Well, I Declare! (part 2)

If the “heavens DECLARE the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1) as we noted yesterday, should we, as a part of God’s Creation, not do the same?

The Psalmist believed we should.
“DECLARE HIS GLORY among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples.” (Psalm 96:3 NIV)

How do we declare God’s glory? The same way the rest of Creation does:
by fulfilling the purpose for which we were created! As we do His Will we reveal our Maker’s purpose in His design. He is glorified as that which He has made serves its intended purpose and usefulness.

As we are a part of His Creation we bear the mark of our Maker.
“And we, who with unveiled faces all REFLECT THE LORD’S GLORY, are being TRANSFORMED into his likeness with EVER-INCREASING GLORY, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV)

Our very existence is meant to bring glory to God! Is His glory being reflected in our daily lives? Is God’s glorious purpose made evident by the way we go out about each day the Lord provides? Paul encouraged:
“So whether you eat or drink or WHATEVER YOU DO, do it ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD.” (I Corinthians 10:31 NIV)

Have a great day allowing your LIFE TO BE A DECLARATION of God’s glory!

Well, I Declare! (part 1)

When crossing the border from Canada into the U.S., a question generally asked is, “DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO DECLARE?” What the border officials want is for us to MAKE KNOWN anything of a VALUE requiring a “duty fee” which we might have purchased during our visit.

The Psalmist stated:
“(1) The HEAVENS DECLARE the glory of God; THE SKIES PROCLAIM the work of his hands. (2) Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-2 NIV)

Creation has something to DECLARE of VALUE regarding God Himself. The heavens make known God’s glory and the creative work of His hands.

The HEAVENS DECLARE! Do we? Do we have something of VALUE to DECLARE to the world? As we meditate on our relationship with God and the blessings He has brought into our lives, what are some of the things of VALUE we ought to be DECLARING to the world? Spend some time in meditation on that idea today and (Lord willing) we shall consider it further over the next few days.

Have a great day PREPARED TO DECLARE!

Carried Along!

As we gathered with family for Thanksgiving Day, one of the highlights of our time together was when there were about seventeen of us still together in the evening joining for over an hour and a half in singing hymns together. I am so thankful God has blessed us with a spirit of SONG. Singing is therapeutic in so many ways. It draws hearts together. It is calming. It is strengthening. It encourages a spirit of pressing on. It directs the focus heavenward. It helps center the mind on the things that matter most.
And above all, joining together in SONG with those of kindred spirit is a taste of Heaven. One of the things I look forward to in eternity is being able to join in the praise of Heaven without having to worry about a temporal voice wearing out.

I think of the psalmist who wrote…
“By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and AT NIGHT HIS SONG IS WITH ME, a prayer to the God of my life.” (Psalm 42:8 ESV)

A song to soothe. A song to encourage. A song to remind that God is mindful of every experience we go through whether it be day or night.

Also…
“LET THE GODLY EXULT IN GLORY; LET THEM SING FOR JOY ON THEIR BEDS.”
(Psalm 149:5 ESV)

Anytime and anywhere we can enjoy the power of SONG. Whether we are running the words and melody silently through our mind, sing out loud by ourselves as we go through various moments of the day, or joining with others in the lifting of the voice in praise; a SONG of the heart can be just what the Doctor (the Great Physician) ordered. Even those who may feel they can’t carry a tune in a bucket can still carry a SONG in their heart.
May we continue to experience the wonderful blessing from God a SONG can truly be to ourselves and with whomever we might share the experience.

Have a great day CARRIED ALONG BY A SONG OF GOD IN THE HEART!

Breaking Away!

We need to maintain a HEART that is penetrable, touchable, yielding to that which is righteous. Our HEART must be closely guarded to make sure it does not become hardened by sin. It is the broken and contrite HEART (Psalm 51:17) which God desires us to possess because that is the kind of HEART which is able to respond appropriately to His Word and Will.

Someone has well said, “True repentance means not only a heart broken for sin but from sin.” [source: sentence sermons]

We must possess a HEART which does more than just acknowledge sin. We need to be serious about guarding against cherishing some secret sin. Instead it is important to be quick to separate ourselves far from it before it has a chance to begin mastering us.

Paul admonished those at Rome…
“(1) What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? (2) By no means! HOW CAN WE WHO DIED TO SIN STILL LIVE IN IT?” (Romans 6:1-2 ESV)

The tie to sin needs to be severed. Our walk needs to be somewhere else. Repentance is to be the action of turning and breaking the HEART away from affection toward sin by drawing the HEART’S affections ever closer to God and His Will. May we allow a sincere love for God and His Way to be the tie that binds.

Have a great day LIVING IN THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD!

Continuing Thanks!

A family sat down at the table to eat dinner one evening and one of the children immediately began to fill their plate and eat. “We haven’t had a prayer yet,” declared the father. “But these are leftovers and we prayed for them yesterday,” responded the child.

Though for this year the day designated “Thanksgiving” has now come and gone we may still be dealing with the LEFTOVERS. In fact I enjoyed some more waldorf salad for lunch today. Those remnants of what the tables were laden with yesterday may still be very much enjoyed even for a few more days and our thanks for them should still be expressed.

We may also be experiencing the LEFTOVER feelings of special moments with family and friends still lingering within us. Such feelings within are certainly better than those from indigestion due to overeating. And I don’t believe we can over do it when it comes to loving family and expressing thankfulness for the relationships we share.

Paul urged the church at Colosse…
“And WHATEVER YOU DO, in word or deed, DO EVERYTHING IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS, GIVING THANKS TO GOD the Father through him.” (Colossians
3:17 ESV)

One day of thanks does not even come close to being adequate for the bountiful blessings (both physical and spiritual ) God has provided. No matter how much thanks we may have given yesterday, we should have plenty of thanks LEFT-OVER for the blessings which came with this new day. May we rightly focus on the multitude of blessings which are ours so as to nourish a spirit of continual thanksgiving.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE SWEETNESS OF A THANKFUL SPIRIT!

Thankfulness for Family!

To me, the word “family” has a real sweetness to it. Time spent in fellowship and worship with the family of God is special. That’s the way God wants it to be. And though we are to be good to all, this is to be especially so within the household of God (Galatians 6:10) because of the special association with Him.

