The Nose Knows!

Take a deep breath. Hold your breath. Count to ten. Pick up your Bible and read a passage. Take a walk.

What do the above suggestions have in common? Each has been offered as a means of calming oneself down in an effort to keep ANGER UNDER CONTROL. It has also been suggested… “To avoid trouble and insure safety, breathe through your nose. It keeps the mouth shut.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips” compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

James put it this way…
“(19) KNOW THIS, my beloved brothers: let every person BE QUICK TO HEAR, SLOW TO SPEAK, SLOW TO ANGER; (20) for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires.” (James 1:19-20 ESV)

He who knows this not may find themselves taking it in the nose! ANGER can be an overwhelming thing. (Proverbs 27:4) I have struggled with my own at various times. However, it must be kept UNDER CONTROL. And finding a way to keep the mouth from spouting off is supreme advice. To know the best safeguard is to practice being “slow to speak” and “slow to anger” as we become better listeners. By exercising such control we will prove to be a blessing to others and the product of God’s righteousness will be revealed in our own life.

Have a great day BEING SAFE IN THE KNOWS!

Need An Anchor!

Though Tuesday is a day I take off during the week, I still had a number of things I wanted to get accomplished today. After doing my usual morning Bible reading and having some breakfast I decided to get my walk for the day in early. It was a bit overcast, but still calm as I headed out. However, about seven miles into my walk a breeze began to blow and a chill went down my spine. Meeting another man who was out walking his dog I commented that it felt like we were in for a CHANGE. He agreed that it was starting to get quite chilly.

Thinking of the chill I had just felt by the CHANGING weather, I began to think of the winds of CHANGE in society and “religion” that sometimes cause me to shudder. And there are many which should. For one reason or another some are bent on CHANGING what God has declared to be true.

As I continued on, about nine miles into my walk it began to sprinkle and I thought of how often God was grieved with Israel for departing from His commands. Even today God must be grieved over those who refuse to hold to the sound teaching of Scripture. It was raining a bit more by the time I completed my eleventh mile and not long after arriving at home the rain began coming down pretty hard.

Just as it was in the past, so today the grief of God must continue to become greater over the numbers who CHANGE His Way and teach others to do the same. Too many, because they have not anchored themselves to the truth of God’s word, are continuing to be “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every WIND OF DOCTRINE, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” ( Ephesians 4:14 ESV) Recently on the news an individual even made the statement “that we are not a prisoner of half a dozen scattered pieces of scripture.” In other words they had chosen to ignore those passages. The truth is that we must allow the Word to take us captive; every thought being taken “captive to obey Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)

Paul warned Timothy…
“(3) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having ITCHING EARS they will accumulate for themselves TEACHERS TO SUIT THEIR OWN PASSIONS, (4) and WILL TURN AWAY FROM LISTENING TO THE TRUTH and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)

Yesterday I heard a radio host refer to this passage and state he was not sure if it applied to our present times, but observed it sure sounded like it. I would say that it applies as much now as it did when Paul wrote it during the first century.

This is why Paul had exhorted Timothy to…
“PREACH THE WORD; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” (2 Timothy 4:2
ESV)

May we accept the Word of God as it is, allowing IT TO CHANGE US. Only then will we be kept from drifting from the stability His Word provides for life.

Have a great day

Tree of Life!

Would we seek fruit from dead wood? Could we honestly expect to find nourishment from that which had no life in itself? Of course not! We would look for a tree that showed signs of life; standing strong, healthy branches, lots of leaves, etc. However, when it comes to living, how many are searching for life from that which does not hold it?

The first place we read of a “tree of life” is in the garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:9) God put it in the midst of the garden even before he placed Adam and Eve there. It was a BLESSED gift and provision for man from God. Adam and Eve were able to enjoy its fruit -- that is until they sinned and were driven from the garden. (Genesis 3:22-24)

The last place we read of a “tree of life” is in the “paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:7; 22:2, 14, & 19) God has prepared this tree in His paradise for the nourishment of the redeemed. According to Revelation this “tree of life” was prepared to be a BLESSING for those who had conquered and washed their robes.

But is there a “tree of life” for us right now? Is there a “tree of life” we can find that will provide a BLESSING for us today?

Solomon, referring to WISDOM, stated…
“SHE IS A TREE OF LIFE to those who lay hold of her; THOSE WHO HOLD HER FAST ARE CALLED BLESSED.” (Proverbs 3:18 ESV)

WISDOM; a “tree of life.” As in folly one can find death, in the WISDOM of God is found true life. His WISDOM sustains. His WISDOM nourishes. His WISDOM brings BLESSINGS now and for eternity. May we seek and find the true satisfaction and nourishment the WISDOM of God has been preserved to provide.

Have a great day BLESSED BY WISDOM’S FRUIT!

Three Words!

When my wife and I greet each other at home after being apart doing our work, the three words she enjoys hearing are not, “What’s for dinner?”, but rather, “I love you.” However, accompanied by those words must be ACTIONS that convey the same message. Our relationship to God should be considered in that light as well. Is the evidence of our love for God clearly revealed in the ACTION of our life?

Over the last three days we noted some acts of worship from Psalm 96. Take a look again with me at two verses of the Psalm we considered two days ago, noting the ACTION associated with our worshipful relationship to God.

The Psalmist exhorted…
“(8) Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; BRING an offering, and COME into his courts! (9) WORSHIP the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!” (Psalm 96:8-9 ESV)

Besides “ascribe” and “tremble”, the psalmist mentioned three other
verbs: “BRING”, “COME”, and “WORSHIP”. Are those three words associated with what we have done today? Are they connected in some way to our life every day?

The Jews understood that when they came together for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Booths, they were not to come to the Lord “empty handed.” (Deuteronomy 16:16) They were to BRING something as they CAME to WORSHIP God, remembering all He had done on their behalf. This morning we may have brought something to contribute to support the work of the church. But as important and needful as that is, we also should have brought a heart and life to be offered more fully to the God we WORSHIP.

Our COMING to God is not to be an empty thing. To BRING indicates we desire to offer something to Him. To COME signifies a walking toward HIM; being drawn to Him. And the BRINGING AND COMING are to be with a purpose to WORSHIP.

BRING! COME! WORSHIP! All three verbs exhibit together a genuine love for God. Let us daily focus on BRINGING ourselves more fully in line with His will as we COME nearer and nearer to Him, offering life WORSHIP to the One Who has provided for all our blessings both now and for eternity.

Have a great day GENUINELY LOVING THE ONE WHO FIRST LOVED US!

Worship in Three Acts! (part 3 of 3)

In Psalm 96, there appear to be three specific emphases on worship. We have noted the act of song and ascribing to God His due. Today let us consider the third act.

The Psalmist encouraged…
“(11) LET the heavens be glad, and LET the earth rejoice; LET the sea roar, and all that fills it; (12) LET the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy (13) before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.” (Psalm 96:11-13 ESV)

LET! LET! LET! LET! Not hindered! Simply allowed! God’s creation allowing gladness, rejoicing, and exultation to spring up before the Creator. We also should simply LET it happen because we are His creation and His children. As we come to know God more fully it should be a natural expression of worship.

