loving patience is also very evident. In this regard he was a good teacher and servant of God. Paul had a genuine interest in the spiritual welfare of others.

Writing to the church at Philippi Paul stated…
“Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write THE SAME THINGS to you is NO TROUBLE TO ME and IS SAFE FOR YOU.” (Philippians 3:1 ESV)

It didn’t bother Paul to repeat what was necessary for keeping others safe. This is understood in factories or on job sites and other places where safety is crucial, with safety procedures being reviewed over and over again on a regular basis to make sure that which is important is kept fresh in the mind. Reminders are good teachers and ensure our safety. Certainly there is a difference between nagging and reminding, but reminders are always beneficial for keeping us on track. And this is of inestimable value with regard to the salvation of our souls.

Peter made a similar statement when he wrote…
“(12) Therefore I INTEND ALWAYS TO REMIND YOU OF THESE QUALITIES, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. (13) I THINK IT RIGHT, as long as I am in this body, TO STIR YOU UP BY WAY OF REMINDER,” (2 Peter 1:12-13 ESV)

Do you like adding chocolate syrup to milk? If the milk is allowed to sit for a while, the chocolate begins to sink to the bottom and isn’t quite as good. Though the chocolate is present, there is the need to STIR IT UP, making a change in the look and the taste of what is in the glass.

Perhaps we could think of our lives in a similar way. We have the knowledge of many godly principles, but too easily we get settled into routines and comfortable about life and there is the need to get those principles STIRRED UP so as to affect the way we look and help bring a rich godly flavor to our lives. This should happen as we worship. Through the hymns we sing we are reminded of the rich blessings that are ours and where our focus ought to be. We should be STIRRED to remembrance when we are involved in Bible study (both private and public) and when we hear the preaching of the Word.

Let us remain open to reminders. It is good to be reminded. There is great value in being reminded of that which should remain fresh in our minds. Even at times when we might feel we don’t need them we can appreciate their purpose of keeping our lives on track and safe. Having the reminders STIRRED UP will help in continuing to stir us into action to God’s glory and praise.

Have a great day WILLING TO LISTEN AGAIN!

Humility Before God!

As Jacob had tended Laban’s flocks for twenty years, he was faithful to the charge given him. When one of the flock was lost or taken by wild animals, Jacob replaced it with that which was of his own. He had served with integrity even though Laban had continually changed Jacob’s wages. (note Genesis 31:38-41) Jacob had served with all his strength. (Genesis
31:6) He had been completely trustworthy. He had been a good man. It would seem he deserved better treatment than he had received from the kinsman of his mother in Paddan-aram. However, as Jacob was returning to meet Esau, we find humble words lifted from his lips to God.

We read…
“(9) And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’ (10) I AM NOT WORTHY OF THE LEAST OF ALL THE DEEDS OF STEADFAST LOVE AND ALL THE FAITHFULNESS THAT YOU HAVE SHOWN TO YOUR SERVANT, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.” (Genesis 32:9-10 ESV)

Jacob went on to ask for God’s protection as he headed back to meet his brother Esau. A lesser man might have boasted of his integrity, but Jacob’s words indicated a view that he himself merited nothing. He did not see his own goodness or uprightness in a sense that God owed him anything Nor did he state the injustice he had suffered from Laban as reason for deserving better now. Jacob humbly acknowledged the GRACIOUSNESS OF GOD and his own unworthiness of even the least of all God’s loving actions toward him.

As we diligently seek to do the Will of God, we should guard against developing an attitude that God owes us because we have tried to be so good. There is no amount of goodness we can do to merit the GRACIOUS GIFTS OF GOD. We should seek to faithfully serve Him simply because we love Him and know His Ways are righteous. It is because God is altogether righteous and loves that He blesses us as He does. May we strive to live to please Him while we very humbly accept and thank Him for all HIS GRACIOUS blessings.

Have a great day LIVING HUMBLY BEFORE GOD!

Apologize?