Today I am looking forward to spending some special time with my parents, my two brothers, our children and grandchildren, and other relatives. The time spent together is going to be very precious. Today -- a very precious gift from God -- will be a great day of THANKSGIVING because of the special loving relationship we share as a family by blood, but also because we are all members of God’s family. And though we may not know how many “Thanksgivings” we might share together in this realm, we know that our sharing in THANKSGIVING will go on because of the eternal hope that is ours.

David wrote…
“(8) But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. (9) I WILL THANK YOU FOREVER, because you have done it. I will wait for your name, for it is good, in the presence of the godly.” (Psalm 52:8-9 ESV)

David knew he belonged to the house of God forever. Because of this there would truly be no end to the THANKSGIVING he would offer.

As David focused on the great help God had provided him, he said,
“(11) You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, (12) that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I WILL GIVE THANKS TO YOU FOREVER!” (Psalm 30:11-12 ESV)

Though this life may provide us with some times of grief, because of our relationship with God we can be assured that our mourning will pass, being replaced by THANKSGIVING which will go on FOREVER.

As the psalmist Asaph focused on belonging to God, he also noted such THANKSGIVING when he stated…
“But WE YOUR PEOPLE, THE SHEEP OF YOUR PASTURE, WILL GIVE THANKS TO YOU FOREVER; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.”
(Psalm 79:13 ESV)

Regardless of what may happen tomorrow either with ourselves or those we love, as members of God’s family today will not be the last THANKSGIVING we will share. May we continue to be encouraged in view of the fact our praise and THANKSGIVING will go well beyond this time and place and on into and through the eternity God has prepared for those who belong to Him now.

Have a great day LIVING FOREVER THANKFUL!

Doing God's Will!

Doing God’s Will is something on which we should focus daily. Our willingness to follow the Will of God is a reflection of how much we appreciate the life He has provided and the eternal hope of which He assures us. As we come to know more and more of God’s Will, what we need to guard against is disregarding or attempting to explain away that which we may find difficult to do. Is God going to ask anything of us for which He will not provide the needed encouragement and strengthening? Accepting and following through with doing God’s Will is a matter of love for Him and a trusting faith in His continued provision for this life and eternity.

Paul exhorted the church at Thessalonica to…
“(16) Rejoice always, (17) pray without ceasing, (18) GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES; for THIS IS THE WILL OF GOD in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)

Rejoicing may come about very easily through the many wonderful experiences of life. Perhaps we also find it to be a very natural inclination to keep on praying through both the good times and the difficult. However, when it comes to being inclined to give thanks IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, it is there we may find the struggle. Not ALL CIRCUMSTANCES are good! Not every situation is pleasant! However, Paul stated that giving thanks IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES is God’s will for us. It is what He desires us to do.

How is it possible for us to give thanks IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES? It is only because we are in Christ that such an attitude can be possible, for it is God Who has the power to work all things together for good. (Romans 8:28) We might not always know what will become of every situation, but God does. Maintaining an unwavering faith in His Divine wisdom to know what is best for us and His supreme power to guard us for eternal life is what will help us retain a thankful spirit regardless of the situations we might be going through. May we keep our abiding trust in Him as we seek to always do His Will.

Have a great day THANKFUL GOD ALWAYS KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING!

Thanks a Lot!

“Thanks a lot!” Those words are sometimes uttered sarcastically when someone has done something which was really of no help at all. And when a child is coaxed to thank someone for something they really aren’t excited about, the tone of voice reveals the HEART is not really in it. However, is such only found among children or are we also sometimes guilty of offering halfhearted thanks?

A thankful HEART is developed through keeping all aspects of life in proper perspective. Certainly each one of us has experiences for which we are not thankful. But at the same time there is still much for which we should be able to offer genuine thanks. We just need to be careful which list (the good things or bad things) we choose to remain focused upon.

Though David faced various battles in his life, he continued to look for the hand of God to bring deliverance and deal with his enemies. Even in the midst of unfair treatment we don’t find him exhibiting a “woe is me” attitude, but rather one of thanks for what David knew God would provide.

How much of David’s being would offer thanks?
“I WILL GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD WITH MY WHOLE HEART; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” (Psalm 9:1 ESV)

No sarcasm. No halfhearted expression. As David focused on the grand list of the works of his God he would offer WHOLEHEARTED thanks. May that characterize our thanksgiving also as we recount -- both in our mind and even verbally to those around us -- all the ways in which God has and continues to richly bless us.

Have a great day MARKED BY A SPIRIT OF THANKSLIVING!

But Plenty of What?

This is a time of year when there is special emphasis on that for which we are thankful. It is a time of thankfulness for many blessings including bountiful tables of delicious foods as well as the consideration of sharing with those who may not have as much to eat.

Not everyone is thankful for the same things. There is a tendency among many to not always place the emphasis of their focus of thanksgiving on the most important aspects of life. Certainly many people may have plenty, but plenty of what? Someone has said, “Plenty in the purse cannot prevent starvation in the soul.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips” compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

The church at Laodicea was warned because they had the wrong perception of themselves.
“(17) For YOU SAY, I AM RICH, I have PROSPERED, and I NEED NOTHING, NOT REALIZING that YOU ARE WRETCHED, PITIABLE, POOR, BLIND, AND NAKED. (18) I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.” (Revelation 3:17-18 ESV)

Though they may have had plenty physically, they were in reality destitute SPIRITUALLY. They were undernourished in spirit and soul, having reached such a state that they could not even perceive their true condition.

Remember the rich fool who had full barns and the need to build even bigger ones due to the bounty of his crops. There was no question regarding him being the possessor of plenty. However, the tragedy for him was the reality of his poverty toward God. (Luke 12:21)

Remember Jesus’ promise to those who would hunger and thirst after RIGHTEOUSNESS. He said it is they who shall be filled to satisfaction. (Matthew 5:6) May we be certain each day to obtain a heaping helping of that which will truly nourish our soul.

Have a great day BEING WELL FED IN SPIRIT AND SOUL!

On The Journey!

Though I do a lot of walking on a regular basis (rain or shine) I have to admit there are still occasional days when I am tempted to not go. However, I always find once I have started I am so glad I did. No journey can ever be experienced unless it is begun.

Consider heading out early in the morning on a hike. Though the sun may not have fully risen to completely light the way and the morning air is a bit cool and damp, the anticipation of the journey and the thought of new discoveries along the way can greatly encourage the traveler to move on out. Then as the daylight gradually but steadily shines BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER there arises a great sense of joy for having had enough desire to have begun the journey. With the full light of day what is seen reveals the journey was worth continuing the walk.

