Place of Birth!

Place of birth is something many people take pride in, not wanting to forget their roots. Though people who have moved to this country from other nations may love living here, they still may talk with pride regarding their place of birth. Many born in this country are proud and thankful for being born U.S. citizens and may love to say, “I was born here.” How do we focus on our place of birth: our country, state, or even birth town? Does it have special meaning to us? Is there any sense of pride associated with the remembrance?

In the Psalms we read the following connection to Zion, the city of God; Jerusalem, the place where God’s temple had been built and His people would assemble.
“(5) And of Zion it shall be said, ‘THIS ONE AND THAT ONE WERE BORN IN HER’; for the Most High himself will establish her. (6) The Lord records as he registers the peoples, ‘THIS ONE WAS BORN THERE.’ Selah” (Psalm 87:5-6
ESV)

As there developed a great sense of pride in being born a Jew, this was especially so with those associated with God’s holy city. There was an extreme specialness regarding this place and that was the way God intended it to be because the special relationship was not just with a city, but with the God Whose Name was there. It was also to God’s glory that others would take note of such. (Psalm 87:4)

As John began introducing the Messiah in his Gospel, he stated…
“(12) But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, HE GAVE THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD, (13) WHO WERE BORN, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but OF GOD.” (John
1:12-13 ESV)

There is the place of birth which matters. It is not of what country, but rather being BORN OF GOD that should provide us with a great sense of abiding specialness. As Christians, let us not forget our roots in Christ through Whom it has been made possible for us to be called children of God!
May we live in a way that others will also begin to recognize that we have truly been BORN OF GOD!

Have a great day CONTINUING TO LIVE ROOTED IN CHRIST!

What Are The Chances?

Often when society faces challenges, the first solution offered is to provide more education; educate society (whether children, teens or adults) and they will make WISE choices. Education is important and does work with some, but I have been amazed at how much money has been poured into educating regarding such things as alcohol, drugs, smoking, teen sex, etc., only to have it fall on deaf ears. Regardless of how good the education program and the information it provides may be, it appears there will always be those who WILL NOT LEARN.

Zophar, one of Jobs friends, made the following statement.
“BUT A STUPID MAN WILL GET UNDERSTANDING WHEN A WILD DONKEY’S COLT IS BORN A MAN!” (Job 11:12 ESV)

To me Zophar’s assertion appears to be one of those “when hell freezes over” statements. He seemed to imply it ain’t gonna happen! As long as people think they can figure it all out themselves they will be as those Paul described in his letter to the church at Rome who, while claiming to be wise, became fools. (Romans 1:22) We must remain humble and WISE ENOUGH TO LOOK TO GOD for the guidance and instruction we need. It is important to look beyond ourselves; beyond our own understanding and wisdom. It is stupid to rely upon ourselves or even the wisdom of the world. The world’s wisdom is what has kept many from knowing God (1 Corinthians 1:20-21) and accepting Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:8) Relying on our own wisdom is not a chance we should want to take!

What are the chances of a wild donkey’s colt being born a man? What are the chances of getting to heaven without properly acknowledging the Lord and His Will? It ain’t gonna happen. (note Matthew 7:21-23) We must bear in mind and help others see that it is His Way or no way!

Jesus came to take the “chance” out of being saved. Therefore, let us continue to acknowledge Him as the Way, the Truth, the Life, and the only access to the Father. (John 14:6) Following Jesus and allowing Him to be the Lord of our life will provide us with the assurance of hope and eternal salvation.

Have a great day WISELY WALKING WITH THE LORD!

On The Mat (part 6) Endurance!

Before we leave this focus on wrestling in prayer, there is one more element we need to bear in mind.

E N D U R A N C E !

There is a coach in wrestling. There is also a team. However, the competition on the mat depends most on the individual performance. Though the coach trains and encourages and the team-mates shout and cheer during the match, the wrestler is out there on the mat grappling alone with the opponent. And we are not talking “tag-team” wrestling here. The wrestler’s individual skills must be developed and conditioning must be maintained so as to have the ENDURANCE necessary to compete. Three 3 minute rounds may not seem like a long time unless you are the one out there on the mat. The wrestler must keep pushing. To relax gives the opponent the opportunity to gain control.

In our Christian walk, there are times we find ourselves taking a stand alone (though God is with us). There are times when we have to put everything we have into a situation to remain standing. There are times we may not be able to count on the relief or aid of other human beings. How do we stand at those times? Have we developed the ENDURANCE required to do so?

We must persevere in prayer as Paul encouraged the Thessalonian
brethren: “pray continually”. (I Thessalonians 5:17 NIV)

We must also persevere in the focus and study of God’s Word in order to maintain the endurance necessary to keep pressing on to victory.
“(4) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that THROUGH ENDURANCE and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (5) May the GOD WHO GIVES ENDURANCE and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, (6) so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:4-6 NIV)

Have a great day CONDITIONED to keep on keeping on!

On The Mat (part 5) The "Pin"

The focus on the “PIN” as we wrestle in prayer could be stated like
this: Lord, I know that the victory is mine because you are with me. I struggle when I feel I can do it on my own. Help me keep in mind how much I need You, Your power, and Your coaching in order to gain the victory.

Some talk about fighting to the death, but we press on as Christ will ultimately destroy that last enemy.
“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” (I Corinthians 15:26 NIV)

And so we look to Christ who brings about the victory.
“(54) When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come
true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” (55) “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Corinthians 15:54-57 NIV)

And by faith we are numbered among those who overcome!
“(3) This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, (4) for everyone born of God OVERCOMES the world. This is the VICTORY that has OVERCOME the world, even OUR FAITH. (5) Who is it that OVERCOMES the world? Only HE WHO BELIEVES that Jesus is the Son of God.” (I John 5:3-5 NIV)

Press on to PIN! Press on to WIN! As we wrestle on in faith, may we PIN the fear that keeps us from boldly proclaiming the truth. May we PIN the old self with its practices that the new self in Christ may continue to live and glorify Him. May we PIN the selfish interests that God’s Will may be done in our daily lives.

Have a great day WRESTLING VICTORIOUSLY in Christ!