There are some things we may have been sorry we said either because they were not true or the words we said were simply not nice (perhaps leaving our lips before our brain was in gear). Even when something is true we might be sorry for the way in which we said it. And though we ought to speak the TRUTH in love (Ephesians 4:15) there is a quality of TRUTH itself that remains the same. The statement has been made, “Truth is stubborn. It doesn’ t apologize to anybody.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Toward the end of Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth, he wrote…
“For we cannot do anything against the TRUTH, but ONLY FOR THE TRUTH.” (2 Corinthians 13:8 ESV)

Though we may not be perfect regarding our choice of words, when it comes to the TRUTH do we feel a need to apologize for it? TRUTH is TRUTH. It stands on its own. Even if TRUTH is denied or attempts are made to cover it up, it still exists and will ultimately prevail. That is why we should make every effort to remain on the side of the TRUTH. It is not to take the backset to anything!

Consider the boldness of the following statement by Jesus:
“Jesus said to him, “I AM the way, and the TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

No apology! No alternate possibility! No multiple choice! The TRUTH remains that Jesus is the only way to experience true life (both now and eternally) and gain access to the Father.

When we acknowledge Jesus as the Lord of our life there is no need to do so apologetically. Since He is the TRUTH, we are to let that reality be known as the central TRUTH of our life. As we live our daily lives, let us do so boldly living out loud the TRUTH regarding the Sovereign Lordship of Jesus.

Have a great day LIVING TRUE TO JESUS!

Remaining on the Trail!

When hiking it is important to choose the path carefully. Getting off the path may cause the hiker to become lost or bring him to dangerous areas such as the edge of a cliff. One may also find themselves entangled in thick brush. When walking through the woods I like to take the paths which keep me far away from things such as devil’s club, nettles, and sticker bushes. These can either cause pain or snag me, impeding my progress. The same is true in life.

Solomon stated…
“THORNS and SNARES are in the way of the crooked; WHOEVER GUARDS HIS SOUL WILL KEEP FAR FROM THEM.” (Proverbs 22:5 ESV)

There are many things we should be mindful of keeping FAR FROM. By remaining in the Way of God we will be led around and AWAY FROM many of the things by which the world gets snagged. As we journey through life let us remain on guard lest we stray from the path God has laid out before us. May we continue to establish our route according to His Will.

Have a great day CHOOSING THE GOOD PATH!

His Acceptance!

Forgiving those who have wronged us may not always be easy. However, Jesus made it clear that if we are to expect forgiveness from God we must be willing to forgive and to do so from our heart. (Matthew 6:14-15 & 18:35) Certainly there are things which happen we may have difficulty completely forgetting, but in forgiving we must still reach the point we can treat the other individual as if it had not taken place. Is that not the way God views us by the complete forgiveness He provides?

Every time I read the account of the reunion between Jacob and Esau I am impressed by Esau’s response to Jacob’s return as well as Jacob’s own view of his brother’s actions. Jacob knew he had wronged his brother, but after spending many years away he desired to return even though he was very unsure how he might be received by Esau. However, upon seeing Jacob coming Esau ran to him, embraced him, kissed him, and they both wept. (Genesis 33:4) It was a very sweet reunion. The gifts which Jacob had sent ahead of him were not necessary to soften the heart of Esau and Jacob had to urge him to accept them.

We read…
“(9) But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.” (10) Jacob said, “No, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. For I HAVE SEEN YOUR FACE, WHICH IS LIKE SEEING THE FACE OF GOD, AND YOU HAVE ACCEPTED ME.” (Genesis 33:9-10
ESV)

Jacob had wronged Esau and deeply hurt his brother. In fact, Esau had been angry enough to desire to take Jacob’s life. (Genesis 27:41) Though it may have taken time, we see from this scene that Esau eventually set those feelings aside and was willing to eagerly FORGIVE and ACCEPT his brother. To Jacob it was a real gift and was as refreshing as “seeing the face of God.”

When we are willing to genuinely FORGIVE and ACCEPT we are displaying a loving mercy most like God’s. We know how much we are in need of such grace. May we continue to grow in a willingness to extend it in a way that others will perceive that this gracious spirit of God is well and alive within us. Let us respond to others in such a manner that they might glimpse the face of God because of the genuine godly essence of our life.

