Appetite!
It is been noted that people work to eat and eat to work. Such a focus may not point to much in the way of meaningful purpose for living, but in a sense it is true. One must work in order to have an income from which to purchase food to sustain the life. The food consumed in turn provides the energy and strength necessary to continue to work to provide more food, and on and on it goes.
Solomon acknowledged…
“A WORKER’S APPETITE WORKS FOR HIM; HIS MOUTH URGES HIM ON.”
( Proverbs 16:26 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads: “ It is good for workers to have an appetite; an empty stomach drives them on.”
HUNGER can be a great power in driving one to seek work in order to get the food necessary for satisfying the hunger. We see people from time to time holding signs reading “Will Work For Food!” and some of them really mean it. An appetite can be very strong motivation and the right foods bring ultimate benefit and satisfaction.
Are we motivated by a HUNGERING? Are we seeking to satisfy that HUNGER in a proper manner? When the disciples returned from Sychar (a city in
Samaria) after having gone to buy food ( John 4:8), Jesus mentioned He had food to eat of which they did not know. The disciples then began to wonder if someone else had brought Him food. ( John 4:31-33)
We read…
“Jesus said to them, ‘MY FOOD IS TO DO THE WILL OF HIM WHO SENT ME AND TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WORK.” ( John 4:34 ESV)
Our Lord had an appetite for the Will of the Father. His actions, His teaching, His whole ministry on earth was driven by that appetite. And that appears to have strengthened Him to press on regardless of what He had to face. The same can be true with us as we diligently seek the Will of God and all that is right in accordance with His Will.
Jesus encouraged…
“Blessed are those who HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS, for they shall be satisfied.” ( Matthew 5:6 ESV)
Are we being driven by such a HUNGER? Have we come to experience how even works done to the glory of God can bring life giving nourishment and satisfaction to our souls? Such a focus can energize us to press on in all that is right in the eyes of God. It is an appetite that will work for us rather than against us. May we truly HUNGER after fulfilling His Will in our life so that we can receive the blessing of being completely and eternally satisfied by Him.
Have a great day DRIVEN BY AN APPETITE FOR GOD’S WILL!