On The Mat (part 4) The "Take Down"

The “TAKE DOWN” connected to our wrestling in prayer might be expressed this way: Lord, I seize the moment for you. I will take hold of today to serve and to glorify you. Rather than the flesh controlling I will allow your Spirit to take control. With your power I will take captive every thought and make it obedient to you.

When we ESCAPE, then we are ready for the “TAKE DOWN.”

The Hebrew writer encouraged:
“God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who HAVE FLED to TAKE HOLD of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.” (Hebrews 6:18 NIV)

With our lives no longer under the control of the flesh, but rather under the control of the Spirit, we can TAKE HOLD of the abundant life (John
10:10) Jesus came to make possible.

Paul encouraged Timothy regarding the rich...
“(18) Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. (19) In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may TAKE HOLD of the life that is TRULY LIFE.” (I Timothy 6:18-19 NIV)

With the help of God we can then gain control of life in a way that glorifies God and thus ultimately brings benefit to ourselves and to others whom our lives touch.
“(3) It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; (4) that each of you should LEARN TO CONTROL his own body IN A WAY THAT IS HOLY AND HONORABLE, (5) not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;” (I Thessalonians 4:3-5 NIV)

As we wrestle with the control of our thinking, Paul pointed to the way in which we need to allow God’s Word to work within us.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we TAKE CAPTIVE every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV)

Have a great day maintaining CONTROL by the power of God’s Spirit.

On The Mat (part 3) The "Escape!"

The wrestling in prayer regarding our “ESCAPE” may be expressed this
way: Lord, I struggle with those things and desires which try to bind and hold me back. Deliver me from temptation. Lead me in Your way. When faced with temptation, help me to see, trust, and use the way out You promise to provide.

For those familiar with wrestling, the ESCAPE logically follows the STAND UP. We don’t ESCAPE by sitting. We don’t escape by staying where we are. We must move away from whatever we are ESCAPING in order to break free.

Paul admonished Timothy:
“FLEE the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
(2 Timothy 2:22 NIV)

God has provided the means for ESCAPE:
“(3) His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (4) Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and ESCAPE THE CORRUPTION in the world caused by evil desires.” ( 2 Peter 1:3-4
NIV)

As God provides the way we need to go for it. The longer we remain the stronger the grip by which we will be held. As Paul encouraged:
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, HE WILL ALSO PROVIDE A WAY OUT so that you can stand up under it.” (I Corinthians 10:13 NIV)

The way is there. Will we choose it? Will we use it? May we continue to see, trust, and use the means of ESCAPE our Lord provides. He gave Himself for us that we might be FREE.

Have a great day ESCAPING into the freedom God provides.

On The Mat (part 2) The "Standup"

The “STAND UP” in life may be expressed this way: Lord, give me strength to remain firm and faithful. Help me to get up and give me the strength to stand for that which is right.

The “STAND UP” is crucial. Time in prayer is of the utmost importance.
However, we are not to spend all our life down on our knees. The time comes for us to move from prayer to action. The time comes for us to stand for, and upon, God’s principles. In our prayers we may find ourselves wrestling as we acknowledge the lack of strength and courage to boldly stand up for that which is right. But let us pray. Let us pray in faith. And then let us stand knowing we are not standing alone.

We need to trust in God’s provision to help us STAND.
“(10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. (11) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your STAND against the devil’s schemes. (12) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (13) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to STAND YOUR GROUND, and after you have done everything, to STAND. (14) STAND FIRM then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, (15) and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. (16) In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (17) Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (18) And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”
(Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV)

So what shall we do?
“Therefore, my dear brothers, STAND FIRM. Let nothing move you.
Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (I Corinthians 15:58 NIV)

Remember the passage which kicked off this series referred to Epaphras wrestling in prayer for those at Colosse that they would “...STAND FIRM IN ALL THE WILL OF GOD, mature and fully assured.” (Colossians 4:12 NIV)

Have a great day STANDING on and for the Will Of God!

On The Mat! (part 1)

Yesterday we noted Paul’s reference to a WRESTLER in his letter to the church at Colosse:
“Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. HE IS ALWAYS WRESTLING IN PRAYER for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.” (Colossians 4:12 NIV)

Another aspect of the WRESTLING in prayer is that for ourselves. In what ways could we picture the continuing WRESTLING MATCH in which we are involved? Do you see yourself there on the mat in prayer? Over the next few days we will consider and mediate on this praying in the terms of WRESTLING.
T H E “ R E V E R S A L ”

The “REVERSAL” in life may be expressed this way: Lord, I repent of my sin! I turn from those things that are out of place with the Christian life and turn to follow you. Sin will no longer master me, but with your help, sin will be mastered.

Note the words of Peter:
“REPENT, then, and TURN TO GOD, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,” (Acts 3:19 NIV)

Note also God’s warning to Cain:
“(6) Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? (7) If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but YOU MUST MASTER IT.”” (Genesis 4:6-7 NIV)

Cain wrestled and lost. God wants us to wrestle and win!

Do you wrestle in prayer over those things you do which you don’t want to do and over those things you don’t do that you know you ought? In prayer we need to keep committing ourselves to repentance and the changing of those things which are out of place in our lives. There needs to continue to be a reversal from being controlled by the flesh to being controlled by the Spirit of God. With His help we can gain the victory!

Have a great day MASTERING sin through the power of Christ!

Wrestling!

In Paul’s letter to the church at Colosse referred to one who was a WRESTLER.

“Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. HE IS ALWAYS WRESTLING IN PRAYER for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.” (Colossians 4:12 NIV)

Do we find ourselves WRESTLING in prayer for others? If we have a genuine concern for others this would be a picture of part of our prayer time. It is difficult to understand what keeps some from accepting the Way of God. Sometimes we struggle with what keeps others away from the fellowship of the church. After all, if there is an attachment to the HEAD
(Christ) there ought to be an attachment to the BODY (the church). [Note John’s association of fellowship with Christ and each other in I John 1:7.] Then there is the struggle of what to say or do to influence others.
Sometimes in prayer we may WRESTLE with a sense of frustration and the temptation to even give up on some. And so the WRESTLING continues as the heart pains for the spiritual (and physical) needs of others.

A great deal depends on the heart of others. As we struggle in prayer for them, may we look to God for courage and wisdom to find a way to touch them.

Have a great day WRESTLING with endurance on behalf of others.