LET! LET! LET! LET! A word of submission; allowing it to be so! Submission to the natural feeling of responding to God. A reaction that simply cannot be restrained in view of His gracious and loving goodness. Sentiment that shows on the face, in the life, and made evident through the words spoken.

We don’t worship some angry god which must constantly be appeased. We worship the Creator, the Living God, the God with Whom we can have a personal relationship. And we can respond such because of the relationship He has made possible.

LET us be glad! LET us rejoice! LET the praise roar. LET us exult in an air of continual joy. The submissive relationship to our Creator should just naturally produce it. LET it be so!

Have a great day EXULTING JOY IN THE LORD!

Worship in Three Acts! (part 2 of 3)

In Psalm 96, there appear to be three specific emphases on worship. Yesterday we noted the act of song. Today consider the second act.

The psalmist exhorted…
“(7) ASCRIBE to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ASCRIBE to the LORD glory and strength! (8) ASCRIBE to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts! (9) Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!” (Psalm 96:7-9 ESV)

ASCRIBE! ASCRIBE! ASCRIBE! Assign to Him. Attribute to Him. Give to Him. Credit Him. Acknowledge the glory and strength of His essence. Declare His worthiness of being worshipped.

ASCRIBE! ASCRIBE! ASCRIBE! We are to do it! It is action! We are to declare the greatness of God by word of mouth. Our view of God’s awesome glory and strength is to be evident in the trusting way in which we live according to His Will. It is to be worship of action and word throughout our daily lives.

ASCRIBE! ASCRIBE! ASCRIBE! It is to be sincere. It is to be heartfelt. It will happen in the life that maintains a worshipful focus on the majesty and sovereignty of God.

May every aspect of our being ASCRIBE, yes, ASCRIBE, and ASCRIBE again the glory and honor God is due. He is supremely worthy of such worship.

Have a great day MAKING A LIFE DECLARATION OF GOD’S AWESOMENESS!

Worship in Three Acts! (part 1 of 3)

In Psalm 96, there appear to be three specific emphases on worship. Certainly there are other acts of worship mentioned throughout the Scriptures, but for now I would like us to consider these three (the first today and the others, Lord Willing, over the next two days) and how they relate to our daily life. A focus on worship is to be an ongoing thing. Since we were created to be worshipful beings it should be as natural as breathing.

The psalmist began…
“(1) Oh SING to the LORD a new song; SING to the LORD, all the earth! (2) SING to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.” (Psalm 96:1-2 ESV)

SING! SING! SING! In other words -- Do it! When the soul is genuinely drawn to worship God, how can it help but break forth into SINGING? Again and again throughout the pages of Scripture we read of God’s people breaking forth in song following the great deliverances of God and displays of His awesome power. Are we duly inspired as we focus on Him and all His wondrous works?

We don’t just SING because the song leader calls out a number as we assemble together. Neither do we merely SING because it sounds good to our ear. There is a higher reason for song which should spill over into our daily lives as well. We SING because of God; He has given us much to SING ABOUT. We SING about God; His very essence being an endless source of song. We SING to God; our relationship to Him being a continuous cause for songs welling up from within our soul as a fountain of praise.

SING! SING! SING! God provides the “worthship” for song, therefore we will SING!

Have a great day IN TUNE WITH GOD FOR SONG!

Careful Now!

As we consider our own life, the first IMPRESSION we leave with others is important. It may either open or close a door of opportunity to share God ’s message with them. Therefore, it is important for us to be mindful of living wisely. On the other hand, we must recognize it is far too easy for us to jump to conclusions regarding how we see others. Our first IMPRESSION of them may not be accurate and could also serve to either open or close the door of our heart to the opportunity to reach out to them.

Someone has stated, “Don’t judge a man by the clothes he wears; God made one, the tailor the other.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E.
C. McKenzie]

There is much more than meets the eye. We must learn to look deeper than the surface of an individual.

James warned…
“(1) My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. (2) For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, (3) and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ while you say to the poor man, ‘You stand over there,’ or, ‘Sit down at my feet,’ (4) HAVE YOU NOT THEN MADE DISTINCTIONS AMONG YOURSELVES AND BECOME JUDGES WITH EVIL THOUGHTS?” (James 2:1-4 ESV)

To make such a judgment, according to James, is to entertain evil thoughts. This is not the kind of thinking in which God desires us to participate. To make such distinctions is to reveal that we do not yet possess the mind of Christ, but are rather exercising a worldly view. Later James would remind his readers of man being “made in the likeness of God.”
(James 3:9) This was to be considered concerning the way others were treated, especially (according to the context) with regard to being spoken about or to.

Like our Lord, let us not make distinctions based upon outward appearance. May we instead bear in mind the value of every soul as we hold out the hope found only in Jesus.

Have a great day EXERCISING A PROPER VIEW TOWARD OTHERS.

Home!

Though I enjoy camping -- going somewhere, setting up a tent, and living in it for a few days -- I still always look forward to returning to our house with a regular bed, hot shower, electric refrigerator and stove. The tent is merely a temporary shelter while away from home. Home is a more PERMANENT structure.

As the nation of Israel traveled through the wilderness, they lived in tents. They pressed on looking forward to the Promised Land where they would have towns and fortified cities; real walls and roofs over their heads.
Also, as they journeyed, they carried the tabernacle; the center of their worship to God. However, once they reached the Promised Land, God told them there would eventually be a more PERMANENT structure in the place where His Name would be -- that being the temple built by Solomon in Jerusalem.
Certainly the people looked forward to a sense of more PERMANENCE.

How about us? Is a sense of something PERMANENT an encouragement to us?
Paul noted a contrast which should not only help us keep a proper perspective regarding life, but also encourage us with regard to what God has in mind that is more PERMANENT than what we have now.

Paul wrote…
“For we know that if the TENT, which is OUR EARTHLY HOME, is destroyed, WE HAVE A BUILDING FROM GOD, A HOUSE not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Corinthians 5:1 ESV)

Paul referred to our body as a tent. Our flesh and bones were only intended to be a temporary dwelling for the soul. As the hymn arranged by Albert E. Brumley (1937) states:

“This world is not my home, I’m just a passing thro’.
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.”

We are not home yet. We are journeying on as we dwell in the tent of this body. Yet, this tent is a center of worship to God as we give ourselves completely to Him as living sacrifices. (Romans 12:1) But someday we are promised to receive a more PERMANENT dwelling; “a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” It is the encouragement Jesus gave the disciples.
(John 14:2) It is a PERMANENT dwelling being prepared for us, a people prepared in this realm for such a glorious dwelling as it will be.

Let us continue pressing on in service to God in this realm. We’re not home yet. We are to continue moving about, following God as we live in the temporary tent of this body. But as children of God, let us be encouraged by the assurance of a PERMANENT home for the soul prepared for an eternity with our Lord.

Have a great day KNOWING A PREPARED PLACE AWAITS US!

Old Enough!