Solomon described the spiritual walk in this same manner.
“But the PATH OF THE RIGHTEOUS is like the LIGHT OF DAWN, which SHINES BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER UNTIL FULL DAY.” (Proverbs 4:19 ESV)

The journey on the path God lays before us is begun. We take the first steps carefully because the WAY is not fully clear to us. But as we continue to press on in His WAY, the understanding of all that relates to the Son gets BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER as the day with Him unfolds until we are able to see very clearly the WAY in which we are being led. As we continue walking in the light as He is in the light (1 John 1:7) the path cannot help but continue to become BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER the longer we travel in the WAY. As natural as it is with the sun of the day, it is even more so with the Son of the WAY to eternal life. May we resolve to continue steadfastly on the journey.

Have a great day WALKING IN THE LIGHT!

Being Surprised!

“I’m surprised at you!” Those are words sometimes stated when someone is shocked by the actions of another. But in a world where many seem so content to let just about anything go, some are surprised by nothing anymore. We need to guard against becoming so accustomed to seeing wrong that we are no longer bothered by it, because for such to occur is easier than we might think. Gradual immoral changes around us can become for us like the frog in the pot of water of which the temperature is slowly, but steadily increased until the frog is cooked. This is in contrast to the shock of a sudden temperature change which would normally cause the frog to immediately hop out, thus saving its life.

Consider another side to being surprised. Just as there are varying views with regard to what is acceptable and unacceptable, so there are varying reasons why people are surprised.

After listing several sins among the world (note 1 Peter 4:3), Peter stated…
“(4) With respect to this THEY ARE SURPRISED WHEN YOU DO NOT JOIN THEM IN THE SAME flood of debauchery, and they malign you; (5) but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.” (1 Peter 4:4-5 ESV)

Verse four in the New Living Translation reads: “ Of course, YOUR FORMER FRIENDS ARE VERY SURPRISED WHEN YOU NO LONGER JOIN THEM IN THE WICKED THINGS THEY DO, and they say evil things about you.” [NLT, © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.; Tyndale House]

Teens, think seriously before you say to your parents, “But everyone else is doing it.” Perhaps that alone might be good reason to not be involved. And that is good advice for all of us regardless of age.

Let the world be surprised! Our personal quest needs to be that of remaining focused on LIVING “FOR THE WILL OF GOD” (1 Peter 4:2) regardless of what might be going on around us. Let it be clearly seen we are LIVING BY A HIGHER STANDARD than that of the world. If the world refuses to acknowledge it now, they will surely be surprised when the time comes to give an accounting of their life. May the righteous choices we make reveal “THE WISDOM FROM ABOVE” (James 3:13 & 17) with the hope those around us will be convicted by the truth regarding right and wrong while there is still opportunity for repentance.

Have a great day AS A BRIGHT LIGHT IN A DARK WORLD!

Feelings!

Feelings can be funny fellows. Sometimes we get a funny feeling about something though we may not be sure why? In such situations we might simply become cautious. There are also times when we may have difficulty adequately expressing the way we feel. The first time I told my wife (in the early stages of our courtship) I loved her was in a song written for her. It is possible to experience feelings which can both defy description and understanding. However, it is still beneficial to others for us to try making a HEART CONNECTION when they are bearing a burden of some kind. As we attempt to sympathize (feel for) with others in their situations and to even move to the deeper level of trying to empathize (feel with) as well, we should still keep in mind we may not fully understand what is being experienced deep down inside another person.

Solomon stated…
“The heart knows its own bitterness, and no stranger shares its joy.” (Proverbs 14:10 (ESV)

The emotions everyone feels even through the same experiences may not always be the same. The fullness of one’s inner pain or inner joy may not be fully revealed to others. Sometimes people prefer to keep those deepest feelings within. There are also times when an individual’s laughter covers some hidden pain. What we must guard against is assuming too much and saying such things as “I know just how you feel” or “I know just what you are going through.” Though these words are often spoken by well meaning individuals, each person’s feelings are quite their own.

When it comes to our own feelings, we must guard the actions we allow them to trigger. And when it comes to the feelings of others, perhaps the most important thing for us to do is simply be there for them while trying to draw their focus upward to the One Who does truly understand all things. Even though we might even verbalize we don’t know all the emotions another is experiencing, the support of our PRESENCE AND PRAYERS can still be very beneficial and greatly appreciated.

Have a great day TOUCHED TO ENCOURAGE!

Trust!

“In God We Trust!” Those words are printed on our US currency and coins. They are displayed on walls and engraved on cornerstones or other parts of some of our national structures. Certainly we recognize that not everyone in this country truly does trust in God. There are many who trust in the money those words are written upon. Others trust in there own selves or other earthly relationships. However, when trust in God is truly real, how is it made evident? Someone has said, “Americans trust in God. You can tell it by the way they drive.” [source: bulletin clipping]

Perhaps we would agree that “someone” must be looking out for some of the crazy drivers out there. It may truly be an exercise of great faith on our part to be willing to join them on the highways. But what is it that truly does reveal our own personal trust in God? Consider one thing exhibited in the life of David.

Though David faced many challenges and dangers, he still declared…
“(10) In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise,
(11) IN GOD I TRUST; I SHALL NOT BE AFRAID. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 56:10-11 ESV)

If we DRIVE recklessly or ride with those who do so, there may be great room for fearfulness. However, if our life is DRIVEN by a sincere trust in God, that should aid in removing fear from our life. Do others sense a calm about us even when we face this life’s varied challenges?

Peter exhorted…
“Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will ENTRUST THEIR SOULS TO A FAITHFUL CREATOR WHILE DOING GOOD.” (1 Peter 4:19 ESV)

Some people become paralyzed by fear. Instead of being fearful, we are called to trust in God while continuing to do the good works He has prepared for us to do. We may encounter many “speed bumps” and obstacles on the road of life. Nevertheless, we should remember the faithfulness of God.

The Hebrew writer encouragingly exhorted…
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope WITHOUT WAVERING, for HE WHO PROMISED IS FAITHFUL.” (Hebrews 10:23 ESV)

“In God We Trust!” Do we? Does it show? May that genuine trust in God be revealed to be a true DRIVING force in our life.

Have a great day ALLOWING FAITH TO DRIVE OUT FEAR!

The Compelling Reason!

