Face of Faith!
A couple weeks ago we were beginning a discussion in Hebrews 11. Based upon the definition of faith given by the Hebrew writer in the first verse of that chapter, the class was asked to write a one sentence definition of faith using the words “anticipation” and “assurance.” There were a number of good definitions shared by the class, but I was unfortunately not quick enough to write them down as they were shared. Here, however, is the definition I offered: “Faith is the complete assurance of the anticipation that all God has said will come to complete fruition.” This is the faith I want to grow more in; a faith that removes all doubt.
Someone has stated, “Faith makes the uplook good, the outlook bright, the inlook favorable, and the future glorious.” [author unknown]
Faith has great power to impact the WAY WE LOOK at life. As we meet a diversity of situations, the kind of faith we possess determines our overall view of what is being faced. There are often two possible ways of looking at each particular situation. What we need is the kind of faith that turns our face away from the negative and pessimistic view toward the good, bright, favorable and glorious outcomes God can ultimately bring as we continue to trust and follow His Will.
John encouraged…
“(4) For everyone who has been born of God OVERCOMES the world. And this is THE VICTORY that has overcome the world -- OUR FAITH. (5) Who is it that OVERCOMES the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5 ESV)
The key to a victorious UPLOOK, OUTLOOK, INLOOK, and keeping a face toward a glorious FUTURE, is faith in Jesus as the Son of God, and His ability to bring us safely through this life and into His glorious eternal realm. May we keep a faithful face toward Him.
Have a great day ESTABLISHED AS AN OVERCOMER!

Being Immortalized! (Part 2 of 2)
As we noted yesterday, mankind has tried various means by which to immortalize himself. However, even man’s best efforts are not sufficient to bring that about. How do we face the reality of our immortality? Where do we find encouragement in the face of our great limitations? How can we find assurance that our life is not lived in vain?
Paul encouraged…
“(53) For THIS PERISHABLE BODY MUST PUT ON THE IMPERISHABLE, and THIS MORTAL BODY MUST PUT ON IMMORTALITY. (54) When the PERISHABLE PUTS ON THE IMPERISHABLE, and THE MORTAL PUTS ON IMMORTALITY, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’ (55) ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ (56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But THANKS BE TO GOD, WHO GIVES US THE VICTORY THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. (58) Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that IN THE LORD YOUR LABOR IS NOT IN VAIN.” (1 Corinthians 15:53-58 ESV)
It is only in the Lord that we can seek and find immortality (Romans
2:7) because, IN JESUS, death (eternal separation from God) has been abolished and “life and immortality” have been brought to light through the gospel. (2 Tim. 1:10) Life in this realm is not all there is to our existence. Our God has provided the means to sufficiently bridge the present with eternity.
As Jesus prepared His disciples for his eventual crucifixion and death, He encouraged them with these words: “…Because I live, you also will live.”
(John 14:19 ESV) Jesus can offer the hope of eternal life because He Himself is eternal. And if we remain in Him Who is eternal, we can have the assurance of an eternal existence with Him. May we never lose sight of that hope.
Have a great day LIVING IN THE ETERNAL ONE!

Being Immortalized! (Part 1 of 2)
Picking up the paper and listening to the news we are often quickly reminded of the mortality of humanity. Every funeral I conduct is a reminder of human mortality and the need to use our days wisely, living prepared for the inevitable. However, we see many living in the world seeking various means of immortalizing themselves. Health is closely monitored to provide the greatest possibility for longevity. And in the recognition of this life’
s unavoidable end, buildings and lands and philosophies are branded with their names.
In the Psalms we read…
“(7) Truly NO MAN CAN RANSOM ANOTHER, OR GIVE TO GOD THE PRICE OF HIS LIFE, (8) for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice,
(9) that he should live on forever and never see the pit. (10) For he sees that even the wise die; the fool and the stupid alike must perish and leave their wealth to others. (11) Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, THOUGH THEY CALLED LANDS BY THEIR OWN NAMES. (12) Man in his pomp will not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.” (Psalm 49:7-12 ESV)
Though man tries to immortalize himself it is not possible. Even the buildings and lands on which his name is placed (note verse 11) crumble or change hands to the eventual loss of the memory. The physical cannot be held onto forever.
We cannot buy more years. The psalmist stated the ransom price for our life is too high; we cannot pay it. There is also no cure for death. Though new medicines and cures are found, man’s wisdom is not enough to make humanity immortal. Nor are our own best efforts sufficient. Even our right choices with regard to diet and exercise do not always guarantee cancer or some other disease won’t overtake us.
How do we face the reality of our immortality? Where do we find encouragement in the face of our great limitations? How can we find assurance that our life is not lived in vain? Lord willing we will consider that tomorrow.
The psalmist did go on to reveal his focus.
“But GOD WILL RANSOM MY SOUL from the power of Sheol, for HE WILL RECEIVE ME. Selah” (Psalm 49:15 ESV)
May we continue to look to God as the author and sustainer of our life.
Have a great day TRUSTING GOD BEYOND OUR OWN EFFORTS!