“When I get older….” “If I were still young….” Those are words which sometimes precede the excuses for not being involved right now. Certainly age makes a difference regarding either the experience, wisdom, or energy and strength for the performance of some tasks. However, is there a concept of age that has hindered the possibilities in our own life?

Consider the following examples:
-- Mozart had his first composition published when he was only seven years old.
-- It was at the age of ninety-four that George Bernard Shaw had one of his plays first produced.
-- At age thirteen, Benjamin Franklin began working with his brother James who had brought a printing press from England, and by age fifteen or sixteen he was a newspaper columnist.
-- It was at age eighty-one that Benjamin Franklin was a framer of the U.S. Constitution.
-- David was but a youth when he displayed more courage and trust in God than the older trained fighting men of Israel. (1 Samuel 17)
-- Moses was eighty years old when God used him to lead Israel out of Egyptian bondage. (Exodus 7:7)
-- Josiah was eight years old when he became king of Judah. By the eighteenth year of his reign Josiah had begun leading sweeping reforms in bringing the nation back to God. (2 Kings 22:1-3)

What do such references from the history of mankind tell us regarding age? Regardless of whether we are young or old there are worthwhile things that can be accomplished. Age does not necessarily play a part with regard to the quality of what one can contribute in life. And when we consider our life being open to God and His Will, regardless of our age, He can work through us.

So what should we bear in mind TODAY? Perhaps we should allow ourselves to be motivated by these words of Jesus.
“We must WORK the works of him who sent me WHILE IT IS DAY; night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9:4 ESV)

TODAY is the time for activity. TODAY is the day to work to the glory of God. TODAY is the day to allow Him to use us. TODAY, not our age, is the measure of time we ought to focus upon since it is the only time under our control. May we use it to God’s glory and the purpose of His Will.

Have a great day BEING A WILLING SERVANT OF GOD!

The Answer!

It has been moaned, “About the time I get all the answers, they change all the questions.” In life we can find ourselves challenged by either asking the wrong questions or accepting the wrong answers. What questions are we asking? What answers are we accepting?

With a perspective of life lived “under the sun” Solomon noted the view common to many in the world even today.
“Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life, and MONEY ANSWERS EVERYTHING.” (Ecclesiastes 10:19 ESV)

How often do people (or perhaps we ourselves) exclaim, “If I only had more money!” If we sat down for a heart to heart conversation with the very rich they would tell us that money is not the answer to everything. To possess much wealth brings along with it many challenges and even sorrows. (note 1 Timothy 6:9-10) The riches of this world hold no certainty (1 Timothy 6:17) that can be counted upon. This is why Jesus warned for us to be sure where it is we have laid up our treasures. (Matthew 6:19-20) What is the treasure we have set our eyes upon? What are we striving to grasp and retain most? And what are we doing with that which we consider ours?

Jesus exhorted…
“(10) One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. (11) If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, WHO WILL ENTRUST TO YOU THE TRUE RICHES? (12) And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, WHO WILL GIVE YOU THAT WHICH IS YOUR OWN?” (Luke 16:10-12 ESV)

Someone has described the challenge this way: “It is more difficult to manage riches well than to acquire them.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Here are two questions that are proper to ask. [1] How am I managing what I presently have? [2] Am I striving to lay up treasure here or in Heaven?

Some people think that with money they can “live the life!” However, Paul pointed out that there is life and then there is LIFE! (1 Timothy 6:19) Jesus indicated there is treasure and then there is TREASURE! One is secure while the other is not. One lasts, but the other will perish.

What is the answer to the question of life’s pursuit? The answer to it all is to be RICH TOWARD GOD! (Luke 12:21) In this way we will be amassing our wealth in Heaven where it is completely safe with Him. Unlike out bank accounts which are F.D.I.C. secured (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) our treasures in Heaven are H.D.E.G. insured (Heavenly Deposit Eternally Guaranteed). And we can unquestionably bank on that!

Have a great day KEEPING IN VIEW WHAT IS KEPT IN HEAVEN FOR US!

Let It Spring Forth!

Today is the first day of Spring. I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but I just returned from my ten mile walk and it has been a beautiful morning. The sun is shining on the snow capped Olympic Mountain Range, the budding trees are showing more and more color, the grass is greening up, some flowers have already bloomed and others are just about ready to burst open to display their brilliant colors. What a wonderful creation in which we live.

God has brought the sunshine and the rain to benefit His creation and cause it to be fruitful. Our senses of sight and smell can easily be captivated by it all. He wants us to enjoy it while giving Him the praise, for it is all the work of His hands.

However, that is not all God has rained down from above for the benefit of His creation. In Isaiah 45 God declared through His prophet how He has worked through others, being behind the subduing of nations, just as He has been involved in the works of creation. But God’s desire is also focused on the conquering of individual souls to bring about the fruit He created them to produce.

Through Isaiah we note…
“Shower, O heavens, from above, and LET THE CLOUDS RAIN DOWN RIGHTEOUSNESS; LET THE EARTH OPEN, THAT SALVATION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS MAY BEAR FRUIT; let the earth cause them both to sprout; I the Lord have created it.”
(Isaiah 45:8)

As the earth opens up to receive the rains of heaven, allowing them to soak in, are we open to the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD raining down upon us? Are we allowing it to soak in and saturate every aspect of our life? Are we accepting the shining of His Son upon us and in us to produce the FRUIT OF SALVATION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS that God desires to spring forth from our life?

It is the beginning of Spring! It is the reminder of new life, the greatest of which is that received in Christ. Let us soak in the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD that our life will produce much fruit in accordance with it.

Have a great day REVEALING A LIFE NOURISHED BY GOD!

Rejoice Young Man (Lady)!

Life! We’re in it together. We may be committed for the long haul. But as we get older the time often arrives when it becomes more difficult to keep up with it all. However, a HEART for life is a powerful thing regardless of age.

Solomon declared…
“Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and LET YOUR HEART CHEER YOU in the days of your youth. WALK IN THE WAYS OF YOUR HEART and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.” (Ecclesiastes 11:9 ESV)

To you young men and women reading this focus I encourage you to understand the important role you can play in life and in the church right now. Don’t underestimate your usefulness to God as your open up your HEART and life to Him.

Your youth has a lot working in its favor. It is easy for youth to get excited and passionate about things believed in. There is such vigor --
almost an endless energy -- for taking life by the horns. In your youth you hold no long history of “we’ve tried that before and it didn’t work” to hinder the trying anyway. It’s possible the timing now is right for such efforts. In youth lies a grand possession of great zest and enthusiasm for life and all the possibilities it holds.

However, did you also note the caution. “BUT KNOW that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.” With all your passion and youthful vigor, always remember you must keep God’s Will -- His Divine desires -- in mind. Don’t lose sight of that in the midst of the excitement for life.

Solomon also stated…
“The HEART OF MAN PLANS his way, but the LORD ESTABLISHES his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 ESV)

Let us each, regardless of age, put our HEART into life while allowing God to direct or establish our steps. With an energized HEART for life to the glory of God, there is much that He can work in and through us. May we let it be so.