Our society looks for and exalts the professionals, not the amateurs. However, who might find the most joy in what they are doing? And what is the reason behind the actions being performed? You might find it interesting to note that one dictionary source gives the first definition for the word “amateur” as “somebody who does or takes part in something for pleasure rather than for pay.” [source: Microsoft ® Encarta ® Encyclopedia, © 2002] Yes, the professionals get paid the big bucks. That may be the very thing which drew them to their profession and keeps them there. However, the thing that compels the amateur is simply the pleasure derived from the activity and that seems to be true whether we are talking about amateur athletes, musicians, or whatever. In fact our English word “amateur” comes from the Latin, “amator” (lover) and the French “amare” (to love). [source: Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary, © 1971] It is LOVE for the activity which motivates the amateur’s involvement.

Paul referred to those who were…
“(5) …depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, IMAGINING THAT GODLINESS IS A MEANS OF GAIN. (6) Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” (1 Timothy 6:5b-7 ESV)

Certainly “the laborer deserves his wages.” (Luke 10:7) Jesus said so! But if financial gain is the reason I preach then I would probably spend a good deal of time looking for the “team” where I could get paid the most instead of focusing on the work at hand. Some might even say that if it was money that was so important an entirely different profession ought to be pursued. Key to sticking with many endeavors is the possession of a LOVE for what one is doing.

It is true there are many professionals who do truly love what they are doing and many of notoriety who appear to have remained humble and helpful to others. However, a challenge faced by some professionals is that of letting self get in the way or allowing all the attention on them to go to their head.

There can be great glory in being an “amateur” servant of God in the true sense of the word. To possess a LOVE for people and a LOVE for the truth of God’s Word are both topnotch qualities to be found in the lives of God’s servants. Such a passion is what God desires to grow within us and it will not escape His notice.

The Hebrew writer noted…
“(10) For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and THE LOVE THAT YOU SHOWED FOR HIS SAKE IN SERVING THE SAINTS, AS YOU STILL DO. (11) And we desire each one of you to SHOW THE SAME EARNESTNESS to have the full assurance of hope UNTIL THE END, (12) so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” (Hebrews 6:10-12 ESV)

Let us allow sincere LOVE to continue to be the compelling force in the service of our lives to the glory of God.

Have a great day SERVING GOD FOR THE LOVE OF IT!

Exercising Freedom!

We may have a great appreciation for the freedom we have in this country (the USA). And though we might be rightly mindful of the ways in which our freedoms overlap those of others and how such may require a little give and take, our freedom ought to be used for that which is truly GOOD. Our desire to have our individual freedoms preserved may be very strong. However, one great problem with freedom is that the freedom to do some things does not necessarily make them right. As someone has well said, “Too many people are clamoring for freedom to do what ought not to be done.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] How we accept and use our freedom is very important.

Peter exhorted…
“(13) Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, (14) or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. (15) For this is the will of God, that BY DOING GOOD you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. (16) LIVE AS PEOPLE WHO ARE FREE, NOT USING YOUR FREEDOM AS A COVER-UP FOR EVIL, but living as servants of God.” (1 Peter 2:13-16 ESV)

Peter did not write this to people who were living under a perfect government. And though we may enjoy living in a democracy, our government also is far from perfect. Nevertheless, one of the things which was very encouraging to me following our recent presidential election was that much of our media mentioned a focus on moral issues played a deciding role in the outcome of the election. What that tells me is that in spite of a lot of liberalism today there are still many people who are concerned about moral issues, especially those relating to the family.

As we focus on our personal freedoms, let us always be mindful of the freedom to do that which is GOOD and RIGHT, bearing in mind that as much as we might enjoy citizenship in this country, our lasting citizenship is above. (Philippians 3:20) May we daily exercise our freedom for the GOOD of others and the glory of our God.

Have a great day LIVING AS FREE SERVANTS OF GOD!

Cinching It!

I applied for a new job today and I’m pretty confident I got it. I’m sure I impressed the CEO of the company and will probably move up through the ranks quickly. As soon as I sat down for the interview I began to tell the CEO everything they were doing wrong and advised him on the changes that would help generate more profit for the company. The way he stared at me while I talked, I’m sure he was amazed at the wisdom I was able to offer. In fact the interview went so well they didn’t have to spend as much time with me as the others interviewing for the job. I was in and out of there so fast I’m sure they were also impressed by what a quick worker I can be. Yes, I’m pretty certain I cinched that job!

The truth is, I did not interview for a new job today. However, it is not hard to imagine the negative impact such an approach would have. The scenario above is the least advisable way to try to impress a potential employer. We would probably all admit that we KNOW BETTER than that. Unfortunately that is not the case with all people.

We may have had occasion to encounter an individual who appeared to think they knew it all. I recently read the following calendar quote: “Those who think they know it all are very annoying to those who do.” Perhaps we have been put off by such an egotistical attitude. Yet the real tragedy is that many live their lives ignoring the wisdom of God, therefore revealing they apparently think they KNOW BETTER than He does.

Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul stated…
“(14) The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (15) the spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. (16) “FOR WHO HAS UNDERSTOOD THE MIND OF THE LORD SO AS TO INSTRUCT HIM?” BUT WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST.” (1 Corinthians 2:14-16 ESV)

We don’t instruct the Lord, rather HE INSTRUCTS US! In order to cinch life, we need to accept His instruction, thus revealing we truly do KNOW BETTER than those who think they know all they need to know already. Let us continue to seek to please the Lord and gain the benefit He desires to bring into our lives by accepting the instruction He offers. In this way we will begin to develop more of His mind and we should know that that has to be BETTER than being left to our own limited wisdom.

Have a great day HUMBLY BENEFITING FROM THE WISDOM OF GOD!

Expectations!

If I walked into the shop of a furniture maker, I would not expect to look at furniture which boasted, “Look at me. Be impressed with me for what I can do.” I might be impressed with how functional the furniture was, but my compliment would go to the builder and designer for his wonderful WORKMANSHIP. Before the hammer or saw ever came into contact with any part of the furniture, the designer already had a specific function in mind. As far as the furniture itself (whether it be a roll top desk, a cabinet, or a chair) I would merely expect it to serve the function for which it was made. There would be no room for any boast on the part of the furniture as if it had made itself or decided on its own purpose. Therefore, for it to fulfill any purpose less than that for which it was made to serve would simply not be acceptable.

Though we are more than a piece of furniture that might get shoved around in a house, there is still a parallel as to how we must regard our lives. It is far too easy for us to become so focused on ourselves and what we are doing that we lose perspective of what our life is to truly be all about.

