Where Does The Time Go?
How often do we find ourselves waiting for a more convenient time or slack times to get some things done? Students in school find themselves so busy right now. Those working have so many deadlines and things to cram into their day. Even many retired folk I talk to tell me they feel like they have less free time now than when they were working.
It seems like this year has been passing by so quickly. Here we are already in the second to the last month of the year. I remember last Winter looking forward to resigning from a board in the Spring, yet some of the things I had planned to do once that happened are still undone. The Summer slipped by so quickly, here it is Fall, and Winter will soon be upon us. All too quickly we find ourselves moving from one season to the next without finding the convenient times to do some of the things we keep putting off.
Recently reading through Jeremiah I have again been struck by how tough it must have been for this preacher of righteousness. Every time I read of his life I understand why he was referred to as the “weeping prophet.” (He also wrote Lamentations.) The king and the people continued to listen to false prophets rather than listening to God’s warnings through his prophet, Jeremiah. Jeremiah was treated poorly and his life was threatened, but God spared him. However, he must have felt a great deal of frustration trying to get the nation to repent of their sins or prepare for the coming Babylonian captivity.
Among the messages of Jeremiah I have been deeply struck by the following words each time I have read them.
“ (18) My joy is gone; grief is upon me; my heart is sick within me.
(19) Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people from the length and breadth of the land: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” “Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images and with their foreign idols?” “(20) The harvest is past, THE SUMMER IS ENDED, AND WE ARE NOT SAVED.” ” ( Jeremiah 8:18-20 ESV)
Where does the time go? It passes by so quickly. We can’t always count on tomorrow, let alone the next season. We therefore need to focus on the right priorities and UTILIZE THE TIME WE HAVE NOW or the opportunities will quickly slip away. And when it comes to our spiritual life, how sad to be struck with the possibility, “Summer has ended, and we are not saved.” As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth he reminded them that “NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.” ( 2 Corinthians 6:2)
Let us be careful of falling into the trap of waiting for a favorable time. The most favorable time is THE TIME WE HAVE PRESENTLY. May we not allow it to slip past unused, but instead be diligent about utilizing THE PRESENT TIME to God’s glory and our eternal benefit.
Have a great day SEIZING THE MOMENTS AS GOD BRINGS THEM!