Have a great day DEMONSTRATING A GRACIOUS GODLY SPIRIT!

Mule Musings!

A boy who was asked to prepare a paper on mules wrote the following: “The mule is a bird that is much larger than a goose or turkey and is quite different. It wears its two wings on the sides of its head. The mule also has two feet for walking, two for kicking, and seems to be awfully backward about going forward!”

A mule may appear to be a strange looking creature to some. However, a more serious matter to ponder is that the mule’s temperament is sadly too familiar with many. The wisdom of the world is so often “backward” to the way of God, with the desires of men continuing in opposition to His Will. And the saddest thing is when this is the picture among those who claim to be God’s people.

Through His prophet Jeremiah, in referring to those who were brought out of captivity in Egypt, God stated…
“(23) But this command I gave them: ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’ (24) But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, AND WENT BACKWARD AND NOT FORWARD.” (Jeremiah 7:23-24 ESV)

And the way of God’s people again and again moved that direction.
“You have rejected me, declares the Lord; YOU KEEP GOING BACKWARD, so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you -- I am weary of relenting.” (Jeremiah 15:6 ESV)

What is the picture of our own life? Stubborn as a mule, many continue to pull away from God, moving “backward” instead of FORWARD. Perhaps we could say that they are very FORWARD in moving “backward” because of the force by which they proclaim their stand. Progression does not take place through the liberal thinking of the world. To label ideas “progressive” does not necessarily equate with real progress in the eyes of God. If we truly want to continue in a FORWARD direction we need to be willing to persist in following Him. Rather than backing away from God and His Will, let us maintain a FORWARD movement toward Him and the righteous standard He has decreed.

Have a great day ADVANCING IN GOD'S WAY!

Can't Help Self?

As Jesus went about His public ministry, He impacted lives in various ways. Some were drawn to love Him deeply while others (due to the hardness of their hearts) resented Him and were greatly angered by His teaching and display of power. Some who tried to trap Him with their questions were silenced by His wisdom and dared not ask Him any more questions. (Luke
20:40) Others were impacted in a way that nothing could have stopped them from SPEAKING, telling others of what HE HAD DONE for them.

On one occasion Matthew recorded the scene of two blind men who followed Jesus, crying out to Him for mercy. They even followed Jesus into a house to get His attention. These blind men believed Jesus could heal them and He did restore their sight.

We read…
“(30) And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, ‘See that no one knows about it.’ (31) BUT THEY WENT AWAY AND SPREAD HIS FAME THROUGH ALL THAT DISTRICT.” (Matthew 9:30-31 ESV)

This was still in the early stages of Jesus’ public ministry and it was already getting difficult to go from place to place without drawing crowds. It was apparently not the time for too much excitement and attention to spread. Nevertheless, how could these but help from SPEAKING about the great act of mercy Jesus HAD DONE for them. I would dare say that it was more than just their eyes that were opened that day. Their hearts and minds were surely opened wider to believing in who Jesus was. And with such a focus on Jesus, their mouths also opened wide to let others know about Him and the life changing power that had touched them.

Though the disciples struggled with some timidity as they learned from Jesus, they reached a point when they too could not be silenced. They could not help but SPEAK what they had SEEN AND HEARD. (Acts 4:20) Do we also feel so compelled when we consider all that CHRIST HAS DONE for us? He has delivered us from the wrath of God. (Romans 5:9) He has taken our sins away by the power of His blood and saved our souls. In a world of unrest He has brought us peace. And the list goes on.

Like the blind men, have we allowed Jesus to open our eyes to how God desires us to live our lives to His glory and praise? Does our life reveal our eyes have been opened to the Way and the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) centered in Christ Jesus? Then let our mouths be opened as well in telling others of the many glorious things HE HAS DONE for us. May we be duly compelled to share the story with others with the hope they too will desire to receive the blessings found in Christ.

Have a great day MOVED TO SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS!

Place of Faith!