Have a great day LIVING TO THE FULLEST FOR GOD!

All Things?

Someone has said, “If you see good in everything, you may be an optimist. On the other hand, you may be nuts.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Perhaps we have difficulty seeing the GOOD when it is there in some situations. Hopefully we are learning to trust more and more in the God who does have the ability to make “all things work together for GOOD” (Romans 8:28 ESV) -- that is for those who love Him. However it is important to note Paul did not say all things were GOOD. That is where some make the worst mistake; calling that which is not GOOD, GOOD.

God said it well through His prophet Isaiah centuries ago.
“WOE TO THOSE WHO CALL EVIL GOOD AND GOOD EVIL, WHO PUT DARKNESS FOR LIGHT AND LIGHT FOR DARKNESS, WHO PUT BITTER FOR SWEET AND SWEET FOR BITTER!” (Isaiah 5:20 ESV)

GOOD is GOOD when GOD is in it and for it. Regardless of the issues and opinions of today, we need to seek first and foremost what God has said and let it go at that. In spite of how we feel regarding any given issue, it is His standard we must acknowledge now because it is His standard which will matter in the end. Changing the labels will never change the facts nor His mind!

We may feel challenged as we continue to stand for the Will of God, but He has spoken and that should settle the matter in our own mind if we are seeking to please Him. May all the wisdom of His Way be evident in our life.

Have a great day FAITHFUL TO GOD’S WAY OF EXCELLENCE!

Good Health!

When you think of the word “constitution”, what does it bring to mind?
Do you think of that document which outlines the basic laws and principles our government is based upon? It is beneficial for our society to acknowledge and live by the same principles. Order and peace can be enjoyed when people strive to live by the same rules. Such lends toward a healthy society.

Another focus of the word “constitution” has to do with personal health.
When we refer to someone’s constitution, we are talking about their general health condition. We might say someone has a good constitution because of their ability to withstand disease or other difficulties of life.

Perhaps you have also heard someone mention having had their DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL. Though this expression may be dated, I still hear it expressed from time to time. A DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL is not a reference to reading the Constitution on a daily basis, though the word “constitutional”
is used in reference to what our Constitution authorizes. This expression is a reference to a regular activity -- usually a short walk -- for health reasons.

How about a spiritual DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL? Don’t we need that in order to maintain good health? If we are going to be healthy disciples of Jesus, what must we do?

Note the words of Jesus Himself:
“And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY and FOLLOW ME.’” (Luke 9:23 ESV)

All three of these -- the self-denial, the taking up of our cross, and following -- are to be daily. Daily we are to walk on with Jesus; following in His steps. Though the use of the expression “DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL” may be dated, may it never be outdated in our life, especially in a spiritual sense. Daily walking in the Will of our Lord helps keep us mindful of God’s governing principles, as well as helping to bring order to our life.

Let us each continue to be mindful of going daily to the Word of God and walking daily in accordance with it so as to be aided in developing and maintaining a spiritually healthy constitution. May this always be our DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL.

Have a great DAILY WALK WITH CHRIST!

Leaning!

Growing up we may have been reminded to sit up or stand up straight. Slouching, we were told, was not good for the back. Yet there are times we will find ourselves leaning; needing support whether it be physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. However, we must be careful what we choose to lean against. Leaning against that which is not strong enough to SUPPORT us can lead to falling and injury. People have leaned against deck railings, fences, and even walls which they unfortunately found were unable to SUPPORT them and suffered injury because of it. Others have rested their lives upon ideologies which turned out to have no substance to SUPPORT them and thus their hopes (financially, morally, socially, or spiritually) were dashed to pieces.

Solomon cautioned…
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and DO NOT LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING.” (Proverbs 3:5 ESV)

When we are weary or feel we are lacking in strength, what good is it to lean on ourselves? Leaning on our own wisdom for life will cause us to stumble and fall.

One of the psalmists declared…
“(5) For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.
(6) UPON YOU I HAVE LEANED from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother’s womb. MY PRAISE IS CONTINUALLY OF YOU.” (Psalm 71:5-6 ESV)

God was Who the psalmist acknowledged as giving the SUPPORT that brought him into life and was sustaining him through it. We must never lose sight of how much we need to lean upon God rather than depending upon ourselves. We can depend upon what He has declared!

Someone has encouraged, “You cannot break God’s promises by leaning on them.” [source: bulletin clipping] God’s promises have been established. We can trust in them. They have power to SUPPORT us as we continue on in life. We can lean against them with all our weight in life and not fear falling. He is faithful and able to provide the SUPPORT we need if we are willing to trust Him.

Paul referred to our Lord in these words:
“And he is before all things, and IN HIM ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER.” (Colossians 1:17 ESV)
We can lean upon the one who has the power to hold all things together. I’m reminded of the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” (Elisha A. Hoffman & Anthony J. Showalter, 1887) with the third verse which reads “What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms; I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms.”

The things of the world will someday give way. We must therefore lean upon that which is everlasting in order for us to endure unto eternal life. Let us continue to lean on Jesus, trusting His power to SUPPORT us in this life and on into eternity.

Have a great day TRUSTING THE TRUE SUSTAINING POWER OF JESUS!

Trapped Trappers!

Have you ever tried to set a mouse trap only to end up triggering it and snapping yourself? Setting a trap can be dangerous because it can easily end up BACKFIRING. And sometimes that is exactly what should happen.

As I was reading through Luke 20 this morning I was struck by the thought of how some trappers ended up being trapped. There were those who continued to make attempts at trapping Jesus with their questions only to end up finding themselves trapped by His. Such was the case when Jesus’ authority was questioned.

We read…
“(3) He answered them, ‘I also will ask you a question. Now tell me,
(4) Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?’ (5) And they discussed it with one another, saying, ‘IF WE SAY, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ (6) But IF WE SAY, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.’ (7) SO THEY ANSWERED THAT THEY DID NOT KNOW where it came from. (8) And Jesus said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.’” (Luke 20:3-8 ESV)

As these opened their mouths someone should have just handed them the shovel so they could have gone ahead and dug the hole for themselves. Jesus did not have a problem with sincere questions even if they revealed a focus that needed changing. (i.e. John 1:46) But the thing which should be learned regarding deceit and dishonesty is that it most often comes back to bite those who use it. Faced with Jesus’ question they knew they were in trouble either way they answered. The trappers became the trapped.

Regarding the wicked, David said a long time ago…
“(15) He makes a pit, digging it out, and FALLS INTO THE HOLE THAT HE HAS MADE. (16) His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends.” (Psalm 7:15-16 ESV)

And Solomon stated as well…
“WHOEVER DIGS A PIT WILL FALL INTO IT, and A STONE WILL COME BACK ON HIM WHO STARTS IT ROLLING.” (Proverbs 26:27 ESV)

It seems that these were warnings those who questioned Jesus should have remembered. However, we also need to be careful that we don’t end up digging holes for ourselves to fall into. Our motives are to be closely guarded. Why do we ask the questions we ask? Do we truly want an answer?