Perseverance! (Part 5 of 5)

Persevering! How do we do it? What can we focus on to maintain the fortitude necessary to keep on keeping on in the midst of trials and conflict in this corrupt world? We have considered the following keys:

#1 -- Remember we are not alone!
#2 -- Remember our eternal Father is in it for the long haul!
#3 -- Develop a deep commitment to our convictions!
And now...

#4 -- NEVER FORGET THE FINAL OUTCOME OF THE BATTLE IS VICTORY IN CHRIST!

It is easy to get discouraged when we focus on all the “stuff” going on in this world. There are so many things which may make us wonder why others don’t see the folly of their ways. How can we stand, and how is it all going to work out, when so many want to live contrary to God’s Way? Are we defeated? Have we reached a point where we feel we might as well give in to the ways of the world? Is it a “no win” situation we are now in?

Well, I cheated. I turned to the end of the book and you know what I found out? We win!

It was a young shepherd boy who said so well what remains true today:
“...THE BATTLE IS THE LORD’S” (I Samuel 17:47 NIV).

Oh, there may be some skirmishes lost, but ultimately truth and all on the side of truth will prevail. So if you ever feel you have fought and found yourself bailing out, return to the Commander and ask Him to lift you up again. And along with Paul, may we declare...
“...I am not ashamed, because I KNOW whom I have believed, and AM CONVINCED that HE IS ABLE to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12 NIV)

Jesus warned, but promised:
“(12) Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, (13) but he who stands firm to the end WILL BE SAVED.” (Matthew
24:12-13 NIV)

Let us persevere, knowing our Lord is leading us onto ultimate victory!
We don’t know when the end will come, but many are looking to the end with great fear! In Christ we should look to the end with great anticipation because the victory is ours in the Lord. The battle is the Lord’s and He will bring the victory!

Have a great day SHARING THE VICTORY in Christ!

Perseverance! (Part 4 of 5)

Persevering! How do we do it? What can we focus on to maintain the fortitude necessary to keep on keeping on in the midst of trials and conflict in this corrupt world? We have considered the ideas of remembering we are not alone and remembering how our God is in it with us for the long haul. Today we will consider number three:

#3 -- DEVELOP A DEEP COMMITMENT TO OUR CONVICTIONS.

It has been expressed that if we stand for nothing we will stand for anything. It doesn’t take much looking at our society today to see where that reality has gotten us.

We must be convicted by the truth of God’s word and the need for allowing God to use us in whatever role He desires. This should spring from the realization of all God has done, is doing, and has promised to provide for us. Peter and John, when told by the Sanhedrin to cease their teaching in the Name of Jesus, were too convicted by the truth to even consider the warnings against them (Acts 4:20). Paul felt the compelling power of Christ’
s love driving him in his ministry (I Cor. 9:16; 2 Cor. 5:14).

Paul, writing to the church in Rome, stated:
“(6) God “will give to each person according to what he has done.”
(7) To those who by PERSISTENCE IN DOING GOOD seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. (8) But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.” (Romans 2:6-8 NIV)

God has given us a standard by which to live. He has given us truth upon which to build our lives. What does it mean to us? Do we take it all seriously? Where our convictions rest will determine our usefulness to the Lord as well as our ability to stand firm in the truth.

Have a great day COMMITTED to the Will and Word of God!

Perseverance! (Part 3 of 5)

Persevering! How do we do it? What can we focus on to maintain the fortitude necessary to keep on keeping on in the midst of trials and conflict in this corrupt world? Yesterday we considered the idea of remembering we are not alone. Here is something else for us to keep in mind.

#2 -- REMEMBER OUR ETERNAL FATHER IS IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL.

God has always been providing the encouragement, the direction, and the means to carry out His will in order to move His followers in the direction He desires. Paul encouraged the Philippians brethren with these words:
“(4) In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy (5) because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, (6) being confident of this, that HE WHO BEGAN A GOOD WORK IN YOU WILL CARRY IT ON TO COMPLETION until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:4-6 NIV)

Paul also reminded the Philippian brethren:
“for it is GOD who WORKS IN YOU to will and to act ACCORDING TO HIS GOOD PURPOSE.” (Philippians 2:13 NIV)

God has not quit! In spite of the direction of man in the world, God has not given up on His plan of salvation. And He continues to work in and through us to fulfill His purposes.

Have a great day allowing God to continue HIS PURPOSES in and through your life!

Perseverance! (Part 2 of 5)

Persevering! How do we do it? What can we focus on to maintain the fortitude necessary to keep on keeping on in the midst of trials and conflict in this corrupt world?

#1 -- REMEMBER WE ARE NOT ALONE!

Consider God’s track record throughout the Scriptures. What does it tell us about God? When I consider all the times God encouraged Israel, most often it was by reminding them He would not leave them. If the nation remained obedient He would be right there fighting their battles for them (i.e. Ex. 14:14; Deut. 1:30; 3:22; 20:4). God never asked His people to depend on their own savvy, their own personal power, nor their own numeric strength. In fact, when God’s people began to put their trust in themselves and their own power -- that is when they met defeat.

The Psalmist wrote:
“(16) No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. (17) A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. (18) But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, (19) to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.” (Psalm 33:16-19 NIV)

This is why, when Paul mentioned the spiritual warfare Christians are involved in, he began by saying:
“...be strong IN THE LORD and IN HIS mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10
NIV)

Then the armor to be put on is what the Lord provides. God provides what is suitable for the battle. God provides what is necessary to stand in the conflict. And He wants us to never forget that we are not alone in the struggle.

Have a great day persevering because HE IS WITH US!

Perseverance! (Part 1 of 5)

“In his book The Maverick War, Duane Schultz tells the story of Art Chen, a fighter pilot for the Chinese in the 1930’s when Japan was determined to conquer China.

“On one occasion Chen “took on three Japanese fighters and shot one down before running out of ammunition. He deliberately rammed the second Japanese plane, then bailed out. He landed close to the wreckage of his plane and salvaged one of the machine guns, which he carried eight miles back to the airfield. Presenting the heavy gun to his commanding officer, Chen allegedly asked, ‘Sir, can I have another airplane for my machine gun?’”

“That is dedication to the cause.”

