The Need of All!

There are some needs we outgrow. That is the way it should be as we grow from childhood into adulthood. We ought to grow up physically and spiritually. (i.e. Hebrews 5:12-14) However, there are some things which were necessary in childhood that are still needed for as long as we live.

Someone has said, “When a man praises discipline, nine times out of ten this means that he is prepared to administer it rather than submit to it.”
[source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Just like a rebellious child, there are some who, as they grow older, refuse to be open to some things they need to hear. The truth is we all need DISCIPLINE in order to be sure we maintain DISCIPLINED lives. As experienced and wise as we might become, there will still be times when direction and instruction from beyond ourselves will be needed. Sometimes we are too close to ourselves to see as we ought. This is one reason why regular fellowship within the church as well as Bible study together are important.

Solomon exhorted…
“Whoever LOVES DISCIPLINE LOVES KNOWLEDGE, but he who hates reproof is stupid.” (Proverbs 12:1 ESV)

Not knowing as we ought places us in danger. Certainly DISCIPLINE (facing the truth about ourselves and changes which need to be made) is not always comfortable. As I was growing up I did not look forward to the DISCIPLINE my parents administered as they saw best. (note Hebrews 12:9-10) However, I have character today I would not have had otherwise and I rejoice in the fact my parents were loving enough to provide the DISCIPLINE I needed!

We might prefer flattery over the honest truth from others any day. However, flattery may only be what we “want” to hear instead of what we “need.”

How much do we love knowledge? Do we love the knowledge of truth enough to love DISCIPLINE? The Christian walk is a lifetime of growing. May we be open to the godly means by which that growth can continue to take place.

Have a great day CHERISHING CORRECTION TOWARD CHRIST-LIKENESS!

Genius And Wisdom!

Genius and wisdom. Are they truly known in this world for what they are?

One of the dictionary definitions for genius is: “extraordinary intellectual power especially as manifested in creative activity.” Wisdom is defined as “accumulated philosophic or scientific learning” and also “the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships” as well as “possessing “good sense.” [source: Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary, © 1971]

The world has been ingenious in the sense of being very creative in sinning against God as “inventors of evil.” (Romans 1:30 ESV) In its own enlightenment the world has rejected that which is truly wise. Today we see decisions made contrary to what we see in Scripture as GOD’S WAY. Yet those making the decisions consider themselves very wise.

Oscar Wilde made the statement, “The public is wonderfully tolerant. They forgive everything except genius.” (from “Intentions”, 1891) [source: “A Treasury of Business Quotations”, compiled by Michael C. Thomsett, #719, p.66]

Jesus had perfect knowledge. He knew when questions were intended to trap and He knew how to wisely respond. He could neither be trapped nor condemned in His responses regarding what was right. This fueled the anger that condemned Him to death. While many did accept the truth of His Word, much of the “intellectual circle” of the day did not because Jesus’ teaching did not fit their perspective of things.

The world has its wisdom. And when it is not accepted, the “intellectuals” call those who refuse to accept it “fools.” Today Christians have even been called “idiots” because of an unwillingness to accept what society wishes to tolerate. It seems too often that foolishness is accepted as wise and good sense is thrown out the window.

Note what Paul stated regarding wisdom in his letter to the church at Corinth.
“(20) Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
(21) For since, in the wisdom of God, THE WORLD DID NOT KNOW GOD THROUGH WISDOM, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:20-21 ESV)

We have the need to look to the wisdom from above. (James 3:17) What is our IQ (Intelligence Quotient)? I’m not sure what the best numbers are, but if we are intelligent enough to rely on GOD’S WISDOM rather than our own, we just might be considered geniuses in God’s eyes. May we continue to uphold His standard for life, for ultimately GOD’S WISDOM will be shown to be right (Matthew 11:19) in all things!

Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE WISDOM OF GOD’S WILL!

Born For What?

When a child is born into this world, the parents often wonder what it is their child will become? This new life that has entered life’s scene, what will be its DESTINY? Some reach a stage in life when they appear to feel they were born to be wild. Lack of discipline and self-restraint, however, often takes away from life rather than contributing toward it.

It has been said that once one is born, they begin to die. Solomon even noted death as the DESTINY of all mankind. (Ecclesiastes 7:2) This may be true physically, but it is not what God intended spiritually. Though we do need to die to self (i.e. being “crucified with Christ” --Galatians 2:19-20) in order for God to have His rightful place in our life, it is for the purpose of gaining “true life” in the process. (Matthew 16:24-25)

Note the contrast between the following two passages regarding birth.
James warned…
“(14) But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. (15) Then DESIRE when it has CONCEIVED GIVES BIRTH TO SIN, and SIN when it is FULLY GROWN BRINGS FORTH DEATH.” (James 1:14-15 ESV)

Peter encouraged…
“(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be BORN AGAIN TO A LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4) TO AN INHERITANCE THAT IS IMPERISHABLE, UNDEFILED, and UNFADING, KEPT IN HEAVEN FOR YOU,” (1 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

Two births mentioned with two completely opposite outcomes for the life. The life God has in mind for us is not one of sin and then on to death, particularly in the sense of eternal separation from God. In Christ, God has provided the means of new birth to be DESTINED for eternal glory in God’s eternal presence. Paul stated we were baptized into Christ’s death in order to “walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4 ESV) That walking with God now can carry us on into the glorious DESTINY God has prepared for all who are His. And physical death will not have victory over it.

What kind of conception is associated with our life? Since all mankind is DESTINED to die once, and then come to the judgment (Hebrews 9:27) we must consider for what we have been born! It is only through the new birth in Christ that we can be assured of the DESTINY of eternal glory prepared for God’s children.

Have a great day LIVING AS A GODLY CHILD OF DESTINY!

Right Under Our Nose!

Sometimes the very thing I am looking for is right under my nose. I look until I become frustrated, knowing I had placed the object in its usual place. Then, finally stopping the search, I simply look down and there it is. It was there all along; I had just kept looking past it or around it.

Rushing through a search it is easy to miss what we are looking for or what we need to find. Sometimes what I need to do is just slow down and OPEN MY EYES.

One of the psalmists stated…
“OPEN MY EYES, THAT I MAY BEHOLD WONDROUS THINGS OUT OF YOUR LAW.” (Psalm 119:18 ESV)

I have studied with people who have read their Bible before, yet would respond, “I never saw that scripture before.” or “Why didn’t anyone ever show me those passages before?” Their OWN EYES were seeing truths they had seen during prior readings. And though I myself read through the Bible each year I am amazed at what I have missed before.

