A Day For Love!

February fourteenth. Valentine’s Day. A day for LOVE? Just one day? Just one day out of three hundred sixty-five? One day for flowers, chocolates, candy hearts, teddy bears, cards, and sweet sayings? One day for those we LOVE to be told they are LOVED?

For those who truly LOVE and are LOVED, they don’t need a day. The flowers, cards, small tokens of LOVE and affection, and endearing words come more frequently than just once a year. True LOVE is endearing. True LOVE is enduring. True LOVE can’t keep quiet. True LOVE speaks. True LOVE acts. True LOVE is full of life.

That’s what the LOVE of God is all about. That’s the kind of LOVE He wants us to experience. And that’s the kind of LOVE He wants us to extend to others. It is not LOVE that waits to be deserved or merited. It is LOVE that decides to LOVE in spite of. It is LOVE that decides to LOVE because LOVE is what is needed.

That’s the kind of LOVE Paul described when he wrote…
“(4) Love is PATIENT and KIND; love DOES NOT ENVY OR BOAST; it is NOT ARROGANT (5) OR RUDE. It DOES NOT INSIST ON ITS OWN WAY; it is NOT IRRITABLE OR RESENTFUL; (6) it DOES NOT REJOICE IN WRONGDOING, but REJOICES WITH THE TRUTH. (7) Love BEARS ALL THINGS, BELIEVES ALL THINGS, HOPES ALL THINGS, ENDURES ALL THINGS. (8) Love NEVER ENDS.” ( 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
ESV)

What a list! What a description! A LOVE that is not self-centered, but other centered. It is the way God has displayed it. And it is because He LOVED that we also are to LOVE. ( 1 John 4:19) LOVE is God’s very essence! ( 1 John 4:8) And it is just as eternal as He is.

John encouraged…
“SO WE HAVE COME TO KNOW AND TO BELIEVE THE LOVE THAT GOD HAS FOR US. GOD IS LOVE, AND WHOEVER ABIDES IN LOVE ABIDES IN GOD, AND GOD ABIDES IN HIM.” ( 1 John 4:16 ESV)

LOVE! It’s not just for a day, but rather for life and eternity. May we continue to abide in it!