The Religion You Have!
Someone has rightfully pointed out… “It is not worthwhile to argue about the religion you haven’t got.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
How can someone think they can encourage others to attend where they do not attend? How can one expect to encourage others to get their priorities right when they themselves appear to put the world before God? As I have seen individuals try to do such it has not been surprising when their efforts have failed. I have heard people argue and passionately defend Biblical points they did not appear to practice in their own life. How can anyone possibly expect to get others to take seriously something that is not SEEN to be taken seriously themselves.
James warned…
“If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, THIS PERSON’S RELIGION IS WORTHLESS.” (James 1:26 ESV)
The way we CONDUCT our lives says much more about what we believe than do the claims we make. We can argue the truth of Scripture until we’re blue in the face, but if we are not living out those truths in our daily lives, why should we expect to be taken seriously?
Paul exhorted the church at Philippi…
“What you have LEARNED and RECEIVED and HEARD AND SEEN IN ME --PRACTICE these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
(Philippians 4:9 ESV)
Are we living in such a way that we could -- in all good conscience -- encourage others to practice what they have learned, received, heard, AND SEEN in us? Paul’s aim was that in all things Christ would be glorified in his life. If that is also our sincere focus for living, then the holy and practical value of our religion will become evident.

Humility!
What is it that makes maintaining a spirit of humility important? First of all because “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
(James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 quoting the Greek of Proverbs 3:34) We do not want to be opposed by God. When we know that “God is for us” we don’t have to fear who might be against us. (Romans 8:31) We also must acknowledge how much we are in need of God’s grace, living in a manner which reveals a true appreciation for it.
David noted…
“(8) Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. (9) He LEADS THE HUMBLE in what is right, and TEACHES THE HUMBLE his way.” (Psalm 25:8-9 ESV)
David’s description of a spirit of humility is the possession of a LEADABLE and TEACHABLE spirit. We need to remain humble enough to honestly acknowledge we are still in need of guidance beyond ourselves. We must also maintain a spirit of humility that honestly acknowledges we still have much to learn and that which we might think we know may need to be drawn closer in harmony with God’s Will.
God LEADS and TEACHES the humble because the possession of such a spirit allows Him to do so. May we each continue to surrender our will to His in all areas of our life that we may receive these rich benefits from God.

Following His Example!
Paul recognized the importance of setting an example. However, he also knew in order to set the right example he needed to focus on the right one himself. (1 Corinthians 11:1) Being an example is easy. Everybody is an example of something. It is the QUALITY of our example of which we must be mindful.
Writing to the church at Galatia, Paul stated…
“And from those who seemed to be influential (WHAT THEY WERE MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO ME; GOD SHOWS NO PARTIALITY) -- those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me.” (Galatians 2:6 ESV)
After Paul had labored with the churches in the region of Galatia, there were some who seem to have followed and created unrest among these believers. Apparently there were some who thought of themselves as being something when they were nothing because he cautioned against such an attitude. (Galatians 6:3) But Paul based his life and ministry on the authority of God rather than men. (note Galatians 1:11 - 2:5) He also aimed to view others in the same manner in which God did. Since God did NOT SHOW PARTIALITY -- not categorizing mankind by outward appearance or social status -- neither would Paul. This may have aided Paul’s ministry in at least two respects. First, such an attitude allowed Paul to escape being overly influenced by the views and status of others. Secondly, this seems to have helped him connect with people from all walks of life, thus providing many opportunities to share the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
God SHOWS NO PARTIALITY! Paul exemplified that in his own life. As we follow that example we also will be an example worthy of being followed, we will safeguard our own life against being overly influenced by the status of others, and we will have a large barrier removed allowing us to connect with others with the message of Jesus. May we follow on in this likeness of God.

Self-Test!
Back when I was in school I can remember being given a pre-test. The test did not count for a grade, but was designed to help each of us in the class see how well prepared we were for the REAL EXAM! Some students, in cramming for their FINALS, might make up a self-test to see how much they know or have learned in order to gauge their preparedness for the FINAL ONE!
Such effort can help instill a sense of confidence in approaching the day.
As Paul neared the end of his second letter to the church at Corinth, he exhorted the brethren there to take a close look at themselves.
“EXAMINE YOURSELVES, to see whether you are in the faith. TEST YOURSELVES. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (2 Corinthians 13:5
ESV)
Examine and test! To see whether or not we are in the faith is not something we want to leave to the last minute. Spending our time doing our own thing rather than spending it preparing for the eternity to come, expecting the opportunity to “cram” at the last minute, is a gamble we should not want to take. Now is the time to take a close look to see how spiritually fit our life might be. Now is the time to test and prove whether or not we are in the faith.
This is one test we do not want to fail! The day will come when God will declare whether or not we have PASSED the test. God has provide “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3) so that we can be prepared for that day. Is Christ in us? Is His presence clearly evident? Are His attributes alive in our life? Are we truly striving to walk in His steps?
Let us take a close look at how well we are allowing God to transform our lives more and more into the image of His Son. If we are in Christ and Christ is in us, we can have confidence in approaching that FINAL DAY (1 John 4:17) before the Father.
Have a great day AS A GOOD STUDENT OF GODLINESS!