When it comes to following what God has asked us to do, how willing are we to step up to the plate when things seem a bit confusing to us? Intellectually we may acknowledge that God will not ask of us anything He will not equip us for or provide the means of carrying out. But in reality do we still tend to feel we must have it all figured out before we step forward into the action?

Consider Abraham. Every time I read the account of his readiness to sacrifice his “only son Isaac” (Genesis 22:2) I am amazed at his faith. Certainly when God gave the command it must have been a bit confusing to Abraham. He and Sarah had waited years for this son and rejoiced at his birth in fulfillment of God’s promise of Abraham’s seed becoming a great nation. Then God says to offer him? But the Scriptures record that when God gave the command Abraham arose, got ready what was needed for the burnt offering, and headed off to the place God had commanded for him to go. (Genesis 22:3) The Scriptures give no hint of hesitation. And all along the way we hear the LANGUAGE OF FAITH.

As they drew near to the place we read…
“Then Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; I AND THE BOY WILL GO over there and worship AND COME BACK TO YOU.” (Genesis 22:5 ESV)

Did Abraham really expect to not return alone? Did He know what God was going to do? The Scriptures do not indicate he had any clue, yet Abraham SPOKE IN FAITH.

When Isaac recognized there was one element missing from the supplies --
the offering itself -- he asked his father about it and we read…
“Abraham said, ‘GOD WILL PROVIDE FOR HIMSELF THE LAMB FOR A BURNT OFFERING, my son.’ So they went both of them together.” (Genesis 22:8 ESV)

Yes, God did supply. (Genesis 22:13) He provided a ram for the burnt offering. Abraham’s faith stood the test, modeling the faith we also should seek to possess.

Faith needs to be genuine within us. And VERBALIZING that faith can encourage the continued focus and prompt us to faithfully act upon it. May we keep a strong faith in our heart, on our lips, and in our actions. That is the continuing place of faith in our life because every aspect of our being ought to respond to God in obedient faith.

Have a great day LIVING AND SPEAKING FAITH’S LANGUAGE!

The Quest for Gain!

People pursue a wide variety of things in this life. And we may take note of those we feel are living in excess while others have very little. It has even been noted that “There is an excess of everything but parking space and godliness.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] The first is that which we might diligently seek to fill when we are out and about. The latter is what we ought to seek for GOD TO FILL in our life.

There are many who think when they have much money and prestige (and some to spare) that they have it made. Nevertheless, how many who live in excess give little thought to God and still seem to live with a lack of contentment? When life is not being FILLED with the right stuff a restless hunger will continue regardless of how much is possessed. Lives can be filled with many things with little true or lasting satisfaction.

As Paul wrote to Timothy he pointed to true gain when he stated…
“(6) Now there is GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS with contentment,(7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” (1 Timothy 6:6-7 ESV)

The truest gain comes when we allow GOD TO FILL us with all that pertains to godliness. (note 2 Peter 1:3-4) The greatest gain we could possibly possess is that of being more like the essence of His image and living a life that reveals a clear understanding of His sovereign Will. And in the process of gaining godliness (a possession of inestimable value for life now and eternity) contentment comes as a natural byproduct of our faith in God’s continued provision.

When we realize the great blessings that are ours in our relationship to God we are better able to perceive what it is that matters most. Our highest gain is found in that relationship and through allowing godly character to continue to develop. May we seek for our manner of living to fill some of the void of godliness in this present age. God can make us adequate for the task.

Have a great day FINDING SUFFICIENCY IN GOD’S BLESSINGS!

Limited Occupancy!

Some hotel and restroom doors have indicators stating either “occupied” or “vacant” and our privacy is protected. Auditoriums, restaurants, and other gathering places often have an occupancy capacity posted and by its observance our safety is protected. But how much consideration do we give to the occupancy of OUR LIFE? The challenge faced by too many is that of being preoccupied with or over-occupied by self, things, or the world when what is needed is to be occupied by Christ. We must be mindful of limiting what we allow to take up occupancy in OUR LIFE. What have we allowed to call OUR LIFE home?