-- Russ Atherton. (Evart, Michigan)
[via -- “Leadership” magazine, Spring ‘97]

Do we possess a dedication to THE CAUSE that empowers us to persevere rather than bailing out and calling it quits? We are exhorted by Scripture to understand there is a spiritual warfare going on and we, as the army of God, are to be involved. But to remain involved takes the strength to persevere.

James wrote:
“(2) Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, (3) because you know that the testing of your faith DEVELOPS PERSEVERANCE. (4) PERSEVERANCE must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4 NIV)

But how do we retain the fortitude to persevere in the midst of trials and conflict? We will note four things over the next four days to help us retain a spirit that enables us to keep on keeping on!

Have a great day set to PERSEVERE in the cause of Christ!

Avoiding Maalox® Moments!

We might not be able to avoid all of the life situations which seem to hit us in the stomach. However, some of what many suffer can be avoided.
Just like an individual who experiences severe heartburn or stomach problems should avoid taking in foods which contribute to the problem, we would do well to guard what passes our lips in a verbal sense.

Someone has noted, “Quite a bit of indigestion is caused by people having to eat their own words.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

We do need to be cautious with OUR WORDS, for quite often they come back to us whether they be bad or good. Perhaps we have too frequently experienced a knotted stomach because of what we have said to another.
Maalox® will not remedy what a clear conscience can.

Solomon stated…
“FROM THE FRUIT OF A MAN’S MOUTH HIS STOMACH IS SATISFIED; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips.” (Proverbs 18:20 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads: “Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the RIGHT WORDS ON A PERSON’S LIPS BRING SATISFACTION.”

Let us consider the impact of OUR WORDS, for not only can they affect others, but ourselves as well in either negative or positive ways. Should we have to eat OUR WORDS ourselves, will they be bitter or beneficial?
Disgusting or delicious? Polluted or palatable? Sour or sweet? Since OUR WORDS may be served back, let us speak so as to benefit and bless others that sweet blessing may be returned to us.

Have a great day SPEAKING FROM A GOOD HEART!

Advantageous Actions!

We may often focus on what will work to our greatest advantage. We set goals, make choices, and develop friendships with the hope things will work out well for us. However, we can become so focused on ourselves, even with regard to godly things, that we forget the advantage of BUILDING OTHERS UP.

In trying to reach OTHERS with the Gospel of Christ, Paul had learned to consider where they were in their spiritual walk and how best to connect with them. (note 1 Corinthians 9:19-23) Paul found this to be a means of tearing down walls and being able to share with OTHERS in the blessings of the Gospel. Though Paul would never compromise the truth, he was willing to give up some things (personal freedoms or rights) if that was what it took to bring OTHERS to a knowledge of the Gospel of Christ or encourage them in their growth in the Lord.

As Paul had focused on meat offered to idols and the challenge of conscience it presented to some in Corinth, he exhorted these brethren to share his attitude in ministry to OTHERS.

We read…
“(31) So, whether you eat or drink, or WHATEVER YOU DO, DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD. (32) Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, (33) just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, NOT SEEKING MY OWN ADVANTAGE, BUT THAT OF MANY, THAT THEY MAY BE SAVED.” (1 Corinthians 10:31-33 ESV)

Paul had a focus beyond merely his own advantage [“own good” (NIV) or “own profit” (KJV)] to what was most beneficial with regard to the salvation of OTHERS. The idea of the Greek word “sumphero” used by Paul points to the concept of gathering together or being advantageous. [“Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains”, by J. Johnson] To gain a brother or sister enlarges our circle of family in Christ. It enlarges the border of fellowship and the base of spiritual support. And it brings souls together with a focus toward the common good experienced in Christ’s Body. And such action on our part with regard to OTHERS is glorifying and pleasing to God.

As we genuinely seek the greatest advantage for OTHERS can we see how it in turn will promote the greatest advantage for ourselves as well? In the process we will be promoting a sphere of mutual harmony, peace, and edification. This was something very much needed in Corinth. It remains the continuing need today. May we sincerely share the attitude of Paul in service to OTHERS.

Have a great day PROSPERING IN SEEKING THE BEST FOR OTHERS!

Appetite!

It is been noted that people work to eat and eat to work. Such a focus may not point to much in the way of meaningful purpose for living, but in a sense it is true. One must work in order to have an income from which to purchase food to sustain the life. The food consumed in turn provides the energy and strength necessary to continue to work to provide more food, and on and on it goes.

Solomon acknowledged…
“A WORKER’S APPETITE WORKS FOR HIM; HIS MOUTH URGES HIM ON.”
(Proverbs 16:26 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads: “ It is good for workers to have an appetite; an empty stomach drives them on.”

HUNGER can be a great power in driving one to seek work in order to get the food necessary for satisfying the hunger. We see people from time to time holding signs reading “Will Work For Food!” and some of them really mean it. An appetite can be very strong motivation and the right foods bring ultimate benefit and satisfaction.

Are we motivated by a HUNGERING? Are we seeking to satisfy that HUNGER in a proper manner? When the disciples returned from Sychar (a city in
Samaria) after having gone to buy food (John 4:8), Jesus mentioned He had food to eat of which they did not know. The disciples then began to wonder if someone else had brought Him food. (John 4:31-33)

We read…
“Jesus said to them, ‘MY FOOD IS TO DO THE WILL OF HIM WHO SENT ME AND TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WORK.” (John 4:34 ESV)

Our Lord had an appetite for the Will of the Father. His actions, His teaching, His whole ministry on earth was driven by that appetite. And that appears to have strengthened Him to press on regardless of what He had to face. The same can be true with us as we diligently seek the Will of God and all that is right in accordance with His Will.

Jesus encouraged…
“Blessed are those who HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6 ESV)

Are we being driven by such a HUNGER? Have we come to experience how even works done to the glory of God can bring life giving nourishment and satisfaction to our souls? Such a focus can energize us to press on in all that is right in the eyes of God. It is an appetite that will work for us rather than against us. May we truly HUNGER after fulfilling His Will in our life so that we can receive the blessing of being completely and eternally satisfied by Him.

Have a great day DRIVEN BY AN APPETITE FOR GOD’S WILL!

Recognize the Cost!

It has been said that if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. This may be very true regarding the purchase of some things that are nice, but not necessarily needed. When I go shopping I like to see prices clearly marked. If I don’t see a price tag I usually look for someone who can tell me the price. However, there have been times when I simply either decided I really didn’t need the item that badly or it was probably more than what I wanted to spend and simply walked away.

