Confidence En Route!

As Jesus was encouraging His disciples prior to His arrest and crucifixion, He stated that He was going to go and prepare a place for them and would return to take them to be with Him so that where He was, they could be also. ( John 14:1-3) He did not want them to be troubled. He wanted them to be assured. Jesus even told them that they knew THE WAY to where He was going. ( John 14:4) However, did they think so?

We read…
“Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING. HOW CAN WE KNOW THE WAY?’” ( John 14:5 ESV)

Do we have to know exactly where we are going in order to know THE WAY or is knowing THE WAY enough? Thomas didn’t think they knew THE WAY since they did not know where Jesus was going. The disciples still did not fully understand all that Jesus was going to go through. Thus, their lack of understanding was unsettling to them.

Traveling through places I have never been before has given me cause for nervousness; questioning whether or not I was on the right road. However, I have found confidence in reaching my destination when I was in possession of a good map. Another means of providing me with confidence in making the right turns and continuing on the right roads has been when I was following behind someone who was leading THE WAY. By so doing, I knew THE WAY to travel. THE WAY was to simply keep following the one who had the knowledge of how to get there!

Going back to John’s gospel we read…
“Jesus said to him, ‘I AM THE WAY, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” ( John 14:6 ESV)

We may not know all the details of the final destination. We also may have no clue regarding all the things along the route. However, knowing that Jesus is THE WAY, following Him reveals we do know THE WAY and can have confidence that He will bring us safely to where His is. With a good map (God’s Word) in hand and eyes set on following Jesus, we can be confident He will lead us safely to His final destination.