Solomon also stated…
“Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit, BUT THE BLAMELESS WILL HAVE A GOODLY INHERITANCE.” (Proverbs 28:10
ESV)

When we are honest we don’t have to worry about things BACKFIRING. When we are genuine we don’t have to worry that we might have dug a hole we ourselves could fall into. Some people end up inheriting the problems they tried to create for others. God has a better inheritance for those who follow in His Way.

Have a great day KEEPING THE SHOVEL FOR THE GARDEN!

What Kind of Animal

Perhaps you have seen pictures matching people’s faces with their pets or some other animal. The comparisons can be rather humorous. However, not all similarities may be a laughing matter. As David, drawing from his own life experience, addressed the blessing of forgiveness and the impact of un-confessed sin, he made mention of a couple animals. Are we like them?

Seeming to write from the perspective of God’s exhortation, David advised…
“(8) I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. (9) BE NOT LIKE A HORSE OR A MULE, without understanding, WHICH MUST BE CURBED WITH BIT AND BRIDLE, or it will not stay near you.” (Psalm 32:8-9 ESV)

Granted, many animals seem to exhibit an amazing measure of understanding. I say this especially in light of the fact we have a daughter-in-law who has had much experience working with and training horses. None-the-less, to be cooperative, the horse and mule have to be constrained to a certain degree or bridled to bring them into compliance. The bite of the bit turns the head of the horse (James 3:3) and the restraint of a rope either guides the mule or keeps it where it ought to remain. We, however, are exhorted to be open to the instruction, teaching, and counsel of God, RESPONDING to Him in an UNDERSTANDING WAY. Are we seen to bear the stubbornness and long-faced character of a mule? What other creature might best describe us?

If we are going to be compared to an animal, perhaps we should note the words of Jesus as He sent out the Apostles.
“Behold, I am sending you out as SHEEP in the midst of wolves, so be WISE AS SERPENTS and INNOCENT AS DOVES.” (Matthew 10:16 ESV)

Sheep, serpents, and doves. Good images for comparison. As sheep we need the guidance of the Good Shepherd. But as we follow His lead, we must also continue to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. God has revealed His will, offering His instruction, not desiring to either drag us about or tie us down, but rather to have us WILLINGLY RESPOND to Him in an UNDERSTANDING WAY. May that response be the mark of our life.

Have a great day EXHIBITING AN EAGER RESPONSIVENESS TO GOD!

Don't Play with Matches!

Someone has observed: “How is it that one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?” [source: bulletin clipping]

If you have ever gone camping or tried to light a charcoal grill you may find it easy to relate to that concept. Unfortunately it can also be true with our words. As each match contains the potential of GREAT POWER and far reaching affect, so do our words depending upon how and where they fall.

Remember James’ warning…
“(5) So also the tongue is a small member, yet it BOASTS OF GREAT THINGS. HOW GREAT A FOREST is set ablaze by such a small fire! (6) And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.” (James 3:5-6 ESV)

Words, carelessly tossed out can create as much devastation as a burning match flicked thoughtlessly onto the ground. However, words carefully struck and placed to touch where they are intended, even if they have to be spoken more than once, can produce the result for which they are intended. Matches are nothing to play around with. We need to carefully consider our words and how they match up with the situation and individuals involved so as to produce something beneficial.

May we continually be mindful of the way in which we direct our words, never underestimating the potential POWER in them to spark GREAT things.

Have a great day BEING WISE IN WHAT OUR WORDS SPARK!

Though He Knows!

Our tendency is to do things for others only when we feel they are deserving. If they are perceived as undeserving, we are quick to withhold from them. Certainly we would not want to empower others with the opportunity to do evil, but have we lost sight of the power of providing good for others with the hope they would ultimately be influenced by the GRACIOUSNESS of our actions?

God had Moses teach the nation of Israel a song before they were to enter the promised land. (Deuteronomy 31:19; 32:1-43) Why? The following passage tells us why.

“(20) For WHEN I HAVE BROUGHT THEM INTO THE LAND flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and grown fat, THEY WILL TURN TO OTHER GODS AND SERVE THEM, AND DESPISE ME AND BREAK MY COVENANT. (21) And when many evils and troubles have come upon them, this song shall confront them as a witness (for it will live unforgotten in the mouths of their offspring). For I KNOW WHAT THEY ARE INCLINED TO DO EVEN TODAY, before I have brought them into the land that I swore to give.” (Deuteronomy 31:20-21 ESV)

God knew what the people of Israel would do once they began to settle into the promised land. However, He was going to lead them into it anyway. If the God Who knows (as only He can) actions of man in such a way, who are we to be less GRACIOUS when we don’t know with certainty the future actions of others?

Oh, how unlike us is our God! We may wonder about His GRACIOUSNESS in spite of what He knows full well will happen. However, that is the way He is; very GRACIOUS to the undeserving, which includes you and me. Though we may accept the history of His GRACIOUSNESS and have experienced it ourselves, we must guard against taking it for granted. May we recognize how God’s loving actions are aimed toward the prompting of a loving and obedient response from us. That thought should powerfully impact our life in a way that continually draws us closer to Him and His Will.

Have a great day THANKFUL GOD DOES NOT EASILY GIVEN UP ON US!

Imitation

Generally speaking, that which is seen of value is imitated. Don’t we desire to model our life after that which has some glory to it? We imitate what we like. However, as we choose what or whom we will imitate in life, we must remember we will never rise any higher than the standard we are following.

It has been said that imitation is the SINCEREST PRAISE! Whatever or whomever is being imitated is being told they have a quality worth emulating. Can there be any higher PRAISE than that? We ought to therefore be concerned with what or whom receives that PRAISE from the way we live out our daily life.

Paul exhorted…
“(1) Therefore BE IMITATORS OF GOD, as beloved children. (2) And WALK IN LOVE, AS CHRIST LOVED us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV)

Paul, himself, tried to live a life worth imitating. He seemed to understand the great importance of always revealing the proper standard in his own life. (1 Corinthians 4:16; Philippians 3:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2 Thessalonians 3:7) However, the key to his proper example was in living in imitation of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1) Someone has well noted “The best school of nobility is the imitation of Christ.” (F.D. Huntington) [source: Dictionary Of Thoughts”, compiled by Tryon Edwards D.D., © 1903, p.377]

Living after the likeness of Jesus -- following daily in His steps -- is truly the SINCEREST PRAISE we can give Him. It is an acknowledgement of His worthiness. It is the surest sign of the acceptance of Him as the standard for living. It is the means of true noble character being established in our life. And it will place us in a position to be worthy of being imitated as well -- to His glory and PRAISE!

Have a great day LIVING IN GENUINE IMITATION OF CHRIST!

A Worthy Cause!

There have been martyrs for many causes throughout the history of man. Great nobility has been courageously displayed on life’s stage again and again. But have all the causes been noble? Have all the ideologies been worth the laying down of a life?