God’s Word is worth reading. It is worth reading again. Though there are many books it is fine to say, “I read it once”, the Bible is not one of those. The Bible is the book to keep on reading and reading and reading until the day we die. And as we read let us do so with the prayer that God will OPEN OUR EYES to the wondrous truths He wants us to find. We can search the Scriptures to make a point (and we should make a point of having what we believe and say supported by the truth of God’s Word) while overlooking some of the truths we need to take to heart for our own personal spiritual growth.

May we keep our nose in God’s Book so that we may continue to find the treasures persevered there for our life enrichment!

Have a great day WITH EYES OPEN WIDE TO GOD’S WORD!

Wise Willingness!

Forgiveness is something we may struggle with from more than one angle. At times we may find ourselves having difficulty forgiving others who have wronged us or hurt us in some way. Even God’s willingness to FORGIVE is sometimes questioned. And perhaps the most difficult thing some may struggle with on occasion is the ability to FORGIVE self. Though some individuals may need more forgiveness than others (i.e. Luke 7:47), the truth is we all need it!

Someone has said, “Forgiveness from others is charity; from God, grace; from oneself, wisdom.” (Anonymous)

We appreciate those who are willing to forgive us. We may even recognize it as a sign of love. And we ought to have a great appreciation for the graciousness of God, recognizing it is because of His great love for us. However, we must guard against ever taking God’s grace for granted. We must also recognize the wisdom in being willing to FORGIVE others and ourselves.

Jesus stated…
“(14) For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, (15) BUT IF YOU DO NOT FORGIVE OTHERS THEIR TRESPASSES, NEITHER WILL YOUR FATHER FORGIVE YOUR TRESPASSES.” (Matthew 6:14-15 ESV)

It is wise to FORGIVE because, according to Jesus, if we withhold it from others, it will be withheld from us. God’s willingness to FORGIVE us should make it easier for us to forgive others. And accepting God’s forgiveness should make it easier to FORGIVE ourselves. To understand the completeness of His forgiveness ought to provide us with a great sense of peace. Accepting God’s forgiveness (and therefore being willing to FORGIVE
ourselves) is wisdom revealed in trusting the adequacy of the blood of Jesus to deal with our sins as well as taking God at His word.

Forgiveness provides the opportunity to leave some things behind and move on. It is in itself a solution to conflict in that forgiveness allows for peace between forgiver and forgiven as well as a calming peace within self. It is also wise action on our part because to FORGIVE is to be God-like. We are to be merciful because that is the way God is. (Luke 6:36) May God’s gracious spirit be instilled in our own lives.

Have a great day WILLING TO EXTEND WHAT WE HAVE RECEIVED!

Being His Friend! (part 5 of 5)

Abraham: “A FRIEND OF GOD!” (James 2:23) Abraham believed, obeyed, and feared God. What a friend! But another sign of genuine friendship is when common CONCERNS are shared.

Abraham had a heart that was troubled by the lawless deeds of others.
God is also troubled by the sinfulness of mankind. However, God is also gracious and CONCERNED for the lost.

God was distressed with the sinfulness of Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns, and was therefore going to destroy them. But God did not hide from Abraham what He was going to do. (Genesis 18:17) How did Abraham respond to the information? He was CONCERNED for those who lived there.
Therefore, Abraham pleaded with God that if but fifty, then forty-five, and then forty, thirty, twenty, and finally down to requesting that if even ten righteous were found, that God might spare them. (Genesis 18:16-33) Unfortunately, not even ten could be found. But ten would have been sufficient to spare these towns. Perhaps a side lesson here is for us not to underestimate the power of our presence in a sinful world as we live after the righteousness of God.

Are we CONCERNED about the things of which God is CONCERNED? Do we share a kindred spirit with God over sin while also holding out hope for repentance? Remember God had a CONCERN for Nineveh, and yet Jonah did not share that CONCERN. Yes, he eventually went and preached to the people of Nineveh, but it appears he still did not think they were worthy of God’s mercifulness. In fact, Jonah complained rather than rejoiced (Jonah 4:1-2) over God’s willingness to withhold His destruction.

Since we have received the benefits of God’s grace and mercy, should we not share a desire for the world to come to experience it as well? Do we share a CONCERN for lost souls?

Paul expressed his own view in these words:
“(14) I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. (15) So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. (16) For I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL, for it is THE POWER OF GOD FOR SALVATION TO EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:14-16 ESV)

Let us share a CONCERN for the interests of God that we, like Abraham, may also be called His friends!

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD’S MATTERS TO MATTER TO US!

Being His Friend! (part 4 of 5)

Abraham: “A FRIEND OF GOD!” (James 2:23) He believed God. He obeyed God.
Why? Because Abraham rightfully viewed God high above and set apart from anyone or anything else.

As Abraham was following God’s command to offer Isaac, we read…
“(9) When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. (10) Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. (11) But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here am I.’ (12) He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that YOU FEAR GOD, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.’” (Genesis 22:9-12)

God’s request for Abraham to offer his son Isaac -- the son of the promise of God and the link to the blessing of future peoples -- must have been a bit confusing to him to say the least. However, since Abraham had a REVERENTIAL FEAR for God, he was willing to completely submit to His Will.
This was the foundation of Abraham’s unwavering faith in God. To Abraham, God was sovereign. God was the focus of his life worship. And whatever God asked, Abraham, in FEAR, was ready to carry out, whether he completely understood or not. That is the high sign of allowing God to have His rightful place of supreme sovereignty in connection with a life.

What place does God hold in connection with our life? We must recognize, when it comes to friendship with God, there is no middle ground. A choice must be made between friendship with the world and that with God. (note James 4:4)

Solomon summed up what should be our foundational focus in these words:
“(13) The end of the matter; all has been heard. FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, for THIS IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN. (14) For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”
(Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 ESV)

The “whole duty of man”; fearing God and keeping His commands. Is our life summed up in the sense we are allowing God to be God, having complete sovereignty over our life? No wonder Abraham was called a “friend of God.”
May we always seek to allow God to have His rightful place in connection with our life!

Have a great day GIVING GOD THE REVERENCE HE IS DUE!

Being His Friend! (part 3 of 5)

Abraham: “A FRIEND OF GOD!” (James 2:23) God spoke and he believed. But that was not the end of the matter for Abraham. What else marked his character enabling him to be referred to as a friend of God?
The Hebrew writer noted the following regarding this great man of faith.