Honestly acknowledging the cost of all things helps us to choose wisely so as to get the best bang for our buck. There is wisdom in recognizing what we CANNOT AFFORD. Someone has noted, “People who talk about the things they can’t afford sometimes forget that the list should included pride, envy, and malice.” [“1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Yes, there are some things we just CANNOT AFFORD and we should leave it that way. We don’t need them! We shouldn’t even desire them!

Paul warned…
“(19) Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, (20) idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, (21) ENVY, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that THOSE WHO DO SUCH THINGS WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD.” (Galatians 5:19-21 ESV)

Can we AFFORD that? Recognize the high cost of envy and the other works of the flesh Paul listed. Such can destroy our relationships and ultimately cause us to lose the inheritance God has in mind for us. There is no higher cost than that.

Before we react to situations or give in to temptation we need to soberly consider the cost and recognize what we CANNOT AFFORD to do. The cost of the works of the flesh is too high with regard to the impact on relationships within our families, within the church, with others in the world, as well as the personal loss of a right relationship with God. Let us rather keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25) that better fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) will be evident in our life to the glory of God and the benefit of those around us.

Have a great day SPENDING LIFE WISELY!

Existing!

It is possible to believe something so strongly that even though it may not exist, its existence is still believed and experienced in some way. That can be true for both one who believes in a god and one who does not. One can believe in such a way that they see only what they want to see. What we must be mindful of is the reality that what one believes or does not believe does not change the facts regarding what does or does not exist. Just as one cannot wish something into existence, neither can they wish it out of existence. Therefore, whatever evidence there is for the existence of something (or someone) must be honestly and rationally considered.

Yesterday we noted a statement by Paul to the church at Rome which pointed to the evidence of the existence of God through viewing what He has made. (Romans 1:19-20) Centuries earlier the psalmist had stated “The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1 ESV) The Hebrew writer exhorted that if we are going to draw near to God we must believe that He exists! (Hebrews 11:6) But what should our understanding of His existence mean with regard to our own existence?

After stating that an idol has not real existence (1 Corinthians 8:4), Paul stated…
“(5) For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth -- as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords” -- (6) yet for us there is ONE GOD, THE FATHER, from whom are all things and FOR WHOM WE EXIST, and ONE LORD, JESUS CHRIST, through whom are all things and THROUGH WHOM WE EXIST.” (1 Corinthians 8:5-6 ESV)

We exist first of all because God is the Creator of mankind. Were it not FOR HIM there would be no life. But as we exist we are to exist FOR HIM; for His purposes and His glory. And it is in our Lord, Jesus Christ that we are able to experience our greatest sense of existence since it is in Him we have been given the right to become children of God (John 1:12) and find the hope of an eternal existence.

God exists. He brought us into existence. And He has provided the means to sustain that existence in His eternity. However, we must be mindful of existing FOR HIM who has granted our existence.

John encouraged regarding what WE ARE as we exist even now…
“(1) See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; AND SO WE ARE. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (2) Beloved, WE ARE GOD’S CHILDREN NOW, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that WHEN HE APPEARS WE WILL BE LIKE HIM, because we shall see him as he is. (3) And EVERYONE WHO THUS HOPES IN HIM PURIFIES HIMSELF AS HE IS PURE.” (1 John 3:1-3 ESV)

Let us continue to be mindful of existing FOR THE GOD Who has given us life and promises to provide it for eternity.

Have a great day BEING HIS CHILD!

Quality!

Art, architecture, manicured landscapes, etc., are sometimes analyzed with a view toward the character of the “master” behind them. The finished WORKS tell us something about the designer’s expertise, perspective, and skills. The WORKS may also provide insight into the heart behind them.

The statement has been made, “By the work one knows the workman.” [Jean de la Fontaine, “Fables,” book I, 1668, fable 21]

That seems to be the very thing Paul stated regarding God.
“(19) For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. (20) For his invisible attributes, namely, HIS ETERNAL POWER and DIVINE NATURE, have been CLEARLY PERCEIVED, ever since the creation of the world, IN THE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20 ESV)

All that God has made declares something about Him. It reveals His great and awesome power, His wisdom, His Divine love and His ability to provide and sustain life. Everything in creation God made was good and served the purposes for which He made it. However, some of mankind (the part of God’s creation made in His own image) has taken some of His WORKMANSHIP and burned it, polluted it, thrown it out of balance, altered it, and denied the existence of the One behind it all. In light of the fact that God’s WORKMANSHIP should declare something about Him, how is our life helping others come to know our Creator and Master?

Paul reminded…
“For WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10
ESV)

May we truly reveal ourselves to be God’s quality WORKMANSHIP as we strive to do the WORKS He prepared for us to do, bearing in mind that the quality of our WORK will be tested. (1 Corinthians 3:13) Let us constantly live in a manner that provides a compelling reason for others to believe that He does exist and will reward those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews
11:6)

Revealing Reading!

Just as there are various things which can be read, reading is done for a variety of reasons. Among the purposes for which people read are:
education, entertainment, relaxation, and the stimulation of the mind.
Reading is a healthy exercise for both the body and the mind. It is also healthy for life both practically and spiritually, provided the proper materials are being read.

During the time of Nehemiah, following the rebuilding and dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, Ezra the priest and scribe (Nehemiah 8:9) lead in a study of the words of the Law with leaders and heads of the families.
(Nehemiah 8:13ff) There were commands of the Law which had not been observed. And there was a need for a reading to all the people to bring them back into full compliance with the Will of God. Therefore, the nation assembled for the purpose of hearing God’s commands.

We read…
“And they stood up in their place and READ from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God FOR A QUARTER OF THE DAY; for ANOTHER QUARTER OF IT THEY MADE CONFESSION AND WORSHIPED THE LORD THEIR GOD.” (Nehemiah 9:3 ESV)

For a fourth of the day they listened to the reading of God’s Law. While they listened intently, the reading revealed within themselves that their lives were not completely right with God. And by their RESPONSE it is revealed they had touchable hearts. The reading impacted them in a way that prompted an honest personal RESPONSE. Thus, for another fourth of the day they made confession and worshiped their God; a RESPONSE revealing clearly they had taken the reading personally.