Paul referred to the occupancy we need in the following verses.
“(9) You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, IF IN FACT THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (10) But IF CHRIST IS IN YOU, although the body is dead because of sin, the SPIRIT IS LIFE because of righteousness. (11) If THE SPIRIT OF HIM who raised Jesus from the dead DWELLS IN YOU, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also GIVE LIFE TO YOUR MORTAL BODIES THROUGH HIS SPIRIT WHO DWELLS IN YOU.” (Romans 8:9-11 ESV)

Though Paul was alive, the source of sustaining power in his life was not because he lived, but because Christ lived in him. (Galatians 2:20) If we truly desire to have life to the fullest, we also must be occupied by Christ and the things of God. To have this occupancy in OUR LIFE our safety for eternity will be protected.

What are we allowing to fill up the capacity of OUR LIFE? May we be sure to give up the space Christ deserves in OUR LIFE so that we may continue to receive the manifold benefits His life brings.

Have a great day MAINTAINING A HOME FOR CHRIST!

Staying the Course!

The Scriptures tells us…
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LORD THAT WILL STAND.” (Proverbs 19:21ESV)

We plan. We revise our plans. We prepare backup plans in case the first plan fails. However, that is not the case with God. He sets a plan in motion and stays the course. But how content are we to TRUST THE PLAN OF GOD?

God made a promise to Abraham. He had a plan. God was going to make Abraham into a great nation and his offspring would inherit the promised land. (Genesis 12:2 & 7) However, Abraham was seventy-five years old when he headed to the land of Canaan and received this promise from God. (Genesis 12:4-5) Was there a need for an alternate plan?

Abraham suggested to God a possible “Plan B.” Abraham thought one of his servants could end up being his heir. (Genesis 15:2-3) Even so, God remained firm that Abraham would have offspring and there was therefore no need for an alternate plan. (Genesis 15:4-6) And Abraham BELIEVED GOD.

Nevertheless, time went on. Did God indeed need some help with a backup plan? Sarah came up with a possible “Plan C.” She suggested to Abraham that perhaps he could have offspring through her servant Hagar. (Genesis 16:2) Even Abraham seemed content with the possibility that Ishmael be his offspring through whom the promise of God would be fulfilled. (Genesis
17:18) Still, God had a plan and would stay the course. (Genesis 17:19) Even though Abraham was one-hundred and Sarah was ninety (Genesis 17:17), God declared that “Sarah your wife shall bear you a son” and God would establish His covenant with him and his offspring. (Genesis 17:19)

When we look at life and find ourselves questioning or wondering about GOD’S PLANS, perhaps, like Abraham, what we need to do is look up and begin counting the stars. (Genesis 15:5) Since God has set a plan in motion and needs no backup plans, but rather will stay the course of His sovereign purpose, we ought to TRUST THE PLAN OF GOD in every aspect, making certain we are following along in it. Let us keep BELIEVING!

Have a great day CONTENT WITH THE SOVEREIGN INTENT OF GOD!

Indulging!

There is a sense in which the world is a smorgasbord -- a tantalizing buffet of concepts and ideologies -- and many people are indiscriminately gorging themselves on it all. We face many ills in our society (and in the world at large) today because a lot of stuff being passed off as food for thought is in reality nothing but “baloney.” And if we want to remain healthy emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, and spiritually, we must maintain a serious mindfulness regarding that on which we choose to dine.

Regarding the WORDS OF GOD, the psalmist remarked…
“How SWEET ARE YOUR WORDS to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103 ESV)

If we have a sweet tooth, this is where we can indulge without worrying about caloric intake. There is also no need to be concerned about counting carbs or watching fats or worrying about cholesterol because everything dished out from GOD’S WORD is good for bringing wholesomeness to life. There is plenty in the Scriptures to add much needed “fiber” (character) and increased energy for vibrant living. May we continue to taste “the goodness of the WORD OF GOD and the powers of the age to come” (Hebrews 6:5 ESV) on a daily basis.

Have a great day DELIGHTING IN THE DELICACIES OF GOD’S WORD!

Nipping It In The Bud!