“(8) BY FAITH ABRAHAM OBEYED when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And HE WENT out, not knowing where he was going. (9) BY FAITH HE WENT to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. (10) For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. … (17) By faith Abraham, WHEN HE WAS TESTED, OFFERED up Isaac, and he who had received the promises WAS IN THE ACT OF OFFERING UP HIS ONLY SON, (18) of whom it was said, ‘Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.’ (19) He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” (Hebrews 11:8-10 & 17-19 ESV)

Can you read that passage without saying, “WOW!”? Abraham believed God and OBEYED. Is it possible to believe without OBEYING? Well, James indicated it is possible. (James 2:19) But what better reveals true belief than an eager willingness to submit and OBEY? Abraham OBEYED and went where God led.
He OBEYED and was ready to offer the son God had promised to provide.
Abraham’s OBEDIENCE passed the test and revealed the genuineness of his trusting faith in God.

How about our own OBEDIENCE? How well do we face the tests presented in this life? Do we pass in a way which reveals our true friendship with God?
Or do our choices reflect more of a friendship with the world?

Jesus warned…
“(21) Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, BUT THE ONE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN. (22) On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ (23) And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” (Matthew 7:21-23)

Our belief must be more than mere lip service. But the OBEDIENCE must still be in accordance with the Will of God! True OBEDIENCE is doing His Will!

Abraham OBEYED God! And through Abraham came the fulfillment of a blessing for all nations; a son and a heritage traced to the coming of Jesus, the One through Whom all can receive God’s greatest blessings. Jesus is the “source of eternal salvation TO ALL WHO OBEY HIM.” (Hebrews 5:9) How truly we must understand how faith and works are inseparable. (James
2:17,20,26)

There should be no question regarding the need for OBEDIENCE. Jesus told His own disciples, “You are MY FRIENDS IF YOU DO what I command you.” (John
15:14 ESV) As a friend of God we should seek to please Him. In order to do so we, like Abraham, must believe and OBEY! May we continue to focus on our part in maintaining the friendship with God.

Have a great day EAGER TO DO GOD’S WILL!

Being His Friend! (part 2 of 5)

Abraham: “A FRIEND OF GOD!” What made him so? What was the character of Abraham that should allow for such a marvelous designation? Let us begin by considering the characteristic of Abraham noted by James when he referred to Abraham as God’s friend.

James wrote…
“and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, and it was counted to him as righteousness’ -- AND HE WAS CALLED A FRIEND OF GOD.” (James 2:23 ESV)

For Abraham, his journey with God from Ur to Canaan was most definitely a walk by faith and not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7) And I love Paul’s statement regarding how Abraham “BELIEVED against hope” (Romans 4:18) with regard to God’s promise of a son. In spite of the seeming odds of the flesh, Abraham BELIEVED God could fulfill what He had promised.

What about us? What about our BELIEF?

The Hebrew writer stated emphatically…
“And WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE HIM, for whoever would draw near to God MUST BELIEVE that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6 ESV)

Do we sometimes struggle BELIEVING? Perhaps our prayer should be as the one who said to Jesus, “I BELIEVE; HELP MY UNBELIEF!” (Mark 9:24) One of the great blessings in a true friendship is being able to BELIEVE in each other.
Our God is faithful. He is completely trustworthy. May we have a friendship with God marked by steadfast BELIEF in all His commands and promises.

Have a great day LEARNING TO TRUST GOD COMPLETELY!

Being His Friend! (part 1 of 5)

We sing the song “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” [Joseph Scriven 1855 and Charles C. Converse, 1868)] and perhaps reflect on how we have no greater friend than He. Among the many good qualities of a friend we might list honest, loyal, true, someone who is there for you through thick and thin, supportive, encouraging, or one who would try to please. We can easily recognize the wonderful benefits a friendship provides. However, we must also acknowledge our own responsibilities for maintaining the relationship.
The bond of friendship is a two-way street.

James referred to Abraham as being “CALLED A FRIEND OF GOD.” (James 2:23
ESV) What a wonderful compliment. Is it not also a designation we would hope to share? What was it about Abraham that opened the door for such a statement regarding his relationship with God?

In John 8 we find Jesus in the midst of a discussion that appears to have taken place at the temple. (John 8:2) In the midst of that discussion, Jesus mentioned the truth associated with Himself that had power to bring freedom. However, some of His audience felt no need to be set free. They weren’t slaves. After all, they were children of Abraham and had not been slaves of anyone. (John 8:31-33) What they failed to recognize was the slavery to sin from which they were in need of being set free. (John
8:34-36) And though they desired to align themselves with Abraham, they also failed to recognize they did not share his character. Instead, Jesus eventually aligned them with the character of their “father the devil.”
(John 8:44) To the character of whom is our life most closely aligned?

Abraham: “A FRIEND OF GOD!” Over the next few days, I invite you to consider with me some of the reasons Abraham may have been considered such a friend! If we genuinely strive to share that likeness, we too may share the compliment. How much of a FRIEND OF GOD do we desire to be?

Have a great day SEEKING ALIGNMENT WITH ABRAHAM’S CHARACTER!

Awash!

While in college I worked as a custodian. During that time I had the unfortunate experience on more than one occasion when the wheels of my mop bucket stopped for some reason. Due to my own momentum continuing to push the bucket forward, it quickly overturned allowing its contents to run everywhere as if a FLOODGATE had opened wide. A little water can go a long ways.

How quickly a glass of water (or a bucket) can be tipped over, and as quickly as we might react, once it begins flowing, it flows beyond our catching it! What we then find ourselves faced with is a mess to be cleaned up. And the more the volume of water the more the problem is magnified, even to the point of water damage beyond repair.

Solomon noted…
“THE BEGINNING OF STRIFE IS LIKE LETTING OUT WATER, so quit before the quarrel breaks out.” (Proverbs 17:14 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads “Beginning a quarrel is LIKE OPENING A FLOODGATE….”

Like water breaching a dam, once it has started flowing it cannot be stopped. It will flow on and do its damage. And oh what devastation can come from quarreling. Once the FLOODGATE of the mouth has opened, the flow cannot be brought back. It goes and does what it will, even flowing to those whose ears may have not been meant to hear. And the damage is done, some of which may be irreparable. Therefore we must be careful, guarding against allowing the quarrelling to begin. Just like floodwaters, careless words can washout and devastate the lives of others.