It has been stated, “To die for an idea; it is unquestionably noble. But how much nobler it would be if men died for ideas that were true!” -- H. L. Mencken, [source: “A Treasury of Business Quotations” by Michael C. Thomsett, ©1990, #831, p.76]

Even in the Scriptures we find mention of some who had a cause and died for it. (Acts 5:36-37) However, it is also noted that their followers soon fell by the wayside.

It is TRUTH which is worth taking a stand for, even to the point of death. But as Pilate himself asked, “What is TRUTH?” (John 18:38)

TRUTH: We have sinned. (Romans 3:23 ; I John 1:8)

TRUTH: We are in need of a Savior. Jesus is the only means of our eternal salvation and access to the Father. (John 14:6)

TRUTH. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10) That was His mission and our salvation from sin was the cause which motivated Him to endure the cross and ultimately reveal His triumphal power over death.

Jesus stated…
“(17) For this reason the Father loves me, because I LAY DOWN MY LIFE that I may take it up again. (18) No one takes it from me, but I LAY IT DOWN OF MY OWN ACCORD. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:17-18 ESV)

Some might question whether dying for sinners is a noble cause. However, that is exactly what God sent the Son to do and for that we should be eternally thankful. The TRUTH is that all was fulfilled in accordance with God’s plan to provide the adequate means for the cleansing of our sins.

Jesus stands out from all other martyrs in the fact He still lives. And though many have tried to halt His cause, it still stands. His followers are still following and the invitation is still extended for more to come. May we continue to acknowledge, live out, and share the TRUTH of Jesus to this lost and dying world.

Have a great day KNOWING THE POWER OF HIS CAUSE!

Attitude!

In Luke 15 we find three parable told by Jesus; the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. These three appear to have been told together to provide emphasis for a similar lesson. However, there are also points which can be drawn individually from them. Perhaps my favorite of the three is that of the lost son because of the number of sermons which can be drawn from this one parable. I have focused on the son who left. I have focused on the idea of what a “spiritual” famine can do to a life when one departs from the family. I have focused on what it takes for some to come to their senses, emphasizing that we may need to pray for such things to happen to gain the attention of others. I have focused on the three statements the lost son rehearsed to say to his father and how his father seemed to have stopped him, only giving him the opportunity to voice the first two. I have focused on the older brother. I have focused on what should be the naturalness of celebration. And perhaps one of my favorite focuses is that of the father in the parable who represents the loving Heavenly Father eager for His lost children to return.

Within the parable of the lost son, there are varying attitudes displayed. The son who departed had an attitude which went through transitions. The older son had an attitude which can be noted. And, then of course, there is the gracious and loving attitude of the father clearly displayed toward both sons. We may find it easy to pick out the varying attitudes contained in the parable, but where do we see ourselves?

Of all the fine lessons and important applications that can be drawn from these three parables, we need to make sure we do not overlook the attitude Jesus was initially addressing. When we look at these three parables in the full context in which they were told, we find Jesus was trying to get His audience on that occasion to consider their own attitude. Who was in that audience? Some Pharisees and scribes. And Jesus was aiming to redirect their focus.

In the first two verses of this chapter we find the attitude which gave rise to Jesus’ teaching on this occasion. It is noted in the grumbling of the Pharisees and scribes.
“(1) Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. (2) And THE PHARISEES AND THE SCRIBES GRUMBLED, saying, ‘THIS MAN RECEIVES SINNERS AND EATS WITH THEM.’” (Luke 15:1-2 ESV)

Then Jesus emphasized the value of one lost sheep among ninety-nine. He then emphasized the value of one lost coin (perhaps a part of this woman’s
dowry) out of ten. Then Jesus emphasized the value of one lost son out of two. But the attitude of the Pharisees which gave rise for these parables was their grumbling about Jesus’ reception of and time spent with sinners. In connection with the first two parables, Jesus mentioned “righteous persons” in contrast to the sinner in need of repentance. (Luke 15:7 & 10) However, in the parable of the lost son, Jesus let the older brother express the attitude himself. Were the Pharisees listening? Are we?

The older son whined to his father…
“(20)… ‘Look, these many years I have served you and I NEVER DISOBEYED YOUR COMMAND, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.’” (Luke 15:29 ESV)

“Never disobeyed!” An attitude of SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS. That was the attitude these Pharisees and scribes appear to have shared. Is that where we are? Do we also feel no need for repentance? If so, we will most likely find ourselves looking down upon others and perhaps even deciding some being unworthy of being drawn to Christ. Do we think we deserve what others do not? We do not have the right attitude if we feel we have merited the acceptance and blessings of God!

A SELF RIGHTEOUS attitude becomes a great hindrance in allowing God to work through us as He wishes and to see others with His eyes. Let us guard against such an attitude by focusing on the great rejoicing of God over every sinner who repents. And we can begin by acknowledging our own need for repentance. That is key to the development of the humble spirit we ought to possess before God and others.

Have a great day MOTIVATED BY GOD’S GRACIOUS SPIRIT!

Doing Its Thing!

A frequent subject in conversation, even amongst those who only engage in brief conversation in passing through the day, is that of the weather. Sometimes the weather is praised. Sometimes it is cursed. Here in Washington State we often say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change.” However, whether the weather is seen as good or bad, all the praising or complaining or fussing does not change it one bit. The weather just goes on being the weather.

Someone has stated, “All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.” [source: bulletin clipping]

Regardless of what we say, the weather does what God created it to do. It doesn’t matter what we want or what our plans might be -- the weather just is. In spite of the criticism of man it rains when it rains and the sun shines when it shines. And even on any given day, there will be those who might think the weather is ideal while others think it stinks. How could the weather ever please everyone at the same time? If CRITICISM could change the weather, what one desired might create havoc for the plans of another. The great kite flying or windsurfing weather for one might ruin the open air wedding planned by others. And the watered garden of one could end up being another’s rained on parade.

Yes, there is a lesson we can take from the weather. What are we to do when we face the CRITICISM of the world? We must realize it is an impossibility to please everyone. As the weather does what God intended it to do, refusing to be influenced by either the praise or CRITICISM of the world, so we must seek to do what God created us to do.

When the apostles were faced with the winds of CRITICISM of their day, how did they respond?
“But Peter and the apostles answered, “WE MUST OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN.” (Acts 5:29 ESV)

Peter and the other apostles did not allow the CRITICISM of the Jewish leaders to discourage or stop them. They had a resolve to continue to do what they had been called to do. Paul also made the pleasing of God his goal. (i.e. Galatians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:4) And we ought to do the same.

Let us determine that we will do what God has called us to do rather than paying attention to the CRITICISM of a world that only desires to have things their own way. May we always seek to uphold God’s Standard and Way.

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD TO REGULATE OUR CLIMATE OF ACTIVITY!

The Passion of God!