It is true that some things may simply be read for readings sake. That is not to be the case, however, with the reading of God’s Word. His Words are life! They are wisdom we need! They are intended to bring change to our lives! And if we are truly attentive to what we read we will find it hard not to RESPOND.

What does our RESPONSE to the reading of God’s Word reveal about us? Do we walk away as if we had just read someone else’s mail? Or do we move on into the day a changed and better person because we have accepted personally the powerfully truths revealed? May we each continually find the practical freshness of God’s Word for everyday living.

Have a great day EXPOSING THE VALUE OF ACCEPTING GOD’S WORD!

Sufficient for the Tasks!

Have you ever been apprehensive about something you were called upon to do? Perhaps it was a situation which made you feel a bit awkward. Or possibly you simply felt you weren’t fully qualified to do the task. When we lack self-confidence there may be things we either completely refuse to try or at least approach very hesitantly. However, there is a positive side to possessing a lack of self-confidence. Self-confidence has actually gotten some people into great trouble. Some have launched themselves into situations where they quickly found themselves in over their head. Having CONFIDENCE is a powerful support when we are fulfilling various tasks, but when that CONFIDENCE is completely in self there ought to be some uneasiness.

Did Paul ever struggle with apprehension? It appears he may have had some as he began his work in Corinth. He referred to himself as having come to them in weakness, fear, and much trembling. (1 Corinthians 2:3-4) However, he was encouraged by God with regard to the work there. (Acts 18:9-10) Though Paul knew full well his own weaknesses, he seemed to have a marvelous way of focusing beyond himself to let God use him for the tasks at hand.

In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth he acknowledged with regard to his ministry…
“(4) Such is the CONFIDENCE that we have THROUGH CHRIST TOWARD GOD.
(5) Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us. OUR SUFFICIENCY IS FROM GOD, (6) WHO HAS MADE US COMPETENT to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (2 Corinthians 3:4-6 ESV)

Over the years I have found myself in many situations where I felt a real lack of self-confidence. But I was faced with something that needed to be done: some advice to be given, some support extended, a burden to help bear, a word of encouragement or exhortation, a conflict to help resolve, etc. And many times this has been with people I had never before met. Yet when I would remember to move my focus beyond self and let God use me in the moment, it has most often turned out to have been a fruitful situation to His glory.

When we place the confidence in ourselves we are bound to struggle. Let us therefore center our CONFIDENCE in the God Who is not going to ask us to do something He will not provide the strength to fulfill. When it comes to the fulfilling of His Will He will continually prove faithful. May we humbly allow Him to use us to His glory and praise.

Have a great day LIVING A GOD-CONFIDENT LIFE!

Tent Dwellers!

We enjoy camping. I grew up in a tent camping family. As our children were growing up, we tent camped. My wife and I even camped when we took our honeymoon, giving opportunity for our first argument and frustration with each other over trying to put the tent up and keep it up one night. One of the things we are now thankful for is the dome tents which go up a lot easier than was the case with some of the pole tents of earlier years.

Tents come in all shapes and sizes to sleep anywhere from one person to a large family or group of people. Such temporary structures suit their purpose while away from our more permanent dwellings. However, as we consider the reality of our life’s journey, there are two very distinct tents from which we can choose to dwell until we finally reach our eternal dwelling place.

Someone has said, “All the world lives in two tents: content and discontent.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Under which of these tents have we found shelter? DISCONTENT makes for restless wandering. Blessings and joys are overshadowed that could be appreciated. DISCONTENT can cause us to be agitated with others, envious, and driven by an insatiable desire for more. CONTENTMENT, on the other hand, can have a very calming affect as we move from day to day.

Referring to his own situation, Paul stated…
“(11) Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I HAVE LEARNED IN WHATEVER SITUATION I AM TO BE CONTENT. (12) I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I HAVE LEARNED THE SECRET of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. (13) I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” (Philippians 4:11-13 ESV)

The experiences of Paul’s life appear to have varied to the extremes.
Still He had a remarkable ability to keep things in perspective. Paul had learned how to be CONTENT. As we honestly look at our lives it shouldn’t be too difficult to learn we could be CONTENT with a lot less than we have. So why should we struggle so much with DISCONTENT? The secret is not in focusing on what we might want. That list may go on and on and on. Nor is it in focusing on what others have (although seeing a spirit of CONTENTMENT among many who have less than we have should teach us something). The secret to being CONTENT is in recognizing the greatest needs that have been met and retaining faith in the One who provides us with all good things. (1 Timothy
6:17)

Living in CONTENTMENT! It is not more stuff that is gain. Rather, it is “godliness with CONTENTMENT” that is great gain. (1 Timothy 6:6) If we leave God and the things of God out of the picture we are going to struggle with being DISCONTENT. He is the only One Who can truly bring satisfaction to our souls for this life and for eternity. Let us therefore place our hope solidly on God, trusting His strengthening for every situation, and recognizing the countless blessings He continues to provide so that we can truly learn to dwell in CONTENTMENT. Such will prove to be a true shelter from many worldly struggles. (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

Divine Purposes!

Hezekiah, king of Judah, was sandwiched between the reigns of a wicked father and a wicked son. He led the nation back to the worship of God, removing the high places where people had worshipped instead of the temple and tore down the altars of Baal. But when his son began to reign it appears Manasseh wasted no time undoing the good done by his father. He rebuilt the high places his father had torn down and set up altars for the worship of the Baals, and led in the worship of other gods, including the heavenly host. (2 Chronicles 33:1-3) But if that wasn’t enough…

“(4) And HE BUILT ALTARS IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, of which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem shall my name be forever.” (5) And HE BUILT ALTARS FOR ALL THE HOST OF HEAVEN IN THE TWO COURTS OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD.” (2 Chronicles 33:4-5 ESV)

The TEMPLE of Jerusalem, the place where God’s name was to be forever, was to be the place where man would meet God in worship. It was the place that was to remind the nation God was in their presence. The TEMPLE built by Solomon -- not because God needed a house, for even Solomon acknowledged that such a place could not contain God (2 Chronicles 6:18) -- was a place for Divine purposes; worship and focusing on the sovereign Will of God.