Have a great day WISELY MONITORING THE SOURCE OF THE FLOW!

Salty!

The story has been related regarding a young salesman who was disappointed over the loss of a sizable sale. Moaning to his sales manager, he said, “I guess it just proves the truth of the saying ‘You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.’” The manager responded, “Your job isn’t to make him drink. Your job is to make him thirsty!” [source: adapted from bulletin clipping]

What is the impact of our Christian life on those around us? We can’t force others to believe. As much as we might like, we can’t drag them to church services to hear the message of God. And though some seem to have tried, cramming the Bible down another’s throat is generally not very well received. We may possess a great desire for others to accept the truth of God (and we should), but what we are to be mindful of doing on a daily basis is living and talking in a manner that begins to create the desire -- the THIRST -- within themselves.

Jesus stated…
“YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” (Matthew 5:13 ESV)

There are a number of analogies which can be drawn from Jesus’ teaching on our being “the salt of the earth.” When we consider salt’s healing, preservative, and seasoning powers, it is not hard to consider how our lives can impact others in such ways. Though we do need to be careful to not over allegorize Jesus’ illustration, we do understand the power of salt to produce great THIRST as well. Salt in too large a quantity can make one sick. However, salt dispensed in palatable quantities can begin to gradually create a THIRST that must be satisfied.

Paul exhorted…
“(5) CONDUCT YOURSELVES WISELY TOWARD OUTSIDERS, making the best use of the time. (6) LET YOUR SPEECH ALWAYS BE GRACIOUS, SEASONED WITH SALT, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:5-6
ESV)

Paul did not teach for God’s message to be honey-coated. The truth of its promises and warnings are to be extended as plain and clear as they have been recorded. However, the way in which we gently and lovingly speak the truth and live it out in our daily lives can serve to create a THIRST that will ultimately cause others to want to drink in God’s satisfying truth.

Let us be “the salt of the earth”; living and speaking wisely to instill in others a THIRST for God’s Way. May we live for the purpose of helping others come to know how it is by thirsting after God’s righteousness (Matthew 5:6) that it is possible to truly be satisfied.

Have a great day LEADING OTHERS TO THE LIVING WATER OF JESUS!

Greater Conquest!

Throughout the history of mankind there has been the conquest of cities, nations and peoples. In some of these, mighty forces have drawn together to lay siege and conquer. And in the processes of it all, many lives have been affected, some for good and some for bad. Yet the territory most in need of conquest may be closer than we think.

Solomon stated…
“WHOEVER IS SLOW TO ANGER IS BETTER THAN THE MIGHTY, and HE WHO RULES HIS SPIRIT THAN HE WHO TAKES A CITY.” (Proverbs 16:32 ESV)

“Better than the mighty” or “than he who takes a city” is the one able to practice SELF-CONTROL; the one who has learned to keep anger in check. How true that some who have won great victories or conquest in the world, have been found to have failed miserably with regard to their own personal lives.

When it comes to SELF-CONTROL, James mentioned anyone who is able to control the tongue and not stumble in what is said “is a perfect man.” (James 3:2) Now, there is a worthwhile goal. There is the accomplishment and conquest to seek to obtain. It is the picture of a disciplined life being lived humbly before God and man. May God help us in the battle with self that we may gain this victory in accordance with His righteousness.

Have a great day WINNING THE BATTLES CLOSEST TO HOME!

Sufficient for the Task!

Someone has stated, “The preacher’s business is to comfort the afflicted, and to afflict the comfortable.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”
, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Certainly the suffering need to be comforted. However, it is also true that we can become too comfortable with where we are and may need to be either afflicted or convicted by the Word to refocus on the important things of God. And GOD’S WORD is adequate for either.

If GOD’S WORD is being used by the messenger, then both ought to take place as needed. Sometimes Paul stated “comfort [encourage] one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:18) while other times (such as to Titus) he pointed to the sound doctrine of the message convicting or rebuking those who would contradict it. (Titus 1:9) As a messenger of the Word, Timothy was exhorted to be ready to use it in whatever way necessary for the occasion.

Paul encouraged Timothy to…
“preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; REPROVE, REBUKE, AND EXHORT, WITH COMPLETE PATIENCE AND TEACHING.” (2 Timothy 4:2
ESV)

We should read GOD’S WORD to find comfort. We should meditate upon it to be encouraged. We should study the Scriptures to be convicted by them. And we can share GOD’S WORD with others for the same possible impacts as well.

If we rely upon GOD’S WORD rather than our own ideas, it will prove adequate to do whatever is needed. (i.e. 2 Timothy 3:16-17) An older preacher told me something years ago I have never forgotten. He said, “Don’t aim so low as to step on toes. Aim for the heart.” May we pray for open receptive hearts (including our own) as GOD’S WORD is focused upon.

Have a great day ACCEPTING WHAT WE NEED FROM GOD’S WORD!

Being Known!

People talk. They form their opinions and state their conclusions.
Sometime we don’t like what they say about us or how they perceive our situation. Knowing their view and hearing their words can hurt deeply and give us cause for discouragement. What are we to do in such situations? Is there any thought that can cheer us and bring us comfort and encouragement?

Job stated…
“Even now, behold, MY WITNESS IS IN HEAVEN, and HE WHO TESTIFIES FOR ME IS ON HIGH.” (Job 16:19 ESV)

Job’s friends accused him of great sinfulness. They surmised that was the cause of all that had come upon him. However, Job knew the life He had lived and that God was the WITNESS of it all. Even when our own perception of our life is not clear, we can find comfort in our relationship to God knowing that to Him we are fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)

God is the WITNESS of all that goes on around us and within us. His view is not hindered or skewed by anyone or anything. His perception is very clear. And since it is His view which matters most we can find comfort in having Him as our WITNESS as we strive to walk in accordance with His Will.
We also have One on high Who speaks on our behalf.

“For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, NOW TO APPEAR IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD ON OUR BEHALF.” (Hebrews 9:24 ESV)

Jesus is our advocate with the Father. (1 John 2:1) In our relationship to Him He speaks on our behalf. And in Him we can find comfort that our condemnation has been removed. (Romans 8:1) May we find great assurance and comfort in knowing we have such a WITNESS and advocate on high!

Have a great day UPLIFTED BY WHAT GOD KNOWS!

Sharing!