Pearls! (Part 7 of 7)
Each pearl in a necklace has individual value. However, strung together, they make up something of even greater beauty and value. As we view each verse of God’s Word as a precious and valuable pearl of thought and wisdom, strung together they make up something of even greater beauty and that value should be recognized.
Each of the Beatitudes Jesus shared in His sermon on the mount (Matthew
5) contain a valuable stand alone lesson regarding attitude or character.
But strung together we see how they enhance each other and provide adornment for life of inestimable value. When we look at other teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, we may note other times they beautifully strung Scripture together.
Solomon wrote…
“(8) Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, (9) for they are A GRACEFUL GARLAND for your head AND PENDANTS for your neck.”” (Proverbs 1:8-9 ESV)
And…
“A word fitly spoken is LIKE APPLES OF GOLD IN A SETTING OF SILVER.”
(Proverbs 25:11 ESV)
Perhaps you have wondered why I chose the pearls from Psalms we have considered over the last few days. The writer of Hebrews understood something about “timely words.” These pearls from Psalms that we have meditated upon were taken and strung together by the Hebrew writer. Reading through Hebrews 1:5,7,8-9,10-12, and 13 we see how he strung those passages together to help his readers understand the SUPREME SOVEREIGNTY AND ADEQUACY OF CHRIST. May He continue to be the highly exalted One in our life.

Pearls! (Part 6 of 7)
The psalmist wrote…
“The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’” (Psalm 110:1 ESV)
The Messiah’s position was one established by God and would need to be understood as such. The right hand position pointed to one who was highly exalted and given a place of supreme importance.
These figures of the Messiah are those associated with images of warfare. Though Jesus came as one meek (gentle) and lowly (Matthew 11:29) and was referred to as the Lamb of God (John 1:36), He was in no way weak.
Jesus is the One Who leads us in victory over evil and the challenge of sin in our own lives. We should find comfort in the truth that one day He will be shown victorious over all His enemies. May we thank God that the Battle is the Lord’s as we follow on with Him.

Pearls! (Part 5 of 7)
The psalmist wrote…
“(25) Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. (26) They will perish, BUT YOU WILL REMAIN; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, (27) BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS HAVE NO END.”
(Psalm 102:25-27 ESV)
The creation is a wondrous work of God. However, it was not destined to remain forever. Nonetheless, our GOD REMAINS. He remains the same and we can therefore know what to expect today and tomorrow. Jesus is also characterized as THE CONSTANT we can rely upon. (Hebrews 13:8)
We live in a changing world. Such tends to present us with many challenges. However, since our God and our Lord are UNCHANGING, we have a firm hope to which we can anchor our lives. May we continue to proclaim an unchanging Christ in a changing world.

“(6) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; (7) you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; “ (Psalm 45:6-7 ESV)
Governments and kingdoms; they rise and they fall. When this occurs there is much uncertainty for the citizenry as to what to expect for themselves regarding financial security, laws, freedoms, etc. But what an encouragement to know that GOD’S RULE STANDS FOREVER! His kingdom offers the STABILITY we need and we should know that we can always expect righteousness from Him. His Anointed One, our Lord Jesus Christ, is presently on the throne and we are living even now as citizens of His glorious kingdom. As we recognize our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), may we be at peace and rejoice in living under such righteous rule.

Pearls! (Part 3 of 7)
The psalmist wrote…
“he makes HIS MESSENGERS winds, his ministers a flaming fire.”
(Psalm 104:4 ESV)
GOD’S MESSENGERS have taken on whatever form was needed for the delivery of His message. Whatever God has needed to say has been conveyed. What is important for us to know, He provides the means of its knowledge. And this side of the cross, with a knowledge of what was prophesied, fulfilled, and de-mystified by the writing of the Apostles, we are very blessed. We also have the confirmed and written message of God in a means we can read every day.
We have been ENTRUSTED WITH THE GOSPEL OF JESUS. As Paul recognized himself as an ambassador for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), we too are to be involved in SPREADING THE WORD of Christ. Remember, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Romans 10:15b)

Pearls! (Part 2 of 7)
The psalmist wrote…
“I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “YOU ARE MY SON; today I have begotten you.” (Psalm 2:7 ESV)
What God decrees, stands! David, as king over God’s people, had enjoyed a FATHER/SON relationship with God. But the reference is also associated with the covenant God made with David regarding his son who would follow him on the throne. (2 Samuel 17:14) Here was one begotten of God and given the right to rule.
To be, ourselves, known as a CHILD OF GOD is the most wonderful relationship to possess. But the meaning of this Psalm went beyond a focus of David or Solomon to point to the Messiah, begotten of God and given authority to rule. The Messiah shared the Divine essence and fulfilled everything in accordance with the Father’s plan.
We can be greatly encouraged knowing that whatever God foretells He fulfills! It matters not how many hundreds of years spanned the time of this prophecy and the fulfillment of it. God does not forget what He has planned and He has the power to bring it about. And His desire is to renew His Divine essence even within us as HIS CHILDREN. (2 Peter 1:4) May we submit to Him that He may fulfill His great work in our own lives.