Paul exhorted…
“(8) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, (9) not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (10) For WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV)

Being involved in good works is what we are to do. The works are a natural expectation. However, our works do not save us. They don’t even give us room to boast. Any boasting on our part is to be with regard to our Lord. (note 1 Corinthians 1:31 ) As God’s WORKMANSHIP, we were created (or recreated) in Christ to fulfill a particular function which God had in mind beforehand. Since His works are what we were made suitable for, to be anything less would be unacceptable. May our lives impress upon others the reality of there being a Master Craftsman behind us.

Have a great day NATURALLY SERVING GOD’S INTENDED PURPOSES!

Worklight!

I have a “droplight” hanging in our garage. Now, the dictionary defines a “droplight” as an electric light that can be raised or lowered by using a rope, cord, or pulley. I have often mused that the reason it is called a “droplight” is that I frequently drop it and have to replace the bulb. My “droplight” has been handy for hanging in the attic when I’m looking for things stored there. It has also been helpful for seeing underneath the car or hanging it down around the engine for a better viewing around all the hoses and wires. Good light makes work go much easier.

Someone has said, “Every truth we know is a candle given us to work by.”
[source: sentence sermons]

The psalmist put it this way…
“YOUR WORD is A LAMP to my feet and A LIGHT to my path.” (Psalm
119:105 ESV)

Every time we open God’s Word and read from it we should see something a little bit clearer. God has provided the illumination we need to be able to see Him and our own lives better and thus how we are to relate to Him. The TRUTH also sheds light on our life in a manner which enables us to see what is out of place that might hinder our spiritual progress. And the light of God’s Word also reveals the work we are to be involved in as His servants.
The more TRUTH we know the more light we will have by which to live and work. May we continue in its light.

Have a great day TURNING UP THE LIGHT FOR BETTER SERVICE!

No Slackers!

Slackers! Just to say it -- simply to have the word roll off the tongue -- doesn’t seem right. When we consider a cable or rope having slack in it we would take note of the lack of support that might be there. The same is true when people approach labors with slackness. Slackers are those who try to get by with doing the least that might be necessary. And if a way can be found to not do something at all -- that is considered by them to be even better.

How do we feel about slackers? Or, more importantly, what is God’s view, especially when it comes to His purposes?

Reading through Jeremiah this week I was struck by a passage which I immediately underlined. After completing my morning reading I went back and read it again, printed it out, and put it on the wall in my office where I will see it on a regular basis. It is only the first part of the passage which I printed out, but here is the whole verse with the part which ought to convict us in capital letters.

“CURSED IS HE WHO DOES THE WORK OF THE LORD WITH SLACKNESS, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.” (Jeremiah 48:10 ESV)

The emphasis of this verse was specifically associated with the judgment God had directed toward the wickedness of Moab, with the point being that whatever God declared would happen was to be carried out with diligence. There was to be NO HOLDING BACK. His Will was to be CARRIED OUT COMPLETELY. And is that not what God expects with any of His commands?

Perhaps the spirit of such willingness to GIVE IT OUR ALL may be summed up in the words of Solomon when he stated, “Whatever your hand finds to do, DO IT WITH YOUR MIGHT,….” (Ecclesiastes 9:10a ESV) Is the spirit being revealed in our lives?

As we focus on carrying out the Will of God, may we always give serious consideration to our attitude and willingness to serve His purposes. When it comes to the things of God, that is not the area of our life to cut corners, aim to just get by, or hold back in any way. Instead, let us always be mindful of offering God our VERY BEST EFFORTS. After all, where has He ever cut corners in blessing our lives?

Have a great day MARKED BY DILIGENT EFFORT TO GOD’S GLORY!

Is It Slipping?

Slipping! That can be dangerous. Slipping on ice can cause serious injury. Slipping down stairs or a steep embankment, on a loose rug, a wet floor, or any other slick surface can produce serious injurious results. However, the worst slipping is that which is the consequence of sin. When someone uses the expression “Your halo is slipping” the reference is to sin or inappropriate action being displayed in the life. It needs to be PUSHED BACK UP!

Jeremiah, in view of the fallen state of God’s people, declared…
“THE CROWN HAS FALLEN FROM OUR HEAD; woe to us, FOR WE HAVE SINNED!”
(Lamentations 5:16 ESV)

Though Jeremiah was a faithful prophet of God, he did not elevate himself above the people as being sinless. (note also Lamentations 1:22) He was humbly aware of his own short comings. But as Jeremiah considered the position of beauty and majesty God’s people had once held among the nations (note Lamentations 2:15 & 4:1-2), he mourned over the sight of her fall. Instead of heeding God’s warnings, the nation had listened to false prophets (Lamentations 2:14) and continued to slip from the position God had provided for Jerusalem and her people. How sad that the crown had not just slipped, but had fallen completely off, leaving the people to become subservient to the Babylonian empire.

We ought to keep in view the position God has granted us, lest we too slip from the glory God desires us to possess.

Peter declared…
“(9) But YOU ARE A CHOSEN RACE, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR HIS OWN POSSESSION, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (10) Once you were not a people, but NOW YOU ARE GOD’S PEOPLE; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10 ESV)

Is the crown slipping; the glorious position we have been granted in Christ? As citizens of His eternal kingdom, are we sincerely striving to live up to God’s expectations? Or are we becoming subservient to the powers of the world and the inclinations of the flesh? Just as mournful a sight as the loss of Jerusalem’s glory is that of the glory of each individual who, though created in the image of God, allows that image to slip. Let us continue to live mindful of the crowned life (note Psalm 8:3-5-8) God created us to possess. Whenever we sense that crown slipping, let us be sure to PUSH IT BACK UP. Such living will be to our Creator’s glory and our eternal benefit.

Have a great day LIVING THE ELEVATED LIFE IN CHRIST!

Making Beautiful Music Together!

After sending out the focus titled “Striking A Chord” a couple days ago, I received the following illustration via e-mail from our oldest son who preaches in Scappoose, Oregon. It relates to a subject I have dealt with before, but illustrates the point so well I thought it was worth passing on.

