A Zealous Spirit!

The Greek from which we get the word “zealous” (zeleuo, zelos, zeloo) points to the idea of setting one’s heart on something, being diligent, eager, and earnest. And the object on which the heart is so set is important to consider. Paul was one who never seemed to be lacking with regard to a spirit of zealousness. Though the zeal in his life before submitting to Christ was not always properly directed (i.e. Philippians 3:6) it was a powerful characteristic of his life.

In what ways is a zealous spirit to be evident in our own life? To begin with we must be certain our zeal is in accordance with proper knowledge.
( Romans 10:2) We ought to be zealous for good works ( Titus 2:14); that being characteristic of those who belong to God. Zealousness should be an attribute of those who are leaders. ( Romans 12:8) We ought to possess a zealousness with regard to proper relationships with one another within the church. ( 2 Corinthians 7:7) Paul also mentioned the zeal of the Corinthians in their generosity which in turn encouraged the generosity of others. ( 2 Corinthians 9:1-2) To what extent has our heart been set on such things?

From all of this we ought to clearly understand how important it is to possess a spirit of zealousness. However, there is one more association the Scriptures mention which also must be kept in mind.

Note part of the counsel directed to the church at Laodicea.
“Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so BE ZEALOUS AND REPENT.” ( Revelation 3:19 ESV)

What will it mean for us to possess a zeal for REPENTANCE? Such zeal will indicate a diligence in seeking for our life to remain on the right track. Instead of reluctance to give up worldly things, such a spirit will reflect an eagerness to give up whatever might stand between us and God. We will have an eager readiness to turn around at the first hint of moving the wrong direction. There will also be an earnestness in setting our heart on things above ( Colossians 3:2) as we strive to please the Lord in all we say and do in life.

May we truly possess a genuine zeal associated with a proper understanding of God’s Will. Living daily with a heart eagerly responding to the Word of God will serve to retain our faithful relationship to Him and sustain a life of faithful service to His glory.

Have a great day LIVING PASSIONATELY FOR GOD!