Pearls! (Part 1 of 7)
Pearls are found, each holding individual VALUE for their beauty, clarity, and size. Each pearl can be viewed as precious to behold and worthy of being possessed.
The Scriptures contain “pearl” after “pearl” of godly wisdom, encouragement, exhortation, and admonition. Each verse should be viewed as precious to behold and worthy of being possessed by the mind.
Jesus even referred to what one might do upon finding a pearl of great VALUE.
“(45) Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, (46) who, on finding ONE PEARL OF GREAT VALUE, went and SOLD ALL THAT HE HAD AND BOUGHT IT.” (Matthew 13:45-46 ESV)
Here was one who recognized VALUE. Do we rightfully acknowledge the things of God as being of more VALUE than anything else we possess? What characterizes our search for that which has such VALUE?
Every verse of God’s Word holds VALUE to be recognized. I invite you to join me over the next few days in considering several “pearls” from the Psalms.

Apostasy! (Part 6 of 6)
It has been stated that apostasy is only a generation away. We see it even in Israel’s history when a generation was raised up that knew not God.
(i.e. Judges 2:10; 1 Samuel 2:12) The importance of teaching God’s commands to the next generation was emphasized in association with the Old Law that came through Moses. (Deuteronomy 6:7) It is also emphasized in the New.
(Ephesians 6:4)
Teens reading this focus; you need to spend regular time reading God’s Word and using it as the authority for your choices and goal setting in life. Adults reading this focus; we need to be diligent in living as godly examples, revealing the wisdom and practical application of God’s Word in our daily lives while stressing and teaching verbally the importance of godly principles to the next generations. Apostasy can happen far too easily through either indifference or lack of diligence in this matter. A good education doesn’t just happen by accident.
The psalmist exhorted…
“How can a young man keep his way pure? BY GUARDING IT ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD. (10) WITH MY WHOLE HEART I SEEK YOU; let me not wander from your commandments! (11) I HAVE STORED UP YOUR WORD IN MY HEART, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:9-11) ESV)

Apostasy! (Part 5 of 6)
Paul, writing to Timothy, warned…
“(3) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, (4) and will turn away from listening to the truth and WANDER OFF INTO MYTHS.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)
The world is full of wanderers who easily turn aside to this thing or that. To meander through life without a definite cause, standard, or purpose leaves a big question regarding where one might end up. As some run from one teacher to another, so it is with ideas as well, leaving their lives filled with restless wandering in pursuit of another story. There are many strange ideas people flock to today and if life is not anchored in God’s Word there will be a continual drifting from one thing to another. May we continue to acknowledge and reveal to those around us that the real substance for life and eternity is connected to Christ.

Turning the back on the truth is an extremely dangerous step. What one will ultimately embrace can be anyone’s guess, because once the truth is turned away from there is nothing stable to which other ideas and teachings can be COMPARED or MEASURED.

Apostasy! (Part 3 of 6)
Paul, writing to Timothy, warned…
“(3) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears THEY WILL ACCUMULATE FOR THEMSELVES TEACHERS TO SUIT THEIR OWN PASSIONS, (4) and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)
Many are eager to find teachers who will teach what they want rather than what they NEED. We must be cautious regarding the teachers with which we surround ourselves. What we feed our mind (including the books we read and the people we listen to most) will greatly influence our life choices.
We must be as diligent as the Bereans who examined the Scriptures daily to make sure whether what they were being taught was true or not. (Acts 17:11) Remember, that was the Apostle Paul they were checking out. Continually checking the Scriptures is a personal safeguard and should even be appreciated by any honest and humble teacher of God’s Word.
In the political arena, in institutions of education, much of our media, and even in the “religious” sphere there is an excess of teachers to teach whatever anyone wants to hear. May we continue to look to God so that we can HEAR WHAT WE NEED to hear instead of merely what we want.

Apostasy! (Part 2 of 6)
Apostasy, if we are not on guard, can be but a few steps away.
Perhaps, in Paul’s warning, we can find four steps into apostasy. I have highlighted the first one above which I would like us to consider today.
Lord willing we will consider the others over the next few days.
I believe we would have to say, “The time has come.” Many people are not ENDURING SOUND TEACHING. They cannot endure that which they refuse to allow to convict them and change them, so they attempt to change the teaching or misrepresent it. Those who preach a message of toleration are often the most intolerant of the steadfast truth of God’s Word. And scores of individuals are not holding to that which really rings true. It appears there is a sense in which many have simply become bored with sound ideas and are hungering for something new; being all too eager to snap up the latest ideas of the day (note Acts 17:21), accepting just about every idea under the sun. We may consider some of these folks to be kooks. There are also those who simply refuse to accept authority or any idea that goes against their own personal desires. And yet others have just simply been cleverly deceived.
If we are not on our guard, we too can be deceived. (note Jesus’ warning in Matthew 24:24) The world has a way of making fine sounding arguments.
(Colossians 2:4) May we never tire of the SOUND TEACHING of Scripture so that our actions and words may continue to ring true in a world that is becoming more and more out of tune with the Will of God.

