But Plenty of What?

This is a time of year when there is special emphasis on that for which we are thankful. It is a time of thankfulness for many blessings including bountiful tables of delicious foods as well as the consideration of sharing with those who may not have as much to eat.

Not everyone is thankful for the same things. There is a tendency among many to not always place the emphasis of their focus of thanksgiving on the most important aspects of life. Certainly many people may have plenty, but plenty of what? Someone has said, “Plenty in the purse cannot prevent starvation in the soul.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips” compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

The church at Laodicea was warned because they had the wrong perception of themselves.
“(17) For YOU SAY, I AM RICH, I have PROSPERED, and I NEED NOTHING, NOT REALIZING that YOU ARE WRETCHED, PITIABLE, POOR, BLIND, AND NAKED. (18) I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.” ( Revelation 3:17-18 ESV)

Though they may have had plenty physically, they were in reality destitute SPIRITUALLY. They were undernourished in spirit and soul, having reached such a state that they could not even perceive their true condition.

Remember the rich fool who had full barns and the need to build even bigger ones due to the bounty of his crops. There was no question regarding him being the possessor of plenty. However, the tragedy for him was the reality of his poverty toward God. ( Luke 12:21)

Remember Jesus’ promise to those who would hunger and thirst after RIGHTEOUSNESS. He said it is they who shall be filled to satisfaction. ( Matthew 5:6) May we be certain each day to obtain a heaping helping of that which will truly nourish our soul.

Have a great day BEING WELL FED IN SPIRIT AND SOUL!