Bringing idolatry into the TEMPLE of God! We may be shocked that anyone would even consider doing such a thing. We may even be careful what we bring into our church buildings. However, are we not guilty of the same when we live our lives after our own purposes rather than God’s.

Paul reminded the Corinthian brethren…
“(19) Or do you not know that YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT within you, whom you have from God? YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN, (20) for you were bought with a price. So GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV)

Even our flesh, though it was not intended to last forever, was not created merely for fleshly purposes. It was created in the image of God to serve His Divine purposes. What we bring into this TEMPLE (our body) and what we do with our lives could be just as idolatrous as Manasseh’s desecration of the TEMPLE set up in Jerusalem. There ought to be a concern regarding even what we bring into our minds.

If we need to do some TEMPLE cleaning (note Nehemiah 13:7-9) let us get busy without delay. God’s TEMPLE (our body) is to be holy and we should diligently strive to keep it that way. Let us sincerely focus on the Divine purposes God has in mind for the use of our body and lives. May He be glorified by the use and contents of the TEMPLE we have been given to possess, yet keeping in mind we are not our own, but belong to Him.

Have a great day LIVING WORSHIPFULLY TO GOD’S GLORY!

Action and Reaction!

There is a law of physics stated by Sir Isaac Newton with regard to laws of motion which says, “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” (Newton’s third law) When we consider this idea with regard to our doing that which is GOOD and RIGHT, we have all experienced such action being met by sometimes an equal action while at other times an opposite reaction.

Mark Twain is quoted as saying, “Always do right -- this will gratify some and astonish the rest.” Sometimes the world is surprised by those who do RIGHT simply because it is RIGHT. Too often it is selfish action -- such as would provide personal benefit -- that is anticipated or expected. But to do RIGHT, even at the cost of personal advantage, often raises the eyebrows of a surprised world. On occasions when our GOOD and RIGHT actions are not well received we might wonder if it is worth the effort. When such is the case, what should we focus on doing?

As Paul was beginning to bring his letter to the church at Galatia to a close he stated…
“(9) And let us NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, LET US DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)

Doing RIGHT and GOOD is not to be limited to those who would return the same. (note also Matthew 5:44 and Romans 12:20-21) Let us continue to focus on doing what is GOOD and RIGHT simply because that is what it is. If it pleases some, let them be pleased. If it surprises others, let them be surprised. But through such action let us be encouraged by the ultimate satisfaction that God is pleased and will provide His reward in due season.

Have a great day COMMITTING EVERY ACTION TO GOD’S GLORY!

Be What You Are!

We probably all have some specific goals (both temporal and spiritual) we are striving toward. Perhaps we are even living with eager anticipation of what we might become. But are there times when we are actually less than what we are?

Paul, in the opening of his letter to the church at Corinth, made the following statement regarding the Christians there.
“To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those SANCTIFIED in Christ Jesus, CALLED TO BE SAINTS together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:” (1 Corinthians 1:2 ESV)

The Greek translated “saints” here could be literally translated “HOLY ONES” and the word translated “sanctified” is linked to the same Greek root. However, reading through Paul’s letter it does not take long to find out not all of the actions of the brethren at Corinth were HOLY. Among the inner challenges of the Corinthian church we find such things as divisions (chapters 1 & 3), tolerance of sin in their midst (chapter 5), lawsuits among brethren (chapter 6), and even a seeming lack of love (chapter 13). They fell short in many respects. Perhaps we would look at such actions and be ready to remark, “That ain’t no saint!” However, the tense of the word “sanctified” which Paul used could be most literally translated here, “HAVING BEEN MADE HOLY”. In Christ, this is what Paul said they were --
HOLY! He therefore wrote to exhort and rebuke them to conduct their lives in the HOLINESS that they received when they became a new creation in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Those of us who are children of God -- having put on Christ in baptism (Galatians 3:26-27) -- are we not also then HOLY? We have been called by a HOLY God to live HOLY lives. We are to be HOLY! In Christ, HOLY is what we have become! However, that doesn’t mean we become complacent and feel we need not grow. HOLINESS must remain the focus and perfection in Christ the goal.

Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul exhorted…
“(14) I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (15) Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. (16) Only LET US HOLD TRUE TO WHAT WE HAVE ATTAINED.” (Philippians 3:14-16 ESV)

Are we at the least living up to what we already know with regard to what we believe from the Scriptures and how we ought to conduct our lives? Let us continue to strive to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:18) While acknowledging that in Him we HAVE BEEN MADE HOLY, let us diligently strive to be exactly what He has made us to be. In this way our Lord will be glorified and the wisdom of God’s Will can be seen by those around us.

Have a great day BEING GOD’S NEW CREATION!

PERSONAL NOTE:
Yesterday's focus was sent early and today's is late because I have spent the last couple days with my father who just began chemo treatments. He has been diagnosed to have two inoperable tumors in his esophagus. I was glad to be able to be with my father during his treatment and remain with him following to make sure things continued well. His faith is good and so are his spirits. He returns for his next treatment in three weeks. (My mother has spent most of this week in Seattle, WA with my older brother who has been undergoing some monitoring at a hospital there).

Then this morning my wife called my at my parents' home to let me know that our daughter in Oregon who was expecting the end of July, had gone into the hospital because of her blood pressure and she has Toximia. My wife went to be with her. They were going to induce labor because of the condition. At 8:05 a.m. Jeremiah Tate Edgemon came into this world via C-section. He weighed 3 lbs, 12 oz. and is 16 and 1/4 inches long. Both our daughter and new grandson are doing as well as expected. Jeremiah is breathing on his own, but will be monitored closely. He will be in ICU for at least 3-4 weeks before ocming home.
Your prayers on behalf of my father, our daughter, and our new grandson, as well as my older brother and each of the families are much appreciated. Our God is good!

Down But Not Out!