Apostasy! (Part 1 of 6)
Apostasy (the renunciation or departure from the teaching of God) can be just a few steps away if we are not watchful. Because of this, Paul gave Timothy the following charge.
“(1) I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: (2) PREACH THE WORD; BE READY IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON; REPROVE, REBUKE, AND EXHORT, WITH COMPLETE PATIENCE AND TEACHING.” (2 Timothy 4:1-2 ESV)
Timothy was to exercise great diligence in his ministry. The times demanded it. The established authority of Christ’s kingdom required it. And the reality of coming judgment necessitated it.
Peter also exhorted the need for a readiness to give an answer for the hope that we have in Christ. (1 Peter 3:15) Just as it was during the first century, our times demand it. There are many in despair who need to come to know the hope Christ offers. And the WORD OF TRUTH needs to be EXALTED because of all the other voices and ideologies sounding in our society today. How far will our society go with regard to the devaluing of life and the altering of God’s created design for family and relationships? We need to be civil. We need to SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE. (Ephesians 4:15) But we need to BE FIRM AND UNWAVERING when it comes to what God has declared.
As we deal with the issues of today we can refer to biological, sociological, psychological and historical evidence for upholding marriage and family as it should be. However, we must also help others understand it is essential to acknowledge the authority of God. The Creator of all life has spoken clearly as to what is right, provides benefit to humanity, and brings glory and praise to Him in whose image we were created. May we continue to EXALT HIS WORD.
Have a great day CONTINUING TO HOLD OUT THE WORD OF TRUTH!

Denial!
There are many in this world who are quick to deny just about anything.
People go into denial regarding sickness or life problems that really need to be acknowledged so they may be dealt with. There are those who deny truth or that there are any absolutes at all, and because of this the boundaries continue to be pushed further and further to accept almost anything in our society and even in the realm of religion. But at the very heart of all this is the failure to deny that which needs to be denied most!
Note what essential Jesus pointed out.
“(24) Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, LET HIM DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and follow me. (25) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.’” (Matthew 16:24-25 ESV)
The Greek translated “deny” is in the imperative. It is a must. The word means “to deny utterly.” The phrase could be literally translated, “let one thoroughly deny”. It is SELF which needs to be denied most! I know when I have the most difficulty is when SELF is allowed to be in the way. My desires and plans are not always what they ought to be. I must always remember that when I was united with Christ I died to SELF so that I could live for Him!
To refuse to deny SELF will cause us to continue to have difficulties and can ultimately put us in grave danger. The rich young ruler was not willing to deny SELF. He would not part with his wealth. (Matthew 19:22) Many of the chief priests and Pharisees would not deny SELF. They rejected Jesus as the long awaited Messiah, fearing the Romans would come and take away both their place and nation. (John 11:47-48) Felix waited for a more convenient time. (Acts 24:25) What we need to do is deny SELF and make the time for God and what He desires us to do. Agrippa was “almost persuaded”
(Acts 26:28), but when we refuse to deny SELF we will always fall short of where God wants us.
Thoroughly deny SELF! This is a paramount step we must take as we follow our Lord. We must trust Him enough to know that by dying to SELF and living for Him we will gain the highest possible blessings we could ever desire for SELF. May we seek God’s help in keeping SELF out of the way as we continue to walk in His WAY.
Have a great day FINDING OUR LIFE GOD’S WAY!

From Glory to Glory!
As we noted yesterday, Jesus became poor that we might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9) He emptied Himself and submitted to death on a cross in order to provide the fullness of God’s blessings for us. However, this is not just a “riches to poverty” story. The story of our Lord is actually a “riches to rags and back to riches” story. Once Jesus completed all He came to do, His exalted position was COMPLETELY RESTORED (Philippians 2:9-11) with everything under His authority. (Ephesians 1:20-22)
John recorded a prayer Jesus prayed prior to His going with His disciples to the garden where He was betrayed and arrested. Note a statement Jesus made in the first part of that prayer.
“(4) I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. (5) And now, Father, GLORIFY ME IN YOUR OWN PRESENCE WITH THE GLORY THAT I HAD WITH YOU BEFORE THE WORLD EXISTED.” (John 17:4-5 ESV)
We must guard against merely viewing Jesus according to the flesh. (2 Corinthians 5:16) He has been exalted on high. He is seated at the right hand of God in eternal glory. He is on the throne and His Sovereignty is eternal. He is glorified as Lord above all. His Name is above all names.
What He emptied Himself of (Philippians 2:7) has been taken back in its fullness. His glory has been COMPLETELY RESTORED and He desires to share that glory with those who are His. (Romans 8:17; Colossians 3:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:14) May we continue to give Him the praise He is due.
Have a great day LIVING LIFE LINKED TO THE GRAND STORY OF JESUS!