Someone has observed, “We should exchange problems. Everybody knows how to solve the other fellow’s.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Many are very quick to jump to conclusions and share advice when viewing the lives of others. Perhaps if the experience was completely shared there would be a drastic change in the perception of the situation.

Job had friends who thought they had his problem all figured out. However, the theology of those poor comforters was flawed, especially with regard to their distinction between the wicked and the righteous. Though they saw the wicked punished and the righteous blessed, Job pointed to the reality in life that the wicked did often prosper while the righteous were not free from some of the injustices and pains of life. It is important to recognize that life situations do not always boil down to a “cause and effect” ideology.

A reality of life is we don’t always fully understand the problems or trials of others. This being the case, what should we focus on providing?

Paul exhorted…
“BEAR ONE ANOTHER’S BURDENS, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2 ESV)

We don’t have to fully understand another’s situation to just be there for them; to offer the COMFORT AND SUPPORT needed. That may include some teaching when clear violation of God’s Word is being practiced (note Galatians 6:1), but even that is to be done in loving GENTLENESS. Also, rather than speaking for God (as Job’s friends seemed to do) regarding what is not fully clear, we should talk to God on behalf of others. After all, He is the One who fully understands every circumstance and situation.

“BEAR ONE ANOTHER’S BURDENS,…” Share the load. That is what we have been called to do; sharing which reveals a genuine loving interest in others and action which fulfills the law of Christ to love one another as He has loved us. (John 13:34) May we allow God to use us to offer the COMFORT AND SUPPORT others around us may need.

Have a great day FULFILLING CHRIST’S LAW OF LOVE!

Meeting It!

I was recently talking with an individual who has done some foreign traveling. In the course of our conversation she mentioned when preparing to go to a foreign country she would try to learn the words for saying important things among which was asking where the bathrooms or restrooms were. We might agree that seems like an important thing to be able to find out. She said restrooms were not always easy to find. One place they had gone into on a particular trip, when they asked if they had a bathroom the response was, “No! But we have Coca-Cola®!”

To me, what was offered would seem to have increased the NEED the request pertained to. However, isn’t that much the way it is in this world; people being offered something other than what they NEED most. And many times what is offered only serves to increase the NEED for what is truly NEEDED.

The more one becomes a partaker of the things of the world, the greater the NEED for the things of God, especially His forgiveness. The more one sins the more they are in NEED of God’s grace. But continuing to sin for the sake of receiving more grace (note Romans 6:1-2) does not bring the grace.
Rather such action moves one further from God.

It is not from continuing to drink of the cup of the world that our NEED is met. What the world offers (its “Coca-Cola®”) may taste good, but continuing to drink it in only increases our NEED and will never satisfy it.
Our NEED is to draw near to God and His Way and through Jesus that has been made possible.

The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“LET US THEN WITH CONFIDENCE DRAW NEAR TO THE THRONE OF GRACE, THAT WE MAY RECEIVE MERCY AND FIND GRACE TO HELP IN TIME OF NEED.” (Hebrews 4:16
ESV)

May we help others understand that God is the great supplier of our true NEEDS. (Philippians 4:19) The above mentioned responder may have thought offering an American icon (Coca-Cola®) to American travelers would have made them happy. However, it did not meet the present NEED. It is the things and the Ways of God which we need to accept regardless of what nationality we might be. After all, if we are in Christ, our citizenship is in Heaven.
(Philippians 3:20) May it be the things of Heaven which appeal to us most.

Have a great day FINDING THE TRUE HELP FOR OUR EVERY NEED IN CHRIST!

Reformed Runner!

While I was out walking today I was asked by an individual who had seen me walking before, “Are you a reformed runner?” Responding that I used to run, but my knees could no longer take the pounding, I told him I had found that a fast paced walk worked well enough to keep my metabolism up.

As I continued on my way I thought more of his question, “Are you a reformed runner?” Perhaps that is the precise need for many in this world; the need to become reformed runners. There are many who are RUNNING AFTER the things of this world rather than RUNNING OR WALKING AFTER the things of God; people RUNNING AFTER the desires of the flesh rather than walking in accordance with God’s way. Solomon referred to those whose feet were quick to run to evil (Proverbs 6:18), but also mentioned those who ran to the safety in God (Proverbs 18:10).

John warned…
“EVERYONE WHO GOES ON AHEAD AND DOES NOT ABIDE IN THE TEACHING OF CHRIST, DOES NOT HAVE GOD. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.” (2 John 9 ESV)

The New International Version reads, “Anyone who RUNS AHEAD….” A reformed runner will stop running after the things of the world and turn to pursue the things of God. The Psalmist mentioned his running in the way of God’s commandments. (Psalm 119:32)

Paul urged Timothy…
“So FLEE YOUTHFUL PASSIONS and PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS, FAITH, LOVE, AND PEACE, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:22 ESV)

Are there some things we are presently RUNNING AFTER which should be replaced with a walk in the Lord or a hastening of our steps back to Him? Let us always be mindful of making every step we take one that is in the steps of Jesus. It is sure to enhance our health in every way. (1 Timothy
4:8)

Have a great day KEEPING PACE WITH GOD’S WILL!

True Blue!

The true colors of some individuals do not always show until such persons are needed most. Someone has said, “Prosperity makes friends; adversity tries them.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C.
McKenzie]

Solomon acknowledged how wealth can bring many new friends. (Proverbs
19:4) However, what we need are TRUE FRIENDS. They are the kind money can’t buy and adversity does not run off. When one is blue and times are too, it is the “true blue” friends who will remain; those who are completely loyal and faithful.

Solomon stated…
“A FRIEND LOVES AT ALL TIMES, AND A BROTHER IS BORN FOR ADVERSITY.”
(Proverbs 17:17 ESV)

I don’t see the references to a friend and a brother as being opposite, but rather both to be mentioned in a positive way. It was not that a friend was loyal and a brother adversarial. Instead, as a TRUE FRIEND would be loyal, a TRUE BROTHER was also born to help and support when adversity came.

The New Living Translation reads: “A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.”

It is in the tough times that our true friends and bothers (and sisters) are revealed. They remain loyal in times of prosperity and adversity. Such are more than a friend -- they are brotherly in times of need. And it may be the adversity itself that brings forth such true godly colors.

The key to this kind of loyal friendship and brotherliness is genuine love. Such relationships are beautiful and are a powerful source of support.
Relationships of this sort are where a shared burden is cut in half and shared joys are multiplied. Within the church, God’s family, there ought to be such a source of support through a willingness to stick together through thick and thin. That is what the Lord desires and the world needs to see.
(note John 13:34-35)

May we pray that we have such TRUE FRIENDS and TRUE BRETHREN and that we ourselves would be such to those around us. Since we have that kind of TRUE FRIEND in Jesus, walking in His steps we should be the same to others.