PASSION! The word is listed twice in the dictionary. The first listing gives as the first definition: “Intense or overpowering emotion.” The second listing states: “The sufferings of Christ, especially in the agony of the garden and on the cross.” [source: Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary © 1973]

Perhaps you have already seen Mel Gibson’s movie “The Passion Of The Christ” or have at least heard some of the hype preceding its release. I had read several articles, listened to interviews, watched a TV special on the making of the movie, and talked with people who had already viewed it to see what they thought. Yesterday my wife and I went and watched it ourselves. The cruel punishment and execution by crucifixion at the hand of the Romans were very graphically portrayed. The film contained much dialogue not found in Scripture while many other statements in Scripture I anticipated at various points in the film were not included. But it was a very moving film and hopefully will engage people in conversation regarding the truth of Jesus and lead to the reading of the accounts contained in the Scriptures.

“The Passion Of The Christ” was preceded by the PASSION OF GOD! The reality of Jesus going to the cross was all a part of the Father’s plan. It was the PASSION OF GOD for lost humanity that moved Him to send the Son. God was intent on meeting our greatest need -- complete cleansing from sin -- my sin -- your sin -- sin that put Jesus on the cross to shed his powerful life giving blood.

In our Lord’s encounter with Nicodemus, Jesus expressed the PASSION OF GOD in these words:
“For GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)

Peter noted the PASSION OF GOD when he wrote…
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, NOT WISHING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL SHOULD REACH REPENTANCE.” (2 Peter 3:9 ESV)

God takes no delight in condemning. His greatest desire is for Jesus to be accepted and submitted to as Lord and Savior. It is through Jesus Christ that God provided the adequate means for salvation from sin. He was PASSIONATE about providing for that greatest need; PASSIONATE enough to send the Son and the Son was willing to endure a horrible death on our behalf. And He rose on the third day, revealing His power over death and the assurance of the same power to provide for our resurrection as well.

The PASSION OF GOD provided the means of our salvation even while we were undeserving of it. (Romans 5:7) That PASSION ought to draw us into a loving and obedient relationship to Him. May the PASSION OF GOD produce a PASSION in us for seeking and living in accordance with His WILL.

Have a great day IMPACTED BY THE DEPTH OF GOD’S LOVE!

Slow Downs!

You may remember the old joke about the cowboy who was in the market for a new saddle. He was shown two saddles; one with a horn and one without. The cowboy’s response was, “I’ll take the one without the horn. There ain’t much traffic in these parts.”

I feel blessed to live in an area where there is not as much traffic as the big city. And I was reminded of how blessed I am last Wednesday as I traveled with another preacher over to Bellevue (east of Seattle) for a preacher’s fellowship. Because of heavy slow downs several places along the way, we ended up arriving late. But while we were still en route, after we had gone through several of the traffic backups, I remarked, “This is just like life. About the time you get moving along well and think you are in the clear, you come upon another obstacle that slows you down.” My traveling companion responded, “Sounds like a teEn-MAIL idea coming.”

We did not travel as quickly as we had planned, but we did get there. Though our speed was slowed considerably again and again, we were still MOVING CLOSER to our destination. We didn’t give up. We didn’t decide to turn around and go home. We kept PRESSING ON in spite of the slow downs.

Writing to the Galatian Christians Paul exhorted…
“YOU WERE RUNNING WELL. WHO HINDERED YOU from obeying the truth?” (Galatians 5:7 ESV)

Paul had shared the Gospel of Jesus with the people of Galatia. These had accepted the truth. They had begun moving along well in their growth in Christ. Then false teachers stepped in and were hindering their progress. Paul exhorted these brethren to remain faithful to the truth. They needed to keep PRESSING ON in accordance with the truth in Jesus rather than steered off course or stopped in their tracks.

Various things can work to slow our spiritual progress. We may have to slow down and deal with such things as varying doctrines and ideologies to sort through and compare with the Scriptures, persecutions to hang in there through, or trials of various sorts to overcome. But we must be sure to keep PRESSING ON.

Paul also encouraged these brethren…
“And let us NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for IN DUE SEASON we will reap, IF WE DO NOT GIVE UP.” (Galatians 6:9 ESV)

Life is not always smooth sailing. The pace will vary from time to time. The important thing is to keep moving toward that final destination prepared for the redeemed of God. The course has been laid out before us (Hebrews
12:1) and whether we move along fast or slow, let us PRESS ON to the finish, remembering our “…salvation is NEARER to us now than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:11 ESV)

Have a great day MOVING CLOSER TO OUR HEAVENLY GOAL!

God's Look and Touch!

Signs of life are seen all around us. God’s creation is full of ongoing activity. Some of it is always visible while other activity goes on beneath the surface of the earth, only to burst forth from time to time shaking or ERUPTING to remind us that it is going on.

In the Psalms we read…
“(31) May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works, (32) WHO LOOKS ON THE EARTH AND IT TREMBLES, WHO TOUCHES THE MOUNTAINS AND THEY SMOKE!” (Psalm 104:31-32 ESV)

At the look of God, the earth quakes or trembles. God touches the mountains and they smoke. All picturing the responsiveness of God’s creation to Him. However, how many people live in this world unwilling to acknowledge that they live their life in the full view of God. Though God observes their manner of living, the choices they make, and the sin they flaunt, they do not tremble as they ignore His standard for morality. There are also many who are touched by the blessings of God (i.e. Matthew 5:45) and yet, unlike the earth and mountains, they are unresponsive to Him. His blessings seem to prompt no response to either glorify or thank Him. But then, that’s nothing new among mankind (note Romans 1:20-21) who continues to be without excuse.

Do we live exhibiting an awareness of God’s look? Does our life reveal that we have been touched by God? With such acknowledgement are we working out our salvation with fear and trembling? (Philippians 2:12-13)

What was the response of the psalmist? He went on to state…
“(33) I WILL SING to the Lord as long as I live; I WILL SING PRAISE to my God while I have being.” (Psalm 104:33 ESV)

His response was to ERUPT IN PRAISE! His awareness of God and His power welled up in the singing of praises. Are we similarly impacted by the look and touch of God? Like the psalmist, may we also ERUPT IN PRAISE to God, allowing it to flow from our lips and life for as long as we live.

Have a great day GUSHING THE PRAISE GOD IS DUE!

Life Ethic!

“Ethic” is defined as: “(1) the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation, (2) a set of moral principles or values, …principles of conduct.” [source: “Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary”]

“Situation ethics” is defined as: “a system of ethics in which moral judgments are thought to depend on the context in which they are to be made, rather than on general moral principles.” [source: Microsoft ® Encarta ® Encyclopedia 2002]

Which of these two would most reflect the CHARACTER of our life? The first provides a very firm foundation on which to base life choices regardless of the situation. The second would give cause for wonder relating to any given situation or depend upon the company (or lack thereof) present at any given time and would therefore be marked by a great sense of inconsistency of actions and responses. Having life governed by “situation ethics” would not only leave those around such a one unsure of what to expect in any given situation, but it would also make the one governed by such a principle unsure themselves until each particular situation arose.

It has been said, “Character is doing what’s right when nobody’s looking.” [J. C. Watts, Jr., (Politician)]

We might marvel at the thought of a politician making such a statement or perhaps we would wish more would take it to heart. This statement strikes at the very heart of CHARACTER. It is the true essence of a life to be made evident regardless of company or situation. To live a life guided by righteous CHARACTER is to acknowledge the reality of absolutes with a desire to absolutely abide by them.