For Our Benefit!
A wealthy man, questioned regarding the source of his success, responded, “I owe it all to determination, good planning, hard work, and the one million dollars I inherited from my uncle.”
We may enjoy “rags to riches” stories of how individuals were able to move from poverty to wealth through strong will and perseverance. Then there are the sad stories of those who have gone from riches to rags. However, there is the story of one who willingly went from riches to poverty for our benefit.
As Paul encouraged the Corinthian brethren to give generously with regard to the collection for needy saints in Judea, he pointed to the most generous one whoever walked the face of this earth.
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that THOUGH HE WAS RICH, yet for your sake HE BECAME POOR, SO THAT YOU BY HIS POVERTY MIGHT BECOME RICH.” (2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV)
Even to benefit others, there is usually only so much people are willing to give up for others. But when Jesus came to earth, taking on the flesh of humanity, He “made himself nothing” (Philippians 2:7) or rather (as the Greek more literally reads), He “emptied” Himself. Do we have a genuine sense of appreciation for what Jesus gave up in order to ENRICH us with every spiritual blessing that is ours in Him? (Ephesians 1:3) Jesus gave up the glories of heaven to come where He had no place to call his own. (Matthew 8:20) He, once exalted on high, humbly submitted to death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8) The creator of life (John 1:3) and provider of eternal life, gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to ENRICH our lives. Jesus emptied Himself to lavish upon us the immeasurable riches of His grace. (Ephesians 1:7-8; 2:7)
From riches to poverty so that we could go from poverty to being richly blessed. What an awesome Savior we have. But that is not all there is to this story. Lord willing we shall note the rest of the story tomorrow.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE WEALTH WE HAVE IN CHRIST!

Looking Good!
The new house that has been being built across the street from our church building is getting close to completion. From the outside it looks just about finished, but more work is still needed within.
Outside we may look good, but what is going on inside? Are the walls in place and the rooms set up to serve their purpose? Is the wiring complete and the lighting in place? Is our life truly a SUITABLE DWELLING for the Spirit of God? (Romans 8:11)
Note Jesus’ rebuke toward some of the religious elite of that day.
“(27) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which OUTWARDLY APPEAR BEAUTIFUL, BUT WITHIN ARE FULL OF DEAD PEOPLE’S BONES AND ALL UNCLEANNESS. (28) So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, BUT WITHIN you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” (Matthew 23:27-28 ESV)
Jesus did not mince words. He called it like it was. He had the ability to see the true condition within. (John 2:25) And though our exterior finish my appear great to the world, we must be mindful of the finishing work within. Are we in need of some home improvement? May we strive to make our life a SUITABLE DWELLING place to the glory of God. What better company could we desire?
Have a great day LIVING AS A HOLY HABITATION FOR GOD.

Keep Building!
A new house has been going up across the street from our church building. I remember when the foundation work first began. The area was dug out, the forms for the foundation were set up, rebar was put in place, the concrete was poured into the forms, and then the forms were removed. The foundation was then ready for building to take place according to the blueprint prepared. But what would I have thought if, once the foundation was prepared, the builder again laid a foundation? What would the people having the house built have thought if the builder continued to work on the foundation, but never began building upon it? Can you imagine one returning to lay foundation after foundation after foundation? The EXPECTATION was for a house to be built once the foundation was in place. That does not mean the foundation is not important or should cease to exist, but the foundation is a first step toward further building.
The Hebrew writer rebuked his readers for a lack of progress in spiritual growth. (Hebrews 5:11-14) There was much he wanted to say, but they were not ready for it. There had been a foundation laid, but they apparently kept relaying foundation rather than moving on to maturity. They were still in need of basic principles. (Hebrews 5:12)
The writer of Hebrews exhorted his readers…
“(1) Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, NOT LAYING AGAIN A FOUNDATION OF REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS AND OF FAITH TOWARD GOD, (2) and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.” (Hebrews
6:1-2 ESV)
It was not that these things ceased to be important. They stood as a foundation for the building up of their lives. In fact, a spirit of repentance must be maintained. However, the things repented of when they first turned in faith to God were not to be returned to. Instead the Hebrew writer exhorted them to continue growing up in their faith to maturity in Christ. And the elementary truths they had been taught were to remain in place as they moved on to deeper truths relating to Christ, Christian living, and worship.
We do need to be careful how we build, but the EXPECTATION is for building to take place. May we continue to practice the word of righteousness so as to be able to have proper discernment between good and evil. In this way we will be enabled to steadily grow on toward maturity in Christ.
Have a great day CONTINUING TO GROW UP IN CHRIST.

Forever Young!
The only cure for growing old is death. Each day that comes adds age to life and it seems the older we get the faster the time flies by.
Someone has stated, “Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
There is some truth to that statement. Besides the wonderful time spent in Bible discussion with teens at camp, one of the other highlights of working with our Senior Teen Bible camp each year is that the time shared together always makes me feel a bit younger. The acceptance I have experienced has in many ways seemed to ignore the distance of years between their age and mine.
When one is able to hold onto a SENSE OF YOUTH there appears to be a feeling of extra freshness and vigor which can contribute a lot to a desire for living. And there is a sense in which Jesus urged us to not completely let go of our YOUTH.
Jesus exhorted…
“(2) And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them (3) and said, “Truly, I say to you, UNLESS YOU TURN AND BECOME LIKE CHILDREN, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (4) Whoever HUMBLES HIMSELF LIKE THIS CHILD is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:2-4 ESV)
Among the characteristics of YOUTH we may note eagerness to learn, the possession of an enthusiasm for life, greater hopefulness or optimism, the humility Jesus mentioned, zest for life, the recognition of the need for some guidance, etc. Though there is the need to mature, there are still some qualities which should not be outgrown. Those of you who are teens are not as far removed from some of these natural characteristics as those who through the passing of years become less enthused about living because of life’s stresses or begin to develop a sense of self-sufficiency or hardness toward life. There are qualities of a child we should seek to retain.
May we each, regardless of age, continue to seek to retain a YOUTHFUL state of mind in the ways that will be pleasing to God. Such an approach to living will enable us to keep our life open to properly responding to His Will. It will also contribute a greater sense of spiritual energy toward God ’s cause.
Have a great day LIVING EXUBERANTLY AS GOD’S CHILD!