Have a great day BEING A LOVING FAITHFUL FRIEND!

Opened To Declare!

Many people have varying ideas regarding who Jesus is. The truth about Jesus and how we are to relate to Him is of eternal significance. It is not enough to simply place Him in a category with other great teachers or martyrs for a cause.

In the opening of his letter to the church at Rome, Paul wasted no time pointing to the declaration of Who Jesus was!
“(1) Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, (2) which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, (3) concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh (4) and was DECLARED TO BE THE SON OF GOD IN POWER according to the Spirit of holiness BY HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD, Jesus Christ our Lord,” (Romans 1:1-4 ESV)

Yes, the fact Jesus fit prophecy after prophecy pointed clearly to His Divinity. (John 5:39-40) The power displayed in His miracles also testified to Who He was. (John 10:25 & 38) Though Jesus willingly submitted to a cruel death by crucifixion, He died by a means others had suffered. But it was Jesus’ victory over death -- the POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION -- that was the clincher in pointing to His being the SON OF GOD! It was the sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:39-40) He had referred to earlier in His ministry. It was undeniable. Why else would some of the Jewish leaders have paid off the soldiers who had been given charge to guard the tomb and circulate the story the disciples had stolen the body? (Matthew 28:11-15) They knew what the implications of an EMPTY TOMB represented!

The EMPTY TOMB was opened, not so that Jesus could get out, but so that human eyes could see He was no longer there. It was the open declaration of the Savior who came to give His life that through Him we could have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10) and eternally. HIS RESURRECTION is the assurance of our own who belong to Him. (1 Corinthians 15:20-23) May we openly declare His Lordship by our life and words.

Have a great day TRUSTING IN HIS RESURRECTION POWER!

Sufficient For All Time!

There are many things we do, knowing we will have to do the job again. Washed dishes will again be eaten from and require washing. Weeded gardens will once again need weeding. Dusted shelves will again need dusting. Painted walls will again need painting. Washed hands will again need washing. Etc. But, oh, what joy and satisfaction is felt over tasks which can be completed once for all time with no need of being done again. Perhaps a couple thing that have gotten close to this are metal roofs and aluminum siding for houses.

In the Hebrew writer’s comparison between the Old and the New we read…
“(11) And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. (12) But when Christ had offered FOR ALL TIME A SINGLE SACRIFICE FOR SINS, he sat down at the right hand of God, (13) waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. (14) For by A SINGLE OFFERING he has perfected FOR ALL TIME those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:11-14 ESV)

What the continuing endless sacrifices could not accomplish regardless of how many were offered, Jesus accomplished by ONE SACRIFICE for all time. Jesus, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) is the sufficient means of providing for our purification from sin. (Hebrews
9:14) What the blood of bulls and goats could not do (Hebrews 10:4), Jesus fulfilled in accordance with God’s Will. (Hebrews 10:5-7) God’s grace, extended through Christ, is completely sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9).

John encouraged as he exhorted…
“But IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, we have fellowship with one another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS HIS SON CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN.” (1 John 1:7 ESV)

In Jesus -- power to deal with all sin! May we keep on walking in fellowship with our Lord so as to receive the continuing sufficiency of His SINGLE SACRIFICE for all time!

Have a great day SUBMITTING TO GOD FOR THE ADEQUATE MEANS OF SALVATION!

At The Right Time!

People have their own ideas regarding proper timing in helping others. Some would say, “Just as soon as they get their act together I’ll help them out.” or “When they are willing to acknowledge I have something to offer, then I’ll join in to assist.” When one is not acknowledged or feels they have been snubbed, it is easy to return the same. Praise God, however, that He has not chosen to deal with us in like manner.

Paul pointed out…
“(6) For while we were still weak, AT THE RIGHT TIME CHRIST DIED FOR THE UNGODLY. (7) For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die -- (8) but GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE for us in that WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US.” (Romans 5:6-9)

Paul did not say Christ died for the good people. He didn’t say Jesus gave His life for the saints. It wasn’t for the righteous Paul said Jesus suffered a tortuous death. It was for the “ungodly”! GOD’S LOVE was demonstrated in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for sinners like you and me!

Some might say that is the wrong time to love. Wouldn’t such love be an indication of acceptance or condonement? No! Such love as the LOVE OF GOD provided the means of rescue from the dilemma of our guilt through the power of Christ’s blood. We accept that provision through belief in Him, a willingness to repent of ungodliness, and submission to baptism into Christ so that we can rise to live as a new creation to walk on as a child of God.

What if God had waited for mankind to deserve such a provision as we have in Christ? We would still be dead in our sins. (note 1 Corinthians 15:17) Though mankind still must respond, redemption’s price has been paid. Recognizing what God has already accomplished through Christ should compel an obedient response. May His grace for us not be extended in vain. (2 Corinthians 6:1) Rather, let us continue to allow His gracious gift to gain a proper response as we acknowledge HIS MAGNANIMOUS LOVE.

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE TIMING OF GOD’S LOVE!

Right On Time!

One of the things I may hate more than anything is to be late for something. My wife often says my view seems to be that if I’m not early I’m late. The truth is I don’t like to rush. I like to be where I’m supposed to be when I’m supposed to be there, but also in time to relax and be prepared mentally for whatever the function might be. When having to travel some distance I try to leave plenty of time for any possible delays. If I am meeting someone somewhere, I try to make it so that I wait for them, rather than them having to wait for me. However, I must admit my inclination to not be late usually gets us places way earlier than is really necessary.

GOD’S TIMING, on the other hand, is superb. Our Creator, the One who is not limited by time (2 Peter 3:8) has brought His plans to fruition at the precise time He has deemed right. Though His people through the ages have been pictured living in great anticipation of the fulfillment of His prophecies, each has (or will) come to fruition in His perfect time.

Reading through the Gospel of John I have always been captivated by the statements regarding GOD’S TIME. From the first mention by Jesus of “My hour has not yet come” (John 2:4) to his first “The hour has come” (John 12:23) to His “It is finished” (John 19:30) we see GOD’S PERFECT TIMING played out on our behalf. There was no hurrying it. It would not be disrupted. All was to take place in accordance with God’s Divine plan.

