Good Health!
When you think of the word “constitution”, what does it bring to mind?
Do you think of that document which outlines the basic laws and principles our government is based upon? It is beneficial for our society to acknowledge and live by the same principles. Order and peace can be enjoyed when people strive to live by the same rules. Such lends toward a healthy society.
Another focus of the word “constitution” has to do with personal health.
When we refer to someone’s constitution, we are talking about their general health condition. We might say someone has a good constitution because of their ability to withstand disease or other difficulties of life.
Perhaps you have also heard someone mention having had their DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL. Though this expression may be dated, I still hear it expressed from time to time. A DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL is not a reference to reading the Constitution on a daily basis, though the word “constitutional”
is used in reference to what our Constitution authorizes. This expression is a reference to a regular activity -- usually a short walk -- for health reasons.
How about a spiritual DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL? Don’t we need that in order to maintain good health? If we are going to be healthy disciples of Jesus, what must we do?
Note the words of Jesus Himself:
“And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY and FOLLOW ME.’” ( Luke 9:23 ESV)
All three of these -- the self-denial, the taking up of our cross, and following -- are to be daily. Daily we are to walk on with Jesus; following in His steps. Though the use of the expression “DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL” may be dated, may it never be outdated in our life, especially in a spiritual sense. Daily walking in the Will of our Lord helps keep us mindful of God’s governing principles, as well as helping to bring order to our life.
Let us each continue to be mindful of going daily to the Word of God and walking daily in accordance with it so as to be aided in developing and maintaining a spiritually healthy constitution. May this always be our DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL.
Have a great DAILY WALK WITH CHRIST!