Won't Be Missed!
One of the things I enjoy associated with the CELEBRATION of July 4 in this country is the commercial fireworks displays. There have been times we have watched a local display while being able to see others taking place off in the distance. The bright flashes of color that sparkle, spiral, or spread out like fingers across the sky are eye-catching displays of pyrotechnics.
People gather in large crowds to watch these displays while oohing and ahing at the sight. Some of these shows are even accompanied by music with the blasts and flashes being programmed to occur in time with the beat.
As much as we might enjoy a flashing and thunderous fireworks display, such awesome spectacles across the sky are nothing compared to a glorious event which will someday take place. It will be an event which will most definitely be eye-catching. It will be a happening which will not be missed.
And for those who are ready it will be a time for great CELEBRATION.
Jesus, knowing there would be attempts to deceive people (Matthew 24:23-26), referred to His return in these words.
“For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, SO WILL BE THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN.” (Matthew 24:27 ESV)
Oh, what an awesome display that is going to be. And Jesus implied that wherever anyone was it would be within view. It is an event that will also most likely be accompanied by great songs of praise to our Deliverer and Savior Jesus Christ. May we be mindful of living each day in preparation for when that time might be as we continue to hold out the message of hope in Christ to those around us.
Have a great day JOYFULLY ANTICIPATING THE GRANDEST CELEBRATION!

Freedom and Glory!
Today, July 4, is celebrated as Independence Day in our country. It is a day to focus on freedom. It is one of those days of the year when “OLD GLORY” (our flag -- the Stars And Stripes) is flown by many with pride.
People glory in light of the freedoms we enjoy. There are glorious aspects of life in this country that are cherished. Some glory in having been a part of making a stand to safeguard the freedoms we enjoy. Such individuals should be honored and the valor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives should be remembered. However, as there is a higher freedom God has provided, there is also a GREATER GLORY to experience.
Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul acknowledge the glory associated with the coming of the old covenant, as well as the glory associated with Moses. (2 Corinthians 3:12) There were some awesome displays of glory associated with Moses having been in the presence of God. Nevertheless, that glory has been eclipsed by the GREATER GLORY (2 Corinthians 3:8 & 11) associated with our Lord’s having come to earth and the hope of eternal life offered in Him.
Paul encouraged…
“(17) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, THERE IS FREEDOM. (18) And we all, with unveiled face, BEHOLDING THE GLORY OF THE LORD, ARE BEING TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE FROM ONE DEGREE OF GLORY TO ANOTHER. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:17-18 ESV)
With the coming of Christ came the coming of a NEW GLORY. And in Christ we are provided the means of sharing our Lord’s GLORY in increasing measure.
That GREATER GLORY is shared in our becoming more and more like Him. May we continue to allow that GLORIOUS TRANSFORMATION to continue as we walk on in life with Jesus.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY SHARED GLORY IN CHRIST!

Freedom's Framework!
Tomorrow in our country is celebrated as Independence Day. It is a day commemorating the gaining of official independence from the rule of England in 1776. However, freedom independent from guidelines, laws, regulations, and rules opens the door for chaos. Though freedom can be cherished and enjoyed it must still be viewed within LIMITATIONS.
Paul exhorted…
“(13) For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only DO NOT USE YOUR FREEDOM AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FLESH, but through love serve one another.
(14) For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Galatians 5:13-14 ESV)
Just because the blood of Jesus has the power to cleanse us should not be taken as freedom to do whatever we want and let His blood deal with it.
(note Romans 6:1-2, 15-18) Though the grace of God is powerful and sufficient for our salvation it is not to be viewed as “license” (Jude 4
NIV) to sin. Such living takes grace for granted and reveals a lack of appreciation for what has been made possible through the sacrifice of Christ. The grace of God is intended to train us to “renounce” (ESV) or “say ‘NO’” (NIV) to ungodliness and to worldly passions. (Titus 2:11-12)
Though we have the freedom to choose, we must make our choices with the warning of the Hebrew writer in mind.
“(26) For IF WE GO ON SINNING DELIBERATELY after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, (27) but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.” (Hebrews 10:26-27 ESV)
With freedom comes responsibility; responsibility to make wise choices and exercise restraint and self-control. In this country we can best enjoy our freedoms within the CONSTRAINTS of the U.S. Constitution as well as federal, state, and local laws. As Christians, we also can enjoy our freedoms within the LIMITATIONS of God’s commands. All He has provided through the teaching of His Word is for our greatest benefit. May we genuinely appreciate the freedom and the framework He has provided for living in it.
Have a great day GUIDED BY GOD’S GRACE!

