Love Of Our Life!

Our first love -- our “number one squeeze” or “love of our life” as the world puts it -- what or who is it? For some it is a hobby, an occupation, a possession, self, a boyfriend or girlfriend, or someone else. We have been given the capacity to love lots of things and lots of individuals without diminishing the love we have to spread around. However, toward what (or
whom) our love is foremost directed is important to consider.

Jesus stated…
“Whoever loves father or mother MORE THAN ME is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter MORE THAN ME is not worthy of me.” ( Matthew 10:37 ESV)

Now, Jesus did not say, “don‘t love these”! The New Testament is very clear regarding the proper approach to family relationships and even the view toward enemies. (note Ephesians 6:1-4 and Matthew 5:44) With relationships come responsibilities that are not to be ignored. (note 1 Timothy 5:8) It is just that Jesus is to have the first focus of our love. The Greek in this passage implies that no one is to be loved “over” or “above” Jesus. His claim to our affection is to be above all else. And as we properly love Him and His Will, a proper love will be directed in the other areas of our life as well.

Remember, Jesus set nothing else above our salvation. We are certainly not WORTHY of such a provision. However, Jesus stated we become WORTHY of Him when we truly love Him above all else. We have therefore been called to maintain a proper perspective with regard to the recipients of our love. May we continue to walk WORTHY of the calling we have received. ( Ephesians 4:1; 1 Thessalonians 2:12) as Jesus retains the first focus of the love of our life. It is in Him that truest life for both now and eternity is found.

Have a great day LEARNING TO LOVE THE LORD MORE!
