Need An Anchor!

Though Tuesday is a day I take off during the week, I still had a number of things I wanted to get accomplished today. After doing my usual morning Bible reading and having some breakfast I decided to get my walk for the day in early. It was a bit overcast, but still calm as I headed out. However, about seven miles into my walk a breeze began to blow and a chill went down my spine. Meeting another man who was out walking his dog I commented that it felt like we were in for a CHANGE. He agreed that it was starting to get quite chilly.

Thinking of the chill I had just felt by the CHANGING weather, I began to think of the winds of CHANGE in society and “religion” that sometimes cause me to shudder. And there are many which should. For one reason or another some are bent on CHANGING what God has declared to be true.

As I continued on, about nine miles into my walk it began to sprinkle and I thought of how often God was grieved with Israel for departing from His commands. Even today God must be grieved over those who refuse to hold to the sound teaching of Scripture. It was raining a bit more by the time I completed my eleventh mile and not long after arriving at home the rain began coming down pretty hard.

Just as it was in the past, so today the grief of God must continue to become greater over the numbers who CHANGE His Way and teach others to do the same. Too many, because they have not anchored themselves to the truth of God’s word, are continuing to be “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every WIND OF DOCTRINE, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” ( Ephesians 4:14 ESV) Recently on the news an individual even made the statement “that we are not a prisoner of half a dozen scattered pieces of scripture.” In other words they had chosen to ignore those passages. The truth is that we must allow the Word to take us captive; every thought being taken “captive to obey Christ.” ( 2 Corinthians 10:5)

Paul warned Timothy…
“(3) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having ITCHING EARS they will accumulate for themselves TEACHERS TO SUIT THEIR OWN PASSIONS, (4) and WILL TURN AWAY FROM LISTENING TO THE TRUTH and wander off into myths.” ( 2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)

Yesterday I heard a radio host refer to this passage and state he was not sure if it applied to our present times, but observed it sure sounded like it. I would say that it applies as much now as it did when Paul wrote it during the first century.

This is why Paul had exhorted Timothy to…
“PREACH THE WORD; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” ( 2 Timothy 4:2
ESV)

May we accept the Word of God as it is, allowing IT TO CHANGE US. Only then will we be kept from drifting from the stability His Word provides for life.

Have a great day
Carl