Free Citizens!
I enjoy living in a free country. Here in the United States of America we have FREEDOMS not all enjoy in other places of the world. We have the FREEDOM to speak our convictions either verbally or in print. When we vote, we have the FREEDOM to mark our ballots according to our convictions. We enjoy the FREEDOM to worship according to the authority of the Scriptures without government intervention. And though we may feel at times these FREEDOMS are being threatened to one degree or another, they are presently FREEDOMS we do possess.
Though the above mentioned FREEDOMS (as well as others) are guaranteed by our Constitution, just living in this country does not mean complete FREEDOM. There are still those who would like to experience FREEDOM from poverty or to be able to be debt FREE. Others desire FREEDOM from pain they are having to endure. There are also those who desire FREEDOM from oppressive relationships. And the list goes on. Perhaps you can think of some other specific area where you do not have the FREEDOM you desire.
However, are we able to feel blessed by the FREEDOMS we do enjoy?
Enjoying a sense of FREEDOM is a cherished thing. Nevertheless, as great and wonderful as any of the above mentioned FREEDOMS might be there is a greater need mankind has often been too slow to recognize. The greatest oppression mankind faces is that of sin. In fact it appears the very FREEDOM this country offers has done a lot to allow sin to flourish. The real challenge is that many don’t recognize how enslaved or oppressed they are by sin.
Jesus came to provide us with the greatest FREEDOM available. As citizens in His kingdom we are able to enjoy a sense of FREEDOM no earthly government can ever provide. It is a FREEDOM that can be gained even by those living under the authority of an oppressive government.
Paul encouraged…
“(1) There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life has SET YOU FREE IN CHRIST JESUS FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.” (Romans 8:1-2 ESV)
In Christ we have FREEDOM from sin, from death (eternal separation from God), and the wrath of God we would otherwise be under. This is a FREEDOM which ought to fill us with a great sense of peace as well as thanksgiving to the One Who has secured it for us. It is FREEDOM established much earlier than 1776. Nearly two thousand years ago Jesus went to the cross to make it possible to free us from the bondage to sin. He is the One who has powerfully provided the removal of condemnation for those who become united with Him.
There may be some worldly FREEDOMS we will never enjoy. However, let us be sure we have sought out the greatest FREEDOM we could possibly experience. It is a FREEDOM bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Competing
Displayed on fireplace mantles, shelves, walls, and window sills are certificates, plaques, ribbons, and trophies awarded to those who have competed in various competitions. These items are displayed with pride and sometimes find themselves at the center of conversation with guests.
Particularly desirable for prominent display are those awarded for first place? That is THE PLACE for which fierce competition occurs. It is THE PLACE many desire to be noted for. However, when such a competitive spirit enters the spiritual arena, things are not as God desires them to be. When rivalry and maneuvering for position are exhibited in the church, division and unrest begin to occur rather than edification, unity, and the experience of sweet fellowship. We must always bear in mind the number one position belongs to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Then our position with one another must also be properly considered.
Hanging in my office where I can easily see it from my desk is a THIRD PLACE ribbon. Perhaps such would not generally be as prominently displayed as a blue one given for first place. However, this ribbon hangs as a reminder of my place. Many years ago the word “JOY” became known to me to represent putting Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last. Viewing Jesus and others from this perspective places me in THIRD PLACE. I purchased the THIRD PLACE ribbon for myself to remind me of THE PLACE I am to be mindful of holding in daily life. [Note: this THIRD PLACE ribbon idea was shared with me a few months ago by our oldest son who preaches in Scappoose, Oregon. He used THIRD PLACE ribbons as a reminder for the congregation there as he preached a sermon on this subject.]
Jesus’ disciples struggled with this concept as they had a desire for greatness. (i.e. Mark 9:33-35; Mark 10:35-45; Luke 22:24-27) However, note what position Jesus emphasized as well as exemplified Himself.
“(42) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, ‘You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. (43) But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, (44) and WHOEVER WOULD BE FIRST AMONG YOU MUST BE SLAVE OF ALL. (45) For EVEN THE SON OF MAN CAME not to be served but TO SERVE, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’” (Mark 10:42-45 ESV)
According to Jesus, the greatest position is that of a servant. It is to be considerate of what can be done for others rather than what can solely be gained for self. That is THE PLACE followers of Christ are to take.
Paul addressed the focus this way:
“(3) Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (4) Let EACH OF YOU LOOK NOT ONLY TO HIS OWN INTERESTS, BUT ALSO TO THE INTERESTS OF OTHERS.” (Philippians
2:3-4 ESV)
THIRD PLACE is THE PLACE we are to humbly accept. It is THE PLACE by which we will be able to glorify God as we offer our lives in service to others and in service to His Will. I might suggest you purchase one of these ribbons. (Mine only cost me a dollar which is not much for a visual reminder of the greatest position we can hold in this life.) Hang it where you will see it every day. Use it in your Bible for a bookmark. Let it be a reminder of the position of true greatness our Lord lived and called us to follow in.
And should you feel a twinge of competitiveness, may it be for the position of being one of the greatest servants of all.
Have a great day ENJOYING THE GREATNESS OF SERVITUDE!
Carl