Within the culture of the first century Paul exhorted slaves…
“(5) Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, WITH A SINCERE HEART, AS YOU WOULD CHRIST, (6) NOT BY THE WAY OF EYE-SERVICE, as people-pleasers, BUT AS SERVANTS OF CHRIST, doing the WILL OF GOD FROM THE HEART, (7) rendering service with a good will AS TO THE LORD AND NOT TO MAN,
(8) knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he WILL RECEIVE BACK FROM THE LORD, WHETHER he is a SLAVE OR FREE.” (Ephesians 6:5-8 ESV) [also note Colossians 3:22-24]

Paul went on to address masters doing what was right as well. However, the principle here was applicable to one whether they were “slave or free.”

Is our life governed by “situation ethics” or by established rules of right and wrong which would fit any situation? Are we focused on the eyes surrounding us, or the all seeing eye above us? What pleases people varies from person to person and moment to moment to such an extent it would be hopeless to find any constancy there for the situations of life. On the other hand, seeking to please God and live in accordance with what He has revealed provides the solid framework for decisions to be made long before we are faced with those situations. With such a focus we will be inclined to do the right thing whether others will ever know about it or not! That is the CHARACTER that brings true stability to life. And our reward will be from the One Who is always aware of our actions and the heart behind them.

May we continually seek to please God! That is always the right thing to do! Allowing His Will to be the thread weaving though all our actions and choices will serve to bind our life together to His glory and praise!

Have a great day LIVING CONSISTENT WITH GODLY MORAL FIBER!

Keeping It In Perspective!

The statement has been made that some people are so heavenly minded they are of no earthly good. Certainly heaven is the destination we ought to have in mind. We must live aware that this world is not our home -- heaven is. That is where our citizenship is (Philippians 3:20) and we should have a natural longing to be there. However, it is possible to become some fixed on eternity that we forget we do have a PURPOSE HERE to fulfill. We must be careful to keep it all in proper perspective.

We noted yesterday how Paul had a longing to depart and be with the Lord. However, as much as he looked forward to going home, he kept a proper perspective for this life as well. Paul’s goal was for Christ to be honored in his body whether it be in his life or his death. (Philippians 1:20)

After expressing his longing to depart and be with Christ, Paul stated….
“(24) But TO REMAIN IN THE FLESH IS MORE NECESSARY ON YOUR ACCOUNT.
(25) Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, FOR YOUR PROGRESS AND JOY IN THE FAITH, (26) so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.” (Philippians 1:24-26 ESV)

We noted the “I’d rather be…” statements in yesterday’s focus and as we read them on vehicles going down the road I’m sure our hope is that the drivers of those vehicles will, at least for now, continue to be focused on the driving they are supposed to be doing.

As much as Paul longed to go on to his heavenly inheritance, he recognized there were things here on earth he needed to focus on doing; there were still lives to be impacted through his ministry for Christ. Even though his longing for Heaven was deep, he never seemed to lose sight of his PURPOSE ON EARTH. Paul was convinced of the assurance of hope for eternity, but he knew what was more necessary while he lived and was willing to expend himself on behalf of others. He was willingly living out his PURPOSE on earth (Acts 9:15-16) given to him by the Lord.

Certainly we need to focus on “things above” (Colossians 3:2) so that we can discern properly between that which is of utmost importance from that which does not last. A heavenly focus is to aid us in keeping the activities of this realm and life’s Divine PURPOSES in perspective. Such a focus helps to remind us of the urgency of what we have been called to do on earth that relates to eternity, not only for ourselves, but also for those around us. May we each keep Heaven’s PURPOSES in mind for our earthly lives.

Have a great day BEING HEAVENLY MINDED FOR GOOD ON EARTH!

I Would Rather Be...!

“I’d rather be fishing!” “I’d rather be sailing!” “I’d rather be golfing!” “I’d rather be hiking!” Etc. We all have probably seen such words on license plate frames or bumper stickers; displayed by people driving down the road or going about daily routines who would rather be SOMEWHERE ELSE doing something else. How many are not satisfied with where they are and thus have a deep longing to perhaps be anywhere else but where they are?

Paul had a longing.
“(21) For to me to live is Christ, and TO DIE IS GAIN. (22) If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) I AM HARD PRESSED BETWEEN THE TWO. MY DESIRE IS TO DEPART AND BE WITH CHRIST, FOR THAT IS FAR BETTER.” (Philippians 1:21-23
ESV)

That was a powerful longing. There was no place Paul would rather be than in eternity with His Lord. If he had placed a bumper sticker on his donkey it might have read, “I’d rather be in Heaven!”

This past Sunday evening we sang “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be”, by Bridgewater and Bland (© 1920). Though I have sung this hymn many times before, there was a phrase in the first line of the second stanza which really caught my attention as we sang -- so much so that I even underlined it in the book.
“In heaven ,no drooping, nor pining,
No wishing for elsewhere to be,”

Yes! “No wishing for elsewhere to be!” Satisfied! Home at last! No better place than right there! A time and place when there would be no longing for SOMEWHERE ELSE! What a wonderful thought regarding our heavenly home!

I don’t know what all Heaven will be like, but if there will be any place for a bumper sticker, mine will read “I’m Right Where I Want To Be!” I will be home and there will be no other place like it!

Have a great day ASSURED OF A GLORIOUS ETERNITY!

Payment!

Some people have it all! They just haven’t PAID for it yet. “Buy now, pay later.” That is much the way it is in this life. We can buy furniture and appliances to begin enjoying right now and either pay for it monthly or sometimes not even begin the payments for a year or more. Though businesses have made it easy to buy stuff, how much of it is just about worn out before it is ever paid off?

Perhaps some of the things we feel best about are those things which we can enjoy, knowing they are already PAID for in full. Some people drive cars that may not be real fancy, but they’ll tell you with a big smile, “It’s PAID for.” They can drive it and appreciate it knowing they don’t have to continue making payments because that has already been taken care of. Oh, what a wonderful feeling that can be.

For some their motto in life seems to be “Play now. Pay Later.” And those who continue to reject Christ will ultimately pay dearly. (Romans
6:23) However, we can praise God it does not have to be that way, even though a debt of sin is acquired in this life.

In the prophecy through Isaiah regarding the coming Messiah, we read…
“(4) Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. (5) But HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS; HE WAS CRUSHED FOR OUR INIQUITIES; UPON HIM WAS THE CHASTISEMENT THAT BROUGHT US PEACE, and with his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:4-5 ESV)

Jesus PAID our debt of sin when He gave Himself on the cross. That debt is one which could never be PAID for ourselves. But His payment is adequate as we continue in a right relationship with Him. In Christ, our debt of sin is stamped “PAID IN FULL”. Because of that we can rejoice and feel good knowing, as Paul stated: “There is therefore now NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS.” (Romans 8:1 ESV) Shouldn’t that make us smile?

Have a great day APPRECIATING WHAT IS ALREADY PAID FOR!
