Self-Improvement!
When it comes to self-improvement, where do we turn? Bookstore shelves are filled with self-help books and certainly there is some benefit which can be gained from such reading. However, an important key to self-help is recognizing the need for help beyond ourselves.
Someone has stated, “People seldom improve when they have no model but themselves to copy after.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] If we are going to improve in character, we need a STANDARD higher than ourselves. For us to follow our own inclinations will elevate our activity no higher than our own desires. To rely upon our own reasoning for life will make us no wiser than what we already understand. Improvement of self ultimately comes from looking higher than self.
Paul exhorted the Corinthian brethren to…
“Be IMITATORS of me, as I am OF CHRIST.” ( 1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV)
The only way Paul could be a worthy example for others was if he continued to imitate Christ. The life of Christ was the STANDARD Paul kept in view for living his own life. It is to be the same with us. Christ is the safe STANDARD by which to model our lives because in Him we find a perfect example. Unlike ourselves, the example of Christ needs no improvement. There is nothing unholy, untrue, or unwise associated with Him. And since the ultimate goal is for us to be like Him (i.e. 2 Corinthians 3:18; 1 John 3:2) we must continue to aim to model our lives after Him.
We can never improve upon Christ’s STANDARD, but modeling our lives after His life will gradually bring about the greatest improvement to self we could possible gain. May we continually strive to model our lives after His perfect example.
Have a great day AIMING TO LIVE LIKE CHRIST!
Carl