“At a meeting of the American Psychological Association, Jack Lipton, a psychologist at Union College, and R. Scott Builione, a graduate student at Columbia University, presented their findings on how members of the various sections of 11 major symphony orchestras perceived each other. The percussionists were viewed as insensitive, unintelligent, and hard-of-hearing, yet fun-loving. String players were seen as arrogant, stuffy, and un-athletic. The orchestra members overwhelmingly chose “loud”
as the primary adjective to describe the brass players. Woodwind players seemed to be held in the highest esteem, described as quiet and meticulous, though a bit egotistical.
“Interesting findings, to say the least! With such widely divergent personalities and perceptions, how could an orchestra ever come together to make such wonderful music? The answer is simple: regardless of how those musicians view each other, they subordinate their feelings and biases to the leadership of the conductor. Under his guidance, they play beautiful music.”
[source: Today in the Word, June 22, 1992]

When we consider the dynamic differences between abilities, personalities, and preferences within the church, we might wonder how unity and working together could ever be possible. Yet it does happen in beautiful ways. Reading through Paul’s letters to the church at Corinth their struggle to be more unified was very apparent. However, similar to musicians submitting to the leadership of the conductor in order to come together and bring forth beautiful music, we too must humbly submit to the leadership of our Lord. Under His guidance HARMONY is possible! Like the Corinthian brethren we must remember we are each one part of a bigger picture. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 2:5-9 & 12:12-26) Though there are times a musician may be featured in a symphony, for the most part each member must be willing to submit to the direction of the conductor for the sake of balance and blend.

Writing to the church at Rome Paul urged…
“(5) May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to LIVE IN SUCH HARMONY WITH ONE ANOTHER, IN ACCORD WITH CHRIST JESUS, (6) that TOGETHER YOU MAY WITH ONE VOICE GLORIFY the GOD and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:5-6 ESV)

Let us each humbly submit to the Lordship of Christ. He is the One Who can bring us together for the BLENDING of voices and lives to the glory of God and the enjoyment of one another. May we keep our eyes on Jesus as He directs us through life’s masterpiece.

Have a great day WITH JESUS AS THE MAESTRO OF YOUR LIFE!

Footprints On The Sands Of Time!

I enjoy a variety of places in which to walk in and around our community. When walking on one of the beaches in our area I find it interesting to notice the variations of footprints in the sand. It can even be fun to try to FOLLOW IN THEM. The sizes of print and length of stride help tell the difference between the print of a child and that of an adult.
Sand kicked forward of the print or just the print of the toe of the shoe are sometimes indications of someone having been running instead of walking.
Perhaps we might note prints indicating a child’s hopping or skipping or even playfully twirling across the beach. We may even see prints indicating a running toward and then a retreating from the incoming waves. And I am sure print experts can tell a lot more, including the weight of individuals.

Note three quotations regarding the leaving of foot prints which I came across some time ago, but looked up again today.

“Most footprints on the sands of time were made by work shoes.”
“In the footprints on the sands of time, some people leave only the mark of a heel.”
“If we can’t leave our footprints on the sands of time, we can at least keep them out of the police files.”
[source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C.
McKenzie.]

As we move along through the “sands of time” what kind of PRINTS are we leaving in our path. What do they convey about our life and how we are traveling through it. Are they rushed? Are they playful? Are they panicked?
Are they leading others in a good direction? Are they following in the steps of another worth following?

In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome, he referred to the footprints of Abraham.
“and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but WHO ALSO WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE FAITH that our father ABRAHAM HAD before he was circumcised.” (Romans 4:12 ESV)

The Greek translated “footsteps” here is “ichnesin”, from “ichnos” which (according to Strong’s Lexicon) refers to a footprint, track, or footstep and is used metaphorically in the New Testament for imitating the example of another. This same word is used in 1 Peter 2:21 for us walking in the steps of the example of Jesus. He left the prints of which we are TO FOLLOW IN. How well are we FOLLOWING in the footprints of the faith of Abraham? How much are we striving to continue FOLLOWING in the footprints of Jesus. Are we willing to FOLLOW wherever they go? Certainly their shoes may be seen as too big to fill. However, we can still step into the prints they have left and FOLLOW in them. We might have room to put both our feet into each print, but what better place to plant our feet than in the footprints they have been left for us to FOLLOW in. May we remain determined to continue walking in them, marking the way for others also as we go.

Have a great day LEAVING PRINTS OF FAITH ALONG THE WAY!

Striking A Chord!

In this life we can find ourselves easily STRETCHED too thin as we try to cram so many activities into each day. However, there are times when something is important enough to STRETCH ourselves just as much as possible; going beyond our comfort zone, surpassing our supposed abilities, putting forth some extra effort, etc. When it comes to the most important things in life we should be ready to move beyond the ordinary effort that might be otherwise put into other undertakings.

Peter exhorted those he wrote to…
“ABOVE ALL, KEEP LOVING ONE ANOTHER EARNESTLY, since love covers a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8 ESV)

Of all the things Peter wrote to these brethren, this was one thing to be kept in mind “above all.” Love is an important characteristic of our walk with God and in our relationship with one another. It can be no other way. (note 1 John 4:8 & 20-21)

The word Peter used which is translated “earnestly” (ESV) or “fervent” (KJV & NASB) or “deeply” (NIV) has an interesting background. The word is “ektenes” which (according to Vine’s Exp. Dict. Of N.T. Words) literally signifies something “strained” or “stretched out” (“ek” being “out” and “teino” being “to stretch”). It is therefore used metaphorically to refer to an earnestness, fervency, or intenseness in doing something. It is a word used for stretching out to sleep or simply stretching out a part of the body. However, being a musician with a special fondness for stringed instruments I find it interesting that this word (according to some) was also used with reference to the strings of an instrument being STRETCHED tightly so as to be playable in tune.

Love STRETCHED out! Neither my violins, guitars, or dulcimers sound very good when the strings are not properly tightened. As such they would make noise rather than sweet music. The same is true in our relationships when we do not possess a proper degree of love. Sometimes teens will refer to those with whom they are “tight.” Perhaps that could be an expression of our love within the church. It is only with an earnest love for one another that we can create true harmony within the family of God. Jesus loved us enough to literally STRETCH out His arms and die on the cross for our sins. How much we are willing to STRETCH ourselves out for one another will depend on the degree of love we possess. May we continue to strive for an earnestness of love that will promote sweet harmony among us.

Have a great day LIVING LIFE IN TUNE WITH GOD AND OTHERS!

What's New?