Paul declared it this way…
“(4) But WHEN THE FULLNESS OF TIME HAD COME, GOD SENT FORTH HIS SON, born of woman, born under the law, (5) TO REDEEM THOSE WHO WERE UNDER THE LAW, SO THAT WE MIGHT RECEIVE ADOPTION AS SONS.” (Galatians 4:4-5 ESV)

Jesus came when it was time. He gave Himself to redeem us; to purchase us back for God by the power of His blood. He could not be taken before it was time (i.e. John 7:30, 44; 8:20; 10:39). But when the time came, Jesus willingly went (John 18:4-8) and willingly laid down His life, only to take it up again, as He Himself had foretold. (John 10:17-18)

GOD’S TIMING! May we be encouraged by it. Let us trust it. After all, it is His purposes which shall ultimately stand. (Proverbs 19:21)

Have a great day TRUSTING GOD THROUGH EACH HOUR!

Through The Valley!

Even in the daylight it is possible to find ourselves in the shadows.
Though the sun is still shining, darkness and gloom can surround us and the path before us may not be as bright as we would like. Walking under a canopy of trees or down in a deep valley, the sun’s brightness is often obscured, thus darkening our way. Life’s journey can sometimes feel much like that as well.

The lighting of our way in this realm may not always be as bright as we would desire. There are times when our walk is very much a walk of faith rather than one by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) When such is the case, are we tempted to retreat, to stop, or do we PRESS ON, trusting God to bring us through?

In the beloved twenty-third psalm David stated…
“Even THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, I will fear no evil, for YOU ARE WITH ME; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4 ESV)

In the valley, David did not say, “I stop there” or “I die there.” The focus was on walking through it. The valley was part of the path to where he journeyed. For a shepherd leading sheep, a valley was part of the route to the higher grazing area. When we experience the valleys in life we should remember that is merely what they are, and from there we can move onward and upward.

Valleys are often the routes to higher spiritual ground and though we my struggle seeing the light of God or the light of His Son, the Son of God is still reigning and shining on high. Let us therefore keep PRESSING ON. It may be just around the next bend that we will again glimpse the Son-light to make our path clearer.

Have a great day WALKING ON TOWARD THE HIGHER GROUND!

Inwardly Defined!

Some appear to be defined by the clothes they wear. Others seem to be defined by the position in society they hold. But when one moves beyond the outward appearance and is able to look below the surface, the picture may be much different. When we consider our own life, we may dress it up by various means, but what lies beneath the surface? What do we THINK?

Solomon stated…
“(6) Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies, (7) for he is like one who is INWARDLY CALCULATING. ‘Eat and drink!’ he says to you, but HIS HEART IS NOT WITH YOU.” (Proverbs 23:6-7
ESV)

An alternate translation is given in the English Standard Version as
“(7) for AS HE CALCULATES IN HIS SOUL, SO IS HE.” The King James Version also reads, “(7) For AS HE THINKETH IN HIS HEART, SO IS HE….”

True defining of an individual begins within. And it is important to consider what is developing beneath the surface. Someone has said, “Think right; act right; it is what you think and do that makes you what you are.”
[source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Though others may not know, God knows what we THINK and we know what we THINK. And what we THINK tends to come out sooner or later. Therefore what we THINK needs to be closely guarded. Jesus pointed out that the heart needs to be guarded because it is from there that our speech flows. (Matthew
12:34) THINKING the right things will aid in having a good flow as well as prompting good actions -- all reflecting the wholesome THINKING going on within.

Paul exhorted…
“Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is HONORABLE, whatever is JUST, whatever is PURE, whatever is LOVELY, whatever is COMMENDABLE, if there is any EXCELLENCE, if there is anything WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)

Perhaps the commitment we should make is if a thought does not fit into any of those categories, we should dispel it from our mind. By so doing we will have godly defined words and actions produced in our life.

Have a great day LIVING A LIFE OF TRUE MEANING TO GOD’S GLORY!

Confidence En Route!

As Jesus was encouraging His disciples prior to His arrest and crucifixion, He stated that He was going to go and prepare a place for them and would return to take them to be with Him so that where He was, they could be also. (John 14:1-3) He did not want them to be troubled. He wanted them to be assured. Jesus even told them that they knew THE WAY to where He was going. (John 14:4) However, did they think so?

We read…
“Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING. HOW CAN WE KNOW THE WAY?’” (John 14:5 ESV)

Do we have to know exactly where we are going in order to know THE WAY or is knowing THE WAY enough? Thomas didn’t think they knew THE WAY since they did not know where Jesus was going. The disciples still did not fully understand all that Jesus was going to go through. Thus, their lack of understanding was unsettling to them.

Traveling through places I have never been before has given me cause for nervousness; questioning whether or not I was on the right road. However, I have found confidence in reaching my destination when I was in possession of a good map. Another means of providing me with confidence in making the right turns and continuing on the right roads has been when I was following behind someone who was leading THE WAY. By so doing, I knew THE WAY to travel. THE WAY was to simply keep following the one who had the knowledge of how to get there!

Going back to John’s gospel we read…
“Jesus said to him, ‘I AM THE WAY, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6 ESV)

We may not know all the details of the final destination. We also may have no clue regarding all the things along the route. However, knowing that Jesus is THE WAY, following Him reveals we do know THE WAY and can have confidence that He will bring us safely to where His is. With a good map (God’s Word) in hand and eyes set on following Jesus, we can be confident He will lead us safely to His final destination.

Have a great day FOLLOWING HIS LEAD!

On The Ladder!

Nice cars, spacious homes, great jobs, a cushy paycheck, etc. What MOTIVATES the success of individuals can vary greatly. MOTIVATION may be linked to a view of helping others or with the eye only toward self.

Have you ever climbed up and down a ladder with someone else? Did you get your fingers stepped on? Were you guilty of stepping on the fingers of the other individual? Was there a little bumping and shoving because the pace from rung to rung was not the same? Or did you approach the journey on the ladder in a way that made it safely possible to be done together? There are some who climb the ladder of success while helping push or pull others up along the way. However, many make the climb not caring who they step on so long as they reach the top themselves.

Solomon pointed to a negative MOTIVATION he observed “under the sun.”
“Then I SAW THAT ALL TOIL AND ALL SKILL IN WORK COME FROM A MAN’S ENVY OF HIS NEIGHBOR. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.” (Ecclesiastes 4:4 ESV)

This MOTIVATION is what has been called “Keeping up with the Joneses.” However, many times the idea is to surpass the Joneses. Being driven by envy makes it difficult to acknowledge the success of others and rejoice with them. It also feeds a spirit of discontent with regard to what one presently possesses.