When we look at the life of Paul, time and again there were people and situations which seem to have attempted to KNOCK him DOWN. However, Paul just kept getting back up. Even when he was literally KNOCKED DOWN by stones and left for dead, he got back up and continued in his service to God. (Acts
14:19-20) When he was KNOCKED DOWN he was not down for the count. And even when Paul was imprisoned, he was not completely KNOCKED OUT of service. (i.e. Philippians 1:12-13; 2 Timothy 2:9-10)

Someone has said, “When life knocks us to our knees, we are in a perfect position to pray.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Writing from prison to the church at Ephesus, Paul encouraged…
“(13) So I ask you NOT TO LOSE HEART OVER WHAT I AM SUFFERING FOR YOU, which is your glory. (14) FOR THIS REASON I BOW MY KNEES BEFORE THE FATHER, (15) from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, (16) that according to the riches of his glory HE MAY GRANT YOU TO BE STRENGTHENED WITH POWER THROUGH HIS SPIRIT IN YOUR INNER BEING, (17) so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith -- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, (19) and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:13-19 ESV)

Paul was a man of prayer. That continual connection with God was His source of strength to keep on keeping on regardless of what he faced. His constant desire was that he would have sufficient courage to honor Christ whether it be by life or death. (Philippians 1:20) And as he was encouraged by the prayers of others he continually prayed for them that they too would be encouraged and have sufficient strength to press on in faith.

Whether this life KNOCKS US to our knees, flat out with face to the ground, or flat on our back looking up -- we are in a perfect position for prayer. May we find it to be the great source of strength experienced by Paul in his continual pressing on to the eternal goal of the upward call of God in Christ. (Philippians 3:14)

Have a great day STRENGTHENED TO PRESS ON IN CHRIST!

“KNOCK! KNOCK!” “WHO’S THERE?”

We may enjoy the telling and hearing of “Knock! Knock!” jokes. Some are pretty funny and catch us by surprise while others may be rather dumb. However, there is a situation which makes for a very sad “Knock! Knock!” joke. Though it has been said, “When God closes a door, He opens a window”, the truth is, sometimes God just closes a door and that’s it.

In one of Jesus’ kingdom parables -- the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) -- we find opportunity to enter found and opportunity lost. Though it may be true that opportunity does often knock more than once, anticipating another opportunity could be nothing more than a dangerous gamble.

In reference to the five foolish virgins, we read…
“(10) And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, AND THE DOOR WAS SHUT. (11) Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ (12) But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you. ’” (Matthew 25:10-12 ESV)

“Knock! Knock!” “Who’s there? … I don’t know you! You lost your opportunity!” Such makes for a very bad joke because the implication is that souls are at stake. Jesus warned it can happen. The door can BE SHUT and left so. He then urged for watchfulness because we do not know when that time might come. (Matthew 25:13)

Let us “strive to enter through the narrow door” (Luke 13:24) because WHEN IT IS SHUT, IT IS SHUT. (Luke 13:25) No backdoor to go around to. No window to climb through. Just a door that was once opened, but then closed, SHUTTING out those who were not ready when it was open for entrance. May we always be watchful and prepared so as to not miss the opportunity God provides to enter into His glorious blessings.

Have a great day LIVING WATCHFULLY PREPARED FOR GOD’S OPPORTUNITIES!

Full Bloom!

Flowers blooming in the yard can be a great source of joy. When they are planted it is with the HOPE they will grow strong and soon beautify the area where they have been placed. With the spring rains and more frequent shining of the sun, the buds begin to form until, through the gradual unfolding of the petals, the blossoms open up into full bloom to display their beautiful colors. And even where there may be some weeds growing, it is still possible for a flower to bloom vibrantly.

In the second to the last chapter of the book of Romans, Paul stated…
“May THE GOD OF HOPE FILL YOU WITH ALL JOY AND PEACE in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may ABOUND IN HOPE.” (Romans 15:13 ESV)

The word translated “abound” in this passage is a word which points to exceeding a fixed number. It is a word which was also used for a flower going from bud to full bloom. A proper focus on the HOPE we have from God is a HOPE which is not intended to merely bud, but to gradually unfold to reveal every colorful petal of HOPE that is ours.

HOPE! What would our life be like if we had no HOPE? There is nothing very vibrant about the life of those who feel they have none. It is true life has its “weeds” which can detract from HOPE if we allow them. However, with our focus set on the things of God we can still bloom brilliantly and vibrantly to His glory as we bask in the shining of His Son.

Since God is the “God of HOPE”, it is from Him we must continue to seek the fruition of our HOPE. The HOPE this world offers will wither as the grass and fade as the flowers, but as God’s eternal Word stands forever (note Isaiah 40:6-8), so does the HOPE to which it directs. It is His HOPE filling our life with joy and peace that helps our life come to full bloom. May that HOPE truly abound in us by the power of His Holy Spirit.

Have a great day BEING A FRAGRANT FLOWER OF FLOURISHING FAITH!

When Spoken Against!

Peter asked a question we might wonder about even today?
“(13) Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?” (1 Peter 3:13 ESV)

Unfortunately, even when we do good, good is not always given in return.
And when things don’t work out the way we feel they ought, it is sometimes easy to wonder if striving to live righteously in an unrighteous world is worth it. Even the psalmist Asaph entertained such a thought (Psalm 73:13), but fortunately came back to a proper view. (note Psalm 73:16-17) [I encourage you to read the entire chapter for the full context of Asaph’s flow of thought.]

Someone has stated, “Slander, like coffee, is usually handed to you without grounds.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C.
McKenzie]

We ought to keep this in mind when people come bearing tales about others. And Solomon cautioned against associating with a slanderer.
(Proverbs 20:19) But even when the slander is directed at us personally, it may still be groundless.

Peter went on to exhort…
“(14) But EVEN IF YOU SHOULD SUFFER FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS’ SAKE, YOU WILL BE BLESSED. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, (15) but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;
(16) yet do it with gentleness and respect, HAVING A GOOD CONSCIENCE, SO THAT, WHEN YOU ARE SLANDERED, THOSE WHO REVILE YOUR GOOD BEHAVIOR IN CHRIST MAY BE PUT TO SHAME. (17) For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.” (1 Peter 3:14-17 ESV)

We may not always be treated as we ought. Even the good we do may be ill spoken of. Jesus, Who committed no sin, was spoken against. What did He do?
He entrusted Himself to the one Who judges justly. (1 Peter 2:23)

So what shall we do? HANG IN THERE!! Keep doing what is right! REMAIN FAITHFUL to the God who Himself can be nothing but faithful. (2 Timothy
2:13) Let us entrust our lives into the hands of God. Ultimately it will be worth it all!

Have a great day PERSEVERING IN WHAT IS RIGHT!