The Old Law commanded…
“You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:18 ESV)

Jesus addressed that principle in His teaching.
“Honor your father and mother, and, YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” (Matthew 19:19 ESV)

But Jesus also gave a new command regarding love.
“A NEW COMMANDMENT I give to you, that you love one another: JUST AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, YOU ALSO ARE TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.” (John 13:34 ESV)

Love is not new. The command to love one another is quite old. What was new between the two commands was the STANDARD by which the love was to be measured. Love for self (to treat and care for others in a way self desires to be treated and cared for) should aid us in our interaction with others. However, to love one another in the manner in which Christ has loved us is an elevation of the STANDARD for love.

How often have people hated themselves for something they have done? How many people have had more difficulty forgiving themselves than others for particular actions? How many people have also reached a point of feeling they were unlovable? And yet, in spite of the world’s sinfulness and outright rebellion, Jesus loved enough to give His life to provide the opportunity for forgiveness and eternal salvation. Writing to the church at Rome Paul stated that this fact was a demonstration of Divine Love. (Romans 5:6 & 8)

Our love, even for self, is an imperfect STANDARD. It is Jesus’ love which needs to become the STANDARD for the way in which we love one another because He loves us better than we can even love ourselves! And that is the essence of the “new commandment” to which we need to hold our lives. May we come to more fully recognize the degree of abiding love our Lord has for us that we may truly learn to love others in like manner.

Have a great day LIVING ACCORDING TO LOVE’S TRUE MEASURE!

Where Does The Time Go?

How often do we find ourselves waiting for a more convenient time or slack times to get some things done? Students in school find themselves so busy right now. Those working have so many deadlines and things to cram into their day. Even many retired folk I talk to tell me they feel like they have less free time now than when they were working.

It seems like this year has been passing by so quickly. Here we are already in the second to the last month of the year. I remember last Winter looking forward to resigning from a board in the Spring, yet some of the things I had planned to do once that happened are still undone. The Summer slipped by so quickly, here it is Fall, and Winter will soon be upon us. All too quickly we find ourselves moving from one season to the next without finding the convenient times to do some of the things we keep putting off.

Recently reading through Jeremiah I have again been struck by how tough it must have been for this preacher of righteousness. Every time I read of his life I understand why he was referred to as the “weeping prophet.” (He also wrote Lamentations.) The king and the people continued to listen to false prophets rather than listening to God’s warnings through his prophet, Jeremiah. Jeremiah was treated poorly and his life was threatened, but God spared him. However, he must have felt a great deal of frustration trying to get the nation to repent of their sins or prepare for the coming Babylonian captivity.

Among the messages of Jeremiah I have been deeply struck by the following words each time I have read them.
“ (18) My joy is gone; grief is upon me; my heart is sick within me.
(19) Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people from the length and breadth of the land: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” “Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images and with their foreign idols?” “(20) The harvest is past, THE SUMMER IS ENDED, AND WE ARE NOT SAVED.” ” (Jeremiah 8:18-20 ESV)

Where does the time go? It passes by so quickly. We can’t always count on tomorrow, let alone the next season. We therefore need to focus on the right priorities and UTILIZE THE TIME WE HAVE NOW or the opportunities will quickly slip away. And when it comes to our spiritual life, how sad to be struck with the possibility, “Summer has ended, and we are not saved.” As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth he reminded them that “NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)

Let us be careful of falling into the trap of waiting for a favorable time. The most favorable time is THE TIME WE HAVE PRESENTLY. May we not allow it to slip past unused, but instead be diligent about utilizing THE PRESENT TIME to God’s glory and our eternal benefit.

Have a great day SEIZING THE MOMENTS AS GOD BRINGS THEM!

Information Overload?

You have probably heard the expression, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.” Well, I came across the following take off from this statement recently: “Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to use the Internet and they won’t bother you for weeks.” [source: bulletin clipping]

Can you relate? Have you gone online looking for some information, only to find yourself clicking link after link after link after link after link of associated material? I have found it does not take long to become far removed from the original information or having some other topic catch my attention and lead me there. That is the whole purpose of the sidebars on websites; to lead us to other links and keep us online.

Sadly that has become the picture of many in this life. They have become overloaded with so much information they have lost sight of the original foundational truths which must be retained and used in comparing all else. They are easily led from one thing to another, using up a lot of time, but perhaps accomplishing little in the end.

Paul referred to some who were…
“always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” (2 Timothy 3:7 ESV)
These are those we might refer to as “educated fools”; people who keep learning lots of information, but who have not developed the WISDOM TO PROPERLY APPLY IT. There are many people who can even quote a lot of Scripture while there continues to be an obvious absence of the transformation in their life intended by God .

The internet has provided the means of finding information very quickly on almost any topic desired. However, not all that is posted on the “information superhighway” is reliable. Not all the advice offered is entirely beneficial.

Remember Paul’s admonition to the church at Rome.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but BE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWAL OF YOUR MIND, that by testing you may DISCERN WHAT IS THE WILL OF GOD, what is GOOD and ACCEPTABLE and PERFECT.” (Romans 12:2 ESV)

I have always loved J.B. Phillips’ translation of this passage. “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold, but let God remold your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves toward the goal of true maturity.” [“The New Testament in Modern English”, by J. B. Phillips, The MacMillan Co., © 1959]

We do need to be careful what we upload or download into our minds; guarding against overloading ourselves with too much of the world’s wisdom.
May we continue to load our minds with the truth of God, WISELY APPLYING IT in all areas of our life. Our time in God’s Word is always time well spent!

Have a great day BEING WELL FED FOR ETERNAL LIFE!

Righteous Sensitivity!

There are times when it appears people are overly sensitive. They take every word and action of others as if it were all intended to be a personal jab into their heart. There are even situations in our society due to a focus on “political correctness” [though “Biblical correctness” is a far better guide) where even what was at one time considered to be a courtesy might be taken wrong. Such over sensitivity has caused some people to become afraid to do anything for fear their actions will be misunderstood. Yet in the midst of all this there are times when it appears to me the only group that is not guarded against being offended in our society is Christians!

However, there is also the other extreme. Some people have become so thick skinned (or thick headed) they can’t take a hint or even a very direct point needed to be understood. There are times we might look at others in the world, shaking our heads as we think, “They just don’t get it!”

Solomon noted…
“A rebuke goes DEEPER INTO A MAN OF UNDERSTANDING than a hundred blows into a fool.” (Proverbs 17:10 ESV)

Part of the description here almost seems to describe those who cannot have anything beat into them. Some are so thickheaded nothing can be pounded in. No matter how hard one tries they just won’t get it. Even Jesus, the One who had the wisdom to provide the best answer to every question, conversed with some who were too hardened to accept what they needed to understand.