Perhaps Paul hit the key to the focus when he stated…
“(6) Now there is GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. (8) But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV)

There is nothing wrong with having the nice things often associated with success. However, the means by which we gain and use them is extremely important. Our greatest gain is connected with godliness. Let us therefore seek to use whatever we have been blessed with -- whether things or our status in life -- to the glory of God and the benefit of those around us.

Have a great day FOCUSED ON SHARING THE GREAT GAIN OF GODLINESS!

Being One!

When it came to defining a neighbor, Jesus seemed to turn the focus away from who one might view as a neighbor more toward the idea of BEING a neighbor. That was the emphasis of Jesus’ parable of the good Samaritan. (Luke 10:29-37) The one who asked for the definition of a neighbor was told to “go, and do likewise.” (Luke 10:37) There is an action we are to be mindful of that goes beyond the idea of who we might live close to.

Someone has stated… “Don’t expect your neighbor to be better than your neighbor’s neighbor.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

To really be honest about it, how often have we expected more of others than we perhaps were ready to give (or give in) ourselves. The greatest power for us to influence and impact the lives of others is to simply treat them rightly regardless of what they have done or whether or not our actions will be reciprocated. According to Jesus, to do for others merely for the sake of having it returned makes us no different than the rest of the world. (Matthew 5:46-47)

The true GOLDEN PRINCIPLE we must always keep in view is…
“So WHATEVER YOU WISH THAT OTHERS WOULD DO TO YOU, DO ALSO TO THEM, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12 ESV)

That is the GOLDEN PRINCIPLE which ought to adorn our lives; our actions and our words. But how is such action possible? By learning to love in the way God has called us to love. In fact it is living a life that exemplifies the kind of love He has demonstrated toward us. Such action on our part is linked to what Jesus referred to as the second greatest command.

After referring to loving God with our whole being, Jesus stated…
“The second is this: ‘You shall LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31 ESV)

And James stated…
“If you really fulfill the ROYAL LAW according to the Scripture, ‘You shall LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF,’ you are doing well.” (James 2:8
ESV)

This one GOLDEN PRINCIPLE of treating others as we wish to be treated, driven by such a love as Jesus and James addressed, can make a world of difference in relationships. We know what we like. We understand what we want. What we have therefore been called to do is treat others in the same way. Deal with others as we wish to be dealt with. Be patient toward others in the way we wish them to exercise patience toward us. Speak to others in the way we wish to be spoken to. Be considerate of others in the way we would want others to be considerate of us. Jesus’ GOLDEN PRINCIPLE will lead us toward the possession of golden relationships.

Have a great day BEING A LOVING NEIGHBOR!

Popularity!

There was a college professor who got the impression that a particular girl was not very well like by the other girls. He asked one of them why it was and was told, “It’s because she won last year’s popularity contest.”

Since the views of others can be so changeable, why is so much effort put into becoming popular among others? People can be so fickle. Today’s superstar quickly becomes yesterday’s history. In day-to-day life people can be all for you one moment and completely against you the next. For example, when Paul and Barnabas went to Lystra, they received quite a reception.
Among those who intently listened to Paul’s message was a man who had been crippled from birth. When Paul healed this man it brought quite a reaction from the crowd.

Luke recorded…
“(11) And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” (12) BARNABAS THEY CALLED ZEUS, AND PAUL, HERMES, BECAUSE HE WAS THE CHIEF SPEAKER.” (Acts 14:11-12 ESV)

They were impressed to say the least. Then the priest of Zeus began to make preparations for a sacrifice to them. Paul tried to dissuade the people by pointing the attention away from himself to the “living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.” (Acts 14:15) As a humble messenger being well received we might think a door was opened wide for ministry on that day. Unfortunately that’s not the whole story.

Note how quickly the scene changed.
“But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, THEY STONED PAUL and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.” (Acts 14:19 ESV)

Acclaimed as gods one moment and stoned the next. Yes, how quickly the rise and fall of popularity can come. Fortunately Paul survived and continued on with Barnabas to Derbe. They did, however, later return to Lystra to encourage those who had believed. (Acts 14:21)

Popularity is often sought and gained when one focuses more on self than anything (or anyone) else. This was the case with the Jewish leaders who saw Jesus as a threat to their position and those who loved the praise of men more than that of God. (John 11:48; 12:42-43) With Paul, it mattered not if he was judged, by men. Instead, it was where He stood IN THE EYES OF GOD that mattered most.

Being right and upholding the truth does not always parallel popular opinion. However, right and truth are always on THE SIDE OF GOD. People may sway from side to side regarding who or what is popular, but with God we can know where we stand as we genuinely seek His Will. Though the world may be fickle, we can be encouraged by the consistency of God. May we continue to be mindful of His view.

Have a great day SEEKING TO PLEASE GOD!

A National Holiday!

(The following focus is a repeat from 04/01/2000. The Scripture quotation, however, has been changed to the English Standard Version)

It has been remarked that Christians have the Easter and Christmas Holidays to celebrate, but what day is there for atheists to observe? It has been suggested that today is the day; APRIL FIRST!

We may have fun with jokes on April Fool’s Day, but the grave reality is that there are some real FOOLS in this world. They lack the sense to see as they ought. In their own puffed up minds they miss what even the simple-minded have been able to see.

The Psalmist wrote:
“THE FOOL SAYS IN HIS HEART, ‘THERE IS NO GOD.’ They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.” (Psalm 14:1 ESV)

This idea is also repeated in Psalm 53:1.

With all the attempts in our society today to get God (or references to
Him) out of everything possible, how long will it be before some could rightfully declare April Fools Day A NATIONAL HOLIDAY?

For us believers, every day is a day to celebrate, as every day is a gift from our God. We look at the beauty of Creation and know Who to thank for its splendor. We look at the precision of our universe and the structure of plant and animal life and know there is a Great Designer we can thank. How could anyone truly believe it is all the result of some cosmic accident? We observe the tragic consequences individuals bring to their lives through sin and know Who to thank for giving us better direction than man has been able to establish himself. We experience the peace of forgiveness and know the One to Thank who has provided the adequate provision for the guilt of sin to be removed. And we thank God that He is God!

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING GOD IN ALL YOU DO!
