It Is Good!
My calendar quote this morning was, “Confession is good for the soul --
and sometimes royalties.” Confession takes place for many reasons. Sometimes people confess only because they have gotten caught or because they know the truth is soon to be revealed anyway. And we may be disturbed by the money sometimes generated from the sale of “Tell All” books written by the corrupt or immoral who have been caught. Some people either find such to be fascinating reading or simply enjoy focusing on the miserable lives of others.
Note David’s focus on genuine confession.
“(1) Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. (2) Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! (3) For I KNOW MY TRANSGRESSIONS, and MY SIN IS EVER BEFORE ME. (4) AGAINST YOU, you only, HAVE I SINNED and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.” ( Psalm 51:1-4 ESV)
First of all, David knew the wrong he had done. He called it “transgression” because he had crossed the line. He called it “iniquity” because he recognized his behavior had been immoral. He called it “sin” because that is exactly what it was for he had very definitely missed the mark. There was no masking it by any other name. And to remain silent would have left a miserable weight upon him. (note Psalm 32:1-4) David’s need was for humble acknowledgment and sincere confession to God.
Because of Christ and the willingness of God to forgive, there is no need to remain in a miserable state. Confession is truly good for the soul and the body. Humble acknowledgement and confession are HEALTHY because such action reveals the focus is on where one is so that proper change can take place. It is also a HEALTHY release of the guilt as we accept the forgiveness only God can provide. Through genuine confession comes the HEALTHY renewal of the relationship to God and the broken heart within.
Confession is a HEALTHY part of our relationship to God. It is important, however, for that confession to be genuine, especially since what is recorded in His book is what counts most. ( Revelation 20:12) May we enjoy the HEALTH that comes from the honest and humble acknowledgement of sin that we may receive the gracious forgiveness of our God.
Have a great day STRENGTHENED BY THE GRACE AND MERCY OF GOD!
Carl