The bud of a flower is a sign there is a time of blossoming coming. It is also a glimpse of the type of flower that is to BLOOM. And in life, the bud of human activity may reveal the potential for either good or evil. When the glimpse is that of evil purposes, nipping the bud keeps the problem from coming into FULL BLOOM. That is what appears to have been the action of God after the flood.

God had given the command for mankind to be fruitful and spread out over the earth. (Genesis 9:1) Nevertheless there were some who decided to make a name for themselves by building a city and a tower in an attempt to keep from be scattered. (Genesis 11:4) Surveying the situation, God saw the need to nip the situation in the bud.

We read…
“And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF WHAT THEY WILL DO. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.” (Genesis 11:6 ESV)

There is great power when people come together with one mind to do something, whether that be for bad or good. When the will is strong there is much that can be done. God saw that these were united as “one people” in this effort and they were speaking the same language. However, the activity and purpose were in direct rebellion to the Will of God and He therefore confused their language to stop the work and fulfill His purpose in dispersing them over the earth.

When we read the commands of God, if we see something beginning to unfold in our life that is contrary to His Will, let us seek to nip it in the bud before it has a chance to blossom. Why is it so important to do so?

Note the progression James described.
“(14) But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. (15) Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:14-15 ESV)

We must be very watchful regarding what we allow to come to FULL BLOOM! As we acknowledge the power in unity of mind and communication for either good or evil we should seek for that unity to be with God and those of kindred spirit. If we seek to speak the language of God (His Word and Will) we will remain in harmony with His purposes. Then what comes to FULL BLOOM in our life will be to His glory and praise.

Have a great day LIVING AS PART OF GOD’S BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET!

Beyond The Heart!

Having a heart that is touchable is important. There is much that begins in the heart, which is why the focus of our affections and desires is so important in life. However, we must also be mindful of movement beyond the heart to a DEMONSTRATION of what is genuinely taking place there.

As John was preparing the way for Jesus, among those who came out to him to be baptized were some of the Pharisees and Sadducees. (Matthew 3:7) Apparently they saw John’s ministry associated with a new beginning and wanted to be included. Nevertheless, John seems to have questioned their motives and pointed to the need of a life DEMONSTRATION consistent with a proper heart focus in responding to his message of repentance.

John boldly exhorted…
“BEAR FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE” (Matthew 3:8 ESV)

A penitent spirit is more than being sorry for wrong. To repent is to turn and change direction in life. And a heart touched in such a way should be evident by a DEMONSTRATION of changed behavior and direction of life.

Does our life DEMONSTRATE “fruit in keeping with repentance”? May we maintain a heart that is touchable by the truth in a way that our outward life will reveal the genuineness of following God’s Will.

Have a great day BEARING FRUIT CONSISTENT WITH LIVING FOR CHRIST!

Seeing the Big Picture!

There are COSTS involved in many things. However, the COST of not doing some things can be much greater than the COST associated with doing them. For example, to not spend the money to build a house well or maintain a vehicle could bring the more expensive COST of complete replacement and the loss of all initial investment. There are also many things which may be quite expensive at the time of implementation which end up saving much in the long run. When COST is being considered the whole picture needs to be viewed.

As Jesus addressed the idea of the COST of following Him, He noted some general examples regarding the wisdom of counting the COST in life. (Luke 14:28-33) By doing so, Jesus was not trying to discourage people from following, but was instead emphasizing the serious and sincere consideration that must be given to following Him. The reality is that the highest COST is associated with the refusal to follow.

On another occasion Jesus warned…
“(36) For WHAT DOES IT PROFIT a man TO GAIN the WHOLE WORLD AND FORFEIT HIS LIFE? (37) For what can a man give in return for his life? (38) For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” (Mark 8:36-38 ESV)

There is no denying the fact following Jesus has its COSTS. But do we recognize that in the end it will surely be worth it all? To not follow carries a much higher price tag than following. May we continue to keep the bigger picture in view as we make our daily choices in life.

Have a great day CHOOSING TO CONTINUE THE FOLLOWING!

Getting Things Ready!