We all need words of encouragement. They are generally pretty easy to accept. However, we are also all in need of INSTRUCTION, which may include a rebuke from time to time. Are we humble enough to accept? May we keep the sense that will allow us to accept the DIRECTION we need in order to become the people God desires us to be.

Have a great day BEING SENSIBLY OPEN FOR GROWTH!

Infectious!

There has been a lot of concern regarding not having enough flu shots available for everyone who wants them. People from our state have even traveled to Canada in order to get in on the supply there. However, there is a worse sickness than the flu -- something which can be highly CONTAGIOUS -- with much more serious side affects and ultimate results.

Someone has stated … “Sin is not inherited, but it is contagious.”
[source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie.]

Paul declared “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) Being concerned about the CONTAGIOUSNESS of it, he warned the Corinthian church regarding what they were apparently allowing to remain in their midst (note 1 Corinthians 5:1-5), asking “Do you not know that A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENS THE WHOLE LUMP?” (1 Corinthians 5:6 ESV) Just like yeast working through a whole batch of dough, sin’s INFLUENCE must not be underestimated. Though it may work silently, it’s power steadily begins to take over.

As Paul wrote to the church at Galatia, he stated his alarm at how they had allowed themselves to be influenced away from the truth they had received. They had accepted a gospel which was no gospel at all. (Galatians 1:6-9) What they had been drawn away to did not hold the power and the complete hope of the true which Paul had preached in their midst.

Again, using the “leaven” analogy, Paul wrote…
“(7) You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? (8) THIS PERSUASION is not from him who calls you. (9) A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENS THE WHOLE LUMP.” (Galatians 5:7-9 ESV)

Who are we running with? What influences are we hanging around? As we try to INFLUENCE those around us we must guard against underestimating the potential power that unrighteousness has to INFLUENCE us instead.

Let us do our best to infect this world with righteousness. May our life exhibit an infectious godliness, joy, love, peace, etc., that will potentially INFLUENCE the lives of those around us to accept the Way of God.

Have a great day HELPING THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS TO BE CATCHING!

Day of Decision!

A “Day of Decision” -- that is what many see today while heading to cast their ballots for our countries elections. Candidates are being decided between and measures are being either accepted or rejected. Some are having to spend time in long lines for their opportunity to cast their vote. However, for many (including my wife and I) the decisions were made long ago as we already voted by absentee ballot. I’m not sure how everything will turn out once all the votes have been counted, but we considered the ISSUES carefully are are thankful for the process we have and the freedom to have our say.

Joshua addressed the nation of Israel on a “Day of Decision.”
“(14) Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and SERVE THE LORD. (15) And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, CHOOSE THIS DAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD.” (Joshua 24:14-15 ESV)

Today’s “Day of Decision” has great significance relating to some of the pressing ISSUES our country is facing. However, the decision Joshua directed the attention of Israel toward was that of the greatest significance for that day as well as the present. My wife and I made that decision years ago and are thankful our three children have married Christians and continue to be active in the Lord’s church even today. I believe my parents made that decision as well; faithfulness to God has marked the homes of my brothers also.

People who walk up to the door of our house will note a silver plate off to the side which declares our choice to serve God (from Joshua 24:15). We have had people comment regarding that statement when they have rung our doorbell. However, it is the true declaration of this resolve in the way we live our lives that is of utmost importance. When the decision has been made to sincerely serve the Lord, the other ISSUES of life will be easier to be brought in line with the values of God. We face lots of ISSUES, but need to see how those relate to our decision to serve the Lord. Our heart focus must be closely guarded because out of it flow “the ISSUES of life.” (Proverbs
4:23 KJV)

As Paul wrote to Timothy, he stated…
“The aim of our charge is love that ISSUES FROM A PURE HEART and A GOOD CONSCIENCE and A SINCERE FAITH.” (1 Timothy 1:5 ESV)

Some people have trouble with the ISSUES because they have not yet resolved the greatest decision that must be made. May we continue wholly committed to God, looking to Him for His direction as we consider all the choices we meet in this life. The ISSUE of our number one allegiance to God is on what all other decisions should be determined. May the life of each one of us truly reflect the steadfastness of our decision of choosing to serve God.

Have a great day HAVING MADE THE RIGHT DECISION FIRST!

Honestly!

Honestly now, can we believe the way some people treat others? We look at the world around us and see people being abused and used and slighted and deceived. The saddest thing, however, is when that is seen taking place within the church.

The church is described as the body of Christ; Christ being the head (Ephesians 1:22-23) with the members belonging to each other (Romans 12:5). Since this is the case how are we to act toward one another? Our difficulty at times is not so much with our acknowledgment of the authority of Christ as it is the importance of a proper relationship with the rest of His body. Some even appear to think they can have a relationship with Christ without having one with His body, the church. Physically speaking that would seem to indicate an amputation has taken place and in turn would also signify a lack of proper connection to the Head.

Note one aspect of the relationship as noted by Paul to the church at Ephesus.
“Therefore, having put away falsehood, LET EACH ONE OF YOU SPEAK THE TRUTH with his neighbor, for WE ARE MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER.” (Ephesians 4:25
ESV)

Consider the physical body. If danger is seen, are the eyes going to lie and let the feet walk on into it? And if the feet sense they are stepping onto unstable ground, are they going to lie to the eyes that might think it looks clear, allowing them to be erroneously confident regarding the way? The various senses of our physical body WORK TOGETHER for the benefit and safety of the WHOLE body. Should it not be the same within the spiritual body of Christ? There is no room for deception and falsehood within the body of Christ. Instead, truth and love are to be hallmarks of the relationship. There is to be continued MUTUAL benefit and edification. As the physical body shares equal concern for each of its parts, so it is to be within the church.

To the church at Thessalonica, Paul exhorted…
“And we urge you, brothers, ADMONISH the idle, ENCOURAGE the fainthearted, HELP the weak, BE PATIENT with them all.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14 ESV)

Whether it be the painful sensation of stubbing our toe or the comforting feeling of sitting in a soft chair, our head is aware of what is going on and the rest of our body responds accordingly as well. Jesus made it clear that what we do (or don’t do) to others is the same as doing (or not doing) it unto Him! (Matthew 25:34-45) May we keep in view the WHOLE body picture in a way that our involvement in MUTUAL care will produce MUTUAL benefit to the glory and pleasure of Christ Who is the Head.

Have a great day RELATING RIGHTEOUSLY TO ONE ANOTHER!