David looked around and above himself and asked…
“(3) When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, (4) WHAT IS MAN THAT YOU ARE MINDFUL OF HIM, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4 ESV)

Every time I read through the Genesis account of creation, I can’t help but think of what a wise and wonderful Creator we have. Reading through the order of creation from the first day (when God created light) to the second (when He separated the waters above from the waters below and gave us sky) followed by the third day (the creation of vegetation) and on to the fourth day (when God placed the sun, moon, and stars in the heavens by which we would know our days, seasons, and years) to the fifth day (with the creation of the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air) and finally coming to the sixth day (when He created the animals and then man) -- I can’t help but be struck by the view of each previous day’s creation providing that which would help sustain life for what was created next. With man being the crowning work of God’s creation (created in His image -- Genesis 1:27) it seems all that preceded was in PREPARATION for our existence. God created a place suitable for living life in the flesh and it was all good!

Are we sufficiently impressed with God’s ability to PREPARE and provide what is necessary for our continued existence? Do we ever question His ability? Certainly our walk in this realm is one of faith. Nevertheless, that faith can rest on a marvelous track record of God’s works revealed throughout the pages of Scripture. God PREPARES and He provides. Whatever He has planned He will do. All He has declared He is fully capable of fulfilling.

Just as God PREPARED this world as a suitable place to live our physical lives, He PREPARED the way for the coming of the Messiah to provide the means of a holy spiritual life as well. However, that has not been the end of Divine PREPARATORY work.

Jesus encouraged the disciples…
“(2) In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU? (3) And if I GO AND PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU, I will come again and will take you to myself, THAT WHERE I AM YOU MAY BE ALSO.” (John 14:2-3 ESV)

We are included in that promise of having a place PREPARED for an eternity above. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) It should be clear what God is able to PREPARE. Perhaps the real issue for us to consider is our own PREPARATION for what God has in store. Now is the time to be PREPARED for that which is to come; Heaven being a PREPARED place for a PREPARED people. May we continue to live daily as genuine children of God seeking to please Him by following His Will.

Have a great day LIVING READY FOR GOD’S GREATEST PROVISION!

Begin Again!

When I was in grade school, I learned a silly song about a man named Michael Finnegan. The first verse went something like this:

“There was an old man named Michael Finnegan.
He grew whiskers on his chinnigan.
The wind came up and blew them in again,
Poor old Michael Finnegan … begin again."

I think we learned at least a dozen verses which all seemed to convey the idea that poor old Michael Finnegan never made much PROGRESS. Every time he attempted something he ended up right back where he began. He’d catch a fish only to drop it in again, grow large and then grow thin again, would climb out of a pond and fall back in again, etc. What a pitiful thing to picture again-again.

On the other hand there are some things which are very good to begin again. Today, the first day of a New Year, I have once again-again begun my annual reading through the Bible; my practice for many years. Today I read again-again the first three chapters of Genesis and the first chapter of Matthew. Every time I read through the Bible I learn something or am reminded of things I need to keep in mind. I receive encouragement and chastisement and wisdom; all intended by God to help me PROGRESS spiritually and in other ways as well. Daily reading of God Words helps guard against being lead astray from the truth or carried away by the notions of this world.

As Peter ended his second letter, he exhorted…
“But GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18 ESV)

Yes, we need to grow daily in our knowledge of Jesus and PROGRESS in becoming more and more like Him. Through daily exposure to God’s Word we can PROGRESS toward more spiritual maturity. I continue to be amazed at what can be picked up when the same passages are returned to again-again as each year rolls by.

If daily Bible reading has not been your practice, I encourage you to begin today. It only takes a few minutes each day to read through the Bible in one year. You just need to decide on a time of day that works best for you and do it. By reading three to four chapters in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament even just six days a week will easily get you through the Bible in one year. If you would prefer to focus your meditation time on the New Testament, that can be done by reading only five chapters a week for fifty-two weeks. Whatever you choose just begin and let it become a habit. You will be richly blessed.

Have a great day GROWING DAILY WITH GOD’S WORD!
